FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF MIDDLE-AGED AND elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.

with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS?

Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.

HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK?

IS IT SAFE?

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?

HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION?

The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller,

A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

GULLIVER PRINCIPAL RECEIVES CHAMBER AWARD

M-DCPS ON THE “SMART LIST”

Beaker & Gray co-owners Brian Nasajon and Ben Potts are upping the ante with Instant Karma; each month, the hip eatery will join forces with a local non-profit organization and donate a percentage of their Happy Hour proceeds to benefit the cause. The restaurant’s Instant Karma promotion will occur the fourth week of every month. From that Monday through Thursday, a percentage of Happy Hour sales will benefit a different local non-profit/charity organization. March's Beaker & Gray’s charity partner was The Children’s Bereavement Center, whose mission is to help children, young adults, and their families adjust to life after the loss of a loved one within a supportive community of their peers, and to promote healthful grief, healing and growth.

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

2017 Ask the Expert: Samantha Durso Summer Camp Listings BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

C

HOOSING A SUMMER CAMP CAN BE TRICKY. BALANCING YOUR CHILD’S interests with safety, friends and geography can make for a tough choice whether it be a specialized program, day camp or sleepaway option. We sat down with Samantha Durso, a camp advisor with Camp Experts & Teen Summers, a free and personalized summer camp and teen program advisory service, to get the lowdown on matching the kid with the camp.

WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A SUMMER PROGRAM? With so many factors involved it can certainly be an overwhelming process. Making the right choice is so important and many parents end up either sending their child to the camp they went to (and why not, it was the best camp ever!) or to a camp where their friends are going. The biggest factor to think about is, "Is it the right fit for my child?" Things to consider: 1. What is the programming structure and philosophy of the camp? 2. What measures does the camp take to ensure the safety of campers? 3. What is the geographic diversity like? A child from South Florida might feel more comfortable at a camp where they are not the only one from Florida.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS READY TO GO TO A SLEEPAWAY CAMP OR TRAVEL PROGRAM? Finding out the right time to attend sleepaway camp can be tricky. Don't judge entirely on the basis of age. Take cues directly from your child and be sure not to project your own fears on them. Too often, the child is ready but the parent is not. Projecting fear onto your child only cripples their future independence. Some questions to ask yourself: Are they showing interest in going to camp? Have they successfully spent the night away from home? Are they comfortable telling adults about their needs? Are they able to take care of their own hygiene? i.e. Shower?

WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE QUESTION TO ASK OF A CAMP WHEN YOU'RE COMPARING VARIOUS OPTIONS? What is the camp's philosophy? The camp director will set the tone. It starts from the top down. The philosophy of the director will be the direction of the staff. What is the philosophy on competition, sportsmanship, rules, bunk relationships, etc.? Make sure this matches your parenting style and your child's personality.

WHAT'S NEW ON THE CAMP SCENE THAT WASN'T AROUND (OR POPULAR?) 10 YEARS AGO? Ropes courses, zip lines and rock climbing walls are now very common. Your little ninja warrior in training will have a blast. Waterfront activities have also evolved from just waterskiing and canoeing. You can now find windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, even some that have lake front "water amusement parks" with slides & trampolines. Exercise rooms with spinning bikes can also be found in some camps. But more importantly, there is a return to the basics. Just about every camp should be unplugged.

CAMP: ALEXANDER CAMP WEBSITE: alexandermontessori.com HOURS: 9 am to 3:30 pm AGE RANGE: 18 months to 12 years With four locations, these camps are designed to be age-appropriate, allowing themselves to be directed by the energy and interests of the campers. Elementary-age campers can choose between an all-around camp with a variety of activities or a sports track with an assortment of sports in the mornings and a focus on instruction in two sports (choices are soccer, basketball, flag football) in the afternoons. CAMP: BIZNOVATOR CAMP WEBSITE: biznovator.com/camps AGE RANGE: 8-12 (June 4-9); 13-15 (June 12-16); 16-20 (June 18-July 1 & July 9-22) The BizNovator Camp offers hands-on learning, experiences that focus on the creation, evaluation, development, and launch of new businesses or social ventures. Whether it’s a solo-preneur or partnerships, participants are taught and guided through the startup fundamentals of new venture creation. ARROLLTON EDUCATES IN THE SACRED HEART tradition attending to the physical, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing of the whole child and preparing her to live fully and wisely. For more than 200 years worldwide, and over half a century in Miami, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart has taken its place as the only all-girls school grades preK-12 in the State of Florida, bringing the benefits of a girls-only environment to young women who choose the school for both the school year and summer enrichment. In fact, the school’s summer options give those who choose a co-ed education during the year the opportunity to reap the benefits of a single sex school while taking advantage of everything from sports to the arts to STEAM-based learning. “Our summer program echoes our school mission,” says Denise Del Valle, the school’s Director of Afterschool and Summer Programs. “We’re raising girls to be confident, to have strong convictions and courage.” “We run an all-girls’ school,” says Del Valle. “We see firsthand the benefits of single sex education, especially when it comes to science and engineering. Girls in an all-female environment take a lead in what they’re learning.” And science backs that up. A UCLA research study found that ten percent more girls' school graduates rate their confidence in math and computer abilities high at the start of college. “Coding is going to become a big part of these students’ future,” explains Del Valle. “We want our girls to have solid experience and confidence in this area. From an early age our girls use coding software to tell and create stories and play music before moving over to more sophisticated project such as building apps. Some of our summer programs place a focus on writing code and design… which will be the way of the future.” Imagine-DesignCode-Illustrate-Animate (just one of the all-day sessions) offers 4th through 7th graders the opportunity to do everything from designing and printing a 3D art piece to working in JavaScript. For those who want to get even more hands-on, the Maker Camp “empowers young women to explore and work with previous technologies and designs in the pursuit of understanding how and why the products were developed.” “It’s all about

20

inventing,” says Del Valle. “What’s available and what can I make? It’s about using tech and different things around us to create solutions for problems.” More traditional camps are also on the menu, including sports, drama, debate and academics. They also offer a “Fairytales from Around the World” option that places focus on Sacred Heart’s worldwide presence and the importance of learning about other cultures via legends, traditions and tales. “We invite girls from all faiths and ethnicities to participate” explains Del Valle. “Sacred Heart is about embracing all cultures and faith traditions. Our campers come from South America, Europe and other parts of the world.” Another reason Carrollton draws a diverse summer crowd is the dedication to a personal experience via

hands-on staff and administration and small groups of girls. “It’s about creating new friendships and memories,” says Del Valle. “There’s a lot of camaraderie and bonding.” For more information on Carrollton’s all-girls summer programs visit carrollton.org.

WE HAVE A CAMP FOR THAT

If you are tired of hearing, “I’m bored” then make Miami-Dade Parks a part of your child’s summer plans. With the assortment of activities from arts to sports to sleep away, parents can make this summer and unforgettable one. An easy way to make sure your child has a rich, fulfilling and memorable summer break is to plan ahead. Sitting down with your child and asking them what interests them or what they would like to try for the first time gets them involved in the planning process and helps point you towards a program that satisfies their curiosity. Does your child need to blow off some extra energy, or do they prefer to step onto the stage? Whatever their tastes it’s important to have the conversation now rather than later. While there is no question the school year is jam-packed with homework, afterschool activities and deadlines, it’s important to use the time off from school to not only take a break from assignments, but to give the time off purpose. Putting your child into a fun, educational or creative program will help develop healthy emotional and social skills that will help them grow into strong, considerate and competent adults. Learn how a Miami-Dade Parks Summer Camp program can give your child a summer they won’t ever forget! For more information, visit miamidade.gov/summercamps or call 786.315.5410.

THE SIMPLE GUIDE TO A PAIN-FREE LIFE

FORGET PAINKILLERS AND SHOTS, SALVATION FROM CHRONIC PAIN CAN BE FOUND INSIDE A PILATES STUDIO.

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

OR MANY SOUTH FLORIDIANS (AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL) CHRONIC PAIN usually starts slowly. A twinge in the shoulder or a slight ache in the knee that eventually becomes more and more invasive until it affects their everyday life. It begins to permeate the day and stops once-active people from enjoying regular activity. “You don’t have to live with that pain and you don’t have to go to therapy for 25 -plus visits,” says Christa Gurka, owner of Pilates in the Grove, a South Miami and Coconut Grove Pilates studio with a heavy focus on Physical Therapy services. Gurka, an orthopedic Physical Therapist, faced her own pain after a sports injury in college before finding salvation in Pilates-based outpatient therapy during her post-collegiate work. Since then, she has sought to bring the same freedom to clients throughout South Florida. “Our studio is very different,” says Gurka, who opened her first studio on Miami Beach in 2006. “We’re all about bringing health and wellness to the general population. It’s a very comfortable, very positive environment.” And it’s an environment that is miles from the traditional model of doctor visits, insurance fights, painkillers and even injections. “Many therapists focus on just treating and alleviating the pain,” says Gurka who oversees a staff of highly educated and highly-accredited physical therapists (many boasting doctoral degrees) and more than 60 years of combined experience. “We want to look at not only the pain but also where the pain is coming from and we want to fix it. Pain only tells you that there’s a problem, not what the real problem is.” And the proof is all around. “"Christa was the first person to accurately diagnose an issue with my hips that had troubled me for years,” says Lauren Amron. “After helping me out of an acute pain situation, she helped me cultivate an awareness of my condition and taught me a strategy for preventing future flare ups.” That personalized attention is just one benefit of the Pilates in the Grove method. Here are three more…

You can avoid medication. Contrary to popular belief, Florida is a Direct Access state, meaning that residents can see a physical therapist for 30 consecutive days without a physician referral, a benefit that Gurka says can be life-changing for those struggling with pain. “It can take 30 days just to get a doctor’s appointment,” she says. “A PT can see you right away.” Additionally, Gurka says most physicians will send patients out for lengthy, expensive and invasive tests that will result in additional time and money. Most patients eventually are sent home with painkillers or even injections. “Opioids are just a band-aid for the problem,” she says. “A good PT can tell where the issue really is and create a plan to fix it.”

You can skip the insurance hassle. Because Pilates in the Grove chooses not to participate with insurance plans they don’t have to spend time arguing over claims, making them what Gurka and her staff call a “patient-centered facility.” “We work for the patient, not the insurance company,” she says, explaining that clients can submit claims to their insurance directly for reimbursement if they wish. And unlike insurance-based PT clinics, clients at Pilates in the Grove get a full hour with a therapist. “Our approach saves clients both time and money…most people have a $45 or more co-pay each time they visit a traditional therapist and generally only spend 10-15 minutes with their therapist at each visit. If they attend therapy 3 times a week that is over $130 weekly,” says Gurka. “We spend an entire hour dedicated to each client building a personalized program that includes manual therapy and corrective exercises. Because of our patient centered approach we can usually treat people in four-to-six visits and then discharge them to a personalized home program.”

You get a full body education. Just because pain appears in one place, that doesn’t mean it’s where it originates, explains Gurka. “We’re doing a full screening on anyone who comes in,” she says.

24

THE FLORIDA VILLAGER

04.2017

“Based on what we see we develop a program and educate the patient on why they’re having pain and how they can improve their structure and function to relieve their symptoms.” Calling patients “active participants in their recovery,” Gurka and her team work with each individual to assess what they’re doing to exacerbate the pain and how minor lifestyle changes (everything from how they drive to how they sleep) can help with recovery. “In my long life, I have had accidents, fractures, pains. For those I have been to physical therapists galore,” says patient Diane Grob. “Working with Christa and her team on my neck and spine has made all the difference in the world. For the first time I can remember, I feel like my whole body is moving in rotation. She has given me wonderful exercises to do at home and they, along with my sessions and Pilates, make me feel more flexible, and therefore younger than ever.” Adds Gurka “We look at people as a whole.” More than curing pain, Gurka and her team stress that their motivation is to get people back to enjoying life… whether that means returning to a sport or simply lifting their children or grandchildren. “People live with the pain until it inhibits their daily life.,” says Gurka. “We always ask: ‘What is pain keeping you from doing?’ We want to give you back the pain free life you deserve.” For more information on Christa Gurka, MSPT, PMA®-CPT and her team at Pilates in the Grove visit www.pilatesinthegrove.com

Middle School Survival Tips BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

BY RACHEL A. DOPICO

Fashion Art & Music Night FIRST SATURDAYS, 6 PM – 9 PM Live music, art and entertainment fill the shopping, dining and business district of Coconut Grove, Miami. Neighborhood galleries, boutiques and restaurants offer special promotions, extended business hours and host to artists, designers, musicians, authors and more!

OING FROM BEING AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT TO BEING IN middle school can seem scary, but in reality there is almost no difference at all. The only major differences are a bell schedule, multiple teachers, and a new campus. Here are some tips for surviving your three years in middle school: »» See if any of your elementary school friends are going to your school so you can start off the year with a friendly face. This will help you get used to your new environment, and this way you can have someone to sit with at lunch. »» Make sure you know your schedule. If you have it printed out and memorize it, you’ll always know which classes or lunch period you have. A friend of mine went to the wrong lunch and ended up being a half hour late to her class! »» Get to know your way around

school as quickly as possible. Knowing where your classes are, especially if you are at a large school, can be a big help, especially since you only have a few minutes to get to them. »» Try to branch out and make

friends in all of your classes. This will be a big help if you miss class and need homework, and class will definitely be more fun with a friend. »» Learn to be organized, so that you never forget homework, can have good notes to study, and can ace binder checks. »» Get to know your teachers. If you are comfortable with them, and know what kind of work they expect, you’ll be able to always do your assignments correctly. »» Beware of group projects. There are two types of people you could get in your group: people who will work, or slackers. Make sure that if you get an unmotivated member, you don’t let yourself do all the work. »» Don’t procrastinate. Even though it may seem easier, the work will catch up to you later. »» It’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared for a test. It depends on the teacher, but in most cases, tests are a pretty big deal, and you’ll want to know you studied as much as you could before you take a test. »» Be careful not to get swept up in popularity contests. In middle school, there are many social cliques, and if you let it get to your head, you’ll be just like any other kid who only wants to be popular and doesn’t care about anything else. As long as you are happy, that’s what’s important. »» Don’t submit to peer pressure. It’s important to make friends, but you should draw the line if anyone is trying to force you into anything, such as skipping school. »» Follow the school dress code and rules. You can express yourself by wearing necklaces, shoes or different hairstyles while staying within the dress code. You should also follow rules and behave so that you don’t get a referral, since those go on your student record. In conclusion, it is important to be studious, pay attention in class, and behave in school, but you should also be sure to leave time for yourself to make sure you have the best experience in middle school.

10 Ways to Green Your Home BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

A

s the saying goes—it’s not easy being green. Well, not all the time. But it can be easier than you think. These days green products dominate store shelves everywhere from Fresh Market to Target and cities and counties offer homeowners multiple incentives for adding eco-friendly options to their homes. Here are 10 ways to get green today.

01

Look into Ygrene.

02

Check your lightbulbs.

03 04 28

Working with more than 320 communities nationwide (including Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay), the Ygrene program enables property owners to make energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate resiliency and water saving improvements to residential, multifamily, commercial and agricultural buildings with 100 percent, no money down PACE financing. Payments are incorporated into, and repaid over time through, property taxes with terms of up to 30 years, depending on service area and type of improvement. To check eligibility simply visit the ygrene website at ygreneworks.com.

One of the easiest swaps to make are in your home’s light bulbs. In fact, the EPA’s Energy Star says that if every home replaced just one incandescent bulb with an energy-saving bulb we would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. Energy Star certified bulbs are easily found at most home improvement store and use about 70-90 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. In addition, they produce about 70 percent less heat, making them safer to operate.

Go meatless on Monday. The Meatless Monday movement was founded more than a decade ago and is now active in more than 44 countries. The theory behind it is that going meatless just once a week can not only reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, but also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water. Visit meatlessmonday.com for more information and recipes.

05

Conserve water.

06

Shade your fridge.

07

BYOB

08

Do double duty.

09

Be cool… the smart way.

10

Recycle.

Take your shoes off. Many people already abide by this simple tip, thinking of it as the equivalent of washing their hands. Aside from the simple idea of not tracking bacteria into your home, removing shoes can help avoid toxins such as herbicides and lead dust from entering. Want some numbers? A study by the University of Arizona collected 421,000 units of bacteria on the outside of the shoe, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Serratia ficaria.

In addition to swapping in water-saving showerheads and low-flow faucet aerators (available for some through the city of Pembroke Pines), there are simple ways to ease your water usage: check faucets and pipes for leaks; insulate your water pipes; take shorter showers; turn off the water while you brush your teeth; plant drought-resistant shrubs and plants; and water your lawn early in the day.

Did you know that keeping your refrigerator in the shade could help it keep cool easier? You can also save energy by avoiding the fridge-graze, peeking inside the fridge can cost more than you think when it comes to your energy bills. It goes without saying that appliances should meet Energy Star standards but you can save energy on the dishwashing side by always running a full load and air-drying dishes at the end of the cycle.

Bring your own bags. Most stores (including Publix and Whole Foods) offer reusable bags to customers, as traditional paper and plastic have been shown to take a big toll on our natural resources. In the same vein, look for ways to eliminate waste even when packing lunches- there are loads of affordable options in BPA-free plastic as well as the ever-popular Bento boxes for kids and adults alike.

Look around; almost everything in your home can be put to good use. Ideas? Try rinsing large plastic containers of sour cream or yogurt after use for storage and travel snacks; toss used coffee grounds over flower beds of acid-craving plants; or place foam packing peanuts in the base of potted plants to help with drainage.

It’s hot in South Florida, but we can still go green when it comes to being cool. Change your air filters regularly to avoid issues and, if possible, switch to a programmable thermostat to help keep energy costs down. Also- make sure equipment is serviced and up to date and set back the thermostat five-to-eight degrees when not at home.

The old faithful of greening, recycling keeps landfills from overflowing, reduces air pollution and conserves the energy it would take to make a new product.

Pet Cloning: Here to Stay? after the company receives the adult skin cell biopsy, the eight-week old clone pet is delivered to the client. It does sound simple. However, pet cloning is extremely controversial raising debate regarding the morality and ethics of the procedure. Those in favor argue that cloning does not contribute to the dog and cat overpopulation; it facilitates important scientific knowledge to researchers, strengthens the humananimal bond, and does not involve inhumane treatment of animals. Those against the procedure contend that this industry sells a false expectation that the cloned pet will be a complete identical twin of the original pet. They argue that the cloning procedure causes pain and distress on the animals involved, and have extremely high failure and mortality rates. The Humane Society condemns pet cloning due to an already existing overpopulation of animals and the potential for animal suffering. Pet cloning even though commercially available, is still an experimental technology. Many clones are produced that are born in poor health, born with defects, or stillborn. About 12 surrogate mothers need to be impregnated to ensure a successful clone. At rare times when more than one healthy clone is produced, and the client request is for only one clone, what is supposed to be done with the rest? Before considering cloning of a beloved pet, proceed with caution and consider instead saving a life by adopting an abandoned shelter animal. The world for that pet will change forever. E ALL LOVE OUR PETS AND CONSIDER THEM PART of the family. But, would you be willing to custom order a duplicate of your dog or cat as the end of his or her life approaches? Or, would you adopt a totally different pet instead? Well, it has been a while since the first cloned mammal, Dolly The Sheep, was successfully produced from an adult skin cell in 1996. In the past 20 years the cloning technique has been further developed, and nowadays we have cloned sheep, pigs, goats, cows, ferrets, dogs, cats and horses, among other animals. In fact, cloning is well accepted in some fields, such as the livestock arena. A cloned animal is a genetic duplicate of the original animal that is born at a later time. Although the cloned animal is genetically identical to the original, the temperament is not exactly the same. This is because it is partially determined by genes, In the U.S. pet cloning, even though controversial, is legal. The first pet cloned successfully was a cat, in 2004 in Texas. Since then many dogs and cats have been cloned. Even though pet cloning represents a small market, there is consistent demand for the procedure. Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, a cloning company based in South Korea, pioneered the pet cloning technique, and has already cloned more than 700 dogs successfully (sooam.com). The company has cloned highly trained search-rescue dogs and police dogs for South Korea, as well as highly priced pets for U.S. clients. The average price for a cloned pet is from $100,000 to $150,000. Closer to home ViaGen, a Texas based company, delivered the first U.S. born foal in 2010, and its first cloned puppy in 2016 (ViaGenpets.com). The price for a cloned pet by this company ranges from $25,000 to $50,000 per clone. In addition, they offer a genetic preservation program that allows preservation of adult cells from the original animal with the goal of producing a clone in the future. This company also caters to clients in the UK, where animal cloning is against the law. The sport of polo is the most open equine discipline for animal cloning. Highly priced polo horses are been cloned in large numbers by an Argentina-based company (cretsviewgenetics.com.ar). The company is the world’s leader in equine cloning, having produced so far around 200 cloned foals priced from $80,000 to $200,000 each. But, what does the cloning process involve? First, the cloning company will ship a tissue biopsy kit to the client. A veterinarian will be requested to obtain a skin biopsy the size of a dime from the original pet. This can be obtained under sedation or up to 12 days post mortem if the pet has already passed away. About six months

Eat Your Water and Sunscreen BY HOWARD MURAD, M.D., F.A.A.D.

A

GING CAN’T BE PREVENTED, BUT IT CAN BE SLOWED. THE BEST WAY TO STAVE OFF aging is through the use of sun protection, but not just through lotions and sprays. We can eat our way to healthier, stronger and younger skin if we simply eat our water and sunscreen. I know that sounds funny, but if we feed the body powerful nutrients, in the form of juicy fruits and vegetables, skin can be repaired, protected and fortified to slow the aging process, at the cellular level. Juicy foods offer cells the much-needed hydration they require for basic everyday functioning as well as vital nutrients needed for repair and fortification. In other words, it is far more hydrating to eat a piece of fruit than drink water, and certain nutrients in fruits and vegetables pack a punch when it comes to fighting sun damage, as they work to boost your SPF, systemically. In sunny South Florida, almost one in four people will get skin cancer. Knowing this, Miami residents should eat low acid, more alkaline or anti-inflammatory foods such as those stocked with polyphenols, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which offer the highest amount of skin protection. This includes most fruits, vegetables and edible plants such as cucumber, citrus, berries, broccoli, avocado and even red wine.

properties, isothiocyanates, which contain sulforaphane, stop cancer from spreading and induce cancer cell death as they work inside the cell to boost enzymatic activity that prevents oxidation. Sulfur is found in every living cell in the body and it plays a key role in collagen synthesis.

Avocado: Avocados, 70 percent to 80 percent water, are moderately alkaline. The fats in avocado are known to reduce cholesterol levels and are also cytoprotective. The oils in avocado improve the absorption of antioxidants. The carotenoids and phytosterols in avocado provide anti-inflammatory benefits.

Cucumber: One of the most alkaline vegetables. Cucumbers contain silica, a trace mineral that contributes to the strength of connective tissue, which prevents skin sagging, and fights cellulite. Cucumber skin is a good source of vitamins A, C and folic acid. Eating a three-ounce cucumber is almost like drinking three ounces of water because the water content in a cucumber is about 96 percent.

Citrus: Lemons and limes are the most alkalineforming citrus fruits. All citrus contain high levels of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, folate and potassium. Most citrus fruits are about 87 percent water. Vitamin C removes free radicals from the cell structures composed primarily of water and from areas containing body fluids. Folate reduces the risk of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Potassium helps move nutrients into cells.

Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, cherries, and pomegranates (about 80 to 92 percent water content) contain high levels of polyphenols and offer positive and preventive effects on cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke and inflammation. Most berries are moderately acidic, but contain strong anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids, a kind of polyphenol found in berries, help regulate nitric oxide, a free radical that regulates blood flow, and protects against blood clots and oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Systemically, flavonoids have shown to lower blood pressure. The strongest polyphenol is ellagic acid, with high levels found in raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates.

Red wine: Resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine, has been linked to a lowered risk of heart disease and is a sirtuin (anti-aging) stimulator. Early studies show that red wine’s properties may help prevent cancer in both chemically and UVB-induced skin cancer. Howard Murad, M.D., F.A.A.D., is recognized as a leading visionary for his scientific innovations, total body approach to youth building and overall wellness. His mission and passion is to help people unlock their potential to look younger, to feel younger and to live healthier, happier and more rewarding lives.

Broccoli: Broccoli, 91 percent water, is full of isothiocyanates, sulfur-containing phytochemicals, and is highly alkaline. Known for their anti-carcinogenic

Juan Enjamio

The Next Generation BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

FIU FIRST GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

Having emigrated from Cuba at the age of 10, Juan Enjamio knows firsthand what it means to be a first-generation college graduate. Enjamio went on to graduate from the University Miami School of Law and now acts as Managing Partner at Hunton & Williams’ Miami office, but he has never forgotten the importance his own parents placed on higher education and the support he received from early mentors. To that end it was a natural fit for Enjamio to lead his firm to the First Generation Scholarship Program, an initiative created FIU College of Law Dean Alex Acosta . “I was fortunate to have been mentored early in my career by great lawyers who instilled in me the understanding that a law license included the responsibility to use our talents and opportunities to help others,” says Enjamio. “I have been blessed with opportunities that others, who are very talented, have not experienced. I feel an obligation to help them.”

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP:

The scholarship acts as financial aid for first-generation students, regardless of race or social background, with firms donating half or full tuition for a single student and FIU matching. The program has raised more than $400,000 and brought more than 20 firms on board since its inception. “For a few years I have contributed personally to the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarship, a scholarship at the University of Florida that helps first generation college students,” says Enjamio. “Through the scholarship, hundreds of very talented young people, who would otherwise not have been able to go to college, have fulfilled their dreams of a college education. When I learned that Dean Acosta had instituted a similar program at the FIU Law School, I made sure our firm became an early sponsor.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY

Enjamio says the scholarship benefits not just the students, but the South Florida community; helping to foster a diverse legal community and keeping local talent within our borders. “[These scholarships] improve our community and our profession,” says Enjamio. “These students are likely to remain in South Florida. They enrich our community with the diversity of their talents. We are a poorer community if we don’t help foster the talents of these young people.” Of course, Enjamio admits, there is also the added benefit of seeing such students realize their own talents and potential. “I remember speaking with sons and daughters of immigrants who never thought attending college (much less law school) was feasible. Today they are professionals. Their gratitude is immense.”

LOOKING AHEAD

As the scholarship continues to grow ( funded by international and local law firms, long-time FIU Law supporters, faculty, and alumni), Enjamio say he hopes other colleges take note. “I hope that other institutions follow this example, and that many other individuals and firms contribute to these programs,” he says. “It is to our community’s collective benefit.”

There are many talented young people in our community who just need help to allow them to flourish, both financial help and mentoring.”

IV Infusions – The Latest Way to Beat Sickness Quickly BY JOSE M. SOLER-BAILLO M.D., M.S, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON, SOUTH MIAMI

W

E SEE THE NOTICES IN THE PHARMACY EVERY YEAR – It’s time for your flu shot! Most of us would continue on our way and pay the advice no mind. Unfortunately, when the flu or the most recent stomach bug going around does hit, we can hardly get out of bed, much less make it to work or school. These common illnesses can even sometimes be serious enough to land someone in the hospital. In this instance, one would usually get setup with an IV bag containing various routine medications to address symptoms of the flu. These medications will have us feeling better quickly, but the cost of the trip to the hospital would have anyone wishing they had listened to the advice of that notice in the pharmacy. IV infusions with my own special “cocktails” work wonderfully to accomplish the same effect as one would get in the hospital. In fact, many establishments all over the nation have recently sprung up offering just IV infusions. They will provide a menu of different blends, each touting unique benefits. In general, they will all provide substantial increases in hydration as well as a welcome pick-me-up.

Infusions can be targeted towards general well-being, immune defense, or even weight loss, depending on exactly what concoction you desire. After an IV infusion, you should expect to feel refreshed and even better than you did on your best day. Although they are most commonly known as the “hangover cure” for young and spry 20-somethings, mature professionals can benefit just as much after a particularly exhausting work week or if they feel a sickness coming on and want to avoid it. As the name implies, the benefits are administered intravenously. Moreover, the ingredients in these cocktails can be relatively potent. Ingredients can include corticosteroids, amino acids which affect metabolism, as well as factors that can affect blood alkalinity. They are almost always well-tolerated and legitimately produce positive effects in the body... but only a medical professional should deliver them. Because of this, I generally advise patients to seek IV infusions once a week, max – even once a month if steroidal ingredients are infused. Too much of a good thing will always lead to trouble, and trained medical staff can help to avoid this or spot when someone undergoing IV infusions has reached that point. Even just applying an IV requires a certain technique. It’s not uncommon to hear complaints of a friend leaving the hospital of the nurse who “kept stabbing me and couldn’t find the vein!” If it’s hard for them, then you had better not leave it to Joe Blow in the IV wagon. If you’re looking for the next medical fad, you’ve found it. IV infusions can produce rapid changes in the body for recovery or prevention of sickness. They work – but trust your body to those trained to care for it. So, the next time you find yourself unable to face the day, consider an IV infusion as your pocket ace. It’s quicker and cheaper than a trip to the ER. An International, multilingual Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Soler-Baillo brings to South Florida a refreshing, modern approach to Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Soler-Baillo earned his Medical Degree at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, trained in General Surgery at the Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, and received extensive training in Plastic Surgery in Miami, New York, and Texas. Dr. Soler-Baillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. For more information please visit, resultsmd.com or email info@soler-baillo.com.

THE BENEFITS OF CRYOTHERAPY OPTIMAL RESULTS: 2-3 SESSIONS PER WEEK

“I’m married with children--three of them. I also have a full-time job, a packed social calendar, and in my spare time (wink, wink), I teach at Pure Barre. So when I tell you that I loooove cryo, it’s because of the feelgood endorphins I enjoy after each and every session. It’s great for stress relief and for taking away my aches and pains. Try it and you’ll become a cryo addict, too!” Ann Fashionista Cryo Addict
