A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Happy Father’s Day!
S
UMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE AND WITH IT COMES THE end of school, the beginning of vacation time and the beauty of less traffic. Longer days and less activities make summer a perfect time to explore some of the fantastic activities and opportunities that make South Florida great… many of which are the direct result of our own community members hard work and dedication. This month we spoke with two of those innovators: Grove native Stephanie Ansin, whose Miami Theater Company just received an NEA grant for an upcoming show (page 12) and Palmetto alum David Brownstein, who recently returned from Los Angeles to bring his years of experience in family entertainment to South Florida families and businesses (page 16). Also in the issue we celebrate our 2nd annual Father’s Day special feature (page 34). This year we’re proud to share a diverse group of fathers, sons, daughters (and even in-laws) who share more than just a name. Their take on family dynamics in the workplace and thoughts on what and how they’ve learned from each other is inspiring, funny, educational and, in the end, heartwarming. And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), Instagram (@thefloridavillager), and Google + (The Florida Villager). You can also find an online version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,

PINECREST GARDENS RECEIVES ENDOWMENT FROM NEA The National Endowment for the Arts has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects and partnerships in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2016. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $10,000 to Pinecrest Gardens to support educational outreach. This first-time grant funding from the NEA will allow Pinecrest Gardens to bring A-list jazz talent to its 2016 - 2017 season, while keeping its ticket prices below $30 in its intimate, 500-seat venue. “The funding will allow us to continue our Gen-Next Jam mentorship program that exposes gifted young jazz students to the same world-class artists we bring in for our mainstage series,” said
Pinecrest Gardens Director Alana Perez. “A key component to this initiative is the inclusion of at least one artist annually who has been named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master.” The money will support the South Motors Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens concert series and South Motors Gen-Next Jam - a jazz educational outreach initiative. “The arts are all around us, enhancing our lives in ways both subtle and obvious, expected and unexpected,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “Supporting projects like the one from Pinecrest Gardens offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day.”

Vizcaya Celebrates A Study of Robert Winthrop Chanler With New Book BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
T
HOUGH THE MAJORITY OF HIS WORKS REMAIN tucked away in private collections, American artist Robert Winthrop Chanler is well known for straddling the divide between fine and decorative art and defined notions of originality and authorship during the birth of American modernism. Two of his only public works (the pool grotto ceiling and “Vizcayan Bay” screen) happen to reside within South Florida at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. An interest in those works prompted a 2014 symposium on Chanler, which paved the way for “Robert Winthrop Chanler: Discovering the Fantastic,” out this month from Monacelli Press. We spoke with Vizcaya Curator (and symposium organizer) Gina Wouters and Vizcaya Conservator Lauren Hall about Chanler’s legacy, the creation of the book and the efforts to preserve what remains of his work.
TELL ME A BIT ABOUT THE IDEA BEHIND THE BOOK. Wouters: We always intended on having some form of a proceedings publication [from the symposium], but ultimately decided to partner with a press that would produce a full-scale book with a broad distribution reach. Monacelli Press was a great partner because they have a high standard for producing books of great quality that are visually striking and present content. It is hard to find a press that is committed to scholarship and doesn’t just want to produce an attractive picture book.
WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF PUTTING THE BOOK TOGETHER? Wouters: The content of each essay was already developed for the October 2014 symposium but the majority of the authors had their research underway for over five years. Authors refined their materials and submitted finalized text at the end of 2014. In early 2015 Vizcaya worked on editing the essays and since we all had the same protagonist, Robert Winthrop Chanler, there was significant review to ensure consistency and omit overlap.
WHY HAS THERE BEEN SUCH AN INTEREST IN HIS WORK? Wouters: It’s important to mention the preservation urgencies that plague Chanler’s immersive spaces and also drove the momentum to an extent. Finding a solution for how to preserve Chanler’s work is a time-sensitive question as paint flakes off on a consistent basis. The confluence of scholarship and conservation treatments has led to a dialogue between professionals challenged with the same objective.
HOW IS VIZCAYA HANDLING THAT ISSUE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE OUTDOOR MURAL? Hall: Given that the mural is situated outside, over a swimming pool, in a subtropical environment, about 150 feet from Biscayne Bay, we are presented with a myriad of

conservation challenges. Vizcaya is approaching the preservation of Chanler’s mural in three phases including (1) Investigation and Documentation, (2) Materials Analysis, and finally (3) Treatment and Presentation. We’re currently completing phase 1 and beginning phase 2. Our overall project objectives are to stabilize the mural, better protect it from the ravages of the environment, establish a more cohesive aesthetic, increase accessibility to the space, and communicate about Chanler and his artistic intent. We are collaborating with a number of conservation professionals to conduct the comprehensive research required for such a complex project.
THE BOOK INCLUDES NEW PHOTOGRAPHS OF CHANLER’S WORK, MOST OF WHICH
RESIDES IN PRIVATE COLLECTIONS. WHAT WAS MOST INTRIGUING ABOUT VISITING THE WORKS DURING THE BOOK PROCESS? Wouters: It was a fascinating process to view extant works that I and most other scholars had only been familiar with from a publication from the 1920s. Just being able to be in the physical presence of Chanler’s work is rare as the majority of his pieces are in private hands. A few days ago the Whitney Studio in Greenwich Village announced that they would begin offering tours of the phenomenal Chanler interior at the site. These are the only opportunities the public has to see Chanler’s work. Naturally, being surrounded by it for days was an extraordinary moment and honor, likely not to be duplicated. Hall: Accompanying Gina to New York to assist with photography for the book was an extraordinary opportunity to experience a diverse volume of his work. Observing these works of art in person enabled me to begin to recognize the artist’s hand, invaluable to understanding the creative process of an artist as distinctive as Chanler.

David Brownstein of Sounds Sweet Entertainment BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
C Experience Nail Care in a Whole New Way!
REATING QUALITY EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN IS NO EASY feat, but for Sounds Sweet Entertainment owner David Brownstein it’s turned into an award-winning career. The Pinecrest native turned Los Angeles resident turned Miami resident again channeled a love of performing into a career that has seen him go from in-demand kids DJ (he’s done more than 800 parties as “Groovy David”) to full-service entertainment company. Today, Brownstein not only works with families but also hospitality companies (think hotels and cruise lines) and event spaces to create what he calls “incredible family experiences.” We caught up with Brownstein to talk summer fun, kid’s demands and why sometimes the simplest idea is the best.
SUMMER IS PRIME PARTY AND WEDDING SEASON, WHAT’S THE ONE THING PEOPLE SHOULD REMEMBER WHEN INCLUDING KIDS IN AN EVENT?
3400 SPA PEDICURE & MANICURE Must mention this ad
$
The first thing I would say is that you should always think about the type of party that you would like, rather than what others think you should have. You know your friends and family best. Then I would think about breaking down what you want for the day. An activity that you think will take an hour may only take 20 minutes, so think about how to schedule activities that will keep everyone occupied. We offer everything from interactive dance troupes to jugglers to stilt walkers as exciting entertainment options. Ask yourself “What am I trying to get to?” “What do I want the event to be about?”
WHAT ARE SOME NEWER TRENDS IN FAMILY EVENTS? A lot of people are trying to be more environmentally conscious, they want to use materials that are green and create less waste. Less plastic tchotchkes. So it’s about trying to find inventive ways to do that. People want a cherished memory, but they go home with buckets of stuff. For example, we just started our “Throw a Party, Donate a Party” initiative… if you throw a party with us we will donate our services to a charity or nonprofit. People have really responded well to that!
WHAT ABOUT THE CLASSICS? Oldies are goodies for a reason… you don’t have to overthink it. Take bubbles. You can’t go wrong there. My job is to work with event planners, corporate clients and families and take something classic and make it out of this world.
SHOULD YOU INCLUDE KIDS WHEN PLANNING AN EVENT? I always like to get the feedback of the kids and hear their feelings about the party if possible. That’s where I can be helpful, to let an outsider say “your friends are going to be there too… let’s think about what they want to do.” I turn down karaoke suggestions all the time because you may have three girls who love to sing and the rest are just sitting and watching.

SWITCHING GEARS- WHEN YOU WORK WITH LARGER COMPANIES OR HOTELS HOW DO YOU ADDRESS SAFETY AND PARENT CONCERNS? Safety is underneath everything we create, that’s the bottom line. From developing the hotel activities, training the staff, to the running of the event itself. Right now we’re looking at partnering with an app that will update parents during the day of how an activity or event is going. Maybe it’s a picture or a text about what their child is doing. We’re always striving to find inventive ways to keep parents updated so they can enjoy what they’re doing without worrying about the kids.

T HE PHIL ANT HR O PIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
Faith in Family BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
NAME:
Elyssa Lewis Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options (JAFCO), jafco.org BACKGROUND: A South Florida native, Elyssa Lewis is no stranger to giving of her time to the local community. The Gables resident and mom of two not only acts as current PTA President at Pinecrest Elementary School but also as Sisterhood President at Temple Judea. Add to that her work with JAFCO and many might wonder how she manages to fit it all in. “It sounds cliche but it really doesn’t seem like that much when you’re in the middle of it,” she says. “I love helping and I love being around people so it’s sort of a no-brainer.” In fact, it was her work with Judea that brought her back to JAFCO after first hearing about the organization when she was a JCC camp counselor in college. “Some afternoons we would take the kids to Jewish Family Services and it always stuck in my head that there was an organization trying to help these kids,” she says. “When we did a Chanukah drive for them at Judea a few years ago I connected the dots that they were still here and still doing great things.” ABOUT JAFCO: Established in 1992, JAFCO is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services to abused and neglected children in South Florida. They provide programs and services for at-risk children and children with developmental disabilities and their families at both their Children’s Village and Ability Center sites including: emergency shelter, group homes, foster care and adoption, family preservation, in-home therapy, special needs programs and more. “I am incredibly proud that even though Jafco takes in children from all religions, they work to keep Jewish children connected to their heritage and allow them to live as a family,” says Lewis. The Miami chapter, to which Lewis belongs, is one of more than a dozen in Miami-Dade and Broward counties as well as in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. “Because the Miami chapter was so small when I joined it was easy to become involved and to really feel like you were doing something,” she says. A DIFFERENT KIND OF FAMILY: Far from just providing a basic range of services, Lewis says it’s the not-so-little things that JAFCO provides that make her most proud of the organization. Children residing in their group home (located at JAFCO Children’s Village, a gated private residential community with six single family homes, a basketball court, a swimming pool, and a playground) are kept at their home school whenever possible and given access to tutors, therapists, music lessons, cultural outings and more under the supervision of a house parent. “They can go to college and have the opportunity to have a bar or bat mitzvah,” says Lewis. “They can stay in JAFCO’s care and in group homes until they are 24, which is really amazing.”

FUTURE PLANS: Chapters will kick into high gear come September when fundraising events begin again along with planning for their annual March luncheon. “We’re always looking for people to host something at their home,” she says. “A camp shower, a baby shower... It’s an easy way to help without making a big financial and time commitment.” Lewis is also happy to spread the news about a newer fundraising initiative, the Birthday Club. Created by Lewis, along with friends Heather Sosler, Laura Kaplan and Julie Paresky, the Birthday Club allows donations to be routed directly to children within JAFCO’s Village to help them celebrate their birthdays. Donations (accessible via the JAFCO website) range from $36 for a birthday cake, to $108 for a dinner out with friends, to $504 for an entire birthday celebration. “We wanted our own kids to get involved in some way and to create something that would be relevant to them,” says Lewis of the birthday idea. “It’s one thing to give a holiday present, but it’s another to help someone have a great birthday... that’s a big deal.”

PALMER TRINITY’S BIG HISTORY For the second consecutive year at Palmer Trinity School (PTS), 9th grade students taking World History had an interesting and exciting Skype conversation with the creator of the Big History Project (BHP), historian Dr. David Christian. Big History encompasses the history of the human existence on a broad scale, starting with the Big Bang up to the present, and even the future. It is an interdisciplinary approach that enables students to ask big questions, forms multiple connections among disciplines and produces a transformative experience in understanding the scientific origin story. “This course generates great enthusiasm in our students and for that reason I contacted Dr. Christian who graciously accepted to Skype with us. The conversation revolved around the future of humanity in our planetary system, the applications of modern technologies, and the possibilities of terraforming Mars,” expressed Laura Massa, History and Humanities Department Chair.

Riviera Preparatory Uses Art for Community Outreach
R
IVIERA PREPARATORY IS BRINGING TOGETHER art and service to better their own community via a series of initiatives that has seen the students, under the direction of teacher Janis Klein-Young, work with Camillus House, ArtSouth and the Village of Palmetto Bay. “Combining the concept of art and service has always been a major focus since the inception of Riviera Preparatory,” said Klein-Young. An inspiration and role model for her students, Klein-Young (in addition to her role at Riviera) operated ArtSouth, a non-profit arts organization that provides art enrichment programs for children living in Chapman Partnership for the Homeless and communities whose children lack the economic resources to benefit from exposure to the arts. That connection led to a special fundraising opportunity for Riviera art students when they set up face painting stations at the annual Palmetto Bay Picnic (they also face paint for Chamber South and the South Miami Art Show). “We have over 20 students participate/volunteer at each event,” says Klein-Young. “Many
yearly opportunities are open to all 100+ art students, who generally find a way to use their artistic talents to benefit the communities in need.” In the end, face painting efforts at the Palmetto Bay picnic resulted in $500 in earnings, all of which were donated to ArtSouth. Another project originating in Klein-Young’s class focused on ceramics students. The students created realistic replicas of their favorite foods out of clay and held a silent auction, earning $500 in cash donations for
Camillus House’s art program. “The Camillus House project fused the idea of creating ceramic pop-food projects with awareness of hunger and homelessness in Miami-Dade County,” said Klein-Young.

HE END OF SCHOOL MEANS THE BEGINNING OF A “TRAFfic holiday” both within Palmetto Bay and throughout Miami-Dade County. It is for this reason that our temporary (90 day program) traffic calming will not be installed for those areas in line for installation until September, 2016. There is no reason to have the 90 day period running while school is out. We continue to work on long range traffic and transportation solutions. Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay, Homestead and Florida City remain committed to working with the MPO and Miami-Dade County (through and thank you to Mayor Gimenez, and our district 8 Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava) to bring light rail to the transportation corridor (formerly known as the US1 busway). Remember that our Hurricane Season starts June 1st. Miami-Dade County and all local municipalities have disaster preparedness websites. I invite you to read up and update your personal disaster preparedness plans prior to storm season. Click on the link for “Disaster Preparedness” on the right side (under “information” of the home page our official web site:PalmettoBay-fl.gov Please keep up with all the events, meetings and ongoing public works projects going on in our village through the official village website:palmettobay-fl.gov. I also keep up on issues through my blog found ateugeneflinn.com. Please continue to keep me up to date with what is important to you. My direct e-mail is eflinn@ palmettobay-fl.gov. OR MOST MEN THE PRACTICE OF getting a haircut is more pain than pleasure; a five-minute ritual that evokes little thought. But what if the men’s haircut could be more than that? Enter Sport Clips. Founded in Austin, Texas in 1993, the walk-ins welcome, flat-screen boasting, stylish franchise now has more than 1,500 locations in the US and Canada and, thanks to father-son partners Steve and Frank Risi, has brought its convenient charm to South Florida’s community of men and boys. “We came across Sport Clips and saw that it had its own niche,” says Frank, who after graduating from Gulliver and the University of Miami went looking for a business in which to follow in his father’s entrepreneurial footsteps. “There’s a demand for it in this area; for a place to get a haircut at an affordable price and enjoy unique services.” Those unique services center around what Sport Clips dubs their MVP Experience, which includes a precision haircut, massaging shampoo, hot steamed towel and neck and shoulder massage… all for $23 (plus all the sports you can watch mid-haircut). Cuts are executed by stylists specially trained in male hair care and styling, all of whom receive ongoing training to stay on top of industry trends. The shops also boast an array of men’s products, complimentary neck trims between cuts, special cuts for younger clients and beard trimming and detailing.

After deciding to embark on the journey (“We really liked the sports-themed environment and business potential,” says Frank), the Risi’s traveled to Austin for a week of training at the company’s home base, returning even more passionate about their decision. “We learned so much in Austin,” says Frank. “We came back and it took a few months to get going because we had a good idea of where we wanted the stores located.” The first shop opened in May of last year in the London Square shopping center in Kendall and the second opened June 1 in the Colonial Palms shopping center off of 136th street in Palmetto Bay, but the Risi’s plan to add more locations to their Sport Clips family in the next few years. And speaking of family, the duo say their close relationship (both are avid fishermen) has only aided in their business partnership, with the younger Risi taking cues from his “experienced” father (a Palmetto Senior High School alum). “It’s a great learning experience to work with my Dad,” he says. “It’s a lot more valuable than any graduate school I could have gone to. I’m getting to learn one-on-one, hands-on, on a daily basis.”
Sport Clips is located in the Colonial Palm Plaza at 13611 South Dixie Highway (SW 136 St and US1) in Palmetto Bay. Please call 305.235.1801 for more information or visit SportClips.com/FL504.

E ARE LUCKY TO LIVE IN A CITY THAT OFFERS MULtiple after-school choices for kids. Besides learning a new skill, after-school activities often pave the way into a career and oftentimes serve as an entrée into a great college. I see it in my studio every day. I have students who take violin, swimming and gymnastics in addition to ballet. With that being said, sometimes it is easier to schedule a private lesson than to enroll your child in a class, since private lessons are usually easier to fit into a child’s schedule. I see reasons for private lessons fall into three categories. The first would be that the student wants to better their technique and flexibility. Another reason would be to start an older, beginner student on the path to ballet. The third reason would be to specifically choreograph and coach a piece for a competition or performance. While I do feel that private lessons are wonderful for most children, it is extremely important that a student also take group lessons so they can integrate what they have learned from the private lesson to a classroom setting. They can also measure their own improvement and successes by comparing and watching other students. Finally, is the comradery of a group of girls sharing the small things like blisters, new leotards and new hairstyles. Social interaction is very important for children. Although I very much love teaching private lessons, I love to see a student’s growth inside the classroom as well. When his or her face lights up because we spent an hour on turns in their private lesson and now they can do it perfectly in class, it is so rewarding not only for a student, but for the teacher as well. Another reason for a private lesson is to start an older, beginner student on the path to ballet. A few years ago I had three 12 year olds start ballet with private lessons. We worked over the summer and by the fall session, they were all ready to join the class and level of their age group. I always encourage starting dance at any age and sometimes a student need a few private lessons to jump start him or her into the appropriate level. This is true even when students come to me from other dance studios, or even from other ballet studios. The other reason for private lessons is to teach a student a solo for a competition, recital, etc. This is where I caution most parents. Private lessons are more expensive than regular classes. Here is a question you should ask any teacher: Are you paying a flat rate for the solo or are you paying per hour? If you haven’t had interaction with your teacher regarding private lessons, make sure you know what you are paying for upfront. I always speak with each of my student’s parents when I start private lessons with a child. I make sure we have a game plan for the amount of lessons they have purchased, and I make sure we have crossed everything off the list when they are done with their sessions. If a student is young, (generally ten and under) I usually speak with the parent about what exactly they want to work on, although many times it is obvious. If the parent doesn’t know but just wants private lessons, I will work with the child and then discuss with the parents afterwards what the major issues are and how we go about working on them. With older students, I usually discuss it directly with them. The usual desired outcomes are: increased flexibility, better and more turns, more strength in their feet for pointe, and a lot of the time, just learning how to pick up exercises quicker. All in all, I do think private lessons are awesome so long as they lead to a desired outcome for the student, the teacher and the parent. I encourage parents to be part of the private lesson process as well. No, I don’t suggest you sit in on the class but I do suggest following up with the teacher to make sure you are spending your money wisely!

2ND ANNUAL FATHER’S DAY FE ATURE
FAMILY TIES
FORGET SUNDAY DINNERS AND HOLIDAYS, THESE FATHERS AND CHILDREN TAKE TOGETHERNESS TO A NEW LEVEL AS THEY MERGE BUSINESS AND FAMILY. HERE’S HOW THEY DO IT, WHAT THEY’VE LEARNED AND WHY IT’S BROUGHT THEM CLOSER THAN EVER… BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
HOWARD S. REEDER, INC.
Steele Reeder, Trey Reeder and Alicyn Reeder-Drujak Larry and Ross Reeder
ON CONNECTIONS: Alicyn: “I think working with my father [Steele] has brought us closer. Now we not only connect on a personal level but on a professional level as well. It’s these different perspectives that have allowed me to fully realize what an incredible man he is.” Larry: “One of the best parts of working [with my son Ross] is having the opportunity to lunch together and share experiences.”
ON FAMILY BUSINESS: David: “The best thing about working together is working with someone who has the company’s, and your, best interest at heart.”
ON TRUST: Steele: “There is no better feeling for me than to introduce clients to my children [Alicyn and Trey] who have such an active role in the advancement of the company. The most surprising thing for me is that I find myself going to them for ideas and opinions more then maybe they come to me.” Alicyn: “I’ve learned from my father how to have complete faith in your children’s ability. Very early on he bestowed responsibilities upon me that at times I was not sure if I would be able to handle. His unwavering faith in my abilities gave me the confidence to always be successful.”
SOUTHERN PACKAGING MACHINERY CORPORATION
David Raska and Audrey Raska Phillips
ON LESSONS LEARNED:
ON EACH OTHER:
Audrey: “I’ve learned a multitude of valuable lessons from my father, but the most prominent lesson is to survey the entire situation thoroughly before making a major decision.” David: “Audrey has taught me how to pay more attention to detail and to not procrastinate.”
Audrey: “Not only am I afforded the opportunity to see my father every day, but I’m able to better understand this industry and learn from both him and his peers. My father is very highly regarded in the packaging equipment industry and it’s inspiring to catch him in a moment of brilliance.” David: “Audrey doesn’t stop at success, she strives for perfection.”
MURAI WALD BIONDO & MORENO PLLC
Gerald and Brandon Biondo
ON LIFE BALANCE: ON CREATING A LEGACY: Brandon: “Getting to interface with his clients and their families, and in some cases, starting to work with his clients’ children has created a genuine feeling of family progression within the firm. I look forward to continuing the business once my father eventually retires. Also, the added treat of a free lunch every now and then is not something I’m going to complain about.” Gerald: “Practicing law with Brandon has given me a fresh perspective. The law is constantly evolving and Brandon always has creative solutions to resolving issues our clients face when trying to get deals closed. I have learned to keep an open mind and have grown as a lawyer watching my son in action. He has rejuvenated my career as I would have likely retired a while back, but now look forward to practicing law for several more years.”
ON SURPRISES: Rick: “After 15 years [of working together], we are surprised as to how well we continue to keep our daily lives fresh with new ideas and added value to our clients and the community. We have attained a harmony of passion and brains and have fun sharing in the life experience.”

Brandon: “Growing up, my dad was always active in all aspects of my life, from schoolwork to coaching my sports teams. I never realized the balance this must have taken until I entered the workforce myself. This has taught me the importance of being present and involved in my two sons’ lives. I now coach my oldest son’s basketball team, which is the very same league that my dad coached years ago. The importance of having a balanced life at home while working hard every day in the office has been such an important example for me in my life.”
TONKINSON FINANCIAL, INC.
Rick and Steven Tonkinson
ON LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER: Rick: “Steven is a true renaissance man who is talented and knowledgeable in many diverse topics. I learn new facets of Steven when we are talking to clients that I enjoy very much.” Steven: “My dad is open-minded and willing to adjust to the numerous business and community projects we are involved in. He is my role model on giving back to the community. His focus is to be efficient and effective.”
2ND ANNUAL FATHER’S DAY FE ATURE
ON COMMUNICATION: Kim: “We have worked together for 5 years but [my father-in-law] has been in my life since I was 19 years old. He has really helped me transform from a more corporate mindset into to the mind a small business owner.” Ted: “We must always be aware that whatever we say or do carries over to the rest of our lives. Kim is very kind and always puts up with my requests… however, she does have a mind of her own and shares with me what she thinks. The best thing about that is that we care for each other enough to be able to express ourselves openly, knowing that whatever we say to each other is for the betterment of our family business.”
ON TRADITION: Ted: “The thing that surprises me the most is how much Kim is similar to [my wife] Janice. She is a hard worker and is kind to all the customers. She tries to please everyone and is very tolerant, but she still has the ability to put her foot down and resolve issues.” Kim: “My in-laws have really shown me that the people who walk through our doors aren’t just customers, but friends and family within a business that has been around for more than 50 years. Each person has a story and an individual need and I try to remember that every day.”
HIRNI’S WAYSIDE GARDEN FLORIST
Ted and Kim Tate
ON BALANCE: Kim: “Being part of a family business he has helped instill in me that even though business is very important family comes first. Running back and forth to the kids school for special events or just to take them to an afterschool activity is important, and if I am unavailable to make it he is always happy to do it. It is most surprising and inspiring to me what a well balanced life he leads.”
CLARIN EYE CARE
Drs. Bruce and Adam Clarin ON SHARED VALUES: Adam: “I’ve learned that people and relationships are the keys to success. There are always ways to make more money but nothing will propel your success like treating people well. My dad has built his entire practice on integrity and respect- two things that are the backbone of Clarin Eye Care to this day.” Bruce: “From being a past president of the Pinecrest Business Association to dealing with patients at our office and even our staff, Adam has such a charismatic personality and it has not only helped him bring in patients, but also become such a respected member of this community.”
ON LEARNING NEW THINGS: Adam: “I never knew my dad was so funny. I hear patients laughing all day long throughout the office and I know that his humor is part of why they enjoy coming to our office.” Bruce: “Adam brought a new energy into the office. It has truly been a pleasure to see him grow into the optometrist he is today, and it gives me such a feeling of pride to hear patients tell me how great of an eye doctor he is and how much they respect him.”
THE YOUNG GROUP
Rocky and Dustin Young
ON GROWING AND CHANGING: Bruce: “Since Adam has joined, he has completely transformed our office. From the technological improvements to the recent expansion of our office, Adam has had the drive and the vision to transform Clarin Eye Care into Palmetto Bay’s premier eye care center.”
ON SHARING IDEAS: Rocky: I’ve been surprised by how much we think alike and how well we get along [at work]. It’s wonderful to be able to pass along years of experience to Dustin and work with a highly intelligent and motivated partner. Dustin: One of the best parts of working together is our deep conversations about investment ideas and how to best implement into our practice. We have a lot of fun bouncing ideas off each other.
ON LESSONS LEARNED: Dustin: I’ve really learned how to be patient and not let my emotions dictate my decision. Rocky: I’ve learned what a great job I’ve done as a father! Just kidding-I have learned a lot about being organized from Dustin.
MIAMI AWNING COMPANY
Michael, Joe and Dan Reilly
ON FAMILY BUSINESS: Michael: “I worked with my Dad for 20 years before he retired and have worked with my sons about five years. I get to see my sons every day and working with them has been a life lesson, as I have learned their strengths and also their weaknesses. It’s a good thing, though, because it helps us all to understand one another better and in a new light.
ON PAST AND FUTURE: Michael: “I’ve learned that my father was right about many things. Especially to not worry about what others are doing but only about what you are doing. It’s the only thing you can change. I learn about myself more every day by working with my sons. My sister, who has worked with me for more than 30 years, says it’s my comeuppance. But it’s important to have a younger fresh view in the mix. I love it!”

R E AL ESTAT E TALK
All In The Family BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
F
AMILY-RUN BUSINESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE ALWAYS at the ready to deliver excellent customer service to their patrons. It’s the lifeline of the business that makes it sustainable for years to come. Families depend directly on the business for an income that then gets injected back into the local economy when buying goods and services. Kids and adults use the infrastructure that our great community provides, including restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, parks, movie theaters, retailers and all you can think of. They generate federal income tax, state taxes and property taxes for the local municipality. The homes where these families live contribute with property taxes as well. Families care about each other and are willing to go the extra mile with their business to help one another. It’s refreshing to speak with a vendor that listens and responds without the use of scripts to address the issue. Family businesses can adapt to the individual circumstance and do what is right with autonomy in decisions — that right there is one reason why family run businesses will always have a market, their ability to make decisions at market speed. Another benefit is that those businesses can depend on family members to deliver complete service; it’s inherent. There is built-in accountability to ensure that. The marketing that promotes the business creates accountability with the community to deliver on the promise of excellent customer service. Right? Generational long-term service provides real-life opportunities to demonstrate shared values, work ethic and the consequences of every day decisions and actions. It shows the next generation how to work and make an honest living and allows them to set realistic goals for their future. A family that works together wins together and shares challenges when they come. This creates different perspectives with the same end goal, but with no hidden agenda or politics. It breeds transparency and trust in each other to do whatever has to be done, rain or shine. The juice that propels the business comes from the very basic need to provide for each other, now and in the future. A veritable raison d’être (purpose of being). In fact, we recently had the pleasure to work with a family that has been in the same business for nineteen generations. They have just moved here and are setting up their business. Welcome! Families that own businesses also care about the community by giving their time and talents. They show community care by contributing as committee leaders or within social groups in town, including coaching sports teams, organizing fund raising, participating in local council meetings, donating to charities and actively engaging with others for the improvement of quality of life. It takes a village to raise a child and we’re blessed to live in an area where people help each other. Sometimes random opportunity gives strangers a chance to teach a simple lesson. There are more people doing good than the opposite. Look and see for yourself. We do need family time and to keep separate the conversations about the business. That is a challenge in and of itself. Our own standard is to not discuss business after 7 p.m..We recognize that when we are blessed with business, it is part of our job to have down time that allows us rest and gives us the energy and clarity of mind to deliver on our promise of excellent service. 90 years after its inception, The Keyes Company continues to deliver services to you in South Florida. We are truly dedicated to and dependent of the local market. A Miami family owns and operates the company that then contributes right back to the local community. The DeValdivielso Team is part of this company and we are now into our second generation and counting… Thank you for your support!

IT ’S T HEIR BU S INES S
A Kendall Gem Comes to Palmetto Bay BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
M
IAMI NATIVE WILLY PALOMINO FOUND HIS calling at a young age. In fact, the secondgeneration jeweler (his father owned a jewelry store in Havana before coming to the US) says he has never had a job outside the jewelry world. “My first job as a teenager was in a jewelry shop and my first business by myself was a jewelry store,” says Palomino, who opened the second location of Palomino Jewelry in the King’s Bay shopping center last month. “I never wanted to do anything else.” After cutting his teeth in Miami’s famed Downtown jewelry district, Palomino went out on his own, eventually finding his way to Kendall Drive and 107th avenue, where Palomino Jewelry has been drawing customers for more years than the owner can remember. “The retail business is incredible,” he says with a laugh. “Time really flies when you’re inside a store.” During that time Palomino’s business has drawn a steady stream of raves for their dedication to their clients and above-and-beyond customer service. For Palomino that can mean anything from helping customers choose an investment piece (more on that later) to fixing a watch. “The jewelry business is a very family oriented business,” he says. “You really have to trust the person that you’re dealing with. People know when you are doing 100 percent to help them and make them feel good. You can sense that.” Palomino also make a point to bring in brands that will appeal to his clientele,
whether it’s the ever-popular Pandora line or baby jewelry for special occasions. At the heart of it all lately, though, is one idea, according to Palomino. “I think it’s about affordable luxury right now,” he says of his bestsellers. “You can mix and match pieces and wear it every day. You don’t have to save it and wear it only when you go out anymore. Alex and Ani, Pandora… those are fun lines to wear.” He also sees a move away from the traditional generational divide when it comes to jewelry. “Especially with Pandora, it’s so affordable, you can add a bead for $25 and it appeals to the little girls, the woman and the grandma. Everybody wears it.” When it comes to investment items, Palomino is steadfast in his belief that diamonds are always the correct choice. And with the plethora of information out there now, he says it’s easier than ever to make good choices when buying a more expensive piece. “People are so much more informed,” he says, noting an abundance of websites with gemology information. His advice? Go for quality over quantity. “People tend to want a big diamond and don’t care so much about quality, and I always tell them go smaller and look closely at the diamond.” For now, Palomino is settling into his second location and working on refreshing the store’s look as well as its website. But his main concern remains the same. “I’m a small operation,” he says. “We concentrate on people.” For more information on Palomino Jewelry, please visit palominojewelrymiami.com.

LTHOUGH MANY OF US STRUGGLE WITH THE IDEA OF WEARING WHITE before Memorial Day and after Labor Day, rest assured incorporating white into our daily wardrobe is always acceptable. This is particularly true for those of us that are fortunate enough to live in hot and humid climates like Miami. With temperatures hitting the 90’s, what could be more refreshing than cool, crisp whites? Here are some subtle ways to add hot summer whites into your wardrobe. White T-Shirt: A basic white t-shirt is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you will ever own. However, as basic as a white tee might be, the hunt to find the “perfect” one can be challenging. Make sure to try on several different brands and fits to find the perfect one for your body type. One of my favorites is J.Crew’s Vintage Cotton V-Neck, $30, with its heathered fabric and slightly loose fit. Pair with some white jeans and a white blazer for chic, fresh look. Or, if you’re feeling risqué, pair with a black lace bra and black jeans for a night out on the town. White Dress: Just like its counterpart, the LBD (little black dress), white dresses are extremely versatile and can be glammed up or down with just a few key accessories. White pairs well with any color but, remember, anything you wear with your white dress will stand out so use color sparingly. Look for shades of white that complement your skin tone. If you’re very fair skinned, look for warmer shades of white with a slight yellow undertone which will add warmth to your skin. For olive or medium skin tones, opt for cool whites like ivory. If you’re dark skinned, almost any shade of white will look great on you. One of my favorites right now is lace edged, off-shoulder dress currently sold at Threads Boutique. Flirty, feminine and the perfect LWD for summer. White Jeans: Thankfully, fabrics and jean styles have evolved so that they can now be worn year round… even in the Miami summer. Read the labels and opt for a pair of white jeans with a cotton, polyester, and elastane blend. Fabrics with this combination tend to be thinner, lightweight, and perfect for warmer weather. Destroyed denim is also a hot trend right now and plays right into warm weather fashion. I love AG’s The Legging Ankle Skinny ($168) which feels more like a lightweight jegging than a pair of jeans. J Brand’s Demented White Distressed jean ($178) is another great pair with just the right amount of distress on the knees and hem. A word to the wise… stick to nude colored undies! White Sneakers: During the summer months, when many of us travel, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is a must have. Do you really want to be limping across the streets of Paris in high heels with blistered feet? I’m obsessed with the Italian brand Superga Cotu sneakers. I find them to be a lot more comfortable than Converse and I love that they come in a zillion different colors and styles. Another great option is the Sam Smith Adidas shoe ($75). First introduced in 1973, this classic and iconic sneaker has made a huge comeback this year and, luckily, it is both trendy AND comfortable. I’m a huge fan of monochromatic outfits and all-white is a timeless look that anyone can pull off. Try wearing a white t-shirt, white jeans, and white sneakers as one of your summer outfits. Throw on some accessories and a contrasting bag or clutch for a little pop of color. Experiment and find what works for you. After all, style is about the mix, not the trend.

INYL RECORDS. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. HOMESTEAD AIR FORCE BASE. Professional musician. Vinyl record awards. Excellent customer service. Music lessons. Are you wondering what this list represents? What these words have in common? The list represents the characteristics and service provided at Musicians Discount Center in South Florida. Did you know that this now full service, customer-focused music store started as a “small” vinyl record business – only selling vinyl records that were purchased at flea markets? Mike Cohen, a long-time professional drummer and owner of Musicians Discount Center is very proud of the history of his store and how far they have come. He opened “one of the first used vinyl record stores” in Florida – Records & Things – just outside the Homestead Air Force Base in 1981, after being “on the road” playing opening acts for the Allman Brothers. During the 80’s, business was booming and welcomed a second music store in Cutler Bay (its current Mike Cohen (middle), owner of Musicians Discount Center, and his staff. location). But with the devastating ruins of Hurricane Andrew, his first music store was demolished. And after nine long months of work, diligence and reinvestment, the Musicians Discount Center, a “one of a kind music store” was once again a member of the business community. The doors were re-opened to its customers from Florida and throughout the County in 1993. For over 27 years, the Musicians Discount Center has offered the services you can count on and an inventory that is second to none. The store is unique in South Florida because it carries such a wide variety of music products. Services include: band instruments and professional Musicians Discount Center carries everything for your music needs. sound equipment rentals, rent-to-own program, instrument and amp repairs, music lessons for students and adults, and the sale of new and used instruments. It also has an extensive vinyl collection. In 2014, Musicians Discount Center was voted one of Miami’s Five Best Record stores, the best place to buy vinyl, by New Times. Musicians Discount Center was also voted 2015 & 2016 Best of the Best by the readers of The Florida Villager. As for Mike, you will see him around town, playing the drums in various jazz bands. He shares his love of music with others through his store. Visit the Musicians Discount Center, see the wonders of music and meet the man that made his dream a reality in South Florida. You won’t be disappointed!

A Weekend of Folly in South Carolina BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
S
UMMER IS HERE AND THAT MEANS SUN AND SAND. TIRED OF THE MIAMI beaches and looking for a change of venue? Make your way to Folly Beach in South Carolina. Just a hop, skip and a jump in flip flops from downtown Charleston, sits what locals term the Edge of America. Driving into town reminded me of a smaller version of Key West. A quick decision to check things out prompted me to park my Jeep and take a stroll down Center Street. This quaint street is lined with funky boutiques, unique artwork, local restaurants and of course, everything one needs for the beach. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the diversity that abounds here. Passing by a bar called The Drop In I could smell what turned out to be one heck of an amazing burger. Sitting down, I struck up a conversation with one of the locals and learned that The Drop In is the local hangout and not to be missed in Folly. From there, I decided to make my way to Water’s Edge Inn where I would be taking up residence for 3 days. One look and I knew I was going to be hard pressed to leave. My room, with fireplace included, looked out over a marsh and an outdoor hot tub I planned on using that night. A quick change into my bathing suit and I was off to see how I could get to the beach. Entering into the main house, I came across a wonderful spread of wine and cheese; happy hour was in full swing. Learning I had a choice of a bike or complimentary golf cart shuttle, I opted for the bike ride, as I wanted to explore on my way. Taking the side streets to the beach gave me the opportunity to see all the cute clapboard houses and wonder about the people that live in this unique town. Finally on the beach, I staked out my spot and began to people watch while listening to the surf against the shore. Everyone was doing something, whether it was boating, paddle boarding, kayaking, surfing, fishing or just catching some rays. My sense is the people here don’t care what you wear, drive or do; they just care about being. What a refreshing way of life. I had heard someone say the best sunset was from the marina so off I went, getting side tracked briefly at a Bohemian-looking outdoor bar called Chico Feo. Two cucumber lemonade sakes later and I was pedaling over to the marina to see one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. Back at the inn, I turned in my bike, showered, dressed and started walking back into town to scope out the nightlife. I had gotten one block out and could hear music coming from somewhere. Not being sure where it would lead me, the thought of a scavenger hunt was intriguing, so I followed the trail of notes. It led me straight to Snapper Jacks. Up on the rooftop a man was singing and playing the guitar where a nice size crowd had assembled. I ordered a Snappers Colada (made with strawberry moonshine) and took up a seat by the railing so I could see it all, above and below. I have to admit; my next two days were more of the same, as I didn’t want to change a thing. I did take a walk over to Folly Pier, which is the second longest pier on the east coast, to check out the spectacular views, but, for the most part, I had my spot at the beach and on Snappers rooftop. As I mentioned earlier, it appears the way of life here is just about being and I always say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” And I did. OST RUNNERS FEEL THEIR RUNNING ACTIVITIES ALONE provide them with a well-rounded exercise program. However, while running is great cardiovascular work, it can lead to imbalances in the body. Those imbalances can sideline runners and must be addressed in order to continue the activity in a healthy and beneficial way. Pilates is an excellent complement to any runner’s routine as it can help strengthen muscles to allow for decreased stress on the body during running. There are many different kinds of runners. There are marathoners and other distance cravers who may or may not be competitive; there are short distance runners who also may or may not compete and then there are casual runners who just try to fit in a few miles a week to keep their cardiovascular systems in good working order. No matter which type of runner, the same muscle groups are used to propel the body forward. Primarily, the hip flexors to pull the top of the leg forward, the quadriceps to extend the knee then tibialis anterior to flex the foot and prepare to plant the forward foot. Once down, that leg is pulled back using the gluteus and hamstrings. The big issue here is that while in that running gait, the runner’s body is moving in the sagittal plane, therefore the muscles that support movement in the horizontal and frontal planes are not challenged specifically. Runners can exhibit imbalances in a number of different ways. Some may have tight hip flexors on one side and a tight IT band on the other due to an instability in the pelvic girdle. Some runners may have great quadriceps strength but poor posterior hip strength causing asymmetries with each stride creating low back or knee pain. Ever wonder why your plantar fasciitis or IT band tendonitis never seems to really go away? It’s generally because of imbalances elsewhere in the body that go untreated.

What is Hospice?
H
OSPICE IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF MEDICAL CARE AND SUPPORT for people nearing the end of life. The Hospice philosophy is based on several ideas: »» No one should die alone or in pain. »» Life-limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress as well as physical pain, all of which deserve quality professional attention and compassionate care. »» A serious illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice provides pain management and appropriate palliative care, care that focuses on the patient’s comfort, when curative medical treatments no longer enhance quality of life. Hospice strives to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and provides support for the entire family during the illness and for at least one year after a patient’s death. Most Hospice Care is provided at home, where people most want to be when they are ill. Hospice Care can also be provided in a nursing or residential facility and in certain circumstances, in a hospital or hospice management residence. Hospice Dr Ismael Roque-Velasco President and Chief Executive Officer also provides medications, medical Hospice Care of South Florida equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort at home or in other Hospice settings. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. The focus shifts toward helping the patient achieve the maximum quality of life by focusing on their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Hospice Care vs. Standard Medical Care Some differences between Hospice Care and Medical care are: »» Hospice looks at all of the patient’s and their family’s needs. A coordinated team of hospice professionals, assisted by volunteers, work to meet the patient’s and family’s emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the patient’s physical needs. »» An emphasis is put on controlling pain and symptoms through the most advanced techniques available as well as on emotional and spiritual support tailored to the needs of the patient and their family. »» Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects not only affects the person who is ill, but the entire family as well. The family and patient is the “unit of care” for hospice professionals. At times, other family members may actually need more attention than the patient.
Who pays for Hospice care? Hospice palliative care is covered 100% by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, with no out-of-pocket costs to the patient or family. Costs covered related to the terminal illness, including the services of the Hospice team, medications, medical equipment and supplies. Contact Hospice Care of South florida to learn more on how they can you and your loved ones in your time of need.

How to Perform Easy Pet CPR BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN
K
NOWING HOW TO PERFORM CPR ON AN ANIMAL IS A MUST FOR EVERY PET OWNER. THERE ARE certain emergency situations where action is required immediately, even before considering driving the pet to the nearest emergency clinic. It only takes three minutes for an animal that is not breathing to develop permanent brain damage. Knowing how to perform CPR correctly is a must, since we can make the condition worse by utilizing an incorrect technique. Not all information found on the internet on how to perform pet CPR is accurate. Add that to the fact that pet CPR techniques are modified every few years for efficiency, and it’s easy to understand why there is so much confusion on how to perform CPR on pets. Animal CPR refers to a series of chest compressions and artificial respirations performed on an unconscious animal. Remember, the animal must be unconscious; a weak pet that has collapsed but is conscious does not need CPR, and has the potential to bite due to fear or pain or both. CPR will not be effective on animals that show cardiac-respiratory arrest due to chronic diseases, such as cancer or cardiac conditions. With all of this in mind, let’s move on to the latest pet CPR techniques:
BASIC PET CPR 1. Recognize that the pet is unconscious If the pet is unconscious he/she will not be responsive, the pupils will be dilated, there will be no respiration, the gums will be blueish, and there will be a very weak or nonexistent heartbeat. If the pet seems unconscious but you are not sure if it is breathing or if there is a heartbeat, initiate CPR anyway. Quickly place the pet on a firm surface such as a sidewalk or a table, and make sure the head is aligned with the spine. Open the mouth and look for any object that might be blocking the air passages such as a piece of a bone, a hard treat, a ball, etc., and remove it if present.

Our Mission To provide the best and latest medical care to every patient by combining Conventional Medical approach with safe and effective Alternative Medicine methods.
Initiate Artificial Respiration Pull the tongue out of the mouth and let it hang on the side. Gently close the muzzle with your hand. Make an airtight seal by surrounding the pet’s nose (or the whole muzzle if it’s a small dog or cat) with your lips, then blow in the nostrils for 2 seconds, pause, and repeat once more, so you provide two artificial respirations.
Maintain the respiration-cardiac compression cycles
Perform two artificial respirations followed by 30 cardiac compression cycles for 10 minutes. Check every two minutes to see if the pet is breathing on its own and/or has a heartbeat. Remember to be patient: in a best case scenario, it will take at least a minute for your compressions to successfully bring blood into the heart and for you to start noticing signs of improvement such as pink gums. Your chest compressions are not as efficient as a natural cardiac compression. They only produce 30 percent of the cardiac output produced by a natural heartbeat, so be persistent while performing the respiration-compression cycles. You must take your pet to the nearest emergency clinic after 10 minutes, even if you were successful performing the CPR technique. Animals that have gone into cardiac or respiratory arrest need further medical care to ensure their survival. When performed at the right time with the right technique, CPR can save a pet’s life. The most important thing to remember is to stay calm, quickly analyze the situation and then take immediate action. You might save your best friend’s life one day. Initiate cardiac compressions Blood circulation (compressions) is addressed before respiration, since artificial respiration will be ineffective if the heart is not pumping blood into the body. Place one hand on each side of the chest at the level of the animal’s heart (this is the point where the elbow comes in contact with the chest when you flex the pets elbow and shoulder all the way towards the back). For cats and little dogs, perform the compressions with just one hand, fingers on one side of the chest and the palm of the hand on the other side, as if squeezing a squeaky toy. Compress the chest 30 times at a rhythm of 2 compressions per second. To make this task easier, follow the rhythm of the Bee Gees 1983 hit song “Staying Alive” in your mind. Compress the chest for 30 compressions before going to the next step.

There’s Always a Next, Never an Only BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
I
N LIFE THERE ARE CHANGES, SO instead of wallowing in them choose to embrace those changes. With change comes amazing opportunity; opportunity to grow emotionally, spiritually, physically and to acquire a new perspective. The problem is not the problem but our reaction to our perceived problem. See, lots of times we think we have a problem because of our choice to perceive it as a problem. It’s all about our mindset. One way to get back into the flow of life is to have the mindset, “There’s always a Next, never an Only.” How many times have we said, this is my one and only car, house, job, boyfriend, only to find down the road another car comes along that we like better, has nicer features and suits us better at that time in our lives? So, my point is, just because this relationship/ marriage didn’t work out, it doesn’t mean that it’s your Only - there is a Next. Have a “no exception rule.” That means, no matter what happens in your life, your mindset about yourself and your life won’t change. With an “Only” mindset, you view life as if the best has already happened. With a
“Next” mentality, you view life with hope and expectation that the best is yet to come. You have the ability to write a new chapter in your book of life. How exciting! What do you wish for? Strive towards that wish. Keep yourself focused and ask yourself everyday, “Is what I am doing laying the foundation for that wish or tearing it down?” “Am I thinking big or thinking small?” Moving into your next chapter also allows you to unearth your passions. Ask yourself these questions to help you start thinking in that direction but keep in mind the important element here is to answer them not intellectually but from the heart. »» What do I love? »» What things inspire me? »» What must I have in my life for it to be meaningful? »» What are my core passions, values and beliefs? »» When I remember the best/worst time in my life, what passion, value or belief was present or missing? Another thing “yet to come” is a relationship. Ask yourself how are you going to approach this new chapter. What mindset will accompany you? What behavior will you change? What relationship/emotional boundaries will you set? What are the promises you will make to
yourself? Here are 5 promises to get you going: »» I will control my situation even if it’s with my mindset. »» I will not let someone else dictate how I feel about myself. »» I will not compromise my integrity or self worth in order to have a relationship. »» I will not stay in a relationship that doesn’t lift me up and »» I will let that person go and say, “Next.” Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). My PAWSitive Pups Words of Wisdom BY TAMI MAIER
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
I
N THE PAST MONTH I HAVE PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED LIFE ON AN EMOTIONAL roller coaster. Sometimes the ups and downs of life happen so fast that before we can truly appreciate the joy all of a sudden we are whisked away with a worry, never allowing ourselves to feel our true emotions because we are moving thru life so quickly. It seems like yesterday I was a single mom of an infant, three-year-old, fiveyear-old.... Fast forward to 2016 and this month my second son will graduate from Westminster Christian High School. How is it possible that I have a 20-, 19-, 17- and 14-year-old? They were just babies it seems! As I smile for my son, Hunter, who is so excited to say goodbye to grade school days and move on to his next chapter in life., a piece of me says I wish I could do it all over again. A chance to savor every moment without letting our fast paced world push me thru the priceless moments too quickly. So you may be asking yourself, she usually writes about dogs so why is she writing about her life story? I work with dogs of all shapes and sizes on a daily basis and they all seem to be tuned into my every emotion. I believe if we could see life thru a dog’s eyes we could truly enjoy life as it is meant to be enjoyed. My PAWSitive Pups without ever saying a word have taught me these lessons: 1. Chase your dreams. 2. Keep your eye on the ball. 3. Never walk alone. 4. Make time for play. 5. Recognize opportunity and go for it. 6. Be persistent and dig deep. 7. Always leave your mark. 8. Celebrate the little things. 9. Make everyday special. 10. Love unconditionally. So to all of my clients, friends and family that will be celebrating the graduations of your children this month, no matter what age they are, I encourage you to remember to see things thru the eyes of a dog and have a heart as big and forgiving as a puppy!

The Predictability of Lightning and Cosmetic Surgery Safety BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI, FL

that amazing price. Here is a little advice: Do your homework. Just because a friend had a procedure at a high volume center, and did OK, doesn’t mean you will be as lucky. Visit the ASPS website (ASPS.org,) and become educated on who should perform your procedure and what certifications the facility should have. Do a bit of research on their track record, and read reviews (the good, the bad, and the ugly). An infection can set you back thousands of dollars in lost work time, and further medical expenses. A botched job can cost you triple to fix. So now that really cheap surgery has become very expensive. Unfortunately, some have paid with their lives. So by all means come to Miami to enjoy more affordable plastic surgery, just be very, very, careful where you stand. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, resultsmd.com or email info@soler-baillo.com.

NE OF THE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT MIAMI IS THAT it has one of the most electrically active atmospheres in the world… and I’m not talking about the nightlife. Lightning strikes this fun town thousands of times every year, unfortunately causing several deaths. Having great experience with lightning, most Floridians have learned how to decrease their chances of being struck. During a thunderstorm common sense takes over, we get indoors, we don’t stand under a tree, some even skip the 18th hole. Why? Because we have, in some crude way, noticed the statistics of lightning strikes. Then I wonder, why do people risk their lives every day undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures in mass production surgery centers? I’m not pointing fingers here, I’m just pointing out that while cosmetic surgery can be a rewarding experience, all surgery carries risk. Cosmetic surgery complications are rare, and those resulting in death is even rarer. Thousands of people are flocking to Miami from around the world to experience the boon of cosmetic surgery. Most of these beauty pilgrims are attracted by the amazingly low prices here. The product of warring cosmetic surgery centers that continue to stab at each other’s hearts with yet a more affordable price. Some board certified plastic surgeons are violating the code of ethics using questionable marketing strategies in order to attract patients. Mass production, performed by detached physicians, guided by unscrupulous businessmen is a veritable lightning rod. In the constant effort to control costs, many centers start cutting back on a very important part of the equation, safety. Just think of it this way, when you have gotten the best price anywhere for your procedure, just imagine where the center has cut costs in order to provide you with
