A New Cure For A Common Problem

A

FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT of middle-aged and elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT? Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists. HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK? The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen

production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL? Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller, with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS? Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second. IS IT SAFE? A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of post-

menopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION? For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

CUBAN ARCHITECTS AT HOME AND IN EXILE: THE MODERNIST GENERATION.

DAVID REED: VICE AND REFLECTION – AN OLD PAINTING, NEW PAINTINGS AND ANIMATIONS

This scholarly exhibit will be the first to examine the lives and work of mid-20th-century Cuban architects in both Cuba and abroad. Many artifacts come from straight the personal collections of Cuban architects and their families. Lending institutions include CINTAS Foundation, the Bacardi Archives, History Miami, the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami, Miami Dade College, and University of Pennsylvania. education@coralgablesmuseum.org

David Reed is known as a colorist and for creating long, narrow abstract paintings on canvas that layer gestural marks in disjunctive ways, creating paintings that resemble collages or photographs. Often referencing Abstract Expressionist brushwork, variations on swirling brushstrokes are juxtaposed within a single painting. He will present several televisions in the space, showing scenes from the Miami Vice, into which he will have digitally inserted the painting #212. pamm.org

This show has an action-packed storyline filled with space-age family fun and technology, which deepens their connection to the performers. Through the lens of a magic telescope capable of discovering the most spectacular circus stars in the galaxy, they will join the Circus Space Fleet on a heroic mission of good versus evil to bring performers back to Earth, traveling to interstellar worlds of sand, water, fire and ice. aaarena.com

YMCA HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE South Dade YMCA staff and volunteers spent the day at Colonial Drive Elementary School to deliver a toy to EVERY (all 304) child in the school. Not only did each child receive a gift, but we took each classroom through an hour of cookie decorations, candy cane crafts, obstacle course & parachute games, and of course, an opportunity to meet SANTA! The 304 toys were age and gender specifically donated by our generous members at the YMCA. It started with the “Giving Tree” at the Y being filled with tags representing gifts for each child. Members would take the tag home and come back with a toy. From there, YMCA volunteers rallied on multiple occasions to wrap each gift so each child would get the unwrapping experience.

PMS SAYS GOODBYE TO A BELOVED TEACHER

HELP M-DCPS REINVENT ITS LOOK!

Palmetto Middle School students, teachers and parents are grieving the loss of longtime drama teacher David Nardone, who passed away in early December. Known throughout the school community, Nardone won fans with his creative take on shows like “Seussical,” “Fame” and “High School Musical,” always looking to display the talents of his students. “He introduced me to theatre, which is a huge part of my life now and he taught me not to be insecure. He made us who we are and he changed a lot of lives,” PHS sophomore Sofia Bissi told The Palmetto Panther. “He never gave up and he has inspired so many kids and changed a lot of lives. His spirit is living on in all of them.”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is launching the #MDCPSRefresh contest to create a new logo that will embody the innovative learning and teaching that takes place in our schools and classrooms. Books alone no longer represent how our students prepare for the global society we live in, and we want to make sure our brand communicates what M-DCPS truly stands for. Recognizing that logos are one of the most important aspects of a company or entity, we believe it’s time for an update to reflect our world-class brand. But we can’t do it alone, so we’re launching a contest to find the design that best characterizes our district. The contest, open to Florida residents, will earn the winner $2,500 and bragging rights. Judging will include an initial review by a selection committee and an online vote open to the community to determine finalists. Details of contest rules, submission requirements, and information on how to enter may be found at mdcpsrefresh. dadeschools.net.

HE BISCAYNE BAY DRIFT CARD STUDY (#BAYDRIFT) IS A COLLABORATIVE community science project studying the current flows in Biscayne Bay in order to better understand how trash, sewage, oil, and harmful algae blooms get transported through South Florida waters by the wind and ocean currents. The effort is led by CARTHE (Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment) at the University of Miami, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, and the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. On Friday, December 9th, 280 small, eco-friendly wood cards were released into Biscayne Bay from seven sites near downtown Miami by students from elementary to high school. The “drift cards” are brightly painted and float along the water’s surface, moved by the currents. Each card is coded so the project team can identify where it was deployed. By tracking the location where drift cards are released and found, we will learn how the currents distribute debris in Biscayne Bay. The ultimate goal of the project is to advance our understanding of the area’s flow patterns, demonstrating how the ocean and bay currents transport various substances, but also to give students a hands-on STEAM activity (Science Technology Engineering Art Math). By hosting informative art events at Vizcaya, the Ramble at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the Miami Science Barge, Nerd Nite Miami, the Key Biscayne Citizen Scientist Lecture, and Art Miami at Art Basel, as well as partnering with the youth poetry competition, Piano Slam, the backs of the drift cards are full of colorful images and inspiring poetry. Over 100 of the cards feature poems written by Piano Slam students inspired by the music Migrant Voyage by Manuel Valera and the migration of the ocean currents. The Bay Drift team hopes these eye catching additions will increase the chance of the cards being discovered and reported to the scientists. In total, ten local organizations and seven schools participated in the December 9th Bay Drift release. This is the second #BayDrift release to date. The first took place on September 12, 2016 when 38 cards were reported, some very close to the release point and some nearly 70 miles away. CARTHE scientists also released 15 biodegradable, custommade, GPS-equipped drifters, providing detailed tracks of their journey. Preliminary analysis shows that most of the drifters remained inside the Bay for much longer than some predicted. This could have important implications for resource managers and decision makers in the event of some type of spill inside Biscayne Bay. If you find a drift card, you are asked to report the location, data, time and a photo using #BayDrift or BayDriftMiami@gmail.com. For more information on the Bay Drift study, visit www.CARTHE.org/BayDrift.

The physician-recommended cap that’s clinically proven to regrow hair discreetly under a hat is now available for men and women in 3 different models. No need to endure the embarrassment of Cinderella-style headband gadgets or astronaut-type helmets. Capillus laser therapy caps prevent progression of hair loss and regrow thinning hair in a dignified manner. Made in the USA in our corporate headquarters in Miami, the Capillus82 is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence. Nothing tops it for convenience. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide. At $799, the Capillus82 is the best value you can get for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced at more than 4x as much per laser).

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Mercedes Sorensen: A Sense of Panther Pride

PAWS FOR PANTHERS

BACKGROUND

Counting three siblings and three children as Palmetto students and alum, Mercedes Sorensen was no stranger to the halls of Palmetto Senior High School (PHS). But even after years of volunteering, and six as a PTSA Board member, she was surprised to learn that the school (as well as PMS and Palmetto Elementary) employed a full-time social worker. It was because of that social worker Ana Garces, that Paws for Panthers was born when Garces alerted Sorensen and then-PTSA President Diana Reeves about a student in dire need. After losing his only living family members, the student was alone and distraught, with not much government help as he had already turned 18. Garces had fixed his living arrangements and helped him find a job, but it was not enough to cover his costs. “She told us that if we could help him for the rest of the school year, then she would be able to keep him in school,” says Sorensen. The PTSA was able to fundraise the money in addition to new clothing and other items. With this, the student was able to graduate and go on to the army. “I asked how many [other cases like this there were] and she told me that there were anywhere from 12 to 40 cases any given year just at Palmetto High,” says Sorensen. “I told her to give me her email and phone and that during the summer I was going to organize something to start helping these kids. That was the beginning of Paws for Panthers.”

ABOUT PAWS FOR PANTHERS

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

Now a line item in the PTSA accounting system, Paws for Panthers (PfP) fundraises separately from the rest of the PTSA efforts to be sure the money is solely used for the program. This also allows PfP to bypass the usual need for a majority vote as the children’s needs are often immediate and cannot wait for a PTSA meeting. Sorensen (and now-program head Helen Garcia, who took over from Sorensen) finds out about possible needs for at-risk students via the PTSA as well as keeps an eye on all important school dates and events to calculate fees and expenses that may come up. “Then, I keep an eye on all the needs of my own children at school (in order to understand what any other student might need) and maintain constant communication with the social worker,” she says. “It works likes a team; sometimes the social worker tells me of a need and other times I tell her of an event that is upcoming so that she can find out if these kids need any help.”

DEDICATION AND DONATIONS

Donation come via students, parents, alumni, local businesses and a small group of “angels” who are contacted whenever a request is made. The donations also come in various forms. “When a request is made which requires an immediate response -or can only be done with cash such as school fees, we use our monetary funds,” says Sorensen. “If clothing, shoes, feminine products, school supplies and books are needed, then we try to first locate the material donations through our donors.” And with a cost per graduating student of about $350-$450 (including prom, an Orlando trip and class picnic) it can add up quickly. “Last year we had 27 students in our program. We received about $8000 dollars in cash and goods,” says Sorensen who has collected everything from school supplies to Thanksgiving baskets and field trip fees. “This was the difference needed to keep 27 students in school and through graduation.”

A NEIGHBORHOOD CAUSE

Most of the children affected have lived in and around the Palmetto feeder neighborhoods, with circumstances forcing them to move into shelters or with friends and/or family members but remain at PHS. For Sorensen it was seeing such financial need in her own backyard that struck a chord… and has, in turn, literally changed lives. “One of our students won a full scholarship to a great university but couldn’t afford the acceptance fee,” she says. “He was going to lose a $200,000+ scholarship over a $200 admission fee if PfP wasn’t able to cover this fee…which we did thanks to our generous supporters.”

If you would like to participate in “Paws for Panthers,” or to be informed when a need arises, please contact Helen Garcia at Thegarciafamily@bellsouth.net or Mercedes Sorensen at merci4466@bellsouth.net.

PMS Turns to Crowdfunding for Auditorium Upgrades BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

OR THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY AT PALMETTO MIDDLE School, the drama and arts departments have always brought a great sense of pride. But when it came to the auditorium it was a different story. “The auditorium is almost exactly as it was in the late 80s and 90s, it’s in desperate need of upgrades,” says PTSA President Katie Abbott. “We are so lucky to have such a strong Fine Arts department, and they are deserving of an auditorium space that matches their talents.” To that end the PTSA decided to get creative, launching a Go Fund Me online campaign in late 2016. The hope is to raise the $35,000 goal (($10,000 for sound and $25,000 for lighting) to install a new system before the school’s spring shows. “We thought that a targeted fundraiser would clearly show where funds are needed and where

Photo Credits: Lena TenBroek and Naomi Tein

they would be spent,” says Abbott. “The launch of our campaign also started on one of the nights of our Holiday Show, so we were able to advertise it to an audience who is particularly interested in improving our auditorium facilities.” At press time, the campaign had raised more than $2,500 between online and offline donations, with students spreading the word throughout school as well as passing out flyers to advertise the cause. Teachers Cristina Sabina (drama), Michele Alvarez (dance) and Michele Fernandez Denlinger (music) (whome parent Linda Dwyer calls “the dream team.”) have also been an integral part of the push. “We knew at the beginning of the year that the auditorium upgrades would be a priority for the PTSA this year, and our drama teacher Ms. Sabina has been particularly active in researching what the needs are for lighting and sound upgrades,” says Abbott. Additionally, the team is encouraging alumni donations and business sponsorships (Jordan Kusch, P.A. has already signed on as a Patron Sponsor in support of the auditorium fund). “Fine Arts are integral to a school, and play such a huge role in the growth and development of middle school students. We invite and encourage the Pinecrest community to attend our spring show to see how fantastic our students are,” says Abbott.

VER THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, EVERYTHING WE WOULD like to achieve will be considered through the lens of protecting and preserving our neighborhoods, maintaining our character, and enhancing our quality of life, all within the envelope of maintaining one of the lowest tax rates in Miami-Dade County. In doing so, we will continue to coordinate with our public and private schools, assure that our police force has everything they need to keep us safe, and minimize the impact of traffic congestion on our streets. We will keep pace with the best practices related to environmental stewardship and climate change, and we will review our internal processes and procedures to assure we are providing the highest quality of service to our citizens and businesses. It's important that we work constructively with our surrounding municipalities, as well as our partners at the County, State, and Federal levels to make sure that we are actively advancing our projects, particularly when they deal with issues of infrastructure which are complex, expensive and can't be solved by us alone. We will not leave the next Village Council to play catch up on any topic.

OOKING FOR A CLASS THAT’S LOW IMPACT BUT HIGH INTENSITY? LOOK no further than Sunshine hot yoga. Owner Sam Levine has been drawing yoga newbies and veterans to his recently remodeled studio near The Falls thanks to his “one size fits all” classes and personalized attention. “Even people who have bad arthritis and other restrictions are able to come here and keep their bodies healthy,” says Levine. “You can go at your own pace.” Levine, who did much of the studio renovation himself, now presides over more than 4,000 square feet of studio space, including a brand new yoga room with stateof-the-art heating, full amenities (including showers) and a dedicated smoothie bar he hopes to have up and running soon. But it’s the mental and physical benefits students find within his walls that Levine is most proud of. “Sweating is just good for you,” he says. “I have people come in with bad joints or autoimmune issues and they see such results. It’s great for your body because you’re doing simple movements; your body isn’t having to adapt to a machine.” And as for those students who are nervous about the heat? “I’ve had plenty of people who are nervous about the heat and a few months later that same person is complaining that it’s not hot enough,” says Levine with a laugh. “The heat is just a tool to help warm up the body and it offers a mental challenge.”

THE BIG CHILL

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

LASER CENTER OF MIAMI & SPA BRINGS A (LITERALLY) COOL NEW TREATMENT TO SOUTH FLORIDA.

F

REEZING ISN’T USUALLY A WORD ASSOCIATED WITH SOUTH Florida. In fact, most people take up residence in the area for precisely that reason. But the owners of Laser Center of Miami & Spa are betting that they can turn that attitude around and make “chill” into a positive. Known for being pioneers in laser hair removal, Laser Center owners Myriam Barrero and partner Maggie Avila are now offering their loyal fan base access to CoolSculpting, the buzzy non-invasive treatment beloved by everyone from Molly Sims to the Kardashian clan. “Some people can’t go under the knife for medical reasons or don’t want to deal with the downtime of surgery,” says Barrero, who brings more than three decades of experience to her business. “They love the efficiency of the machine with no down time, returning to work or play the same day.” So how does it work? CoolSculpting, says Barrero, is the only FDA-approved nonsurgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. It relies upon “cryoliposis,” a treatment used to freeze fat cells that are then eliminated as the body breaks down the cells. Most commonly used to treat the abdomen, “muffin top,” upper back and

bra line, CoolSculpting has evolved over the past four years to now allow for 3-D cooling, with minimal suction while chilling the entire area. “It’s a fabulous device,” says Barrero, who notes that most patients require between one-to-four treatments and then about 90 days to eliminate the fat. The result? About a 25 percent reduction in fat cells per treatment. “You’re not going to lose weight in pounds,” Barrero says. “But it sculpts the body. Your pants and tops are going to fit better.” It also draws rave reviews for it’s virtually nonexistent down time, allowing patients to return to normal life immediately. And Barrero and Avila would know. Though they began with just one treatment room in a medical office, today, the women and their highly trained staff see patients from around the world at their self-standing facility on Sunset Drive. And, unlike other centers, Laser Center of Miami & Spa is one of the few facilities that does not require pre-payments, contracts, or commitments. The center also has a medical director on-staff to address any questions or concerns. . “We are here for our patients,” says Barrero. “We care and want them to be happy.” Aside from hair removal and med-spa procedures like CoolSculpting and Hydrafacials, Laser Center of Miami & Spa also offers patients traditional spa treatments such as facials and lymphatic drainage massage, but at the center of the company’s mission is always a dedication to their patients and concentration on excellence in customer service. “Our goal is to do the right thing by our patients,” says Barrero. “Money has never been our goal. We believe that if you do the right thing and you do it with love, success will follow.” Laser Center of Miami & Spa is located at 9280 Sunset Drive, Suite 102, Miami, FL 33173. Five Steps to Greater Fulfillment in 2017 BY DR. WILLIAM SCHIEMANN

I

T’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMplish in 2017. But wait! Past research tells us that 92 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail. So you might say, why bother? Instead, perhaps you should go about those resolutions in a more effective way. There are a number of reasons why resolutions fail—overly ambitious targets, peer pressure, no measures and most importantly, no real sustainable changes in behavior. But there are some secrets to resolutions that actually work. The most important one is whether they lead to you becoming more fulfilled in life. We know from our research that nearly everyone wants their lives to be more fulfilling, but 80% of people are far from it. So if you think about your plans for the New Year in light of becoming more fulfilled, you are far more likely to be successful in achieving them. Here are a few tips from those who are most fulfilled: 1. Start with your long-term goals. If you don’t have them, create them. If you have them, it’s time to reassess them. While this may feel scary, it is really the only way to plan your future. In my recent research at the Metrus Institute looking at those who were most fulfilled, we found that these folks had a vision for their life— where they would like to be later in life — what they would like to have accomplished. For Millennials, that might be a career goal or a family or relationship goal. For Xers, it might be an end of career objective (I want to become a VP in my company) or something more personal, such as taking up a new sport or hobby, or building stronger personal relationships. For recently retired Boomers, it might be bucket list items, such as visiting a country you have always wanted to see. Don’t be afraid to put a stake in the ground, you can always adjust it later! 2. What are your fulfillment drivers? Next, think about the things you do that are helping you achieve your dreams. It might be taking courses in school, dating, practicing a sport, hobby or musical instrument, or digging deeper into your religious or spiritual beliefs. Or, it might be performing well at work so that you can get that promotion or become skilled for a future job. These are your drivers of success and fulfillment. Unless you think about the connection of these drivers to your long-term vision and goals, they may all feel alike. In reality, some are always more important to your long-term fulfillment. Gut feel and what feels good at the moment may not be the best for the long haul. I didn’t like some of the courses I had to take to get my degree, but I had a vision of what the degree could provide for me in the future, so I learned to devote enough time to studying instead of playing cards with my friends as my gut would have preferred. 3. Time. Time is one of the biggest challenges to your resolutions. Remember, we all have the same amount of time each day, but some people use it more wisely. Personally, until I mapped my time for a week or so each year, I didn’t realize how much of my time was wasted in tasks that were not really helping me work toward my goals. Map your time—I’ll bet you will be surprised how it is being used. Periodically, I try to rebalance my time because we all get pulled in different directions.

THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY OPTIMAL RESULTS: 2-3 SESSIONS PER WEEK “I abuse my feet. Most mornings I run on concrete sidewalks, and then I run around work in heels (very high heels). The day after running in the last Miami Half Marathon, my legs, feet and hips were seriously aching. I tried cryotherapy and the very next morning, I felt so good, I was able to run pain-free! In fact, as long as I had a weekly session, my plantar fasciitis was gone. But driving far away for cryo was getting old, so I brought cryotherapy down to Pinecrest... And now we can all enjoy the benefits close to home. When you try it, you’ll understand why it’s so popular among not only professional athletes but also with regular people with aches and pains, like me. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.”

The Art of Camouflage BY LANETTE MARIE SCHERR

C

In some cases a client may be pressured by someone else and not emotionally ready; I do not perform work on anyone that is not 100% on board.

ONSIDERATIONS FOR THE Patient Before Having a camouflage procedure:

4. Has the client or patient finished all surgical

1. The experience level of the technician. Have they performed a tremendous amount of these procedures? Camouflage tattooing done correctly is a very advanced procedure and requires years of experience and a technician that understands pigment and skin undertones implicitly. 2. How old is the scar or disfigurement? Good candidates for camouflage or micro needling have a scar that is at least one year old that has turned white. Pink, purple or brown scars or spots are not good candidates for camouflage but can often be improved with micro needling. Laser can be performed by a dermatologist. For areola repigmentation post reconstruction, I wait a minimum of three months. 3. The reason potential client is considering

camouflage or repigmentation procedures.

or dermatological intervention to improve the scar or disfigurement? I always make sure my client has tried and exhausted other interventionary measures prior to performing camouflage. 5. Does the client have realistic expectations

about what can or cannot be done with the scar? After 19 years of doing this, I have a good idea of who is or who is not a candidate for my work, but everyone’s skin is different and results can vary from client to client for many reasons. They must realize that their skin will never be virgin again but can have a drastically improved look. 6. Are they committed to the process? The client must realize that even though this is permanently in the skin, it will fade over time depending upon lifestyle and other factors will require touch ups to keep it looking optimum. 7. Pain Management. Post mastectomy pigmen-

tation procedures in general are painless. Other types of scars may be more sensitive depending upon thickness of the scar. In some cases, clients will get a prescription from their doctor to take for the procedure, but in other cases a simple Tylenol is fine. I can usually give client a good idea of the pain they can expect for any given procedure.

Things that can hasten the fading of camouflage procedures. 1. Excessive Sun 2. Retina, Glycolic acids or other anti-aging creams used on a regular basis. 3. The general health of the client. 4. Laser treatments or peels on pigmented area can destroy the pigmented skin. New Year, Healthy You: Is Your Dental Health one of your New Year’s Resolutions? BY MARTHA RESTREPO, SOUTH MIAMI FAMILY DENTAL

W

ITH THE NEW YEAR APPROACHING, YOU MAY HAVE already begun to think about your New Year’s resolutions. Many people set goals looking to create a healthier lifestyle in the New Year. Why not make one of your New Year’s resolutions achieving your perfect smile? Good habits can keep your teeth healthy and following a good plan to take care of your oral health will give you a brighter, healthier smile in the coming year. If you want to take better care when looking after your teeth and gums this year, these six resolutions can keep you smiling:

Schedule a Dental Appointment If it's been awhile since you've seen a dentist, you're not alone. About one third of people in the U.S. don't see a dentist yearly. But remember, regular dental visits will help you be Mouth Healthy for life. A resolution to make regular visits to the dentist during the year may help prevent oral disease or reveal an existing disease in its early stage.

Start brushing 2 min 2x Always brush twice a day for two minutes for healthier teeth, fresher breath, fewer cavities, and to avoid painful dental problems.

Commit to Floss Daily Flossing is an essential part of being Mouth Healthy. Brushing your teeth twice a day just isn't enough to have a perfect smile. To take the best care of your teeth, you need to floss too. If you're not in the habit of flossing, the New Year is a great time to start.

Eat a Healthy Diet, Cut Back on Sugar Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks. Cutting back on sugar can cut your risk for tooth decay considerably. Resolve to add more orally healthy foods to your diet to solidify your diet's benefit to your teeth. For example, you can chew sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals to prevent tooth decay.

Improving Your Smile The New Year may be the right time to start or complete deferred restorative dental work, such as crowns, implants or fillings. Tooth whitening has acquired enormous popularity. Also, you can consider Restorative Dentistry or braces to achieve the healthy, beautiful smile you have always wanted. Of course, this is the type of decision you should discuss with your Dentist, since they are specialists in helping you improve your smile.

Quit Using Tobacco Products Quitting cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco use is important for improving your oral and overall health. There is no better time than the present to make a resolution to stop tobacco use. Smoking doubles your risk for gum disease, and is linked to a host of other health issues. Kick the habit! Making your New Year's resolutions as easy as possible to stick with will help you keep them. Take things one step at a time, don't give up! Martha Restrepo is the office manager of South Miami Family Dental, a family practice located at 7741 SW 62nd in South Miami. Play a Guitar – For the Fun of It! BY PENNY DANIELS

folk, jazz, reggae, rock, soul and pop. Playing the guitar is a mental and physical process. It can be played individually or in a group setting. The best thing you can do when you begin playing the guitar, is to receive lessons and watch/listen to other guitarists. You can often gain new knowledge and learn something new. Although the guitar is limited to three octaves (musical pitches), you can create a million plus unique songs. It is also one of the most convenient instruments there is. A guitar is very portable in comparison to many other instruments and can be used to play music almost anywhere. And once you learn how to play the guitar, it doesn’t take long finding others with that same interest and making music fill the air.

R

AISE YOUR HAND IF YOU HAVE EVER played “air guitar” when listening to music. Well … you are not alone. Air guitar is a form of dance and movement in which you pretend to play the guitar with exaggerated strumming and picking motions. It is often coupled with loud signing, lip-synching, fun and laughter. Playing the “air guitar” or even the guitar used in the video game “Guitar Hero” has inspired many people to start playing the guitar. This includes those without previous musical instrument experience or any musical knowledge. And for many, playing a musical instrument such as a guitar is something they have always wanted to do … it is an item on their “bucket list.” What is the guitar and how do you play it? The guitar is a popular musical instrument that makes sound by strumming or plucking the strings with one hand while pressing down the string behind the raised element on the neck of the guitar with the other. There are several different types of guitars to choose from – classical (nylon-string guitar), bass guitar, and the electric guitar – to name just a few. The guitar is recognized as a primary instrument in various types of music such as blues, bluegrass, country,

2017 – The Year of The Traveler BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

I

Tickets Start at $16! Restrictions, exclusions and additional charges may apply. Subject to availability.

AmericanAirlines Arena JAN 6 – 15

RECEIVED AN EMAIL THE OTHER DAY ASKING ME FOR SOME TRAVEL TIPS. Even a seasoned traveler like myself has learned some important lessons over the years. I have found it’s not just the practical tips, but also your mindset that can make or break a trip. 1. Don’t schedule anything that won’t be easy to get out of for the day after you arrive in the event you miss your flight. 2. Travel as light as possible. Be realistic. Are you really going to read those three books you packed? 3. Find a way to have inner peace. There will always be some glitch, small or big. Don’t let it ruin your day or your trip. 4. Along with tip number three comes patience. Let go of things you can’t control. 5. Get to the airport early. This means don’t wait until the morning of to start packing. 6. Have a toothbrush, underwear, snack, pen and paper, travel documents and lotion in your carryon. Keep a copy of your license, passport and health insurance in a separate place as well. 7. Take a picture of where you parked your car and have your hotel address and phone number saved in your phone. 8. Make a packing list. Don’t rely on your memory. Write it down. I actually make copies of it so I have one for every trip. 9. Don’t jam pack your itinerary – leave room for surprises. 10. If you travel with someone, separate your things into each other’s luggage so if a bag gets lost, you each have some of your travel items. 11. Separate your cash and a credit card and have a backup stash. 12. Don’t compare. Each place you visit offers new things. Appreciate your destination for what it is and don’t spoil your trip by comparing to another city, hotel or experience. 13. Find the local hangouts. 14. Use missed opportunities for new opportunities. Missed your dinner reservation? No problem, explore a new place. 15. Travel insurance is a must. 16. Don’t take no for an answer. If there is something you want to do, find a way to do it. 17. Take the time to engage locals in conversation. It always turns out to be a fun experience and provides some valuable information about the area. 18. Wear sunscreen. Nothing can put a damper on things more than a raging sunburn. 19. Backup your photos. You want to keep those memories in case you lose your computer or it crashes. 20. Be aware of your budget and the cost of things. Nothing is worse than going on a trip only to find out you can’t afford to really enjoy all that it has to offer. 21. And of course, let someone back home have a copy of your itinerary and stay in touch with family or friends. Traveling is a gift we give ourselves. The world is a big, beautiful, exciting place so start packing!

The Year of the Alchemist BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO

I

N SOUTH FLORIDA, WE BENEFIT GREATLY FROM THE FOREIGN nationals that find our real estate market to be a haven for their investment. As agents, we advertise in more than 900 websites, many of which target international buyers. At most listing appointments sellers want to know what strategies we will use to attract that much-sought after foreign cash buyer. In fact, many agents (present company included) have travelled and hosted events in South America looking for investors to buy in our market. Some make it their core business, especially the sales agents of new construction buildings that are growing like weeds in Miami. The foreign nationals are excellent buyers once they decide to invest in the US and in Miami, specifically. It can be quite a trek to get them to invest in a market that is foreign to them where the rules are very different than those in their own country. Consider this, would you invest in real estate in another country? That same pit in your stomach is the one the foreign national must overcome to invest here. Fortunately, they often do overcome it. Foreign nationals account for a sizable percentage of the purchases in our market when compared to other markets in the USA. Speaking of which, American buyers account for the clear majority of purchases in our specific market. That of single family homes in Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami and Coral Gables. It’s easy to understand this normal market when you consider there are local buyers that are getting into a larger home that accommodates their family better. The reverse is true, as well. In both cases, they can benefit from the portability of the property taxes from the old abode to the new one. Check out the property appraiser’s website on MiamiDade.gov to get estimates on your portability. With local buyers, there is much less resistance to invest in real estate, after all it is part of the American Dream. There is also familiarity with the area, the schools and comfort in knowing the market per se. In 2017 the trend of local buyers will continue. Zillow reports that 50 percent of today’s home buyers are under the age of 36 and 47 percent are first-time buyers. It’s happening right here, too. There are young families moving into our neighborhoods every day looking for the same things we all did when we moved here. More millennials will become homeowners, driving up the homeownership rate. Millennials are also more racially diverse, reflecting the changing demographics of the USA. Further, 52 percent of the new homeowners in the USA between 2010 and 2030 will be Hispanic. In our neck of the woods we’re ready to serve both communities. LOL, y con mucho gusto. The population growth in our areas is driven by multiple influences and it promises to continue. The impact on the quality of life in our neighborhoods is noticeable just in the number of cars on our streets. It’s time for Miami to execute the master plan that allows for convenient mass transportation to and from the major work centers. The locals love it here. The non-locals have discovered the paradise we call home and are moving in. 2017 has all the signs that indicate a very bullish market in our townships, especially because of our fellow American buyers!

UCH HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT DOGS THIS PAST YEAR, so by popular demand we are starting the new year with health advice for the cats. Cats are well known for their intelligence and independence, however veterinarians see cats as mischievous creatures prone to get into trouble even in the safest room, due to their never ending curiosity. The holiday season that has just passed past is one of the most dangerous seasons for cats, with its abundance of Christmas trees to climb, gift ribbons to swallow and breakable ornaments to step on. Hopefully your cat had a safe holiday. Let's review the important tips to continue great feline health during the new year 2017. 1. Feed a good quality diet and avoid overfeeding Obesity is the number one medical problem in pet cats in the country. Indoor cats spend a good part of the day sleeping, burning minimal amount of calories. When we add the fact that many times we provide food in the bowl at all times (in addition to those delicious high calorie treats we like to give them) then the result is a disastrous obesity problem. Feed your cat the total amount of food required to maintain the ideal weight divided in two-to-three feedings per day. Maintain treats to a bare minimum, if at all. Place the food bowl far away from the preferred place of sleep, so the cat is obligated to walk a little bit when hungry. Avoid table food. Remember, cats need a balanced feline diet and must eat daily at least 30-40 percent meat and 60-70 percent carbohydrates. 2. Provide exercise Indoor cat tend to be less active that cats that live outdoors hunting and climbing trees. Exercise needs to be encouraged to prevent obesity, maintain muscle and joint health, prevent boredom, stimulate the brain and for overall quality of life. Classic cat toys such as ping-pong balls and mechanical mice work for many cats, however some individuals need more sophisticated ways to trick them to exercise, such as laser lights and smart toys. 3. Avoid poisonous flower bouquets and plants in the house Plant poisoning is the second most common toxin that cats get into (the first one been human medications). The most poisonous plant for them are the true lilies (including Tiger, Day, Asiatic, Easter, Oriental, and Japanese Show lilies) all commonly seen in bouquets. Their ingestion can cause sudden kidney failure and death. The Calla lily and Peace lily are not true lilies, so their ingestion is not life threatening, however it can cause irritation of the mouth, tongue, throat and esophagus. Visitnoliliesforkitties.com for pictures and information on the poisonous lilies. Poinsettia plants are also dangerous, as chewing on their stems and leaves can lead to vomit and diarrhea. 4. Avoid liquid potpourri A few licks of the fragrant liquid potpourri can cause severe chemical burns on your cat’s mouth. Other symptoms include pawing at the mouth, difficulty breathing, inappetence, vomiting, retching, weakness, fever, tremors and severe organ damage. Consider incense or wall diffusers instead. Other poisonous liquid substances in the household cats accidentally ingest are dibutyl phthalate, the bitter liquid in glowing sticks and jewelry, and liquid nicotine in electronic cigarettes. 5. Keep household cleaners out of reach Many common cleaners such as kitchen/bathroom cleaners and laundry detergents can be toxic to cats. Among the most dangerous are oven cleaners, rust removers and toilet bowl cleaners. As a regular practice always wipe off any excess cleaner residue from the surfaces and do not allow the cat in the

A Free Community Celebration For The Whole Family Where: Lennar Foundation Medical Center, 5555 Ponce de Leon Blvd. When: January 29; 1-4 pm The Details: The University of Miami Health System officially welcomes the public into their newest location with an afternoon of events on January 29. Tour the new facility, meet UM Health System experts (and Sebastian the Ibis!) and experience what UM calls #humanwellbeing. And, of course, enjoy food, refreshments and entertainment as well as enter for premier prize drawings. Serving the Coral Gables campus faculty and staff, students, and residents from throughout South Miami-Dade, the facility offers all of the University’s services — from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the University of Miami Health System Sports Medicine Institute, and many other academic medical specialties — under one roof. “Today in Coral Gables, we show the world what the most convenient, compassionate, comprehensive care looks like — and will look like across the region, as we extend our vision in the coming months and years,” said Steven M. Altschuler, M.D., Senior Vice President for Health

Affairs and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Miami Health System. Hundreds of community leaders, University of Miami trustees and administrators, donors and other dignitaries helped dedicate The Lennar Foundation Medical Center (The building was made possible by a $50 million gift from The Lennar Foundation.) on November 18, ushering in a new world of health care imagined and realized by the University of Miami Health System. “This is a monumental day for the University of Miami,” Altschuler told those who had gathered for the event. “It is truly a transformational moment in the history of the University of Miami Health System, and it’s also the start of a new vision for health care in South Florida. This is a facility, this is a concept, that really thinks about the patient first.” In this new vision for health care, the patient experience is transformed into a journey of being well. “We will know you personally, care for you individually, and guide you uniquely,” Riestra says in a video Altschuler showed guests at the event. “This is not just about a new building. More important, it’s a new destination, a new experience, a new way of being well.”

Change and Be Changed BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

B

ELLS WILL CHIME, THE BALL WILL DROP IN TIMES SQUARE and the sky will be aglow with fireworks as a new year is born. The New Year ushers in time for reflection, selfawareness and resolutions. Most people’s resolutions or goals are specific things they want to do or acquire but very rarely a concept or mindset. I invite you to think on a broader scale; something that will impact all aspects of your life, and that is the concept of change and how you view it. My question to you readers, is what will you do with your new year? Will you continue to carry around old hurts and resentments? Will you choose to still see the negatives about your divorce instead of the positives? Or will you allow yourself to remain in the same place that didn’t work for you last year? This is the year to have a “Change is Good” mentality. Look at whatever is keeping you stuck or isn’t for your highest good and let it go. Breathe freshness into your home by changing up the décor. Get a new hairdo or change your wardrobe. What friends are really friends and not just people who hang around you? Life is not waiting for you. The clock is still ticking whether you are living or only existing. Choose to live each day. Change your perspective on your circumstances so you are grateful for what you have and not focused on what you have lost. Change is good. Get rid of fear, as it serves no purpose. Most of my clients struggle with fear of the unknown, losing the familiar and the change that is inevitable with a divorce. When fear creeps in, tell yourself, “Change is good” and start listing all the positives that can come with that change in circumstances. Instead of being afraid of the unknown, embrace it and look at it with anticipation instead of apprehension. Another phrase I hear quite a bit is, “We always did it that way.” Well, let me point out the obvious, you are no longer a “we” but an “I” and you are free to change things up anyway you want to. Enjoy the freedom that comes with change. Change is good. Step out of your comfort zone and do things you haven’t done. Getting in a rut is a slow and imperceptible process and once it’s there, it becomes familiar and hard to get out of. Change it up because why? Change is good. George Bernard Shaw said, “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” We all become conditioned for different reasons. Do not be a person who lives with complacency due to fear of the unknown. Nothing will damage your soul more than feeling trapped by your self-imposed limitations due to fear. We cannot change time, only what we do with it. Make 2017 your year by remembering Change is Good.

Offer is valid for up to a half acre. New customers only.

PERRINE TOYS FOR TOTS

Dr. Henry E. Perrine Academy of the Arts held its 5th Annual Toys For Tots toy drive and we are happy to report that we collected over 400 toys this holiday season. Pictured here is a small representation of the students who donated to this worthy cause along with Mercedes Diaz, coordinator, and Maria Ibanez ( Merlina the Magician).

MIA EMPLOYEES COLLECT 200 BIKES FOR KIDS

Miami International Airport employees have collected close to 200 new bicycles for local disadvantaged children to receive this holiday season. During an MIA employee holiday party, the bikes will be picked up by Miami-Dade County’s Community Action and Human Services Department, who will distribute them to registered families at its 12 service centers. MIA’s bicycle drive is part of Miami-Dade County’s 29th Annual Holiday Toy Drive.

ANIMAL INVASION DURING GULLIVER FINALS

In light of the stress that can be brought on by finals, Gulliver school's counseling and activities departments brought several kittens and puppies on campus for the students to pet and play with during their lunchtime. Research done on behalf of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shown that social interaction of humans and dogs may lead to increased oxytocin levels in both the human and the dog. In fact, interacting with a friendly dog also reduces cortisol levels most likely through oxytocin release, which attenuates physiologic responses to stress.

MIAMI DADE COLLEGE WINTER WONDERLAND

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) NorthHoliday at North, on Saturday, Dec. 10. Festivities included Santa’s grand arrival from the North Pole along with Mrs. Claus and a spectacular parade of Santa’s little helpers, s Campus presented its beloved annual winter wonderland, Children’s everal Disney characters, and riveting marching bands. Children also greeted Santa and snapped a picture with him by his chimney. Other highlights include a 12-foot mountain of snow where children were treated to a new outdoor experience of South Florida style sledding. The United States Postal Services also celebrated Christmas with a holiday stamp dedication ceremony of a new stamp featuring a traditional Nativity scene.

PTS TOY DRIVE BENEFITS MUJER

This December, more than 600 gifts were collected by the students, faculty and staff at Palmer Trinity School (PTS) to benefit the families served by MUJER (Mujeres Unidas en Justicia, Educación y Reforma). MUJER is a nonprofit communitybased social services organization that provides one-stop domestic violence and certified sexual assault center services in Homestead, Florida. The Spanish Honor Society at PTS led the toy drive for the second year in a row. MUJER’s mission is to provide a trusting environment that promotes emotional wellness and stability by empowering individuals through advocacy, direct response to domestic and sexual abuse, and support services that strengthen families.

Victoria Rios BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

S

TEAM MIGHT BE A BUZZWORD FOR STUDENTS THESE DAYS, BUT IT’S STILL impressive when theory and practice meets practical application. Gulliver Prep student Victoria Rios took app building to a truly practical place, finding inspiration in her own family for Simple Sign, her straightforward and intuitive platform for learning sign language. That initiative district ended up helping her nab a district win in the 2016 Congressional App Challenge. We sat down with Victoria to talk inspiration, coding and the future of her innovative app.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR THE APP AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Fashion Art & Music Night

After being given the assignment to make an app, I immediately thought of my younger sister, Zoe, who is nine years old. She was born with CHARGE Syndrome. This resulted in her being deaf, visually impaired and unable to speak or swallow properly. The biggest issue my family faced was being able to communicate with her. This is why I made my app, Simple Sign, an app that teaches basic sign language skills. The app is designed to be user friendly with a simple interface. It contains pictures and videos of signs along with their meaning--split up into categories. After the user has reviewed the signs, they can take a quiz on them.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN CODING AND APP DEVELOPMENT AND HOW HAVE YOU FED THAT INTEREST?

The first programming class I ever took was just last year. I didn't know much about computers when I signed up but I naturally gained interest in it. I wasn't seriously into programming until I attended the Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program during the summer of 2016. The program was eight hours a day, five days a week for seven weeks; needless to say it was big commitment. After getting a more in depth view of programming, I realized it was my calling in life. To feed my interest, I signed up for three computer classes this year: Java, C++ and AP Computer Science. My hope is to keep learning more about programming each day.

TELL ME ABOUT THE CHALLENGE AND THE PROCESS OF APPLYING AND THEN WINNING. It was pretty simple to apply to for the Congressional App Challenge. All I had to do is go to the website and enter some of my information. Then when submitting my app, I had to answer a few questions and share a video of me using the app, explaining how it works.

IS THE APP AVAILABLE NOW AND HOW CAN PEOPLE ACCESS IT? Currently, it is not on the App Store--that would be the second phase. The actual coding behind the app is completed but there are still more signs that I plan to add so I can then publish it on the web and embed it onto an app. Because I decided to make this app using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and JQuery, I can make this app available for both iPhone users and android users.

FIRST SATURDAYS, 6 PM – 9 PM Live music, art and entertainment fill the shopping, dining and business district of Coconut Grove, Miami. Neighborhood galleries, boutiques and restaurants offer special promotions, extended business hours and host to artists, designers, musicians, authors and more!

WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO DO WITH IT NEXT? ARE THERE OTHER APPS IN THE WORKS? I hope in the near future I can have my app published on the App Store, and I can add more information to the app. My goal is to assist families like mine, who has a deaf family member, to be able to build better communication among the family unit.

Five Steps to Greater Fulfillment in 2017 (Cont.) 4. Grit. One of the key factors we learned from our interviews on getting to fulfillment is that nearly everyone has key setbacks in their life—health issues, missed promotion, divorce, or loss of a long-term friend. But the most fulfilled people find a way around these setbacks. Building resilience is a key skill, but there are some tricks to making it easier. The most common one is having a great network and some really close friends. If you don’t nurture your network, it won’t be there when you most need it. Many of our most fulfilled interviewees had developed mentors, and it was those mentors who fueled their fires to get up and overcome the setbacks. 5. Take a Risk. Many of the Baby Boomers and Xers we interviewed who had been around the block a few times, said ‘take some risks, and you will be rewarded later.’ Most felt that the risks they took earlier in their careers or in relationships helped them immensely in life. Even when those risks didn’t work out, they learned a great deal that could be applied in the future. Think about what would stretch you in 2017. Asking your company for a stretch job perhaps, or take a next step in your relationship with someone. Or, many found that taking a job they weren’t totally qualified for (yet) enabled them to learn quickly and stretch their capabilities. These five steps should take you a long way to greater fulfillment in 2017 and in your life!

New Year 2017 Resolution (Cont.) room until the cleaner dries. Store all cleaners in an area out of reach to the cat. 6. Avoid exposure to human drugs The cat liver is very unique in its metabolism, making it very difficult for them to metabolize certain drugs that are safe for dogs and humans. Accidental poisoning with human medications represent the number one toxicity in cats. Some of the most deadly medications for cats are aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. If your cat ingests these drugs it can lead to gastrointestinal ulcers and sudden kidney failure. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is also common in many households. Only one tablet can be fatal to your cat. Immediate intensive treatment is required to prevent severe anemia, swollen face, difficulty breathing, liver failure and death. A commonly used antidepressant, Effexor, has a taste that attracts cats; it is extremely toxic to them. The most common scenarios of accidental ingestion of humans drugs is by eating a pill that has been accidentally drop to the ground, or by licking the residue of the liquid drug from a surface or spoon left behind. There are certain feline medical conditions that we cannot prevent such as development of diabetes, asthma, hyperthyroidism and cancer, among many others. Let's focus then on what we can effectively control and prevent, in order to prolong our cat’s length and quality of life. Let's start the new year 2017 by having the kitty undergo a comprehensive medical exam with a licensed doctor in Veterinary Medicine, because after all, the story about the nine lives is only a myth. The Psychology of Weight Loss and The Ten Commandments BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI

O

BESITY AND BODY WEIGHT ISSUES AFFECT TWO-THIRDS of the country. Every year, dieters spend more than 100 billion dollars in mostly unsuccessful weight loss schemes. The obesity epidemic and its associated medical conditions threaten to bankrupt our healthcare system on its current track. We can fix the problem, though, by addressing the main issue – a lack of attention to the psychology of eating behavior. By understanding what makes us eat (and get fat), we ensure the success of any dietary weight loss plan. I believe chief among the main reasons we fail to achieve weight control is a misguided dependence upon the psychological strength of the individual. Unfortunately, when it comes to food, almost 70 percent of the population is hard wired in such a way, that the genetic urge to eat overcomes the conscious benefit of self-control. We need to tap into the powerful force of group psychology instead to help in the battle of the bulge! In order to understand the topic of weight loss, let’s examine two main components of any dietary weight loss plan; prescription and compliance. The prescription of the diet tells you what to do. Eat so much, at such a time, etc. Compliance addresses how likely it is that someone will stick to the prescription, or diet. The majority of diets fail with compliance. In actuality, most dietary prescriptions work. If we decrease calories, eat low carbs, etc. we lose weight, no doubt about it. However, our brains have not evolved to discriminate very much when it comes to food and eating behavior. Evolutionarily, getting fat means a higher chance at survival – a concept evident in humans, as well as in many animals that store their energy as fat. The urge to eat for pleasure is directly linked to natural selection. Two million years of human evolution demand that we find high calorie foods pleasurable to eat. This behavior will cause the animal to gain weight and thereby survive to pass on its genes. We cannot ignore this silent and exigent force, equally as powerful as our need to procreate. Survival behaviors can present a challenge when it comes to people living together. Once you have a bunch of people living in the same geographical location, we must define some fundamental rules that we live by. Otherwise, natural instincts take over, and then it gets ugly. In our Western Judeo-Christian world, we abide by the ten commandments. These provide some general social rules that we collectively agree upon and will (mostly) follow. Pretty much everyone knows these; don’t kill, don’t lie, don’t desire your neighbor’s wife. They get drilled into us as children and taught to us right from wrong. Usually, people consciously try hard not to break the rules, but every so often, people won’t abide by them. So, what force keeps these rules in place? Group psychology. We, as a group, police each other. If someone gets out of line in a public area, the group as a whole will judge, or in the worst cases, shun the offender. Thus, most people tend to comply. So, if we look at getting fat as just another survival urge, then we can assume that a group approach to weight loss, where the participants are exposed to scrutiny and judgment, will effectively improve the compliance of any dietary program.
