One of the easiest swaps to make are in your home’s light bulbs. Energy Star certified bulbs are easily found at most home improvement store and use about 70-90 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. In addition, they produce about 70 percent less heat, making them safer to operate.

Go meatless on Monday. The Meatless Monday movement was founded more than a decade ago and is now active in more than 44 countries. The theory behind it is that going meatless just once a week can not only reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, but also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water. Take your shoes off. Many people already abide by this simple tip, thinking of it as the equivalent of washing their hands. Aside from the simple idea of not tracking bacteria into your home, removing shoes can help avoid toxins such as herbicides and lead dust from entering. Want some numbers? A study by the University of Arizona collected 421,000 units of bacteria on the outside of the shoe, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Serratia ficaria.

In addition to swapping in water-saving showerheads and low-flow faucet aerators (available for some through the city of Pembroke Pines), there are simple ways to ease your water usage: check faucets and pipes for leaks; insulate your water pipes; take shorter showers; turn off the water while you brush your teeth; plant drought-resistant shrubs and plants; and water your lawn early in the day.

Did you know that keeping your refrigerator in the shade could help it keep cool easier? You can also save energy by avoiding the fridge-graze, peeking inside the fridge can cost more than you think when it comes to your energy bills. It goes without saying that appliances should meet Energy Star standards but you can save energy on the dishwashing side by always running a full load and air-drying dishes at the end of the cycle.

Bring your own bags. Most stores (including Publix and Whole Foods) offer reusable bags to customers, as traditional paper and plastic have been shown to take a big toll on our natural resources. In the same vein, look for ways to eliminate waste even when packing lunches- there are loads of affordable options in BPA-free plastic as well as the ever-popular Bento boxes for kids and adults alike.

Look around; almost everything in your home can be put to good use. Ideas? Try rinsing large plastic containers of sour cream or yogurt after use for storage and travel snacks; toss used coffee grounds over flower beds of acid-craving plants; or place foam packing peanuts in the base of potted plants to help with drainage.

It’s hot in South Florida, but we can still go green when it comes to being cool. Change your air filters regularly to avoid issues and, if possible, switch to a programmable thermostat to help keep energy costs down. Also- make sure equipment is serviced and up to date and set back the thermostat five-to-eight degrees when not at home.

Symphonettes Hold 11th Annual White Party Fashion Show

N FEBRUARY 26TH THE SYMPHONETTES held their annual fashion show celebrating their graduating seniors. More than 200 members, parents, and friends showed their support by attending the 2017 Symphonettes White Party Fashion Show. The Symphonettes, longstanding Miami institution, is a non-profit organization with a goal to raise money for local music and arts related charities and is made up of young women from various local High Schools. The Coral Gables Community Foundation, serves as the Symphonettes fiscal sponsor, enabling the group to function as a nonprofit organization. Celebrating the 11 graduating seniors, the event included a silent auction, brunch and fashion show Seniors Daniela Jaguan, Jeannie Szomstein, Caroline Symphonettes President, Florence Hawkins with casual and formal wear generously provided Symphonettes Rowland, Lily Chang, Alexis Godoy, Natalie Fredman, Claire Landon, and Fashion Show Coordinator, Alicia Stuart by Bella Quince and Fab’rik of Miami. OING FROM BEING AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT TO BEING IN middle school can seem scary, but in reality there is almost no difference at all. The only major differences are a bell schedule, multiple teachers, and a new campus. Here are some tips for surviving your three years in middle school: »» See if any of your elementary school friends are going to your school so you can start off the year with a friendly face. This will help you get used to your new environment, and this way you can have someone to sit with at lunch. »» Make sure you know your schedule. If you have it printed out and memorize it, you’ll always know which classes or lunch period you have. A friend of mine went to the wrong lunch and ended up being a half hour late to her class! »» Get to know your way around

school as quickly as possible. Knowing where your classes are, especially if you are at a large school, can be a big help, especially since you only have a few minutes to get to them. »» Try to branch out and make

friends in all of your classes. This will be a big help if you miss class and need homework, and class will definitely be more fun with a friend. »» Learn to be organized, so that you never forget homework, can have good notes to study, and can ace binder checks. »» Get to know your teachers. If you are comfortable with them, and know what kind of work they expect, you’ll be able to always do your assignments correctly. »» Beware of group projects. There are two types of people you could get in your group: people who will work, or slackers. Make sure that if you get an unmotivated member, you don’t let yourself do all the work. »» Don’t procrastinate. Even though it may seem easier, the work will catch up to you later. »» It’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared for a test. It depends on the teacher, but in most cases, tests are a pretty big deal, and you’ll want to know you studied as much as you could before you take a test. »» Be careful not to get swept up in popularity contests. In middle school, there are many social cliques, and if you let it get to your head, you’ll be just like any other kid who only wants to be popular and doesn’t care about anything else. As long as you are happy, that’s what’s important. »» Don’t submit to peer pressure. It’s important to make friends, but you should draw the line if anyone is trying to force you into anything, such as skipping school. »» Follow the school dress code and rules. You can express yourself by wearing necklaces, shoes or different hairstyles while staying within the dress code. You should also follow rules and behave so that you don’t get a referral, since those go on your student record. In conclusion, it is important to be studious, pay attention in class, and behave in school, but you should also be sure to leave time for yourself to make sure you have the best experience in middle school.

HOOSING A SUMMER CAMP CAN BE TRICKY. BALANCING YOUR CHILD’S interests with safety, friends and geography can make for a tough choice whether it be a specialized program, day camp or sleepaway option. We sat down with Samantha Durso, a camp advisor with Camp Experts & Teen Summers, a free and personalized summer camp and teen program advisory service, to get the lowdown on matching the kid with the camp.

WHAT ARE THE TOP 3 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A SUMMER PROGRAM? With so many factors involved it can certainly be an overwhelming process. Making the right choice is so important and many parents end up either sending their child to the camp they went to (and why not, it was the best camp ever!) or to a camp where their friends are going. The biggest factor to think about is, "Is it the right fit for my child?" Things to consider: 1. What is the programming structure and philosophy of the camp? 2. What measures does the camp take to ensure the safety of campers? 3. What is the geographic diversity like? A child from South Florida might feel more comfortable at a camp where they are not the only one from Florida.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS READY TO GO TO A SLEEPAWAY CAMP OR TRAVEL PROGRAM? Finding out the right time to attend sleepaway camp can be tricky. Don't judge entirely on the basis of age. Take cues directly from your child and be sure not to project your own fears on them. Too often, the child is ready but the parent is not. Projecting fear onto your child only cripples their future independence. Some questions to ask yourself: Are they showing interest in going to camp? Have they successfully spent the night away from home? Are they comfortable telling adults about their needs? Are they able to take care of their own hygiene? i.e. Shower?

WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE QUESTION TO ASK OF A CAMP WHEN YOU'RE COMPARING VARIOUS OPTIONS? What is the camp's philosophy? The camp director will set the tone. It starts from the top down. The philosophy of the director will be the direction of the staff. What is the philosophy on competition, sportsmanship, rules, bunk relationships, etc.? Make sure this matches your parenting style and your child's personality.

WHAT'S NEW ON THE CAMP SCENE THAT WASN'T AROUND (OR POPULAR?) 10 YEARS AGO? Ropes courses, zip lines and rock climbing walls are now very common. Your little ninja warrior in training will have a blast. Waterfront activities have also evolved from just waterskiing and canoeing. You can now find windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, even some that have lake front "water amusement parks" with slides & trampolines. Exercise rooms with spinning bikes can also be found in some camps. But more importantly, there is a return to the basics. Just about every camp should be unplugged.

Something is waiting for many children each summer and their parents don't even know it's out there. It's called the "summer slide," and it describes what happens when young minds sit idle for three months. As parents approach the summer break, many are thinking about the family vacation, trips to the pool, how to keep children engaged in activities at home, the abrupt changes to everyone's schedule-and how to juggle it all. What they might not be focusing on is how much educational ground their children could lose during the three-month break from school, particularly when it comes to reading. Experts agree that children who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backward. According to the authors of a report from the National Summer Learning Association: "A conservative estimate of lost instructional time is approximately two months or roughly 22 percent of the school year.... It's common for teachers to spend at least a month re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer. That month of re-teaching eliminates a month that could have been spent on teaching new information and skills."

For more than 200 years worldwide, and over half a century in Miami, Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart has taken its place as the only all-girls school grades preK-12 in the State of Florida, bringing the benefits of a girls-only environment to young women who choose the school for both the school year and summer enrichment. In fact, the school’s summer options give those who choose a co-ed education during the year the opportunity to reap the benefits of a single sex school while taking advantage of everything from sports to the arts to STEAM-based learning. “Our summer program echoes our school mission,” says Denise Del Valle, the school’s Director of Afterschool and Summer Programs. “We’re raising girls to be confident, to have strong convictions and courage.” “We run an all-girls’ school,” says Del Valle. “We see firsthand the benefits of single sex education, especially when it comes to science and engineering. Girls in an all-female environment take a lead in what they’re learning.” And science backs that up. A UCLA research study found that ten percent more girls' school graduates rate their confidence in math and computer abilities high at the start of college. “Coding is going to become a big part of these students’ future,” explains Del Valle. “We want our girls to have solid experience and confidence in this area. From an early age our girls use coding software to tell and create stories and play music before moving over to more sophisticated project such as building apps. Some of our summer programs place a focus on writing code and design… which will be the way of the future.” Imagine-DesignCode-Illustrate-Animate (just one of the all-day sessions) offers 4th through 7th graders the opportunity to do everything from designing and printing a 3D art piece to working in JavaScript. For those who want to get even more hands-on, the Maker Camp “empowers young women to explore and work with previous technologies and designs in the pursuit of understanding how and why the products were developed.” “It’s all about

inventing,” says Del Valle. “What’s available and what can I make? It’s about using tech and different things around us to create solutions for problems.” More traditional camps are also on the menu, including sports, drama, debate and academics. They also offer a “Fairytales from Around the World” option that places focus on Sacred Heart’s worldwide presence and the importance of learning about other cultures via legends, traditions and tales. “We invite girls from all faiths and ethnicities to participate” explains Del Valle. “Sacred Heart is about embracing all cultures and faith traditions. Our campers come from South America, Europe and other parts of the world.” Another reason Carrollton draws a diverse summer crowd is the dedication to a personal experience via

Do You Have Musical Treasures Hiding In Your Home? BY PENNY DANIELS

S YOUR OLD GUITAR COLLECTING DUST IN THE CLOSET? WHAT ABOUT THOSE vinyl records you just came across in your spring-cleaning? And how about that old clarinet you played in the high school marching band, does it still work? Are these musical treasures “worth” anything? Who knows, they may be worth their weight in gold. A musical instrument is more than just a piece of wood or metal–it’s an investment. But they are not valuable just because they’re old. Manufacturing technology has enabled companies to produce masses of musical instruments at one time. For example, the old Sears, Roebuck and Montgomery Ward mail order catalogs going back to the late 19th century offered complete violin outfits as well pianos, guitars, banjos, and brasses for a minimum cost. These instruments may not be worth anything other than a sentimental value. And those old vinyl records you found. Gosh, the memories that comes to mind when you look at the old album covers. Is your music collection insured? Is the collection worth money? Only a professional appraiser can answer that question. But before seeking an appraisal, make a list of your albums and include the following information: List if the vinyl is a 45, 33 or 78 LP. List the artist, album title and the condition it is in. After you have a list, now it’s time to have them assessed by a professional. It is recommended that you do not take your musical “treasures” to an antique appraiser who does not specialize in musical instruments. The instrument market is highly specialized. Only an expert appraiser can carefully evaluate the condition and research the origin or source of every musical instrument to ensure the appraisal is fair to current market value. WISE TEACHER ONCE TOLD ME THE FOLLOWING, “IF you miss one class, then you know; if you miss two classes, then the teacher knows; if you miss three classes, then everyone knows.” These words are completely and utterly true for any athlete, and a dancer is no exception. First, as a teacher, I spend hours and hours over the course of the school year trying to make each individual student the best dancer she can be. That includes the following: stretching her to her maximum potential; strengthening the newly stretched muscles so they can hold higher and better lines; and mastering the technical and artistic nuances that make every student look as if dancing on the tips of her toes is effortless. Every ballet class builds on the one before it and when a dancer misses one class, she slides backwards instead of moving forward. Now imagine if a dancer is dancing ten hours a week and has made remarkable changes to her flexibility and strength -- what would happen if she all of a sudden stopped dancing for even one week? A very important part of a ballet dancer’s body is, of course, her feet. There are hundreds of muscles, tendons and ligaments in your foot and ankle, and we use all of them! Dancers have to not only stand on the tips of their toes without falling off, but they also have to twirl, balance and jump on those toes as well. Every class a dancer takes strengthens those muscles in her feet, even if she is not on pointe. This enables her to point her toes harder, jump higher and shape her feet to the proper positions that each intricate step demands. Working on strengthening and stretching in every lesson is only part of the dynamic of each ballet class. Taking classes regularly also means mastering new steps. Learning technical ballet steps is like learning the alphabet. Once those individual steps are taught then the students learn how to articulate those steps in a combination; or to finish my analogy, a sentence. As the student advances she learns how to put these complicated sentences together to make beautiful dances. Every teacher understands that the body does need rest and some time to recuperate from the harsh demands of ballet and pointe. We also understand that family vacations are important too! It is normal to take a week off or even a bit more, but any longer than that and the dancer’s body starts to deteriorate and significant muscle strength and flexibility is lost. You may be wondering to yourself, “Does my child have to dance all summer long?” The best answer I can give you is the following: If your child dances at her studio two days a week or more then, yes, she definitely needs to dance over the summer. NE OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS I GET ASKED by parents is: “What is the correct age to start braces?” which is usually accompanied by the comment “It seems that braces are put on so early these days!” And in fact you may have noticed quite a few third and fourth graders around town running about with braces on their teeth. So what is the deal? Today, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a checkup with an orthodontic specialist no later than age seven. This is not to say that every seven-year-old requires orthodontic treatment. Timing for orthodontic treatment is based on more than chronological age; it is dependent on a number of factors, including dental development, jaw development, the way a patient is biting, as well as esthetics. An early evaluation with an orthodontist allows the identification of potential problems that may require monitoring, or in other cases early treatment. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases the orthodontist will be able to achieve results at an early age that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.

Some examples of situations requiring early treatment are crossbites, oral habits, severe overbite, or severe underbite. These scenarios should be corrected when there is a mix of baby and permanent teeth present, and a second phase of treatment (braces) is typically needed at a later date when the remaining baby teeth fall out. Aside from scenarios such as those mentioned, most of the time a single phase of braces is indicated once all of the baby teeth have fallen out, which is commonly somewhere between the ages of 10-12 but varies greatly from child to child. EING “IN THE ZONE” IS ABOUT MORE THAN just a heart rate at Redzone Fitness. The South Florida-based women-only fitness studio (it has locations in both Coral Gables and Pinecrest with a third on the way) takes clients through anywhere from three-to-five fitness zones per class, but for owners Glenn Greer and Luis Behar it’s the community and personal relationships that they have built within their group training that truly encapsulates what they’re trying to accomplish on a daily basis. “We have to excite our client from day one to year two or three,” says Greer. “We’re always asking our clients how we can make things better and Luis and I are very hands-on in creating homegrown workouts every day.” The method behind RedZone is simple: Each workout zone (in about nine to 16 minute blocks each) provides a unique format of cardio intervals and strength training exercises in classes of no more than 21 students. The blocks include work on treadmills, Cybex Arc Trainers, indoor rowing, weights and floor strength training and push client heart rates to peak performance before allowing for active recovery. Heart rates are monitored by Polar, letting clients see their actual heart rate feedback. Greer says this not only keeps clients interested and excited but targets the entire body at a pace and level that’s easily adjusted for any fitness level. “Whether someone is 25 and in great shape or a little older and working with knee issues we can help them get the most out of their time,” he says. “Our clients don’t have to think. From illustrated visuals to trainers right there to go over each movement, we can modify anything and create a proper exercise for them.” RedZone in its current form is the culmination of more than 15 years of work by Greer and Behar. After starting out in the personal training realm and opening a small gym in Coral Gables, the duo

saw potential in creating a women’s only program. “For years we always had a women’s only concept of group training,” says Greer, who eliminated mirrors in the studio in an effort to make all clients more focused and more comfortable. “We noticed our clientele was majority women. When other women’s only gyms came out we were motivated to do it the right way.” That’s when their “30-in-a-hurry” concept was born, taking the then-trending idea of boot camps and continuing to evolve it into small group training sessions. What began with just six students per class soon expanded to 12 and then, with an influx of capital from a former student, to its current 21. “When we started with the boot camps it was tough- it’s very repetitive and the rain and heat can interfere with classes and performance. We really evaluated what we wanted to accomplish and we started from there,” says Greer. Today the studios draw a wide variety of clients who come for not only the workout but also the atmosphere. “We max out our facility at 300 students,” explains Greer of the growing RedZone community. “Everyone feels comfortable, there’s no competition. You come in, you have a great workout and then you’re on your way.” The team is also expanding on their commitment to philanthropy with a new “Check-in for Charity” initiative that donates money to various organizations (a recent partner was local animal rescue Paws 4 U and the will soon partner with Amigos for Kids) when clients check-in to classes on social media. “We really are different from other programs. We’re here to help everybody,” says Greer of comparisons to other programs. “I want to be the best women’s only fitness program we can be.” Redzone Fitness is located at 11845 South Dixie Hwy. FIU FIRST GENERATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

Having emigrated from Cuba at the age of 10, Juan Enjamio knows firsthand what it means to be a first-generation college graduate. Enjamio went on to graduate from the University Miami School of Law and now acts as Managing Partner at Hunton & Williams’ Miami office, but he has never forgotten the importance his own parents placed on higher education and the support he received from early mentors. To that end it was a natural fit for Enjamio to lead his firm to the First Generation Scholarship Program, an initiative created FIU College of Law Dean Alex Acosta . “I was fortunate to have been mentored early in my career by great lawyers who instilled in me the understanding that a law license included the responsibility to use our talents and opportunities to help others,” says Enjamio. “I have been blessed with opportunities that others, who are very talented, have not experienced. I feel an obligation to help them.”

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP:

The scholarship acts as financial aid for first-generation students, regardless of race or social background, with firms donating half or full tuition for a single student and FIU matching. The program has raised more than $400,000 and brought more than 20 firms on board since its inception. “For a few years I have contributed personally to the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarship, a scholarship at the University of Florida that helps first generation college students,” says Enjamio. “Through the scholarship, hundreds of very talented young people, who would otherwise not have been able to go to college, have fulfilled their dreams of a college education. When I learned that Dean Acosta had instituted a similar program at the FIU Law School, I made sure our firm became an early sponsor.”

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY

Enjamio says the scholarship benefits not just the students, but the South Florida community; helping to foster a diverse legal community and keeping local talent within our borders. “[These scholarships] improve our community and our profession,” says Enjamio. “These students are likely to remain in South Florida. They enrich our community with the diversity of their talents. We are a poorer community if we don’t help foster the talents of these young people.” Of course, Enjamio admits, there is also the added benefit of seeing such students realize their own talents and potential. “I remember speaking with sons and daughters of immigrants who never thought attending college (much less law school) was feasible. Today they are professionals. Their gratitude is immense.”

But what is vision therapy and how does it work? Therapy

WHAT IS A VISION THERAPY PROGRAM? Vision therapy sessions include procedures designed to enhance the brain’s ability to control eye alignment, eye movements, focusing ability, and eye teamwork. The visual skills are developed through the use of specialized computer and optical devices, including therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters. Throughout the vision therapy process, a person maximizes their visual skills to become more effective in school, at work, or on the playing field.

WHAT DOES A SESSION ENTAIL? Like many skills, visual skills are developed. Therefore, they can generally be improved through proper therapeutic techniques. In vision therapy, the doctor prescribes visual tasks to be practiced under controlled conditions with the direction of a vision therapy technician. Repetition of these tasks enhances vision by coordinating and improving eye movements, focusing ability, eye teaming, eye-hand coordination and visual information processing skills.

HOW LONG DOES VISION THERAPY TAKE? Weekly office visits are combined with daily home exercises to practice the skills learned in the therapy room. A typical program will last a few months, although the total duration can vary based on the nature and complexity of the condition, the age and motivation of the patient, as wells as other factors.

IS IT COVERED BY INSURANCE? While each insurance plan is different, they do at times reimburse for the evaluation. After the evaluation we can provide you with the information you need to give to your insurance company to help in determining benefits. Our office will assist you as best we can.

WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS YOU HAVE A VISION ISSUE? There are many but some of the common signs could be anything from rubbing eyes frequently or complaints of blurred vision. If your child closes or covers one eye or frequently loses their place when reading, those can also be signs that you may want to look into further.

HE RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE SEASON IS HERE, ALBEIT more a perception than reality. In South Florida, we enjoy a pretty stable market year-round, with a slight fluctuation. There are some families that make their move around the school year calendar which increases the number of buyers and sellers during spring and summer. We also enjoy the business that the snowbirds represent from north and south during their respective winters, too. When it’s time to make your move please consider there are key decisions before putting your home on the market. 1. Know your home, the good and the bad. Have a full checkup done from the roof to the plumbing pipes. Include inspections of the septic tank, termites and pests, mold and quality of water for those with homes that get their water from wells. With the findings decide on what you’re going to fix and not. 2. Invest the sweat equity and finish the to-do list. Paint that wall, finish fixing the cabinet, donate the things that you cannot use anymore and throw out the things that are overdue. 3. Clutter can be very expensive to keep. Less stuff in the home puts more money in your pocket. You’re moving anyway, start packing and put the filled boxes in your garage. 4. Price your home at fair market value. Forty percent of buyers that can afford your home will not even look at it online if it is priced above fair market value. Don’t be the highest bidder on your own home, unless you want to keep it. 5. Realize that the investment made in remodeling the home will not be fully recovered, if at all. Per NAR the Projected Mean Percentage Appreciation for the PROJECTED next five years is around 3% Mean Percentage Appreciation per annum on a nationwide scale. Florida is projected at a 6.3% increase for the next year alone. The market from Coral Gables to Palmetto Bay continues to be stable and overall a balanced market with an average of 6 months of inventory available for sale. The inventory for higher end homes continues saturated with an average of six months to sell a home that is priced at fair market value. The market for homes listed for less than one million dollars is at 3-4 months. We find when working with buyers that their perception of value is greatly influenced by the care that sellers put into the home. It’s visible when buyers are walking through the house and they are mentally listing the projects they would have to take on when considering the home. As a seller, take the maintenance issues off the table and the buyers will focus on the projects that will make the home what they want it to be. nternational Women's Day was recognized in Palmetto Bay on March 8 2017 - It was my honor to recognize strong community leadership in Palmetto Bay via proclamation. Palmetto Bay was well represented this day through Council member Larissa Siegel Lara, Village Clerk Missy Arocha as well as Directors Corrice Patterson, Olga Cadaval, Fanny Carmona and Village Police Operations Lt. Maria Guerra – from the community: Rabbi Rachel Greengrass, Marni Lennon, Lisa Heller Green, and Margie Buchbinder. April is Parks Master Plan month – Palmetto Bay is already known as the “Village of Parks” – your input is requested to determine what changes or even if any changes are needed to our parks master plan. There are a few items that I look forward to including the restoration of items previously removed from our Coral Reef and Palmetto Bay Parks playgrounds including the “Apollo”. I am also looking forward to sensory gardens, which may be an outstanding project to involve our Palmetto Bay Garden Club. Parks construction and operation is very expensive. Grant money is far from plentiful. Please recall that I successfully worked with our original Village Council and Staff to partner with organizations/sources including the Trust For public Land and Florida Communities Trust, FRDAP and even the SFWMD to obtain well over $4 million for Thalatta Estate. We have to be very smart in any changes and not simply change for change sake. New suggestions for park activities include “pickleball.”. I obviously want to hear from everyone. Please follow the meetings schedule posted on the village website. Five Summer Camp Safety Tips BY MITCHELL PANTER, ESQ., PANTER, PANTER & SAMPEDRO, P.A.

S A CHILD I SPENT SEVERAL SUMMERS IN THE MOUNtains of West Virginia at a camp. We rode horses, swam, played sports and had a great time. We were carefree and worry free. But times have changed. Many years later when my children wanted to go to camp in the mountains we had different thoughts. Would it be safe? Would they be safe? What precautions and preparations did the camp take to ensure the safety of our children? As a parent and attorney these were our concerns. And they should be yours too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big believer in sleepaway camps. Children learn to be independent, parents get a break away from the kids. But you should do some work investigating the camp before shipping the kids off to the mountains. 1. Find out about Medical Policies and Procedures Does the camp have a full time doctor or nurse on premises? Is there a health care facility in easy reach to the camp? Is there anyone at the camp trained in a variety of health care issues? Are there special needs for your child, and if so, is the camp capable of caring for your child's special needs? Before your child goes to camp you should check their health and make sure they are able to handle the conditions. Make sure that your child has a full medical exam prior to attending camp and that he or she is completely up to date on their medical care and treatment. You should also provide the camp with notice of any specific allergies or issues which may affect your child. Make sure the camp has any specific medications on hand to assist your child if necessary. 2. What are the Safety Procedures for the Camp Camp activities include boating, horseback riding, sports and hiking. What safety procedures are in place for any physical activities your child may participate in while at camp? Find out who will be supervising the activities, what safety precautions are available and what training do the counselors or leaders have that enable them to safely care for your children during the various activities. 3. Camp Transportation If your child is to be transported during the camp season find out the method and manner of transportation. If they are travelling in a bus, how safe is the bus, how often are they serviced? Is the bus and the camp insured when transporting your child? Is the driver of the bus insured? 4. Emergency Contacts You should make sure that you provide the camp with a useful and reliable emergency contact. Whoever is identified as the emergency contact should be a responsible person that is responsive and reliable. Provide email contact information as well as a secondary emergency contact. If you will be travelling or out of reach while your child is at camp, make sure that the camp has this information as well as the secondary emergency contact information 5. Camp Accreditation There are organizations that review the safety of camps. The American Camp Association (ACA) is such an organization. This group reviews camp standards to ensure that your camp is meeting the highest standards and complying with camp laws and regulations. Camp should be a great experience for both the campers and parents. Camps should provide a safe and nurturing environment for your children. Take an interest in your camp selection, ask for references, visit the camp website, check their credentials and remember to have fun.

E ALL LOVE OUR PETS AND CONSIDER THEM PART of the family. But, would you be willing to custom order a duplicate of your dog or cat as the end of his or her life approaches? Or, would you adopt a totally different pet instead? Well, it has been a while since the first cloned mammal, Dolly The Sheep, was successfully produced from an adult skin cell in 1996. In the past 20 years the cloning technique has been further developed, and nowadays we have cloned sheep, pigs, goats, cows, ferrets, dogs, cats and horses, among other animals. In fact, cloning is well accepted in some fields, such as the livestock arena. A cloned animal is a genetic duplicate of the original animal that is born at a later time. Although the cloned animal is genetically identical to the original, the temperament is not exactly the same. This is because it is partially determined by genes, In the U.S. pet cloning, even though controversial, is legal. The first pet cloned successfully was a cat, in 2004 in Texas. Since then many dogs and cats have been cloned. Even though pet cloning represents a small market, there is consistent demand for the procedure.

Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, a cloning company based in South Korea, pioneered the pet cloning technique, and has already cloned more than 700 dogs successfully (sooam.com). The company has cloned highly trained search-rescue dogs and police dogs for South Korea, as well as highly priced pets for U.S. clients. The average price for a cloned pet is from $100,000 to $150,000. Closer to home ViaGen, a Texas based company, delivered the first U.S. born foal in 2010, and its first cloned puppy in 2016 (ViaGenpets.com). The price for a cloned pet by this company ranges from $25,000 to $50,000 per clone. In addition, they offer a genetic preservation program that allows preservation of adult cells from the original animal with the goal of producing a clone in the future. This company also caters to clients in the UK, where animal cloning is against the law. The sport of polo is the most open equine discipline for animal cloning. Highly priced polo horses are been cloned in large numbers by an Argentina-based company (cretsviewgenetics.com.ar). The company is the world’s leader in equine cloning, having produced so far around 200 cloned foals priced from $80,000 to $200,000 each. But, what does the cloning process involve? Pet Cloning (Cont.) a tissue biopsy kit to the client. A veterinarian will be requested to obtain a skin biopsy the size of a dime from the original pet. This can be obtained under sedation or up to 12 days post mortem if the pet has already passed away. About six months after the company receives the adult skin cell biopsy, the eight-week old clone pet is delivered to the client. It does sound simple. However, pet cloning is extremely controversial raising debate regarding the morality and ethics of the procedure. Those in favor argue that cloning does not contribute to the dog and cat overpopulation; it facilitates important scientific knowledge to researchers, strengthens the humananimal bond, and does not involve inhumane treatment of animals. Those against the procedure contend that this industry sells a false expectation that the cloned pet will be a complete identical twin of the original pet. They argue that the cloning procedure causes pain and distress on the animals involved, and have extremely high failure and mortality rates. The Humane Society condemns pet cloning due to an already existing overpopulation of animals and the potential for animal suffering. Pet cloning even though commercially available, is still an experimental technology. Many clones are produced that are born in poor health, born with defects, or stillborn. About 12 surrogate mothers need to be impregnated to ensure a successful clone. At rare times when more than one healthy clone is produced, and the client request is for only one clone, what is supposed to be done with the rest? Before considering cloning of a beloved pet, proceed with caution and consider instead saving a life by adopting an abandoned shelter animal. The world for that pet will change forever. I’ve Called the Lawyer, Now What? BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH

EOPLE GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE THINK ONCE THEY hire a lawyer, they are fine. Not so! There is so much more that goes into a divorce. Although your attorney is the key piece, there are several pieces to this puzzle. Divorce is an emotional, spiritual, financial and legal mine field; therefore you need a team approach.Thinking of divorce is overwhelming and an area one might not know how to navigate unless of course you are Elizabeth Taylor and have divorced seven times! So for those of you not so experienced in divorce, here is a guideline. 1. Hire a divorce coach and here are the reasons why it’s worth the investment. A divorce coach will pull everything together for you, which includes: cating your needs; »» Assist you in determining what is most important to you in the divorce process; »» Teaching conflict resolution skills; »» Assist you in creating goals for what you »» Assisting in developing co-parenting want for you and your family presently skills; and moving forward; »» Assisting in developing a parenting plan with your spouse; »» Identifying and prioritizing your concerns; »» Assisting in setting up post divorce goals; »» Helping understand each stage of the »» Assist you in managing the emotions that are part of the divorce process and divorce; in reducing stress; »» Giving you unbiased, objective and educated information; »» Assisting you in strengthening your communication skills and communi»» Reducing the cost of the divorce. 2. Decide what type of divorce process works best for the both of you. There is litigated, collaborative and mediation. Litigated is the most common and “traditional” divorce, where each party gets their own attorney and financial person. Just because the word litigated is used, doesn’t mean you will end up in court but that is always an option. In collaborative, both parties have their own attorney but a financial neutral and a divorce coach/mental health professional that work as part of their team. This type of divorce proves to be less contentious and opens up communication between parties. Mediation is the third choice where by the parties go to a neutral mediator and come up with an agreement, which they then bring to their own attorneys to review. 3. Interview and hire the appropriate attorney or mediator. If you choose to go the collaborative route, you will need to find an attorney specifically trained in collaborative. Remember, you are hiring an attorney to get you the best agreement possible, not to be your new best friend. 4. Meet with your financial professional that works closely with your attorney. It’s always advantageous to work with people who have a good working relationship with your attorney. 5. If appropriate to your case, meet with an estate attorney before mediation so that all changes/issues can be addressed before or at mediation and not after the ink has dried on your agreement. 6. Meet with a financial planner before mediation as well. You need to have a clear picture of what your future will look like before you start negotiating. Just like every marriage is unique, so is every divorce. Just because your friend or family member used a certain attorney or wrote their agreement on the back of a napkin over wine, doesn’t mean yours can be that way. Do your due diligence and you need to feel comfortable about your choices and decisions. This will be the first step and the most important one, into your new life. E SEE THE NOTICES IN THE PHARMACY EVERY YEAR – It’s time for your flu shot! Most of us would continue on our way and pay the advice no mind. Unfortunately, when the flu or the most recent stomach bug going around does hit, we can hardly get out of bed, much less make it to work or school. These common illnesses can even sometimes be serious enough to land someone in the hospital. In this instance, one would usually get setup with an IV bag containing various routine medications to address symptoms of the flu. These medications will have us feeling better quickly, but the cost of the trip to the hospital would have anyone wishing they had listened to the advice of that notice in the pharmacy. IV infusions with my own special “cocktails” work wonderfully to accomplish the same effect as one would get in the hospital. In fact, many establishments all over the nation have recently sprung up offering just IV infusions. They will provide a menu of different blends, each touting unique benefits. In general, they will all provide substantial increases in hydration as well as a welcome pick-me-up.

Infusions can be targeted towards general well-being, immune defense, or even weight loss, depending on exactly what concoction you desire. After an IV infusion, you should expect to feel refreshed and even better than you did on your best day. Although they are most commonly known as the “hangover cure” for young and spry 20-somethings, mature professionals can benefit just as much after a particularly exhausting work week or if they feel a sickness coming on and want to avoid it. As the name implies, the benefits are administered intravenously. Moreover, the ingredients in these cocktails can be relatively potent. Ingredients can include corticosteroids, amino acids which affect metabolism, as well as factors that can affect blood alkalinity. They are almost always well-tolerated and legitimately produce positive effects in the body... but only a medical professional should deliver them. Because of this, I generally advise patients to seek IV infusions once a week, max – even once a month if steroidal ingredients are infused. Too much of a good thing will always lead to trouble, and trained medical staff can help to avoid this or spot when someone undergoing IV infusions has reached that point. Even just applying an IV requires a certain technique. It’s not uncommon to hear complaints of a friend leaving the hospital of the nurse who “kept stabbing me and couldn’t find the vein!” If it’s hard for them, then you had better not leave it to Joe Blow in the IV wagon. If you’re looking for the next medical fad, you’ve found it. IV infusions can produce rapid changes in the body for recovery or prevention of sickness. They work – but trust your body to those trained to care for it. So, the next time you find yourself unable to face the day, consider an IV infusion as your pocket ace. S I BOARDED THE PLANE TO BASEL, Switzerland to catch my Viking River Cruise, I swore on a stack of Bibles I would be bored to death among all the old people on that cruise. I’m ashamed to say that was my perception of what a river cruise offered; no casino, no bars, no shows and no pool all equated to boredom. Well as Gomer Pyle would say, “Surprise, surprise, surprise.” I walked onto the Viking Kvasir in Basel to smiling faces and helping hands. I was led to my stateroom, which had a lovely balcony and ample room for my two large suitcases (to this day I still don’t know how to travel light). Eager to explore my new surroundings, I freshened up and headed to the main room of the ship. There I found the one and only bar with guests already ensconced. And lo and behold, they were young. I pulled up a stool and became fast and furious friends with the bartender and maitre d’. So, here is what I found to be one of the many perks of a river cruise- it’s your own floating Cheers. Everyone knows your name. No matter where I went on the ship, I was not only greeted but also engaged in conversation. The staff was always so willing to assist in anyway possible, right down to the pianist who would play well after his time was up. Ok, I bribed him with a drink but he cheerfully stayed. If you are looking for and expect that big cruise ship feel, don’t book your ticket on Viking because that is not what a cruise like this is about. What it is about is that feeling of being home, it is small without all the distractions, guests will mingle with each other more and the staff is pretty entertaining. They spend time with you and do the little things that you don’t get on a huge cruise ship. For example, one day after an excursion, we all came down the walkway and some of the staff were on the upper deck with a banner that read “Welcome Home” and singing and clapping. This is the type of thing that makes a river cruise so memorable. Traveling alone can have its awkward moments, such as dinnertime, but my maitre d’, Darko, made sure that didn’t happen. He ushered me straight away to a table with women all my age and settled me in. Needless to say, the Pitt girls and I became family on that trip and still stay in touch. Speaking of mealtime, the food was outstanding. The menu was fabulous each and every day down the Rhine. The service was impeccable and my wine glass was always full. My cruise took me through four countries and nine cities. My first port of call was Breisach, Germany where I disembarked to explore the magical Black Forest. Next stop was Strasbourg, France, which made me feel like I had stepped into a fairy tale. I visited Strasbourg Cathedral and rode the carousel that sits in Cathedral Square. Day four found me at Heidelberg Castle and enjoying traditional German food and music at a tavern in Rudescheim. Day five was spent cruising to Koblenz, Germany where I was completely enthralled by the little towns, castles and ruins that dotted the riverbank. I headed to Marksburg Castle and yet another glimpse into a time gone by. Day six was Cologne, Germany where I was awe struck by the gothic cathedral. Day seven was a drive into the picturesque Dutch countryside to see the nineteen, mid 18th century Kinderdijk Windmills. The next morning I said goodbye to all my new friends and disembarked for three days in Amsterdam (another story for another time). Drifting off to sleep on the plane back to Miami, there was only one thought on my mind. How could I return to my little floating home on the Rhine? More than 250 Gulliver seniors, along with ecology experts and volunteers from Surfrider Foundation's Miami chapter, teamed up to remove tons of invasive species and plant 500 indigenous sea oats. Overall, this effort helped restore the dune and preserve the unique ecosystem along the Miami Beach coastline.mAs part of this initiative, clean-up crews removed large swaths of the invasive scaevola plant as well as plastic debris and litter from the dune and beach areas between 13th and 14th Street along Ocean Drive. Several tons of unwanted foliage and debris were also cleared from the environmentally sensitive area before beneficial, native sea oats were planted.

Mayor Joseph M. Corradino and fellow councilmembers proudly welcomed Miami icon and legendary coach Don Shula to Evelyn Greer Park on March 15th. The mayor proclaimed it Don Shula Day in Pinecrest. Coach Shula was in Pinecrest on the occasion of the grand opening of Shula Burger. He is the winningest coach in NFL history, led the 1972 Miami Dolphins to the NFL’s only perfect season and is a two-time Super Bowl champion.
