A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

T’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT AUGUST IS HERE, AND SCHOOL WILL BE STARTING at the end of the month. Summer has gone by too quickly! Everywhere you look, stores are stocking back-to-school clothes and supplies. Before the structured routines of carpool and after-school activities begin again, we hope everyone is able to relax and enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Don’t miss the special Back-ToSchool section of this month’s magazine, where you’ll find updates on exciting plans for the 2016-2017 school year from local schools as well as helpful tips on everything from backpacks to school lunches (page 30). Elsewhere in the magazine be sure to check out our “5 Questions” column with Mosquito Joe’s Yoel Gutierrez (page 46). The insects are always a hot topic among our communities, but this year the Zika concern has brought it even more to the forefront. Gutierrez offers advice (and service) for those whose yards have become off-limits. Additionally, we’re thrilled to profile Luis Ortega as our August Philanthropist (page 16). His contributions to the South Florida community (and the nation) are truly admirable and, under his leadership, the Rotary Club of MiamiKendall is sure to thrive. As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 8, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town. And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find an online version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,

Our Mayor, Eugene Flinn, and the Palmetto Bay Council unanimously voted to proclaim the Village of Palmetto Bay the FIRST Purple Heart City in Miami Dade County. Thanks to our Patriot Council for honoring our Combat Wounded Warriors! Hopefully, many other Cities will follow the leadership shown by Mayor Flinn. We are proud that a Purple Heart flag flies right under “Old Glory” at City Hall. The Legion also commends the Village Manager Ed Silva and staff for putting on a great Independence Day bash… 20 minutes of top quality fireworks, great food, rides and music! We enjoyed it and are proud of the quality of professionalism shown by all, especially our Palmetto Bay Finest under command of Major Serralta. The Legion will hold a Special Ceremony on Purple Heart Day, Sunday, August 7, to raise the Purple Heart Flag over the Legion Headquarters at 16401 SW 90 Avenue (behind BMW South Motors) at 11:00am. All Patriotic Citizens are invited to attend. The Legion, in honor of Staff Sergeant Marlin Moore, invites you to enjoy a free lunch in the Post after the ceremony, catered by our new House Manager, Lisa. Lisa will put on a great spread along with Chris, our House Committee Chairman (Marine), and Commander “Billy” Richards (Infantry) will be there to welcome guests along with Mayor Flinn and Council Members. We look forward to seeing you, so save the date! If you bring the kids, I might even tell a war story for them! And remember, you don’t have to wear a uniform to be a Patriot!

Luis Ortega BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
Rotary International; Rotary Club of Miami-Kendall
BACKGROUND Ascending to the role of President of Rotary Club of Miami-Kendall was a natural progression for Ortega, who has spent much of his life working in philanthropic roles. From a high school Key Club member to volunteering with Gainesville Pet Rescue in college, Ortega found a calling in volunteerism. But it was his time in the Marines that solidified his dedication. “My first exposure to largescale h umanitarianism occurred during a deployment to East Timor when,as a US Marine officer, I participated in a U N-led Humanitarian Assistance Operation,” he says. “ We provided dental, medical, engineering, and security services to the nascent community. I was struck by the application of strength to e ffect compassion.” Back in Miami, the nowowner of Security Arms International began trips downtown to feed the homeless population. “On all occasions, I witnessed the power of few applied for the benefit of many, and an interest was born.”
ABOUT ROTARY INTERNATIONAL In July 2007, Ortega stopped by a Rotary table at an outdoor fair and began reading about the organization. He was instantly intrigued. “I describe Rotary International as a worldwide, historically successful organization of inspired business and professional leaders who are passionate about pooling resources, sharing best practices, and taking action to tackle the world’s greatest human concerns and local community challenges in an effective, responsible, and sustainable way,” he says. After joining the Dadeland-Pinecrest chapter, Ortega worked in both public relations and as newsletter editor as well as co-chair of a Polio immunization trip to India, in which 45 Rotarians from around the world participated, vaccinating hundreds of children against the deadly virus. “Shortly, thereafter, I became a founding member of the Rotary Club of Miami Metro Zoo (it re-chartered as Miami Kendall a few years later). I began my first year as Club President on July 1st of this year,” he says.
‘‘
TAKING ACTION “Rotary Clubs are the grassroots units of the international organization at the local level and typically identify and develop causes that are of interest to their members,” says Ortega. In his first quarter as president he plans to focus on literacy, education and leadership development by delivering children’s books for the “Read-to-Learn” program sponsored by Miami Dade College; supply volunteer-mentors to the reading program of the Arc of South Florida, which works to ensure the rights of all persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities through advocacy; and present a scholarship award honoring a WWII Tuskegee Airman to a student in aviation. “We also support the Many Happy Hearts organization, the Chapman Partnership and the Safe-Space Foundation by providing manpower, resources, and fundraising, as well as offering support and mentorship to the Interact Club at Felix Varela High School,” he says.
FUTURE PLANS Right now Ortega says they are working on an international project to install mosquito netting in rural communities in northwest Colombia to protect citizens from malaria and Zika. He’s also always looking to attract new members who have the same passion for service. “Rotary Clubs provide an immediate avenue to meet vibrant, interesting, and accomplished people who like to serve the community, who enjoy fellowship, and who want to do business with each other,” he says. “We provide the opportunity for business professionals and community leaders to speak to our group; we collaborate with other organizations; and we love to have fun.”
What makes Rotary special to me is that Rotary is an opportunity to satisfy one of the greatest human needs, the need to be healed, and one of the greatest human desires, the desire to be a healer. We can heal the effects of illness, thirst, poverty, illiteracy, abandon, abuse, and war. It is done at 34,000 weekly meetings, events, or projects, worldwide, by 1.2 million Rotarians of like-mind.”

Killian Scholarship Honors Beloved Teacher BY MISTY BUCK
A
LL TEACHERS ARE SPECIAL, BUT THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE SIMPLY spectacular. Mrs. Lorraine Silverstein, who served as a law studies teacher at Miami Killian Senior High, was one of those remarkable educators. Silverstein taught at Killian for 17 years where she also prepared students for local and state Mock Trial and We the People competitions. After years of tireless dedication, including never missing a day of school, she retired and moved to be with her family in Maryland where she passed away in March. “Mrs. Silverstein pushed me to be the best student, thinker, and advocate I could be. The experience of having her as a men- Mitch Panter, Kelly Green, Lorraine Silverstein and Jordan Panter tor has stayed with me ever since,” said Brandon Zamudio, who studied with Silverstein during his four years at Killian. “She consistently reminded us that this experience was about finding our voice, generating self-confidence, and becoming part of a team—something greater than our individual selves.” In honor of her memory the high school introduced a new annual scholarship this month calling it the “Lorraine Silverstein Law Related Scholarship Sponsored By Panter, Panter & Sampedro.” The award honors her contribution to the law program and advancement of many students over her longstanding career at Killian. “It’s not very often that you come across such an impactful mentor. Mrs. Silverstein was my son, Jordan’s teacher. I clearly remember Pedro Zerpa and Mitch Panter him boasting about her commitment and passion,” recalls Mitch Panter, managing partner of Panter, Panter & Sampedro. “I got to experience it firsthand when I served as an advisor for Jordan and his classmates in helping them prepare for a local Mock Trial competition. It’s amazing when a teacher influences your kid in such a positive manner. She truly helped shape his future.” The $1,000 award, sponsored by Panter, Panter & Sampedro, P.A., was presented to Pedro Zerpa, a senior at Killian, in a ceremony at the school on Wednesday, May 25. “Mrs. Silverstein had an unwavering dedication to her students and the program,” said Jordan Panter. “For example, during the We the People season, she came every in morning with news articles relating to each team and did her best to encourage all of her students to make the most of their abilities. Her passion inspired everyone.” Although this year’s scholarship recipient did not study with Silverstein, he is proud to be among the many students who will continue to flourish because of her incredible legacy. Zerpa was chosen to receive the scholarship in part because of his wholehearted involvement in the school’s law program, which mirrored what Silverstein exemplified. “It is an absolute honor to be granted a scholarship that promotes education of law and the strive for excellence itself. The existence of the scholarship echoes Mrs. Silverstein’s passion for law, granting the ability for her to continue to touch the lives of many individuals,” said Zerpa. “Mrs. Silverstein’s inspiration will continue to reach people through her students, friends, family, acquaintances, and future award winners through the medium of education.” Zerpa’s impressive list of accolades includes his participation and dedication to student lawyer activities at Killian. He participated in We the People last year as a dedicated student who was passionate about the class’s success. Over the course of this school year, he volunteered to provide support and mentoring to this year’s students. “After meeting Pedro, I have no doubt that he will go on to honor her legacy and represent Killian well in his future achievements,” said M. Panter.

Introducing Sharing Wear
FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE EXPECTING
BY TFV STAFF
W
HAT CAN I DO TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?” This is the question Palmetto Middle School eighth grader Nicole Markus asked herself when thinking about what community service project to focus on. Her solution? SharingWear.org – an online charity to link people to worthy causes throughout the United States and the world. The goal of SharingWear.org is to allow people to support worthwhile charities in an easy way – by buying high quality tshirts, sweatshirts, and other apparel featuring funny slogans and interesting images.
SharingWear.org’s premise is simple: each month, the site features a deserving charity as its Charity of the Month. That organization is profiled on the web site, with easy links for anyone who wants to make a direct donation, and the site features a custom t-shirt geared toward that organization or cause. All profits earned that month from the charity’s shirt, and the other general interest shirts on the website, are donated to the featured charity. SharingWear.org was founded by 13-year-old Nicole Markus, who has a special interest in helping the world. “SharingWear has the potential to help so many, and in so many different ways. Our goal is not only to raise money for worthy causes, but also to bring attention to important issues and the many ways in which caring people can help,” Nicole explains.’ Nicole’s vision is to feature organizations from all corners of the globe, and to diversify the type of causes that are supported. In its first month, SharingWear.com supported Fairy Tails Adoptions, which rescues animals in the Miami area and finds quality homes for them. “I learned first hand by volunteering at their adoption events that Fairy Tails does amazing work,” Nicole said. “Although SharingWear is a global organization, it was important to me to launch the site with a cause particularly close to my home and heart.” The second Charity of the Month, Ecuador Disaster Relief, raised money for orphans created by the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Ecuador in April 2016. The third Charity of the Month was Charley’s Fund, a national organization based in Massachusetts, which supports medical research to develop treatments and a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the #1 genetic killer of children worldwide. Since its inception in 2004, the foundation has sought to drive new therapies forward as quickly and efficiently as possible. Currently, the most popular shirts on the SharingWear are the “OhWhale” and the “Donut Worry” shirts. New shirts are regularly added to the site, and any of the slogans can be put on any shirt style. Says Nicole, “My goal is to do what I can to make a difference, in a fun way.” To learn more about SharingWear, to purchase an apparel item to support a worthwhile cause, or to submit your charitable organization for consideration as a Charity of the Month, please visit SharingWear.com. SharingWear.com also accepts non-copyrighted ideas or images for cute tshirts, and is happy to give credit to any artist Who submits a chosen design. SharingWear also has a requested shirt section, allowing teams or other groups to request a custom design for their organization or group.

What’s Happening in Our Communities? CINDY LERNER MAYOR OF PINECREST
Palmetto Expy
T
HE PINECREST YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL (YAC) PROvides our middle and high school students with hands on civics lessons and involvement in their own municipality and in collaboration with neighboring municipalities. What is unique about the Pinecrest YAC is that it provides our youth council members with direct access to the Mayor, who attends most of the meetings throughout the year, sharing updates on local issues the Council is addressing, and encourages leadership by the members. A special focus is on sustainability, and climate change through collaboration with The CLEO Institute. Local government becomes real and personal, by learning directly from the Police Chief, and the Directors of public works, parks and recreation, the manager’s office, building, planning and zoning and Pinecrest Gardens. They demonstrate leadership development through Team participation in the local Relay for Life, in fund raising for an important charity. A strong bond between our and their community is created, fostering civic engagement, which we expect will continue into adulthood. To be eligible, middle and high school students must either reside in Pinecrest or attend a Pinecrest school. This year we look forward to a collaboration with our neighboring cities and their Youth Councils. We are proud of the leadership they exhibit, through this civic engagement, benefiting our community now and in the future.

Parenting is Hard Enough. Don’t Make it Harder. BY TIFFANY LAPOINTE
I
N A CULTURE WHERE WE ARE CONTINUOUSLY bombarded by work, societal and familial expectations, it can be challenging to find a balance between all three and know the best and healthiest ways to get involved in our children’s lives. Dr. Leonard Sax MD, PhD and renowned author of “The Collapse of Parenting,” tells us that there is a direct correlation between parents who demonstrate consistent, present involvement in their child’s life, and raising balanced, well-adjusted, confident children who are ready to face the challenges of the 21st Century. We have shifted from a culture of involved and knowing parents to one that is replaced by more time with peers and technological devices than ever before. So it begs the question, who is raising our children? As parents, it can be difficult to find time to engage with our children in meaningful ways. With a full workload on our plates, finding opportunities to positively influence and reinforce healthy values and create meaningful experiences can be challenging. There is change on the horizon. It is important to note that parenting is a tough job, so give yourself a pat on the back. Let’s not make your job tougher. Give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them daily. It’s hard to make sure that our children grow up becoming responsible, independent citizens in the fast paced world of today. In his book, Dr. Sax identifies practical strategies for parents and instills hope for all those feeling discouraged and overwhelmed with the challenges they face in raising healthy children and teens. Here are a few of his ideas…
Turn off devices. With Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat taking on momentum in our children’s lives, it is difficult to moderate what our children have access to and what they are consuming on social media. Dr. Sax recommends that parents limit time spent on devices and instead create experiences with children. We are the ones who need to be teaching and guiding responsible behavior and the positive character of our children, not social media and the internet. Children need to learn about the world from their parents. Get outside, go on an adventure and create memorable experiences with your children.
Don’t overschedule your children. There is a misconception that more extracurricular activities mean greater experiences. We have started to overschedule not only our own lives, but the lives of our children as well. Between baseball, dancing, play dates, swimming and music lessons, who are our children spending more time with? Dr. Sax recommends that we slow down to spend more time creating meaningful opportunities for our children. Today’s peer groups have an enormous impact on the development of children. When the influence of peers is greater than that of the
28
THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
08.2016
parents, Dr. Sax suggests that this makes our jobs as parents tougher. Yes, healthy peer interactions allow for our children to navigate friendship and build a network of support, however, parents need to remain at the forefront of who influences them.
Let your children know it’s ok to fail. Wait!!! What?? With all the hardships, adversity and challenges faced by children today, we often want to shield and protect them from any adverse effects these hardships and challenges might have. We are well intentioned, wanting to be our children’s greatest advocates at school, among social groups and with professionals, but is this doing more harm than good? Dr. Sax expresses that we need to encourage our children to venture and fail. Let them experience disappointments such as not making the basketball team or getting a low grade on an assignment. If we continue to fight every battle for our kids they lose the willingness to face adversity and persevere through hardships. Sax identifies this loss of willingness as children becoming fragile. So what now? First, take a deep breath, then remind yourself that “it takes a village to raise a child.” It is never too late to become a stronger community of parents for the sake of raising healthy, balanced and independent children. At The Roig Academy we see parents as learning partners. We are committed to strong communication between school, home and
community. Ongoing collaboration between school, community and parents is valued and we want to empower parents to get involved in their children’s lives. Our aim is to strengthen our partnerships with parents. We value your participation and involvement in our school and encourage you to become an active member of our community. Dr. Sax, a sought after parenting expert, has spoken on issues of child and adolescent development in the United States and abroad. The New York Times opinion columnist David Brooks calls Dr. Sax’s first book, Why Gender Matters, “a lucid guide to male and female brain differences.” Dr. Sax has appeared on the TODAY Show, CNN, National Public Radio, PBS, Fox News and the BBC, among many other national and international media outlets. The Roig Academy will be hosting an exclusive presentation at the University of Miami for friends and family of The Roig Academy featuring guest speaker Dr. Leonard Sax, physician, psychologist and critically acclaimed author.

What’s For Lunch?
Wondering what to expect this year? Here’s a preview of what’s to come from a few South Florida schools…
HOWARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY
Teaching students to follow-through can be hard if you lack focus on tasks. Knowing this, Howard Drive Elementary school’s theme for the new school year, “Ready! Set! Action!”, encourages students to study hard, prepare for their future and put knowledge into action. Working off of this theme, the school’s red-carpet “HDE Premier” social will take place on September 1st, the annual fall book fair will be September 26th to 30th, and HDE’s Fun Fair, the biggest fundraiser of the year, will take place on November 5th. “We look forward to the new year with all that PTA has in store and can’t wait to see our student’s achievements,” said Deanna Dalby, HDE Principal.
GULLIVER SCHOOLS
This year Gulliver will incorporate glass classrooms to its already thriving learning environment, where an unspoken message of openness and honesty will heighten productivity and encourage both students and teachers to be more transparent in their actions and more dedicated to their work. Studies have also shown that people feel more comfortable approaching and talking with others when they can see the person that they will be talking with. In this way, a glass classroom may take away barriers and allow students to feel less awkward about talking with a teacher after class if they are seeking assistance or guidance. Gulliver will also introduce block scheduling, an approach that has been used vastly in the public school system. Studies have shown that block scheduling gives students more time to reflect on daily activities. With less information to process over each course of a school day, they retain more information and can achieve a greater quality of learning. Teachers see fewer students during the day, giving them more time for individualized instruction. Longer class periods allow teachers more time to engage with students and cater to each student’s unique learning style. Additionally, with more time between class periods, teachers have more time for planning and can create more effective and organized schedules.
TEMPLE BETH AM
Temple Beth Am Day School has several enhancements and new programs for the 2016-2017 school year. The Elementary School will introduce a new P.E. Enrichment Program which emphasizes healthy body and mind. Some of the new units of study include: Pilates, Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, Mindfulness, and Nutrition. Experts in each field will be coming on campus to provide the instruction. The Elementary School is also offering a new studio art extended day (optional) class, which will focus on landscape painting and mural design, in addition to the already existing extended day classes: Robotics, Coding, Spanish and Television News Production. The School will begin a new series of Parent-Child classes called Toddling Around. These will be offered on Tuesday mornings; in addition to the Wednesday GrandKidding Around class for Grandparents and Children (more information at tbam.org/ dayschool).

PALMETTO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Palmetto Elementary School (PES), a National PTA School of Excellence is excited for the 2016-17 academic year! PES has much to look forward to this year, including a brand new music and art building and updated bathrooms. These school improvements are made possible by the General Obligation Bond (GOB) passed by Miami-Dade voters in 2012. PES is also proud to announce it earned an “A+” performance rating, the 17th year in a row. As always, we want to thank our entire Palmetto Elementary School community for making ours a School of Excellence.

PALMETTO MIDDLE SCHOOL
Palmetto Middle School is spending the summer updating and beautifying. The major donation from Western Union has allowed us to get rid of old, broken furniture and replace with new, beautiful furniture and decor. The only problem is that it’s heavy and a ton of work. Thankfully, Head Football Coach Mike Manasco and his Miami Palmetto Senior High Varsity football team have volunteered many hours to help us. His team has lifted, moved and carried thousands of pounds of furniture. “I really don’t think we could’ve gotten this done without coach Mike and his team. They have worked without complaint for hours on end. They worked quickly and happily. They are really great boys,” said Linda Dwyer, PTSA parent volunteer. Adds Coach Manasco, “As a football program, service to our community is a focal point in building our young men into leaders. Giving back builds pride and a sense of responsibility to the community.”

CHOOL LUNCHES OFTEN LEAVE MUCH TO BE DESIRED. Take the reigns on your kid’s’ lunch by choosing options guaranteed to excite even the pickiest eater. Lose the Juice. Focus on whole fruits instead. Water is best for kids’ hydration! Speaking of fruits...Be fruitful and multiply. Create a fruit salad with at least four different fruits on Sunday nights, store in an airtight container and scoop some every day for lunch. Chop watermelon, mango, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe for a base and add blueberries and raspberries as a topper. We like to sprinkle some cinnamon on top for an anti-inflammatory kick, and sometimes, we treat ourselves with raisins/nuts/goji berries as well for added texture. Kids will enjoy making fruit kebabs with skewers as well; they love being included. Make it gRAIN. Pre-cook whole grains like quinoa/teff/ brown rice/quinoa pasta/amaranth for the week and portion out as the week passes. Don’t forget to add all different types of beans and maybe even some squash for more nutrients and fiber. Sandwiches get boring very fast (or thrown around the lunchroom). Get saucy. Nobody likes a boring salad dressing (olive oil + vinegar…snooze) or sauce (canned tomato sauce… ew). Create your own sauces and dressings for the week using things like avocado oil, mustard, spices, worcestershire sauce, avocado, lemon, ginger, and poppy seeds. Portion into tiny tupperwares and send to school. Glean inspiration from Pinterest, a website that allows you to select your favorite recipes onto your own “boards.” Visit pinterest.com/feedyouressence for fan favorites like zucchini lasagna, beet burgers, sweet potato boats, and more. Make it cute; kids love quinoa butterflies (use a clothespin to separate a plastic baggie of cooked quinoa into “wings” and glue googly eyes onto the clothespin); try “ants on a log” - celery stuffed with natural almond butter, cinnamon, and raisins; make “ladybugs” out of strawberries and grapes; create fruit “donuts” by coring/slicing apples and spreading with Greek yogurt topped with honey, berries, and dark chocolate cacao nibs. The Pinterest world is endless. Can it. Canned fish is great source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and minerals for kids. In fact, canned salmon is one of the greatest sources of Vitamin D around. Use mashed avocado or plain Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise to turn canned fish (or hard-boiled eggs) into a glorious salad spread that kids can use for dipping fresh veggies into. Call in the calcium. Kids need a lot of calcium to build strong bones; pack snacks like unsweetened, unflavored yogurts with fresh fruit, organic string cheeses, kefir, and cottage cheese.

SOS: Save Your Spine
08.2016
S THE SCHOOL YEAR KICKS OFF THERE’S MORE TO WORRY ABOUT THAN just spelling tests and SAT prep. Lugging books and hunching over a computer for hours on end can do irreparable damage to our spines. So what to do? Awareness is key, says Florida Occupational Healthcare’s Alex Pereda, DPT, MTC. First, look for a rolling backpack as opposed to shoulder harness. (The only exception would be a bag under five pounds for children under 12.) “If a shoulder harness backpack is too heavy this not only loads the spine, but also causes back extension which can lead to severe muscular low back tightness and premature arthritic changes in the facet joints located in the lumbar spine,” says Pereda. When it comes to homework time it’s also important to keep an eye on posture… and it may not be the posture you imagine. “Although most of us have been brought up with the mentality of ‘good’ posture (erect posture), for both sitting and standing, multiple studies have suggested that when sitting for more than 20 minutes it is important to sit in a slouched posture (similar to astronauts sitting position during shuttle takeoff),” says Pereda. Sitting in this position, he explains, significantly decreases the compressive forces acting on the spine and positions the muscles in a semi stretched positions therefore avoiding premature arthritic changes in the facet joints located in the lumbar spine and adaptive forces shortening of the muscles collectively. Regardless, sitting for more than 20 minutes in any position can be damaging, so Pereda advises setting a timer to take 10-minute breaks. Another option is to look into hydraulic computer stations that can be adjusted to fit a standing position, but even then it’s important to keep posture at top of mind. “I would recommend that one leg be put on a stool and the other on the floor to unload the spine and to further decrease any incidents of chronic postural injury,” says Pereda.

S THE BITTERSWEET DAYS OF SUMMER COME TO AN END, IT’S TIME FOR us moms to get our back to school preparations underway. School supplies, clothes, shoes…the list is never ending. Here are some affordable yet, celebrity worthy trends that are sure to put the cool in back to school. 1. Athleisure Sneakers: I personally love this trend; a stylish, comfortable and functional Sneaker? What’s not to like? The Adidas SuperStars and Stan Smiths are definitely my favorite and current go-to kicks ($80). Not only do they come in an array of colors but, they come with a soft cushion lining that is uber comfy. These are definitely the “it” sneakers right now (not to mention unisex) so, if you have a hard time finding the right size, convert your size into men’s and/ or children and check inventory in those departments. I bought my pair in the kids department for $12 cheaper! They run big so make sure to size down. 2. Jansport Backpack: Backpacks have come a long way since I was a kid and, not to mention, have gotten a lot more expensive! After testing several different brands at different price points, the classic Jansport is still my number one favorite. These backpacks have not only withstood the test of time but, they have fashionably evolved as well. Now available in tons of cool colors and prints, the Jansport Superbreak is the quintessential backpack and a steal at $36.00. The best part is that all their backpacks come with a lifetime warranty. 3. Wristwatch: My twin tween daughters recently got into the habit of wearing watches and, in retrospect, I wish they would have started sooner. Not only is it staple accessory, but it’s also a great way for them to learn time management skills. I suggest starting off with a digital watch instead of an analog as they can be more difficult to read. Check out the Baby-G 46mm watches ($89). They come in a variety of colors and styles for both guys and girls. They’re also extremely durable and water resistant… must have features for both children and adults. 4. Under Armour Uniforms: Of all the uniforms I researched, Under Armour was my absolute favorite. The concept of a popular athletic clothing brand developing a school uniform line, to me, is pure genius. Under Armour polos are made of their patented Moisture Transport System fabric that wicks sweat and dries fast. They are perfectly lightweight, stain resistant, and won’t shrink or fade like cotton blend fabric. What more can a mom ask for? The girls polos are slightly fitted and come with a U-shaped hem. Minor but cute details that allow for a more feminine fit. 5. Funky Socks: Funky socks are the perfect accessories to spruce up any outfit. I recently bought a few pairs from sockittome.com for my kids and they absolutely loved them. Sock It to Me sells hundreds of fun and quirky prints for men, women, and children. They’re also available in several different lengths (ankle, crew, knee and over the knee). I think they also make great gifts. How adorable are these Gone Fishin’ socks? For those of you with children in school uniforms, find ways to incorporate these pieces in colors or styles that conform with school dress codes. Chic and colorful accessories are great ways to brighten up a drab and boring uniform. Lastly, and most importantly, don’t forget to stock up the wine fridge for back to school… Homework Happy Hour also starts soon.

A Winning Combination: School Band and Children BY PENNY DANIELS
I
T SEEMS LIKE JUST YESTERDAY THAT SCHOOL WAS OUT FOR THE SUMMER. Can you believe in just a short time school will once again be in session? Where did the summer go? Do you remember your first day of middle school? Of high school? Do you remember what was going through your mind? You probably woke up early before the alarm, or before your mom called you to make sure you were not late on the first day. Your clothes were picked out weeks before day 1 of school. You had your books and school supplies ready. And you had a reminder note … remember to take your band instrument. You arrive at school and you are fully equipped. You are ready for the adventure. You find it a challenge maneuvering around the chaotic hallways, stopping frequently to talk with your friends and hoping you can find your classrooms before the bell. Throughout the years, children have struggled to fit in on the first day of middle or high school. They find it exciting, yet are fearful of the unknown, especially if they just moved to the area and do not have established friends. Band provides them with a “home base” and offers a social structure, a self-esteem boost, a way to learn about working with others and how to just have a good time.

In band, children will meet other students that they would not normally interact and work together as a team for a common goal. Every child in band is important! What each child does affects the entire group. It is a team effort, much like athletics and other group activities. Your child does not need to have musical experience to be in the band. So…as the squeaks and squawks begin in the band room, it’s not about playing perfect music. It is all about learning skills that will last a lifetime. The skills they will learn are what future employers are looking for … self-confidence, attention to detail, working in a team environment and how to get things done. As your children find their way through the school maze, encourage them to get involved in band…it’s not too late. School band and children – what a unique combination – bringing children, memories and a fine arts education together. Let the music begin! Musicians Discount Center in Miami help you find the guitar that suits you and fits your budget, too. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs and music lessons. Decisions, Decisions: Do I go for a Dental Implant? BY MARTHA RESTREPO, SOUTH MIAMI FAMILY DENTAL
Y
ES! THIS IS MY SINCERE RECOMMENDATION TO MOST OF OUR PATIENTS. But for many of us health decisions are not that simple. Many thoughts can echo in our minds when it comes to dental implants: “surgery for sure is painful,”“my husband will flip over when I show him the fees,” “I can’t be without teeth during the process,” and so on. But the reality is that today’s modern dentistry offers a solution to most of these setbacks. Let’s do some homework here so that, in any event, you are better informed to make the best decision. Fact # 1: Dental implant procedures have been around for more than forty years. Studies have revealed that dental implants have an almost 95 percent success rate as compared to other tooth replacement alternatives. Fact # 2: Dental implants are the only restoration option that preserves and stimulates bone growth. Dental implants provide the stimulation your body needs to produce dense, healthy jawbone material and keep your face looking full and youthful.
MYTH #1: I’M TOO OLD OR NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS. Truth: Age isn’t really a factor. It’s definitely a great feeling to go from a pair of loose dentures to a permanent dental implant. Even patients with diabetes, heart disease and other health issues have been able to successfully get dental implants. And with newer techniques, we’re now able to perform dental implants on those with less-than-ideal bone density.
MYTH #2: DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE PAINFUL. Truth: The procedure itself is not painful since it is performed with either general or local anesthesia to completely numb your mouth. Oral and IV sedation can help with the anxiety and discomfort during and after the procedure. Pain should not be a factor in your decision making process.
MYTH #3: DENTAL IMPLANTS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. Truth: We won’t sugar coat it—dental implants will have a more expensive upfront cost than other options for replacing teeth; however, dental implants are actually more cost effective when you consider its overall value. The long-term cost for having an implant versus a bridge is much lower, since a bridge will be replaced every 7 -15 years. Your dental implant will most likely never need to be replaced! My best advice: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Bargain dental implant treatment rarely turns out to be a bargain. Dental implants are by far the best solution to missing teeth! If you want a natural-looking and hassle-free smile dental implants is the way to go. If you want to eat virtually anything you want, brush your teeth normally and not be embarrassed with teeth that slip when eating, talking or even laughing, you know the answer.

Yoel Gutierrez of Mosquito Joe BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
W
HEN YOEL GUTIERREZ LEFT A CAREER IN THE IT WORLD TO START A business with longtime friend Omar Sanchez he had no idea his mother would be the key to his success. “I went to visit her in Georgia and her neighbor had purchased a Mosquito Joe franchise,” he says. “I started looking at the business and it was something that always bothered us — my wife gets bitten all the time.” Now, almost two years later, Gutierrez and Sanchez operate in territories that run from north Palmetto Bay all the way to South beach, North Miami Beach, Aventura and Miami Lakes, keeping families happy and safe from the insects that rule our daily lives in South Florida. We sat down with Gutierrez to talk business, safety and, of course, mosquitoes.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE BUSINESS. People know that there’s pest control, but not as much about mosquito control. Now, all the pest control companies are trying to get into mosquito control, but that’s the only thing we do, that’s what Yoel Gutierrez, left, w/ co-owner, Omar Sanchez. we focus on. Omar and I employ a team of experienced technicians dedicated to making outdoor spaces for residential and commercial properties mosquito-free. All our technicians are licensed and trained in mosquito control treatment applications and are a great resource for specific concerns you have about your yard. We’re trying to relieve the stress of going outside for families and children.
WHAT’S THE PROCESS FOR BEGINNING (AND MAINTAINING) TREATMENT? We are a non-contractual company, unlike traditional pest control companies. You can start and finish your service whenever you wish, although we suggest to continue the service year round so the mosquito population does not have a chance to regain its numbers. We service your property every 3 weeks to keep your barrier at 100% efficacy. If a homeowner leaves on an extended vacation we can also put their account on hold. We also provide one-time special event sprays. Mosquito Joe has sprayed for events such as weddings, birthday parties and corporate events. We have serviced venues and locations such as Tropical Park, Shops at Sunset Place and Wayside Market, just to name a few.
IS THE SPRAY SAFE FOR KIDS AND PETS? All of our products are pet and child safe. They only affect insects. All we ask is that any animals and children be out of the way while we spray and then stay out of the area 30 minutes or so after the treatment so that it can dry.

The biggest issue is that the primary mosquito we have here in South Florida (Aedes Aegypti) is a container breeder. Anything that holds up to a tablespoon of water… they can breed in. We’ll treat a yard and then it will inevitably rain and new water will collect in toys or planters and create a breeding ground. So, the best thing you can do is to regularly check for standing water. Pots, toys, gutters etc… make sure they are all draining and clean. Make sure to look at your gutter drains, every one of those little ridges holds water in the bottom and no one ever tips them over. Those are always full of mosquito larvae.
08.2016
Of course, wear long sleeved, light-colored clothing as well as repellent. And try to pay attention to everything in your yard, even plants. Bromeliads hold tons of water. Once a day hose them down so that you’re replacing that standing water with fresh water!

What is Hospice?
H
OSPICE IS A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF MEDICAL CARE AND SUPport for people nearing the end of life. The hospice philosophy is based on the ideas that no one should die alone or in pain; life-limiting illnesses can cause emotional and spiritual distress as well as physical pain, all of which deserve quality professional attention and compassionate care; and a serious illness affects the entire family, not just the person who is ill. Those affected need and deserve ongoing support before and after a loved one’s death. Hospice provides pain management and appropriate palliative care, care that focuses on the patient’s comfort, when curative medical treatments no longer enhance quality of life. Hospice strives to meet the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and provides support for the entire family during the illness and for at least one year after a patient’s death. Most hospice care is provided at home, where most people want to be when they are ill. Hospice care can also be provided in a nursing or residential facility and in certain circumstances, in a hospital or hospice management residence. Hospice also provides medications, medical equipment and supplies necessary to promote comfort at home or in other hospice settings. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. The focus shifts toward helping the patient achieve the Dr Ismael Roque-Velasco President and Chief Executive Officer maximum quality of life by attend- Hospice Care of South Florida ing to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
“A Helping Hand When You Need It the Most”
Hospice Care allows end-of-life patients the opportunity to live pain-free with the following services:
Routine Home Care Continuous Care at Home General Inpatient Care Respite Care
Hospice Care vs. Standard Medical Care Some differences between hospice care and medical care are: »» Hospice looks at all of the patient’s and their family’s needs. A coordinated team of hospice professionals, assisted by volunteers, work together to meet the patient’s and family’s emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the patient’s physical needs. »» An emphasis is put on controlling pain and symptoms through the most advanced techniques available as well as on emotional and spiritual support tailored to the needs of the patient and their family. »» Hospice recognizes that a serious illness affects not only the person who is ill, but the entire family as well. The family and patient are the “unit of care” for hospice professionals. At times, other family members may actually need more attention than the patient.
To learn more call (305) 591-1606 and speak to one of our representatives for more information on how Hospice Care of South Florida can help you and your loved ones in your time of need.
Who pays for Hospice care? Hospice palliative care is covered 100% by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, with no out-of-pocket costs to the patient or family. The costs covered must be related to the terminal illness, including the services of the hospice team, medications, medical equipment and supplies. Behind the Curtain…Literally BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

OR RICK DIESMONE, HIS BUSINESS IS TRULY IN HIS BLOOD. THE OWNER of Rick and Nancy’s Window Fashions grew up in the family business – his father opened the first drapery store in Perrine in the 1950s. Today, more than 20 years after opening his own store, Diesmone remains the go-to expert for South Florida businesses and homeowners who want the very best in window fashion. Every day, Diesmone and his team work with clients to define their needs for privacy, light control, style, safety, durability and maintenance and consult with them to choose window coverings that offer beauty, architectural appeal, energy efficiency and sound insulation. In fact, says Diesmone, living in South Florida creates specialized needs when it comes to window coverings. “People want to keep the light and bright feel of their home while keeping out the heat,” he says. “To that end, the big craze has been sheer weave shades. They’re made to stop 99 percent of the UV and heat from coming in without covering up the views or blocking the light. You can have the best of both worlds; you get the sunlight but control the heat.” Another big trend according to Diesmone is the rise of the smart home. When it comes to windows, that means controlling shades via computer or smart phone, allowing them to shift automatically according to the light and controlling the shades remotely when homeowners are out of town. “It’s going to become more and more prevalent and become more affordable over the next few years.” No matter what, Diesmone says his ultimate responsibility is not to trends but to the space. “We’ll always send someone out to look at the home and then make suggestions as to what will work within the space and with the windows,” he says. That means that the tried-and-true don’t always have to take a backseat. Though surprising to some,
Diesmone says drapes are prime for a comeback. “A lot of people are doing shades and blinds but then dressing up their windows with accents of material or side panels,” he says. “A really modern way to do that is with a ripple fold—it’s sort of an updated version of a pleated fold. It will give the windows a little something extra and dress them up.” And sometimes, it simply comes down to personal preference. “Some people just love drapes.” Rick & Nancy’s Window Fashions can be found at 8781 SW 132nd St, Miami, FL 33176. II. Solar Dermatitis and Skin Burns Just like we can get dangerous sunburns, our pets are prone to solar dermatitis and burns if exposed too long to the sun’s powerful rays. White coated animals will suffer the worst burns since they lack enough skin pigment to protect their skin. Likewise, animals with short fur have less protection of the skin, especially on hairless areas such as the nose, ear flaps, and belly. The most dangerous consequence of sun burns is skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma. This is a highly aggressive skin cancer that is too common in pets, and is totally preventable. Treatment requires surgery and in many cases, further therapies such as radiation or chemotherapy are also required. To prevent sun burns keep your pet inside or in complete shade when the sun rays are strongest, from 10:00 am TO 3:00 pm. For those light coated pets that enjoy laying in the sun for a few minutes daily, there are now elegant sun proof hats and apparel for pets, that are stretchy and comfortable to wear (see photo).

A heatstroke develops when core body temperatures rises and stays above a certain temperature. In dogs and cats, this threshold temperature is 106 degrees, at which they can start convulsing (their normal core temperature is 100-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit). Dogs and cats are more prone to heat strokes than humans since they lack sweat glands over most of their body surface, affecting their ability to sweat and cool their bodies. Pets with flats noses such as Bulldogs, Pugs and Persian cats, are more prone to heat strokes even in slightly warm temperatures, since their nasal structures are not efficient enough for cooling the body effectively. Black-colored animals absorb and maintain the heat in their bodies more readily, making them more susceptible to a heatstroke. Small pets such as rabbits and ferrets typically live in cooler temperatures and have more difficulty handling the summer heat of South Florida. Luckily, heat strokes can be prevented following simple steps: Check the weather report daily so you can plan how to keep your pet safe while you are at work. Never leave your pets outside unsupervised, even if shade and cool water are provided. Never leave a pet in a enclosed balcony that receives direct sunlight during the day, leaving no place for the pet to escape the heat. Lastly, never leave a pet in a park car, even if the car is in the shade with the windows open. Leaving a pet in a parked car can develop into a life threatening condition in as fast as fiveto-ten minutes. In Florida this is such a common occurrence that the law allows individuals to break into a strangers car if an animal is in obvious respiratory distress inside the locked car, the owner is not close by, and a 911 call has already been placed. If you find your pet walking drunk-like, slow, confused, with extremely red gums and excessive panting, he or she might be suffering from a heatstroke. Rapidly transfer the pet to a cooler ventilated area, apply wet towels (not ice) to the neck, inguinal and axillary areas (where the blood vessels are closer to the skin), and call the closest emergency veterinary clinic to notify them that an animal with a heatstroke is on the way.
Galloway Veterinary Hospital is a full service companion animal hospital. It is our commitment to provide quality veterinary care throughout the life of your pet. Our services and facilities are designed to assist in routine preventive care for your pet.

Romance Awaits at Hawks Cay BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
L
ADIES AND GENTS, HAVE I GOT THE PERFECT ROMANTIC GETAWAY FOR you and one lucky person. Only an hour and a half drive from Miami and situated on 60 acres of fun and relaxation is Hawks Cay, where everything oozes romance. Pulling into the driveway, I felt like I was arriving at a sugar plantation. The West Indies inspired décor sets the tone for what can only be described as the perfect escape. The guestrooms are spacious and beautifully appointed with dark wood, along with a shower built for two (wink). In the morning, you can make coffee in your room and drink it outside on your private wooden deck, lounging on a chaise overlooking the pool while you plan your day. Let’s see, pool, tennis, nap, spa, dinner, fire pit. Did I mention the shower for two? As Cupid’s guests, you can spend your days relaxing by either the family pool or the adult only pool, which offers cabanas. If you want to feel like Robinson Crusoe, head over to their beautiful saltwater lagoon where you can ease yourself back onto a waiting lounge chair under a Tiki Hut with a frozen margarita. If you’re looking for more action, than the choice is all yours. There’s kite boarding, paddle boarding, SNUBA, guided jet ski tours, tennis, fishing and Segway tours. The Dolphin Connection is an amazing experience unto itself. The resort boasts its own dolphin lagoon and has several different programs depending on how up close and personal you want to become with their four adorable resident dolphins. Lunchtime will find you either at the Beach Grill, which offers the best tasting beachside food I’ve ever tasted, or the Ocean Grill with a Mediterranean menu. You can’t go wrong either way. After that wonderful lunch, take a nice stroll over to the marina, hand in hand, and grab a smoothie from Dockside Snack Shop. Moving right along into the latter part of the day, you two lovebirds can head over to the award winning Calm Waters Spa. There are many treatments to choose from which includes their signature Key Lime Mojito body treatment as well as a specially designed menu for the man in your life. They have couples suites so perhaps a massage au deux? As you’re checking out, be sure to pick up their signature line of Key Lime products to use in that shower. Sunset at Hawks Cay is breathtaking and there is no better way to appreciate it than on a sunset cruise sipping wine, wrapped in the arms of your sweetheart. Back at the dock, it’s a wave to the captain and back to your room to get ready for the evening ahead. There’s that shower again (wink) and off to dinner. Dinner time becomes a dilemma given all of the resort’s fabulous restaurants. There is Ocean which offers beautiful tropical views and a Mediterranean menu; their newest restaurant, Angler and Ale, where you can bring your fresh fish and have it cooked up for you along with some other Florida Key’s specialties; or Latininspired Almas, with it’s selection of fine rums and cigars. As the night winds down, sitting by the fire pit with the warmth of the flames on your face and the soft sounds of music in the air, your thoughts drift to how lucky you are to spend time in this paradise. Homemade Healthy Dog Licking Toothpaste BY TAMI MAIER
O
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
RAL HEALTH IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE FOR OUR DOGS. DENTAL DISEASE can cause secondary infections in the blood, a weakened immune system, susceptibility to disease and illness as well as tooth decay and loss. Human toothpaste is dangerous for dogs and contains ingredients that can make your dog ill, causing issues with their kidneys and liver. Toothpaste for dogs that you can buy at the pet store can be expensive and may contain questionable ingredients and chemical additives. When you make this homemade toothpaste it is healthy, safe herbal mixture that has plenty of health benefits and no junk or dangerous chemicals. Here is a list of the ingredients and the benefits they provide to promote dental health for your dog.
Ingredient List Coconut Oil: Organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil is a highly digestible healthy fat that improves absorption of the other ingredients, also acting as a base for the toothpaste recipe. Coconut oil is an antibacterial, antifungal antiseptic and is also a powerful deodorizer and can eliminate bad breath immediately. Turmeric: Turmeric is a natural, safe way to whiten teeth. It is also antimicrobial and antibacterial, and is a anti-inflammatory. Turmeric will also help prevent plaque build up. Parsley: Parsley acts as a mineral rich deodorizer that is also antibacterial. Parsley is also known to be an anti-inflammatory and has the right vitamin and mineral mix to promote dental health. Kelp: Kelp promotes plaque removal while supplying the mouth and body with chlorophyll and minerals. It is also antibacterial.
Dog Licking Toothpaste Recipe: Ingredients »» 1 cup of organic, unrefined, virgin coconut oil »» 1 teaspoon hot water (optional) »» 1/2 teaspoon of organic turmeric »» 1/2 teaspoon of kelp »» 1/8 tablespoon of organic dried parsley flakes
Directions: 1. 1. Place one cup of coconut oil in a mixing bowl and add one teaspoon of hot water, if needed, to make it soft and pliable. 2. 2. Add the turmeric, kelp and parsley flakes. 3. 3. Mix thoroughly, store in fridge between uses.
Specializing in dog walking, pet sitting, pet boarding and now offering a full line of all natural pet products. Our goal at Live Pawsitively is to provide care for the whole dog thru love, companionship, nutrition and exercise.
Use a very soft bristle toothbrush or your finger to brush your dog’s teeth. Rub the teeth gently and massage the gums lightly. Make sure the toothpaste is soft by leaving it out at room temperature before using. Never put in the microwave or cook in any way as that will kill the enzymes and nutrients. For dogs that need intensive dental cleaning, you can use daily for a week then switch to every other day. For dogs that just need maintenance you can brush two or three times a week. Happy Brushing!

Forgiveness is a Must BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
Y
EAH, RIGHT! ARE YOU SERIOUS?” I HEAR IT ALL THE time from hurt, betrayed and emotionally abused clients who crave to move on but continue to carry their steamer trunks of resentment, anger, revenge and hate around with them. When I ask if they have worked on forgiveness, they look at me like I am a traitor, when in truth, I am their ally. Yes, I speak the truth - forgiveness will set you free. Yep, take it from me, a forgiveness convert. I, too, had to commit to forgiving those that so deeply hurt my kids and me. Trust when I tell you, by the time the divorce is final, and even years after, the forgiveness list can get quite long. The fly in the ointment is this: there is actually a part of you that wants to hold onto the justification of the anger and consequently, not forgiving. The Catch 22 is that unless you do, you will never feel the peace that allows you to fully move on. Forgiveness is profound and life changing as it breaks the tie that binds us to the past. The power we hold to be able to let go of things we couldn’t control and leave them in the past is within all of us, we just need to make the choice. Forgiving others for their limitations will free you to not just live life but to experience life at its highest peak. Why settle for the valley when you can stand on the mountaintop? Think of it this way, not forgiving someone keeps us tied to them. It allows them to control us from afar and can possibly hinder any new relationships due to inner conflict, stress and mistrust. Wouldn’t Marley have given anything to be free of those clanking, heavy chains? Too late for him but not for you. I’m not going to sugar coat the fact that to forgive someone who hurt you so deeply is hard work and something that warrants a strong commitment, but it is possible and the rewards are miraculous. Here are some tips to help you on the path of healing. 1. Stop the blame game as it only keeps you entrenched in what was and keeps that person as part of your life. 2. Be willing to see things through a different lens. Nothing happens to us that doesn’t teach us something. When you can look at those that have caused you pain, see the lessons they have taught you and be grateful for that lesson, then you are on your way to forgiveness. 3. Stop replaying the hurtful memories. The more you replay them, the deeper they take root. 4. Accept that you might never get an explanation or an apology. If you are holding out for one before you feel you can move forward with forgiveness, you might just be in a holding pattern for eternity. 5. Yield to the fact that not everyone is meant to be in your life forever and that they are guided by their own limitations and life experiences. Don’t personalize their behavior towards you, realize they have their own lessons to learn and release them. Do you want to be imprisoned or liberated? Do you want to drown in the past or breath in the present moment? Do you want to feel anger and resentment or peace and contentment? Two things can’t occupy the same place at the same time. You choose. Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). She professionally coaches clients on how to avoid the breakup backlash and live better, not bitter. As a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator trained in collaborative divorce, Debbie gives clients the tools they need to successfully untie the knot and stand strong in the wake of adversity. She brings her formal training and life experience into her coaching practice to empower and educate clients through their divorce journey and onto new beginnings. Easy Tips To Prevent Pet Summer Emergencies

Apply sunscreen for babies (SPF 15 or above) on the hairless areas, mainly on top of the nose and ear flaps. Avoid any sunscreen that contains zinc, since it can be toxic if your pet licks it off.

III. Trauma to Toe Pads Perhaps the most common heat related problem that veterinarians see during the hot season is burning of the paws. Going for walks on hot pavement, pavers, sand, or other ground material that stores heat will cause burning, bleeding and sloughing off of the foot pads. This is an extremely painful condition, and many times the main symptom that is seen is limping and/or licking of the paws. It is a treatable condition, though it takes several weeks to heal completely. To keep your dog’s paws safe, go for walks on cool grounds such as grass. Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day, and consider using dog shoes or boots to protect the paws. Special care should be taken in choosing the proper fit to avoid turning and twisting of the shoe. Look for light and comfortable materials, so your dog will be more likely to accept the shoes. Summer time is an enjoyable season of boat rides, beach, and outdoor fun in South Florida for all, including our pets. Proper care should be taken to avoid an emergency that potentially could be fatal. Have fun with your pets and keep them safe! Weight Loss: The Big Picture BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI

there are still solutions. Weight loss is like a puzzle. There are many different ways to begin a puzzle and to put a puzzle together. Every person, no matter how similar, may complete it differently and effectively reach the same end goal. While weight loss (and puzzles) can be difficult, neither is unattainable, though the method of approach can vary from person to person. Due to variables such as age, muscular component, ethnicity, gender, and many more, there is no cookie cutter approach of dieting that works for every single person. Sure, cutting out carbs and fats might generally work for many people to lose weight quickly, but maintenance for a diet like that will not come easily for most. While some may require surgical assistance, others may simply need a structured diet. The first and most important step in finding out which path is suitable for you and your future is to see a certified expert. This accredited and trusted expert will help you start putting the pieces of your weight loss puzzle together by giving you a strategic plan, coaching you through the frustrating and difficult times, providing advice and guidance, and ultimately supporting you every step of your journey so they can cheer you on as the last piece of your puzzle comes together. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, resultsmd.com or email info@soler-baillo.com.

EIGHT LOSS IS AN EXTREMELY BROAD SUBJECT. Almost everyone is trying to lose weight or keep it off. Americans, and the rest of the world, spend billions of dollars trying to gain control of their weight, unsuccessfully! “Why?” you ask. The answer is this: there are so many factors that can affect how the human body consumes food and stores energy-- the combinations are unfathomable. The sheer amount of time, money, and energy spent on diets, medications, and surgeries without a true answer leaves many thinking that nothing works. But the truth isn’t that nothing works, it’s that not one single thing works for every single person. The key to successful weight control is to identify what causes your weight gain and retention, and to take the necessary steps to get your body, and your life, under control. Weight gain can be caused by a multitude of factors. For some people, a hormonal imbalance brought on by unhealthy eating habits is the cause of weight gain/retention. This imbalance can escalate to the body’s lack of sensitivity to important digesting hormones, such as insulin, which in turn can result in a multitude of complications, such as excess storage of fat or diabetes. For other people, weight gain/retention can be a hereditary challenge in which their body and their brain are not on the same page. And still for others, the challenge lies in not being motivated or supported by others to maintain or lose weight. Given this information, we begin to understand the multitude of factors that can combine in many ways, resulting in a unique weight loss challenge for each individual. While there isn’t an absolute truth or universal rule-of-thumb to weight loss,
