So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen

production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? POKEBAO TO OPEN ON GIRALDA AVENUE This fall an exciting new chef-driven, fast-casual eatery is coming to Coral Gables’ evolving Giralda Avenue: PokéBao by chef/owner Daniel Bouza. For the concept, slated to open November, Bouza – formerly of Makoto in Bal Harbour – will evoke the flavors, texture and techniques he has spent years honing. As Coral Gables undergoes the Gables Streetscape project, PokéBao adds another layer to Coral Gables’ food scene. Inspired by a tiny surf shack in Lana’i that served poké bowls to guests lining up around the block, Bouza had the idea to serve the cubed fish salad in a chef-driven, fast-casual environment. An afternoon making gua bao at a friend’s house made him further realize that bao buns would be the perfect complement to poké. “Poké and gua bao are traditional items ripe for interpretation and innovation,” says Bouza. “As a chef with a long history of making both dishes, I knew they would make a perfect pair and that a fast-casual concept was ideal for this style of cooking.”

Lotus House Breaks Ground on State of the Art Facility in Miami’s Overtown BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

NE OF MIAMI’S MOST IMPACTFUL NONprofits has taken a major step forward in the quest to eliminate homelessness from city streets. Lotus House, Miami’s only organization exclusively dedicated to providing supportive shelter for homeless women, youth and children, has broken ground on a new facility that will increase its total capacity from 250 to 490 guests. Construction of the project, named “Lotus Village,” will last approximately 15 months, with an anticipated completion date in late 2017. Development of Lotus Village kicked-off at a September 16 groundbreaking ceremony at the project site in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood, where more than 300 members of the community attended as well as several Lotus House alumni who have transitioned to homes outside the shelter system and many children who were newborns at Lotus House. Other attendees included City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, Miami Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, Miami-Dade Homeless Trust Chairman Ron Book, and Miami-Dade County Deputy Mayor Russell Benford. “Lotus Village will be a role model for how cities can bring an end to homelessness with enriched shelter and support services that address the needs of the most fragile among us,” says Lotus House founder Constance Collins. “Our groundbreaking is a dream come true and an example of how collaboration can

bring real change to a community. This day wouldn’t be possible without the help of our friends and sponsors. It truly takes a village. My hope is that the entire Miami community will support our cause by joining our sustainability campaign.” The start of construction marks the launch of Lotus Endowment Fund’s campaign to raise $25 million in donations, grants and corporate gifts to ensure the shelter’s long-term sustainability. Bank of America, a long-time supporter of Lotus House, announced a $250,000 pledge for operational and programmatic support at the new shelter. This gift builds on a long partnership that includes volunteerism, Board service and financial support since 2008, including a $200,000 capacity building grant awarded to Lotus House in 2011 through the Bank of America Neighborhood Builder program. “Bank of America is committed to helping create economic stability for families and thriving communities,” said Gene Schaefer, Miami market president, Bank of America. “Lotus Village will expand the reach, and related impact, doubling the number of homeless women, youth and children served as well as provide needed services to the overall Overtown community.” Once completed, Lotus Village will be home to supportive services and amenities for special needs women and children experiencing homelessness. The five-story shelter will include a wellness center where guests access primary care and restorative therapies

such as massage and acupuncture; a health and dental clinic open to the community; an arts and activity lab; a computer library; a beauty salon; a vegetable garden; a children’s center and daycare; and a working classroom kitchen. A community pavilion will host book readings, films, performances, dance workshops and inspirational speakers. The development of Lotus Village comes as MiamiDade County contends with a growing homeless population, many of whom are children. In school year 2015-2016, Miami Dade Public Schools identified 6,083 registered school age children who are homeless, up from the prior year's count of 4,592. Miami's urban core, which incorporates Lotus House’s neighborhood, is home to the County’s largest concentration of homeless, many of whom are children and families. Since opening in Overtown ten years ago, Lotus House has welcomed thousands of women and children, including 128 newborns who will someday call Lotus House their first home. Still, more than 2,000 homeless women and children are turned away annually due to lack of space. UHealth MS Center For Excellence Launches #iamMS Initiative BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

OR SUSAN FOX-ROSELLINI, HER ROLE WITHIN the UM Miller School of Medicine Department of Neurology goes far beyond her title as Executive Director of Development and Marketing. Fox-Rosellini, who was diagnosed with MS 20 years ago, has also become an inspiration and advisor for other MS patients looking for guidance. “When I was diagnosed [eight years ago], my mother’s friend told me I had to call Susan… she was very instrumental in giving me information,” says Nicki Friedland, who calls Fox-Rosellini a mentor. “In the course of our conversations we came up with this idea to do a fundraiser to raise awareness about the disease.” On November 16 that fundraiser, Shop to Stop MS, celebrates its eighth year with a night of food, drinks and entertainment at Saks Fifth Avenue Dadeland, as well as a new #iamMS campaign featuring Rosellini and Friedland as well as fellow South Floridians, Mary Arnold and Sidney Sterling, each telling the world their stories of life with MS. “We were looking for a way to have a larger outreach and thought of the #iamMS campaign,” says Fox-Rossellini. The campaign, featuring four videos rolled out over four weeks on the event’s Facebook page, shows each of the four women’s journeys and the ways in which they each live daily with the disease. “We represent different ages, different lifestyles,” says Friedland, a workout fanatic and mom to two sons. “We show the different faces of MS. I’m a mom raising two boys, you probably wouldn’t even know that I have MS just by looking at me. I think it’s important to know that not everyone with MS is in a wheelchair.” In addition to Fox-Rossellini, who is in her 60s and Friedland, the videos feature Arnold, a mom of three who has had to adapt to vision impairment due to the disease and University of Miami student and college cheerleader Sterling. “The biggest message that we want to impart is that you can have a ‘normal life’ and live with this disease,” says Fox-Rosselini. “We live with the disease because of the great medicines that are out there today.” Those advances are what both women say drives them to make the event bigger and better each year. This year, for instance, event participants will be able to “pre-shop” Saks in the two days before the event, giving them more time to socialize the night of while still supporting the cause with their purchases. BRIDGE TO ENGLISH BACKGROUND Palmetto Senior High School senior Bunce and his older sister, Lauren, have seen firsthand the language struggles many people work through when they first arrive in the US. In fact, it was their mother’s own journey that inspired the creation of the Bridge to English project in 2012. “One day when my sister and I commented on how many books we had, my mother mentioned that she didn’t have books at home to read when she was young, and that she had to learn to read English on her own, since her parents had just immigrated to the US,” says Sean. “We wondered what would happen to the new children who immigrate to this country and who they would have to help them.” ABOUT BRIDGE TO ENGLISH Working in partnership with Pinecrest Elementary’s then Assistant Principal (and now Principal) Lynn Zaldua, Lauren and Sean created the Bridge to English program, recruiting tutors from Palmetto Senior High School to tutor ESOL students from Pinecrest who speak various languages, including Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese, among others. “The presence of this program is important to the Pinecrest community, being that we are an international community, culturally rich and diverse, with people moving to Pinecrest from all over the world,” says Sean. “Although our area schools may have programs and teachers that speak Spanish, there is a need for instructors in other world languages to bridge the language barrier and to help facilitate communication and reinforce English learning in these elementary school children, hence the name of the program.”

A STUDENT CONNECTION At the start of each school year Sean meets with Pinecrest Assistant Principal Yamberli Cruz to identify ESOL students who might benefit from the Bridge to English program. At the same time, Sean recruits volunteers at the high school as well as contacting all the new and existing volunteers with the steps they have to take to renew their school volunteer status prior to the beginning of each academic year, and providing an orientation to the program. “At this time we have students paired up with tutors that speak Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese,” says Sean. “In prior years, we have had Hindi, Japanese, Hungarian, Arabic and Korean-speaking ESOL students and tutors. The languages offered are a direct result of the languages needed at the elementary school, so they may change each year.”

The program has empowered us to see that we can make a difference. Because most of the tutors are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants, it is easy to see ourselves in these children, no matter what native language they speak.” 24

MORE THAN WORDS Not surprisingly, the students in the program benefit from more than just language skills… they form a bond with their tutors that can go on for years. “Not only do these children learn English, we provide mentorship through pairing children with high school students that serve as role models, and instruction that will make those children better students and ultimately more successful in life,” says Sean, who hopes to expand the program to other local schools in the future. “The program has been shown to increase the ESOL students’ FCAT scores, and it continues to help the children become more proficient in English, provide them with support and mentorship, and provide role models to inspire them to want to achieve more in their futures.” And, of course, it’s not just a win for the children, Sean says the high schoolers, too, come away with positive gains. “For the volunteer students and myself, there is great satisfaction in knowing that we have made a difference in the lives of these children, and that… we are bringing together people from different cultures and lifting them up to be at their best. It has brought out the best in all of us.”

EPRESSION HINDERS THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS. THE HOPElessness that comes with the condition devastates not only the individuals suffering from depression, but also the lives of their family and friends. But there is good news: Ketamine infusion therapy is now the newest and most effective way to treat depression. With Ketamine therapy, patients can see improvement in hours, not weeks, as opposed to current antidepressant medications. This revolutionary therapeutic method was discovered as a side effect after its use as an anesthetic. We often hear about the negative side effects of medications, but in this case, scientists have discovered a very positive side effect of ketamine. In fact, it has been used for more than 50 years as an anesthetic agent, and the WHO has declared it an essential medication. Currently, more than 20 clinics in the US deliver the groundbreaking treatment. Ketamine infusion therapy successfully treats various types of depression, such as bipolar disorder, manic-depressive depression and postpartum depression. Excellent results have also been seen in treating debilitating conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and chronic pain from fibromyalgia, TMJ, or PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). Treatment centers should, of course, tailor the treatment to the condition. Traditional treatments are fully effective in only one-third of patients, another one-third have incomplete resolution of their symptoms, and the final third have no response at all. Presently, ketamine infusion therapy shows a significant improvement in 80 percent of cases. So how does it work? As with many anesthetic agents, we do not yet entirely understand how ketamine delivers such amazing results. We do know, however, that it can be tremendously effective even in refractory cases (where traditional medications have failed). Some of the research indicates that an increase in the neurotransmitter called glutamic acid repairs or reforms previously damaged or unresponsive synapses. Those malfunctioning synapses would have normally resulted in depression. The treatments involve a series of infusions performed in a controlled monitored environment. Typically, each infusion takes about an hour. During this time the patient will experience a sensation of dissociation, much like a vivid dream. Some have described this as an out of body experience. These effects are mild since the dosage used is much lower than that used for anesthesia. Many studies have reported mood improvements almost immediately, or within hours of the therapy. In general, there is a starting protocol of several infusions in a short period of time, called the acute treatment phase. This normally involves five treatments given over five days, after which the patient can look forward to “booster” infusions every few months. When seeking a treatment center, patients should prioritize one with the correct licenses and privileges to administer ketamine. You went on to study in Paris and Boston, how has your photography evolved over the years? Life takes you along unexpected paths, which makes you take risks and make decisions constantly about your life. That is how you evolve and mature. It’s the same way, I feel, with my work. I began as an adolescent with my analog camera, then ventured into black and white, color, dark room, different types of film, cameras and formats and, of course, different materials. I also made the shift from analog to digital, accelerating the traditional photographic process and theoretically disrupting the previous notions of the indexical connection between photographic image and “reality”. Digital photography questions the notion that photography is representative of reality. How would you describe your approach to your work? My work has always been my passion. I have always been moved by mysticism and spirituality. I am come from more of an emotional place than of the rational and the intellect, which I think is clearly reflected in the subjective nature of my work. It is a very intimate work, experiential and very distanced from the documentary. My work is experimental and very uniquely me.

Renowned photographer Corina Hernandez Thermiotis found a passion for photography at the age of 15 and hasn’t stopped creating and evolving since then. This year she once again partners with Miami Children’s Health Foundation for an exhibit at ART MIAMI. “Hope illuminates the eye of a child and in the same way, I search to capture the light through my lens,” says the artist. “MCH Foundation is a remarkable institution helping thousands of children and I am proud of adding to that incredible project.” We spoke with Hernandez Thermiotis about creative inspiration, the evolution of her work and her partnership with MCH Foundation.

Tell us a little about your background and how you first became interested in photography? I grew up in Caracas and moved to Miami 8 years ago. My evolution in the world of photography in my early years was always an uphill battle for me and I began that path, breaking all the barriers of my traditional home and family where the role of a woman was very clearly defined. There were no artists in my family, nor in my inner circle. My uncle gave me a manual camera when I was 15 years old for a trip to Europe, and that sparked my passion for photography. Upon my return, all my friends and I shared our photos and albums and when I saw mine, I saw that mine was very well done. Something awoke in me; I think it was the first time that I felt that I had done something that I was truly proud of. From then on, I began to explore the world of photography.

Photography has changed so much over the past two decades, how has the introduction of digital figured into your work? To me, digital photography today is an aperture, the amplification of analog photography, since it opens endless options. It is undoubtedly a great evolution. I’ve worked with digital photography since 2002, but I keep my analog principles as my foundation. All of my equipment is now digital, I equally use different materials as mirrors, water, home-made lenses, studio creations or mock ups to achieve the effects that I want and take my formless ideas to reality. I paint with light, using my camera as a first resource. I then use the digital tools to develop my images. How did you connect with the Miami Children’s Health Foundation and how are you working with them? In 2012, I created a project with Miami Children’s Health Foundation for Art Miami, where the proceeds of my Art Work were allocated to the Foundation. I have been working with my series of Spirals that was inspired during my first year of this project. I created the series, Echoes of the Future, using the eyes of children in the center of the spiral, looking onto the future of a better world. It was an installation of 55 photos and more than 80 percent were sold in the four days of Art Miami. This success inspired me to continue with this project with greater impetus. For this next season of Art Miami 2016 I am going to exhibit my series called SPIRALS

GH, THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING. THE HOLIDAYS ARE expensive and stressful with the requisite traveling, parties, and worst of all, GIFTS. Do you have a particularly picky person in your life? Maybe a son with his first job out of college, or a newlywed daughter (with an even pickier new husband)? What about your aging parents, plagued by their empty nest and even harder to please than usual? Perhaps you should consider purchasing, or contributing towards the purchase of, a new home. There are multiple ways – other than outright buying it - to make a new home a true holiday miracle. Of course, an easy way to give the gift of a home this holiday season is to contribute cash towards either the purchase price or the closing costs. However, in my opinion, a more useful gift would be paying for legal services during the closing process. Buying a new home is complicated. For the holidays, give the gift of uncomplicating it. Hire an attorney as the perfect present for your gift receiver. First, there’s the sales contract – which makes no sense to the average person. As a holiday gift for your beloved relative, you could pay for a lawyer to review the contract and ensure that he or she is not taken advantage of and that both parties comply with the contract. When buying a home, there are sets of very important milestones on a timeline that, if not met, can determine not only if the sale closes, but whether or not the buyer loses his or her deposit. The importance of having a lawyer available to pay attention to the details of the contract cannot be overstated – thousands of dollars are at stake. Therefore, consider taking a little of the stress and financial burden off the buyers by retaining the lawyer for them. This is both a thoughtful and practical gift (and it can’t be returned!). Note that certain law firms, including our own, offer legal services gift cards that make great stocking stuffers. If professional review of the contract is not necessary, consider hiring a lawyer to be present and review all documents at closing. The careful eye of an attorney is the most important at the closing, where money is being exchanged. Oftentimes, title companies accidentally charge the buyer for a cost that should be covered by the seller, and no one catches the error. The assistance of an attorney in catching these errors can easily make up for the cost of hiring the attorney. Truly, regardless of where you are in the purchase process, an attorney can act as a watchdog to ensure that the sale goes through smoothly and handle any conflicts as they arise. Perhaps your relative isn’t ready to take the plunge yet and commit to a new home. A fun idea to consider is starting a “house trust fund.” Nothing says “I love you” more than donating a hundred dollars or two to a trust established specifically for the purpose of purchasing a home each Christmas. Trusts sound complicated, but trust me (very bad pun intended) they are not so difficult to pull off. With the right language in your trust document, a trust can be a safe way for you to contribute the money for a house to your friend or relative without the worry that the money will be spent on other purposes. Furthermore, other relatives or friends can also contribute to the fund each year, during not only the winter holidays but on birthdays and other special occasions as well. An attorney can help you establish and maintain the trust, and ensure that the money is being handled and accounted for properly. Everybody wants to spend their holidays with a roof over their heads – especially a roof they can call their own. Let’s make that happen together this holiday season.

Presented this year by Uhealth Jackson Urgent Care Centers, for 2016, 30 MiamiDade and Broward, middle and senior high, public, private and parochial schools, over 1,500 young people, compete for cash prizes. The Competition is a showcase for the extraordinarily talented young people in our community. Today, music programs in our schools have taken a back seat to other agendas. But nothing can ever stop the music! Such talent can’t be hidden, or hushed. We celebrate that music and the children who perform it. Since 1987, the Caroling Competition has given more than $250,000 in cash prize money to support the music programs in our schools. The Caroling Competition takes place over five nights on the steps of the 550 Building. Beginning on Wednesday, November 30th, performances run through Sunday afternoon, December 4th. Six different schools appear each night. Middle Schools perform on Wednesday and Friday. Senior High performances are on Thursday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon from 3 until 6 pm. All evening performances are from 7 until 10 p.m. The concerts are free. The Grand Prize Winners return on Tuesday, December 6th to perform their award winning program and accept their checks, at the Awards Show, beginning at 7 p.m.
