A New Cure For A Common Problem
A
FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen
production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-
menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

T IS HARD TO BELIEVE IT'S ALREADY TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO 2016 AND welcome in a new calendar year. We're very excited to see what 2017 has in store, but we would be remiss not to acknowledge how rewarding this year has been. We have formed amazing relationships with local businesses and individuals, and are glad to be able to call them friends. We've covered amazing events and been privileged to tell some incredible stories. We thank the community for all of the support, and will continue to work hard to make The Florida Villager the best it can be. December also means that the holiday season is in full swing. There are wonderful events taking place this month, and for a complete list, see our Events Calendar (page 8). We also invite you to read about this month's featured philanthropist, Javier Soto, and all of his great work with The Miami Foundation (page 18). And if you're tired of slaving away in the kitchen, and need a break from meal planning, be sure to check out our "Restaurant Guide" and head over to some of our local favorites this December (page 28). Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find an online version of our publication at www.TheFloridaVillager.com. We wish all of our readers a happy and healthy holiday season, and a very Happy New Year! We look forward to sharing 2017 with you! Sincerely,

Science Art Cinema Film Festival Seeks Submissions
T
HE SCIENCE ART CINEMA FILM FESTIVAL, presented by the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, announced the first-ever edition will be held on April 27, 2017 at the museum’s Frost Planetarium in downtown Miami’s Museum Park. The festival is seeking submissions through February 14, 2017 for both short science and science fiction films influenced by art, as well as short art films influenced by science and science fiction. The call is open to both fiction and nonfiction efforts as well as live action and animation. The program is designed to provide emerging, mid-career, and established filmmakers with an opportunity to share their work in a unique environment. In addition, the festival is also inviting high school students in Miami-Dade County to submit their work that will be judged in a separate category. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of science and art professionals that include actor, director and producer, Christian Slater; Filmgate Miami Executive Director, Diliana Alexander; University of Miami Psychology Professor, Dr. Elizabeth Losin; Miami Film Festival Executive Director, Jaie Laplante; co-founder of Obsolete Media Miami (O.M.M.), Barron Sherer; Frost Science Curator of Astronomy and Exhibition Developer, Dr. Jorge Peréz Gallego; and Frost Science Art and Collection Manager, Kevin Arrow. “I grew up watching Carl Sagan’s Cosmos and movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind while falling both for science and science fiction. Science has always been a deep well for the imaginations of filmmakers, all while technology has advanced the quality of the art of filmmaking. The Science Art Cinema Film Festival mixes science and art in a unique way and allows filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work in an incredible environment,” said Dr. Jorge Perez-Gallego, Frost Science Curator of Astronomy and Exhibition Developer. “As the first festival of its kind in South Florida and one of the first events to be held in the new Frost Science Planetarium, this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.” A 2014 winner of the South Florida Knight Arts Challenge and presented by Frost Science, Science Art Cinema is a popular event series supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The innovative program was designed to celebrate science and art through the lens of film, specifically 16mm motion pictures along with newly commissioned films. The films are shown in unusual spaces and are then enhanced with performances, guest speakers and multimedia presentations. Now on its fourth chapter, the program’s first season is culminating in the Science Art Cinema Film Festival. The first in the series, Science Art Cinema #1: Lasers, took place in August 2015 at the museum’s now-closed Coconut Grove location and focused on the many uses of lasers, from medical technology, to holograms and light shows. Science Art Cinema #2: Fear took place in October 2015 at the de la Cruz Collection and focused on fear and how it affects the human brain. Science Art

Javier Soto BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
THE MIAMI FOUNDATION BACKGROUND A Miamian to the core, Javier Soto grew up experiencing the city’s spirit of giving on an almost daily basis. “I grew up watching my Dad write small checks to almost every charity who sent a solicitation in the mail,” says Soto. Today, as President and CEO of The Miami Foundation, he puts that experience together with his deep commitment to the community and long tenure in politics and policy to help philanthropists of all financial abilities create personalized funds to address the community’s needs. And, as his background shows, he is well aware of the challenges and successes that come with the territory. In fact, after graduating from law school (during which he interned for a Congressman), Soto worked as a litigator in the MiamiDade County Attorney’s Office, as the County’s Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, and as Chief of Staff to County Mayor Alex Penelas. “Working in local government really put me at the grassroots level of policy making,” he says.
ABOUT THE MIAMI FOUNDATION The Miami Foundation was founded almost 50 years ago as a way to “facilitate and encourage philanthropy in Miami as a way to build to a healthier, more resilient community,” says Soto. Since then, the foundation has partnered with individuals, families and corporations to create more than 1,000 personalized, philanthropic funds and has awarded more than $240 million in grants. They manage more than $285 million. “Rather than a private foundation, we manage those philanthropic assets and we help people make smart investments in the community,” he says. “There is a lot of opportunity to improve our community across a wide range of issues.” Soto says rather than approach giving from a cookie-cutter perspective, he always asks potential philanthropists what they’re interested in personally. “If your passion is in the arts, then I want to talk to you about how you can affect the community that way,” he says. “We want to connect with the philanthropist’s passion.”
Our role is to democratize philanthropy. You don’t have to be a millionaire to start a foundation. The Miami Foundation allows people with a few thousand or many millions to leave a legacy.” 18

A DAY TO GIVE One of the Foundation’s largest initiatives is the recently-passed Give Miami Day, an annual day of giving in which donors have 24 hours to give as little as $25 to more than 650 nonprofits who partner with the project. “Give Miami is the ultimate in democratic philanthropy,” says Soto, who launched the program five years ago. “Anyone can invest in any organization that’s doing work in our community or they can donate to the bonus pool that gets distributed to all the participants.” The idea came from Soto’s desire (after hearing others question the city’s philanthropic spirit) to show the world what Miami could do. “I saw the Give Day as a potential vehicle to flip that narrative,” he says. “I have seen people flood fire stations with donations. I have seen people give to family with incredible generosity. Miami is a community that’s as generous as any other community in the country. I was very motivated to put that on display.” And he did. 2015 brought in $7.1 million, while 2016 hit more than $9 million. GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY Now that Give Miami Day 2016 is done, Soto and his team are turning their attention to the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Foundation, looking at ways to recognize the people who have supported the Foundation and the community. “Our goal is to celebrate throughout the year by recognizing those people who have left a lasting mark through philanthropy.”

Over 1,850 submissions were received from 48 states and more than 40 countries. Paolo’s film “Isolation” was screened at the AMC Empire Theaters in NY’s Times Square. Paolo, who studies at a Broadcasting Magnet Program, plans to attend college and become a filmmaker.

St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School asked members of its community to drop-off their unwanted ‘trick or treat’ candy as part of a candy drive titled “Operation Candy Corn.” Incorporating the project into the curriculum, candy was then bundled in several of the classrooms. Pieces were counted and sorted for math, bags were decorated for art, and notes were written for language arts. More than 200 bags of candy were dropped off by the St. Thomas Youth Group at Chapman Partnership for Homeless in south Miami-Dade. The St. Thomas students recognized that the children of Chapman Partnership for Homeless do not have the ability to trick or treat as others do. They wanted to share their Halloween candy, so that those children can also enjoy the holiday.

ET FIT” PALMETTO BAY COMING TO A PARK NEAR YOU As the end of 2016 draws near and we reflect on our achievements, it’s also important to set new goals for ourselves and start the New Year off right. If getting fit is important to you, why don’t you “Get Fit” with us rather than going about it alone? In its second year, “Get Fit Palmetto Bay” is a year-long series of events and programs promoting wellness, nutrition, and fitness for residents, employees, and business people who work in Palmetto Bay. It’s obvious that our community as a whole is dedicated to adopting new habits for a healthier lifestyle through the creation of numerous clubs such as the Tri-City Old Cutler Run Club and Coral Reef Elementary on the Run. Several Village events and programming focus on fitness and help equip our residents and neighbors with the essential tools they need to lead a healthier life. I invite you to participate in the Get Fit 2017 program which will be launching in January. Please be sure to keep an eye out for more information as we draw closer to our launch date. See you at the park! Please keep up with all the events, meetings and ongoing public works projects going on in our village through the official village website: palmettobay-fl.gov. I also keep up on issues through my blog found at eugeneflinn.com. My direct e-mail is eflinn@palmettobay-fl.gov.

HANKFULLY THE ELECTION SEASON IS OVER. DURING the course of the campaign, each of us as candidates took the time to refresh our knowledge of the community on a house by house basis. Now, it's time to put that knowledge back to work as we address the issues of the Village. I would like to thank the people of Pinecrest for having the confidence in me to serve as Mayor. Over the next four years, The Village Council, Staff, and I will work diligently as a team on your behalf to protect and preserve our neighborhoods, maintain our character, and enhance our quality of life. All within the envelope of one of the lowest tax rates in Miami Dade County. As residents of Pinecrest, we all came here for many of the same reasons. Large lots, tree-lined streets, and high achieving schools, have combined to form a sanctuary in the heart of an expansive and ever congesting county. Since our incorporation, we have enhanced our community to become regarded as one of the best places to live and raise a family. We have just about anything a small village could want, and by nearly all accounts we do things pretty well. Through the vision and leadership of Mayors Evelyn Greer, Gary Matzner and Cindy Lerner and the Village Councils they led, a high standard has been set. As we move forward we will strive to build upon their successes by coordinating with our public and private schools, ensuring that our police force has everything it needs to keep us safe, and by working to minimize the impact of traffic congestion on our streets. We will keep pace with the best practices related to environmental stewardship, and review our internal processes and procedures to assure that we continue to provide the highest quality of service to our citizens and businesses. It’s important that we work constructively with our surrounding municipalities, as well as our partners at the County, State, and Federal levels to make sure that we are actively advocating for our needs. We will not leave the next council to play catch up on any topic. Most of all we will be here for you should you ever need us. At any time, any place, and on any topic, please contact me, councilmembers McDonald, Ball, Kraft, and Hochkammer or Manager Galliano Gomez if you need an issue addressed. We look forward to a productive and exciting four years. I can be reached at jcorradino@pinecrest-fl.gov.

Dr. Luis Roca, Katie Fitzgerald, Dr. Edward Phillips, Dr. Joyce Miller, Dr. Joseph Venditto
OUNDED IN 1991 BY DR. EDWARD PHILLIPS, South Miami Women’s Health prides itself on its close-knit team of doctors, nurses and staff who come together as one in their commitment to personalized patient care. The team provides full service obstetrical and gynecological treatment. The Mona Lisa Touch and minimally invasive da Vinci robotic surgery are recent additions to services afforded by the group. “As a smaller practice I think we can offer a more personalized experience to our patients,” says Dr. Phillips. Though he and Dr. Joyce Miller no longer see obstetrical patients, Drs. Luis Roca and Joseph Venditto continue the practice’s long-standing history of dedicated obstetric care. “Throughout a patient's’ prenatal care, they have the opportunity to meet with both myself and Dr. Venditto. We take pride in our personal, family approach to care during the pregnancy and at the time of delivery,” says Dr. Roca. “This allows us to get to know our patients and their families on a personal, as well as professional level,” says Dr. Venditto, who also performs robotic and laparoscopic surgeries. “We

take great pride in taking care of women, and their families, through the journey of pregnancy.” Treating patients from adolescence through menopause, Dr. Miller is exposed to a wide array of gynecological issues. She performs in-office procedures such as colposcopies, both diagnostic and operative hysteroscopies and outpatient procedures including laparoscopies. "We provide comprehensive female health care with the attention and compassion our patients deserve. As a woman, I feel a connection with my patients,” she says, “I call my office my sanctuary…my comfort zone. I love what I do." The doctor's love of their chosen profession can have more than just a welcoming effect on their patients, it can inspire them as well. Nurse practitioner, Katie Fitzgerald, who worked at Sylvester Cancer center in Gynecologic Oncology as a nurse practitioner for six years, was a patient of the practice before coming on board nine years ago. Today, she focuses her daily work on adolescents and young women. She works with patients on prevention options, counseling, administering vaccinations and performing well-woman exams. “With
new advancements in gynecologic medicine every day, it's hard to narrow down a particular area that sparks my interest,” she says. “Women's health, as a whole, is advancing daily and I'm so excited to be a part of it.” Every day, the team brings their passion for women's health to their relationships with each other and with their patients. They believe in staying true to the practice's belief that true care means individual care. "I have a strong belief in involving patients in their own healthcare," says Dr. Venditto. "A patient's autonomy, in conjunction with a physician's recommendations, will ultimately result in improved outcomes." Dr. Phillips sums up the sense of dedication and personal fulfillment expressed by the physicians and staff of Miami Women's Health, "I feel so lucky to continue to see the same faces over and over, and sometimes even the faces of the next generation of the same families." South Miami Women's Health is located at 7000 SW 62nd Ave, Suite 350, South Miami, FL 33143. You can reach the office at 305-665-9644. For more information please visit SouthMiamiWomensHealth.com

A Toothache-Free Holiday and a Smiley New Year! BY MARTHA RESTREPO, SOUTH MIAMI FAMILY DENTAL
P
LANNING AND PREPARATION ARE PARAMOUNT TO HAVE a stress-free, happy holiday. Make sure you have dinner ready in time... and an extra plate setting in case you get an unexpected guest. And if you happen to be traveling, don’t forget to pack the gifts! You may have sent your dentist a Holiday Greetings card, but you are probably not planning on having his office number on speed dial, right? And your dentist is a nice fellow, he surely needs some family time too. Take note, if you are suffering of any dental issue, now is the time to take care of it, before the holiday break is here and the turkey is in the oven. A toothache-filled holiday is a quick and painful way to ruin your plans. If you're lucky, a quick call to the dentist can get you seen immediately, but what happens if disaster strikes and the office is closed, you're traveling or you find yourself in some other less than ideal scenario?
HERE ARE A FEW QUICK TIPS TO HANDLE DENTAL CRISES:
Broken tooth. First, check your tooth to assess the level of damage. Often, chipping or light cracking can be confused with more serious tooth damage. But should you find that the crack looks deep, or your tooth has broken into pieces, you may be at risk for an infection and tooth loss. Using warm water, rinse the area clean, and apply a cold compress if you notice any facial swelling. See your dentist as soon as you can. Tooth knocked out. No ifs, ands or buts about it. Time is of the essence when it comes to your chances of saving the tooth, so contact your dentist immediately. To help protect the tooth until you get to the office, rinse it very gently in water, taking care to avoid touching the root. If possible, try to keep the tooth in its original place by gently biting on gauze or a tea bag. Otherwise, place the tooth in a little bit of milk to help preserve it. Never store the tooth in water. Severe toothache. Even the mildest and most fleeting of toothaches shouldn't be overlooked, but extremely painful and persistent cases need immediate attention and could be a sign of an exposed nerve or tooth infection. To avoid aggravating the tooth any further, clear the problem area of food particles as best as you can by flossing gently and rinsing with warm water. Braces come loose. It may not sound so dire, but braces that come undone can be more than just aggravating. The wires are sharp enough to get stuck in your sensitive cheeks, gum and mouth if they come free. Avoid getting poked by covering the pointed end with cotton, gauze or beeswax. Try not to pull on the wire to avoid further complications. Something stuck between your teeth. Using your teeth to rip open packaging or chewing on a pen or pencil (all of which are dental no-no's) can cause small objects to get wedged between your teeth. While it may cause discomfort, don't reach for something sharp to dislodge it — doing so could damage your enamel and gums. Try flossing it out instead. To minimize the chance of oral trauma from occurring, follow these safety tips: »» Wear a mouthguard when playing sports or engaging in extremely physical activities »» Avoid eating overly hard foods, and cut food into bite-size pieces when possible »» Use scissors to open bags or boxes, not your teeth »» Keep objects out of your mouth, or try sugar-free gum if you have an urge to chew You can always leave your dentist a message as soon as you notice something is off. Often times someone in the office will check messages and you may get a call back sooner than expected. But no matter what you get under the tree, remember that seeing your dentist regularly is also critical to detecting and treating minor problems before they become worse. Get a checkup at least every six months or as advised by your dentist. Here’s to a toothache-free holiday season and a Happy New Year! Martha Restrepo is the office manager of South Miami Family Dental, a family practice located at 7741 SW 62nd in South Miami. The Season of Memories BY PENNY DANIELS
O
NE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES OF THE YEAR IS HERE – THE WINTER/HOLIDAY season. Whether it’s vacation time, holiday meals or religious celebrations, the hustle bustle, family gatherings, meeting with friends and reminiscing of the past – are what this time of year is all about During this season, we also remember those who have passed before us. Ahh … the memories. And if you are anything like me, many of your fondest memories are centered on laughter, family and music. Did you know that a relationship with music begins at birth, if not before? It plays a role in the formation of our identity when we are young. When the lullaby’s begin, eyes light up. Bodies start moving. Hands start clapping. Feet start stomping. And around the holidays, music is everywhere. It surrounds us! We often find ourselves walking through the stores humming to the music and signing favorite carols. Did you ever pretend to be a famous singer on stage, grabbing a “hair brush” and singing a song? Or putting a favorite song on the stereo, grabbing headsets and singing at the top of your lungs? And laughing? Ahh … the music memories.

Research have found that music is an important influence on our memories. We associate songs with emotions, people and places we’ve experienced in the past. As I remember my mother who passed away this year, I remember the songs she sang to me as a young child – “A Bushel and a Peck, and a Hug Around the Neck,” “You are my Sunshine.” And a couple of other oldies – “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Ahh … the music memories. The relationship between music and memory is powerful. Music memories are often shared with family and friends. We go to concerts. We listen together. At a party, it is something that we hear while dancing or chatting with a friend. It’s amazing that you sometimes cannot remember the words to a song, but you almost always remember the tune. The music. The sounds. As you travel this holiday season – at the stores, in your car, in your home, at a concert – listen to the music surrounding you. Sing a song. Pay attention to the special memories that arise when you hear one of your favorite oldies, it will bring back time. Find that classic song, tune your old guitar or learn how to play a musical instrument. Begin making your own music memories. Ahh … the memories! Let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you make this holiday season come alive with the sounds of music. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs, and music lessons. The Year in Numbers BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
L
ET’S LOOK AT THE NUMBERS FOR THE REAL ESTATE MARKET in Palmetto Bay, The Falls and Pinecrest for the last 365 days through November 20, 2016. In The Falls there were 533 closed sales with an average price of $430,356 and 73 days on market. The average price per square foot was $201,62. There are 256 homes listed for sale. Approximately six months of inventory based on sales in the last twelve months. In Palmetto Bay 352 closed sales took place with an average price of $520,694 and 66 days on market. The average price per square foot was $197.41. There are 171 properties for sale. Also, approximately six months of inventory. Pinecrest had 242 closed sales with an average price of $1,283,130 and 92 days on market. An average price per square foot of $311.91. There are currently 231 properties for sale. This equates to approximately 11 months of inventory. Price per square foot is only an indicator of value that blends in new homes with old homes, remodeled and not remodeled among other distinctions. You can get a more accurate assessment of value when you dig further into the details, or, ask your realtor who “lives” in those details day in and day out. Once our civic duties were past us in early November there was a noticeable pick up in buyer inquiries. The corporate transferees are beginning their searches and local buyers that are moving up or downsizing are in a hurry to get it done by year’s end. This is very promising for a strong December. In November we were blessed to see up close and personally several groups that contribute to the well-being of others. In the spirit of sharing and giving I want to bring them to your attention. The CARE Elementary school in Overtown, provides an education to local children from Kindergarten to third grade. The kids that attend receive breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack along with the guidance and leadership of teachers that are obviously passionate. It’s an inspiration to see the work of this school to break the cycle of poverty. Powerful stuff. Worth the drive and the time that you will spend there. They’re always looking for volunteers to read to these angels. We saw children learning with eagerness. What a blessing! We also visited the Sisters of the Order of the Magnificat of the Mother of God who have committed themselves to their work in Overtown. They help people in need every day and illuminate those they touch. Awesome to see their unrelenting devotion. Thank you Sister Maria and all of those in your home for welcoming our visit. In Palmetto Bay there will be a celebration for people with Unique Abilities. One goal of this initiative is to bring out the folks with disAbilities to the parks where programs will be offered for personal development and more. Another is to demonstrate the unique abilities that people have who suffer from Autism or related disAbilities and how they can be leveraged for dignified employment opportunities. This initiative is being led by Councilwoman Larissa Siegel-Lara of Palmetto Bay for the benefit of others. Kudos to you Larissa! St. Louis Catholic Church is hosting a Family-to-Family project at Christmas that helps feed over 750 families and is sponsored and worked by more than 1,100 parish families. So many people doing so many good things. Just look around. Generosity is abundant. From all of us at home we are grateful for your support and wish you, your family and loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

ELL, AT LEAST YOU WILL FEEL FAR, FAR AWAY FROM THE LIGHTS OF Miami. Camano Island, which is situated between Whidbey Island and the mainland of Washington State, is a gem I found that gave me back the serenity that I had lost in the city. With its 56 miles of beaches, quaint inns and the laid back charm of the locals; I can see why the island’s slogan is “The shortest distance to far away.” If you are looking for hustle, bustle and mucho activities, this is not the place for you. There is nothing here other than reflection time, solitude and nature. Speaking of which, my few days on the island started with check in at Camano Island Inn. I drove up to a very quaint looking inn with shingle siding and river rock. Once inside I was swept away into Nirvana. The foyer led into the small dining room with wood floors and a huge river rock fireplace. The smells wafting from the kitchen made me realize I had not eaten since early that morning. I was shown to my room, which had its own deck and a hot tub overlooking the Saratoga Passage and the beach below. My room was spacious and inviting with a canopied king bed. Like I said, Nirvana. Dinner was at 6 pm so I quickly changed and made my way to the dining room. The award-winning chef outdid himself that night. I was so impressed that such a small inn would offer up such a menu and the quality and presentation was that of New York’s finest. A glass of wine in hand, I made my way back to my deck and took in the quiet of the night. The next morning’s breakfast was equally as good as the meal the night before. Note to self: walk the beach this afternoon. There was so much I wanted to do in my few days there so off I went to Iverson Spit Waterfront Preserve. It’s a little off the beaten path but well worth it. There are one mile trail loops, bird watching and of course my favorite, beach combing. Canopy Tours NW was next on the agenda and as always when it comes to zip lining, I want to stay longer than I can. I understand their nighttime zip lining in October is to die for. As Pooh would say, there was a “rumbly in my tumbly” so I was off to Camano Island Marketplace. This is a place where there is everything you need and everything you don’t need... but want anyway. There is a butcher shop, a French patisserie (where I picked up a Raspberry Maple Oat Scone), Camano Island Coffee Roasters that has the best coffee ever, local artisan wares and eclectic décor just made it all that much more whimsical. There were old, wooden, glass panes dangling from the ceiling, an old white refrigerator that housed jars of jams and jellies and a red gas pump sitting in the corner. I can see why this isn’t just a marketplace but a gathering place for the Camano locals as well. Absolutely not to be missed is Matzke Art Gallery and Sculpture Park. Nestled among the trees is a ten-acre magical world of stone, glass, wood, metal and bronze installations. You don’t want to rush through this so please devote at least a couple of hours. My last night there I finally meandered down the grass covered walkway, past a Buddha to the beach. There was crispness to the air as I walked with only my thoughts. I passed a swing someone had fashioned with rope and a board and came upon a rock in the sand shaped like a heart. I picked it up and continued my journey until I spotted a clump of driftwood. I made a wish and gently placed the heart inside. Just as I turned around, a whale in the distance breached and then all was still again as I made my way back down the beach. NFORTUNATELY (OR MAYBE FORTUNATELY) FOR US FLORIDIANS, WE NEVER truly experience the four seasons. And, while some fashion trends may not be practical for coastal winter temperatures, many of us still yearn to wear over the knee boots and chunky knit sweaters. Well, there’s good news! Here are some South Beach-approved winter trends that won’t leave you a hot and sweaty mess this December. Crushed Velvet Slip dress: Velvet is definitely the “in” fabric of the season with its rich and plush texture. And the best part is that it’s extremely flattering and forgiving. I’m obsessed with this midnight blue velvet slip dress. It’s both sexy and comfy at the same time. It basically feels like you’re wearing a nightie! If you need a party dress for the holiday season, this is definitely the one. All you need are some heels or over the knee boots. Over the Knee Boots: If you’ve been back and forth on investing in a pair of over the knee boots, I suggest you DO IT! I’ve been following this trend for the past few seasons and, year after year, over the knee boots always reappear on the runway. They’re classic, iconic and, with proper care, will last many seasons. Of course, choosing the right pair is key. Before you start shopping, make sure to measure the widest part of your calf circumference and the distance from your heel to above your knee (basically where you want the top of the boot to hit). This will help narrow down your search. The Stuart Weitzman Highland boot is unequivocally the most sought after over the knee boots and, if you’re splurging, worth every penny of the $798 price tag. Otherwise, the Ivanka Trump Smith Over the Knee boots are a steal at $179. Off Shoulder Knits: One of the biggest problems with living in South Florida is the dramatic temperature fluctuations. It can be fifty degrees at 7am and eighty-five degrees by noon. As a result, wearing heavy sweaters can prove challenging. Forgo the heavy knits and, instead, opt for lightweight alternatives like this off-shoulder rayon blend. It’s a great way to get the winter look without the unnecessary warmth. Pleather Leggings: I love the edginess and sexiness of pleathers. The right pair will lift and tuck in all the right places without cutting off your blood supply. I know many women are wary of leggings, pleather or otherwise, but I truly believe it’s a trend worth trying. The trick is to find the right pair for your body type. Personally, I think pleathers can be worn year round because they're so versatile. Feeling self conscious? Wear them with a tunic. Feeling daring? Pair them with a button down blouse and a lacy bra peeking out. As seasons change, the list of must-have wardrobe pieces also change. In the winter, it’s all about being warm and comfortable while still remaining stylish. Incorporate these winter pieces in your wardrobe in a way that fits your individual style and body type. Because, after all, the style is in the mix and not the trend.

RICKET (10 YEAR OLD FEMALE, LEFT) AND CARMELA (16 YEAR OLD female, right) are both mixed breeds who are each missing a leg. Cricket is missing a front leg and Carmela a back leg. Carmela was adopted 15 years ago after being left at a veterinarian’s office in terrible shape from being hit by a car. Last year, Cricket was adopted from the same vet’s office after she was also hit by car. Cricket is a bundle of energy and has been the perfect match for Carmela, even putting some pep in her step. Cricket loves to ride in the car and has become a certified therapy dog. Even though Carmela doesn’t have the energy of her younger sister anymore, they’re a tag team at dinner in their quest to steal any leftover cat food. Their beds are next to each other and they love to walk around the block together. Their favorite thing to do is look cute and get some attention!

F YOU GO TO ANY PET STORE, OR EVEN TO THE LOCAL supermarket, you will see that there is an extensive selection of commercial diets available now. This trend is expected to continue since the pet food market represents a billion-dollar industry, and many companies want a piece of that market. This phenomenon makes choosing the perfect food for your cat or dog a very confusing task. Caring pet owners are left to do research and reach conclusions regarding pet diets on their own. The problem is that many times the sources of the research are not the most accurate ones, and decisions are made based on internet pet food websites, blogs, trainer/groomer testimonials or the advice of the actual person selling you the diet. When choosing an ideal diet for your pet is important to be skeptical of label claims, since many are marketing tools to distinguish the product from the other competing products in the market, and to persuade the pet owner into purchasing a more expensive product. Also, keep in mind that the ideal diet for one pet might not be ideal for another pet. The “best diet” is a relative term. With this in mind let’s review the trendier selling gimmicks: 1. GRAINS MUST BE AVOIDED A very common statement heard since the pet food industry recently began to grow into a very profitable market is “Corn and soy are fillers that cause food allergies. Gluten is also a common allergen”. This is not totally correct. Only about 10 percent of the total population of allergic pets are allergic to food; the clear majority are allergic to inhalant allergens. From that small proportion of pets with food allergy, the great majority are allergic to lactic products and animal protein (beef, chicken and fish are the most common allergy causing proteins). Corn and soy on the other hand, are important sources of carbohydrates and are rich in vegetable protein. If wheat (with gluten as protein) is avoided and replaced entirely by other carbohydrates sources such a potato or tapioca, there could be risk of gas and soft stool in certain individuals, due to the lack of the adequate fiber required for proper digestion. It is important to remember that dogs only require 20-30 percent of animal protein in their diet, while cats need to eat an obligatory 30-40 percent of animal protein. Neither one of these species require a 100 percent protein diet. Lastly, it needs to be point out that food allergy blood tests are not accurate at all for diagnosis of food allergies. For proper diagnosis, a food trial designed and closely supervised by a licensed veterinarian and performed through several months is required. 2. STAY AWAY FROM GMO’s Throughout thousands of years, plants and animals have undergo spontaneous mutations causing changes. Today, humans can manipulate the DNA of cells and modify crops and animals . It is a controversial topic since, even though there are claims of adverse effects in humans and animals, those claims have not been validated. In fact, many inaccuracies have been found in the reports suggesting adverse effects. It is known though that there are rigorous safety testing procedures before a GMO reaches the market, including evaluation of the proteins for allergies and short/long term safety testing for the consumer, among other measurements. Benefits of the GMO are reduction of soil erosion and resistance of the crops to insects, drought and disease. It is your decision as your pet’s advocate whether to avoid GMOs in the diet, however there is no evidence now that GMO’s represent a threat to

Looking Back in Order to Look Ahead BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
T
HE HOLIDAY SEASON IS BY FAR THE TOUGHEST TIME post-divorce. It is a time where we tend to lose hope, let our sadness rule our days and we forget the gains we have made in our lives emotionally since the Big D. Sometimes it takes looking back to see how far you have come. I found an old journal I kept during the painful days of my divorce and it had to do with the Christmas season. I want to share this entry because I know you will see yourself in my words, but there is a greater reason. It’s to be the messenger that there is hope, a new life will find you, and all will be right in your world again. I looked back and I saw how very far I had come. You will too.

No one ever told me how hard it would be to move on. How at every turn there is one more thing that sets you back. When money is tight, I think of how he has messed up the family, when the kids leave to go to his house or when they return with stories of what they did “over there,” it produces a reaction within me I never thought possible. The mind and heart are funny creatures. I’m not sure which one is ruling me because I don’t love him any more, but at the same time, I am sad. Sad that my dream for my kids is over. Nothing brought this home more than when I pulled out the Christmas decorations. I had four little sweater ornaments, typical Hallmark style. One says “mom,” one “dad,” one “daughter,” and one “son.” This year I had only three and that’s when I realized that I had packed up his ornaments when he left and gave them to him. The “dad” sweater was in the box. So each year three sweaters hang on the tree and each year three of something will be bought and take their place amongst the branches. The realization that there will never be a “dad” anything on my tree again made me very sad. Even if I remarry, there will never be a “dad” ornament. This, my friend, is the reality of divorce. It simply comes down to Christmas ornaments. The yearly reminder of vacations taken as a family and then the one or two you can pick out that you took with the kids after the divorce. Maybe I should split the tree – one side P.D. (pre divorce) and the other A.D. (after divorce). I sat there looking over the pile of Hallmark memories – new home, a pregnant mouse and each year’s ornament the kids and I would pick out at the Hallmark store, our Christmas tradition. Yep, they were all there except the “dad” one's, our first Christmas and the kissing rabbits. At what point do I look at the tree and see one big beautifully decorated tree instead of before and after memories glaring at me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sad that “he” is gone; my heart is heavy that my dream is gone. And there is a difference. So, I go back to decorating the tree, with the Christmas music playing, pour myself a glass of wine and remember the memories as I carefully hang each ornament. Once they’re hung, I look back and marvel at a big beautifully decorated tree. It’s at that moment it hits me – it was the process of hanging the ornaments that was so painful, each one separate in my hand with time to reflect on the memory behind it, but once it was on the tree, it lost its pain. It became only one of a whole finished product – the decorated tree. That tree was me, all the pain and the happiness tucked into its branches made it beautiful in the end. I sit down after turning on the lights and take in how beautiful it looks, and I see something in that tree I’ve never seen before. I see hope.

LEARNING
Inside STEPS: A Q & A with St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School
Head of School Lillian Issa, student ambassadors, CFO Idanet Gonzalez, and Director of Admission Debby Lichtner welcome families to a school tour.
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
E
STABLISHED IN 1953, ST. THOMAS EPISCOPAL Parish School has been around a long time and has touched countless members of our community. But, what makes St. Thomas truly special? We sat down with St. Thomas’s new head of school, Lillian Issa, and Director of Admission and Enrollment Management, Debby Lichtner to talk campus, curriculum and what makes a school a community.
HOW WOULD YOU SUMMARIZE ST. THOMAS IN A COUPLE OF SENTENCES? Ms. Lichtner: Now in its 63rd year, St. Thomas, a culturally diverse community, offers preschool through 5th grade with 425 students focused on learning 21st century skills. It operates with a foundation and focus based on our Episcopal identity, and there is a true partnership between parents, church, and school, so that we raise students to be good citizens of the world. This means that we are a community whose mission integrates spiritual formation into all aspects of the educational experience in a graceful and inclusive manner. As a school with this identity, we “strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being.”
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY THAT SETS ST. THOMAS APART? Mrs. Issa: Our teachers are the best! When speaking to parents about their child’s experience at St. Thomas, it seems to always be exceptional -- this is largely due to their child’s teacher. Our students’ lives are enriched by our ability to retain and hire quality teachers. We don’t just support our teachers in the classroom, we have a significant budget allotted for continued professional development.
on all of the technology at their disposal, so that we are preparing students for the future Additionally, with the involvement of our school counselor, our curriculum focuses on social/emotional learning as we understand the importance of mindfulness -- the less stress a child has, the more successful he/she will be. Finally, on their way to becoming global citizens, when St. Thomas graduates leave for middle school, they do so with exceptional leadership skills and the confidence that comes from knowing they have been adequately prepared for this next important chapter.
HOW IS ENROLLMENT RIGHT NOW? Mrs. Issa: Our school is stable and thriving. With an average class size of 19 children, we are at full capacity and can be selective with applicants to ensure the right fit. Our ability to retain students is phenomenal with a 3 percent attrition rate each year compared to the national average of 9 percent. And, our families are happy and satisfied as reflected in our 99-100 percent parent participation in Annual Giving!
HOW LARGE IS YOUR CAMPUS? Ms. Lichtner: Our vast 6+ acre campus is beautiful and, more importantly, it is safe-guarded every school day by a Coral Gables police officer and security guards. We have two large playing fields, a dedicated art studio, music room, dance room, STEM lab, technology lab, performance stage, expansive outdoor lunch area, a fence-and-gate system that enhances our security, and state of the art shade structures over our preschool
playground and lunch area. We will be completing our guardhouse, positioned where cars enter our parking lot, this summer.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO FAMILIES WHO MIGHT BE CONSIDERING ST. THOMAS. Mrs. Issa: St. Thomas is not just an education, it is a vibrant community that is an extension of family, creating friendships that last a lifetime. Being part of this community of learners and doers offers a unique opportunity for each to become part of something much bigger than themselves. We hope that they will visit us so that they can learn more about the opportunity surrounding the St. Thomas Episcopal School difference. We encourage them to visit our website, www. stepsmia.org, where we showcase the rich variety of programs available to our entire school community. About St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School: Located in Coral Gables, Florida, St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School (STEPS) was founded in 1963. Now in its 63rd year, St. Thomas has grown to include grades junior preschool through 5th grade and has 425 students. It is a secure and loving community that nurtures and challenges children and teaches them to honor God, respect others and themselves, care for their world, and develop a lasting enthusiasm for discovering and learning. St. Thomas utilizes the STEAM method of teaching, integrating the key areas of learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). For more information on St. Thomas, please call 305-665-4851 or visit www.stepsmia.org.
BRIEFLY TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CURRICULUM. Ms. Lichtner: St. Thomas utilizes the STEAM method of teaching, integrating the key areas of learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math). The program is challenging, taught by educators who cultivate the intellectual and artistic learning styles of each child. We have several specialized instructional facilitators to coach teachers

The Crown Difference BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
T
IS THE SEASON FOR MORE THAN JUST THE holidays. December brings with it a whole host of gift-giving opportunities as well as office, friend and family parties. And when it comes to bringing a nice bottle of wine or spirits, walking into a liquor store can become an overwhelming experience. But it doesn’t have to be. With more than six decades of history in South Florida, Crown Wine and Spirits has gained a reputation for placing its focus on it’s customers, bringing a personal touch to each one of its 12 locations. “We always greet our customers; we remember their names,” says Veronica Litton, wine director and head wine buyer for the company. “We try to remember what their purchasing habits are and identify what they like. There is a way that a customer behaves when they come into their neighborhood Crown. They feel at ease, they smile, they’re comfortable. They know that we’re there to help them.”
Expert Advice Crown’s ability to help stems from their deep knowledge of, and passion for, the industry, beginning with Litton, who rose to her current role after starting on the sales floor at Crown’s East Hollywood location 28 years ago. Though she studied business administration and hospitality in school, Litton says she soon became enamored with the wine industry, taking advantage of every opportunity to learn more and traveling the world in the name of education. “I just wanted to learn all there was to learn about wine,” she says. Litton also brought her extensive knowledge to others, heading up the company’s training program and starting a wine appreciation society for women in 1996. “Women tend to let their husbands pick the wine, but, in reality, women are better tasters,” she says.
One-Stop Shopping In addition to advice, Litton says Crown offers customers a simple answer to their toughest gifting questions. “We
have one of the most successful gift basket programs and have for more than 15 years,” she says, noting their longstanding relationships with companies and individuals. In fact, says Litton, one client relies on Crown to create more than 400 baskets each year for employee and client gifts. “We really do feature unique and gorgeous products,” she says. Crown’s gourmet buyers begin looking in January, traveling to food shows around the country to find the newest items. “People recognize a Crown gift basket, and that’s something we have built over many years,” says Litton.
Everyone's a VIP For customers who require a little something extra, Crown offers a VIP Concierge service, helping clients with everything from fully-realized mixology kits to simple boxed sets of spirits such as rum and gin put together with the mixers that complement them. Their VIP service will also work with customers who have bars or wine cellars at home—helping to curate their collections by taking inventory and filling in the missing pieces. “We can help keep your cellar up to par and guide you when you need to drink the wines,” says Litton. Regulars can also take advantage of Crown’s loyalty program, offering $5 for every 500 points collected via purchases and giving customers access to special events and email blasts.
that you may not buy on an everyday basis but that you would love to have.” Litton also suggests taking a look at the Crown baskets, which can be customized for the recipient. “Everything is handmade, even the bows, it’s well thought out,” she says. “You can do a great Martini basket or even a welcome home basket with some food items and bottles of red and white wine.”
Tis the Season So what’s on tap for this year? According to Litton one wine is clearly having a moment. “It’s crazy how much sparkling wine people are drinking this year,” she says with a laugh. It does, however, make gifting even easier. “If we know that sparkling wines, like Prosecco, are popular, you can kick it up a notch for the holidays and buy a nice bottle of champagne.” Another always-popular choice is a nice bottle of red wine, says Litton, who notes that the Crown team is always around to help make a selection. “A good bottle of red will never go to waste,” she says. Another trend that’s here to stay? Rose all day. “People are drinking more rose throughout the year, which is a natural thing for our weather,” says Litton. “When the weather gets cold you might crave a heavier wine or a port, but here the weather is so light and gorgeous I end up furnishing our stores with rose every week all year round. I’m so pleased to see it’s caught on and it’s here to stay.”
The Question of Gifts When it comes to gifting for the holidays, Litton says the easiest way to choose is simple. “I would tell people to buy something that they would like to receive,” she says. “You want to get something unique. Something

The BCC development is home to EAST Miami, the hotel has become the hottest spot in town, two residential towers REACH and RISE and two office towers. The three story retail complex is anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue with nearly 70 retail stores including Audemar Piguet, Intermix, Mirto, Chopard, Adolpho Dominguez, Giuseppe Zannoti, and Armani. Notables in attendance included Alexia Echevarria, Ugo and Sara Colombo, Yolanda and Jeff Berkowitz, Michael Comras and Daniela Swaebe, Barbara Hulanicki, and designer Rene Ruiz.

Cupid’s arrows were right on target this weekend for the fourth annual Mega Match-a-Thon adoption event as more than 300 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from the Humane Society of Greater Miami, Miami-Dade Animal Services, The Cat Network and other local rescue groups met their perfect, human matches! Hundreds of eager adopters lined up at Tropical Park on October 21, 2016 to have their “pick of the litter” from the local rescue groups and organizations. As soon as the clock struck midnight, families swarmed the pet tents as they began their quests to find the furry companions of their dreams. “It is always exhilarating to kick-off this event and watch so many amazing human and animal bonds created,” says Laurie Hoffman, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami.

Pet Food Facts and Myths (Cont.) your dog or cat’s health. 3. RAW DIETS ARE HEALTHIER The benefit of raw diets is controversial since there is no documented evidence that feeding raw diet has any health or nutritional advantages over cooked foods. The selling point that canine and feline ancestors depended on raw diets and so it’s the “natural diet” is not a strong point, since our pet’s genetic makeup and lifestyle differs from those of their ancestors. Raw diets could potentially promote growth of pathogenic bacterial contaminants, which could lead to disease not only to the pet, but also to the owner handling the diet. If feeding a raw diet is your preference and your pet is doing well on it, continue feeding it. However, consider light cooking to kill any bacterial contaminants. Each type of diet has advantages and disadvantages, and the price of the pet food does not always equates with the quality of the diet. With this in mind, when choosing a commercial diet look for a pet food company that has a long successful history in the industry, that has scientists with doctorate degrees in nutrition formulating the diets, that sources their own ingredients, and makes their own food in their own factories under rigorous quality control testing. Look for a diet that your cat or dog likes and keeps them healthy, lean, and producing normal stool with no excess gas. Consult the one person that can give you sound professional medical and nutritional advice regarding your best friend: your veterinarian. EPRESSION HINDERS THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF Americans. The hopelessness that comes with the condition devastates not only the individuals suffering from depression, but also the lives of their family and friends. But there is good news: Ketamine infusion therapy is now the newest and most effective way to treat depression. With Ketamine therapy, patients can see improvement in hours, not weeks, as opposed to current antidepressant medications. This revolutionary therapeutic method was discovered as a side effect after its use as an anesthetic. We often hear about the negative side effects of medications, but in this case, scientists have discovered a very positive side effect of ketamine. In fact, it has been used for more than 50 years as an anesthetic agent, and the WHO has declared it an essential medication. Currently, more than 20 clinics in the US deliver the groundbreaking treatment. Ketamine infusion therapy successfully treats various types of depression, such as bipolar disorder, manic-depressive depression and postpartum depression. Excellent results have also been seen in treating debilitating conditions such as obsessivecompulsive disorder and chronic pain from fibromyalgia, TMJ, or PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). Treatment centers should, of course, tailor the treatment to the condition. Traditional treatments are fully effective in only one-third of patients, another onethird have incomplete resolution of their symptoms, and the final third have no response at all. Presently, ketamine infusion therapy shows a significant improvement in 80 percent of cases. So how does it work? As with many anesthetic agents, we do not yet entirely understand how ketamine delivers such amazing results. We do know, however, that it can be tremendously effective even in refractory cases (where traditional medications have failed). Some of the research indicates that an increase in the neurotransmitter called glutamic acid repairs or reforms previously damaged or unresponsive synapses. Those malfunctioning synapses would have normally resulted in depression. The treatments involve a series of infusions performed in a controlled monitored environment. Typically, each infusion takes about an hour. During this time the patient will experience a sensation of dissociation, much like a vivid dream. Some have described this as an out of body experience. These effects are mild since the dosage used is much lower than that used for anesthesia. Many studies have reported mood improvements almost immediately, or within hours of the therapy. In general, there is a starting protocol of several infusions in a short period of time, called the acute treatment phase. This normally involves five treatments given over five days, after which the patient can look forward to “booster” infusions every few months. When seeking a treatment center, patients should prioritize one with the correct licenses and privileges to administer ketamine. Furthermore, the center should offer patients a high level of privacy and professional supervision. Ketamine Like Centers is located at 7231 SW 63rd Ave., Miami, FL 33143.
