A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Summer is Over!
S
EPTEMBER IS HERE AND FALL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, WITH (HOPEfully) cooler temperatures and the last half of Hurricane season in our sights. We’re back from vacation, back to school and back in our own routines, getting ready to jump right into fall events. One event on the calendar is this year’s 10th annual GSD gala on October 1, raising money for research into Glycogen Storage Disease and chaired by our September Philanthropist Meredith Gussin. Meredith and her husband, Grant, have been champions for GSD research as you can read on page 16. Elsewhere in this issue we’re celebrating the opening days of South Florida’s cultural arts season, spotlighting innovative and exciting programming in dance, theater, music and family entertainment. From the South Dade Cultural Arts Center to the Arsht to smaller venues like Actor’s Playhouse and Area Stage, we’re so lucky to be living in the midst of Miami’s cultural arts explosion. Forget Basel, there’s something every weekend for us to experience. As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 8, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town. And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find an online version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. Go Dolphins! Go Canes! And of course, Go Blue! Sincerely,

CITY'S ANNEXATION INITIATIVE FOR LITTLE GABLES AND HIGH PINES MOVES FORWARD The City Commission agreed recently to move forward with the annexation process to incorporate the Little Gables and High Pines neighborhoods into Coral Gables. On July 26, the City Commission heard a presentation addressing the feasibility of annexing both neighborhoods that are surrounded on three sides by properties already in Coral Gables. The next step in the process is to discuss the annexation proposal with neighborhood residents and gauge community support primarily through local meetings in the annexation areas. Petitions supporting the City’s annexation proposal will be sought from 20 percent of registered voters in each area. Following this step, the City Commission will hold a public hearing with mailed notice to all residents within Little Gables and High Pines, and those within 600 feet outside the boundaries. Any resident of Coral Gables may attend this hearing and express their opinion. If the City Commission determines at the hearing that the annexation will be in the best interest of the City and has substantial local support, they could vote to submit a formal application to Miami-Dade County for review and approval, a process estimated to take about 12-15 months.

Traveling in Style BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NYONE WHO SPENT ANY PART OF THEIR SUMMER ROAD TRIPPING KNOWS all too well the hassles of car travel. But what if there was a better way? That’s the idea behind Red Coach, a luxury motor coach transportation service serving more than a dozen destinations in Florida, including Miami International Airport, the University of Florida, FSU, USF and Orlando (with additional shuttle service to specific hotels and resorts). And this isn’t your average bus. Each coach offers two riding options: First Class, which boasts 27 seats at 21 inches wide and Business Class with 38 seats that are each 18 inches wide. Every coach also offers up free Wi-Fi, 110v individual power outlets and oversize leather seats that recline into beds as well as free, on-demand movies. Passengers are allowed to check two bags of up to 50 lbs. Each for free, along with a carryon. Other amenities available to travelers include footrests, clean lavatories and GPS Satellite Monitoring Systems for safety and security. Calling themselves a “safer, more comfortable, and reliable mode of transportation,” for Floridians, the company (a division of South American transportation giant Grupo Plaza) says they are continuing to expand offerings, partner-
ing with FIU to launch a new, West Dade stop and “bringing value and convenience that will ultimately improve people’s travel experiences.” Red Coach representatives say the service is ideal for not only college students heading back to campus, but for high school students looking to check out Florida universities and those looking to experience Florida’s many attractions without the stress of airline or car travel. Booking can be done online on by phone up to 35 minutes before the coach departs (you can choose your own seat location) and student discounts are available for those who register on the site.

HERE’S A NEW FOUR LETTER WORD IN TOWN AND IT’S BEEN INESCAPABLE for the population of South Florida this summer: Zika. The virus that’s taken hold of the area (and the world) is transmitted by mosquitoes and causes only a brief, mild flu-like illness in most but is extremely dangerous to pregnant women; Zika-related birth defects have now been declared an international public health emergency. We spoke with Dr. Luis Roca of South Miami Women’s Health to find out the what, where and how of this year’s most notorious virus.
WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN IN MIAMI RIGHT NOW?
Elephantito Baby & Child Lifestyle Store 5855 Sunset Drive South Miami FL, 33143 Monday – Saturday 10am to 6pm
Take precautions. Unfortunately we are now in an area where Zika infection has been documented and although it seems to have been contained you can not be too safe. Use mosquito repellants and long sleeves/pants, avoid prolonged exposures outside if possible and certainly avoid affected areas, and finally empty any containers or vessels with standing water that you may have outdoors.
HOW CONCERNED SHOULD WOMEN BE ABOUT THE VIRUS, BOTH THOSE WHO ARE PREGNANT AND THOSE WHO MAY BE LOOKING TO GET PREGNANT IN THE NEAR FUTURE? Although rare, Zika is still a real threat and women and their partners shouldn’t put themselves at risk.. Women thinking of getting pregnant may want to hold off for a month or two until we are sure it’s been contained and also gives them that eight-week window that women who have tested positive need to wait before attempting pregnancy.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A ZIKA TEST AND WHO SHOULD GET ONE? Any woman who is pregnant (and her partner) living in Miami-Dade should discuss testing options with her physician. Certainly, those that have had symptoms of Zika or have been in the Wynwood area should be screened for Zika infection.
WHAT’S THE TREATMENT FOR SOMEONE WHO TESTS POSITIVE? Unfortunately there is no treatment. Women who are pregnant and test positive will be monitored closely with frequent ultrasounds to check for adequate growth of their baby.
SHOULD YOUNG WOMEN THINK ABOUT PUTTING OFF GETTING PREGNANT UNTIL THE VIRUS IS BETTER UNDERSTOOD/UNDER CONTROL IN MIAMI? I don’t think it would hurt to wait a month or two while we ensure there are no more outbreaks in Miami-Dade County.
Present this card and enjoy a 20% discount on your first order. 14
THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
09.2016
IF SOMEONE CONTRACTS ZIKA, HOW WILL THAT AFFECT THEIR FUTURE PREGNANCY PLANS? Women who test positive should wait at least eight weeks before getting pregnant and if their partner tests positive, it is recommended that they wait six months before attempting pregnancy.

The Power of Words BY BRENNEN LOPEZ
Y
OU JUST FINISHED THE LESSON TODAY AND YOU HAVE A TEST TOMORrow? That’s retarded.” “That hat makes you look like a retard.” The definition of retard is a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance, as in a machine. Many decades ago, the word retard or retarded was used in both medicine and law as a way to describe persons with intellectual disabilities. While that is no longer the case (federal and state laws and the medical community now properly use the terms intellectual disability or intellectual disabilities) an unfortunate result of that dated description is that has become a slang term used to insult someone or something. I have a young cousin who is intellectually disabled, but other than the fact that he doesn’t process information as I do or as his brother or many others do, that doesn’t mean anyone has the right to insult him or anyone else who’s different. I know that most people don’t use the word with the actual intent to hurt someone. However, I believe that if people took the time to consider how the word was used in the past (and still by many) and the impact that it has, they would think twice before using it. I am a member of the Youth Activation Committee of Special Olympics FloridaMiami Dade and one of our main focuses right now is the R-Word Awareness campaign. The R-Word Awareness campaign asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-Word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people, like my little cousin. While I’ve gotten support for the campaign, I also have had people tell me that using the word is no big deal and that it’s not hurting anyone. But it is a big deal, and it does hurt so many people. When you refer to something as “retarded,” you are insulting my cousin and everyone in the special needs community. Lately, our society has been focused on being politically correct... and I think that’s important to help all of us get along better. But that should include everyone who’s different. Just like no one has the right to call anyone else a slang word or derogatory term, it’s important to not use the word retard to refer to someone with intellectual disabilities, to try to insult someone, or to refer to something that doesn’t seem right. I’m hoping to help raise awareness and instill compassion for special needs children at my school and in my community. To that end, I’m asking everyone to please take the pledge at r-word.org/r-word-pledge.aspx. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. Hopefully, together we can change the R-word to Respect.

Meredith Gussin BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
THE CHILDREN’S FUND FOR GSD RESEARCH BACKGROUND Just four short years ago, Pinecrest native Gussin had never heard of Glycogen Storage Disease, but when her son Jamie was born with the disease she got a crash course in living with the genetic disorder. After being introduced to other families in the GSD community, Gussin (who owns the Downtown Dadeland, West Kendall and Doral locations of Lime Fresh Mexican Grill with husband, Grant) learned of The Children’s Fund and immediately set out to help them work toward their goal — a cure. “I knew that I wanted to immediately get involved and jump into fundraising to help Jamie and other kids with GSD as actively and as best possible,” says Gussin. “I became a board member and now am the co-chair of our annual fundraising event.” ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S FUND AND GSD1 Established by Wendy and David Feldman in 2002 after the birth of their son Jonah, the foundation is run by parents, family and friends of children affected by GSD1. And what is GSD1? Glycogen Storage Disease Type 1a is a rare genetic metabolic disorder centered in the liver. In children afflicted with GSD1, a specific enzyme that breaks down certain carbohydrates, including glycogen, is either missing or not functioning properly. Because of the missing /impaired enzyme, the body cannot create glucose from glycogen and it is difficult to maintain normal blood sugar levels between meals without constant feedings. Dangerous by-products, in combination with low blood sugar, leads to numerous complications including impaired breathing, seizures, coma and death if a very strict dietary regimen is not followed. “The Children’s Fund is the only foundation in existence that raises money to support research for GSD1a,” says Gussin. “In addition to caring for our children, a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week responsibility with grave consequences if extreme vigilance is not practiced, we work tirelessly to raise money and to support exciting research. Dogs born with GSD have been cured via gene therapy and we are beyond hopeful that human clinical trials will commence in the very near future.”
Our vision is to continue raising as much money as possible to support the existing research. We are hopeful yet cautious and do not plan on stopping until our kids are healthy and have the opportunity to live the normal, healthy lives they so deserve.” 16

SPREADING THE WORD Because the Children’s Fund is run almost entirely by volunteers who have a family connection to the disease, the daily work of education and fundraising is an extremely personal undertaking. “GSD is so rare that it is considered an orphan disease, which means it gets no federal funding,” she says. “Without the families of kids with GSD raising money, GSD will not have the funding needed to help us accomplish our goals of curing this disease.” On a daily basis that means raising awareness, working with local news and media outlets and planning events throughout the country. “A cure is so close, but we can’t get there without fundraising,” says Gussin.
ROCKING ON Gussin’s South Florida gala, which takes place this year on October 1, is the single largest fundraising event of the year for the foundation, with every cent raised going directly to research. “We’ve had close to 400 people in attendance each year,” she says. “We work hard on changing the venue and theme each year to keep our guests engaged and excited for the event.” This year’s event takes place at The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, with a theme of “Rock the Night for GSD.” “We have an amazing community surrounding us that help keep our cause relevant,” says Gussin.

IAMI CAN BOAST MANY THINGS. SUNSHINE, PALM TREES, CULTURAL arts, and, according to Cisca Real Estate Managing Broker and Chief Legal Officer Bryan Levy, one more thing: a truly unique real estate market. “There are a lot of creative transactions going on in the marketplace,” says Levy. “That’s one reason having a real estate agent with my experience helps clients.” Levy, who brings almost two decades of experience as a real estate attorney, opened the real estate brokerage Cisca Real Estate in 2009 after noticing a growing need for real estate guidance in clients who came to his firm, Balleste & Levy, PA, and to that of his good friend Frank Balleste, CEO of Cisca Construction. “It made sense for us to open up the real estate company,” says Levy, who grew up as a close family friend to Balleste. “What we’ve seen is a lot of times where an agent may not represent clients in all aspects of the real estate transaction or may have them sign listings or contracts without the client being appropriately consulted. As such, it seemed like a natural progression to provide the realty services.” Today, Cisca Real Estate works with buyers and sellers in both residential and commercial capacities, handling everything from sales, contracts and closings to advice and guidance to reach clients’ goals. Rather than just focusing on a specific area of South Florida, the Cisca Team focuses on client relationships, offering what they call “boutique services” from Miami to West Palm Beach and beyond. “It’s not just servicing a certain area, or specific services for here or there. We can help the client with anything that’s going on with their real estate holdings,” Levy says. That means protecting clients’ interests and avoiding the risk that comes with not being represented by the right agent. As Levy says, “questionable real estate transactions” are still occurring. “People are still being taken advantage of, especially if their home is upside down or in distress,” he adds. Levy also works hard to help clients protect their finances and future, whether that means placing properties under a
trust or LLC or sitting down for a guidance talk with potential clients. “You have to protect your assets – everything you’ve worked hard for,” he advises. To that end, Levy always offers potential clients a strategy consultation when needed. “They tell me what they’re trying to do and I’ll give them my thoughts on all aspects of the transaction, not just the purchase or sale,” he says. Levy’s attention to detail and dedication to honest advice has gained him a loyal stable of clients who have stayed with the attorney since his early days and have continued to refer him business. “When a client comes to me they feel secure and protected,” he says. “I’m going to be completely transparent, whether it’s telling you the true value of your home, how to best sell your home, or how to otherwise protect your assets.” His team, as well, brings more than 40 years of experience in the South Florida real estate market and takes pride in making itself available to clients no matter how large or small the request, creating a comfort level that Levy says separates them from other companies. “We like to have an open platform for the client to be able to ask questions and make sure they feel comfortable,” he says. “Trust is born from treating clients honestly and with transparency.” The Cisca Team’s unique blend of real estate, law, and construction under one roof continues to expand their geographical and client base, allowing them to service everyone from high-end residential real estate buyers to estate sellers and commercial clients looking for buildings or office space. “We are a team,” explains Levy. “We work together with our clientele through every step of the real estate process to deliver thorough, consistent, and dependable results. Once you walk through our doors, you become a member of the Cisca Team.”

Healthy Eyes for Back to School BY DR. LINDA CHOUS, CHIEF EYE CARE OFFICER, UNITEDHEALTHCARE
A
UGUST WAS CHILDREN’S EYE HEALTH AND SAFETY MONTH, MAKING now an ideal time to get your child’s eyes checked as the new school year begins. Children face unique eye health challenges, including injury, infection, reading difficulties and nearsightedness. According to the American Optometric Association, 80 percent of what a child learns is through his or her eyes. The inability to see clearly can affect a child’s physical, mental and social development, which in turn can affect academic and athletic performance and, ultimately, self-esteem. Many times a child is unaware and won’t complain if vision isn’t normal. Early detection of vision problems is crucial, as untreated vision problems can impair development, affect learning, and possibly lead to permanent vision loss. As your child heads back to the classroom, schedule an appointment for a comprehensive eye examination. It’s also important to look for these signs of possible vision problems: »» 3D movies: 3D movies require eyes to process information as a team, so difficulty viewing 3D content can be a sign of underlying vision issues. After watching a 3D movie, look for these “3D” signs of vision problems: discomfort, dizziness and the inability to appreciate 3D content. If your child shows or talks about any of these signs, head to the eye doctor. »» Squinting while reading or watching television: Ask your child if the text or screen is blurry or if reading gives them a headache. A “yes” answer could be an indication of an underlying vision problem. »» Difficulty hitting or catching a ball: If your child regularly misses or drops the ball, schedule an eye exam. Vision impairment might be affecting handeye coordination. This could also be due to a lazy eye, otherwise known as amblyopia. Amblyopia is when one eye is favored over the other, which can affect depth perception, making it difficult to assess objects in front of you. Another factor that can affect your child’s eye health – and adult eye health – is digital eye strain, which is caused by frequent or prolonged use of computers, smartphones or tablets. Help your child practice healthy vision habits by keeping computer screens and tablets about 30 inches away from their eyes, resting their eyes every 20 minutes; and blinking frequently. Also, it’s good to practice the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds and look at something 20 feet away. Remember that a school’s vision screening does not look for the same problems that a comprehensive eye exam does. A child’s first comprehensive eye exam should occur between 6 months and 12 months, again at age three and before entering school at age five or six. A visit to an eye health professional can help detect conditions such as crossed eyes (strabismus), lazy eye, nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism early, before visual development and learning is affected. Treatment may include glasses, patching and/or eye exercises. For adults and children, a comprehensive eye exam also can uncover other health conditions not usually associated with the eyes, including multiple sclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, elevated cholesterol and Crohn’s disease. A recent study by UnitedHealthcare found that six percent of these chronic conditions were first identified by eye care doctors. For some diseases, including multiple sclerosis and diabetes, eye care professionals identified 15 percent of study participants diagnosed with those chronic conditions. Make an appointment for your child now as part of this year’s back-to-school routine. In partnership with your child’s eye doctor, you can make sure your child is ready for school and ready to learn.

What’s Happening in Our Communities? JIM CASON MAYOR OF CORAL GABLES
T
HE CITY OF CORAL GABLES IS PROUD TO HAVE SISTER city relationships with Aix-en-Provence, France; Cartagena, Colombia; Granada, Spain; Province of Pisa, Italy (emeritus); Quito, Ecuador (emeritus), and La Antigua, Guatemala. The City of Coral Gables International Affairs Coordinating Council (IACC) is a seven-member volunteer advisory board that administers these international relationships on behalf of Coral Gables. I am proud to announce that the City of Coral Gables has been awarded the 2016 Sister Cities International Humanitarian Assistance Award for cities with a population less than 100,000. This award is in recognition of the outstanding exchange work done by the City of Coral Gables to help save the lives of people caught in fire accidents by donating the only hook-and-ladder truck existing in La Antigua, Guatemala. Last April, through the efforts of the IACC and in partnership with the International Affairs Foundation, Coral Gables donated a retired 1988 hook-and-ladder fire truck to its sister city of La Antigua along with other fire equipment such as protective gear and special helmets. The large fire truck was transported from Homestead Air Reserve Base to Guatemala aboard a military cargo jet, thanks to the Denton Program, a Department of Defense transportation initiative that moves humanitarian cargo. A second fire truck from Coral Gables to La Antigua was also donated this summer. Since the beginning of the sister city agreement in 1993, the City of Coral Gables and La Antigua have enjoyed a strong sister-city bond which have included various cultural art and trade exchanges. This latest exchange is just another example of how Coral Gables shares its resources with our sister cities.

Guard Your Heart and Your Assets BY ANGELA BOUSALIS, ESQ.
P
ROTECTING YOURSELF DURING A DIVORCE STARTS before your marriage. Although one shouldn’t anticipate divorce, everyone needs to take certain steps to protect themselves in the event that the worst does indeed occur. There are two types of divorce: contested and uncontested. An uncontested divorce is one where both spouses agree on asset division and child visitation. A contested divorce is one where the spouses do not agree and will need the judge to make decisions for them. A divorce does not have to be completely contested or uncontested – for example, couples are free to agree to just asset division but ask the court to make a parenting plan. There are essentially three key tasks a court has during a contested divorce: asset division, child time sharing, and support (alimony and child support) determination. Most people think a split will be “50/50” and assume that each spouse will receive half of everything they collectively own. This is not quite correct. Florida courts “equitably” – not “equally” – divide property. Equitably means fairly (which in many cases is half and half). However, a court may decide that certain circumstances make it fair that one spouse receives more than half of a couple’s assets, such as a stay-at-home mom who keeps possession of the house to raise three kids alone. Furthermore, the only assets divided by the court are marital assets. Essentially, a marital asset is an asset acquired using the income of either spouse during the marriage. Perhaps you purchased a house before you were married, but rented it out during your marriage. The house itself should be considered a separate and individual asset that will not be divided by the court because Spouse A purchased it before the marriage entirely with Spouse A’s own money. The rental income however, as income produced during the marriage, is a marital asset that must be divided. Something important to watch out for is commingling, which turns individual assets into marital assets. Commingling is most easily explained by using a bank account as an example. Spouse A enters the marriage with a bank account balance of $11,000.00. He puts all his income into the bank account during the marriage. The bank account is now a marital asset that will be split, because spouse A mixed non-marital and marital money. A couple can commingle any asset, even a house, perhaps without realizing it. The only way to combat commingling is to have a prenuptial agreement, also called a premarital agreement. Although a prenuptial agreement can be difficult to bring up to your future spouse during your happy engagement, a premarital agreement is a good idea for any individual who accumulates assets prior to marriage. A prenuptial agreement is a contract between future spouses that defines which assets will forever be considered “separate”/”individual,” and which may be divided in the event of a divorce. A prenuptial agreement can even spell out the terms of your divorce before it even happens, by determining who will take what from the divorce, and whether either party will pay alimony (spousal support) to the other. A good prenuptial agreement can make a divorce smoother, faster, and more amicable for everyone. One of the few things a prenuptial agreement cannot do is determine child support in advance of a marriage. If you have any assets other than simple bank accounts, it is highly recommended that you hire an attorney to protect your rights in a divorce. If you are considering a divorce and marital real estate is an issue, then it is important to find a lawyer that understands not only family law but real estate law as well, because in these cases both are very relevant. Finances are very important in married life, and in-depth discussion about these issues prior to marriage will make your marriage happier and healthier. HEN TALKING ABOUT “PITBULLS” THE MAIN MISconception is that it is a dog breed. The word pitbull refers to a CLASSIFICATION of dogs derived from gene lines created centuries ago with the purpose of producing the perfect blood sport dog, for dog fights against bulls, bears or other dogs. The Fila Brasileiro, Argentinian Dogo and Presa Canario are examples of dog breeds that were also created for the same purpose in mind. This “ pitbull” classification includes any dog with physical characteristics shared by the American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Bulldog. The physical characteristics of these “bull terrier ” breeds vary, and that is why it is so difficult for any person to visually establish what a bull terrier (“pitbull”) dog is. It is known, though, that these bull terrier breeds have strong, powerful jaws that potentially can cause major bite trauma in comparison with the bite from other dogs. However, it is a myth that upon biting the jaws lock, making it impossible to release the prey. It is also known that bull terrier breeds enjoy the company of humans, and in general get along well with other dogs and cats. Sadly, many bull terriers dogs are forced to participate in underground dog fights and act as protection for illegal drug operation sites. Most bull terrier dogs are family pets. In the past, some counties prohibited bull terrier dogs in an attempt to decrease the incidence of dog bites. Research has shown that bull terriers attacks are not the most common, but the most publicized. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) stated that discrimination against specific dog breeds is not an effective way of In the photo is Luna. A bull terrier dog, rescued as a puppy. She had suffered major trauma to the leg leading to loss of decreasing dog bites, since her paw. We are now in the process of creating a custom it provides a false sense of prosthetic, so she can jump and play around like any other dog. security. Any dog has the potential to bite if the right conditions are present. Aggressive dogs are created by irresponsible dog owners. In my personal experience as a veterinarian, in a clinical environment we have to be much more cautious when handling some individuals from other breeds such as Chow-Chows, German Shepherds, some Chihuahuas and even some Cocker Spaniels. We cannot make breed generalizations. In 1990 Florida approved laws against specific breed discrimination, though the Miami-Dade County law prohibiting bull terrier breeds was already established many years prior. Today, Miami-Dade County is the only county in South Florida where the American Pitbull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and ANY dog with “visual characteristics” of these breeds are prohibited. An owner breaking this law will be fined $500.00 and will be ordered to remove the dog from the county. Additionally, any person can anonymously report a dog that they feel has characteristics of the mentioned bull terrier breeds. Breed specific discrimination in the county negatively impacts other facets of life with increases in homeowners insurance, increases in liability insurance, and restrictions when renting a house

All About Pitbulls or apartment. On the other hand, the Miami-Dade Animal Adoption Center offers a great number of dogs for adoption with visual physical characteristics that correlate with bull terrier dogs. They are mixed breed dogs with playful personalities that lack aggressive tendencies. Breed specific discrimination gives society a false sense of security against the danger of dog bites, and does not contribute to control the problem of aggressive dogs. Pet owner education is the key to solving the problem. The three golden rules to always remember: small children should never be left alone with a dog , every dog has the potential to bite if the conditions promote it, and dogs with aggressive tendencies should be kept under control and properly restrained in adequate housing where they don’t represent a danger to the family or the public. can’t keep up with the younger woman. Ladies, you know how that scenario plays out. You feel less connected to your man, and you start to withdraw. The outcome is the deterioration of many happy marriages. With ideal levels a man feels more confident and his role in a relationship is optimal. Decreased energy and stamina: For those who don’t know, testosterone also allows for muscle growth. When Mr. Olympia comes out on stage, he is the product of extremely high doses of testosterone, and a lot of work and discipline. Such high doses are unhealthy. On the other hand, low testosterone leads to loss of muscle mass, as well as inability to put on muscle despite long hours at the gym. There is less energy and a general depressed attitude. This might be seen by some a “he has mellowed out in his old age.” This mellowness could be a red flag for low testosterone. When levels are normalized the clock is reversed. Great gains are seen at the gym with less effort. The body recovers better from strenuous activity, and the chance of injury is decreased. Energy levels increase, and the ability to focus improves. So guys, if you feel like you’re missing something, and think that a younger woman and a convertible will do the trick, think instead that it might be your testosterone level. Get it checked, get it fixed, and enjoy the back nine. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. UYS, THIS ARTICLE IS ALL ABOUT YOU. LADIES, TAKE some notes. Having just turned 52, and after 10 years of optimizing men’s health, I thought I would share some of my insights about the male Midlife Crisis. As men get older many get to a point where they start to act a bit strange. They buy uncomfortable sports cars, they try to flirt with younger women, and they even try to dress and act younger (skinny jeans). Many of their loved ones ask why. The answer is a hot topic that’s getting hotter, testosterone. In a nutshell testosterone is the male hormone. It defines and shapes masculinity. Testosterone is so crucial to masculinity that the male embryo will develop as a female if it does not receive the requisite testosterone input. As we all know Testosterone surges at puberty transforming boys into men. The hormone will peak in the mid-twenties and will begin a steady decline. By 50, many men have half the testosterone in their bodies than they once did when they were 20. There are noticeable changes that come with this drop. I will cover just two of these changes in order of importance (to most men). Decreased sex drive: Testosterone levels correlate well with sex drive. Low levels result in low libido, infrequent erections, and decreased ejaculate volume. This decrease in sex drive is a true relationship killer. Intimacy and sex are crucial components of a healthy relationship. Due to the low testosterone levels, the man feels like his woman isn’t “doing it” for him, he will not seem interested in her, and the novice mistake is thinking that a younger woman -- in a convertible -- might fix the way he feels. The reality is that he finds the convertible uncomfortable, and he
