FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF MIDDLE-AGED AND elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.

with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS?

Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.

HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK?

IS IT SAFE?

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?

HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION?

The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller,

A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

AY FLOWERS ARE BLOOMING ACROSS South Florida this month, bringing with them the end of school, the beginning of the rainy season and, thankfully, a time to sit back and slow down. This month we celebrate the beauty of our city with our annual Staycation guide—the best of what’s available to us here in South Florida sans planes, trains, checked bags and 4-hour road trips. From Miami Beach to the Gulf Coast, we’ve got you covered. We also take a closer look at the trend of home vacation rentals and give you some solid advice on how to choose the right home and what to look for in an owner or property manager. Elsewhere we connect with our friends at Cutler Bay Solar Solutions, who specialize in helping South Floridians manage their electric bills by offering up solar options for everything from pool heater to whole home installations. We also spoke with Miss Florida Teen USA Victoria Disorbo about not only her upcoming pageant pressures but her dedication to a cause close to her heart and her desire to keep a close friend’s memory alive through her own perseverance. We celebrate the incredible achievements of our local schools and community leaders in Community Call and find inspiration in the story of two best friends who gave the ultimate gift of life to their loved ones. Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find us online at TheFloridaVillager.com.

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Publix Super Markets to Kick Off Their Annual March of Dimes Fundraising Campaign

I

T ALL STARTED WITH A SMALL GROUP OF ASSOCIATES OVER TWO decades ago, and now Publix is the #1 National March for Babies Corporate Partner. It’s a giant leap for the six state based grocer, whose company wide campaign today involves over 190,000 associates in 1,145 stores with the support of their customers. Publix’s annual register campaign launched on Saturday, April 29 and runs until May 20 in all stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. “We are very proud of our 22-year history, and supporting healthier moms and stronger babies is an extension of who we are,” said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations. “We’ve always said, we have the most generous customers and the most passionate associates in the industry, and together, we are proud to support the March of Dimes and make a difference in the communities in which we live and work.” At checkout, associates will sell cutouts on which customers can write their name or the name of a baby they love.Publix aims to surpass last year’s record-setting fundraising amount of $7.1 million dollars, coupled with associate fundraising, which combined brought in over $7.4 million in 2016. Historically, Publix has raised over $65 million to help give every baby a fighting chance. “Earlier this year, we were proud to crown a new number one National March for Babies Corporate Partner for the first time in 30 years,” said Stacey Stewart, March of Dimes President. “Publix is one of our most valued partners. We are looking forward to their annual campaign and spending time with the associates.”

Victoria Disorbo

A Friend’s Mission CYSTIC FIBROSIS RESEARCH AND AWARENESS

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

BACKGROUND:

Disorbo, 19, is the reigning Miss Florida Teen USA and will represent the state at the Miss Teen USA pageant this summer, but the Lynn University sophomore will take the stage with much more on her mind than evening gowns. Though she had performed as an actress and singer, and even placed in the top 16 in the Miss Florida Teen USA pageant in 2015, the loss of her friend in early 2016 pushed her to take a break from the stage. “I thought I would never compete again,” says Disorbo. “But then one night at 3 a.m. I texted my pageant coach and said I wanted to get back to work. I realized pageantry was a way for me to help others with cystic fibrosis by raising awareness and money to find a cure. When I’m on stage I think: You’re doing this for Julie and for every other cystic fibrosis patient out there.”

DRAWING ON INSPIRATION

Disorbo’s friend continues to be source of inspiration in her daily life as Miss Teen Florida USA, pushing her to find new ways to educate the public about the disease, which causes the cells that make mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids to become thick and glue-like, blocking tubes and ducts throughout the body. Over time, mucus builds up inside the airways making breathing a struggle. The mucus also traps germs and can lead to serious infections and severe lung damage. “Looking at Julie, you would never know she was sick,” says Disorbo. “She even wore heels in the hospital! She was always laughing, even when undergoing painful treatments. No matter how sick she was she always had a smile on her face. She never felt sorry for herself... I learned so much from her.”

65 ROSES

Another way Disorbo is raising awareness is as an author. Her first book, “Sixty Five Roses,” will be published at the end of May… which happens to be Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. The book is aimed at children, an audience she knew she could have a real impact on. The book chronicles the creative ways children with the disease and their friends can look at its treatments and effects. “If you teach children to appreciate every moment and live everyday as if it were their last then they will carry that through their entire life,” she says. Part of the proceeds from the book (available on victoriadisorbo.com at the end of the month) will be donated to organizations that further research and education on the disease.

Julie lived a very good life while she was here and contributed so much to the world and to me. I feel like it’s my calling to ensure her legacy lives on.” 14

PAGEANT PREP

In addition to her duties as Miss Florida Teen USA and her upcoming book release, Disorbo is busy prepping for the Miss Teen USA pageant… and the opportunity to make a national voice for herself and her friend. “I am preparing very rigorously, not just in the gym but mentally and emotionally,” she says. “ I am not just competing for a shiny crown, I'm competing for a voice and an opportunity to impact my community and carry on my best friend's legacy.”

Everything you ever wanted to know about solar energy but were afraid to ask

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

ROM SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF TO A SOLAR pool heater, making homes more energy efficient seems easier than ever these days. So why is it still such a mystery to so many? “At this point, the cost of solar has come down so much that it’s usually lower than what homeowners are paying,” says Raul Vergara, owner of Cutler Bay Solar Solutions. “I compare it to renting electricity versus buying electricity. With solar, homeowners own their own electricity.” Vergara should know, his company is the largest solar installer in the tri-county area and is responsible for the largest decrease in carbon emissions our area has seen in decades. We sat down with Vergara to look at the pros, the cons and the what, where and how of energy efficiency and to sort through the myriad of questions that come with making a change.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR CUTLER BAY SOLAR SOLUTIONS? Pretty much anyone, says Vergara. But more specifically, “Somebody who is using too much energy and they’re not sure how they’re using it… but they want to save money.” To that end Vergara and his team look over potential clients’ electric bills to see what typical energy consumption is and start from there.

WHAT PARTS OF THE HOME DOES THE COMPANY LOOK AT? For Vergara it generally comes down to four parts- the air conditioning, the water heater, the lighting and pool pumps. “If it’s something that’s on or running for a significant amount of time then we want to look at it,” he says.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY HOME IS A CANDIDATE FOR SOLAR ENERGY? Though it’s optimum to be facing south, 80 percent of South Florida homes are suitable for solar potential according to Vergara. The 20 percent that are not can sometimes come down to shading issues or roof types. Condos as well, may not have roof space for solar panels. For the majority however, the panels can even increase the value of a home. “Consumers are more savvy, they understand the value of solar,” says Vergara.

WHAT’S A GOOD PLACE TO START? Vergara says look to your water heater. “An electric water heater is on 24 hours a day,” he says. “That’s a lot of electricity. It’s a very easy, low-cost swap to go solar.”

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY? Though Vergara says consumers are more and more educated about solar energy, there is still a misconception that panels are just for the wealthy.

Raul Vergara, Owner, Cutler Bay Solar Solutions.

“Solar has now become affordable for everyone,” he says. Programs such as Ygrene can help homeowners take away the worry of up-front cost. “You can stop writing the check to FPL,” Vergara says. “The money is staying in your house.”

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP? Vergara and his team will come to potential clients’ homes to do an assessment, eventually giving owners what he calls a “roadmap” to energy efficiency. “We look at where can we mount panels, how many, what can we reduce,” he says. “We can take care of the process and help them on their way to energy independence.” To learn more about Cutler Bay Solar Solutions, please visit cutlerbaysolarsolutions.com or call them at 305-280-0638.

RE ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES PAINFUL FOR A PET? WILL a pet allow the insertion of needles into the skin? Does acupuncture really work? These are a few questions that veterinary doctors trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture get all the time Even though it has been a staple of Eastern Medicine for thousands of years, it is in the last 20 years or so that acupuncture has become a mainstream modality in Veterinary Medicine. In fact, many veterinary schools today include in their curriculum introductory courses on the basics of veterinary acupuncture. Research for acupuncture in animals is strong and continually developing. Many general practitioners, board certified veterinary neurologists and anesthesiologist, are seeking the post doctoral Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture. Why? Because it works.

Our Mission To provide the best and latest medical care to every patient by combining Conventional Medical approach with safe and effective Alternative Medicine methods.

Integrative “South Florida’s Premier Facility” Medicine & Rehabilitation · · Acupuncture is a modality within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It refers to the insertion of thin metal needles into specific sites of the body, called acupuncture points, for the treatment or prevention of diseases and pain. Acupuncture also refers to other types of stimulation of these points, such as an injection of fluid (e.g. vitamin B12), electrical stimulation, light stimulation with low level laser, or local heating with a smoldering herb called “moxibustion.” But how does it work? Acupuncture induces changes in the function of the brain that lead to changes at the level of the endocrine, autonomic, and circulatory systems. It also facilitates changes at the mental-emotional level. The analgesic effect caused by electroacupuncture, for example, is specifically mediated by the release of endorphins, serotonin and norepinephrine, and by the acupuncture’s ability to aid in muscle relaxation. Acupuncture works better for chronic problems by decreasing pain and inflammation, increasing energy levels, and reinforcing the action of the immune system. From the TCM point of view, it corrects the imbalances present in the body. It is not a cure all, but can work very well when indicated. It is very commonly used in conditions such as paresis, paralysis, musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., arthritis), skin disorders, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, epilepsy, and selective reproductive problems. Acupuncture also provides important advantages to pets with cancer including pain reduction, elimination of nausea, and improved glandular function following radiation therapy. To determine if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture therapy, a diagnosis is always the first step. This means that the doctor requires the same historical, physical and diagnostic information that is required for a conventional veterinary treatment. Aggressive pets are not candidates for acupuncture therapy. A typical trial period for acupuncture involves an “induction stage” of two to three treatments per week for at least two weeks. Since the effects of acupuncture are cumulative in nature, the benefits of the therapy will be short lived initially (1-2 days), but will then accumulate

Capillus BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

D

ORAL MAY BE EXPERIENCING A RUSH OF attention (think CityPlace and those Instagrammable Bocas House desserts) but the owners of Capillus knew the benefits of the city before it became a popular destination for South Floridians. The company, which provides information and innovative hair loss treatments for men and women, moved into their Doral space two years ago and has watched the area grow and evolve since. We sat down with We sat down with the company’s owners to to talk city benefits, laser hair treatments and their latest groundbreaking treatment.

WHAT YEAR DID YOU ESTABLISH CAPILLUS AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO IN DORAL? Capillus was founded in October 2012, and we moved to our present day 25,000 square foot location in Doral to expand our manufacturing facilities in June of 2015. We are a family owned-and-operated business with roots in Miami for more than 50 years, so operating outside of Miami was never an option for us, especially considering Miami¹s evolvement into an international business hub. The city of Doral has come a very long way in a very short time, and we recognized an opportunity to positively contribute to the community's growth in the business sector. It¹s a really exciting time to be doing business in Doral.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE AREA EVOLVE AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF BEING IN THE AREA? Doral has evolved into a really dynamic and energetic community over the past several years. The flourishing downtown has been a great asset for us-- there are an abundance of dining and entertainment options available for meetings with prospective clients. Plus, we’re centrally located to the airport, which is pivotal for us for distribution purposes. Doral’s central location also affords us the ability to attract the greatest pool of

30

THE FLORIDA VILLAGER

employees from the Miami-Dade and Broward County area because people are drawn to the thriving community.

HOW DID THE BUSINESS COME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PRODUCT/IDEA? We first came to learn about lasers while providing marketing services for Dr. Bernard Nusbaum an internationally renowned hair transplant surgeon based in Miami. Through our work with him, we developed an interest in laser hair therapy and realized that there was an opportunity to create a product better than what currently existed in the market; something that met the highest quality and regulatory standards, was effective, and that physicians could trust. The Capillus 272 laser cap was our first product. From there, we developed two new models at different price points, and then expanded into a line of clinical hair therapy products including shampoos, keratin fibers, and minoxidil.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR LASER CAP AND WHY IT¹S SO REVOLUTIONARY IN THE INDUSTRY? Capillus laser caps are the the world’s first, clinicallyproven, FDA-cleared laser cap to treat hair loss. Our caps are more discreet, eliminating the “shame factor” typically associated with hair loss treatment, and reasonable in price comparable to more cumbersome laser combs, helmets and domes in the market.

WHEN WILL THE LASER CAP BE AVAILABLE FOR OTC PURCHASE AND WHERE WILL IT BE SOLD? Capillus laser therapy devices are currently available on Amazon.com and select salons and retailers, in addition to our website, capillus.com

Let’s Talk Excess Hair… BY ROSANNA BERMEJO, MBA RN

A

SIDE FROM PAYING YOUR taxes and the fact that we are on this earth temporarily, another solid truth is that many of us don’t like excess hair. In fact, laser hair removal has been proven to be one of the most psychologically rewarding cosmetic procedures due to its impact on how we feel about ourselves. When we were babies, we had terribly cute Vellus Hair, which is simply the baby fine colorless hair that covers our body. But then comes puberty and hormonal changes in our body and as a result, some of this vellus hair is stimulated by androgens (hormones) to become darker, curlier, and coarser. We call that hair Terminal Hair. Hirsutism is unwanted terminal hair from excess androgens or increased sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens. Many times hirsutism is stimulated by hormones, with common causes including congenital adrenal hyperplasia, polycystic ovary syndrome, tumors, cushing’s syndrome, and medications. Other times the cause of hirsutism is unknown and that is considered idiopathic hirsutism. While we can

try to correct the excess hair with birth control, or medications such as metmorfin, or spironolactone; we usually need to tackle this situation with other alternatives of which I believe laser hair removal is one of the most effective ones. However, in the process of getting rid of that unwanted hair, we cannot forget to take care of our skin. In fact, our skin needs to be managed. The goal is to control the products that we use in order to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation, bumps, redness, and irritation. In this sense, remember to avoid sun protection and fade products that are “skin friendly”, to protect the skin barrier, and to not use irritating products. Instead, we recommend you use chemical free sunscreen, avoid antibiotics and irritating chemicals, and use sulfate free cleansers. Don’t use sunscreen with SPF above 40 because these may contain too many u/v absorbing chemicals resulting in a higher risk of hyperpigmentation. Some other examples include Kojic Acid and Hydroquinone, which are u/v sensitizers that make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure. When in doubt, just call Med Aesthetics Miami at 305-3567402. Feeling the Vibe

T

HESE DAYS IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S A WORKOUT for everyone. Something for the core fanatics, for the time-strapped, for the one who needs personal attention, for the easily bored… But what if there was one workout that covered all of it? That was the idea behind VibeClass, a Brazilian-born exercise program that’s made its way to South Florida. Building on its popularity in Brazil, VibeClass opened its first studio on South Beach last summer before taking up residency in South Miami in January, introducing the benefits of vibration to a new crop of students. “My partner in Brazil was using vibration as a supplement to his workouts but soon started looking into how to expand and scale his training into a full workout,” says Cary Sochin, Vibe’s managing parter and a longtime fitness expert in South Florida. “He brought in fitness professionals and the 10-station concept was created.” The workout, as Sochin explains, is made up of 10 stations, eight of which make use of vibrating platforms that intensify the exercise and add another dimension to the workout (the other two act a “freeform” exercises adapted by an on-site trainer). Students progress through the stations three times during the 45-minute program and are led through each exercise by a virtual trainer on a screen attached to the station and trainers are able to modify exercises and help students who have personalized needs. “It’s personal training in a group setting with a max of 10 people at a time,” says Sochin. “You can make a reservation but you’re not beholden to a class time because you’re working out on your own. It’s very easy for a trainer to rework the exercise to meet your needs

allowing for truly personalized training alongside the more technologicallydriven vibe stations. Class packages are available as well as monthly rates without any contracts or long-term commitments and times are flexible, allowing students to get a workout in on their time, not the studio. “As you advance and become more proficient and have mastered the circuit we can take students on and off the platforms to do intervals,” says Sochin. “The workout is scalable to every fitness level and every need.”

and then reset it back right away for the next person.” Adding to the workout is the addition of the vibration, a technique that has long been used to aid everyone from olympic athletes to astronauts and has been lauded for its ability to not only burn fat and calories quickly but to help with flexibility, strength and injury recovery. “It really is multi-dimensional training across all disciplines. It speeds up the process of gaining strength, stamina, everything,” says Sochin. “When you add the vibration you add another dimension. And that’s why the workout is superior.” These benefits also allow the workout to, well, work for everyone from elderly students coping with bone density issues to elite athletes looking to supplement their training. “Creative” trainers are also part of the draw—

Medical Acupuncture (Cont.) producing longer lasting effects. Once these longer lasting effects have been reached, the frequency of the sessions are tapered down to the minimum that will maintain the beneficial effects (“maintenance” stage”). Chronic problems often require longer induction stages, and the pet may need prolonged and perhaps lifelong maintenance. There are many reasons why we may not see a response to the acupuncture therapy. Among the main reasons to consider are an incorrect diagnosis, incorrect positioning of the needles, incorrect combination of points (acupuncture prescription), incorrect depth of insertion of the needles, incorrect stimulation (manual or electrical) of the needles once inserted in the skin, or simply because the specific medical condition is non-responsive to the treatment. When looking for a veterinary acupuncturist, it's important to remember that acupuncture is considered a medical procedure and, by law, only a licensed Veterinarian can provide the therapy. In addition, the doctor must have been awarded the post graduate Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture by an institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Lastly, as with any other medical modality, the medical instrument is only as good as the trained hands using it. Seek a veterinary acupuncturist with many years of experience in acupuncture therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine for best results. Veterinary acupuncture is a safe, natural, and effective treatment alternative for pets with no adverse effects. When considering treatments for your ailing pet, you owe it to them to put acupuncture at the top of your list. Hotels aren’t always the perfect choice for families traveling with large groups or those who have special needs. Sites such as Homeaway, VRBO and Airbnb offer great options for renting homes or apartments that can satisfy the needs of every traveler from the budget-minded to the luxury seeker. So how to choose a rental? Here are five things to remember when browsing your options… 1. Input your dates. Rates in popular vacation areas can change almost weekly, depending on the time of year or any holidays that may fall during that time. By inputting your dates from the beginning you’ll not only getter a clearer picture of what homes will cost, but it will help narrow the field significantly based on what’s already rented during that time. By the same token- searching various combinations of days or weeks (staying a full week versus four or five days) can sometimes yield a better rate in the big picture. 2. Read the details. And that means every detail. A home that states it can sleep seven may simply be a two bedroom with some pull-out couches. Most descriptions will give a detailed and clear picture of where bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas are located as well as what types of furniture, accessories and beds are in each. It’s no fun to show up expecting a King-size bed and ending up sharing a twin with your significant other. 3. Read the reviews. Most sites will have thorough reviews from past renters, making it easy to spot the homes that are popular… and those that aren’t. Reviews can tell you a lot about the cleanliness of the house, the amenities it offers and the location. They can also usually give you helpful hints about area attractions, restaurants and shops. 4. Do your homework. Don’t rely just on reviews, especially when it comes to location. Doing a simple Google Earth search can help give you a good idea of what’s around the home and how close (or far away) neighbors are. Make sure to reach out to friends and/or family in the area to check location as well or do a quick Facebook post to get free and helpful advice from your circle of friends. 5. Get a clear contact. Whether it be the owner, a property manager or a housekeeper, be sure to know who to contact in the area with any issues or problems. Most owners or property manager's will be happy to give you a cell number as well as lists of what to bring and where to go in town.
