OMEHOW ONE CAN’T HELP BUT FEEL the love in February, a month that celebrates the idea of caring and affection towards others. That’s why it is with great pleasure that we’re able to (for the third year in a row) celebrate the couples in our community who do more than just make their marriages work… they make their businesses work as well. As someone who works with his spouse myself, I can tell you it’s no easy feat to balance home life and work life, especially with two young children, but there’s no better person to share both my successes and challenges with than my wife. Elsewhere in the issue we are proud to feature two very different members of our community who are both on a mission to help others. Through her work with Miami Bridge, attorney Marlene Quintana is serving the needs of children who are in need of not just basic necessities but also caring and guidance; while middle school student Allie Gould is taking the joy of her own experiences and making sure that other children have a chance to experience the same. SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
CAROUSEL
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Olivier Award for Best Musical, and hailed by critics as one of the first truly modern works of musical theater, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Sunday in the Park with George” has become one of the most acclaimed musicals of our time. Inspired by Georges Seurat’s landmark painting Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, this poignant musical is a masterpiece about a tortured artist and his devoted muse searches for truths about life, love and the cost of creativity. arshtcenter.org
The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Carousel is a powerful ride of hope and tears. With stunning choreography and breathtaking music, Carousel was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s personal favorite of all their musicals, and was dubbed “the best musical of the 20th Century by Time Magazine. From the magical evocation of the carousel in the overture to the majestic and moving strains of the immortal song “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” this giant of the musical stage remains timeless and star bright. actorsplayhouse.org

FPL Accepting Applications for $20,000 Education Scholarship BY TFV STAFF
F
LORIDA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY (FPL) RECENTLY announced that it is accepting applications for its annual $20,000 STEM education college scholarship. The scholarship application period will run through Feb. 15, 2017. Announcement of the scholarship winner will take place in May. In 2015, FPL President and CEO, Eric Silagy announced the start of an annual scholarship that awards $5,000 annually to a high school senior who has participated for two or more years in a FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science) robotics program in FPL’s service area, has a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and has been accepted to an accredited four-year college or university majoring in engineering or information technology. Provided the student maintains a college GPA of 3.0, the scholarship is renewable for up to four years, totaling $20,000 in college tuition assistance. “This is just one way that we express our commitment to working with the communities we serve to make Florida an even better place to work and raise a family,” said Pamela Rauch, vice president for external affairs and economic development for FPL. “We’re optimistic that this scholarship will aid students with an already-bright future, and ultimately encourage

them to explore the great opportunities and benefits of a STEM career.” In its inaugural year, the first recipient of the scholarship was Boca Raton-native Myles Byrne. Myles, who was a student at Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton now attends the University of California, Los Angeles and is pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. In the fifth grade, he created a demo for his school’s FIRST® robotics team and later became a member of the Dirty Mechanics, a community-based FIRST® robotics club sponsored by 4-H that is made up of students from eight different schools in South Palm Beach and North Broward counties. With this team, Byrne attended regional, state and national competitions throughout his junior and senior years. Last year, the team’s efforts earned them a trip to the World Championship competition in St. Louis, Missouri. Across the state, FPL sponsors 50 robotics teams and also sponsors the Southeast Florida FIRST regional competition, which will be held in West Palm Beach in early March. In all, nearly 1,300 Florida schools have been touched by an FPL education program, including robotics clubs, and “Captain Wattage,” a traveling school assembly show about energy conservation. FPL has constructed
more than 125 school solar energy stations and trained nearly 600 teachers in a curriculum used in conjunction with the solar stations. In 2016, FPL hosted four STEM teachers from the School District of Palm Beach County in paid “externships.” The teachers spent the summer working alongside FPL professionals, seeing firsthand how skills acquired in STEM curricula translate into real world jobs – insights they took back to their classrooms. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide. Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Adds New GPSLike Technology to Cardiac Program BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
N
ICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IS THE SECond pediatric facility in the world to use new medical technology in cardiac procedures that is similar to global positioning systems (GPS) that motorists use to determine their vehicles’ locations on a map. The new equipment is part of the hospital’s new state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab, in which minimally invasive catheter-based procedures are performed to treat and evaluate children with congenital heart defects. The MediGuide™ Technology allows physicians to see the precise location of specially designed delivery tools and catheters enabled with miniature sensors to navigate within the heart. Using a low-powered electromagnetic field, the system enables physicians to see in real-time, a three-dimensional (3-D) image of these tools on pre-recorded fluoroscopy (a rapid series of X-ray images). Automatic adjustments are made to the pre-recorded images to compensate for changing heart rhythms, breathing and patient movement. “The longstanding commitment of The Heart Program at Nicklaus Children’s is to minimize the cumulative impact on the children in our care,” said Dr. John Rhodes, medical director of cardiology. “The MediGuide Technology supports us in this effort by reducing exposure to radiation during procedures and enhancing patient safety. It reflects our commitment to investing in the latest technology to ensure the best possible outcomes and safest practices for the children we serve.” The current standard practice for viewing devices in the heart uses continuous, live fluoroscopy, which is a rapid series of X-ray images taken throughout the course of the procedure. Worldwide, physicians perform several billion of these radiation-based imaging procedures annually and approximately one-third occur in cardiovascular patients. While the benefits of imaging provided by fluoroscopy are important, studies show that the ionizing radiation from repeated exposure to

fluoroscopy over time may compromise a person’s immune system, elevate the risk of developing cancer, or present other health hazards. By allowing the physician to track devices on pre-recorded fluoroscopy, MediGuide technology can help avoid additional fluoroscopy throughout the procedure, which in turn significantly reduces radiation exposure. The Heart Program also welcomed world-renowned congenital heart surgeon, Kristine J. Guleserian, MD who will serve as the Director of

Marlene Quintana: Building A Bridge
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
MIAMI BRIDGE YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES BACKGROUND:
The child of immigrants, Marlene Quintana says she was taught at an early age to look beyond her own life and into the community around her, leading her to begin volunteer work in grade school. “My Father always told me, ‘Haz bien y no mires a quien,” says Quintana (it loosely translates to “Do the right thing, even when no one is looking.”). “As I became older, I realized how many needs there were in the community, and felt a responsibility to become actively engaged in service and effectuating change for those who are not blessed with some of the basic things that many of us take for granted.” A chance invitation to a Miami Bridge gala 11 years ago sparked an interest in the organization, leading Quintana, now a Shareholder at GrayRobinson, to begin working with the organization (“ I fell in love with the mission,” she says.”). When her term as President of the Cuban American Bar Association ended, she joined the board and eventually began chairing the annual gala.
ABOUT MIAMI BRIDGE
Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services is the only 24-hour emergency shelter in the county that provides refuge, protection and specialized care to youth in crisis via two shelters (one Downtown and one in Homestead) and various community outreach programs. They provide abused, neglected or abandoned children under the age of 18 with everything from basic needs such as food and clothing to life skills, counseling and opportunities that may not otherwise have. “They also give them things that are absolutely priceless such as love, warmth and hope,” says Quintana. “Most children are only one caring adult away from a different path.” Unlike other organizations, Miami Bridge has, sometimes, just days to form a connection with the children who come through their doors, making all the more necessary to create an inviting home.”The average length of stay for our children is about 19 days. We have just days, not months or years, to make a difference in the life of a child,” she says. “That’s why it is so important to make them feel safe and loved and create a positive environment, so that they want to stay. We have to make immediate connections with them.”
LOOKING AHEAD
In addition to the two shelters, Miami Bridge has what Quintana calls an “incredibly active” truancy program that goes out into the Miami community as well as a “First Stop for Families” to focus on prevention. Right now the organization is looking at ways to keep children who are 17+ for an extended period of time as well as a long term goal of creating transitional housing for kids who age out of foster care and are enrolled in a school--whether high school, college or vocational. “Most people don’t understand that even though we desperately want to, we simply cannot keep a child after they turn 18,“ says Quintana. “At 18, when they age out of the Bridge foster care, most of these children are still in high school. If they don’t have a place to live, how does an 18 year old finish high school and support themselves? It is a hugely unmet need in our community, and we intend to do something about it.”
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Miami Bridge’s annual gala takes place March 18 and, says Quintana, strays from the traditional model of speeches and sit-down dinners. “It's’ an interactive and unique evening with lavish food stations, cocktails and entertainment stations,” she says. “We just allow people to mingle and have a good time with old and new friends, while supporting a great cause. Once people understand what we do, it is hard to stay away.” Aside from the gala community members can make tax-deductible donations or volunteer their time as a mentor to the children who find themselves in one their programs. Says Quintana, “If you love music, come spend some time sharing that love with our children. If you are an artist, come do projects with them. Come cook meals with our children. Come play a game of kickball or a board game with them. The possibilities for giving are endless.”
For more information on Miami Bridge and their upcoming gala visit miamibridge.org.
Miami Bridge enriches my life and my soul every single day. The board, the management team, the staff, the volunteers, the children…the work they do, the kindness I see in others, the energy and dedication, and of course, the stories. I could never enumerate the emotional gifts that being a part of Miami Bridge has given to me.” 20

VERY SUMMER, I AM FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO ATTEND SLEEP AWAY CAMP in Poland, Maine. I am able to water ski, participate in all types of arts and crafts activities, canoe, paddleboard, swim, and much more. Most importantly, I get to spend my summers enjoying time with my friends from all over the country who are indeed my second family. I am lucky enough to live a healthy life and enjoy so many things. So, last year, when I heard that my father would have to go to New York to undergo a kidney transplant, I knew that I would have to do something for people like him. If he had not had the transplant, he would have had to go on dialysis. We were lucky enough to find a living donor, and today, almost a year later, my dad is doing better than ever. I, myself, am no stranger to kidney disease. At the age of five, I was diagnosed with Alport Syndrome. Every year, I visit my nephrologist for a checkup and blood work. So far, I am lucky in that my disease is not progressing. However, there are many children who have kidney disease, who are on dialysis, or who have had transplants. In November, I celebrated my 13th birthday and my Bat Mitzvah. In honor of these two occasions, I organized a charity ride at SoulCycle in Coral Gables to help raise money for children Student at Camp Sunshine. and their families to go to Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine--just 20 minutes from my own sleepaway camp. Camp Sunshine is different from the sleepaway camps that so many people I know attend. Camp Sunshine has special sessions dedicated to specific diseases. Each session runs for one week throughout the entire summer. Not only do the kids who have different diseases get to attend, but their parents and sibling do too. Camp Sunshine offers most of the same activities that I get to participate in at my camp. Camp Sunshine offers different sessions to families whose children have battled through many difficult diseases including kidney or other solid organ transplants, cancer, and anemia to name a few. The cost to send a family to camp for one week is $2,500. Camp Sunshine is free to families and includes on-site medical care and psychosocial support. My goal was to send one family to Camp Sunshine during the solid and renal organ transplant session. Thanks to all of my friends and family, I raised more than $5,000 and am able to send not one, but two families to camp this summer. I am extremely happy that I can give these families the experience of a lifetime at this camp. I know that, for me, camp has always been an escape from reality, so I can’t even imagine how this must feel for someone that has been through so much in so little time. It is my hope to continue to host a fundraiser every November in order to raise money to send at least one family to camp every year. I hope that people will be inspired by my story and will help Camp Sunshine. If you would like more information on Camp Sunshine, please visit their website campsunshine.org. For more information on Kidney Transplants or Kidney Disease, please visit nationalkidneyfoundation.org. Allison Gould is a seventh grader at Palmetto Middle School.

RE YOU READY? LET’S GO #PINECRESTING. You may have noticed our use of #Pinecresting on social media and in other materials produced by the Village. This is our new hashtag campaign for 2017 to engage twoway communication with residents, visitors and business owners. Soon you will be seeing more signage throughout the Village at our parks and facilities, encouraging everyone to use #Pinecresting. So, what is #Pinecresting? – verb, the act of enjoying all that Pinecrest has to offer. Join us in our effort to get social and start a conversation with you through social media. We encourage everyone to use the hashtag, whether you’re enjoying Fido Sundays at Pinecrest Gardens, drone racing classes at Evelyn Greer Park, dining at your favorite Pinecrest restaurant or taking photos or video of the natural beauty of the Village. We are about to reopen our Village Parks master plan process – addressing any updates to our current parks systems. It is important that our residents participate in this process which will get underway in February. Money is tight. The Council has balked at raising user fees in the past. This means that the general taxpayer ends up subsidizing Park users; regardless of whether the users are or are not residents who pay Palmetto Bay property taxes. And these are not small numbers. Most people are surprised to hear what Palmetto Bay residents spend for police and parks. Palmetto Bay’s overall budget for this current year is $13,970,143. The Police budget is $7,578,167. The Parks budget is $1,744,585. What’s big this year in Parks? We do have a new and exciting project: our Heros Park – the Veterans Park which the committee determined should go on land obtained from South Motors. We will be taking a look at all our parks; Coral Reef, Palmetto Bay, Ludovici, Thalatta Estate and the Dog Park. The results of the master plan process could range from no changes for a particular park to a major renovation of a park that require updating/renovations.

DAY IN AND DAY OUT, MEET THE COUPLES WHO SHARE MORE THAN JUST A LAST NAME. BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
RAY AND MARY THOMAS
TNT Roofing Married: 15 Years
“The best part about working together is the additional time we spend with one another and the lunches because let's face it, food is important and you can't beat sharing a meal with someone you love. The most challenging is separating romance from business as well as the ability to accept advice or constructive criticism from one another.” --Ray
“We have learned that we each bring to the table different gifts. I have learned that my husband is really awesome at sales and is extremely passionate about satisfying each and every one of his customers. My husband says that I am a problem solver and always looking for an alternative solution when things gets tough.”--Mary
ANTHONY ACEVEDO AND MIRIAN MONTANO
Visiting Angels Married: 19 Years
“It's difficult, sometimes, having two bosses in the office, so we try to stay in our lanes of expertise, deferring to the ‘most experienced’ on a particular issue. We've found great success and personal happiness in working that way,” -- Anthony
“Working together allows us to make decisions together and spend more time together as well as gives us time to raise our children and attend to them if one of us is occupied with running the business. The most challenging part is trying not to let our personal lives or disagreements influence our work day or important business decisions,” --Mirian
FRANK AND LIEDE DeVALDIVIELSO

PAUL SILITSKY AND ANDREA LUBELL
Founders and Owners, Innergy Meditation Studio Married: 20 Years “We enjoy sharing in the joy of building our dream project (Miami’s first meditation only studio). Its’s cool to think we created something together that serves the community by reminding them to breathe, chill and be still. Meditation has had a major impact on both of us and it has changed our life in so many ways. We have learned to slow down, and appreciate the little things…. We want to share that gift with others,” -- Paul
“In launching Innergy, we’ve learned when to push each other, and when to back off. How to divide and conquer in a way that plays off each other’s strengths and minimizes the weaknesses. We bring different skill sets to the table so its helpful to get insights and opinions from one another. We’ve learned to curb unsolicited advice, which isn’t always easy when you are sharing the same office or kitchen table,” --Andrea
HOBIE BUPPERT AND CHRISTINA CHRISTINA STAALSTROM
Founders, Preppy Pimp Clothing Married: 16 Years
“Being able to live and work with someone that you love and respect is a wonderful thing. The only challenge is that it can sometimes be difficult to separate work from your personal life. There are times when we have to make a conscious effort not to talk about work…” -- Christina
“In my opinion, Christina and I compliment each other well. I think we both feel the other one is more talented, which is a dynamic that works well for us. While a lot of times I get the credit, I could do none of what I do without her. I may have the ideas, Christina actually makes them happen.” -- Hobie
TIM AND MICHELLE ALEXANDER
Trinity Air Conditioning Married: 19 Years
“We don't typically work side by side, which is probably a good thing. Working together allows us to go to lunch and have discussions on family matters on almost a daily basis. Leaving the office talk out of our home time can be challenging, but we make a conscious effort to do so.” -- Michelle
“Working together can strengthen your marriage bond since you are both working towards a common goal not only personally but also professionally. We've learned that we both can balance our home and work lives better by working together,” ---Tim
TED AND JANICE TATE
Hirni’s Wayside Garden Married: 43 Years
“I can ask Ted to do anything for me and or the business and he will do it as best he can. For example, I can call him and he will come in and deliver last minute a large and heavy arrangement all the way to Aventura... even during rush hours.” -- Janice
“What I learned about Janice while working with her is that she really cares. By that I mean that it is important to her that her customers are happy. She will tell mothers of the bride and wedding cordinators to remember the bride needs to be happy too. She cares about her employees way above the profit factor and does her best to keep everyone happy.” -- Ted

BREAKING THE MYTH
CISCA FOUNDER FRANK BALLESTE BREAKS DOWN THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF HIRING A CONTRACTOR BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
W
ITH MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF EXPERIENCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION
business, Cisca Construction Founder and Owner Frank Balleste has seen his fair share of contracting disasters. In fact, some of Balleste’s clients have landed at Cisca’s door (often via referral) after wading through years of building or remodeling work with other vendors. “We worked on a house in Pinecrest that had gone through four contractors in their bathroom,” he says. “It was $40,000 of horrific work. We came in and cleaned up the mess in two weeks.” And though bathrooms are just a small part of the Cisca empire (they handle everything from commercial to residential construction), Balleste is more than happy to share his knowledge of a business he loves dearly. “I love this business, I cherish it,” he says with a laugh. “I think about it every five seconds of the day.” Here are Balleste’s tips on how to hire a reputable contractor.
DO
Check their background. Hiring an unlicensed contractor leaves homeowners little recourse should anything go wrong on their project, making a licensed contractor a must in protecting your home and finances. “Know the difference between a contractor’s license and a business license,” says Balleste. “A lot of people say they are contractors but most are just building contractors, we’re statecertified general contractors.” Doing a quick search can also help clients see if potential contractors have had a history of disputes with clients or subcontractors.
DON'T
Rely on results. Work off of referrals when you can, says Balleste, but be sure to use your own eyes (and judgment) before you make a hire. “Talk to friends and relatives, but do a drive-by of a current project,” he suggests. “See if they’re working safely and neatly and respecting the homeowner’s property.”

DO
Know what you want. Come to the table with an idea and a plan, says Balleste. Starting the process by interviewing contractors may not only confuse you, but also cost you money in the long run. “If you have a strong idea of what work needs to be done and a good feel for the materials or function you need and want you’ll get a truer, more realistic estimate,” he says.”These days it’s very easy to educate yourself before jumping into a big project."
DON'T
Hire the cheapest guy. “Get rid of your lowest bid,” advises Balleste, who maintains that a low bid can mean they’re either desperate for the work or cutting corners. “I’m not the cheapest guy or the most expensive guy, but I’m the guy who’s going to do it right the first time,” he says. “Believe me, you would rather pay it once the right way.”
02.2017
DO
Get it writing. At Cisca, all client estimates go directly through Balleste, who says it’s important to know exactly what you’re getting into no matter what the scale of the project. “I have a set of project managers and superintendents,” he explains. “They measure and then they sit with the client to understand exactly what they want to do. We get all the information and create a plan. Our estimating team then sits down and plugs in numbers. I hate unknowns.”
DON'T
Rush into anything. Be sure to take your time and investigate all avenues, says Balleste. “It’s not just buying a coffee.” Once you’ve decided on someone be sure not to put down too much money right up front. In fact, Balleste says you shouldn’t part with more than ten percent of the job at the beginning of a renovation. “Incremental payments are completely fair to make sure no one goes running off with your money,” he explains. “You can even schedule the last payment for 30-or-so days after completion. It gives you a window to make sure nothing goes wrong and it’s completely reasonable to an experienced, professional contractor.”
DO
Understand the value of a connection. Building and renovation projects can be stressful, so it’s important to work with someone who not only understands your needs, but also matches up with your personality. “We treat each client like a family member,” says Balleste of Cisca’s outlook. “We sit down, we ask what your needs are. If anything comes up we’re there to bounce around ideas and come up with solutions. It’s one more piece of the puzzle I can give the client.”

The Touch and Sound of Vinyl BY PENNY DANIELS

USIC, TALKING AND LAUGHTER FILLED THE AIR. ALTHOUGH THE HOLIdays are behind you, the memories that were shared during this time with family and friends may still be in the back of your mind. You may have even played an old-time holiday song on your record player. You probably selected the right song on the vinyl album for the right moment. And the sound … it doesn’t compare to digital, does it? Do you remember the first record album you ever owned? Hmmm … was it the Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Seger, Elvis Presley? Are you still listening to your vinyl records? Or are they gathering dust, filling milk crates in the garage, or on a bookshelf in the living room? Do you wonder if they even make these collectibles anymore in a world that is mainly digital in nature?

In the mid-60s to the late 70s, vinyl records turned music into America’s most favorite entertainment industry. Today, a record album is a click on a computer mouse. Music downloads become a taste test for the listeners as they browse music online and then purchase a few sample songs. Then, if they like what they hear, they may buy the series of songs either on a CD or a vinyl album. According to Nielsen Music, Vinyl LP sales, which have reached an all-time Nielsen Music-era high volume of 13M units, increased for the 11th consecutive year in 2016. With digital music, the value is really in its convenience and the immediacy of its delivery, and the fact you can play it while doing something else. There’s a quiet ceremony to playing a record. It requires more dedicated listening and planning. It’s the audio quality, the visual quality, and the physical touch of the artistic, one-ofa-kind cover and vinyl album. For those of us that grew up when the vinyl record album was at its peak, it also brings back many fond memories and oftentimes a smile. Whether you are interested in learning the value of your old record albums, trading them in, or adding to your collection, let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Florida help. Keep music alive in your house and enjoy the ambiance of turning the lights down low, putting your favorite album on the record player, picking the perfect song, and enjoying the quality sound of your favorite artist. Is Your Dental Office Up To Date With The Latest Technology? BY BRIAN NITZBERG
I
N THE PAST 10 YEARS, DENTISTRY has begun to take shape as a rapidly changing field of the future. Computer technology and improved materials have evolved in leaps and bounds in terms of the quality and speed at which dentistry can be performed. This equates to less time in the chair and happier patients. Screening for oral cancer is very important, but often overlooked. Luckily, we have seen a drastic improvement in technology with the Velscope. This handheld device emits a harmless, bright blue light which is used to inspect the mouth and tongue. Unfortunately, most cases of oral cancer are discovered in late stages, when the five-year survival rate drops to around 50 percent. New research confirms that the risk factors for oral cancer have been expanded to include HPV, in addition to tobacco use, frequent and/or excessive alcohol consumption, a compromised immune system, and past history of cancer. This changing demographic presents an unprecedented call to action for oral cancer awareness and regular screenings. We can also use digital x-ray machines that allow the
images to be viewed instantly, with less radiation to the patient. The pictures are clearer and can be expanded for accurate diagnosis. When a more involved image is required for diagnosing or planning a surgery, we have 3-D CT scans that can assist us in the process. Dental photography is another modality to determine what is best for the patient. Taking photos of the face and teeth from different angles with high resolution cameras allows the dentist to determine how to build the restorations more esthetically and symmetrically. Tiny intraoral cameras allow us to visualize small areas
inside the mouth that we can then show the patient on a TV screen. This improves communication and shows what specifically is going on when the patient is not able to see what is in his or her mouth. One of the most important reasons that dentistry has improved so much in the past few years is because the materials have evolved to be stronger and more esthetic in the mouth. Porcelain restorations and white fillings bond to the teeth and in many cases can strengthen them. New materials can also more closely mimic natural translucent tooth structure. These restorations

last longer and are sometimes as thin as ½ millimeter. In most cases, no one can tell which is a real tooth or a restoration. Another exciting advance in dental technology involves scanning teeth with computers and milling same day restorations while the patient is in the chair. Scanning the teeth with a small tool is much easier than a mouth full of impression material. What once took 2-3 weeks for a lab to fabricate can now be completed during a dental appointment in less than 1 hour using CAD/CAM technology. Think of it as simply 3-D printing a crown or porcelain restoration. Patients love this convenient and predictable new type of dental care. Unfortunately, most dental offices are not taking advantage of what these technological advances have to offer their patients. The clinicians that are willing to invest the time to achieve the best results in dentistry are seeing a dramatic increase in patient satisfaction and quality of their work. Spouses Selling Houses BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
S
O, IT’S BEEN TEN YEARS OF WORKING AS A COUPLE IN SELLING REAL estate. This Valentine’s day celebration is good reason for a quick review of the pros and dare I say cons. Liede DeValdivielso has been a licensed realtor for 17 years now. When she first entered the business it was much against her husband’s (my) desire. After all, as an executive with a multinational company I saw no need for an additional activity in our already busy lives raising three wonderful children. Short cut to seven years later and she invited me to work with her instead of for another company. Much obliged! From the get go there was a plan, which included professional coaching and training with well-established real estate coaches. More importantly, she really did let me in and was even willing to let me make mistakes that in the shortterm cost us money and in the long run worked out. She truly was willing to take the high road, as is always the case with Liede. The main reason we can consider ourselves successful is that we truly work as a team in all facets of the business. We have different skill sets and we recognize that and apply the knowledge to our business. Liede is very comfortable executing contracts and seeing them through the finish line to closing. I’m comfortable negotiating the transaction and reaching agreement on terms. Liede and Frank DeValdivielso However, if a customer prefers to interact with either one of us, then that person takes the lead throughout the entire transaction. The customer is the driving force in our business and we’re thankful to adapt. The teamwork in our business has translated into other aspects in our lives. We pray together, go grocery shopping together, plan our nutrition, workout, set goals, execute our plans, hold each other accountable, work on our mindset and more. The reverse is also true, things we learn to help our relationship can also apply to the business. For example, recently we learned about “The Right Strategy” from Gretchen Rubin, whose goal is to use positive psychology in the pursuit of happiness. She suggests that by pointing out to your spouse the behaviors that you appreciate will naturally evolve into the spouse doing more of that behavior and even additional ones. The reward in positive feedback comes back tenfold. And, yes it works. In fact, it’s a way to stay on track with making each other’s day better. A little thing like emptying the dishwasher before she does is just one example. Easy to do, too easy not to. In business, when we pay close attention to our customer’s need and really get on their side, the customer truly is right, it makes for a very strong relationship. Understanding what is right for them is the guide to getting them to their next step. Sometimes, it includes the customer not selling their home for the price the market is willing to pay. Others, the customers do make the adjustment knowing full well we’re really watching out for their interest. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to work in business with my best friend and that our business has grown to include two of our children. We can work together and sustain our family. The Keyes Company, Realtors and the Pappas family have made it possible. Oh, and there are no cons… Wishing you and your loved ones a Valentine’s day filled with gratitude and admiration for one another.

All You Ever Wanted To Know About Cats’ and Dogs’ Vision BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

ATS AND DOGS VISION COMPONENTS ARE THE ABILITY to perceive light and motion, visual perspective, vision field, visual acuity, color vision and depth perception. If you have looked into this topic, you may have discovered that there is not much literature about it. Perhaps this is because our pets do very well in their ecological niche, making the need to investigate further into cats and dogs visual ability is less of a priority. Yet, there is much curiosity about the topic. With the advances of science, the understanding of our animals’ vision capabilities have improved. Here are the most common question that doctors in veterinary medicine encounter almost daily.
Do cats and dogs see like we do? Just like us, our pets have binocular vision. The image they see is the superimposition of the image seen by each individual eye, creating a depth perception. On the other hand, the images they see are blurry. Dogs have a 20/75 vision, and cats a surprising 20/100-200 vision. A reason for this is that our domesticated animals do not rely on a sharp vision to survive. As a point of comparison, natural selection has given wolves excellent visual acuity, since they rely on the sharpness of their vision to hunt and survive. Dogs and cats have sharper sense of smell, taste and hearing than us. And, in addition to their vision this heightened sensorial perception allows them to better investigate their surroundings. Being crepuscular creatures, cats have developed adaptive features on the anatomy of their eyes that allow for a better vision at night, when compared to their dogs and human counterparts.

Yes, they can actually watch TV. In the past, with the old TV sets that would only produce only 50 frames/second, dogs could only see photos flashing rapidly. This is because dogs require at least 70 frames/seconds to perceive a moving, flowing image. Nowadays, with the High Definition TVs, which produce a higher amount of frames/second, dogs are able to enjoy TV. There are several YouTube channels, and at least one cable channel, specifically for dogs. Based on anecdotal stories heard by veterinarians everywhere, some dogs LOVE to watch TV, and even have favorite shows. Dogs are more likely to react to an animal on TV when it is a real animal -

Yes, they see colors, however different ranges than us. Dogs have dichromatic vision. They only can see two colors: yellow and blue. This is comparable to humans with red-green color blindness. For dogs, the rest of the primary colors look like dirty yellow tones. They do have the capacity to distinguish closely related shades of grey that are indistinguishable to the human eye. Cats on the other hand, can see yellows, blues, greens and limited tones of red. This will explain why it is difficult to train a dog to distinguish toys by color, or distinguish a red traffic light from a green one, or why dogs are not too impressed with the delicious multicolor food we just purchased for them.

Puppy Love BY TAMI MAIER

LOVING PET CARE IN YOUR HOME OR MINE
S VALENTINE'S DAY IS APPROACHING SOME OF US GET VERY EXCITED with the giddy anticipation of flowers, heart shaped chocolates, fine wines and champagne. As a single mom a lot of my Valentine's days have been spent at home with my kids and of course my fur children. Spending Valentine's days with my dogs and clients dogs has taught me a lot about Love over the years, certainly a love that is far greater than flowers or candy and I hope that we all get to experience this kind of love in our lifetime!
1. Love is Unconditional. My dog loves me no matter what, in their eyes I am perfect no matter what I look like or what I am going through. 2. Love Changes You. No matter how much your heart has been broken the love of a dog will soften you on the inside. 3. Love is Patient If you have ever owned a dog you know what I am talking about, housebreaking, chewing, digging, etc... learning to be patient as your dog matures can be hard but no one can look into their big brown eyes and stay angry. 4. Love Never Gets Tired. No matter how tired or comfortable my dogs may be on the couch, when I come home all tails are wagging and no one is short on kisses. 5. Love Shows Compassion. Dogs are kind souls, full of compassion and love. In times I have been upset my dog is the first one to comfort and cuddle with me. 6. Love the Moment you Are In. Dogs teach us to live in the moment. Our dogs do not have a big master plan. They are not worried about the past and they are not scared of the future. They live right here in the present moment. 7. Love is Pawsitive. As the bumper sticker says, "Wag more, bark less." 8. Love the Journey. When I see the sheer joy on a dog's face while it's head is sticking out of the car window I realize, that is the way life is meant to be lived! 9. Puppy Love. Puppy love is fun and exciting but it is only after a dog has lived a good life that we really realize all of the wonderful things they brought into our lives. As with us a new relationship is fun and exciting but true love last a lifetime even through the ups and downs. Let your dog show you the ropes till that special person comes along and one that your dog approves of, of course! 10. Love Forgives. You know the moment when you pull the shoe out of your dog's mouth that they so badly want to play with. But the next moment they are by your side eager to please you in any way they can. Always Forgive! So Smell the roses and close your eyes and breathe in the fresh air. Put your phone down and fully experience your life today as your dog does everyday! Summer Fun in New England BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
B
ELIEVE IT OR NOT, SUMMER IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER AND WITH IT comes the yearly summer family vacation. As parents, we are very well aware of the cardinal rule; if the kids are happy, the parents are happy. A vacation with kids is the best vacation if strategically planned based on age and interest of the children. Since kids would rather do than see, sometimes it becomes a challenge for us parents. Here are some exciting places in New England that will spark an interest in your children and put some zing in your family vacation. New England encompasses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. With its vast array of history and breathtaking beauty, New England offers several places that are sure to bring fond memories. New Hampshire – Lake Winnipesaukee is all about family gatherings by the lake. There are cottages, water activities, moonlit swims and even an old fashioned drive in. True quality family time. Maine – For the outdoor oriented family, Acadia National Park offers 47,000 acres of tide pools, lakes, forests and mountains. Looking for a classic, sleepy New England seaside village? Don’t pass up Ogunquit. For more of a selection of activities, Bar Harbor has it all. Vermont – Lake Champlain is your consummate lake retreat and spectacular for exploring and relaxing. There is even a Champlain Coast Wine Trail for the parents. Smuggler’s Notch is the quintessential family destination. There are lawn games, arts and crafts, pools, water park, nature walks and much more. A trip to Vermont would not be complete without visiting the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory. Rhode Island – Newport’s Cliff Walk is breathtaking. As you walk its 3.5-mile shoreline, you are transported back to an era of Gatsby mansions once owned by America’s most elite families. Connecticut – Mystic Seaport is a recreated 19th century maritime village. It houses the largest maritime museum in the US. The Mystic Aquarium, Olde Mistick Village, boat tours, Fields of Fire Adventure Park and even a Seaside Shadows Ghost Tour will leave your kids exhausted at the end of the day. And last, but certainly not least, is my home state of Massachusetts. This state is brimming with history, architectural beauty, interesting towns and relaxing seashores. From Plymouth Plantation to walking the Freedom Trail in Boston, to picnicking in the Boston Commons along with The Boston Children’s Museum, a hands on museum that will mesmerize your children, your family will never be bored. A stop in Salem to stroll the streets of “The City of Witches” cannot be left off the itinerary. Boarding a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard and having a true old-fashioned beach vacation will go down in the annals of your family photo albums. Note of warning: the Flying Horses will end up being a daily occurrence. The bottom line is, no matter where you choose to spend your vacation in New England, as long as you are with your family, it will be a time to remember. THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY OPTIMAL RESULTS: 2-3 SESSIONS PER WEEK “I abuse my feet. Most mornings I run on concrete sidewalks, and then I run around work in heels (very high heels). The day after running in the last Miami Half Marathon, my legs, feet and hips were seriously aching. I tried cryotherapy and the very next morning, I felt so good, I was able to run pain-free! In fact, as long as I had a weekly session, my plantar fasciitis was gone. But driving far away for cryo was getting old, so I brought cryotherapy down to Pinecrest... And now we can all enjoy the benefits close to home. When you try it, you’ll understand why it’s so popular among not only professional athletes but also with regular people with aches and pains, like me. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.”

Anthony Acevedo of Visiting Angels of Miami BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
T
EN YEARS AGO ANTHONY ACEVEDO SAW THE future. While he and his wife, Mirian Montano, held management positions with a large bookseller, he knew that the business climate at the time was unstable and that his position would eventually be downsized. With Montano’s family already in the home health field the two looked to what they knew and decided to take the leap to work for themselves. “We looked at different businesses in the ‘home care’ arena but found that Visiting Angels stood out as being the most altruistic company offering services to adults and the elderly,” says Acevedo. Today, Visiting Angels of Miami serves families across Miami-Dade, finding quality home care help for everything from Alzheimer’s and Dementia care and private duty care to assistance with running errands, shopping and hygiene. But finding the right caregiver isn’t always easy, nor is putting trust in a stranger to care for a family member. We sat down with Acevedo to explore the mechanics behind this sensitive industry, his recruiting methods and why he loves his work.
WHERE DO YOU RECRUIT YOUR HOME CARE WORKERS AND WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN TERMS OF PERSONALITY TRAITS? We ask that those who register with us be a Florida certified nurse assistants with at least a minimum of two years’ experience in the field. The state of Florida also requires that each individual have a digital FBI level background screening. Many of our best caregivers recruit their co-workers or friends in the field. The caregivers feel that our staff is working hard to give them great opportunities to work with good families. Above all we look for compassion and caregiving as a vocation, not just a job. It may sound simplistic but
having elderly parents, we look to see if this person could take care of them, if needed
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CONCERNS OF YOUR CLIENTS AND HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THEM? Most families want to know if the caregivers are experienced, background screened, reliable and can communicate well. We do a lot of work to recruit caregivers who meet those criteria, however, the clients all have an opportunity to meet and interview each candidate before services begin. We find that our “choose your caregiver” policy has worked well. Most of our caregivers stay with families for a year or more.
ARE YOU EMPLOYING ANY NEW TECHNOLOGIES OR SYSTEMS WITHIN THE INDUSTRY? We use the iPad and cloud-based software to ensure that the caregivers and the families are on the same page with schedules and care Visiting Angels owners Anthony Acevedo and Mirian Montano. plan issues. We also utilize an industry-based satisfacand “Provider of Choice” awards the last three years. tion management company called Home Care Pulse to survey our clients and caregivers monthly on our WHAT MAKES YOU MOST overall performance as a service provider. We’re proud PROUD OF YOUR WORK? to say that our office has won “Leader in Excellence” Families reach out to us to find a way to keep their loved ones at home. We provide that solution by sending experienced, qualified, caregivers that they can choose to assist them. Most times that support is enough to give their loved ones the safety and quality of life. It also gives the primary family caregiver some respite and peace of mind so they can take care of their own health. When families tell us that they both appreciate that an “angel” is there to help, we know we’ve done our job well.
WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BUSINESS? We know that a “senior tsunami” is coming, in terms of the baby boomers hitting 65 by the thousands on a monthly basis. We’re hopeful that the workforce can keep pace with the increasing demand. We remain confident that our Visiting Angels Miami office will be able to recruit and register the best and most caring individuals in the area. Visiting Angels of Miami is located at 9990 SW 77th Ave., Ste. 328. For more information, call 305-728-3153 or go to www.visitingangels.com/miami.

Being Mindful Through a Divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
W
ALKING THE PATH OF DIVORCE IS MIND NUMBING. There are days when we wake up and we are already counting the hours till we can go back to bed. All we can think about is our pain, what needs to get to the attorney or the accountant and how are we going to keep it together. Getting a divorce can take years in some cases so it’s important to be very mindful of living (not just surviving) our life in the process. Your thoughts create your life so here are some I would like for you to commit to memory, not just to use during your divorce but for life!

Cat and Dog Vision (Cont.) not a cartoon version-, when the movie has been filmed at the eye level of the dog, and when the TV is low at the level of the dog. Cats can see well-defined images on TV. And, because cats are attracted to rapidly moving objects against a steady background, watching TV is very attractive to some cats.
Can they experience vision problems? Our cats and dogs, just like us, develop systemic diseases that when left untreated can affect vision. Examples of these are diabetes mellitus, hypertension and cerebrovascular accidents (strokes). Ophthalmic disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma and dry eye are extremely common in dogs and cats, and can be more common within certain purebred lines. It is important to recognize signs of vision deficiency in our cats and dogs, such as hesitance to go up/down stairs, missing a target such as when trying to jump on your bed, lack of recognition of family members (growling) until they are close enough, not realizing when a toy is placed close to them, lack of interest in chasing a moving object, or standing in the same spot longer than usual, among other behaviors. Any of these behaviors will warrant a visit to your pet’s veterinarian to diagnose and manage the vision disorder early. Board certified veterinary ophthalmologists are available to diagnose and treat more complex ophthalmic disorder. And let’s never forget that due to their sharp senses, cat and dogs missing one eye, or that are blind, can have great quality of life as long as they are kept in a protected environment such as a warm and loving home. Dr Marta Sanchez-Emden is the founder of the Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami. She has been practicing Veterinary Medicine in Miami for over 20 years. As a Certified Veterinary Journalist, she is the resident veterinarian for various national TV shows. She authored the book “CHIHUAHUAS : How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend,” available on Amazon. BESITY AND BODY WEIGHT ISSUES AFFECT TWO-THIRDS of the country. Every year, dieters spend more than 100 billion dollars in mostly unsuccessful weight loss schemes. The obesity epidemic and its associated medical conditions threaten to bankrupt our healthcare system on its current track. We can fix the problem, though, by addressing the main issue – a lack of attention to the psychology of eating behavior. By understanding what makes us eat (and get fat), we ensure the success of any dietary weight loss plan. I believe chief among the main reasons we fail to achieve weight control is a misguided dependence upon the psychological strength of the individual. Unfortunately, when it comes to food, almost 70 percent of the population is hard wired in such a way, that the genetic urge to eat overcomes the conscious benefit of self-control. We need to tap into the powerful force of group psychology instead to help in the battle of the bulge! In order to understand the topic of weight loss, let’s examine two main components of any dietary weight loss plan; prescription and compliance. The prescription of the diet tells you what to do. Eat so much, at such a time, etc. Compliance addresses how likely it is that someone will stick to the prescription, or diet. The majority of diets fail with compliance. In actuality, most dietary prescriptions work. If we decrease calories, eat low carbs, etc. we lose weight, no doubt about it. However, our brains have not evolved to discriminate very much when it comes to food and eating behavior. Evolutionarily, getting fat means a higher chance at survival – a concept evident in humans, as well as in many animals that store their energy as fat. The urge to eat for pleasure is directly linked to natural selection. Two million years of human evolution demand that we find high calorie foods pleasurable to eat. This behavior will cause the animal to gain weight and thereby survive to pass on its genes. We cannot ignore this silent and exigent force, equally as powerful as our need to procreate. Survival behaviors can present a challenge when it comes to people living together. Once you have a bunch of people living in the same geographical location, we must define some fundamental rules that we live by. Otherwise, natural instincts take over, and then it gets ugly. In our Western Judeo-Christian world, we abide by the ten commandments. These provide some general social rules that we collectively agree upon and will (mostly) follow. Pretty much everyone knows these; don’t kill, don’t lie, don’t desire your neighbor’s wife. They get drilled into us as children and taught to us right from wrong. Usually, people consciously try hard not to break the rules, but every so often, people won’t abide by them. So, what force keeps these rules in place? Group psychology. We, as a group, police each other. If someone gets out of line in a public area, the group as a whole will judge, or in the worst cases, shun the offender. Thus, most people tend to comply. So, if we look at getting fat as just another survival urge, then we can assume that a group approach to weight loss, where the participants are exposed to scrutiny and judgment, will effectively improve the compliance of any dietary program.
