A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Back to School!
I
T’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT AUGUST IS HERE, AND SCHOOL WILL BE STARTING at the end of the month. Summer has gone by too quickly! Everywhere you look, stores are stocking back-to-school clothes and supplies. Before the structured routines of carpool and after-school activities begin again, we hope everyone is able to relax and enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Don't miss the special Back-ToSchool section of this month's magazine, where you'll find updates on exciting plans for the 2016-2017 school year from local schools as well as helpful tips on everything from backpacks to school lunches (page 18). Elsewhere in the magazine be sure to check out our “5 Questions” column with Mosquito Joe’s Yoel Gutierrez (page 35). The insects are always a hot topic among our communities, but this year the Zika concern has brought it even more to the forefront. Gutierrez offers advice (and service) for those whose yards have become off-limits. Additionally, we’re thrilled to profile Luis Ortega as our August Philanthropist (page 16). His contributions to the South Florida community (and the nation) are truly admirable and, under his leadership, the Rotary Club of MiamiKendall is sure to thrive. As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 8, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town. And don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find an online version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,

SISTER CITY AWARD FOR CORAL GABLES The City of Coral Gables International Affairs Coordinating Council (IACC), a seven-member volunteer advisory board, has been awarded the 2016 Sister Cities International Humanitarian Assistance Award for cities with a population less than 100,000. This award is in recognition of the outstanding exchange work done by the City of Coral Gables to help save the lives of people caught in fire accidents by donating the only hook-and-ladder truck existing in La Antigua, Guatemala. The award was presented by the Washington-based, Sister Cities International at their Annual July Conference. Last April, through the efforts of the IACC and in partnership with the International Affairs Foundation, Coral Gables donated a retired 1988 hook-and-ladder fire truck to its sister city of La Antigua along with other fire equipment such as protective gear and special helmets. The truck was transported from Homestead Air Reserve Base to Guatemala aboard a military cargo jet, thanks to the Denton Program, a Department of Defense transportation initiative that moves humanitarian cargo. A second fire truck from Coral Gables to La Antigua was scheduled to be donated last month. Since the beginning of the sister city agreement in 1993, the City of Coral Gables and La Antigua have enjoyed a strong sister-city bond which have included various cultural art and trade exchanges.

Church of the Little Flower Celebrates its 90th Anniversary BY SPENCER DAVIS
I
N THE SPRING OF 1926, THE ONE-YEAR-OLD city of Coral Gables became home to Church of the Little Flower. Now celebrating its 90th anniversary, the church has grown from 800 parishioners to being an ever-growing community of more than 3,000 registered households. “What makes a church so great is its people,” Church of the Little Flower’s Associate Director of Music and Pastoral Resource Officer Luis Cuza said. “It’s not so much about a building; it’s about the people that come into the building.” Cuza credits the leadership of the priests and pastors with making Church of the Little Flower so unique and describes the parish as a trendsetter among other Catholic parishes. “We are a place where seminarians come to get formation, not just from archdiocese but also from other diocese around the country,” the fourth-year employee said. “This is a place where newly ordained priests come first and we are certainly a trendsetter. I’ll never forget that when the terrorist attack happened in Paris we started doing, as a postlude, the French national anthem on Sundays and soon after we started doing it, other Catholic parishes started doing it as well.” The parish has seen big changes since its inception, including the construction of what members refer to as “The New Church,” where Mass has been held since
its dedication on December 8, 1951. Prior to the erection of this church, parishioners used Comber Hall, which was named in honor of the community’s founding father, Irish missionary priest Father Thomas Comber. Roughly 50 ministries now exist in this parish community including the education of children at St. Theresa Catholic School. Of the same namesake, a grotto dedicated to St. Therese has just been built across from the church office building to commemorate Church of the Little Flower’s 90th anniversary. Church of the Little Flower will be hosting a special Mass on October 17 with a reception to follow its conclusion that will be held in Comber Hall. “Every Mass is important and is a celebration, but this is going to be especially large with incredible music, and all of our priests from the parish and Archbishop [Thomas] Wenski will be in attendance, which is a big deal,” Cuza said. “I imagine that thousands of people will attend because a lot of people have been waiting for this. There will even be people there celebrating with us that were also there for the dedication of ‘The New Church.’” Church of the Little Flower is no stranger to history, as the buildings of St. Theresa School and the Church of the Little Flower itself were declared historical sites in the City of Coral Gables. Now under the direction of Father Michael Davis, the parish intends to keep making history for the next 90 years and beyond.

Burger King Presents Students with $3 Million in Scholarships
M
IAMI-BASE D BU RGE R KING’S McLamore Foundation is making more than 2,800 students’ dreams comes true via its Burger King Scholars program. The program, the flagship of the McLamore Foundation, awards scholarships to high school students and Burger King employees, their children and spouses that can be used to fund post-secondary education. This year, the program awarded three $50,000 James W. McLamore WHOPPER® Scholarship Awards, ten $5,000 regional restaurant Team Member scholarships and close to 2,800 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to additional students. Winners were selected from thousands of applicants looking to pursue a secondary education at a university or post-secondary vocational/technical school. “The Burger King McLamore Foundation Foundation is invested in providing students with opportunities to further their education,” said José Cil, President of the Burger King brand and the Burger King McLamore Foundation. “For this reason, we are proud to support these outstanding students in North America with the financial support of the Scholars program.” Amongst the 2016 recipients of the James W. McLamore WHOPPER® Scholarship Awards are Alexia Rieger, an aspiring doctor pursuing a degree in biology; Sophia Bottoms, an ambitious double major who longs to be a bilingual orthodontist; and Sunpreet Singh, a student advocate for civil rights who hopes to practice law and
community advancement. “Being a Burger King Scholar has made me realize that hard work does pay off, and I now feel so much closer to achieving my dreams,” said Sophia Bottoms, one of three Whopper Scholarship award recipients. “This amazing opportunity will allow me more freedom to focus on academic endeavors, without worrying about student loans—which has been one of my dreams!” Throughout the years, the Burger King McLamore Foundation has offered students across North America the opportunity to obtain an affordable education, putting tuition within their reach with scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $50,000. Created in memory of brand co-founder James “Jim” W. McLamore, the Scholars program has awarded $28.3 million in scholarships to more than 26,800 high school students, BK employees and their families across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico since its inception in 2000. The Foundation’s flagship program was established to honor Jim McLamore’s legacy and commitment to philanthropy and education. Award recipients are selected based on their grade point average, extracurricular activities, community service and work experience. The application window opens yearly from Oct. 15 – Dec. 15. For more information on the program, including instructions for obtaining scholarship applications for 2017, please visit bkmclamorefoundation.org.

Luis Ortega BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
Rotary International; Rotary Club of Miami-Kendall
BACKGROUND Ascending to the role of President of Rotary Club of Miami-Kendall was a natural progression for Ortega, who has spent much of his life working in philanthropic roles. From a high school Key Club member to volunteering with Gainesville Pet Rescue in college, Ortega found a calling in volunteerism. But it was his time in the Marines that solidified his dedication. “My first exposure to largescale h umanitarianism occurred during a deployment to East Timor when,as a US Marine officer, I participated in a U N-led Humanitarian Assistance Operation,” he says. “ We provided dental, medical, engineering, and security services to the nascent community. I was struck by the application of strength to e ffect compassion.” Back in Miami, the nowowner of Security Arms International began trips downtown to feed the homeless population. “On all occasions, I witnessed the power of few applied for the benefit of many, and an interest was born.”
ABOUT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL In July 2007, Ortega stopped by a Rotary table at an outdoor fair and began reading about the organization. He was instantly intrigued. “I describe Rotary International as a worldwide, historically successful organization of inspired business and professional leaders who are passionate about pooling resources, sharing best practices, and taking action to tackle the world’s greatest human concerns and local community challenges in an effective, responsible, and sustainable way,” he says. After joining the Dadeland-Pinecrest chapter, Ortega worked in both public relations and as newsletter editor as well as co-chair of a Polio immunization trip to India, in which 45 Rotarians from around the world participated, vaccinating hundreds of children against the deadly virus. “Shortly, thereafter, I became a founding member of the Rotary Club of Miami Metro Zoo (it re-chartered as Miami Kendall a few years later). I began my first year as Club President on July 1st of this year,” he says.
‘‘
TAKING ACTION “Rotary Clubs are the grassroots units of the international organization at the local level and typically identify and develop causes that are of interest to their members,” says Ortega. In his first quarter as president he plans to focus on literacy, education and leadership development by delivering children’s books for the “Read-to-Learn” program sponsored by Miami Dade College; supply volunteer-mentors to the reading program of the Arc of South Florida, which works to ensure the rights of all persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities through advocacy; and present a scholarship award honoring a WWII Tuskegee Airman to a student in aviation. “We also support the Many Happy Hearts organization, the Chapman Partnership and the Safe-Space Foundation by providing manpower, resources, and fundraising, as well as offering support and mentorship to the Interact Club at Felix Varela High School,” he says.
FUTURE PLANS Right now Ortega says they are working on an international project to install mosquito netting in rural communities in northwest Colombia to protect citizens from malaria and Zika. He’s also always looking to attract new members who have the same passion for service. “Rotary Clubs provide an immediate avenue to meet vibrant, interesting, and accomplished people who like to serve the community, who enjoy fellowship, and who want to do business with each other,” he says. “We provide the opportunity for business professionals and community leaders to speak to our group; we collaborate with other organizations; and we love to have fun.”
What makes Rotary special to me is that Rotary is an opportunity to satisfy one of the greatest human needs, the need to be healed, and one of the greatest human desires, the desire to be a healer. We can heal the effects of illness, thirst, poverty, illiteracy, abandon, abuse, and war. It is done at 34,000 weekly meetings, events, or projects, worldwide, by 1.2 million Rotarians of like-mind.”

Introducing Sharing Wear
FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE EXPECTING
BY TFV STAFF
W
HAT CAN I DO TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?” This is the question Palmetto Middle School eighth grader Nicole Markus asked herself when thinking about what community service project to focus on. Her solution? SharingWear.org – an online charity to link people to worthy causes throughout the United States and the world. The goal of SharingWear.org is to allow people to support worthwhile charities in an easy way – by buying high quality tshirts, sweatshirts, and other apparel featuring funny slogans and interesting images.
SharingWear.org’s premise is simple: each month, the site features a deserving charity as its Charity of the Month. That organization is profiled on the web site, with easy links for anyone who wants to make a direct donation, and the site features a custom t-shirt geared toward that organization or cause. All profits earned that month from the charity’s shirt, and the other general interest shirts on the website, are donated to the featured charity. SharingWear.org was founded by 13-year-old Nicole Markus, who has a special interest in helping the world. “SharingWear has the potential to help so many, and in so many different ways. Our goal is not only to raise money for worthy causes, but also to bring attention to important issues and the many ways in which caring people can help,” Nicole explains.’ Nicole’s vision is to feature organizations from all corners of the globe, and to diversify the type of causes that are supported. In its first month, SharingWear.com supported Fairy Tails Adoptions, which rescues animals in the Miami area and finds quality homes for them. “I learned first hand by volunteering at their adoption events that Fairy Tails does amazing work,” Nicole said. “Although SharingWear is a global organization, it was important to me to launch the site with a cause particularly close to my home and heart.” The second Charity of the Month, Ecuador Disaster Relief, raised money for orphans created by the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador in April 2016. The third Charity of the Month was Charley’s Fund, a national organization based in Massachusetts, which supports medical research to develop treatments and a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the #1 genetic killer of children worldwide. Since its inception in 2004, the foundation has sought to drive new therapies forward as quickly and efficiently as possible. Currently, the most popular shirts on the SharingWear are the “OhWhale” and the “Donut Worry” shirts. New shirts are regularly added to the site, and any of the slogans can be put on any shirt style. Says Nicole, “My goal is to do what I can to make a difference, in a fun way.” To learn more about SharingWear, to purchase an apparel item to support a worthwhile cause, or to submit your charitable organization for consideration as a Charity of the Month, please visit SharingWear.com. SharingWear.com also accepts non-copyrighted ideas or images for cute tshirts, and is happy to give credit to any artist Who submits a chosen design. SharingWear also has a requested shirt section, allowing teams or other groups to request a custom design for their organization or group.

What’s For Lunch?
Wondering what to expect this year? Here’s a preview of what’s to come from a few South Florida schools…
HOWARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY
Teaching students to follow-through can be hard if you lack focus on tasks. Knowing this, Howard Drive Elementary school’s theme for the new school year, “Ready! Set! Action!”, encourages students to study hard, prepare for their future and put knowledge into action. Working off of this theme, the school’s red-carpet “HDE Premier” social will take place on September 1st, the annual fall book fair will be September 26th to 30th, and HDE’s Fun Fair, the biggest fundraiser of the year, will take place on November 5th. “We look forward to the new year with all that PTA has in store and can’t wait to see our student’s achievements,” said Deanna Dalby, HDE Principal.
GULLIVER SCHOOLS
This year Gulliver will incorporate glass classrooms to its already thriving learning environment, where an unspoken message of openness and honesty will heighten productivity and encourage both students and teachers to be more transparent in their actions and more dedicated to their work. Studies have also shown that people feel more comfortable approaching and talking with others when they can see the person that they will be talking with. In this way, a glass classroom may take away barriers and allow students to feel less awkward about talking with a teacher after class if they are seeking assistance or guidance. Gulliver will also introduce block scheduling, an approach that has been used vastly in the public school system. Studies have shown that block scheduling gives students more time to reflect on daily activities. With less information to process over each course of a school day, they retain more information and can achieve a greater quality of learning. Teachers see fewer students during the day, giving them more time for individualized instruction. Longer class periods allow teachers more time to engage with students and cater to each student’s unique learning style. Additionally, with more time between class periods, teachers have more time for planning and can create more effective and organized schedules.
TEMPLE BETH AM
Temple Beth Am Day School has several enhancements and new programs for the 2016-2017 school year. The Elementary School will introduce a new P.E. Enrichment Program which emphasizes healthy body and mind. Some of the new units of study include: Pilates, Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, Mindfulness, and Nutrition. Experts in each field will be coming on campus to provide the instruction. The Elementary School is also offering a new studio art extended day (optional) class, which will focus on landscape painting and mural design, in addition to the already existing extended day classes: Robotics, Coding, Spanish and Television News Production. The School will begin a new series of Parent-Child classes called Toddling Around. These will be offered on Tuesday mornings; in addition to the Wednesday GrandKidding Around class for Grandparents and Children (more information at tbam.org/ dayschool).

PALMETTO MIDDLE SCHOOL
Palmetto Middle School is spending the summer updating and beautifying. The major donation from Western Union has allowed us to get rid of old, broken furniture and replace with new, beautiful furniture and decor. The only problem is that it’s heavy and a ton of work. Thankfully, Head Football Coach Mike Manasco and his Miami Palmetto Senior High Varsity football team have volunteered many hours to help us. His team has lifted, moved and carried thousands of pounds of furniture. “I really don’t think we could’ve gotten this done without coach Mike and his team. They have worked without complaint for hours on end. They worked quickly and happily. They are really great boys,” said Linda Dwyer, PTSA parent volunteer. Adds Coach Manasco, “As a football program, service to our community is a focal point in building our young men into leaders. Giving back builds pride and a sense of responsibility to the community.”

We want to prepare our 21st Century learners for the jobs they will perform that don’t yet exist,” says Principal Lynn Zaldua. The school also welcomes a new Assistant Principal in Maria Mayo, who joins PES from South Dade Senior High School. They’ve also updated their in-house TV studio (WPEN) with new equipment and a new look.

CHOOL LUNCHES OFTEN LEAVE MUCH TO BE DESIRED. Take the reigns on your kid’s’ lunch by choosing options guaranteed to excite even the pickiest eater. Lose the Juice. Focus on whole fruits instead. Water is best for kids’ hydration! Speaking of fruits...Be fruitful and multiply. Create a fruit salad with at least four different fruits on Sunday nights, store in an airtight container and scoop some every day for lunch. Chop watermelon, mango, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe for a base and add blueberries and raspberries as a topper. We like to sprinkle some cinnamon on top for an anti-inflammatory kick, and sometimes, we treat ourselves with raisins/nuts/goji berries as well for added texture. Kids will enjoy making fruit kebabs with skewers as well; they love being included. Make it gRAIN. Pre-cook whole grains like quinoa/teff/ brown rice/quinoa pasta/amaranth for the week and portion out as the week passes. Don’t forget to add all different types of beans and maybe even some squash for more nutrients and fiber. Sandwiches get boring very fast (or thrown around the lunchroom). Get saucy. Nobody likes a boring salad dressing (olive oil + vinegar…snooze) or sauce (canned tomato sauce… ew). Create your own sauces and dressings for the week using things like avocado oil, mustard, spices, worcestershire sauce, avocado, lemon, ginger, and poppy seeds. Portion into tiny tupperwares and send to school. Glean inspiration from Pinterest, a website that allows you to select your favorite recipes onto your own “boards.” Visit pinterest.com/feedyouressence for fan favorites like zucchini lasagna, beet burgers, sweet potato boats, and more. Make it cute; kids love quinoa butterflies (use a clothespin to separate a plastic baggie of cooked quinoa into “wings” and glue googly eyes onto the clothespin); try “ants on a log” - celery stuffed with natural almond butter, cinnamon, and raisins; make “ladybugs” out of strawberries and grapes; create fruit “donuts” by coring/slicing apples and spreading with Greek yogurt topped with honey, berries, and dark chocolate cacao nibs. The Pinterest world is endless. Can it. Canned fish is great source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and minerals for kids. In fact, canned salmon is one of the greatest sources of Vitamin D around. Use mashed avocado or plain Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise to turn canned fish (or hard-boiled eggs) into a glorious salad spread that kids can use for dipping fresh veggies into. Call in the calcium. Kids need a lot of calcium to build strong bones; pack snacks like unsweetened, unflavored yogurts with fresh fruit, organic string cheeses, kefir, and cottage cheese.

SOS: Save Your Spine
A
S THE SCHOOL YEAR KICKS OFF THERE’S MORE TO WORRY ABOUT THAN just spelling tests and SAT prep. Lugging books and hunching over a computer for hours on end can do irreparable damage to our spines. So what to do? Awareness is key, says Florida Occupational Healthcare’s Alex Pereda, DPT, MTC. First, look for a rolling backpack as opposed to shoulder harness. (The only exception would be a bag under five pounds for children under 12.) “If a shoulder harness backpack is too heavy this not only loads the spine, but also causes back extension which can lead to severe muscular low back tightness and premature arthritic changes in the facet joints located in the lumbar spine,” says Pereda. When it comes to homework time it’s also important to keep an eye on posture… and it may not be the posture you imagine. “Although most of us have been brought up with the mentality of ‘good’ posture (erect posture), for both sitting and standing, multiple studies have suggested that when sitting for more than 20 minutes it is important to sit in a slouched posture (similar to astronauts sitting position during shuttle takeoff),” says Pereda. Sitting in this position, he explains, significantly decreases the compressive forces acting on the spine and positions the muscles in a semi stretched positions therefore avoiding premature arthritic changes in the facet joints located in the lumbar spine and adaptive forces shortening of the muscles collectively. Regardless, sitting for more than 20 minutes in any position can be damaging, so Pereda advises setting a timer to take 10-minute breaks. Another option is to look into hydraulic computer stations that can be adjusted to fit a standing position, but even then it’s important to keep posture at top of mind. “I would recommend that one leg be put on a stool and the other on the floor to unload the spine and to further decrease any incidents of chronic postural injury,” says Pereda.

FE AT U R E
Spirit of the Law BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
OR MOST PEOPLE, FINDING SUCCESS AFTER building a business from the ground up would be the end of the story. For Omaida Delgado, it was just the first chapter. Delgado, a New Jersey native who relocated to Florida at 12, spent much of her post-collegiate life building Cargo Services Express, Inc. a local freight carrier. But the long hours and hustle and bustle of the freight industry left her looking for something more. So she turned the day-to-day operations over to husband and took a leap. She applied to law school. “Becoming a lawyer had been something that I had wanted to do from a young age, but life had taken me in a different direction,” says Delgado. “I wanted to study law since I was a teen. I loved the idea of fighting for our rights and I love that I can now help people in that struggle.” Today, the Nova Southeastern University Law School graduate runs her own namesake firm alongside associate Angela Bousalis. Though the firm handles “a little bit of everything,” they do place focus on landlord-tenant, real estate, personal injury and family law, specialities that grew out of Delgado’s exploration of various aspects of law. “As I took on a variety of cases, I realized that there were some areas of law that I enjoyed more than others,” says Delgado, who explains that her experience within a larger firm propelled her to find what she was passionate about. “After about a year there, I realized that I wasn't happy practicing just one specific portion of the law. I wanted to learn about as many different

areas of the law as possible, gain experience litigating, work and interact with clients who were real people, and take whatever cases interested me.” Of course, Delgado’s natural inclination toward entrepreneurship also informed her decision to step out on her own. “At eighteen years old, I was already managing businesses for others. At twenty-two, I decided to start my own trucking company. It was only natural that I would eventually begin my own firm,” she says. Gaining control of her own legal career gave Delgado (and Bousalis, who joined the firm in 2014) the ability to build a firm that catered to clients on their own terms. That means putting a personal touch on every case and not “nickel and diming” clients for a quick call or update. “I try to treat my clients the same way I would want a lawyer I hired to treat me,” says Bousalis. “I always think, ‘Would I hire me?’ when I am interacting with clients.” Both women also stress that communication and availability top their list when it comes to ensuring clients that they are in good hands. “I am very accessible to my clients,” adds Delgado. “It doesn't matter what day or time. Because I enjoy working, I don't mind being interrupted on my personal time.” Within the firm, the attorneys have found their own niches, with Delgado handing real estate and personal injury (“…it gives me a chance to put my negotiating skills to good use,” she says) and Bousalis working on the family law side (“I like the intricacies of family law and how each case is different.”). But they both adhere to the same end game: helping clients attain their goals.
“My first question to all new clients is ‘What are your goals and what do you hope to accomplish with the case,’” says Delgado. “I am here to serve them within the bounds of the law; to be understanding and open and encourage them to do the same. We give our clients honest and frank opinions and expect the same honesty back.” Their commitment to their clients is echoed in Delgado and Bousalis’ commitment to their community. “I have strong ties to the Cuban community and I donate time and money to families in need,” says Delgado. “My parents fled Cuba to get their freedom and I am so grateful they ended up in the greatest country of all.” In fact, she credits a trip to Cuba as a young girl for sparking her desire to become an attorney, noting that the experience left a lasting impression when it came to basic rights. Says Delgado, “I will always appreciate the freedom we have in the U.S. to speak how we want, about what we want. The experience of that visit was one impetus in becoming an attorney, the ability to speak for others when they can't speak for themselves.” The Law Office of Omaida Delgado, P.A. practices in the areas of Real Estate Closings, Refinance title work, Foreclosure and Modifications, Landlord Tenant Issues, Criminal Defense, Family Law, and Traffic Citations. The Law Office of Omaida Delgado, P.A. is a general practice firm based in Doral, FL that represents corporate and individual clients in transactional and litigation matters thoughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties. What is Hospice?
H
OSPICE IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF MEDICAL CARE AND SUPport for people nearing the end of life. The hospice philosophy is based on the ideas that no one should die alone or in pain; life-limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress as well as physical pain, all of which deserve quality professional attention and compassionate care; and a serious illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice provides pain management and appropriate palliative care, care that focuses on the patient’s comfort, when curative medical treatments no longer enhance quality of life. Hospice strives to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and provides support for the entire family during the illness and for at least one year after a patient’s death. Most hospice care is provided at home, where most people want to be when they are ill. Hospice care can also be provided in a nursing or residential facility and in certain circumstances, in a hospital or hospice management residence. Hospice also provides medications, medical equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort at home or in other hospice settings. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. The focus shifts toward helping the patient achieve the Dr Ismael Roque-Velasco President and Chief Executive Officer maximum quality of life by attend- Hospice Care of South Florida ing to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
“A Helping Hand When You Need It the Most”
Hospice Care allows end-of-life patients the opportunity to live pain-free with the following services:
Routine Home Care Continuous Care at Home General Inpatient Care Respite Care
Hospice Care vs. Standard Medical Care Some differences between hospice care and medical care are: »» Hospice looks at all of the patient’s and their family’s needs. A coordinated team of hospice professionals, assisted by volunteers, work together to meet the patient’s and family’s emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the patient’s physical needs. »» An emphasis is put on controlling pain and symptoms through the most advanced techniques available as well as on emotional and spiritual support tailored to the needs of the patient and their family. »» Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects not only the person who is ill, but the entire family as well. The family and patient are the “unit of care” for hospice professionals. At times, other family members may actually need more attention than the patient.
To learn more call (305) 591-1606 and speak to one of our representatives for more information on how Hospice Care of South Florida can help you and your loved ones in your time of need.

S HEALTHY EATING HABITS BEGIN AS EARLY AS INFANCY, it is vital to begin your child’s journey through a nutritious lifestyle as early as possible, especially during the back-to-school season. Designed to accommodate my most precious clients (babies, toddlers, children, and adolescents) the Essence Nutrition Baby Butterflies plan focuses on promoting growth and development within an ideal nutrition framework. Children and adolescents require a lot more calories per pound of body weight than we do to accommodate growth and development. These calories should be from high-quality, nutrient-dense foods and not from processed, junk foods with little or no nutritive value.
Essence Nutrition’s Tips for Kids: »» Always eat WITH your child. He/she needs to see that their caregiver is eating as well. »» Make food fun! Try making cauliflower/broccoli poodles, mango sushi, fruit kebabs, sweet potato boats -- the fun is endless! »» Never ever encourage a child to clean his/ her plate. This creates an unhealthy relationship with food. »» Allow your child to eat when he/she is hungry and stop when he/she is full. »» Do not reward/punish your child with foods. If your child does not want to eat a specific food, do not force him/her. Children will not starve themselves. Eventually he/she will want to eat. »» Of course your child does not like vegetables. They aren’t tasty naturally! Hide them into soups and casseroles, top them with organic cheese or creative, flavorful sauces. »» In order to prevent endless night time snacking, state that “the kitchen is closed” after a certain hour of your choosing, and all food requests must be finished by then. »» Do not allow eating in bed or in front of the computer. »» Only stock your kitchen and pantry with healthful foods and snacks. »» Always offer a choice to children; they like to feel that they have freedom. However, both choices will be healthy options, so in the end - YOU are in control. »» If your child is dessert-obsessed, serve a small portion of a dessert WITH a meal, not afterward »» Sit down and eat as a family at structured time, do not allow unstructured grazing the taking food in the kitchen »» Make food fun! Create happy faces, cartoon characters, and animals with the vegetables when you serve them. See

our Pinterest site for ideas! »» Serve vegetables as pureed “dips” but call them “swimming pools” designated by their favorite cartoon character, e.g., Elsa’s Snowpile for a Greek yogurt-based dip Do not provide sports drinks, as water is perfectly fine for hydration. Try to make most (over half) of your child’s grains whole grains (whole wheat, rye, spelt, pumpernickel, quinoa, buckwheat, teff, barley, brown rice, amaranth, sorghum) Limit juice and soda. If your child wants juice, be sure to dilute it to half strength (½ cup juice + ½ cup water) and use 100 percent juice (it will say so on the label) and limit to ½ cup diluted juice/day. Soda can be a “treat” at birthday parties, holidays, vacations, etc. and limit to 8 ounces. Children should avoid eating fish that may be high in mercury, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. Always cook in avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, or coconut oil Do not fry foods. If you choose to “bread” foods, try “breading” with quinoa or other types of whole grains. Stay away from artificial sweeteners Choose fresh/frozen fruits as snacks instead of granola bars/cereal bars/cookies Get smart about reading labels to avoid added sugars. Provide plenty of fresh produce as snacks. Do not stock your pantry with sugary cereals or processed foods/junk foods. Encourage protein-rich breakfasts including eggs, plain oatmeal, and raw nuts. Snacks are very important. There should be three snacks/day, between meals. Pack your child’s snacks to always include protein, fat, and complex carbohydrate.

RANGE BLOSSOM LEARNING CENTER CAN TRULY SAY IT WAS BORNE of friendship. Co-owners Raheel Baksh and Claudia Orrett were friends and colleagues for many years before they decided to combine their 35 years of experience in education into a new endeavor. “Opening up a school was something that was always dear to my heart,” says Baksh “We decided to open the school together because we shared the same philosophies. We’re on the same page.” For Orrett, the owner of Cherry Blossom Learning Centers (Orange Blossom’s sister school), expansion to South Miami this past April was a natural extension, bringing the same dedication and early childhood ideologies to a new set of families. “We want to ensure that the children develop the early childhood basics. To respect others, gain independence… that they are happy kids who are loving and kind,” says Baksh. The school, which serves children from infants to preschoolers, provides children with a nurturing environment, while incorporating a well-rounded curriculum which includes phonics, language development, science, computer usage, physical education, and ample extra curricular activities such as music, drama, yoga, ceramics and much more. In fact, Baksh says each school caters to the surrounding neighborhood when it comes to what they offer outside of traditional learning. “In Midtown we had a lot of French students so we began offering French, in South Miami we’re going to be doing yoga with the kids,” she says. Also important to both owners is imparting a sense of warmth and family to the small school. With a capacity of just 75 students, Baksh says they go above and beyond to keep parents in the loop and work with them to support the children. That means breakfast, lunch and snack provided (and reviewed and approved by a nutritionist), uniforms and a dedicated app that allows parents to check in on their children via webcam. Orange Blossom has also already begun forming partnerships with community organizations. Thanks to a partnership with FIU’s NeighborhoodHELP, the school recently hosted a “smoothie day,” focused on healthy eating. Another workshop based around “body balance” is in the works, as are partnerships with Baptist Health and others. As for in-school staff, Baksh says she has benefitted from their sister school’s teachers, who are already familiar with the Orange Blossom/Cherry Blossom environment and stresses that she observes all potential teachers to make sure their educational philosophies match up. “You can have a teacher withal the very best credentials, but they may not fit into your community.” For now, the school is focused on building enrollment and is currently offering a drop-in program by either the week or the day, but is looking toward a bustling campus of full-day students come fall. Says Baksh, “We want to inspire a love of learning.” Orange Blossom Learning Center is located at 6710 SW 80th St. in South Miami (behind Big Cheese). For more information please call 305.398.9888 or visit orangeblossomlearningcenter.com.

ESTAT E PL A N N I N G
What Does Back to School Have to do with Estate Planning? BY LESLIE V. MARENCO, ESQ.
A
S SUMMER COMES TO AN end and kids and parents both start getting ready for back-to-school week, estate planning may be the last thing on anybody’s mind; but the beginning of a new school year can actually be the perfect time to give your estate planner a call. Whether your baby is heading off to preschool or college, our office can help you plan for the future and ensure he or she is protected as the school year unwinds. Any parent of an elementary, middle, or high school student knows that the first thing sent home during back-to-school week is the emergency contact forms. These are the forms on which you list who the school should call in case of an emergency when parents can’t be reached. The names you put on these forms can be a perfect starting point for considering who you (and your children) love and trust enough to serve as guardians of your minor children should anything happen to you. Choosing Emergency Temporary Guardians and Permeant Guardians for your minor children is of utmost importance but have you thought about your kids in college? Parents of college-age students (currently or soon to be 18) have a whole different set of legal issues to consider. Although you may still think of your 18 year as your baby, he or she is looked upon as an adult under the law. This means that hospitals and medical personnel are no longer required to inform parents or ask their permission before performing medical procedures. In fact, once your child is 18 health care providers are no longer allowed to share information with the parents at all. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) sets out rules and limits on who can look at and receive an individual’s medical information. This document authorizes healthcare providers to disclose a student’s medical information only to certain named individuals. In the unfortunate scenario where a student experiences a medical emergency, this document would give parents the authority to receive information regarding the student’s healthcare status and related information. Of critical importance to parents is a legal document called an Advanced Directive for Healthcare will allow a student to name them as an agent to make healthcare decisions for him or her in the event he or she is unable to do so. In addition, the Power of Attorney for a student is also important, especially if financial help is still
being provided to the student, which is often the case when children are in college. This document allows a student to name an attorney in fact to act on his or her behalf regarding financial and legal matters. For example, as attorney in fact, a parent could pay bills, maintain bank accounts, and take care of other financial matters for their child if the need arose. In Florida, the document becomes effective immediately so a parent could seamlessly act for their child, if necessary, without having to go through a determination of incapacity, which includes the added burden of obtaining court orders. These documents are critical - the fact is that a quarter-million young adults (ages of 18-25) are hospitalized in America with non-lethal injuries every year. With these documents in place, parents can be there for their children without needing a court to intervene. Back-to-school is an exciting time for both parents and children. Taking care of legal and estate-planning business at this time can lift a heavy burden, leaving you all free to enjoy the new school year with a little less to worry about and this is why I want to invite

Easy Tips To Prevent Pet Summer Emergencies
South Flor ilitating ida Pe b a h e ts R for Over 10 Years
T
I. Heatstroke A heatstroke develops when core body temperatures rises and stays above a certain temperature. In dogs and cats, this threshold temperature is 106 degrees, at which they can start convulsing (their normal core temperature is 100-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit). Dogs and cats are more prone to heat strokes than humans since they lack sweat glands over most of their body surface, affecting their ability to sweat and cool their bodies. Pets with flats noses such as Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats, are more prone to heat strokes even in slightly warm temperatures, since their nasal structures are not efficient enough for cooling the body effectively. Black-colored animals absorb and maintain the heat in their bodies more readily, making them more susceptible to a heatstroke. Small pets such as rabbits and ferrets typically live in cooler temperatures and have more difficulty handling the summer heat of South Florida. Luckily, heat strokes can be prevented following simple steps: Check the weather report daily so you can plan how to keep your pet safe while you are at work. Never leave your pets outside unsupervised, even if shade and cool water are provided. Never leave a pet in a enclosed balcony that receives direct sunlight during the day, leaving no place for the pet to escape the heat. Lastly, never leave a pet in a park car, even if the car is in the shade with the windows open. Leaving a pet in a parked car can develop into a life threatening condition in as fast as fiveto-ten minutes. In Florida this is such a common occurrence that the law allows individuals to break into a strangers car if an animal is in obvious respiratory distress inside the locked car, the owner is not close by, and a 911 call has already been placed. If you find your pet walking drunk-like, slow, confused, with extremely red gums and excessive panting, he or she might be suffering from a heatstroke. Rapidly transfer the pet to a cooler ventilated area, apply wet towels (not ice) to the neck, inguinal and axillary areas (where the blood vessels are closer to the skin), and call the closest emergency veterinary clinic to notify them that an animal with a heatstroke is on the way.

HE MOST DANGEROUS MONTH OF THE YEAR FOR PETS in South Florida is August. As temperatures and humidity rise, our pets are especially prone to life-threatening heat induced conditions. II. Solar Dermatitis and Skin Burns Just like we can get dangerous sunburns, our pets are prone to solar dermatitis and burns if exposed too long to the sun’s powerful rays. White coated animals will suffer the worst burns since they lack enough skin pigment to protect their skin. Likewise, animals with short fur have less protection of the skin, especially on hairless areas such as the nose, ear flaps, and belly. The most dangerous consequence of sun burns is skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma. This is a highly aggressive skin cancer that is too common in pets, and is totally preventable. Treatment requires surgery and in many cases, further therapies such as radiation or chemotherapy are also required. To prevent sun burns keep your pet inside or in complete shade when the sun rays are strongest, from 10:00 am TO 3:00 pm. For those light coated pets that enjoy laying in the sun for a few minutes daily, there are now elegant sun proof hats and apparel for pets, that are stretchy and comfortable to wear (see photo).

CASTAWAYS LAUNCH KAYAK JOURNEY
The Castaways Against Cancer, a Relay for Life team ranked #1 in Florida, launched their 17h Annual kayaking journey dubbed the “Proof of Life” tour from Virginia Key in Miami, FL on Saturday, June 11. Paddling the equivalent of a marathon a day, the Castaways paddled a total of 160 miles to raise funds in support of the American Cancer Society (ASC). They made landfall at Higgs Beach in Key West on Friday, June 17. Steve O’Brien, a Columbus alumnus and teacher, founded Castaways Against Cancer in 1999, having lost several family members to cancer and himself a cancer survivor. When O’Brien was introduced to fellow Christopher Columbus alumnus Lou de la Aguilera, president and CEO of U.S. Century Bank, a deep friendship was formed. Yoel Gutierrez of Mosquito Joe BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
W
HEN YOEL GUTIERREZ LEFT A CAREER IN THE IT WORLD TO START A business with longtime friend Omar Sanchez he had no idea his mother would be the key to his success. “I went to visit her in Georgia and her neighbor had purchased a Mosquito Joe franchise,” he says. “I started looking at the business and it was something that always bothered us — my wife gets bitten all the time.” Now, almost two years later, Gutierrez and Sanchez operate in territories that run from north Palmetto Bay all the way to South beach, North Miami Beach, Aventura and Miami Lakes, keeping families happy and safe from the insects that rule our daily lives in South Florida. We sat down with Gutierrez to talk business, safety and, of course, mosquitoes.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE BUSINESS. People know that there’s pest control, but not as much about mosquito control. Now, all the pest control companies are trying to get into mosquito control, but that’s the only thing we do, that’s what Yoel Gutierrez, left, w/ co-owner, Omar Sanchez. we focus on. Omar and I employ a team of experienced technicians dedicated to making outdoor spaces for residential and commercial properties mosquito-free. All our technicians are licensed and trained in mosquito control treatment applications and are a great resource for specific concerns you have about your yard. We’re trying to relieve the stress of going outside for families and children.

Easy Tips To Prevent Pet Summer Emergencies Apply sunscreen for babies (SPF 15 or above) on the hairless areas, mainly on top of the nose and ear flaps. Avoid any sunscreen that contains zinc, since it can be toxic if your pet licks it off.
III. Trauma to Toe Pads Perhaps the most common heat related problem that veterinarians see during the hot season is burning of the paws. Going for walks on hot pavement, pavers, sand, or other ground material that stores heat will cause burning, bleeding and sloughing off of the foot pads. This is an extremely painful condition, and many times the main symptom that is seen is limping and/or licking of the paws. It is a treatable condition, though it takes several weeks to heal completely. To keep your dog’s paws safe, go for walks on cool grounds such as grass. Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, and consider using dog shoes or boots to protect the paws. Special care should be taken in choosing the proper fit to avoid turning and twisting of the shoe. Look for light and comfortable materials, so your dog will be more likely to accept the shoes. Summer time is an enjoyable season of boat rides, beach, and outdoor fun in South Florida for all, including our pets. Proper care should be taken to avoid an emergency that potentially could be fatal. Have fun with your pets and keep them safe! WHAT’S THE PROCESS FOR BEGINNING (AND MAINTAINING) TREATMENT? We are a non-contractual company, unlike traditional pest control companies. You can start and finish your service whenever you wish, although we suggest to continue the service year round so the mosquito population does not have a chance to regain its numbers. We service your property every 3 weeks to keep your barrier at 100% efficacy. If a homeowner leaves on an extended vacation we can also put their account on hold. We also provide one-time special event sprays. Mosquito Joe has sprayed for events such as weddings, birthday parties and corporate events. We have serviced venues and locations such as Tropical Park, Shops at Sunset Place and Wayside Market, just to name a few.
IS THE SPRAY SAFE FOR KIDS AND PETS? All of our products are pet and child safe. They only affect insects. All we ask is that any animals and children be out of the way while we spray and then stay out of the area 30 minutes or so after the treatment so that it can dry.
WHAT CAN WE DO AS HOMEOWNERS TO HELP KEEP OUR YARDS FREE OF MOSQUITOS? The biggest issue is that the primary mosquito we have here in South Florida (Aedes Aegypti) is a container breeder. Anything that holds up to a tablespoon of water… they can breed in. We’ll treat a yard and then it will inevitably rain and new water will collect in toys or planters and create a breeding ground. So, the best thing you can do is to regularly check for standing water. Pots, toys, gutters etc… make sure they are all draining and clean. Make sure to look at your gutter drains, every one of those little ridges holds water in the bottom and no one ever tips them over. Those are always full of mosquito larvae.
ANY OTHER TIPS? Of course, wear long sleeved, light-colored clothing as well as repellent. And try to pay attention to everything in your yard, even plants. Bromeliads hold tons of water. Once a day hose them down so that you’re replacing that standing water with fresh water!

Weight Loss: The Big Picture BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI

there are still solutions. Weight loss is like a puzzle. There are many different ways to begin a puzzle and to put a puzzle together. Every person, no matter how similar, may complete it differently and effectively reach the same end goal. While weight loss (and puzzles) can be difficult, neither is unattainable, though the method of approach can vary from person to person. Due to variables such as age, muscular component, ethnicity, gender, and many more, there is no cookie cutter approach of dieting that works for every single person. Sure, cutting out carbs and fats might generally work for many people to lose weight quickly, but maintenance for a diet like that will not come easily for most. While some may require surgical assistance, others may simply need a structured diet. The first and most important step in finding out which path is suitable for you and your future is to see a certified expert. This accredited and trusted expert will help you start putting the pieces of your weight loss puzzle together by giving you a strategic plan, coaching you through the frustrating and difficult times, providing advice and guidance, and ultimately supporting you every step of your journey so they can cheer you on as the last piece of your puzzle comes together. EIGHT LOSS IS AN EXTREMELY BROAD SUBJECT. Almost everyone is trying to lose weight or keep it off. Americans, and the rest of the world, spend billions of dollars trying to gain control of their weight, unsuccessfully! “Why?” you ask. The answer is this: there are so many factors that can affect how the human body consumes food and stores energy-- the combinations are unfathomable. The sheer amount of time, money, and energy spent on diets, medications, and surgeries without a true answer leaves many thinking that nothing works. But the truth isn’t that nothing works, it’s that not one single thing works for every single person. The key to successful weight control is to identify what causes your weight gain and retention, and to take the necessary steps to get your body, and your life, under control. Weight gain can be caused by a multitude of factors. For some people, a hormonal imbalance brought on by unhealthy eating habits is the cause of weight gain/retention. This imbalance can escalate to the body’s lack of sensitivity to important digesting hormones, such as insulin, which in turn can result in a multitude of complications, such as excess storage of fat or diabetes. For other people, weight gain/retention can be a hereditary challenge in which their body and their brain are not on the same page. And still for others, the challenge lies in not being motivated or supported by others to maintain or lose weight. Given this information, we begin to understand the multitude of factors that can combine in many ways, resulting in a unique weight loss challenge for each individual. While there isn’t an absolute truth or universal rule-of-thumb to weight loss,
