FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF MIDDLE-AGED AND elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT?
Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.
with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS?
Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.
HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK?
IS IT SAFE?
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?
HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION?
The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller,
A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

Spring is Here! I
T’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SPRING IS AROUND THE CORNER. AND -- ALONG with some gorgeous weather — spring brings with it the promise of a new start, making it the perfect time to clean house and get organized. Easier said than done, of course. This issue we delve into the dos and don’ts of spring cleaning, bringing readers expert advice and the latest tools and tricks to keep your closets clean and your sanity intact. Need a truck to haul your junk? There’s an app for that! Need a storage box that can double as a cooler? We found it. And when you’ve piled up your excess we have just the place to make a little extra cash. Elsewhere this issue we meet Neal Roth, whose status as a founding member of Pinecrest’s Temple Bet Shira spurred him to dedicate much of his free time to creating and building a legacy for not just his family, but other Jewish families in South Florida. His work to secure a safe, inviting and inclusive space over the past three decades is an inspiring story no matter where you worship. On a similar note, we were thrilled to cover the incredible achievements of our local schools—both public and private—in everything from sports to academics and to spotlight the pressures that go along with those successes in our Student Corner column thanks to Palmetto student Sabrina Garcia. Voting is well underway for The Florida Villager’s Best of the Best Reader’s Choice Awards. This is a Special Edition that will be coming out in May. The physician-recommended cap that’s clinically proven to regrow hair discreetly under a hat is now available for men and women in 3 different models. No need to endure the embarrassment of Cinderella-style headband gadgets or astronaut-type helmets. Capillus laser therapy caps prevent progression of hair loss and regrow thinning hair in a dignified manner. Made in the USA in our corporate headquarters in Miami, the Capillus82 is FDA-CLEARED and has no known adverse side-effects, so you can use it with confidence. Nothing tops it for convenience. Wear it just 30 minutes every other day. Unlike laser comb type devices, Capillus lasers require no effort from the user - making it a preferred choice of doctors worldwide. At $799, the Capillus82 is the best value you can get for the amount of lasers (comb devices are priced at more than 4x as much per laser).

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Neal Roth
The Gift of Community
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
TEMPLE BET SHIRA BACKGROUND:
Growing up on Miami Beach, Neal Roth knew early on that ties to his faith would have an impact on the man he would become. Roth vividly remembers attending services and religious school at Beth Torah Congregation, so his initial foray into philanthropy after returning to Miami post- law school should come as no surprise to those who know him. “A good friend, who I had known since high school, knew of my feelings about my Jewish identity,” says Roth, co-founder of Gables-based law firm Grossman Roth Yaffa Cohen “He asked me to make a donation to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's annual campaign. I donated $500 even though I did not have the money back then. From that point forward I knew this was something I wanted to continue doing. “
18
THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
A NEW CONGREGATION:
In 1985, Roth became one of the founding members of Temple Bet Shira, a conservative temple in the heart of Pinecrest. The congregation was borne out of the need to serve the growing numbers of young conservative families moving south. The only problem? The property consisted of only a school building. “Being involved at the time, and knowing the importance of the capital campaign which was required to allow the synagogue complex to be built, we donated $350,000 to the capital campaign and the Bet Shira synagogue complex is named in memory of my mother, Letty Roth,” says Roth, who went on to become the temple’s President as well as the first Chair of Bet Shira's Endowment. Since then, Roth has led and contributed to endowment funds that emphasised everything from Jewish education to infrastructure needs of the synagogue. “The last endowment campaign commenced in 2013. We raised $2 million which was two times the amount our feasibility study suggested we could raise,” he says. “Endowments are critical to the survival of the synagogue. Currently, 150 families are participating in the third running campaign that ends this year.”
03.2017
CONTINUING A LEGACY
Roth says his dedication to the temple comes back to family--both the one he has at home and the one he has created within the community. “Having a place to both learn and teach adults and children was instilled in me at a young age, and I wanted to continue that tradition with my family,” he says. “Bet Shira is a true community in every sense of the word. We don’t just speak of ourselves as members—we speak of ourselves as family, where everyone is welcomed. We’re a very warm congregation and look to inspire those around us, especially in our immediate neighborhood.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Counting two children as graduates of the day school (it now houses up to Kindergarten) and three grandchildren who have been through the Early Childhood Education Center, Roth is proud of the past and looking positively into the future as he watches the next generation of leaders come up through the congregation. “There is a very nice group within the younger generation, who have become very active and share a lot of the ideals of the founding members,” he says. “I know the future will be secure in their hands.”
Bet Shira means ‘House of Song,’ and was named to reflect the upbeat and dynamic character of our membership. We all came together to form this congregation, and as a family, we made it happen, and we turned it into one of the strongest temples in South Florida.”

N A WORLD WHERE TECHNOLOGY IS AT OUR FINGERTIPS AND FINDING INFORmation at the local library is unheard of, students now, more than ever, are feeling the intense pressures that coincide with an increasingly educated and innovative society. TV shows enjoyed by students today such as “90210” and “Gossip Girl” deceptively depict the high school experience as a time of carefree bliss. Quite frankly, these shows are unrealistic. Recently, the line between excelling academically and enjoying what many adults fondly refer to as their “glory years” has become blurred. As a high school student taking five AP classes, an editor of the yearbook, and a cheerleader, I feel the pressure to excel in every activity. We all hope to be viewed as the epitome of a “well-rounded citizen” which, quite honestly, can become overwhelming. High school in many ways now is less of an experience and more of a four-year-long interview. Any adult can understand that interviewing for a job is nerve-wracking; imagine a student having this constant pressure to be perfect every day. According to the Child Mind Institute, “Over 17 million children in the U.S. under 18 have or have had a diagnosable psychiatric disorder, 32 percent of which are anxiety disorders. The median age at which a child is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder is 6 years old.” Students now are being taught from a young age that success is equivocal with quantitative values such as a 4.0 grade point average and a six figure salary. The end goal for many students is college, and among the top students at highly competitive schools like Palmetto, the Ivy League is the focal point. For this reason, these students tailor their schedules to impress their prospective schools and often choose classes that look better on their transcripts instead of classes that pique their interests. It seems as if they spend more time trying to get inside of the minds of an admissions officer and less time focusing on how to expand their knowledge bases. Additionally, students strive to be involved in as many extracurricular activities as possible. We all understand that within approximately five minutes, an admissions officer will make a decision that we have worked an entire four years towards. The uncertainty of whether our efforts will be rewarded is what keeps us going yet also holds us back. I personally understand the effects of late nights spent doing hours of studying when a 7:30pm basketball game goes into overtime the night before an AP Chemistry exam. To me and many others, this is a regular Tuesday night. According to a 2007 study in the Journal of Adolescent Health, “68.9 percent of teens get seven hours of sleep or less per night.” As a small fraction of this 68.9 percent, and a student who stays up late into the night studying advanced topics such as solubility equilibria, I can attest to the need for a break. It is difficult to find a balance between focusing on academics and spending time with my friends. As cheesy as it may sound, I truly love to learn. I am an extremely curious person, and to me, school is a place to feed that curiosity. I have also been known to be somewhat of a social butterfly. High school places an emphasis on preparing kids to compete at a collegiate level, but it is also a time for exploration and self-growth. Unfortunately, many students (including myself) tend to forget the latter. I wouldn’t change my high school experience for anything; it is where I first discovered my love of questioning everything placed in front of me. It has cultivated new understandings of the world around me and is the first step into my future. However, when exhaustion kicks in and the exams seem to be never ending, I find it hard not to wonder, is the prize worth the pressure? Sabrina Garcia is a student at Palmetto Senior High School.

HE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED CORAL PINE PARK TENNIS Center is now open. It was built to replace a more than 40 year old building that housed a smaller tennis center that serviced the six tennis courts at Coral Pine Park. The new tennis center is approximately 1500 square-feet, which includes the interior lobby, entrance tower, concession area, restrooms and an exterior colonnade. The design of the new building is based on the architectural elements at other Pinecrest park facilities. The interior of the building features a vaulted exposed wood beam ceiling, a two- story tower and a tennis ball logo engraved terrazzo floor. In addition to the tennis center, a new playground is being constructed that will include swings, shade canopies, a rubberized floor treatment and benches. The new playground will open mid-March. Come out to exercise, spend time with friends and family or to enjoy the park’s natural beauty. Don’t forget to take a photo or video and post it to your social media with #Pinecresting. MAYOR OF PALMETTO BAY

HERE IS PLENTY TO DO IN MARCH – THE SUNDAY Farmers Market continues at Coral Reef Park. Our annual village picnic is held in its annual slot of first Saturday in March as well as The Village of Parks continues to offer family-friendly entertainment. I encourage everyone to keep up with our listings on the official village website: palmettobay-fl.gov. Palmetto Bay is hosting an event for the 21 and over crowd on March 10 at Thalatta Estate – our Murder Mystery Dinner & Show – totally 80s. Detective skills and an appetite will be necessary for the Village's very popular event, held for its second year. Enjoy a delicious meal and an exciting evening of interaction with a professional cast to figure out the culprit in a lively "whodunnit" mystery. Murder-mystery dinners begin innocently enough - diners arrive to mingle amid drinks and quiet conversation. As diners much away, a sudden death interrupts the feasting, and a hapless detective arrives to accuse one of the audience members. A detective arrives to determine who the killer is, inevitably laying blame on one of the audience members. Tablemates work together to prove their innocence and find the real killer through an interactive performance full of hilarious characters and eye-catching costumes. Make sure you are dressed with the times! Grab your most righteous '80s concert gear to rock out in style while you solve a crime with your friends. Jean jackets and spandex leggings, big hair, bangles, leg warmers, and ripped jeans will be all the rage at this rocking night of mystery. Again, this is one of the few ages 21 & up only events. Tickets are $55.00 per person. For more information please visit www.palmettobay-fl.gov or call 305-259-1234. Speaking of the 80s – we go back even further the following night, March 11 – as we host our second annual Family Drive-in Movie Night. Join us in the Village Hall parking lot (9705 East Hibiscus Street) as we turn the future Downtown Development area into an amazing family-friendly drive-in theater experience. Equipped with a large inflatable movie screen and sound transmitted through your FM radio, this is going to be a movie night under the stars you won't want to miss! Cars, golf carts, bicycles and walk-ups are all welcome! The parking lot will open at 5:30 pm and the movie will begin at 7:00 pm. There will be no car entry allowed after 6:50 pm. There may be some sitting areas available right in front of the screen. We suggest you bring blankets and lawn chairs. Note that pre-registration is required and TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE & NON-TRANSFERABLE. For more information please visit palmettobay-fl.gov or call 305-259-1234. O NOW YOU’VE CLEANED YOUR CLOSETS like a pro… but what to do with all the, ahem, leftovers? Consign it, says Jennifer Kaloti, owner of Pinecrest’s The Recycled Closet. A longtime consignment shopper, Kaloti opened The Recycled Closet in 2008 and soon became a go-to source for South Florida fashionistas, earning accolades including AOL City’s Best, CBS 4 Miami Best Thrift Shop in South Florida 2010, and Miami New Times Best Thrift Shop 2013. “Consignment is a great way to make a little extra money without any hassles,” says Kaloti. Here are her tips for making the most of your closet. What are the best items to consign? We are a middle market store, so we take trend labels, everything from jeans, tops, jackets and formal gowns to handbags, shoes and jewelry. We like things from chain stores, department stores and boutiques. What is the criteria for a good consignment item? If you loved it at one time maybe someone will too! Just make sure it's freshly laundered or dry cleaned and free from stains and tears. We typically look at 20-50 items at a time. Just bring them neatly folded in a shopping bag. How does the consignment process work? Call or email us to make an appointment and we will look at your things on the spot and decide what we can sell. We enter everything in a database and if and when it sells you will receive 40 percent of the selling price. What items are you looking for right now? It's prom time! We are now accepting long gowns appropriate for high school girls, along with accessories such as shoes, evening bags and jewelry. We even have some men’s suits from J Crew, Zara and Calvin Klein... and will accept similar suits in perfect condition.

Ask the Expert: Organized by Aly
A
LY FINKELSTEIN HAS A PASSION FOR ORGANIZATION… BUT IT’S NOT EXACTLY what you think. The New Jersey-based organizational expert isn’t just driven by the visual satisfaction of de-cluttering, she’s onto something deeper, bringing her experience and eye for order to families near and far and allowing them to live with less, while creating more time for family, friends and, well, life. Taking inspiration from her “neat freak” Dad, Finkelstein has grown her business, Organized by Aly (organizedbyaly.com), to include clients from across the Northeast as well as in South Florida, helping them with everything from room transitions and home staging to executive office organization and wardrobe storage. She even offers clients moving support via “The Organized Move.” We spoke with Finkelstein to get her take on getting started, her favorite products and the one room we all seem to ignore. What’s the best way to start spring cleaning? Pick a designated spot. The closet is oftentimes too daunting for people, so pick one category: shoes or swimwear, for example. How do you decide what to keep, what to donate and what to toss? Once you’ve decided what you are going to focus on take all of those things out so you can see them. For example, remove every pair of shoes from the closet. Then clean the shelves. Once you have done that look at each pair and be very honest with yourself about what you will truly enjoy wearing again. If it's old, dirty or beat up give it away or throw it away! What’s your best advice for clients who have a hard time parting with their “stuff?” It’s often very hard to part with expensive or sentimental things, but if you are not going to wear or use the item again it is important to part with it. Space is limited (even in the largest of closets!) and making room for the things you love should be a main priority.
What are some of your “goto” products for organizing? The Container Store has a line of clear storage boxes called "our storage boxes." I am obsessed with how easy they stack, how clean they look and how inexpensive they are. I use them on every single one of my jobs! What’s the room most often neglected? The laundry room! It really should be home base for neatness and organization. I tell clients to start with a blank slate and try to keep only the essentials in the laundry room. What has been your most challenging job? The most challenging jobs are the ones where clients are reluctant to part with belongings but have a vision of a calm, serene space. Often, people have four-to-five times the amount of items in their home for the space they have. I never want anyone to feel like I am forcing them to part with their belongings, but I know that reduction is an essential component of organization.
MARCH 2017
What’s your best piece of advice for clients? Don’t overstock your home; it’s not a store. Keep the things you love and part with the rest. We live in a time where you can literally have anything you need within 24 hours... having 14 bottles of shampoo clog up your closet is unnecessary and very hard to keep neat. How did your company come about? I have always been a neat freak. My favorite activity is cleaning out my closet, basement and pantry. When my second child was 18 months old I had a strong itch to go back to work, but felt compelled to only leave my kids to do something I truly loved. When I realized being a professional organizer was a real thing I was amazed at my luck! I am so fortunate to spend my days doing something that does not feel like work to me!

OR DR. VICTORIA ROTHMAN, IT WASN’T ENOUGH TO SIMPLY RETURN to South Florida… she wanted to realize her decade-long dream in the city she called home. “My husband and I moved to Pinecrest and we established our roots here,” says Dr. Rothman, a mother of two. “We’ve immersed ourselves in the community.” The Miami Beach-native (and Ransom-Everglades alum) headed north to attend school—first the University of Pennsylvania, then Boston University School of Dental Medicine—but decided to return to South Florida in 2003 for her specialty orthodontic residency at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine. Since then, says Dr. Rothman, her dream has always been to create her own practice in the community she returned to — and chose to call home. This month Dr. Rothman sees her dream come to fruition with the opening of Pinecrest Orthodontics at 121st Street and South Dixie Highway. As the only practice in the Village focused exclusively on orthodontics, Dr. Rothman is looking to bring her 12 years of experience in other offices to Pinecrest as well as surrounding communities. “I feel I’ve gained so much knowledge over the past decade, working in other practices,” she says. “I’ve learned so much in every way — and not just from a clinical standpoint, but also how I want to run a small business and provide excellent customer service to my patients.” Dr. Rothman says spending her time in various offices has created a strong desire to form a warm and inviting environment for all members of the family. “I like to spend my time with patients, to cater to them a little bit more,” she says. “I would never want my patients to feel anything other than top priority.” And, make no mistake, Dr. Rothman says, those patients come in all ages. “I treat patients from children to teens to adults,” she says, noting that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first orthodontic checkup by age seven. “In fact, there’s been a big interest in adult orthodontics lately, especially when it comes to options such as cosmetic braces and Invisalign.” Dr. Rothman also has a special interest in patients with special needs, and hopes to continue some of the work she began with a craniofacial team in Broward. In the office, the doctor’s philosophy on patient treatment tends toward balance (“I embrace new technology but, on the other hand, I am conservative when I need to be,” she says.) with a focus on personalization. “I don’t push treatment on every
patient. I try to treat each patient as if he or she were my own family member,” says Dr. Rothman. “We start when the time is right.” Dr. Rothman is also dedicated not just to the right treatment, but also to the right materials. “One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that quality matters,” she says. “I always use the highest-quality materials, particularly when it comes to braces.” She offers a variety of orthodontic treatment options, depending on the patient’s needs. These include various orthodontic appliances, metal and clear braces, as well as Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. The office’s bilingual staff is already getting settled into their newly built office space and welcoming new patients from Pinecrest and neighboring communities, including Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay, South Miami, and Kendall. Dr. Rothman is also keen to explore opportunities to get involved with local schools and other community organizations. “I’m so thrilled to be working in such a special community,” she says. “This is where I live, where my children go to school, where I spend most of my time. To be able to create my own practice here is really a dream come true.” Pinecrest Orthodontics is located at 12197 S. Dixie Highway, Pinecrest, FL 33156 and is now accepting new patients. Please visit www.pinecrestortho.com or call (305) 423-4130 to schedule a complimentary initial consultation!

Valuable Instruments Collecting Dust in the Closet BY PENNY DANIELS

USIC FILLED THE AIR. THE LOUD SOUNDS, THE HIGH PITCHES AND THE beat of the drums got the attention of the audience. The orchestra began playing the overture introducing the Broadway play – The Beauty and the Beast. The play was about to begin. The stage was set, the actors were ready, and the musicians were in their places ready to make the story come alive through music. Tones from the flute, piano, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and drums, raised excitement for the opening act. Throughout the play, music of various octaves directed our emotions and anticipation of what would happen next. Can you imagine what this play would have been like without music?

MIKE’S GONE MAD! WE MUST CLEAR OUT ALL OLD INVENTORY! UP TO
As the play unfolded, we let our emotions play along with the sounds of music. It reminded me of a time when I played a musical instrument and performed in front of others. Boy, it seems like a lifetime ago when I learned invaluable lessons and fell in love with music. A long time ago, I learned how to read music, play the flute, play in a band and enjoyed working together with others to create musical entertainment. But…where is that old flute? Is it collecting dust in the closet? In the attic? Do I still even have it? Hmmm…it may be time to search for it and see if it still works? Is it valuable since it’s almost an antique? According to the 2009 U.S. Census data, about eight percent of Americans play musical instruments regularly. Are you part of that eight percent? If not…do you want to regularly play a musical instrument again? It’s never too late. Get that old instrument out of the closet. Dust it off. Or you may even consider trading it in towards a new instrument; you have several options, but the first step is taking it out of the closet. Instruments are valuable – both in the monetary and cultural senses. Musicians Discount Center can help you decide what is best for you and your old instrument. Maybe it’s relearning how to play the instrument. Maybe it’s trading it in for something new and different. Whatever your decision is, let us help you. Stop in today and see what is available…let music fill your life and let the fun begin! Getting started is simple: let the professionals at Musicians Discount Center in South Miami help you find the guitar that suits you and fits your budget, too. They are the one stop music shop that has been sharing their expertise with others for many years. They offer new and used instruments, instrument rentals, rent to own programs and music lessons. Stop in and let the sounds of music begin in your house today. Contact Musicians Discount Center at 305-255-9466 or visit them online at www.musiciansdiscountcenter.net.

Where do the Children Play? BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
W
E ARE BLESSED TO SHARE IN THE SALE OF MANY homes in our community and very much appreciate the support that we receive. In this experience, I have noticed the children’s bedroom sizes becomes a key component of the buyer’s decision to purchase a home. There is the “command and control center” approach where the rooms are large and have multiple screens in it. One for the TV(s), another for school work (laptop or tablet) and the ever-present cell phone to stay connected. In this room the kids enjoy total privacy and virtually live many emotions, successes and failures with little human physical communication. Dare I say this is also convenient for the parent that comes home exhausted from work and is just looking to relax with as little interaction as possible? TV dinners for all in their respective rooms. The children will learn life lessons, virtually. The cable provider in our homes appreciates the amount of internet that we use, right? Just look at what’s happening to that pricing.

There was a time just last century where the kids played stick ball, street hockey, hoops, tennis, and soccer. They fished, ran, played tag, piano, guitar… well, you get the picture. It goes on today just much more organized with club sports, choirs, bands and they take very well thought out planning. We see that with families that have multiple kids and activities. Our boys played soccer and our daughter sang in the choir. Rare was the weekend we could spend at home together. Never mind the cost. Today there are homes and apartments that offer bedrooms large enough to fit a nice bed and dresser and very little else. It’s common to hear some parents champion the cause of only having one or two televisions in the house and the computer(s) are in an area where anyone can use and see them. There may even be a piano and a reading area. What? This design is the result of the very expensive cost of construction in new homes and condos and maximizing the area where the family hangs out. The so called “great room” in an open plan layout that allows everyone to interact and have meals together. Oh, the benefits of family time are countless, even when we’re tired…don't you agree? We talk with each other and learn from totally different perspectives in a safe environment. Life lessons, live and in color. In Napoleon Hill’s book “Outwitting the Devil” he describes how drifting in our minds works in favor of the evil one, while people that think, fail and continue to develop critical thoughts will always forge forward to success and outwit the devil. Great read. In France, French law gives workers “The Right to Disconnect,” a rule that went into effect at the end of last year. Per NPR “The French government said at the time

B
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
EING COOL IS A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR TIM AND MICHELLE Alexander. As the owners of Miami-based Trinity AC, along with partner Gary Reeves, the Alexander’s are key to keeping South Florida homeowners happy during the long summer months. And they definitely know how. Both Tim and Gary were longtime employees of the company (Tim started as the company’s driver in 1990) before taking on ownership more than a decade ago. Today, Tim takes charge of the day-to-day operations (that means a 24/7 crew to handle calls and maintenance), Reeves oversees the construction and estimating division, and Michelle handles the company’s finances. And while the Trinity team is always ready to design, install, and service both residential and commercial air conditioning systems, there are some things homeowners can do to keep their own systems up and running throughout the year. Here are a few tips…straight from the experts.
CHECK YOUR FILTERS. Tim stresses the importance of buying properly sized air filters to keep AC systems working properly… even if it’s not as easy as it sounds. “It’s become more challenging in the last few years because so many manufacturers are shifting to non standard size air filters.”
KEEP CONDENSATE DRAIN LINES CLEAN. Tim advises pouring approximately four-to-eight ounces of bleach into it monthly, when changing the filters. “That’s assuming the installing contractor installed an access cap on it like we've made company policy for over 30 years.”
INVEST IN SEASONAL MAINTENANCE.
TIM ALEXANDER | PRESIDENT
“We recommend once before summer and once before winter just to confirm your system is performing optimally before that first heat wave or cold front moves through,” says Tim, who notes that Trinity offers what they call an energy maintenance agreement (EMA). “It gives the homeowner two maintenances, six months apart per year at a discounted price and a discount for service work if needed while a member.”

O, YOUR DOG IS LIMPING FROM ONE OF THE BACK LEGS. You may have noticed limping on and off for a few months. Or perhaps, you have observed a sudden holding of the leg from the ground, just for a couple of days. Your veterinarian diagnosed a stifle problem, and you have been told that your pet needs surgery. You are not alone. Stifle conditions are one of the most common orthopedic problems seen in dogs. The stifle is a complex joint found midways in the back leg of your dog. It involves three bones: the femur, the patella (kneecap) and the tibia. This joint is equivalent to the human knee. Even though the stifles can be affected by a large number of conditions, by far the most common ones are patellar luxations and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears. There are a number of treatment options for these conditions, which keep expanding with advances in Veterinary Medicine. Treatment recommendations are not cookie-cutter, and must be formulated based on the individual physical characteristics of the dog, the lifestyle of the dog, and the specific stifle pathology of the joint. Treatment recommendations are also dependent on the level of expertise and knowledge of the doctor performing the evaluation and recommendation. Stifle orthopedic problems are one of the veterinary conditions that will produce the most confusion among dog owners, regarding its treatment. Often, owners seek second opinions for treatment options. For all cat owners, know that cats can also suffer from ACL tears and patellar luxations, even though not as commonly as dogs. Following is a short description of these two most common orthopedic problems of the dog’s knee. The orthopedic conditions of the stifle and the possible treatment approaches are complex and very patient-specific. The important point to remember is that, if your dog shows persistent lameness in one of the back legs, do not ignore it. Get a proper diagnosis by a licensed veterinarian as soon as possible. Conservative treatment should be initiated first (rest, anti-inflammatories, professional physical therapy, custom made orthopedic devices, etc). If your dog is not improving, then surgery should be considered. Remember that the surgical repair of these conditions is not an emergency that needs to be dealt with within one or two weeks. Surgery is not without complications, and when planning on it, an experienced veterinary orthopedic specialist is required. If your dog has problems on both stifles, avoid surgical repair of both limbs on the same day. It is best to have surgery on one leg at a time, because recovery is faster when there is a healthy leg to assist with strength and balance. Professional physical therapy, when provided by a veterinarian with accreditation in this field (Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner, CCRP) will manage the stifle diseases without the need for surgical intervention, for certain patients. On the other hand, when surgery is required, it will maximize the level of recovery, and will shorten the recovery time. It is your responsibility to make the best medical decision for your canine best friend. Do not rush your decision for treatment. Always get second and third opinions, if you need to.

HAVE GOTTEN SEVERAL REQUESTS TO WRITE AN ARTICLE SLANTED TOWARDS men, so guys, here it is. Enjoy! Men are notorious for wanting to read about sex but not relationships. So – spoiler alert, despite the title of this article, read on only if you want to be enlightened to the path to a fulfilling relationship (in every way) * wink, wink * Dating and relationships are a hot topic at happy hours and what I hear most of the time is the amount of work involved with women and relationships. Men want swinging from the chandelier sex and women want intimacy. Well here is some inside information, guys, if you create intimacy you will get the sweaty, in-every-room-sex you crave. I know you’re thinking, “Intimacy is work,” but it’s not bad work and quite frankly, you will be surprised at the pay off for both of you. So how does a strapping, virile man acquire intimacy? It is a combination of vulnerability, time and honesty. It is hard enough being honest with yourself, let alone a woman, but there is a sense of freedom that comes when you are. Exposing one’s skeletons and being transparent leaves you totally exposed and vulnerable. There’s that “V” word, again, and I don’t mean a woman’s body part. Vulnerability is not a bad word; a scary word, maybe, but not a bad one. The cold hard fact is in order to have a healthy, strong, thriving relationship both parties have to allow themselves to feel and embrace vulnerability. More times than I can count I have heard men and women say his or her partner “never let me in.” How sad to be sharing a bed with someone you don’t really know. Having open and honest dialogue about your past and any skeletons hanging around is an act of courage. View it as exhibiting your strength, not as exposing your weaknesses. Bringing a difficult topic into the light takes away its power. As long as you allow it to lurk in the shadows, it has the power to control you and, consequently, your relationships. That being said, this is a swinging door, so if you expect your partner to accept you, you have to accept your partner. If you realize you can’t, then walk. Being an open book is not a bad thing. Be thankful when someone wants to open and read it. I’m not saying you should unload your entire history on the first date. One must have discernment concerning with whom and at what time is best. But at some point the book has to come off the shelf. “Timing is everything,” “All in good time,” and “When the time is right,” are popular sayings for a reason. They’re true. Guys, you want toe curling sex? Then trust me on this. Invest some time, slow things down. Don’t let sex be the main objective of your third date. When you do, you are setting yourself up to lose interest in what could be a fabulous woman because you are rushing things along. By speeding up the “get to know each other” phase, you have successfully eliminated the mystery and pleasure of getting to know her and BAM – you’ve lost interest. Here is a fact. As much as you think you know a person because you have spent hours texting (which, by the way, inspires my follow-up piece about the intimacy in hearing someone’s voice) there is no way you can really, really know someone after one date. All you will know is whether or not you want a second date. I was talking with a guy friend of mine about this article and he said something that I think brings the concept of intimacy versus sex to light. He said, “In baseball, you have to round all the bases to get to home plate. If you don’t touch first base, you are automatically called out and none of the other bases matter. It seems as though in relationships people want to get to home plate without rounding all the bases. Kissing is first base and you should be called out if you don’t touch this base on a daily basis…and with passion.” And so you have it, straight from the mouth of one of your own. My 50-something-year-old friend has unlocked the key to great sex. He confirmed what I have long known and what men need to know. Great, swinging from the chandelier sex doesn’t start from the waist down but from the waist up. Opening your heart, being vulnerable and allowing your partner to feel comfortable doing the same will allow you to really get to know the person you’re creating intimacy with which will unequivocally lead to rockin’ sex. And, oh yes, kiss and kiss some more. Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY OPTIMAL RESULTS: 2-3 SESSIONS PER WEEK “I abuse my feet. Most mornings I run on concrete sidewalks, and then I run around work in heels (very high heels). The day after running in the last Miami Half Marathon, my legs, feet and hips were seriously aching. I tried cryotherapy and the very next morning, I felt so good, I was able to run pain-free! In fact, as long as I had a weekly session, my plantar fasciitis was gone. But driving far away for cryo was getting old, so I brought cryotherapy down to Pinecrest... And now we can all enjoy the benefits close to home. When you try it, you’ll understand why it’s so popular among not only professional athletes but also with regular people with aches and pains, like me. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.”

We focus on “natural” in many of these tips because most over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are combined with other unnecessary medication. We tend to think that more is better so we go for the ones labeled “Max” or “Extra Strength” and those are the ones usually combined with medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). Too much acetaminophen can damage your liver. Every year over 80,000 people go to the emergency room due to overdose of acetaminophen and 25,000 get hospitalized. So, stay away from combination medications—you don’t need them.

»» Tip 1: Basic things first—consider the Flu vaccine and wash your hands frequently. »» Tip 2: Take a good blend of immune support herbs such as echinacea, goldenseal, astragalus, and andrographis, available in any health food store. The best one and my favorite is tropical sage, unfortunately it is not widely available. »» Tip 3: keep your nose clean moist. Use Xlear saline nasal spray with xylitol to wash away microbes right in the nasal passages and reduce bacterial adhesion! This one is a must. »» Tip 4: Probiotics, or “good bacteria”, help the immune system as well as the digestive system, so make sure you are taking those regularly. »» Tip 5: Drink ginger tea with lemon and honey. The best method is to simmer ginger slices to bring out the antibiotic effect. Add lemon and honey, each add to the cold and flu-prevention effect and makes it taste delicious. »» Tip 6: Garlic is also a strong antimicrobial and can be minced and sautéed to enhance a variety of meals. OST PEOPLE I TALK WITH about traveling turn their noses up when I mention the Midwest and I have a confession to make, I was one of those people too. And then one day, I got a call to do a story in the Midwest and my impression did a 180 degree turn. The states comprising the Midwest are Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South and North Dakota. Each one of them is unique in its own way but the people have one common factor; they are down to earth and friendly. The Heartland is definitely worth your attention when you are making your summer plans. There is an abundance of places to explore for adults and families alike but, unfortunately, I won't have the space in this article to list them all so here are a few of my favorites. For all of you that are roller coaster junkies, Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio needs to be on your list. It is home to the largest collection of roller coasters and rides in the world. Keeping with the theme park interest, Wisconsin Dells offers water parks ad nauseam. Each park has its own theme and tries to outdo the others. If walking the parks isn’t enough exercise for you, the Dells has nature trails along the Wisconsin River for some quiet hiking. Michigan has two of my favorites, Mackinac Island and Frankenmuth. Mackinac Island is a step back in time to the Victorian era complete with horse drawn carriages as the mode of transportation. Frankenmuth is a quaint Bavarian village with a year round Christmas shop that is spectacular. If canoeing is your thing, then head to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. The labyrinth of lakes makes up 1,200 miles of canoe only routes. For that family wilderness getaway, this is the place to check out. In a previous article, I wrote about the Wizard of Oz park that opens only once a year in NC, so it is only fitting for me to mention that there is The Oz Museum in Kansas. It is the home to everything Oz and with more than 2,000 artifacts surrounding you, you no doubt will start to feel like Dorothy herself. South Dakota has Mount Rushmore and the Mammoth Site. After taking in the surrealness of Mount Rushmore, you can get up close and personal to a mammoth excavation site. Another favorite of mine is Door County in Wisconsin. It’s expansive shoreline and lighthouses are captivating as well as the quaint towns and of course, their fabulous fish boils. Take the ferry over to Washington Island and bike its many paths or walk the quiet beaches. Not to be out done by Door County, I have to say the ultimate adventure would be to experience an 8-day cruise on a riverboat. Can someone say, Mark Twain? With so much to see and do in America's Heartland, I suggest you get a packin’! Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for The Florida Villager. She can be reached at debbiemartinez1@mac.com.

H, TO BE YOUNG AGAIN! THE QUICK REBOUND AFTER a night out, being able to go out night after night with no repercussions – the dream. While regaining a youthful appearance is something I specialize in as a plastic surgeon, I also recognize that people want to be able to enjoy their new body. While I will never say no to an invite out on the town, I know that I need to prepare properly and recover properly if I want to feel like myself again quickly. IV infusions with my own special “cocktails” work wonderfully to accomplish just that. In fact, many establishments all over the nation have recently sprung up offering just IV infusions. They will provide a menu of different blends each touting unique benefits. In general, they will all provide substantial increases in hydration as well as a welcome pick-me-up. Infusions can be targeted towards general wellbeing, immune defense, or even weight loss, depending on exactly what concoction you desire. After an IV infusion, you should expect to feel refreshed and even better than you did before your big night out. Although they are most commonly known as the “hangover cure” for young and spry twentysomethings, mature professionals can benefit just as much after a particularly exhausting work week or if they feel a sickness coming on and want to avoid it.

Where do the Children Play? (cont.) that an intervention was necessary, for the health and well-being of their workers.” Is now the right time to bring change to the behaviors in our own community? Here is a concise real estate market update. Yes, we do have a spring market albeit in summer like weather. There is a noticeable pickup in sales during the months of March through August. Single family homes (SFH) in our area that are priced at fair-market value and under one-million dollars are selling within 90 days. The current inventory is at 3-4 months. If you’re thinking of selling your home and it fits in this category, your timing is great. Buyers must be very active and pounce on the homes that come on the market and fit your criteria. SFH in the same area that are priced over one-million dollars at fair market value can take a year or more to sell. The current inventory is at 22+ months. If you’re thinking of selling your home in this category, be aggressive in your pricing. If you’re looking to buy, this is a great market for you. The Condo market value is depreciating because of the oversupply of product in Miami-Dade. For the next year or so there will be new construction coming into the market, so pick the one that best fits your lifestyle. There is plenty to choose from. As the name implies, the benefits are administered intravenously. Moreover, the ingredients in these cocktails can be relatively potent. Ingredients include corticosteroids, amino acids which affect metabolism, as well as factors that can affect blood alkalinity. They are almost always well-tolerated and legitimately produce positive effects in the body, but only a medical professional should deliver them. Because of this, I generally advise patients to seek IV infusions once a week, max – even once a month if steroidal ingredients are infused. Too much of a good thing will always lead to trouble, and trained medical staff can help to avoid this or spot when someone undergoing IV infusions has reached that point. Even just applying an IV requires a certain technique. It’s not uncommon to hear complaints of a friend leaving the hospital of the nurse who “kept stabbing me and couldn’t find the vein!” If it’s hard for them, then you had better not leave it to Joe Blow in the IV wagon. If you’re looking for the next medical trend, you’ve found it. IV infusions can produce rapid changes in the body for recovery or prevention of sickness. They work – but trust your body to those trained to care for it. So, what’s the harm in partying hard, especially if you don’t have to deal with the hangover the next. Get out there. Live a little! An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas.
