FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF MIDDLE-AGED AND elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT?
Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.
with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS?
Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.
HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK?
IS IT SAFE?
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?
HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION?
The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller,
A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

Made in the USA in our corporate headquarters in Miami, the Capillus82 is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence. Nothing tops it for convenience. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide. At $799, the Capillus82 is the best value you can get for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced at more than 4x as much per laser).

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

O NOW YOU’VE CLEANED YOUR CLOSETS like a pro… but what to do with all the, ahem, leftovers? Consign it, says Jennifer Kaloti, owner of Pinecrest’s The Recycled Closet. A longtime consignment shopper, Kaloti opened The Recycled Closet in 2008 and soon became a go-to source for South Florida fashionistas, earning accolades including AOL City’s Best, CBS 4 Miami Best Thrift Shop in South Florida 2010, and Miami New Times Best Thrift Shop 2013. “Consignment is a great way to make a little extra money without any hassles,” says Kaloti. Here are her tips for making the most of your closet. What are the best items to consign? We are a middle market store, so we take trend labels, everything from jeans, tops, jackets and formal gowns to handbags, shoes and jewelry. We like things from chain stores, department stores and boutiques. What is the criteria for a good consignment item? If you loved it at one time maybe someone will too! Just make sure it's freshly laundered or dry cleaned and free from stains and tears. We typically look at 20-50 items at a time. Just bring them neatly folded in a shopping bag. How does the consignment process work? Call or email us to make an appointment and we will look at your things on the spot and decide what we can sell. We enter everything in a database and if and when it sells you will receive 40 percent of the selling price. What items are you looking for right now? It's prom time! We are now accepting long gowns appropriate for high school girls, along with accessories such as shoes, evening bags and jewelry. We even have some men’s suits from J Crew, Zara and Calvin Klein... and will accept similar suits in perfect condition.

Ask the Expert: Organized by Aly
A
LY FINKELSTEIN HAS A PASSION FOR ORGANIZATION… BUT IT’S NOT EXACTLY what you think. The New Jersey-based organizational expert isn’t just driven by the visual satisfaction of de-cluttering, she’s onto something deeper, bringing her experience and eye for order to families near and far and allowing them to live with less, while creating more time for family, friends and, well, life. Taking inspiration from her “neat freak” Dad, Finkelstein has grown her business, Organized by Aly (organizedbyaly.com), to include clients from across the Northeast as well as in South Florida, helping them with everything from room transitions and home staging to executive office organization and wardrobe storage. She even offers clients moving support via “The Organized Move.” We spoke with Finkelstein to get her take on getting started, her favorite products and the one room we all seem to ignore. What’s the best way to start spring cleaning? Pick a designated spot. The closet is oftentimes too daunting for people, so pick one category: shoes or swimwear, for example. How do you decide what to keep, what to donate and what to toss? Once you’ve decided what you are going to focus on take all of those things out so you can see them. For example, remove every pair of shoes from the closet. Then clean the shelves. Once you have done that look at each pair and be very honest with yourself about what you will truly enjoy wearing again. If it's old, dirty or beat up give it away or throw it away! What’s your best advice for clients who have a hard time parting with their “stuff?” It’s often very hard to part with expensive or sentimental things, but if you are not going to wear or use the item again it is important to part with it. Space is limited (even in the largest of closets!) and making room for the things you love should be a main priority.
What are some of your “goto” products for organizing? The Container Store has a line of clear storage boxes called "our storage boxes." I am obsessed with how easy they stack, how clean they look and how inexpensive they are. I use them on every single one of my jobs! What’s the room most often neglected? The laundry room! It really should be home base for neatness and organization. I tell clients to start with a blank slate and try to keep only the essentials in the laundry room. What has been your most challenging job? The most challenging jobs are the ones where clients are reluctant to part with belongings but have a vision of a calm, serene space. Often, people have four-to-five times the amount of items in their home for the space they have. I never want anyone to feel like I am forcing them to part with their belongings, but I know that reduction is an essential component of organization.
MARCH 2017
What’s your best piece of advice for clients? Don’t overstock your home; it’s not a store. Keep the things you love and part with the rest. We live in a time where you can literally have anything you need within 24 hours... having 14 bottles of shampoo clog up your closet is unnecessary and very hard to keep neat. How did your company come about? I have always been a neat freak. My favorite activity is cleaning out my closet, basement and pantry. When my second child was 18 months old I had a strong itch to go back to work, but felt compelled to only leave my kids to do something I truly loved. When I realized being a professional organizer was a real thing I was amazed at my luck! I am so fortunate to spend my days doing something that does not feel like work to me!

Preparing Students for Life Beyond College BY DANA KIRCHOFF, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, DIVINE SAVIOR ACADEMY
W
hat if high school was more than getting into a great college? What if high school was about preparing students for life? Divine Savior Academy answers these questions every day for its students in ways that are both obvious and subtle. Walking into Divine Savior’s building, you notice that student life is everywhere. Posters advertising upcoming activities line the walls, and TV screens in the large Commons area roll pictures of recent student accomplishments. It’s obvious that Divine Savior provides the opportunities needed for a high school student to get a complete education. Collegeprep academics, competitive athletics, and fine arts programs develop a student’s college resume, while Student Council, National Honor Society, student journalism and a multitude of student-led clubs are just some of the opportunities that add to that resume. "Running the botany club has helped improve my time management," says Susanna Peca, DSA student and club leader. “I know I’m learning skills now that will help me for years to come.” With alumni attending prestigious universities such as Cornell, MIT, and Vanderbilt, it would be easy to assume that college-prep academics are the heart of this private school. While the college counseling
program is robust and supportive for students and parents alike, there is something more at the heart of Divine Savior Academy. “We are a college-prep school, but we’re also a life-prep school,” says Head of Schools Tim Biesterfeld. “We want our students to not just be prepared for college, but for life beyond college. It means being prepared to be a husband or wife, a parent, a colleague, a citizen, and a friend. We want our students to have every opportunity at the college level, but we also want them to be prepared for life beyond college.” It’s this long-range view of students and their lives that is at the heart of Divine Savior Academy. It’s not just about academics, it’s about training students for life. “We know that high school is often the last four years that a student is under a parent’s roof. And there’s so much to be taught in these years of transition: independence, life skills, resilience, responsibility, and decision-making,” says High School Principal Ben Troge. “But most of all, we want our students to have the tools to lead fulfilling, meaningful lives and to know how much God loves them.” Beyond the long roster of activities and the collegeprep curriculum that drives day-to-day activities, Divine Savior Academy provides a Christian environment in which students learn life lessons. Weekly chapel services and teacher mentors encourage a student’s spiritual development. Administration focuses on creating a positive school culture that not only fosters responsibility, but also kindness, respect, and empathy. Divine Savior has developed several programs that cultivate these character traits. Every summer students may apply for Divine Savior’s annual mission trips. Students have traveled to Antigua to paint a school and rebuild a blind man’s home. Last summer, they traveled to Peru to serve as translators for a charitable organization that donates food and supplies to in-need families. “The experiences that students have on these trips are invaluable. Not only do they develop a student’s worldview, they prepare students for
18
lives of service. When students experience the joy of giving, it sticks with them. They are always excited to do more,” says Pastor Carlos Leyrer, President of Divine Savior. But students don’t have to travel overseas to learn about the joy of giving; there are plenty of opportunities right in their own community, as evidenced by Divine Savior’s latest student program called “DSA Gives Back.” Each month, a group of students led by a Divine Savior teacher get together to do a random act of kindness in the city of Doral. Before Christmas they brought cookies to City Hall. In January, students gave away milkshakes to families at the local Chick-fil-A. “We can’t forget the simple things,” says DSA Gives Back Coordinator, Ginger Poulos. “Sometimes they have an impact beyond anything we can imagine and all the little things add up to so much. At the heart of this program is the realization that our children need to be given opportunities to learn this for themselves. Doing simple acts of kindness help students learn empathy, kindness, and the value of service.” Divine Savior Academy has campuses in Doral and Delray Beach, Florida. As a “Christian academy dedicated to excellence,” Divine Savior focuses on giving students college-prep academics in a Christian environment through supportive teachers. Marlene Quintana: Building A Bridge
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
MIAMI BRIDGE YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES BACKGROUND:
The child of immigrants, Marlene Quintana says she was taught at an early age to look beyond her own life and into the community around her, leading her to begin volunteer work in grade school. “My Father always told me, ‘Haz bien y no mires a quien,” says Quintana (it loosely translates to “Do the right thing, even when no one is looking.”). “As I became older, I realized how many needs there were in the community, and felt a responsibility to become actively engaged in service and effectuating change for those who are not blessed with some of the basic things that many of us take for granted.” A chance invitation to a Miami Bridge gala 11 years ago sparked an interest in the organization, leading Quintana, now a Shareholder at GrayRobinson, to begin working with the organization (“ I fell in love with the mission,” she says.”). When her term as President of the Cuban American Bar Association ended, she joined the board and eventually began chairing the annual gala.
ABOUT MIAMI BRIDGE
Miami Bridge Youth & Family Services is the only 24-hour emergency shelter in the county that provides refuge, protection and specialized care to youth in crisis via two shelters (one Downtown and one in Homestead) and various community outreach programs. They provide abused, neglected or abandoned children under the age of 18 with everything from basic needs such as food and clothing to life skills, counseling and opportunities that may not otherwise have. “They also give them things that are absolutely priceless such as love, warmth and hope,” says Quintana. “Most children are only one caring adult away from a different path.” Unlike other organizations, Miami Bridge has, sometimes, just days to form a connection with the children who come through their doors, making all the more necessary to create an inviting home.”The average length of stay for our children is about 19 days. We have just days, not months or years, to make a difference in the life of a child,” she says. “That’s why it is so important to make them feel safe and loved and create a positive environment, so that they want to stay. We have to make immediate connections with them.”
LOOKING AHEAD
In addition to the two shelters, Miami Bridge has what Quintana calls an “incredibly active” truancy program that goes out into the Miami community as well as a “First Stop for Families” to focus on prevention. Right now the organization is looking at ways to keep children who are 17+ for an extended period of time as well as a long term goal of creating transitional housing for kids who age out of foster care and are enrolled in a school--whether high school, college or vocational. “Most people don’t understand that even though we desperately want to, we simply cannot keep a child after they turn 18,“ says Quintana. “At 18, when they age out of the Bridge foster care, most of these children are still in high school. If they don’t have a place to live, how does an 18 year old finish high school and support themselves? It is a hugely unmet need in our community, and we intend to do something about it.”
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Miami Bridge’s annual gala takes place March 18 and, says Quintana, strays from the traditional model of speeches and sit-down dinners. “It's’ an interactive and unique evening with lavish food stations, cocktails and entertainment stations,” she says. “We just allow people to mingle and have a good time with old and new friends, while supporting a great cause. Once people understand what we do, it is hard to stay away.” Aside from the gala community members can make tax-deductible donations or volunteer their time as a mentor to the children who find themselves in one their programs. Says Quintana, “If you love music, come spend some time sharing that love with our children. If you are an artist, come do projects with them. Come cook meals with our children. Come play a game of kickball or a board game with them. The possibilities for giving are endless.”
For more information on Miami Bridge and their upcoming gala visit miamibridge.org.
Miami Bridge enriches my life and my soul every single day. The board, the management team, the staff, the volunteers, the children…the work they do, the kindness I see in others, the energy and dedication, and of course, the stories. I could never enumerate the emotional gifts that being a part of Miami Bridge has given to me.” 20

The Beauty of a
SMILE T
HEY SAY A SMILE IS WORTH A THOUSAND words, but for some the journey to a beautiful smile isn’t so easy. Boasting decades of experience and more than 5,000 smiles created, the doctors and staff of Miami Center for Orthodontics and Doral Center for Orthodontics are dedicated to make a lasting, positive impression on patients and ensuring the process is as easy and enjoyable as possible. The centers dedicate themselves to creating a warm and relaxing family-oriented practice, while embracing the latest technology and holding themselves to the highest standards of sterilization and sanitation. That means on-site digital panoramic and cephalometric X-ray machines and an iTero intraoral digital scanner. State-of-the-art technology offers multiple benefits to patients, including faster, more accurate diagnoses and faster, more comfortable treatment. The staff is led by Drs. Enrique Gallo
and Carlos Fernandez-Feo, who both bring experience and expertise beyond orthodontics to their practice. “My engineering training has helped me understand quite well the mechanics of tooth movement and facial orthopedics, which gives me an advantage in treating patients with more complex conditions,” says Dr. Gallo, who applies his training complex and challenging cases like patients with cleft lip and palate, as well as treatment of patients with major dentofacial deformities as well as traditional orthodontics. Dr. Feo, as well, brings ongoing knowledge via continuing education and involvement in professional organizations. In addition to offering patients everything from traditional braces to In-Ovation self-ligating braces,
clear braces, and Invisalign (and Invisalign Teen), the Centers work to create a patientcentric atmosphere with Saturday hours and late evening appointments. “We strive for excellence and are passionate about helping our patients achieve the smile they have always dreamed of,” says Dr. Gallo. The Doral Center for Orthodontics is located at 10830 NW 58th St., Doral, FL (in the Sedano's Shopping Center). The office can be reached at 786-845-0800. Bocas House BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
I
T SEEMS YOU CAN’T SCROLL THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA FOR MORE THAN A minute these days without diners from across South Florida posting images of the amazing (and gravity-defying) milkshakes being served up at local favorite Bocas House. The restaurant, which draws equal crowds for it’s made-from-scratch Venezuelan and Peruvian cuisine, has become somewhat of a phenomenon… and for good reason. We sat down with the restaurant’s Executive Chef and Founding Partner César González to talk shakes, social media and the importance of home cooking.
YOU’VE GOTTEN FAMOUS ACROSS SOUTH FLORIDA FOR YOUR AMAZING MILKSHAKES! HOW DID THEY COME TO BE? Innovation defines us, the creative presentation of our milkshakes is fundamental for us and for that we have a pastry specialist, Wilfredo Ulacio, who makes them not only delicious but super attractive. Likewise, we put a lot of effort into our social media outlets to stay connected with our community. The social media accounts of Bocas House (and Bocas Grill) have become a point of reference in customer service. Our community is constantly growing and interacting and we are continually telling them about our creations.
I READ THAT YOU SELL SOMETHING LIKE 1,800 SHAKES EACH WEEKWHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE SO INTRIGUED AND HOW HAS IT IMPACTED BUSINESS SINCE YOUR OPENING LAST FEBRUARY? We attribute it to our position as the pioneer restaurant in Miami known for establishing a new style of milkshakes without having to compromise the taste and quality of the ingredients we use... and also creating special editions of our milkshakes now and then!
MILKSHAKES ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT YOUR ONLY OFFERING, TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT THE FOOD THAT YOU SERVE. We offer a fusion of Venezuelan and Peruvian cuisine following the gastronomic line of Bocas Grill, our predecessor restaurant; this time through an evolved, more elaborate experience to create flavors that feel like home. We have unique dishes inspired by typical Venezuelan and Peruvian food, grills, ceviches, specials and sangrias, all made with fresh and organic ingredients.
YOU STRESS A STRONG DEDICATION TO QUALITY, FRESH INGREDIENTS. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOUR DINERS AND WHY DO YOU PLACE SUCH AN EMPHASIS ON THAT? It all has to do with our mission, we want to offer those who visit us the taste of home, a warm feeling and comfort food, and we understand that this is only possible using the best ingredients. We are genuinely committed to offering the best quality and achieving the best dishes, which is why we work with fresh, organic ingredients that are endorsed as Premium (the best quality in the market) by the USDA.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BOCAS HOUSE? ANYTHING NEW OR EXCITING COMING UP? A lot of new and exciting things! We do not stop exploring, which means we are constantly including new creations and reinterpretations of traditional Peruvian and Venezuelan dishes in our menu. Every month we have special editions of our milkshakes to celebrate special dates and events. Innovation is the key to Bocas House. Also, we have a new Bocas House coming soon in Weston!
Bocas House is located at 10200 NW 25th St # 101 in Doral. Sun-Thu: 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Fri-Sat: 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. For more information, please call (786) 401-7071 or visit bocashouse.com.

6 Tips for Facing the Flu BY DR. GUSTAVO FERRAR
W
ITH THE RECENT FLU EPIDEMIC SWEEPING OUR NATION AND THE closure of schools around the United States, we want to help you arm yourself against these nasty bugs! There are affordable OTC’s and easy steps you can take to help prevent and fight against these illnesses naturally, even before you get a sniffle.
We focus on “natural” in many of these tips because most over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are combined with other unnecessary medication. We tend to think that more is better so we go for the ones labeled “Max” or “Extra Strength” and those are the ones usually combined with medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). Too much acetaminophen can damage your liver. Every year over 80,000 people go to the emergency room due to overdose of acetaminophen and 25,000 get hospitalized. So, stay away from combination medications—you don’t need them.
WE’RE HIRING!
Try these 6 Tips when facing the flu season:
Advertising Account Executive
»» Tip 1: Basic things first—consider the Flu vaccine and wash your hands frequently. »» Tip 2: Take a good blend of immune support herbs such as echinacea, goldenseal, astragalus, and andrographis, available in any health food store. The best one and my favorite is tropical sage, unfortunately it is not widely available. »» Tip 3: keep your nose clean moist. Use Xlear saline nasal spray with xylitol to wash away microbes right in the nasal passages and reduce bacterial adhesion! This one is a must. »» Tip 4: Probiotics, or “good bacteria”, help the immune system as well as the digestive system, so make sure you are taking those regularly. »» Tip 5: Drink ginger tea with lemon and honey. The best method is to simmer ginger slices to bring out the antibiotic effect. Add lemon and honey, each add to the cold and flu-prevention effect and makes it taste delicious. »» Tip 6: Garlic is also a strong antimicrobial and can be minced and sautéed to enhance a variety of meals. Or mince it and add it raw to salsa for a delicious and health-boosting treat. Working these six simple and easy to use tips into your regular health routine in the classroom, work, and at home will help prevent colds and flu, and keep you one step ahead this season. Gustavo Ferrer, MD FCCP, is an experienced pulmonologist trained both in Cuba and the US, founder of the Cleveland Clinic Florida Cough Center and president of Intensive Care Experts based in Weston, Fla. You can learn more about natural remedies in Dr. Ferrer's new book “Cough Cures:The Complete Guide to the Best Natural Remedies and Over-the-Counter Drugs for Acute and Chronic Coughs”
