A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

WE CONSIGN AND SELL
HOMECOMING DRESSES!
ELCOME TO FALL! THOUGH WE MAY STILL BE LOGGING TIME IN THE pool and haven’t quite yet put our grill away (do we ever, really?), make no mistake the fall season is upon us. Living in South Florida may exclude us from fall shopping, the changing of the leaves and apple picking but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the holidays with the best of them. For inspiration we turned to a local expert-- Chef Aaron Janus and his team at STARR Catering. Their creative and modern ideas on taking holiday gatherings to the next level are sure to inspire more than a few readers to turn their home into a haven for friends and family. At the other end of the spectrum, the holidays also kick off a time of giving and of being thankful for who and what we have. This month, our Philanthropist proves a prime example of how we can be inspired by someone’s dedication, caring spirit and empathy for others. On a lighter note, we’re thrilled to spotlight some of the amazing community events coming up in the next month. We encourage everyone to come out and support the fantastic students of Miami Palmetto Senior High at their annual Color Run as well as join forces to support the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Museum Park early next month. And don’t forget to grab your costumes and participate in one of the many fun (and spooky) events going on in Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, the Gables and beyond. From singles to families there really is something for everyone. As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 8, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town. And don’t forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find an online version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,
Dan Bastien

HE SOUTHEAST FLORIDA CHAPTER OF THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION IS inviting Miami-Dade residents to participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s and unite in the movement to reclaim the future for millions. Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Museum Park in Miami, Fla. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk, it is an experience. In addition to the 2.5-mile walk route, participants enjoy on-stage entertainment, an array of booths and honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony.“You help us take a step closer to achieving our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s,” said Ann May, CEO of the Southeast Florida Chapter. “This is a community epidemic and we must tackle it as a community.” The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Nick Silverio BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
A SAFE HAVEN FOR NEWBORNS BACKGROUND A longtime Miami resident (he moved to Miami at four-years-old), Silverio spent much of his life as a businessman, married to his beloved wife Gloria. But after Gloria passed away in a tragic car accident, Silverio channeled his grief into philanthropy, establishing the Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to her memory and spirit. “Gloria and I always believed in giving back, as we did throughout our 32 year marriage, focusing on the most vulnerable-- the youth and the elderly and our church,” says Silverio.
ABOUT A SAFE HAVEN FOR NEWBORNS Though the Silverios were unable to have biological children, they both held a deep love for their extended family of godchildren, nieces and nephews, so placing focus on children’s issues was a natural fit for the foundation. But it was a late-night moment that solidified Silverio’s plans. “One night (in the middle of the night) I was in my kitchen, the lights were dim and I began mindlessly flipping through a magazine,” he says. “My fingers stopped on a page and for some reason I felt compelled to look… It was a very small article about infant abandonment all over the world. Instantly I knew that this was God’s plan for me for the rest of my life.” A Safe Haven for Newborns was born. Based around Florida’s “Safe Haven” law (which allows parents to abandon their unharmed newborns not more than a week old at any safe haven facility recognized by the state laws without fear of prosecution), the organization works statewide on education and outreach with the goal of helping women make the correct decisions for themselves and their newborn.
My favorite quote is by Mark Twain: ‘The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

REACHING OUT The organization has assisted more than 5,000 women in their time of need and works with partners such as fire stations, hospitals, schools and more. “The lifeline of our organization is our 24/7 multilingual confidential helpline which receives seven-to-eight calls per day from all regions of the state,” says Silverio. “ Everyone is helped, no one is ever judged. Our goal is to get the young women help in the community in which she lives, very often resulting in her keeping her baby. Using our statewide resource data base, we assist them as they make their decision in the best interest of their baby and themselves, whether with counseling, parenting, health related issues, adoption or confidentially placing their newborn with a Safe Haven for Newborns.” Silverio also hopes to dispel the myth that it is only the underprivileged or troubled mother who abandons a newborn. “Our experience indicates that this is a tragedy that crosses all categories of age , ethnicity, socioeconomic status,” he says.
A BRIGHT FUTURE Since its inception, A Safe Haven has placed 247 children (243 in Florida, 3 in other states and 1 in Honduras) with forever families. Silverio says his vision for the future is to eradicate infant abuse and abandonment as well as build “Gloria’s House,” a shelter for pregnant girls and women that would offer transitional living, parenting classes and mentorship. And he is well on his way. Over the next year the organization, which is run entirely by volunteers -- including Silverio-- has three fundraising events planned in South Florida, including an October 22 gala event at Jungle Island, where guests will have a chance to meet some of the Safe Haven children and hear their moving testimonials.

Sharonda Butler Stewart, President FemCity Miami
FOR EVERYTHING YOU’RE EXPECTING
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
S
HARONDA BUTLER STEWART MAY NOT SEEM TO HAVE MUCH FREE TIME as founder of Sporty Mommas, LLC and mom to three, but what there is of it sees her working with other business owners across the area as President of FemCity Miami. The business networking community was founded here in Miami in 2010 and today boasts more than 70 chapters across the country. We sat down with Stewart to talk relationships, motivation and supporting other female entrepreneurs.
HOW DID YOU ORIGINALLY BECOME INVOLVED WITH FEMCITY? I was introduced to Femfessionals (now FemCity) in 2013 while attending a blogging workshop in Coral Gables. [Blogger] Nikki Novo was leading the workshop and shared her passion for Femfessionals with the attendees.
WHAT DREW YOU TO THE ORGANIZATION? At the time they were having a promotion and being a new business owner, I was looking for networking opportunities and different ways to grow my business. After joining I learned how powerful women working together and supporting one another can really be. I became a lifetime member and joined the board in 2014.
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT ENTAIL AND HOW DO YOU WORK WITH OTHER CHAPTERS/CITIES? As President of FemCity Miami, I create events that provide opportunities for women to network and collaborate. I also serve as a liaison for our founder Violette De Ayala to help get the mission of FemCity across Miami. We currently have 75 chapters of FemCity across the U.S. and Canada. I love motivating and inspiring women to be their best selves and FemCity gives me that opportunity.
WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE MOST ABOUT FEMCITY MIAMI AND ITS MEMBERS? We are different than most networking groups. We believe in creating relationships and that leads to collaborations in business and also lifelong friendships. The vibe you get when you attend a FemCity Miami event is going to be different. You will want to come back again and again.
HOW DO YOU RECRUIT/FIND MEMBERS AND WHAT’S INVOLVED IN JOINING A CHAPTER? Members are recruited after attending a local event or hearing about it from a friend. We have several levels of memberships. There’s community, business, lifetime and global membership levels. Each membership level has it’s perks but you definitely get more as a business member or higher. FemCity offers business classes, coaching, a platform to showcase your profile and more. The best part is being a part of a network of women doing their thing.
Join FemCity Miami on October 27th as they host “Your health is your true wealth” at Dr. Smood in South Miami. This event will include networking and a special guest panel of women in the health and wellness industry. Learn more at FemCity.com!

Howard Drive Makes A Commitment to Green
BY MONICA SMITH
S
TUDENTS AT HOWARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAVE LEARNED THAT simple tasks can make a big difference, both in the community and for the next generation. From the air they breathe to the technology used, HDE students have made tremendous strides toward sustainability as the school goes green. “Our students understand that their actions have implications for the future and that is what we’ve instilled in them through teaching conservation methods both in the class and through special initiatives,” says HDE Principal Deanna Dalby. “Conservation will help us create a healthier learning environment for our students and families and we’re really emphasizing this in many ways at HDE.” Even the PTA has pledged to go as paperless as possible to help reduce costs and conserve natural resources. This year’s “Welcome Back” packet for parents, which used to be close to 10 printed pages, is now just one page. The re-launched PTA website features several new sections such as a digital store, to avoid the use of paper transactions, as well as many links to forms that can be filled out digitally and emailed. PTA news and the Howard Herald newsletter are also now fully digital, as the organization makes a push for 360-degree coverage through its website, app, Facebook and Twitter accounts. “With the organization’s website re-launch, the need to use paper is just obsolete and wasteful—we’re using push notifications through our app and eblasts,” says PTA President Nicole Connolly. “It’s been a lot of work to reorganize ourselves virtually, but we’re seeing big savings and this allows us to use those funds for other things within the school. According to Connolly, this year, communication and follow-through are the focus for PTA, which strives to reach more families in a myriad of efficient, ecofriendly ways. “We have to meet families where they are, and this means through digital means, right in their hand on their phones,” said Connolly, who’s seen a strong uptick in parent participation, including several new committees. The committees have plans to obtain funds for lush greenery, plants and trees to soften up the campus and provide healthier, clean-air green spaces and gardens areas. At the same time, the students will be able to see hands-on place-based learning through these activities as the school becomes more and more involved in the transformative greening process. “Sustainability is the future and not just in our school. We’re ready to take the challenge, set on making it work for HDE and putting everything into action so that the lessons learned here will last a lifetime,” says Dalby. Understanding that schools have large carbon footprints, the PTA has also designed a new eco-friendly, BPA-free, reusable, metal water bottle to reduce waste and to help raise funds for other worthy campaigns. The PTA’s water bottle can be filled at one of

two new water-bottle filling stations at the school, which count the number of plastic water bottle discards that have been saved from landfills. Since the beginning of school, the counters have risen into the thousands, empowering students to feel like they’re being good global citizens. Astoundingly, a student will produce about 67 pounds of waste each year, says EarthShare, and this can add up to more than 18,000+ pounds of waste produced by an average-sized elementary school in one year. Knowing this, HDE’s Green Patrol club diligently collects recyclable waste from classrooms each morning, to be placed in a recycle bin in the parking lot, along with the mountain of recycled cardboard discards collected each week, and this not only provides a service to teachers, but also helps increase student awareness. “We are all doing our part to reduce, reuse and recycle,” says Arlene Young, HDE’s Media Specialist, who houses a shoe-drop recycling bin in the library to benefit a charity. “Our students won the ‘myOn Challenge’ last year as they read the most digital ebooks in the county, and more and more students are accessing ebooks, which makes our library offerings so much more expansive.” Connolly points out that more than two-thirds of the PTA’s budget last year went toward paper-free digital learning programs and improvements in technology for greater Internet access. “As society modernizes education, undoubtedly, we will all see more technology on the horizon,” says Connolly. “This is where PTA has really helped HDE to meet the demands of tomorrow and help our students and teachers build bright futures as they move up through the grades, sustainably.” But it’s not just about the outdoors with gardens or even indoors with computers and programs, nor is it just about the conservation and recycling at HDE. This year, the school is adding a Wellness Wednesday afterschool snack bar, which will sell fruit smoothies and snacks and allow kids to try green veggies such as kale chips. The funds collected, says Connolly, will go right back into stocking the Wellness Wednesday snack bar. Currently, PTA is looking for community partners to help sponsor the afterschool initiative. “Sustainability is more than recycling, reusing and reducing. It’s a way of life —we’re teaching our students about choices—choices with regard to their environment, health and on how to make a difference,” says Dalby.

N
OW THAT WE HAVE ALL RETURNED TO OUR NORMAL work and school fall schedules, it’s time to discover the wonderful fall programming that the Village of Pinecrest has in store for our community. Pinecrest Gardens and Pinecrest Community Center have each planned a tremendous number of events and programs for adults, seniors, children and families for the coming year. Between the two adjoining facilities, there are cultural, enrichment, educational, fitness and social opportunities. Our Jazz Series kicks off in mid-October, as do the Family and Nature film nights, and children’s theatre. With Halloween comes two of my favorite events. On Sunday, October 30 , noon - 5:00 at Pinecrest Gardens in Howl O Ween, a Pet Costume Contest , pet parade and all around delightful family afternoon, which is not to be missed, as it also benefits Paws4You Rescue. On Halloween, October 31 at 5:00 at Evelyn Greer Park is our Track or Treat, where your children can come trick or treat in a safe and convenient setting in costume and collect a bag full of candy from the local businesses and organizations distributing candy to each child. For the past eight years I have hosted a booth, dressed in a favorite costume, and we now have Pinecrest’s Youth Advisory Council hard at work giving out candy as well. Over the next few months, there are many great programs, lectures, visual arts classes, and cultural events planned. To learn more, check out pinecrestcommunitycenter.com or call 305-284-0900; and pinecrestgardens.org or call 305-669-6990. EADY TO PUT DOWN THE FLOSS? NOT SO FAST! We are still going to recommend daily flossing if you want to proactively care for your teeth and gums. Until the research is done to prove that flossing is effective, our patients will just have to rely on our clinical judgment, and that of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology, that flossing is the best thing for most people to do in order to remove plaque, impacted food, and bacteria from in between the teeth. If you are not familiar with the news and controversy surrounding new questions as to the effectiveness of dental floss, here it is: The Associated Press reported that the government Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion removed or omitted flossing from the latest “Dietary Guidelines.” Apparently, when the AP contacted the ADA for evidence that flossing is effective, the ADA was unable to produce current, conclusive studies in support of flossing. Subsequent to the news article being released and circulated, the ADA has responded stating, “a lack of strong evidence doesn’t equate to a lack of effectiveness. As doctors of oral health, dentists are in the best position to advise their patients on oral hygiene practices because they know their patient’s oral health status and health history.” The association’s statement also took issue with the implication that removing the flossing recommendation from the dietary guidelines meant the government has changed its stance on flossing, saying “this is simply not the case. The Dietary Guidelines Committee made a deliberate decision to focus on food and nutrient intake.” In our practice, we recommend flossing at least once per day, before brushing. Flossing first removes plaque and impacted food or debris from in between the teeth. This allows for the toothbrush bristles and toothpaste to better reach the interdental spaces; thereby making brushing more effective and efficient. For anyone doubting the importance or effectiveness of flossing, perform your own little experiment. If you brush first and then floss, take note of anything you’ve removed with the floss. This additional debris would have been left to foster bacterial growth. Other devices such as “waterpiks” don’t do as good of a job as floss does most of the time; mechanical removal of plaque is needed. There are other tools or adjuncts your doctor may recommend such as a proxabrush or electric toothbrush heads designed to better reach between the teeth. When it comes to preventing dental decay and gum disease, physically removing plaque and impacted food or debris is the ‘name of the game.’ The goal is simply to limit the habitat and nourishment for bacteria, the byproducts of which cause damage to the teeth and inflammation of the gums. In addition to daily brushing and flossing, regular professional dental cleanings and exams are essential. At Smile Miami we are committed to helping you maintain your oral health and achieving the smile you’ve always hoped for. We can be reached at (305) 598-1428 and are always welcoming new patients.

OR REALTOR ROSIE CRUZ-SOTERO, SELLING HOMES COME DOWN TO one thing: customer experience. The former marketing professional (she worked on consumer experience programs for Fortune 500 companies), says approaching real estate from a new angle can drastically change seller—and buyer—attitudes and, more importantly, outcomes. “You can think of it in similar terms as going into a store to buy something,” says Cruz-Sotero. “It’s the same thing with a home in the sense that a buyer needs to be attracted and we can influence their purchasing behavior.” Cruz-Sotero, who grew up in South Florida, sees three main steps in rethinking real estate marketing: pricing the property correctly, attracting the right buyer with smart marketing and finally making the property available for interested buyers. Here’s how Cruz-Sotero is applying her targeted experience to help clients.
Pricing A major sticking point for most sellers, setting the correct price can set the tone for the entire marketing plan of a property, according to Cruz-Sotero. “You only have one chance to create a good impression—and buyers are going to be attracted to a price,” she says. With most buyers having a set budget, pricing a property too high means it will either turn buyers off or not show up on their radar at all. The argument for decreasing the price later is another common misconception, says Cruz-Sotero. “People are looking for what’s hot, what just came on the market. If you decrease the price later you’ve missed out on the first impression… buyers will think ‘What’s wrong with this house- why has it been on the market so long.’” And just as anyone would shop around for the best price on a big-ticket item, home buyers are savvier than ever when it comes to knowing what a property is worth. “Buyers have tech tools at their fingertips,” says Cruz-Sotero. “They will not overpay for something that they don’t think will appraise and will compromise their loan.” On the flip side, while pricing a property fairly will draw buyers, going low may see a seller leaving money on the table.
“What I like about real estate is that, more than anything, I’m able to help sellers and buyers using all of the skills I’ve acquired in my past experience -from contract negotiations to bringing it all together toward a successful transaction. I’m able to think more outside the box.” 30
THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
Marketing “No two homes are the same,” says CruzSotero. “So there should be a difference in marketing plans from home to home.” Cruz-Sotero’s own experience in marketing and consumer experience helps her draw on new ideas for attracting not just any buyer… but the correct buyer. “Much as we may not think about it that way, our house is a product and its audience is going to change according to the product. Think sports cars versus minivans – vastly different audiences.” To find that audience Cruz-Sotero suggests looking at what sets each home apart (often known in marketing circles as “points of differentiation”). Tennis courts or golf courses can draw sports-minded buyers, large yards and green spaces may be appealing to young

families and proximity to hospitals can often be attractive to medical professionals. And thinking outside the proverbial box can extend beyond the confines of South Florida. “Nowadays you can’t discard the global audience.”
Availability For Cruz-Sotero, nothing is more frustrating than finding a buyer interested in a property… and not being able to show it to them. Having a home available via both seller and realtor can often make or break a sale. Cruz-Sotero likens it to calling a restaurant for reservations and having no one answer the phone. She also advises clients to depersonalize the space — allowing buyers to picture themselves in the home. “Having the home show ready everyday is important,” says Cruz-Sotero. Having it clean, tidy and rid of pet-related scents can help the home shine. “Once it is ready you want to guarantee a great buyer experience,” she says. That means candles, bright spaces, even calm music in the background. “The experience helps the buyers envision themselves pleasantly in that space,” she says. “I think that’s important.” Rosie Cruz-Sotero is a Realtor® and Certified Luxury Agent with The Keyes Company, part of the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World. EMBRACE THE BEGINNING OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH TIPS, TRICKS AND TRENDS FROM SOUTH FLORIDA EXPERTS.
FOOD
DRINKS & DÉCOR
Regional Executive Chef for STARR Catering Group Aaron Janus knows how to please a crowd, having worked at legendary Miami venues such as the Versace Mansion, Barton G. and Mar-A-Lago. Today he oversees events for the famed catering group, working with venues including the Perez Art Museum and Ice Palace Film Studios. Here are his picks for the food of the season…
To create a truly memorable event it’s all about the combination of food and atmosphere and this year it’s all about bold décor and bold cocktails. Here’s what’s on tap for holiday 2016 according to STARR Catering Sales Manager Tatiana Cardenas.
DÉCOR AND TABLESCAPES
ROASTED VEGETABLE DISPLAY
SWEET POTATO JAM “I love to use sweet potato Jam during the holiday season,” says the Chef. “It is easily found in your local supermarket and pairs great with a variety of flavors, creating a perfect salty/sweet combo that everyone loves.” His ideas are as simple as adding it to a cheese display (he suggests manchego) or combining it with freshly sliced Granny Smith apples, goat cheese and peppery greens and topping it off with a light lemon vinaigrette. “For a creative take on the traditional pecan pie, add some slices of Sweet potato jam as the bottom layer before adding your pecans and bake until it’s golden and bubbly,” he says.
CARROTS Janus also suggest carrots as a “great seasonal ingredient.” Janus likes to use candied baby carrots with orange, mint and sesame seeds as a healthy party snack or roast them with fresh figs, gorgonzola Dulce and brown butter hazelnuts, to make a great, flavorful fall salad. “For a new take on a classic drink, serve guests carrot juice and rum eggnog,” he suggests. “The idea comes from a Jamaican drink made with carrot juice, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, nutmeg and sugar.” For a more family-friendly beverage try a carrot and pineapple smoothie with a touch of ginger to make a healthier drink that is “full of vitamin K and Vitamin C.”

Metallic geometric shapes are really in and easy to find at your nearest home store. Integrate these fun shapes and other metallic architectural pieces into your traditional garlands and berries for an updated look to the classics. For cocktail/food displays, let the food shine! Use vibrant and interesting shaped foods such as pomegranates as your décor elements.
“Rather than creating the boring grilled veggie platter that’s been around for 50 years, the modern idea is to create a display of individual platters of roasted veggies that pair with their own garnish,” Janus says. Examples? Moroccan Spiced Cauliflower with goat cheese cream, Zaatar spice pesto and fresh herbs like parsley and cilantro; Port wine and citrus roasted beets with candied almonds and Maytag blue cheese topped with fresh citrus zest; or Jumbo asparagus combined with a light lemon vinaigrette, Hollandaise sauce and fresh cracked black pepper.
BRUSSEL SPROUTS CUPS For a fun take on veggies Janus uses the brussels sprout leaves as cups for passed hors d’oeuvres. “First, wash and rinse the sprout and cut just enough of the bottom off to peel the leaves away,” he says. “Continue to cut and peel until you’ve reached the core. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the leaves just till the green is nice and vibrant. Place the leaves ice bath to stop the cooking and drain on a kitchen towel. Now you have a perfect little cup/bowl to hold your favorite party food.
RACLETTE CHEESE According to the Chef, “Adding a unique cheese to your party can add a new level of sophistication.” His suggestions? Melted as a side of cheese for dipping; paired with your favorite bread and charcuterie; served on roasted potatoes and onions; or added among other cheeses and paired with white wine.
Tired of the same old? Here are some new and exciting ideas for adding a little something extra to your party.

BOLD COCKTAILS Use mini spray bottles to give your glasses a spritz before you pour your cocktail. Try orange bitters for an old fashioned or St. Germain for your Prosecco. Want to take it to the next level? Try an absinthe wash on a chilled glass before straining your cocktail in. Garnishes – let your guests top it off themselves with a garnish station. Try blood orange twists, fresh thyme or edible lavender. Add an egg to it! Yes, we’re serious… Pisco Sours and Whiskey Sours are back and they’re delicious! Add one egg white to the rest of your cocktail ingredients – shake without ice (dry shake) for 30 seconds, add ice and vigorously shake for another 30 seconds. Pour in a coupe and watch the egg white become a frothy topping to your cocktail!
SENOR POP
WYNWOOD PARLOR
This Brickell-based startup is taking the michelada to new heights with their custom blends of fruit and spices… in popsicle form. Toss the wine and try a beer station where guests can top off their brew with one of Senor Pop’s four signature (moustache-shaped) paletas to create their own cocktail. senorpop.com
Having just launched earlier this year, Wynwood Parlor is now one of the most in-demand food trucks to hit Miami, bringing smiles to young and old fans with their incredible and incredibly creative ice cream sandwiches. Lucky for locals they also offer catering options so guests can enjoy treats like the Cookie Monster (double chocolate chip cookies with cookies-and-cream ice cream rolled in chocolate chips) and Breakfast Sandwich (maple bacon cookies with butter pecan ice cream, rolled in bacon bits) anytime. wynwoodparlor.com

Parent’s Cheat Sheet: 5 Steps to Solving the Sweets Problem BY MARTHA RESTREPO, SOUTH MIAMI FAMILY DENTAL
T
RICK OR TREAT! HERE COMES HALLOWEEN AND WITH it, a non-stop, cavity-inducing sugar high. We all know that sweets play a harmful role in tooth decay. But this doesn’t mean that your child is destined for a long list of dental problems. Here’s how taking certain steps can prevent tooth decay from hijacking your family’s oral health.
1. Set Rules: Create boundaries that can help protect your child’s oral health without cutting down on the fun, such as: »» A sweets “allowance” that lets your child indulge, but in a limited fashion. »» Frequent drinks of water to wash sugary particles off the surface of his/ her teeth. »» A full meal before dessert to fill up on nutritious foods and help curb cravings. »» “Off-limits” beverages, such as carbonated sodas or fruit juices. 2. Teach Your Child to Choose Wisely: Not all sweets are equally damaging to teeth, so helping your child to make smarter choices can have a big impact on the amount of sugar he or she eats. Prolonged sucking on hard candies, for instance, is one of the most harmful ways to satisfy a sweet tooth because of lengthy, direct exposure of the tooth’s surface to concentrated sugar. Likewise, sticky foods that contain ingredients such as caramel or toffee are more likely to get lodged in between teeth, and chewing on them may even result in a lost filling. When possible, steer your child towards cakes and cookies instead. 3. Bring Something Nutritious: Make it easy for your child to opt for something nutritious by packing a healthy alternative. Cheese, for example, is calcium-rich and can help remineralize tooth enamel. An apple is another tooth-healthy option when chewed, its high fiber content makes it an excellent “plaque scrubber.” Even sugar-free gum can do the trick if it contains xylitol, which can help prevent the growth of oral bacteria. 4. Have Your Child Brush and Floss As Soon As Possible: If you’re always on the go, it may be worth packing a travel-sized toothbrush, but if your child forgets to brush amidst all the excitement, make sure he or she does so upon returning home. Flossing is just as critical. At minimum, your child should be brushing and flossing twice a day, but don’t hesitate to add another round of cleaning if he or she has had a particularly rich meal. 5. See The Dentist: In addition to receiving a professional cleaning, your child’s dentist can look for developing decay and gum disease, and treat it before it becomes more serious. He or she can also help ensure your child is practicing the correct brushing and flossing techniques, and provide teeth additional protection in the form of dental sealants, if need be.
CANDIES: A delicious treat that threatens your teeth! To avoid tooth decay, visit your dentist at least twice a year for a professional cleaning, and early detection of potential dental problems.

Building Relationships Through Music BY PENNY DANIELS
M
USIC. IT’S ALL AROUND US AS WE START THE FALL SEASON - FOOTBALL games, NASCAR races, baseball games. Whether it’s the National Anthem, half-time shows, or team fight songs, all of us either sing, clap our hands, tap our feet, dance to the beat, or listen quietly. Music helps form our attitudes and moods. If the National Anthem, is playing our mood is more of a serious nature. If the fight song is playing, our attitude is more playful and excited. There is no substitute for music as it relates to personal growth and development. With this in mind, why don’t more children learn music in the school setting? And if they join the band in elementary or middle school, why do so many drop their study of music within the first two years? Why don’t adults join a choir or a band? Are we aware of the positive benefits of learning music? There is far more to playing in a band than purchasing an instrument, taking private lessons, adding music class to the school schedule, and rehearsing for a concert. It gives us a roadmap for success; success in all avenues of life. The learned skills needed to excel in music are transferable to every academic subject and every phase of life. The character values we seek in leadership roles, are taught in band. Music shapes the lives of our “leaders of tomorrow” through the ethical habits they establish each day in rehearsal. Learning music embraces all forms of cognitive learning. It teaches us the value of teamwork and how to be an effective team player, nourishes the love of learning, encourages cultural awareness, promotes cooperative flexibility, develops self-discipline, extends understanding, and helps us form friendships that last a lifetime. There is amazing satisfaction in coming together as a team for a common goal. With music, teamwork is very different from that of a sports team, where the goal is to defeat opponents in games. The teamwork in music is about individual and group self-improvement, competition, hard work, and friendships. When you are a member of a band, choir, or musical group, you share experiences with others that you may not have otherwise had the opportunity. You are frequently building new relationships. If your job moves you to another state, you can join another band or group, and start building new friendships. Music is a wonderful bridge between states. Music is a place for everyone … and is considered a universal language. It’s not too late. Visit your local music store, receive advice from an expert, and begin building relationships through music today! Musicians Discount Center in Miami help you find the instrument that suits you and your needs. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. Time in the Market, What’s Your Home’s Equity? BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
T
HE FOURTH QUARTER IS HERE AND WITH IT THE LAST wave of buyers for the year. It’s the time when corporate relocations and new arrivals into town are looking for their home in time to get the tax benefit it brings for this fiscal year. It’s also when the locals are selling in order to move to the right size home. One common reason to not list your home in the fourth quarter is that guests will arrive for the holidays and the home should be in mint condition. So, if you still want to be in your new home before the end of the year, ask your agent to not have any showings on the days where you’ll have guests. No reason to put off your move. You may have to change plans on where to spend Thanksgiving though, because homes that are priced at fair market value are selling quickly, usually within 60 days in our market. According to Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist of the National Association of Realtors “The primary driver in the increase in sales is more homeowners realizing the equity they’ve accumulated in recent years and finally deciding to trade-up or downsize”. There is positive equity nationwide with 92 percent of the homes. Further, there is “significant equity” in 74 percent of the homes in The United States. Those are homes that have greater than 20 percent equity according to Fannie Mae & CoreLogic.
The Housing Market Is Finally Starting to Look Healthy “It has been an excruciatingly long time coming, but the housing sector in the United States is finally getting healthy. Thank millennials and thank homebuilders who are starting to produce more of the starter houses young people demand.”
New York Times Many owners do not realize how much equity has built up and are holding back on moving because of that perception. The median years of homeowner tenure before moving has risen from six to 9+ years in the country (Forbes). This is creating a natural pent-up seller demand and the trend seems to have settled at 9+ years. How long have you been living at your current home? The question really is where do you want to live next? The market is stable and you should be able to find what you’re looking for next. Have house prices surpassed their pre-2008 peak? Not in Florida where we still are 18 percent below that mark. California is 6 percent below and New York is at 3 percent below. There is some room to grow and it looks like we’ve leveled off on our property appreciation. A Home Price Expectation Survey done in 3rd quarter of 2016 projects an 18.7 percent Cumulative House Appreciation by 2020. There is reason to celebrate the stability in the market and the time that you have been in the market. Many of us have enjoyed an increase in equity and are now in position to reap the rewards of hanging in there when the times were tough. Not that long ago, was it? You can breathe easily and make decisions on where to move to with a reasonable expectation to get that accomplished before years’ end. Happy fourth quarter to you! N ESCAPE TO WHIDBEY ISLAND IS SOMETHING YOU DEFINITELY WANT on your bucket list. As I drove across Deception Pass Bridge, I knew that the next couple of days were going to be a true respite. I really wished I had had time to stop and walk the bridge or at least take the stairs that led to some trails underneath but my time was limited and there was so much I wanted to see. I pulled into the second oldest town in Washington, Coupeville, and felt like I had walked into a Norman Rockwell painting. Coupeville sits on the shores of Penn Cove and offers a mix of quaint shops and restaurants. I came to rest on the patio of Front Street Grill where I could see Mt. Baker and sip on wine. There was no question as to what I would order off the menu, Penn Cove mussels. Fabulous! I stopped in at the ice cream shop and then walked down to the pier and watched the boats come in. I had heard so much about Greenbank Farm that I made that my next stop. The farm is comprised of art galleries, a garden and pond, a winery (where, I have to admit, I partook of a wine tasting) and beautiful serene places to picnic. You can actually go to the cheese and wine shop, grab a few things and sit in the field and just enjoy the stillness of it all. My favorite place was Whidbey Pies. All the pies are handmade and it took me quite a while to decide but the winner was the Loganberry with a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream. As I rolled out to my car, I asked directions to Ebey’s Landing National Historic Preserve where I knew I could burn off a few calories. When I saw Ebey’s Landing, I knew I had found paradise. It was breathtaking and I stared in awe at the bluffs meeting the shores of Penn Cove, contrasting with the beauty of the forests and the rocky coast. The reserve is an active farming community with three state parks to explore by hiking or biking. Situated on the reserve is Admiralty Head Lighthouse and Fort Casey. I toured the lighthouse and walked around Fort Casey for a couple hours just wondering what it would be like to have lived here. I scrambled among the ruins and then trekked to the beach where I found gigantic piles of driftwood along the shore. I plopped down on a rock and watched the sunset before heading to the Saratoga Inn. Let me put this simply, there is no other place to even think of staying than here. The inn’s front porch was o inviting, with its rocking chairs and incredible view of the Cascade Mountains and Saratoga Passage. My room had a gas fireplace and king size bed with a little friend to welcome me, a teddy bear. The bathroom had a clawfoot tub, which I promptly filled up. After a leisurely bath, I dressed and made my way to Prima Bistro, a popular gathering place. The deck was so pleasant, even with a summer chill, due to strategically placed heaters, and The view of the passage was beautiful as the night sky shone on it making it glisten. The next day I went to Firehouse Studio and blew my own glass bowl. Check that off my bucket list. I drove the 8.5-mile Langley Loop and marveled how the cyclists could actually bike it. The scenery was stunning. I saw an eagle in a field and deer grazing by the road. I grabbed a map of the art trail and stopped at some of the most interesting galleries before heading onto the wine trail. Each winery offered a different experience and equally as good as the one before. I wanted my last stop to be the Captain Whidbey Inn, which sits on the shore of Penn Cove. The inn is more than 100 years old and as I crossed the threshold, I was staring at its two massive fireplaces and exposed log walls; the ambience was beyond what I expected. I ordered a glass of wine at the Tavern bar and found a seat by the window so I could enjoy my last few hours in this lost world. Laser Center of Miami & Spa Celebrates 10 Years
F
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
OR MOST WOMEN IN SOUTH FLORIDA (AND YES, EVEN BEYOND), A CONversation about hair removal is as common as talking about the weather. But, according to Laser Center of Miami & Spa owner Myriam Barrero, and partner, Maggie Avila, it hasn’t always been that way. While electrolysis treatments were the norm for hair removal in the early 80s, the conversation surrounding it was taboo. “No one wanted anyone to know they were having any hair removal procedure,” says Barrero. With the advancement of technology came laser hair removal and, in the early 90s, Barrero brought one of the first laser hair removal devices to Miami. As the times changed, so did views on hair removal, making it not only more desirable but quite common. Barrero and Avila initiated their venture with only one treatment room in a medical office, expanding and growing before settling into a self-standing facility on Sunset Drive. Today, Barrero and her highly-trained staff offer patients from around the world everything from laser hair removal and Hydrafacials to vein treatments and the newly-popular CoolSculpting. But hair removal remains Ms. Barrero’s passion; one she speaks of with a mix of authority, experience, and excitement as well as responsibility to her patients. “We are here for our patients”, she says. “We care and want them to be happy.”

For most of those patients the process begins with a complimentary consultation. A specialist will discuss medical history, allergies, and any medications that may affect the treatment. A patch test is performed to make sure there are no reactions, waiting a full 24 hours before starting the treatment. Barrero says there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to a hair removal plan. “It depends on many factors such as the pigment and melanin of the hair being removed.” Treatments usually span multiple visits, spaced out initially over five to six week intervals. Unlike other centers, Laser Center of Miami & Spa is one of the few facilities that does not require pre-payments, contracts, or commitments. Patients are also always able to see the same specialist, making it a very personal experience. The center prides itself on offering state-of-the-
art machines featuring a C.D.C. spray that helps avoid discomfort. The center also has a medical director on-staff to address any questions or concerns, though post-treatment is usually as simple as staying out of the sun. Once the process is completed the skin looks amazing, says Barrero. “You cannot even tell you ever had any hair.” Aside from hair removal, Laser Center of Miami & Spa also offers patients traditional spa treatments such as facials and massage, but at the center of the company’s mission is always a dedication to their patients and concentration on excellence in customer service. “Our goal is to do the right thing by our patients,” says Ms. Barrero. “Money has never been my goal. We believe that if you do the right thing and you do it with love, success will follow.”
& Spa Laser Center of Miami & Spa is located at 9280 Sunset Drive, Suite 102, Miami, FL 33173. For more information, please call 305-270-3925 or visit LaserCenterofMiami.com.

BUILT ON TRUST M iami can boast many things. Sunshine, palm trees, cultural arts, and, according to Cisca Real Estate Managing Broker and Chief Legal Officer Bryan Levy, one more thing: a truly unique real estate market. “There are a lot of creative transactions going on in the marketplace,” says Levy. “That’s one reason having a real estate agent with my experience helps clients.” Levy, who brings almost two decades of experience as a real estate attorney, opened the real estate brokerage Cisca Real Estate in 2009 after noticing a growing need for real estate guidance in clients who came to his firm, Balleste & Levy, PA, and to that of his good friend Frank Balleste, CEO of Cisca Construction. “It made sense for us to open up the real estate company,” says Levy, who grew up as a close family friend to Balleste. “What we’ve seen is a lot of times where an agent may not represent clients in all aspects of the real estate transaction or may have them sign listings or contracts without the client being appropriately consulted. As such, it seemed like a natural progression to provide the realty services.” Today, Cisca Real Estate works with buyers and sellers in both residential and commercial capacities, handling everything from sales, contracts and closings to advice and guidance to reach clients’ goals. Rather than just focusing on a specific area of South Florida,
the Cisca Team focuses on client relationships, offering what they call “boutique services” from Miami to West Palm Beach and beyond. “It’s not just servicing a certain area, or specific services for here or there. We can help the client with anything that’s going on with their real estate holdings,” Levy says. That means protecting clients’ interests and avoiding the risk that comes with not being represented by the right agent. As Levy says, “questionable real estate transactions” are still occurring. “People are still being taken advantage of, especially if their home is upside down or in distress,” he adds. Levy also works hard to help clients protect their finances and future, whether that means placing properties under a trust or LLC or sitting down for a guidance talk with potential clients. “You have to protect your assets – everything you’ve worked hard for,” he advises. To that end, Levy always offers potential clients a strategy consultation when needed. “They tell me what they’re trying to do and I’ll give them my thoughts on all aspects of the transaction, not just the purchase or sale,” he says. Levy’s attention to detail and dedication to honest advice has gained him a loyal stable of clients who have stayed with the attorney since his early days and have continued to refer him business. “When a client comes to me they feel secure and protected,” he says. “I’m going to be completely transparent, whether it’s telling you the true
value of your home, how to best sell your home, or how to otherwise protect your assets.” His team, as well, brings more than 40 years of experience in the South Florida real estate market and takes pride in making itself available to clients no matter how large or small the request, creating a comfort level that Levy says separates them from other companies. “We like to have an open platform for the client to be able to ask questions and make sure they feel comfortable,” he says. “Trust is born from treating clients honestly and with transparency.” The Cisca Team’s unique blend of real estate, law, and construction under one roof continues to expand their geographical and client base, allowing them to service everyone from high-end residential real estate buyers to estate sellers and commercial clients looking for buildings or office space. “We are a team,” explains Levy. “We work together with our clientele through every step of the real estate process to deliver thorough, consistent, and dependable results. Once you walk through our doors, you become a member of the Cisca Team.”

1. Avoid dangerous pet costumes. Only dress up your pet if he/she tolerates and enjoys it. Avoid any costume that limits their field of vision or that has loose strings, feathers, or bells. Avoid flammable materials and outfits that are tight or uncomfortable. If your dog is a chewer or eats foreign objects (listen to this one, labrador owners), then skip the costume. If you make the costume yourself, be sure that it is a safe design and allows for proper movement. 2. Choose decorations that are safe. Avoid using real candles for decoration to prevent burned whiskers, corneas, and other body parts. Too commonly candles are placed on the ground inside interesting containers, such as pumpkins, that are too attractive and invite dogs and cats to smell and investigate, resulting in major burns. Also skip the fake spiderwebs if there are cats in the household. Cats are fond of playing with strings and it is easy for them to swallow these plastic strings leading to intestinal blockage and, likely, emergency surgery. 3. Be cautious opening doors repeatedly. Frequent knocking at the door by kids looking for candy can be an invitation for fast dogs and cats to escape and get lost, or worse, been hit by a car. 4. Keep candy out of your pet’s reach. Unintentional poisoning from eating candy that contains ingredients that are toxic to pets and gastrointestinal problems due to the ingestion of excess candy, are perhaps the most common emergencies seen on Halloween night. If your pet is known for stealing snacks from tables and counters, avoid chocolates (especially the darker type), raisins, and any candy with the sweetener xylitol. The theobromine in chocolate will lead to tachycardia, incoordination, vomiting, diarrhea, and other serious symptoms that require treatment. The low calorie sweetener xylitol can lead to acute liver failure. Ingestion of raisins can cause acute kidney failure in dogs. Lets not forget that most dogs will also eat the wrappers and even the lollipop sticks. These foreign, non-digestible materials, commonly cause blockage of the intestines and stomach, requiring emergency surgery. 5. Keep your anxious pet in a quiet room with the door closed. Nervous pets are more prone to anxiety attacks from loud, unfamiliar noises, frequent door knocking, and scary costumes. Older dogs and cats with cardiac disease are especially sensitive to these kinds of stimuli. Keeping your nervous pet away from these dangers will not only protect them from acute medical conditions such as heart attacks, but will also protect people, especially children, from unexpected bites caused by fear. When planning for a fun Halloween night, keep your pet’s safety in mind. A worry-free celebration is always more enjoyable, and your pet will appreciate a special safe, cozy room with her/his favorite snack to munch on during this holiday.
We would like to welcome DR. ARLENE JIMENEZ to Galloway Veterinary Hospital

E ALL HAVE THEM, THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT LEAVE us feeling drained, frustrated and off balance. They come in the form of family, spouses, friends and coworkers. Even when we recognize what they are doing to us, we feel confused as to how to handle them. Well, let me shed some light on this energy sucking human being. A toxic relationship will do the following:
»» »» »» »» »» »» »»
Keep you stuck and prevent your progress Drain your energy and life from you Rob you of joy and excitement Make you begin to doubt yourself and your abilities Your self-esteem is greatly affected You blame yourself for their behavior It can alter your personality
Do you see any or all of these traits in someone in your life? Personally or professionally? If so, please read on. The first step is to see them for what and who they are; they are people who are afraid of rejection and abandonment. The second step is to remove yourself for awhile and clear your head; you will not be able to think clearly if you are in the midst of a toxic relationship. Last, decide if this is a relationship you want to remain in, whether it is work, family or friends. If you decide to stay then you will have to learn to empower yourself. Remember that toxic personalities will try to control as many areas in your life as you allow them to. They can do this in two ways, an out and out demand or the more subtle guilt and shame approach.
Here are some things that will throw you back into the driver’s seat.

»» You can only change yourself, your behavior and your reaction to the toxic person. Empower your position by setting boundaries. »» Understand that as you attempt to regain your control, the toxic person will try to reassert his/her dominance and control, they will not be open to change. »» Consistency is very important. Plot your course and stick to it. »» Communicate that the relationship is going to change. Don’t have this conversation while in a heated debate and don’t list all of your expectations; only the most important ones. »» Do not defend or debate your position; only state it and stop talking. Ex: I will not be criticized any longer (period) don’t add because it’s disrespectful or hurts my feelings. »» Your opinion counts. If a toxic person makes a devaluing comment to you, calmly and simply state your opinion, don’t compromise or bargain, do not engage or fight back. »» Don’t ever apologize for having your own opinion. »» Keep your voice low and speak slow and deliberate. »» Don’t fall into their trap of manipulation. Stand your ground. You know the saying, “Pick your battles”? Well, with a toxic person, everything is a battle. At the end of the day, your mental health and well-being is paramount and dealing with a toxic person can put a strain on both. If they think that your personal or professional relationship is a game, then show them how it’s played.

Benefits of Freeze Dried Dog Food vs. Raw Diet BY TAMI MAIER
M
LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
OST DOG OWNERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH KIBBLE AND CANNED FOODS but there are other choices when it comes to buying your dog’s food. One of them is freeze dried food. Freeze dried dog food is only a small segment of the dog food market and it is primarily used by pet food makers who want to include a raw food, usually made without preservatives, that is freeze dried as soon as it’s made. Freeze dried foods are especially popular with dog owners who feed a raw diet since the food is freeze dried in a raw state.
Benefits of a Raw Diet Many people who feed raw diets believe that they are healthier for their dogs and that they are more like what their dogs would eat in the wild. They believe these diets provide the following benefits to their dogs: »» Better skin and coats »» Whiter teeth »» Fresher breath »» Better weight and condition »» Improved digestion »» Less likelihood of allergies »» Smaller, less smelly stools However, feeding raw foods can be messy and time-consuming if you have to gather all the ingredients yourself and try to balance your dog’s nutritional needs. A dog eating a raw diet tends to get the raw food all over his face, body, and the area where he eats. Handling raw foods poses some bacterial risks for humans, too, unless very good food safety measures are taken. Most dogs can eat the soft bones in raw food, but some bones need to be ground or used only as recreational bones. Even raw frozen diets available from pet food makers have some of these same drawbacks.
The Advantages of Freeze Dried This is where a freeze dried diet can be useful. It has the ease and convenience of kibble yet it’s comprised of the same ingredients as a raw diet. The food is not messy to feed so your dog doesn’t get it all over himself or the area where you feed him. Ideally, the food will already be nutritionally balanced so you don’t have to spend time choosing the ingredients or making the food yourself. Freeze drying kills the bacteria that sometimes poses a problem with raw foods. And the bones in the freeze dried food are already ground. You can still give your dog bones for recreational chewing to help keep his teeth clean. Plus, freeze dried pet foods have a long life. If you keep them in their packaging, they can last a long time until you are ready to rehydrate them and feed them. No additional refrigeration or freezing is required. You can store them in a kitchen cabinet or take them with you when you travel with your dog. Again, when you are selecting a freeze dried product for your dog, make sure that you choose a food that is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage and not a product that is intended to be used as a supplement — unless you wish to add other foods to your dog’s diet and try to balance it yourself. Freeze dried foods are often a good alternative for people who like to feed a raw diet. Your dog gets the same nutritional benefits of eating raw without the mess. The foods are nutritionally balanced, easy to handle and store, plus they keep a long time. Freeze dried foods can be a good gateway product if you are thinking of feeding a raw diet. Stop by our tent at the Pinecrest Farmers Market and we will gladly give you a sample of our new Freeze dried Dog Food.. Obstacles that would be cemented into our State's Constitution if we vote yes. These obstacles are only present in four states, Florida, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Oklahoma. Other states, like California and New Jersey, have removed similar barriers. They have advanced the solar production in their states by a large margin leaving the Sunshine State at number 17 in the nation for solar production. Consumers in states like California enjoy the benefits of lower cost solar installations and the environmental benefits of renewable energy.
THIS COMING NOVEMBER, AMENDMENT ONE will be introduced on the ballot. Disguised as a pro-solar move, Amendment One has the power to bulldoze the solar revolution in its tracks. Funded by three major Utility companies in Florida, Amendment One seeks to control how Floridians use and install solar on their properties. If passed, solar users would be forced to buy power from a utility company and only sell back to that utility company at rates decided by the very same utility company. FPL, Duke, and Tampa Electric have spent nearly 21 million dollars to promote Amendment One. Clearly they want the amendment to pass, and they want to continue to profit from solar customers' lack of choices. Amendment One ensures Florida won't see the billions of dollars in investment capital that the solar industry has brought to other states. Floridians are asked to pass Amendment One. "Rights of electricity consumers regarding solar energy choice" At first glance this sounds like it is a great idea and should be supported in order to support solar power generation. This is far from the truth. Amendment One cements into the constitution barriers now in place to prohibit the solar industry from expanding in the Sunshine State. Amendment One is backed by the Investor owned utility companies. They have invested over $21 million dollars to convince you that we need this amendment to protect the consumer from unjust cost, and safety concerns. The truth is that Amendment One is designed to protect the utility company's hold on the Florida consumer, never giving you a choice. This protects their pockets from open market competition that will drive the price of energy down. It takes the benefits away from you, the consumer. The utility companies don't want you to know the truth. Amendment One does nothing to change current law. Our current law already guarantees your right to renewable energy. Current law also has severe obstacles in place the limit the growth of the solar industry.
Amendment One will place barriers on the Florida Constitution, limiting the free market access and giving solar users only one option, the utility company. Amendment One says, "ESTABLISHMENT OF CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. Electricity consumers have the right to own or lease solar equipment installed on their property to generate electricity for their own use." This is misleading because you as a consumer already have a constitutional right under Florida Statute. The Solar Rights Act (CA Civil Code 714), enacted in 1978 guarantees you the right to install solar panels. The real confusion here is the final four words in the above sentence."...for their own use." When you limit the solar rights of a homeowner to their own use you prohibit the forces of free market to take effect. Free market is the force that benefits consumers the most, when you prohibit free market you allow the utility companies to thrive in a monopoly environment. "A wolf in sheep's clothing" is how Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente described this Amendment. Those final four words prohibit you, or anyone in Florida from installing renewable energy (solar or wind) except to replace their own use. To put it very clearly you must purchase your panels up front. You cannot produce any excess and sell it on the open market. These four words severely inhibit the growth of this industry as businesses will not be allow to install solar panels produce electricity and compete with the utility companies for your business. In States where the laws have changed and favorable legislation has passed, the consumers enjoy lower rates and environmental benefits. If the market was open, and similar competition was allowed in Florida, you as the consumer would benefit. Imagine if you could

buy electricity from FPL, or perhaps Google or even your local solar provider. They all had to compete to offer you the best deal. Now you control the market. The utility companies argue that they cannot allow free market for safety reasons. They argue that the Solar Industry is unregulated and therefore would cause a threat to the power grid. They want you to believe this. The truth is that the solar industry is one of the highest regulated industries in the nation. In Florida, every solar system has to be certified by the state through FSEC, must be designed by a licensed professional engineer, and permitted by the local building department in your municipality. That is three layers of protection. The second and most dangerous part of this amendment is that it would allow the Utility companies to decide the rates that a solar customer pays. "RETENTION OF STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL ABILITIES. State and local governments shall retain their abilities to protect consumer rights and public health, safety and welfare, and to ensure that consumers who do not choose to install solar are not required to subsidize the costs of backup power and electric grid access to those who do." Utility companies are trying to create the impression that a customer who installs solar is placing a financial burden on homeowners who do not install solar. The argument is that solar customers cost the utility company money, so other customers now see increased rates. This is just unrealistic and untrue. Let's break down this information in terms of real life. You as the consumer are required to pay for the utility company's cost of producing the electricity. For example, the Tampa area consumers had to pay $5.3 billion dollars for the utility company to build the Tampa area Nuclear reactors. These reactors have never produced any electricity, but the consumers have to pay for it up front. Likewise, in the Miami market, FPL has asked that we pay $7.8 billion dollars for new nuclear reactors in the Turkey Point Facility. It is important to think about the added financial responsibility of cleaning up the canal systems and the environmental damage done to Biscayne Bay that no money can reverse. The truth is, that unlike expensive facilities that produce nothing and cost millions, it
costs you nothing when your neighbor decides to install a solar system. In fact, nationally it has been proven that rooftop solar can save the local utility companies millions in infrastructure upgrades if they would only embrace and encourage the technology. Imagine that every new housing development installed solar on every roof instead of having to invest thousands of dollars in tax money for the utility to upgrade its infrastructure. This means new lines, transformers, transfer stations, and power generation plants. The average home can run on solar for less than ten dollars a month. Every appliance, light and outlet works exactly as it did before. Think about the savings in infrastructure alone if expensive, tax costly power plants were replaced with solar homes across Miami. We would produce more than enough power, and it would be safer and cleaner energy. The solar industry is growing across America, creating thousands of high paying clean energy jobs. Please join me and thousands of other Floridians in Voting NO on Amendment One and help promote that growth in the Sunshine State. Amendment One is opposed by the majority of local municipal leaders, see what they have to say. "Our efforts to expand access to Solar and reduce the cost were thwarted by FPL and other investor utilities that want a monopoly on the sun. Amendment 1 which is on the November ballot would place permanent barriers to solar expansion in our constitution. The utilities have spent over $21 million dollars to pursue their own ballot effort and mislead the public. If you want to see solar expand in Florida vote No on Amendment 1, said Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner. As Floridians, we are faced with a tremendous responsibility to vote this coming November. The ballot presents Amendment One to the people of the sunshine state, and we must not be fooled. Amendment One has the power to change the future for solar energy, and that change is not reversible. We must vote no in November because there will not be a second chance. Billion-dollar utility companies cannot be allowed to decide Florida's solar future.

2 white or yellow onions diced 1 jalapeno diced 4 cloves of garlic diced 1 tsp salt & pepper 5 springs of thyme 1 cup white wine of your choice 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups coconut milk 1 dozen Florida clams
In a medium to large pan sauté the onions, jalapeno, garlic, thyme, salt & pepper with the olive oil and white wine until the ingredients are soft and aromatic. In a blender or food processor take the sautéed ingredients and puree them. Once they are purred strain them and discard the pulp (chunks) but be sure to keep the liquid. Pour the remaining liquid back into the pan. Now add the coconut milk and your clams. Bring everything to a simmer. It should take about 8-10 minutes for the clams to cook. You’ll know they are ready when they pop open. These clams are excellent served in a bowl with a piece of crusty bread to soak up the delicious coconut sauce however; they are also great served over linguini. In addition the recipe calls for Florida clams. You can use little necks or middle necks or when available Sunray clams are excellent as well. If you have any questions regarding the selection of clams you can always ask one of our seafood experts behind the counter. Recipe by: Generric Kyles Kitchen Manager Golden Rule Seafood

OTOX AND OTHER COSMETIC NEUROTOXINS CAUSE temporary paralysis of the forehead and brow muscles, and improve the appearance of wrinkles. Most people don’t know that this wonderful adjunct to cosmetic surgery can make drooping eyelids worse. One of the most frequent complaints I hear from women as they age is that putting on eye shadow becomes more and more of a challenge. As the years pass the skin of the upper lids becomes more redundant, creating a formidable task. Different application techniques have been tried unsuccessfully, the pull, the stretch, even wishing for a third hand. The caking and smudging that results can get you a part on “The Walking Dead.” The problem is real, and it continues to progress. What can you do? Here is an example: You are a smart, cosmopolitan woman, and want to fight the aging battle. Immediately you turn to the “non-surgical” miracle. Botox, Dysport or whatever toxin du jour is available. You grab your Groupon voucher and run to your favorite dermatologist, spa, dentist, internist, OB/GYN, hairdresser, friend of a friend... just to get the magic cure. Just a few “lunchtime injections” and Voila! Your forehead is so smooth that you could win the world poker championship, but your eyelids are now worse than ever. And your paralyzed forehead can’t raise your brows, even if you were reading the winning Lotto ticket. So you run back to your “expert” and explain the problem. Their usual answers follow, “mmm”, “I think you’re exaggerating,” “It will settle in a few days,” “but you look great!,” the friend of a friend “left town.” Fortunately the effects of this mistake wear off in about three to four months, and you’re back to square one. The reality is that most of these “experts” will not analyze your eyelid problem properly, and will actually cause more harm than good. So be smart. From a plastic surgeon’s perspective the easiest and most successful solution to the problem is the upper lid rejuvenation, also known in the industry as an upper lid “blepharoplasty.” The word “blepharoplasty” comes from the Greek words “blepharon,” meaning eyelid, and “plasty” meaning to change or mold. This is a simple, minimally invasive procedure that takes about thirty minutes to perform. There is no need for general anesthesia. The results are beautiful rejuvenated eyelids that can tolerate the potential negative effects of Botox. It is relatively inexpensive, painless, and the recovery time is minimal. Some cold compresses, dark glasses for a few days and you’re back to makeup in a week. Before you make a costly mistake go see a real expert with the skill set to properly analyze your issues and help you achieve the results you want. Then your forehead, and eye shadow, can look great when you win that poker championship.
Offer is valid for up to a half acre. New customers only.
