HE MONTH OF MAY BRINGS WITH IT TWO VERY IMPORTANT HOLIDAYS. First, we celebrate Mother’s Day, a chance to recognize all the special women in our lives. Next, we observe Memorial Day, an opportunity to honor all the men and women who have given their lives while serving in the U.S. military. We want to wish all our readers a safe and happy holiday! May is also a reminder that summer is just around the corner, and there are plans to be made! Whether it’s choosing a summer camp for the kids or planning a staycation for the family, we’ve got you covered. If you missed last month’s extensive Summer Camp Guide, we have a continuation in this month’s edition (page 34-43). And if a break from the normal, everyday routine sounds good to you, don’t miss this month’s special staycation feature, and see how to treat yourself on your own turf without the hassle of a long flight (page 22 & 61). We are thrilled to feature Pilates in the Grove on the May cover. Be sure to read the great article “Work Out Smarter Not Harder,” to learn how Pilates in the Grove brings their unique brand of healing to their brand new South Miami location (page 24). We also call your attention to “The Philanthropist” in this month’s magazine, who happens to be a Miami native and Palmetto Senior High alum (page 16). Risa Berrin, founder and executive director of Health Information Project (HIP), talks about HIP’s inception, importance, and plans for expanding nationwide. And finally, we want to take a moment to thank everyone who voted for the Best of the Best Readers Choice Awards. Don’t forget to connect with us via social media too. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). Alexander knows it is going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day when he wakes up with gum in his hair, and he is right; things only get worse as the day goes on. The only reasonable response is to move to Australia. Judith Viorst adapted her own award-winning children’s book into this marvelous musical that is wacky, wild, and wonderfully wise. actorsplayhouse.org

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, part of Miami Children’s Health System, is partnering with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) in a pilot program providing telehealth consults to support assessment of children who exhibit health issues while at school. The pilot program, offered at four M-DCPS schools, will connect school-based nurses and their patients with advanced care providers at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital via a secure audiovisual connection. Using audio and visual tools, the hospital-based providers are able to assess certain conditions of the skin, ears, eyes, throat and lungs to help determine if the child is well enough to remain in school. When appropriate, a prescription can be submitted to the pharmacy of choice, supporting families in obtaining treatment at the earliest opportunity. Participating schools include W.R. Thomas Middle School, Southwest Miami Senior High School, Richmond Heights Middle School and Airbase K-8 Center for International Education.

Whole Foods Market Miami metro stores held a 5% Day on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 and donated five percent of the day’s net sales to fund the Miami Science Barge – a floating urban ecological laboratory and public environmental education center powered by renewable energy. All six Miami Whole Foods Market locations (Aventura, Coral Gables, Downtown Miami, North Miami, Pinecrest and South Beach) participated in this 5% Day and together were able to raise $37,969.88 for the Miami Science Barge. Throughout the day, Miami Science Barge crew were in stores, sharing information about the exciting project designed to catalyze local efforts to build a sustainable Miami. Whole Foods Market customers also participated in activities where they learned recycling facts, like how long common single use products last in the environment before decomposing, as well as learning which common products are recyclable in Miami-Dade County. “Tabling at 5% Day was a great experience for the entire staff and allowed us the opportunity to engage with community members throughout the county,” said Miami Science Barge Director, Nathalie Manzano-Smith. “We are delighted to continue our partnership with Whole Foods Market Miami and look forward to working together towards a greener Miami.”

T HE PHIL ANT HR O PIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
A HIP Education BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
NAME:
Risa Berrin Founder and Executive Director, Health Information Project (HIP) BACKGROUND: Miami native (and Palmetto Senior High alum) Risa Berrin can call claim to many titles: law student, journalist, health educator and guardian ad litem. But when her various roles post-graduation exposed a lack of innovation in school health education she took on one more: founder. “I realized that teens were dealing with serious issues and they were not equipped with proper information or resources to make responsible, educated decisions about their health,” says Berrin. “I originally thought that I would find an organization nationally and see if they were interested in expanding to Miami. Unfortunately, there was no such program in existence… So many of the programs I looked at were dependent upon adults from a community doing work in the schools. I wanted the teens to take responsibility and address these issues themselves.” ABOUT HIP: Founded in 2009, HIP trains high school students to create school environments where talking about health is safe, acceptable — and mainstream. Today, the organization has a presence in all of the public high schools in Miami-Dade County as well as Gulliver Preparatory School. “In this school year alone, HIP is educating 30,000 ninth graders and providing health resources for 120,000 students in 45 high schools in Miami-Dade County, which is the fourth largest school district in the nation,” says Berrin, who works alongside sister Valerie, the organization’s director of operations. “I am completely blown away by this incredible movement that has been created by the young people in this community. When given the opportunity, kids can step up and do amazing things.” THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION: HIP calls their approach simple-empowering student health ambassadors to tackle the health crises of their generation, bringing a new face to the school health model and reaching teens who may not be as receptive to teachers or parents. With peer educators trained in public speaking, classroom management, curriculum knowledge and leadership skills, topics covered can include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, stress, sexual assault and obesity. “These conversations are literally saving lives every day at our schools,” says Berrin, who can recount one particular story of a young girl stuck in a difficult family situation who self-medicated with prescription and recreational drugs and cutting. After joining the HIP chapter that came to her school the young woman became a peer health educator. “She realized that she was not alone, that there was help at her school and in the medical community and that teachers and fellow students could support her,” says Berrin. “She also realized that she could help other students, something she could have desperately used as a ninth grader. This young lady became the HIP president at her school, is currently in college and is studying to be a policewoman.”

FUTURE PLANS: Berrin and her team recently celebrated at a March HIP Day event with all 1,200 11th and 12th grade HIP peer health educators from across the entire school district at UM’s BankUnited Center and hopes to build on their success--and cost-effective model (“It utilizes an inherent labor force in a school--the kids!”)-- by expanding nationwide. Says Berrin, “HIP should be a part of every high school..”

Palmer Students On Shark Adventure BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
R
ECENTLY TWENTY PALMER TRINITY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND MEMBERS of the School’s science department joined the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on a shark tagging trip, as part of the University’s Shark Research & Conservation Program. The one-day research expedition departed from Crandon Marina on Key Biscayne and was filmed for season three of “Xploration Awesome Planet,” a nationally-syndicated educational TV series hosted by Philippe Cousteau Jr., grandson of the legendary Jacques Cousteau. “Our fourth shark tagging trip with the University of Miami was an exceptionally interesting opportunity for our students to experience the scientific method in practice and in the field,” said Dr. Caroline M. Hammerschlag-Peyer, Palmer Trinity School science department. As volunteers, the students participated in taking length measurements, tagging, assisting with blood centrifugation, taking tissue samples and making scientific observations involving sharks.

Miami Students Embrace Earth Day
M
FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE EXPECTING
IAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A variety of Earth Day activities on Friday, April 22, 2016. Here are a couple of highlights…
TERRA Environmental Research Institute To focus on the plight of our earth and all living creatures, TERRA students paid homage to the diamondback TERRApin (Terrapin), a native Floridian and East Coast turtle long threatened by endangerment and extinction. Throughout the year, students have been researching recycling and the damage that plastics and other garbage have done to the environment for decades. On Earth Day, TERRA students created works of art depicting the TERRA-pin from discarded plastic. Their goal is to emphasize the need to protect the species from the ravages done to many water and land creatures by irresponsible humans tossing plastics and refuse into our waterways. The message is clear: Without these valuable freshwater turtles, the ecosystems of our waterways will become seriously out of balance, affecting not only the turtles but humans as well.
Pinecrest Elementary School Honoring Earth Day, Pinecrest Elementary School students raised more than $2,000 for the Dream in Green challenge by asking students to wear green on March 17th and to contribute a minimum donation of one dollar. The top two fund-raising classes witnessed the live “sliming” of the school’s principal, Lynn Zaldua, and teacher Sharon Altfield on Earth Day. Classes were also each assigned an area or garden within the school to clean up and the school planted a tree and added a “peace pole” to a new garden, creating a “peace garden.” Pinecrest recycling team was out on Earth day, wearing their vests, collecting the recycling bins and placing them in their proper locations.
Greynolds Park Elementary School After dismissal, students and parents gathered by Greynolds Park Elementary Students fundraised $1,700 for Dream in School’s PLC shed to rotate through sta- Green and were able to slime Ms. Altfield (aka Ms. Greenfield) and Lynn Zaldua. tions demonstrating different ways we can help protect our earth by keeping it clean, recycling, growing plants in recycled containers, and planting trees and flowers.
Palm Lakes Elementary Palm Lakes Elementary School hosted one of the 2016 Earth Day Tree planting activities. At 9:00 a.m., artist Xavier Cortada addressed a group of students and participated in the tree planting activity outdoors.
Miami Beach Senior High School Miami Beach Senior High’s ecology club observed its second annual Earth Week, with theme days and activities that culminated in an Eco Fair on Earth Day. The club invited over 20 vendors, special guests and organizations to attend the event, including music, vegan and vegetarian food, guest speakers, giveaways and activities.

Work Out Smarter Not Harder PILATES IN THE GROVE BRINGS THEIR UNIQUE BRAND OF HEALING TO SOUTH MIAMI BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
OR MANY, THE IDEA OF A PILATES STUDIO CONJURES UP IMAGES OF LONG, lithe women stretching themselves into seemingly impossible positions as they maneuver within a series of weights and pulleys. They would be wrong. In reality, says Pilates in the Grove owner Christa Gurka, students are more likely to find an atmosphere of support and healing, with many regulars working to alleviate everything from back pain to sports injuries in addition to getting fit. “Our studio is very different,” says Gurka, who opened her newest studio in South Miami early this year. “We’re all about bringing [Pilates] to the general population. It’s a very comfortable, very positive environment.” The South Miami studio is no exception with 1,500 square-feet of space that Gurka says reflects the attitude of her staff and students. “We searched for more than a year to find the right spot,” she says, admitting she was drawn to the final space thanks to its cozy atmosphere, ample parking and bright, window-filled rooms. “It was important to have the space speak to what we are trying to grow.” Gurka herself brings more than 15 years of experience in the wellness and physical therapy world to her own practice. When an injury sidelined the longtime athlete in college she found a new passion during her own recovery, leading to a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami. When Gurka found post-collegiate work in a Pilates-based outpatient facility, her fate was sealed. “We were using Pilates-based methods with all of our patients and then sending them off to local studios when their therapy was done,” says Gurka. “I thought ‘Why are we sending them somewhere else?’” Since then, Gurka has opened three studios that embody her welcoming, inclusive philosophy on fitness and healing, a Miami Beach studio in 2006 (which she eventually sold to focus on her thriving Grove business), the Grove location in 2010 and now South Miami. Through it all, Gurka has populated her studios with other professionals who share her attitudes. “Pilates in the Grove is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of the greater Miami community,” says South Miami studio manager Lauren Travis. “Our instructors and staff lead with passion, lean on our diverse experience and keep abreast of the latest techniques to provide a safe, welcoming environment for all who workout with us.” In addition to working with back issues (“Sitting has created a lot of problems,” she says) and other physical issues, Gurka and her team offer students a variety of options when it comes to beginning or continuing their Pilates work. »» Group Classes Limited to no more than eight students per class, Pilates in the Grove’s group reformer classes are kept small to ensure personalized attention, giving students the benefits of a personal training session at the class price point. Additionally, Gurka point out that many of the classes are taught by experienced physical therapists, making the group classes a good –and safe—choice for those worried about past injuries or limitations. “We get people who want to stay fit in a safe, efficient way; a way they can keep up consistently for twenty or thirty years. We teach our clients how to work out smarter, not harder.” »» Private Sessions For those looking to hone their Pilates skills, private sessions allow Gurka and her team to give individual attention and customize the time for maximum results. »» Corporate Wellness Gurka and her team work closely with various organizations to create and conduct a wide variety of on-site wellness programs, working together with business owners on everything from a single session to a series and allowing employees to develop a better understanding of how their lifestyle habits affect their energy and overall performance. »» Physical Therapy In addition to fitness students, Pilates in the Grove is a full service physical therapy center and wellness facility, bringing more than 30 years of combined experience in staff of highly trained Physical and Occupational Therapists. Gurka’s team has specialized training in Manual Therapy, Myofascial Release, Soft Tissue mobilization, Joint mobilization, Kinesiotaping, Neuromuscular Re-Education, Movement Integration and Muscle Energy Techniques. Pilates in the Grove has two convenient locations: Coconut Grove: 3316 Virginia Street, Miami, FL 33133 & South Miami: 5900 SW 73 Street, Suite 104, South Miami, FL 33143. A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. LEXANDRA AND I HAD THE HONOR TO PARTICIPATE IN the 2016 Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay/Cutler Bay Relay for life on Saturday, April 2nd. This year was particularly exciting for me as this marked the first year of participation for Palmetto Bay’s first youth board, officially known as the “Youth Community Involvement Board” (YCIB). First of all: Congratulations to the Palmetto Bay YCIB’s “Team Toby Keith” at our Relay for Life. You all worked hard and were very successful in raising money. Your booth was outstanding. Each of you worked hard and took on significant responsibility to make this event a success. I am so proud of all of you: Agnes Bartha, Tatum Rivera, Patrick Barber, Jacob Dewitt, Jacob Tisthammer, Katie Signori, Charles Noguera, Alexander Santana, Mark Merwitzer, Jackson Ribler, and Valentina Maldonado. The most touching moment came at 8 pm with the Luminaria ceremony. It is a humbling experience to read all of the names and messages surrounding the track. Alexandra and I dedicated luminaria in honor of both our fathers, Rebecca Ribler, & Ofc Randy DiStefano. Seeing all of those individuals candles is always very moving for me. As the American Cancer Society says, every candle has a name. Thinking about all of the those families that have been affected by cancer in some way is just incredibly humbling. It’s such a powerful reminder of why everyone is out there doing, working so hard to make a difference.

N MIAMI, WE LIVE IN A CITY WHERE WE HAVE MANY CHOICES. There are numerous restaurants to choose from, gyms to workout in and there is a dance studio on every corner. How do you choose one that is right for your child? The first thing you need to discern is what kind of studio you want your child to attend. Do you want a dance studio or a ballet school? Both have great qualities and I am going to go through them for you! Let’s start with dance studios. A dance studio centers around two very important aspects: competitions and recitals. Often there are competition teams at that studio that you have to audition for. These competitions can be local, as well as national, so there is travel involved. If you are in a studio that has competitions, many extra hours above and beyond the actual class times are devoted to rehearsals. The rehearsals usually happen after class time and on weekends. These extra rehearsals, costumes, competition fees and audition fees are not part of your monthly tuition. The recital aspect of the studio revolves around a big end of the year show. Class time is sometimes compromised to allow rehearsal for this show. A dance studio also offers many types of dance. Most commonly found at these studios are ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical and hip hop. Additionally, students dance to pop, rock and hip hop music. It is sometimes a requirement at these studios, especially if you are on the team, that you take all of these classes. Dance classes for little ones usually are comprised of two-to-three different types of dance in one hour. So a three year old could be taking jazz, tap and ballet in one hour. Let’s move on to a ballet school, or what is sometimes called a professional school. These studios are exclusive and less local. Here, everything is centered around classical ballet. Any additional classes offered complement the ballet dancer, such as modern, character and Pilates. Students are also exposed to classical music which is scientifically proven to develop complex brain patterns that give children an advantage in math and critical thinking. How cool is that? Besides learning proper ballet technique, which involves learning a little French (all ballet words are in French), ballet also teaches timeliness, discipline, poise, posture and grace. In my classes we even discuss physics, geometry and anatomy and how they relate to ballet. Each class is devoted to working on technique, core control and mental focus. A child’s physical age and body type are always considered and taken into account in regards to their daily classes, summer programs and career choices. Little ones at ballet studios are offered creative movement classes which teach the fundamentals of ballet along with the principles of coordination, musicality, and imagination. Ballet schools often put on a December performance, usually called “The Nutcracker.” Rehearsals are outside of class time and costumes are loaned out. Your monthly tuition is inclusive of all extra rehearsal time. There is also an end of the year performance called a Ballet Demonstration, which involves displaying the skills each class has learned throughout the year. Costs are kept down by means of each student wearing their required class uniform. If a student is participating in the ballet company productions, extra practice time teaches the skill of performing while offering the chance to perform in real ballets. Your choice of school might depend on convenience in regards to what studio is closest to you. I highly recommend arranging a meeting with the owner of the studio before enrolling your child. Walk into the studio, look around and see how you feel. Be wary of signing contracts that obligate you to commit to a full year of dance and penalize you financially if you can’t continue. Do a little research on the internet as well. Do the studios hire students to teach for them, or are there skilled professionals teaching your child? Check the bios of the teachers and make sure you like the teacher you are handing your child off to. They will be teaching and influencing your child for multiple hours. Opening its doors in 2008, Soul Purpose Studio has become the place to train in advanced ballet thanks in part to Alison’s very well-respected name in the community. The studio offers ballet class from ages 3-18 as well as Pilates and Yoga. Alison primarily teaches the Pre-Professional program which is ages 10-18 as well as all of the Pilates classes and absolutely loves what she does every single day! School’s Out for the SUMMER: A Perfect Time for Music BY PENNY DANIELS
S
CHOOL IS OUT. TIME FOR FUN, SWIMMING ON THE BEACH WITH FRIENDS, vacations with your family. No homework. No waking up early to go to school. The opportunities are many: sports, music, art, academics, volunteer work, and part-time jobs. In the summer, you hear all types of music … at parades, at concerts, at the fireworks, or relaxing at home. Would you like to learn music or become a more experienced musician? Summer is less scheduled and therefore, there’s more time to learn a musical instrument, take music lessons and practice, practice, practice. You are never too old to start learning a musical instrument. And by starting your children playing instruments as young as four, you are helping them learn a technique and skill that will last a lifetime. As parents, we want our children to be well rounded and oftentimes schedule them for many activities after school … softball, baseball, soccer, swim lessons, t-ball, hockey, dance, volleyball, golf. Why not music lessons this summer? Taking the summer off from practicing your musical instrument is practically guaranteed to set you back. It is difficult to maintain your level of confidence when you don’t continue your regular practice routine. Instead of taking time off during the summer, take advantage of the extra time by focusing on developing improved practice habits that can take you to your next musical plateau. Summer can be a great time to build new musical skills and knowledge by doing the following:

The Art Scene in Charleston Deserves More Than a Peek BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
T
IRED OF THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD OF MIAMI’S ART GALLERIES? ART BASEL too big and impersonal for you? Well, treat your senses to a place that is not too far from home and absolutely amazing. The art gallery scene in Charleston, SC awaits you. So, a girl walks into a bar (it sounds like I’m going to tell you a joke but this is really how it happened.) I was sitting at the bar at The Vendue and in walked a local artist that made every woman in the place swoon. Meet Stephen Elliott Webb. Once I found out what he did, I quickly engaged him to be my gallery tour guide so I could get an insider’s peek to all the fabulous galleries. More on Stephen later as I like to save the best for last. Stephen Elliott Webb in his studio. A few weeks later, with a very comprehensive itinerary in hand, we met to begin our walkabout; with more than 50 galleries in Charleston, I’m sure he was hard pressed to pick a handful for me to visit. So, let’s get started. The first gallery was Helena Fox Fine Art. She is a fourth generation art collector and her gallery carries 20 artists in the American representational style. Along with the works of nationally- and internationally-renowned artists, the 22K gold jewelry of Sarah Amos also calls the gallery home. Next on the list was Ann Long’s gallery where I browsed 25 artists of modern art and classical realist works. The next stop will prove very interesting for Miamians as Rebekah Jacobs has a high-end vintage photography gallery with quite a bit of Cuban inventory, which you can browse on the Internet. Definitely worth your time. The next three are my favorites. The John C. Doyle gallery houses Mr. Doyle’s works of realism and impressionism. It just so happens, Mr. Doyle and Guy Harvey (for all you Florida fans) were friends and there is one original sport fishing painting left and it is for sale at the gallery. If you can afford the price tag of $75,000, it would be one to have in your collection. Blue Cuban Seas is one of my favorites as it features Hemingway’s boat with a Marlin jumping over it. If you favor the surreal realm, than Robert Lange Studios has to be a must see. Run by a husband/wife team, all the artists have a tie to Charleston and you can actually go upstairs and see Robert work. Once I was up there, I really didn’t want to leave as I became totally transfixed at watching him. Jealousy is one word that came to mind due to the fact he made creating look so effortless. “There is no right or wrong way to be an artist,” he told me. Clearly the man has not had the privilege of seeing my “paintings.” One last stop before heading to Stephen’s studio and that was at the Principle Gallery. Walking through the front doors, I was struck with the elegance of the space and felt myself slow down in order to take in all the beautiful paintings. Frank Russen, who is the director of the gallery, recently came from Naples. Clearly it is Naples loss, as Frank has brought his extensive knowledge base, fabulous ideas and personality to the gallery to make it one not to be missed on an art walk. As I mentioned earlier, I have saved the best for last. Stephen walked me over to Mitchell Hill Gallery to show me his work and then over to his studio so I could get a first hand look at how he turns an ordinary canvas into a spectacular piece of art. I was completely amazed how he could take watercolor, latex, acrylic and oil paint along with glue, gesso, enamel, salt and soap and create something any South Beach condo would be proud to hang on its walls. “The lawlessness of abstract art is truly therapeutic. All chains are cut and the artist’s mind can run free.” And so Stephen’s words rang true for me, for as I looked at piece after piece, I swear I could feel the ocean breeze floating through open balcony doors. Hospice Care is a Specialized Care
F
OR MANY YEARS, DEATH HAS BEEN A DISTANT, FRIGHTENING AND SOMEtimes mystical event. The notion of dying at home was foreign as hospice care was first introduced as late as the 1970s. Ill patients have often felt that staying at the hospital or at an inpatient facility is the only way to treat the disease. However, this pattern is changing. Ann Neuman of The New York Times wrote, “Hospice programs now care for 60 percent of all dying patients each year, at a total of 1.5 million.” Hospice care is a specialized care that provides support to the patient and their family during a serious illness. Hospice care focuses on quality of life rather than a cure to the illness. Now, as Hospice programs are more prevalent, patients and their families are sharing the death experience in the comfort of the same home where they have shared their cherished living experiences. One of the main goals of hospice is to care for patients so that they live comfortably and with dignity until they pass away. Another goal is to help the patient’s family feel comfortable and be with them in their final moments. There is still, however, a stigma against hospice care as there is misinformation and continued lack of trust toward hospice programs. Many do not know that hospice requires patients to have a prognosis of six months or less to live. Patients and their families often do not take advantage of the full six months because they are fearful; most patients enter hospice in the last four weeks of life. Hospice programs, like Hospice Care of South Florida, are available to support the patient and their loved ones with the care they need. Just as each person’s life is unique, so is his or her passing. It is important to acknowledge the patient’s wishes and have him or her feel comfortable when they need it the most. Although it may be difficult for the patient and their family to discuss pre-death arrangements, it is another way of acknowledging the patient’s approaching passing while also providing the family comfort that the decisions that will be made are the patient’s wishes. Hospice care programs often include platforms such as “Five Wishes,” which gives the patient a chance to explain how they want to be treated if they become seriously ill. It is the first living will that specifies the patient’s position about their personal, emotional, spiritual AND medical wishes. It allows the patient choose the person they wish to make healthcare decisions if they are unable to make it themselves. It also helps explain to the patient’s family, friends and doctor exactly how they wish to be treated if they are very ill. Most importantly, it provides comfort for the patient and their family during a very difficult time. The family will not have to make hard choices if the patient is unable to communicate, providing ease during this time. An advanced illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice programs, like Hospice Care of South Florida, have interdisciplinary teams of physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, and pastoral guides and volunteers that are available to take care of the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the patient. Social Services personnel are available to assist, when requested, with the process of completing advanced directives. Making funeral plans before a patient’s death can also be helpful to the family in carrying out the patient’s wishes. Asian Fusion Cafe BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

ERVING UP THE VERY BEST OF ASIAN CUISINE, Asian Fusion has lived up to its name since 2003, bringing the flavors of Thailand, Japan, Vietnam and Korea to the Palmetto Bay Community. Run by partners Steven Wilkinson (the business) and Lek Ratanavong (the food), the Asian Fusion Café idea was born after Ratanavong wowed friends with her delicious creations. “Lek would have house parties and all of her friends loved her food,” says Wilkinson. “They could taste the difference from other Asian restaurants and they would encourage her to open her own business.” One glance at Asian Fusion’s reviews (sprinkled with words like “delicious,” “top notch,” and “amazing,”) and that difference is clear. “Lek is the food connoisseur, with more than 25 years of restaurant experience, along
with our Chef Pisanu Pasuk who brings more than 25 years of cooking experience,” says Wilkinson, who is quick to point out that all dishes are homemade. “Having worked for some of the best Asian restaurants in South Florida, they bring the best Pan Asian Dishes to Asian Fusion Cafe.” The restaurant is also keen on developing relationships with the surrounding community. Having both lived in South Florida for more than 40 years, Wilkinson and Ratanavong take pride in knowing customers on a personal level and expanded their business to include corporate catering and event planning (as well as a whole-

R E AL ESTAT E TALK
An Open Letter To Buyers and Sellers BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
Dear sellers:
Staging your home pays. With the onset of the spring market, buyers have more choices than ever to select their home. In working with buyers, we find that they are very much influenced by the curb appeal, the condition of the home, the cleanliness and space. Recently, a buyer expressed that the seller’s’ lack of attention to keeping the home clean translates in his mind to a home that has not been maintained properly and probably has major issues underneath the mess. He never really “saw” the house for all that it offers and instead left frustrated asking to see another home. If you’re in the market, take the time to show off your home in its best light. Or, be prepared for a low ball offer. Gain objectivity and compare the curb appeal of your home with others that are on the market. Go through your house as if you were a buyer (easier written than done). Remember why you bought your home and make sure that part of the home shines through. Uncluttering…when it doubt, throw it out, sell it, store it or give it away; a cluttered house feels smaller than it actually is. The opposite is also true. Which works better for you? It really does come down to time and money. Put in the time, you’ll sell better and faster. Don’t and your home will sell for less. When an offer comes through, it’s usually the best offer the market will yield. It’s usually one that you can negotiate to get it closer to the point where it makes sense to sell. So many times sellers react emotionally to later realize they should have engaged with that first offer. Why must a seller lose out on an offer or two before recognizing fair market value?
Dear buyers:
There is no perfect home that will meet all of your criteria. That is part of the beauty of owning your own home. You can make it perfect for you, once you own it. Homes are like people in that they are wonderful and have flaws. Come into a home with an open mind and think of how you can make this house work for you and your family. Focus on what will work instead of all the flaws. Chances are that the flaws can be overcome and the overall features and benefits of the home outweigh them. After all, so many families before you made this their home, right? Buyers usually take time in understanding the market and have to see many homes to get there. Inevitably, that house they saw the first day that was a fit, is now sold. Every house from here forward will be compared to that one, but that is gone… so, it’s time to manage expectations and adjust. You can make a house perfect. You can never change the location. What gives? Why must a buyer lose one or two homes before realizing fair market value? The market has flattened and there is currently sufficient inventory for five-to-six months based on the current demand in the neighborhoods that The Florida Villager is distributed to. Pricing is very important as well as the condition of the home. That never changes. Frank DeValdivielso, a member the Miami FL Team and The Keyes Company, is based out of 2423 Le Jeune Road, Coral Gables, FL 33134. FASHI O NISTA
The Fashion in BeTWEEN BY TENNILLE GUTIERREZ
I
S YOUR TWEEN OR TEEN DAUGHTER SUDDENLY DISGUSTED BY ALL THE CLOTHES in her closet? Does she hate everything you buy for her yet constantly complains she has nothing to wear? What happened to the sweet little girl that loved princess glitter tees and hot pink Crocs filled with Jibbitz? Well, you are not alone. Tweens and teens today face remarkable peer pressure to dress a certain way to “fit in.” With technology and social media over saturating our lives, children are inundated with images and ideals that, most times, are not age appropriate. Even as adults, we too are exposed and it is easy for us to become desensitized. However, as parents, maybe it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate how societal influences are harming our kids. Here are a few ways to help teach your tween make appropriate fashion choices while still allowing her to maintain her individuality.
Teach Her About Self Image As girls become tweens and teens, there is a significant amount of pressure to look and dress sexy. Kathryn Stamoulis, Ph D, a mental health counselor specializing in adolescents, believes this puts girls at risk for self-objectification, the process in which girls think of their bodies as objects of others’ desires. For this reason, Stamoulis believes it is important to teach girls that sexy is not a look but, rather, a feeling; being confident in one’s own skin. Take the time to reassure your daughter by telling her all the ways she is beautiful on the inside and focus less on the outside. This way, she will grow up with a secure sense of self, knowing that true beauty shines from within.
Teach Her to Dress For Comfort Age appropriate clothing should provide both coverage and comfort for your tween. According to Stamoulis, clothing should not restrict mobility in anyway. Allowing your daughter to wear uncomfortable clothing tells her that it is more important to look good for other people than to feel good. As mothers, we can also model appropriate fashion for our daughters as they tend to look to us and other female role models for fashion sense and style.
Set Fashion Limits Tweens and teens are usually preoccupied with wanting to fit in and may not realize what they wear could give others the wrong impression and attract unwanted attention. And although it’s important for your child to have some say in what she wears, as parents, we have to explain the reasons why certain style of clothes should be avoided.Having these discussions will open the lines of communication and help your tween understand you aren’t arbitrarily deciding that she can’t have something she wants.
Set a Budget As tweens try to fit in, it might be hard for her to understand $100 is too much to spend on a pair of jeans. And as hard as it may be for you to say no, it is important to set a shopping budget. Before you head out on your shopping date, sit down with your daughter, make a list of the things she needs, and set a limit. If your daughter insists she must have a certain pair of shoes outside of the budget, have her earn an allowance by helping with household chores. It’s never too early to teach a child the importance of responsibility and the value of earning their own money. Shop these great tween looks from Threads Boutique! Introducing Naked Cakes: A Sweet Centerpiece for Your Summer Soiree BY NORMAN LOVE
T
HE TRADITIONAL DECORAtive cake is known for its trademark layers of white icing or thick fondant coupled with accents of sugary flowers and garnish. In recent months, our industry has seen a shift while the consumer market is buzzing over a new confection, naked cakes. The industry term “naked” is used when referring to unfrosted cakes with the sides exposed. Our team was inspired by the rustic elegance of these bare confections and has since welcomed our signature rendition of the modern cake, Naked Love. Naked Love is all about the decorative artisan touches that leave the layers of cake and fillings bare, allowing the naked beauty of the cakes to leave nothing to the imagination. The naked cakes’ recent rise to fame is due in part to its versatility. For summer entertaining, a naked cake can withstand outdoor events in the warmer months, when you typically have icing dripping down the sides. The old saying “less is more” is certainly the case where a naked cake lets light layers and subtle elegance do the talking. The natural sophistication of this dessert offers party hosts the option of a modern cake that still fits
the classic mold. For a summer dinner party or family barbeque, lay brown craft paper across the table for a casual look and let the beauty of your confection make a statement. Norman Love Confections’ Naked Love cakes, which embrace classic American flavor combinations, are rich and flavorful, packaged carefully for shipping, and ready-to-serve or refrigerate upon arrival. Adorned with polka dots on top, our naked cakes feature fresh, quality ingredients and seven indulgent flavors including Banana, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Coconut, Vanilla Confetti, Lemon Raspberry and Ultimate Chocolate. Norman Love is a world-renowned pastry chef and awardwinning chocolatier who has been recognized several times for producing the best ultra-premium chocolates in the nation. Norman Love Confections’ “Black Collection” has been included in Forbes on its list of the nation’s top 10 truffles. Norman has
been named one of USA Today’s top 10 entrepreneurs for 2014 and the Huffington Post included his chocolate salon as one of the top six US destinations in its Chocolate Lover’s Travel Guide. In addition, Norman Love Confections’ chocolates and desserts are offered on 18 Princess Cruises’ ships through the “Chocolate Journeys” partnership. OR MANY YEARS, ANIMALS WITH MISSING LIMBS AND OTHER SKELETAL problems were expected to adapt on their own to their abnormal way of moving around (functional adaptation) and do well. Three-legged dogs suffer from chronic neck and back pain, as well as arthritis. Humane euthanasia was considered to be the only option when eventually, the dog was unable to hop around anymore due to pain. Rigid casts, used to immobilize a limb as part of a medical treatment, inevitably create wounds and sores. Dogs that were not eligible for surgery for the correction of a joint problem, for example, were left to suffer from the chronic pain of an unstable joint. Today, we know that a correct mode of walking and moving will improve the physical and mental health of the pet, maximizing the overall quality of life. Thanks to a better understanding of animal physical fitness gained over the past 15 years, and with the creation of the Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation specialty, our goal now is to improve the mobility and functionality of animals with disabilities, through the use of mechanical appliances such as orthosis and prosthesis. Orthoses or “braces” are devices that complement an orthopedic surgery, and sometimes represent an alternative to the surgery itself. These devices attach to the affected body part of the animal to support, immobilize, align, or correct a deformity. The orthotics have hinges to promote normal range of motion and prevent muscle atrophy. An example is a custom brace to support a knee instability caused by a cranial cruciate injury. A veterinary prosthesis, on the other hand, replaces a missing limb or a section of the limb to facilitate a pet’s mobility. The current consensus in veterinary medicine is to avoid amputation of the entire limb if part of it can be saved and adapted with a prosthesis. It is the job of a certified veterinary rehabilitation therapist (a licensed veterinarian certified in rehabilitation) to provide orthotic/prosthetic specific rehabilitation therapy, so that the pet can acclimate to the device, and learn to use it. As veterinary medicine evolves, so do the expectations for our pets’ quality of life. It is not acceptable to allow pets to live an unnecessarily disabled life or to suffer early euthanasia for conditions that can now be managed with medical devices and rehabilitation therapy. Always educate yourself on the latest medical technologies and explore all of your options, before making a medical decision that could profoundly impact your pet’s life.

Mirror, Mirror-What Reflection Do You Want to See Post Divorce? BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
Y
OU LOST YOURSELF IN YOUR marriage and now you’re faced with losing yourself after divorce. While you were married, you turned yourself into what your spouse wanted, what your children needed and how society says a married person is supposed to be. Now the ink has dried on your divorce decree and you are still trying to be someone other than yourself. You’re listening to your friends and family telling you how you should behave as a single parent, you are letting your children dictate your life by guilt and you want to please the person you’re dating even though it might not be in your best interests. Stop this post divorce madness. What reflection do you want to see when you look in the mirror? Do you see a person who: »» Has a passion and is being true to him/herself? »» Loves themself, which means the good, the bad, and the ugly? »» Has embraced where they are in the present moment? »» Chooses to think positively instead of negatively?
»» Has looked inward and reassessed the future from a different perspective? »» Has taken responsibility for his/her actions? »» Takes the high road? »» Has set boundaries with people in their lives? »» Is living a healthy life, physically, emotionally and spiritually? »» Is taking the time to heal? »» Is choosing to move forward? OR, do you see a person who is bitter, resentful, neglects the children, and looks for happiness through drinking, spending, drugs or sex? A person who enjoys the martyr role or continues to ruminate over the wrongs his/her committed? Refuses to let go of old dreams, let’s others, including the children, run their life? Is constantly trying to “get back” at the ex even to the detriment of their children? Which person do you see? Take a long look in the mirror and be happy with who you see looking back at you. You are not the first to be wronged or to have gone through a terrible break up, so as Dolly Parton said, “Get down off the cross, we need the wood.” Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach special-
izing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). She professionally coaches clients on how to avoid the breakup backlash and live better, not bitter. As a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator trained in collaborative divorce, Debbie gives clients the tools they need to successfully untie the knot and stand strong in the wake of adversity. She brings her formal training and life experience into her coaching practice to empower and educate clients through their divorce journey and onto new beginnings. You can contact Debbie at debbie@ thepowerofdivorcecoach.com.

Why Fresh is Best for Your Dog BY TAMI MAIER
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
D
IET IS THE FOUNDATION FOR VIBRANT HEALTH FOR PEOPLE AND DOGS. Along with providing a happy lifestyle that includes exercise, clean water and love, a diet of fresh whole foods is the best thing you can do for your pet. There is currently an epidemic of poor food choices in our society. We’re overdependent on quick and easy, processed, pre-made foods in our own and our dog’s diets. We are feeding our dogs commercialized foods with many ingredients (such as sugars, colors and salt) that are solely for marketing reasons rather than for providing nourishment. We have been led away from our kitchen, and it is becoming clear that this way of nourishing our dogs and ourselves simply doesn’t work in the long term. Here are ten reasons why fresh is best: 1. Cleanliness : Even the most high quality commercially produced dog food is still mass-produced. For example the manufacturer is not cutting out the little mushy spots on the carrots or trimming the unnecessary fat from the meat. 2. Freshness: When dog food is homemade it just tastes better and has more nutrients, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids than commercially prepared versions, simply due to fresh ingredients. 3. Your Dog Will Feel Good: poor quality dog food is full of all sorts of cheap fillers, chemicals, preservatives, artificial colors and other nasty ingredients. Even high end commercial brands use flavor enhancers and extra fats that make the food more palatable to your dog... but also less healthy. All these ingredients can cause your dog to feel tired and worn out. Feeding your dog the best dog food will help them feel good and will promote a healthy activity level. Old lethargic dogs that lumber around and sleep most the day will get a spring in their step. Some feel like puppies again. It’s a joy to see! 4. Better Digestion: Are you cleaning up huge piles of dog poop everyday? Does it seem like as much comes out as poop, as goes in as food. If so, this is because of all the fillers in dog food. Huge volumes of stool and rank odor are signs of a poor quality dog food. Feeding the best dog food will improve your dog’s digestion. High quality homemade dog foods will contain highly digestible ingredients and therefore reduce the volume of dog stool. 5. Control: Last but not least, you have total control over the ingredient list and the ability to eliminate all the additives and preservatives. You can pick the protein and the right fruits and veggies for your dog’s particular needs. This becomes especially important if you have a dog with an allergy to certain types of protein. Before switching your dog to a new food always check with your veterinarian on suggestions to make sure you are feeding a balanced diet. Come visit us at the Pinecrest Farmers Market every Sunday from 9-2 for samples of our fresh homemade dog food and treats!

Insulin is directly responsible for the conversion and storage of excess calories to fat. King insulin sends all his insulin troops out into the body to bring Princess sugar back into his control. Unfortunately, the body cannot keep up with King insulin and his siege, leaving princess Sugar to grow wild and restless, and possibly elope with the evil Duke of Type II Diabetes. This wicked couple, if not kept in check, can guarantee a very dark future for this kingdom. What a scandal. We live in a society driven towards enjoying the moment without worrying about the future. The effects of sugar can take months or years to become an obvious problem. Since nothing serious happens to our bodies immediately after eating a piece of fruit or drinking a regular soda, we assume nothing bad is happening, and continue on without changing our habits. But now we know the truth about Princess Sugar and King insulin. It’s never too late to make a change; your future self will thank you. MERICA IS CONSTANTLY OBSESSING OVER THE NEW fad diet to get in shape fast. As a plastic surgeon, I see this daily with people wanting to quickly improve the way they look. A diet trend nowadays is cutting out carbohydrates and fats and increasing fruits, but what if these diets are missing evils hidden behind sweet and seemingly-innocent exteriors? I’m talking about sugar, and I’m not just talking about the high-fructose corn syrup we adamantly stay away from. So what is sugar? There are multiple kinds of sugar. Glucose, or blood sugar, is the simple sugar that provides most living organisms with energy, found in carbohydrates. Glucose does not have a sweet taste. Fructose, on the other hand, is what gives all different types of sugar their sweet flavor. Fructose is naturally found in fruits, and is also added to sodas and fruit-flavored drinks. Sucrose is commonly known as table sugar, or refined sugar, and is made up of 50 percent glucose and 50 percent fructose. You would think high-fructose corn syrup, a chemical alternative with a bad reputation, would be wildly different from these natural sugars, right? Actually, high-fructose corn syrup is a combination of 45 percent glucose and 55 percent fructose—not so different from the 50/50 split found in naturally produced sucrose. So why is it so much worse for you than these natural sugars found in fruit? The answer is, it isn’t. All kinds of sugar can be bad for you; let me explain why. Let’s look at the way the body handles glucose vs. fructose. Glucose is rapidly absorbed in the digestive tract and used for immediate energy. Excess glucose is eventually stored as fat. Fructose, on the other hand, is sent directly to the liver to be stored as fat. In liquid form, fructose actually hits the liver fastest, which is why
