A New Cure For A Common Problem

A

FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen

production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-

menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

Fox-Rosellini, who was diagnosed with MS 20 years ago, has also become an inspiration and advisor for other MS patients looking for guidance. “When I was diagnosed [eight years ago], my mother’s friend told me I had to call Susan… she was very instrumental in giving me information,” says Nicki Friedland, who calls Fox-Rosellini a mentor. “In the course of our conversations we came up with this idea to do a fundraiser to raise awareness about the disease.” On November 16 that fundraiser, Shop to Stop MS, celebrates its eighth year with a night of food, drinks and entertainment at Saks Fifth Avenue Dadeland, as well as a new #iamMS campaign featuring Rosellini and Friedland as well as fellow South Floridians, Mary Arnold and Sidney Sterling, each telling the world their stories of life with MS. “We were looking for a way to have a larger outreach and thought of the #iamMS campaign,” says Fox-Rossellini. The campaign, featuring four videos rolled out over four weeks on the event’s Facebook page, shows each of the four women’s journeys and the ways in which they each live daily with the disease. “We represent different ages, different lifestyles,” says Friedland, a workout fanatic and mom to two sons. “We show the different faces of MS. I’m a mom raising two boys, you probably wouldn’t even know that I have MS just by looking at me. I think it’s important to know that not everyone with MS is in a wheelchair.” In addition to Fox-Rossellini, who is in her 60s and Friedland, the videos feature Arnold, a mom of three who has had to adapt to vision impairment due to the disease and University of Miami student and college cheerleader Sterling. “The biggest message that we want to impart is that you can have a ‘normal life’ and live with this disease,” says Fox-Rosselini. “We live with the disease because of the great medicines that are out there today.” Those advances are what both women say drives them to make the event bigger and better each year. This year, for instance, event participants will be able to “pre-shop” Saks in the two days before the event, giving them more time to socialize the night of while still supporting the cause with their purchases. This year’s event feature food and entertainment by local sponsors such as Fare to Remember Catering, Town Kitchen & Bar, Strada in the Grove, RA Sushi, Earl’s Kitchen + Bar, Elle Taco, Misha’s Cupcakes, Azucar ice Cream, Nothing Bundt Cakes, DJ Brooke G and PRP Productions & Entertainment. “When I was diagnosed 20 years ago I was giving myself daily injections, whereas today, someone like Sidney can take an oral medication,” says Fox-Rosellini. “We truly represent the tremendous evolution of the disease and life with it.” To view the #iamMS videos and for more information on the Shop to Stop MS event visit Facebook.com/umiamishoptostopms

Sean Bunce BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

BRIDGE TO ENGLISH BACKGROUND Palmetto Senior High School senior Bunce and his older sister, Lauren, have seen firsthand the language struggles many people work through when they first arrive in the US. In fact, it was their mother’s own journey that inspired the creation of the Bridge to English project in 2012. “One day when my sister and I commented on how many books we had, my mother mentioned that she didn’t have books at home to read when she was young, and that she had to learn to read English on her own, since her parents had just immigrated to the US,” says Sean. “We wondered what would happen to the new children who immigrate to this country and who they would have to help them.” ABOUT BRIDGE TO ENGLISH Working in partnership with Pinecrest Elementary’s then Assistant Principal (and now Principal) Lynn Zaldua, Lauren and Sean created the Bridge to English program, recruiting tutors from Palmetto Senior High School to tutor ESOL students from Pinecrest who speak various languages, including Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese, among others. “The presence of this program is important to the Pinecrest community, being that we are an international community, culturally rich and diverse, with people moving to Pinecrest from all over the world,” says Sean. “Although our area schools may have programs and teachers that speak Spanish, there is a need for instructors in other world languages to bridge the language barrier and to help facilitate communication and reinforce English learning in these elementary school children, hence the name of the program.”

A STUDENT CONNECTION At the start of each school year Sean meets with Pinecrest Assistant Principal Yamberli Cruz to identify ESOL students who might benefit from the Bridge to English program. At the same time, Sean recruits volunteers at the high school as well as contacting all the new and existing volunteers with the steps they have to take to renew their school volunteer status prior to the beginning of each academic year, and providing an orientation to the program. “At this time we have students paired up with tutors that speak Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese,” says Sean. “In prior years, we have had Hindi, Japanese, Hungarian, Arabic and Korean-speaking ESOL students and tutors. The languages offered are a direct result of the languages needed at the elementary school, so they may change each year.”

The program has empowered us to see that we can make a difference. Because most of the tutors are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants, it is easy to see ourselves in these children, no matter what native language they speak.” 18

MORE THAN WORDS Not surprisingly, the students in the program benefit from more than just language skills… they form a bond with their tutors that can go on for years. “Not only do these children learn English, we provide mentorship through pairing children with high school students that serve as role models, and instruction that will make those children better students and ultimately more successful in life,” says Sean, who hopes to expand the program to other local schools in the future. “The program has been shown to increase the ESOL students’ FCAT scores, and it continues to help the children become more proficient in English, provide them with support and mentorship, and provide role models to inspire them to want to achieve more in their futures.” And, of course, it’s not just a win for the children, Sean says the high schoolers, too, come away with positive gains. “For the volunteer students and myself, there is great satisfaction in knowing that we have made a difference in the lives of these children, and that… we are bringing together people from different cultures and lifting them up to be at their best. It has brought out the best in all of us.”

& Spa PALMETTO ELEMENTARY TO HOST 2ND ANNUAL WINTER AUCTION

Be you (tilful) ‘ Tis Season 20% Off Our Skin Care Line The Entire Month of November!

Palmetto Elementary School PTA will host its 2nd Annual PES Winter Social and Auction at the beautiful Thalatta Estate in Palmetto Bay. This exclusive, adults- only event serves as the school’s largest annual fundraiser. All proceeds from the event directly support the school. The event will take place on Thursday, December 1, 2016. Funds raised at last year’s event helped underwrite the costs of classroom technology upgrades and environmentally-friendly water bottle refilling stations throughout the school. “Our continued success as an A+ School depends on the support and generosity of our local sponsors,” said PTA President Nancy Levy. “In this time of school budget cuts, the funds we raise pay for educational programs, classroom supplies, campus improvements and technological resources beyond what the state of Florida or Miami-Dade Public School District can provide.”

MAGNET SCHOOL ENROLLMENT Miami-Dade County Public Schools opened its enrollment period for magnet programs across the school district, Saturday, October 1st, 2016. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, January 15, 2017. In addition to the many exciting programs that were offered last year, parents and students will be able to choose from new and innovative magnet programs that were created for the 2016-2017 school year. Magnet programs offer unique thematic strands of study that focus on students’ special interests, talents, and abilities for all grade levels. The offerings this year include new magnet programs in the areas of Robotics; Biomedical, Forensic Science; Coding; Cybersecurity; Visual Arts; and Medical Health Sciences. Beginning October 1st, the magnet application system can be accessed at miamimagnets.org, which will be available in multiple languages.

The College Board recently released the results for the SAT for the graduating class of 2016. Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) seniors outshined their counterparts in Florida and reported increased scores in Reading, Mathematics and Writing. “Our students continue to do exceptionally well on state and national assessments,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “The results of the College Board SAT demonstrate that our students are not only outpacing their state and national counterparts, but are emerging from high school with superior college and career readiness skills. They are fully engaged academically and our instructional staff and programs are among the best in the nation. All of Miami-Dade County should revel in this outstanding achievement for our students and teachers.”

JAMES FIELD JR. On The Rise F ROM THE MOMENT YOU ENGAGE IN CONVERSATION WITH HIM, YOU can't deny James Field's passion for Pinecrest. His vision for the South Florida community is rooted in a lifetime of memories and he wants to ensure that future generations are raised with the same sense of warmth and security. “I want to improve Pinecrest not only because I have the vision and the necessary skills to make it a reality, but also because this community represents who I am,” says Field, a Gulliver Preparatory School and University of Miami graduate. “Pinecrest isn’t just somewhere I relocated, it’s my hometown.” In fact, for Field, each corner, park, restaurant and sidewalk matters because he can recall a story from nearly every one. Field began working in sales at Frey Farms, one of the nation’s largest agriculture companies, and is now the company’s director of business development. He also founded Dogmadik, a supply chain management company that provides services to emerging restaurant brands. “All of my business success circles back to my beliefs,” he says, noting that his belief in beginning good eating habits at a young age inspired him to fight for legislation to keep fresh Florida produce in public schools nationwide. Through Dogmadik, as well, he has worked for the community, helping small businesses to prosper and grow. Field says though his business acumen speak to his strengths, his commitment to philanthropy is even more testament to his character and desire to make a difference in the world. To that end, Field recently travelled to India with former presidential candidate Mitt Romney as part of Charity Vision to help build eye care centers. He is a member of, and fundraiser for, Best Buddies, a charity headed by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and a board member of the Florida House, the State Embassy in Washington D.C. Additionally, Field recently chaired and hosted an event for Operation Underground Railroad at Fairchild Tropical Garden that raised more than $150,000 to save children from the sex-slave trade. “My priority is to make residents feel safe and secure in Pinecrest,” says Field. To help achieve that goal, Field says he would look toward making sure the Pinecrest Police Department is provided with the latest crime fighting technology via a real-

location of existing tax dollars (an initiative that has garnered him an endorsement from the Police Benevolent Association). “My own experience in establishing budgets within my own businesses has given me the knowledge to get that job done,” he says. Field’s other priorities include proper maintenance of Village parks and attention to our infrastructure. “I am not a politician. I am a businessman, a philanthropist and an entrepreneur,” says Field. “I could choose to live anywhere, but I chose to stay in Pinecrest and I choose to focus on a community I love and one I will work to serve.”

“Pinecrest is where my entire family lives. No other candidate will care more about the future development of the Village of Pinecrest more than I will. Vote for me and see positive change occur!" - JF

The Competition is a showcase for the extraordinarily talented young people in our community. Today, music programs in our schools have taken a back seat to other agendas. But nothing can ever stop the music! Such talent can’t be hidden, or hushed. We celebrate that music and the children who perform it. Since 1987, the Caroling Competition has given more than $250,000 in cash prize money to support the music programs in our schools. The Caroling Competition takes place over five nights on the steps of the 550 Building. Beginning on Wednesday, November 30th, performances run through Sunday afternoon, December 4th. Six different schools appear each night. Middle Schools perform on Wednesday and Friday. Senior High performances are on Thursday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon from 3 until 6 pm. All evening performances are from 7 until 10 p.m. The concerts are free. The Grand Prize Winners return on Tuesday, December 6th to perform their award winning program and accept their checks, at the Awards Show, beginning at 7 p.m.

This November, Become Tobacco Free BY MARTHA RESTREPO, SOUTH MIAMI FAMILY DENTAL

T

HERE ARE NO IFS, ANDS OR "BUTTS" ABOUT IT: SMOKING can be detrimental to oral health. Beyond the bad breath and yellow teeth, do you really know what you're getting yourself into by smoking every day? Probably not. There are quite a few uncertainties surrounding smoking and oral health, especially as tobacco alternatives become more prevalent in the market. Smoking, your mouth, and your health are deeply interconnected and below, we'll discuss the common health issues you should be aware of when it comes to smoking.

Top 10 Oral Health Problems Associated With Smoking Smoking can damage your oral health in both the short and long term. The most common complications include: 1. Bad breath 2. Discoloration or yellowing of the teeth 3. Salivary gland inflammation (particularly on the roof of the mouth) 4. Increased plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth 5. Increased bone loss in the jaw 6. Increased risk of leukoplakia, a condition that manifests as white or gray patches on the tongue, cheek, or roof of the mouth due to chronic irritation of mucous membranes 7. Increased risk of gum disease, which can cause future tooth loss 8. Delayed healing after any major procedure such as tooth extraction, periodontal treatments, or oral surgery 9. Decreased success rates of dental implant procedures 10. Increased risk of oral cancer

Cigarettes Aren't the Only Culprit Causing Oral Health Complications Cigarettes are not the only tobacco product detrimental to your oral health. Pipes and cigars can cause the same health problems as cigarettes, and in some cases, pipe and cigar users also experience an increased risk for pharyngeal or throat cancer. Because of this, many tobacco users turn to smokeless tobacco products like snuff and chewing tobacco. However, these products also increase the risk for cancer of the mouth, throat, and esophagus. In fact, some of these products, particularly chewing tobacco, are actually worse than cigarettes in terms of their negative oral health effects.

It's Best To "Butt" This Habit out of Your Life Once and for All According to the American Cancer Society, smokers are six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop cancer of the mouth, lips, tongue, and throat. This makes it apparent that using any type of tobacco product compromises your health in a significant way. #NovemberSmokeFreeAwarenessMonth #BetterOralHealth #TobaccoFree

The Gift of Music: A Gift That Lasts a Lifetime BY IRIS COHEN

D

O YOU KNOW A MUSIC LOVER THAT YOU WANT TO BUY A SPECIAL GIFT for? There are lots of neat gadgets and equipment that your musician would love to get and would probably appreciate more than the typical after shave, tie or socks! Just about this time of year you will ask or be asked the seasons most frequently asked question…What do you want for Christmas? If you are like me, this is the moment that your mind goes blank and you come up with some lame response. Of course, after I have given them some dumb answer, I actually come up with a huge list of my “wants.” Unfortunately, this epiphany comes much later and then I am too embarrassed to tell them what terrific, “gotta have” things I have come up with.

ENTIRE STORE. ALL ITEMS.

It is hard for a non-musician to figure out what to buy for a musician without coming right out and asking them. So what do you do? You are pretty sure that they would like to have something related to the instrument they play, but since you are not a musician and probably don’t know what they already have, you are kind of stuck. You could ask them, but then it wouldn’t be a surprise. And what if they ask for something that is not in your budget? There are many items that would be useful and appreciated regardless of what instrument is played, and many of them can be purchased for under $10. For example, just about any musician could use a music stand. There are a wide variety of music stands to choose from; light weight portable models as well as heavy duty stationary types. Most string instruments need to be tuned prior to every performance. While many musicians have a tuner, having a second one allows them to keep one in their gig bag and another at home or at the studio. What else? Consider buying your favorite musician a guitar/instrument stand, or a cool strap or a capo for your acoustic guitar player, or a microphone or…get the idea? There are lots and lots of gifts to choose from, but if the choices get too overwhelming for you, there is always the favorite of all…the gift certificate! Let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you make this holiday season come alive with the sounds of music. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs, and music lessons. A Naturally Shifting Market BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

O

CTOBER HAS BEEN A VERY GOOD MONTH FOR BUYERS more so than for sellers. We know that when inventory builds it impacts price. Yes, we’re experiencing a flattening of prices and some downward price adjustments. The buyers have more to choose from and are aggressive in their offers. Sellers that are priced even slightly above fair market value are not getting the looks from buyers. So, how do sellers know that their price is not competitive? It starts with the number of showings that the property gets from buyers. The higher the frequency of showings the more likely to receive an offer. The inverse is true also. Days on market are extending as well, which leads to postponement of plans and even change of plans altogether for some property owners. Now is a good time to check in on your motivation to sell and decide if you want to make this move, or, if you prefer to stay put.

The price per square foot has increased year over year in our area and still there is higher inventory than last year. That is not sustainable. The market has shifted to a buyer’s market unequivocally. The sellers that adjust will sell. The cost of overpricing is amplified after such a shift! A buyer’s market is a trading up market. Falling home prices are a great opportunity for a savvy homeowner looking to move up. Even though your home sale price may be lower, the smaller loss at sale can be compensated by greater savings at purchase. It’s also a great time to buy investment properties that generate passive income at a reasonable rate of return. How much longer will these interest rates last? Shopping season is here, after all. We are seeing more traffic in our open houses which is encouraging for us all. Buyers are looking for deals. Market interest can wane quickly if the perception of value is not there. We see that in our follow up contacts after receiving a visit at an open house. They have plenty to choose from and simply move on. Some sellers have taken their homes off the market to remodel the areas of the homes that buyers reject. The reward being that they will obtain their “ideal” price with the risk being the opposite. Others, have made the price adjustments and are getting more showings. Both strategies can work. The candy is now put away and the fall harvest is done. It’s our time to be thankful for the wonderful opportunity we have to serve this community and more specifically to the homeowners that trust us with their property. Our family lives, work, shares and plays right here in the South end! We are very grateful to the Pappas family and The Keyes Company, Realtors for the support, leadership, guidance and strong presence in this market. This company has only been doing it for 90 years now, and counting. Happy Thanksgiving from our families to yours! Taking a Timeout in Tennessee BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

O

NE OF LIFE’S GREATEST CHALlenges is realizing when to take a time out. My realization came a few weeks ago, when I found myself having a full-blown conversation with my cat… time to get away. I packed a small bag, took the top off my jeep and headed for Knoxville, Tennessee. I knew the ’82 World’s Fair had been held there and it’s home to the University of Tennessee but I was going there to spend time in nature and reconnect with myself. Crossing the Henley Street Bridge into downtown, I was very much aware of the little mountain town feel. I checked into the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park and trust me, as Robin, director of sales and marketing, said, “This is not your grandpa’s Holiday Inn.” The hotel’s décor was inviting and my room was spacious and extremely pleasant. However, what really made this hotel a place I will definitely recommend was its staff. Chris at the front desk could not have been nicer and more accommodating and Charles, the shuttle driver, entertained me with his personality and stories of Knoxville. On my way to dinner, I was taken with the quaintness of the town. There is Old City with its shops and restaurants and the square downtown is blocked off to make downtown one of the most pedestrian friendly cities I’ve seen. There was a movie playing in the square with people sitting in lawn chairs as the cool night breeze blowing their blankets. I stepped into J.C. Holdway, a restaurant that made me think of a loft in New York. After asking my waiter to tell me his favorite foods, I settled on the chicken wings with Alabama white sauce. All I can say is that had I been with friends, I would have ordered another batch. They were spectacular. I decided to check out the nightlife and found myself noticing people turning down a small alleyway. I peeked around the corner to see them entering a doorway with a red light over it. Making my way across the threshold, I could make out a dimly lit hallway with a gentleman wearing a gold bowtie standing by another door. Believe it or not, I was ushered into a speakeasy. On the other side of the small room was a wall that slid back and forth which would gain you entry into The Oliver Hotel. What a step back into time. The next few days were a whirlwind of fun. I went kayaking with River Sports Outfitters down the river and just soaked in the solitude and the beauty of the riverbanks. I ate lunch at Jackie’s Dream, which is a small restaurant in a neighborhood serving the best soul food I have ever had. Denisha, my waitress, just made the whole experience the best with her singing. I had time for a quick stop at the Botanical Gardens to see their new secret garden before heading to Wine on the Water. Wine on the Water is a yearly event to benefit Cystic Fibrosis and it was wonderful. There were multiple wine and food booths and it appeared the whole community came out to support the cause. As nighttime crept in, the bridge lanterns came on and a paddleboat cruised down the river. Norman Rockwell at his best. I have to say, it’s difficult to pinpoint the best experience in this amazing town but Navitat ranks way up there. Navitat is a zip line adventure park with six stations that start at a huge tree house. Each station gradually increases in tree height and difficulty. At the end of each “adventure” you zip line down. It was the challenge I was looking for. Sadly, I had to say goodbye to Knoxville but as I drove back across the bridge, I waved and thought, “Thanks for the memories.” Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for The Florida Villager. S MOST OF THE REST OF THE COUNTRY gears up for a winter of indoor activities, life in South Florida is just headed outside. And for that, many families in and around Miami can thank Betsy Fantis. Fantis, the owner of South Miami boutique Living Alfresco, has become the go-to source for stylish Miamians who want to create seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces, working with clients who need anything from an accessories refresh to a full renovation. “Our clients want to have a beautiful home,” says Fantis, who moved to her location in the Ravlin Center three years ago. “Some may not have the time but know what they want, while others don’t know where to begin. We can come in achieve the look they’re going for.” Achieving that look begins with figuring out what exactly the space will be used for. “It depends on the client’s lifestyle and how the client entertains,” says Fantis. “We’ve made custom tables for those who want a dining experience and to sit 12-14 people. We’ve had clients who want a lounge-y feel, to have a party atmosphere with deep sofas and cool chairs.” Fantis also says families are now looking to bring an entire room outdoors. “A lot of families want to set up an outdoor kitchen with the outdoor TV and sectional, where people can watch a football game and bbq,” she

42

THE FLORIDA VILLAGER

says. “They’re spending more and more time in their outdoor space.” Also of concern to clients is the unique (and often harsh) South Florida climate and conditions. To combat that, Fantis suggests some of her newer Sunbrella/Rain fabrics that are made with the Miami market in mind, addressing everything from heat and humidity to rain and salt. “We really believe in starting with quality outdoor furniture and once you’re updating the outdoor area you don’t want to revisit it again and again, you want to do it right,” says Fantis, who likes to switch up the space with new cushions or pillows every few years. Within the store, Fantis now offers about ten different manufacturers, choosing to stick to well-respected brands such as Summer Classics and Gloster, whom Fantis calls “the design gem of the outdoor furniture business.” She is also careful to mix both high-end and mid-level price points and to offer clients competitive pricing (such as a one-time consultation fee on

design projects). “Most of our clients want the works, everything from furniture to rugs, pillows and accessories…they want me to pull it all together for them,” she says. “We’ve got a nice group of manufacturers to mix together to give families everything they need.” Living Alfresco is located at 7291 Red Road, South Miami, FL 33143. Three Ways To Bring Wheat Back Into Your Diet BY DR. JOHN DOUILLARD

T

HE GLUTEN-FREE INDUSTRY IS PREDICTED TO REACH 15.6 BILLION IN SALES in 2016, with 28 percent of Americans set on avoiding wheat and gluten products. Many are choosing to avoid wheat because they don’t feel good after eating it, want to lose weight or have been convinced it is unhealthy. Before you give wheat a life sentence as a bad food, here are some whole wheat facts and tips that may allow you to successfully break bread once again.

EAT WHEAT TIP #1: BE CHOOSY

Many gluten-free experts suggest that ancient wheat had much less gluten than our modern wheat. But are we sure it is the gluten that is the cause of the “gluten sensitivity?” One study compared the ancient wheat, Kamut, with some modern wheat strains. They found that Kamut actually had twice the amount of hard-to-digest A-gliadin glutens than the modern wheat and was shown to reduce inflammation while also lowering blood sugar and cholesterol significantly more than the modern wheat. In another report by the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, the average American ate 86 pounds more wheat flour in 1900 than they did in 2008, suggesting that the increase in celiac disease and gluten sensitivity may not be from the gluten after all. The Takeaway: Ancient strains of wheat that include Einkorn, Emmer and Kamut have been found to have more antioxidant activity than modern wheat and are good grains to start with as they are also typically prepared without industrial processing. But, not all modern wheats are created equally. Spelt is a much easier grain to digest because it has 40 percent less of the hard-to-digest anti-nutrients called phytic acids than common whole wheat. Sprouting whole wheat and Rye are also good choices.

EAT WHEAT TIP #2: EAT FERMENTED WHEAT There is no doubt that the gluten in wheat is a hard-to-digest protein, but history suggests that we are well-adapted to digest it. New research from the University of Utah has found evidence that early humans have been eating C-3 grasses such as wheat and barley for at least 3.4 million years. As for adapting to wheat, we have. Studies have found microbes that specifically produce enzymes for breaking down gluten in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. The Takeaway: Early bakers discovered that fermenting the wheat flour with beneficial bacteria made the wheat much easier to digest. In a handful of studies, sourdough bread was found to reduce the gluten content of the bread, even rendering it “gluten-free.” In fact, when they served this bread to patients with celiac symptoms, they did not measure any increased intestinal inflammation. This is not suggesting that folks with celiac should try eating sourdough bread, but for those with gluten sensitivity, sourdough bread is a good place to start.

EAT WHEAT TIP #3: IF YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF IT, DON’T EAT IT. Did you ever wonder why the bread you buy in the supermarket stays “fresh” and squishy for weeks? Modern breads are loaded with dough conditioners and preservatives that keep the bread “fresh” or resistant to mold for weeks. In addition to the many chemicals and added sugars put in most breads, the most dangerous of all is the added oils, which are key for their so-called freshness, squishiness and shelf life. Remember, the human body is made up of cells that are 90 percent bacteria and only 10 percent human – and if the 90 percent is doing the heavy lifting for most 1201127

OWADAYS, THERAPISTS, SPORT COACHES, AND TRAINers understand the benefits of aquatic therapy for people. The benefits for dogs are also well documented, and are strongly supported by the Canine Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation field of veterinary medicine. For dogs, aquatic therapy refers mainly to therapy in an underwater treadmill (UWTM). This mode of therapy, where the patient enters a huge water tank with a treadmill at the bottom, was first developed for racing horses in the 1970s. It was later introduced as a physical therapy tool for people in the mid 1980s, before finally being developed for dogs at the end of the 1990s. Why is the UWTM such an important tool for canine physical therapy? Therapy in an UWTM allows the performance of exercises for balance and movement safely and pain free; well before the exercises can be attempted on land. For this reason, it is an ideal modality following orthopedic surgery, allowing the dog to return to normal functional mobility early in the post-surgical period. For neurological patients unable to walk, the UWTM therapy reduces the atrophying effects of immobility while facilitating proprioceptive gait training (awareness of one’s limbs in space), speeds gait training and improving the active range of motion of all joints as compared to land exercises. For arthritic senior pets, the UWTM therapy will improve balance and coordination while strengthening the muscles and enhancing cardio endurance. Athletic dogs will strengthen muscles and improve their muscle and cardiopulmonary endurance, which translates to improved performance in competitions. The UWTM also represents an important part of an effective weight loss program for obese dogs, raising their metabolic rate and improving their ability to burn fat. An advantage of the UWTM therapy is that it gives the therapist the option to change water depth, resistance and speed of the treadmill as needed. These variables allow a consistently progressive physical therapy plan to be implemented. In addition, the warm water temperature offers soothing muscle relaxation. Assistive devices and modalities - such as elastic bands, flippers, tail work, water currents through use of jets, manual therapies and massage, to name a few - are frequently employed while performing therapy in the UWTM. Interested? Before considering therapy in an UWTM, your best option is to have your dog evaluated by a licensed veterinarian certified in canine rehabilitation, and with vast experienced in UWTM therapy. This is critical in the case of geriatric dogs, dogs with concurrent medical conditions and simply for peace of mind. A complete medical history that includes medical diagnosis, prescribed medications, supplements, past surgeries, and sports injuries is required. A complete exam from the perspective of a physical therapist is essential. A clinical assessment and a water therapy customized plan will be formulated. Measurable outcome goals will be established. The dog will be reassessed periodically, and the water therapy will be modified according to the dog’s progress until the rehabilitation goals are reached. Each therapeutic program is individualized and cannot be pre-formulated. A maintenance program

Should We Add Fresh, Organic Human Food to Our Dog’s Diet? BY TAMI MAIER

T

ODAY, 96 PERCENT OF DOG OWNERS AROUND THE GLOBE ARE FEEDING dry commercial dog foods. Of those 96 percent, there is a large majority that believes dried commercial dog food is really all their dog needs and would never stop to consider the benefits of adding fresh “human food”. Human food being organic protein meat source, and organic pet-safe fruits and vegetables. There are many reasons why some of these dog owners feel this way, however the most popular reason today seems to be the 50-year-old rumor that is in existence and still spreading. You know the one: “Giving your dog table scraps is bad!” How or when did this terrible rumor start? Well, if we go back in time, research shows that shortly after the invention of processed dog foods, manufacturers were having a hard time convincing dog owners to make the switch from foods in their refrigerators to their commercial dog foods. So in 1964, the pet food industry, along with the PFI, joined together with a whole bunch of marketing dollars and launched one of the most influential campaigns the pet world had ever seen: the “Ban All Table Scraps from your Pets’ Bowls” campaign. Through thousands of newspapers, magazines, and news stations, the public was warned about the dangers of table food scraps or “human food” and the importance of feeding “processed” commercial pet food. From there, the giant smear campaign took off!Not only did this clever campaign work, but it was so impactful that now, 50 years later, folks are still in fear of offering anything that is not labeled dog food. So the questions is… Is it wrong to give your dog table scraps? Not according to ongoing research it isn’t, especially with today’s cancer rates being one in two dogs! In a 2005 study conducted at Purdue University on Scottish Terriers, the results showed that adding fresh vegetables to dry commercial kibble actually prevented and/or slowed down the development of bladder cancer. In the study, dogs ate a diet of dry commercial pet food, while some got an assortment of vegetables added to the mix at least three times per week. When the study was concluded, according to the researchers, they weren’t really shocked by the results. Here’s what they found: Dogs that ate any green leafy vegetables, like broccoli, had reduced the risk of developing bladder cancer by 90 percent and the dogs that consumed any yellow – orange vegetables such as carrots reduced the risk by 70 percent. Seriously! A simple carrot helped smash the potential of cancer. However, because today’s world is ever-changing due to factory farmed livestock being fed genetically modified grains and our planet being contaminated with every type of pesticide, fungicide and larvicide, the importance of fresh, organic plant matter to help detox the body couldn’t be more crucial. And of course, all protein sources should be organic. So if the “cancer reducing benefit” does not convince you to add “human fresh foods” to your pet’s bowl, then maybe think of it this way: How bad would it be if someone forced you to eat dry processed foods your whole life? If you do not have the time to cook for your dog please check out the Lux Paws Booth at the Pinecrest Farmers Market every Sunday from 9am - 2pm and sample our Natural Dog Food and treats. And of course, with any change in your dog’s diet please consult with your veterinarian. Tami Maier, MS in Counseling Psychology, with current focus and certification on Aromatherapy for pets. ELL, IT’S THAT THE OF YEAR NEWLY DIVORCED AND single people dread, the holidays. What used to be a joyous time of year has turned into, “I just can’t wait to get through it” time of year. I get it as I have been there myself but I am also going to tell you, if you approach the holidays with a different attitude and a plan, believe it or not, you can actually not just get through it but enjoy the season. First, there is the issue of two households. Communication between you and your ex is just as important as between you and your children. Try to work out a holiday schedule that works for the children so they can spend equal time with both parents. Depending on their ages, involve them in holiday decisions as it’s about what is important for them. Take the time to listen to what they are saying and their feelings, especially if this is the first holiday as a separated family. Now, let’s talk about presents, as this is a minefield to navigate. Children want to give and please so try (keyword) not to take it personally when they come to you and ask for money to buy your ex’s girlfriend/boyfriend a present. Huge pill to swallow, I know, and depending on the age it can be handled a couple of ways. If the child is older, you can explain to him/her that now that you are divorced, you will pay for presents on your side and that their dad will pay for presents on his side. If the child is young, well, that’s a bullet you will have to take. Putting your children’s feelings first just might be the best present you can give yourself. Next on the agenda is you. Being without your children during the holidays when you have been used to having them for all the festivities is gut wrenching to think about, but times have changed and you need to change with them. The more you fight this change, the harder it will be so acceptance and planning is key. This is a transition for everyone so give it some clear thought not based on raw emotion. Have a plan in place as to what you will do during the times that the children are at your ex’s. Don’t wait until the front door shuts behind your children and you’re in tears to figure out what you are going to do. Now is the perfect time to pamper yourself and you can do it guilt-free, as you will not feel like you are taking time away from your children. On another note, you can’t stifle your emotions but don’t show your tears in front of the children. Let them enjoy the holidays and not feel guilty about spending time with the other parent. Prepare yourself to hear about the other’s home and what they did and the presents they received. Smile as you pour yourself a glass of wine. Be in the present moment, literally. Do not allow your mind to wander to past holidays or what was. Be in the moment and find something to be grateful for in that moment. Don’t focus on the fact that you are alone or that your children are at your ex’s. Focus on what you have planned out for yourself and focus on the New Year and the new opportunities that await you. Happiness is a choice and yes, you can be happy during the holidays even when you are divorced or unattached. It’s up to you. Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). She professionally coaches clients on how to avoid the breakup backlash and live better, not bitter. Three Ways To Bring Wheat Back Into Your Diet (Cont.) our body’s immunity, mood and functions, don’t you think we should be eating foods that both humans and the bacteria can digest? In one study, when folks ate a diet of processed foods, they had a 141 percent increased risk of belly fat, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar. When they ate a non-processed diet including whole wheat, they saw a 38 percent reduction in risk of the same concerns. The Takeaway: The ingredients in a healthy and digestible loaf of bread should look something like this: organic whole wheat, water, salt, starter – with no cooked oils. As for the rest of the potentially toxic ingredients unnecessarily found in most breads, avoid sugars or sweeteners, even natural ones like cane sugar, honey or molasses. Also, avoid breads with ingredients you do not recognize. If you don’t know what it is, then it’s probably best to not eat it. “The Angle”: A Strategic Approach to Looking Younger Longer BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI

T

HE PURSUIT AND MAINTENANCE OF BEAUTY CONTINUES to be the main driving force in the cosmetic surgery industry. I present “The Angle,” a minimally invasive approach for early treatment and prevention of the aging face. The progression of laxity in facial tissues leads to the aging appearance of the face and neck. Unfavorable anatomy such as a short neck, deficient mandibular length, and increased subcutaneous fat content will contribute to the unwanted appearance. Excess fat is a common problem in our society with staggering overweight and obesity statistics. Heavy necks are also a common congenital statistic as well. Historically patients with heavy necks present for treatment in their mid-to-late forties and beyond. At this point the decrease in skin elasticity has relegated them into needing a skin tightening procedure at a younger age. When faced with the prospect of a significant surgical procedure most patients make easy prey to the “non-surgical fixes” with the usual disappointing results. Non-invasive techniques such as transdermal ultrasound and lasers have promised much, but fail to deliver precise, complete and effective results. These methods often rely on heavy marketing of the unfounded dangers of anesthesia. The ubiquitous overuse of dermal fillers cannot address the heavy neck. The result is usually a heavy face with a heavy neck. Furthermore, in unskilled hands facial fillers ultimately overfill and distort the harmony of facial aesthetics. The blunt, young, cervico-mental angle and heavy jawline are reliable predictors of future neck skin laxity and the stigmata of the aging neck. A heavy neck can make a young person look older, heavier, and less attractive. If the fat is removed and the young neck is sculpted, while there is adequate skin elasticity, several positive effects are achieved. The first is the dramatic change of the patient’s appearance. They will look thinner, younger and more attractive. Second, the permanent removal of fat cells from the cervical area will decrease the weight stress on the skin significantly delaying the aging process. Also, the results are relatively resilient to weight fluctuations. What is “The Angle?” Subcutaneous Micro Derma Sculpting. Precise removal of excess fat from the neck and jaw line. This procedure achieves two goals; the removal of excess fat (sculpting the neck and jaw line) and subcutaneous inflammation causing deposition of new collagen (tightening the skin). “The Angle” can be performed under local anesthesia or with light sedation (oral or IV). The procedure should take less than one hour, in experienced hands less than 30 minutes. Patient assessment and provider training are critical to the success of the procedure. The ideal patient is between 18 and mid-40s with adequate skin elasticity. The younger patient with adequate skin elasticity, will experience immediate results. The patients will look younger, thinner ,and more attractive. More experienced providers can tackle patients with more skin laxity. While there is room for improvement in the patients with more laxity, the results will not be as consistent, or as reliable. Patient education of realistic expectations is paramount. This procedure is not, and will not, replace a true facelift in the older patient. “The Angle” is not just a fascinating procedure that makes the patient look younger, thinner, and more attractive, it is a reproducible strategic approach in delaying the appearance of the aging face.
