FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF MIDDLE-AGED AND elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.

with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS?

Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.

HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK?

IS IT SAFE?

WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?

HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION?

The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller,

A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

AY FLOWERS ARE BLOOMING across South Florida this month, bringing with them the end of school, the beginning of the rainy season and, thankfully, a time to sit back and slow down. This month we celebrate the beauty of our city with our annual Staycation guide—the best of what’s available to us here in South Florida sans planes, trains, checked bags and 4-hour road trips. From Miami Beach to the Gulf Coast, we’ve got you covered. We also take a closer look at the trend of home vacation rentals and give you some solid advice on how to choose the right home and what to look for in an owner or property manager. Elsewhere we connect with our friends at Marshall Cosmétique Center, who offers the full scope of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures that includes reconstructive, body contouring and facial rejuvenation plastic surgery. We celebrate the incredible achievements of our local schools and community leaders in Community Call and find inspiration in the story of two best friends who gave the ultimate gift of life to their loved ones. Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Luis Almagro, secretario general de la OEA: Recibió las Llaves de Doral y la Orden del Exilio Venezolano Rómulo Betancourt BY DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYÁN

S

Capillus BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

D

ORAL MAY BE EXPERIENCING A RUSH OF attention (think CityPlace and those Instagrammable Bocas House desserts) but the owners of Capillus knew the benefits of the city before it became a popular destination for South Floridians. The company, which provides information and innovative hair loss treatments for men and women, moved into their Doral space two years ago and has watched the area grow and evolve since. We sat down with TK to talk city benefits, laser hair treatments and their latest groundbreaking treatment.

WHAT YEAR DID YOU ESTABLISH CAPILLUS AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO IN DORAL? Capillus was founded in October 2012, and we moved to our present day 25,000 square foot location in Doral to expand our manufacturing facilities in June of 2015. We are a family owned-and-operated business with roots in Miami for more than 50 years, so operating outside of Miami was never an option for us, especially considering Miami¹s evolvement into an international business hub. The city of Doral has come a very long way in a very short time, and we recognized an opportunity to positively contribute to the community's growth in the business sector. It¹s a really exciting time to be doing business in Doral.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE AREA EVOLVE AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF BEING IN THE AREA? Doral has evolved into a really dynamic and energetic community over the past several years. The flourishing downtown has been a great asset for us-- there are an abundance of dining and entertainment options available for meetings with prospective clients. Plus, we’re centrally located to the airport, which is pivotal for us for distribution purposes. Doral’s central location also

affords us the ability to attract the greatest pool of employees from the Miami-Dade and Broward County area because people are drawn to the thriving community.

HOW DID THE BUSINESS COME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PRODUCT/IDEA? We first came to learn about lasers while providing marketing services for Dr. Bernard Nusbaum an internationally renowned hair transplant surgeon based in Miami. Through our work with him, we developed an interest in laser hair therapy and realized that there was an opportunity to create a product better than what currently existed in the market; something that met the highest quality and regulatory standards, was effective, and that physicians could trust. The Capillus 272 laser cap was our first product. From there, we developed two new models at different price points, and then expanded into a line of clinical hair therapy products including shampoos, keratin fibers, and minoxidil.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR LASER CAP AND WHY IT¹S SO REVOLUTIONARY IN THE INDUSTRY? Capillus laser caps are the the world’s first, clinicallyproven, FDA-cleared laser cap to treat hair loss. Our caps are more discreet, eliminating the “shame factor” typically associated with hair loss treatment, and reasonable in price comparable to more cumbersome laser

combs, helmets and domes in the market.

WHEN WILL THE LASER CAP BE AVAILABLE FOR OTC PURCHASE AND WHERE WILL IT BE SOLD? Capillus laser therapy devices are currently available on Amazon.com and select salons and retailers, in addition to our website, capillus.com

Same Tag (Television, Arts, Group) ¿Su hijo tiene talento artístico? ¡Lea esto! POR DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYÁN

E

N SAME TAG SE ENSEÑAN ESTRATEGIAS DE ACTUACIÓN PARA LOS DIStintos mercados.

Sentir Venezuela 2017: 5ta edición Se muda a Doral POR DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYÁN

E

Hotels aren’t always the perfect choice for families traveling with large groups or those who have special needs. Sites such as Homeaway, VRBO and Airbnb offer great options for renting homes or apartments that can satisfy the needs of every traveler from the budget-minded to the luxury seeker. So how to choose a rental? Here are five things to remember when browsing your options… 1. Input your dates. Rates in popular vacation areas can change almost weekly, depending on the time of year or any holidays that may fall during that time. By inputting your dates from the beginning you’ll not only getter a clearer picture of what homes will cost, but it will help narrow the field significantly based on what’s already rented during that time. By the same token- searching various combinations of days or weeks (staying a full week versus four or five days) can sometimes yield a better rate in the big picture. 2. Read the details. And that means every detail. A home that states it can sleep seven may simply be a two bedroom with some pull-out couches. Most descriptions will give a detailed and clear picture of where bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas are located as well as what types of furniture, accessories and beds are in each. It’s no fun to show up expecting a King-size bed and ending up sharing a twin with your significant other. 3. Read the reviews. Most sites will have thorough reviews from past renters, making it easy to spot the homes that are popular… and those that aren’t. Reviews can tell you a lot about the cleanliness of the house, the amenities it offers and the location. They can also usually give you helpful hints about area attractions, restaurants and shops. 4. Do your homework. Don’t rely just on reviews, especially when it comes to location. Doing a simple Google Earth search can help give you a good idea of what’s around the home and how close (or far away) neighbors are. Make sure to reach out to friends and/or family in the area to check location as well or do a quick Facebook post to get free and helpful advice from your circle of friends. 5. Get a clear contact. Whether it be the owner, a property manager or a housekeeper, be sure to know who to contact in the area with any issues or problems. Most owners or property manager's will be happy to give you a cell number as well as lists of what to bring and where to go in town.

Heat oven to 375 F. Spray nonstick spray in 8-by-8-inch pan or similar. Unroll dough on floured surface and gently stretch until dough is about 8 by 12 inches. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons brown sugar over dough then evenly space six slices of ham and six slices of cheese on top. Starting on short side, begin rolling dough jelly roll style. Cut into six pieces. Repeat with second piece of dough. Place all 12 buns inside pan. Sprinkle grated cheese on top. Bake 20-25 minutes until buns are fully cooked and browned. Garnish with chives or green onions and serve. Servings: 12

»» 10 large eggs »» ¼ cup milk »» ¼ teaspoon kosher or sea salt, or to taste »» ¼ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper, or to taste »» 2 tablespoons butter, divided »» 3 cups fresh spinach leaves, tough stems removed »» 4 ounces goat cheese, crumbled »» (optional) serve with toast, fresh tomatoes or fresh fruit Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees F. In large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt and black pepper. Heat a 10” cast iron or oven proof skillet on medium-high heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter, then add spinach leaves. Pilar Cata

Founder of "Damas del Doral" and "Youth of Doral". BY DANIELA GIAMPAPA-BENDAYÁN

ROLE MODEL OF ALTRUISM Mrs. Pilar Cata has been an active community leader since well before becoming a resident of the City of Doral. In 2014, this charming, Hispanic woman founded "Damas del Doral", a non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of families and children living at the Ronald McDonald House. Shortly after, in 2015, she founded "Youth of Doral" with the collaboration of young community leaders. On a monthly basis, these organizations provide families nutritious, homemade meals, cooked freshly at the Ronald McDonald House kitchen, that include curry chicken, baked salmon, chicken-and-spinach empanadas, sauteed vegetables, salmon, baked mahimahi, meat with potatoes and yucca, and desserts.

The City of Doral has awarded "Damas del Doral" welldeserved accolades for the exemplary service that the organization provides to the community. Notable among the honors is the proclamation of December 3rd, 2015 as "Damas del Doral Day" by then Mayor Luigi Boria. “I really don't know if I deserve this mention as a philanthropist; the labor we do is gratifying in itself. We are a team; it's not just me. When we cook, we are a group of people” Mrs. Cata said. For more information about Mrs. Pilar Cata activity contact (786) 202.0776 or dd@cata-mail.com, mpilar@ cata-mail.com.

Her collective efforts include a special collaboration with community organizer and motivational speaker Luz Rosenfeld, also a Doral resident, to provide support, generate advocacy, and promote the interests of the blind, orphan, and battered women in the community by collecting toys, donations, and other supplies. She also has collaborated with the John I. Smith K-8 Center and contributed to the “Back to School” campaign organized by the Children's Home Society of Florida to collect school supplies.

Engineering the Perfect

Smile

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

D

R. ENRIQUE GALLO’S PASSION FOR CREATING beautiful smiles is built on more than just dentistry… it starts with mechanics. The American-trained and Nicaraguan-born founder of Doral Center for Orthodontics actually calls on a background in engineering in his everyday work, making magic on patient smiles. “The mechanics of tooth movement is something I work with every single day,” says Dr. Gallo. “Not every orthodontist has the ability to see and apply the mechanics, but because I’m an engineer I have a different insight. I’m able to see the physics and mechanics involved and apply that to my patients.” After emigrating to the United States as a teen and graduating high school in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Dr. Gallo studied civil engineering and biology at the University of Nevada before working as a structural engineer in Reno and Washington DC. Eventually, his pull toward dentistry led him to return to school after three years in the field as a civil engineer. “I had always wanted to pursue dentistry, but I didn’t do it because of the amount of schooling and the expenses involved,” says Dr. Gallo. “But my wife gave me her full support, so I was able to quit work and return to school.” It was during his years at the University of Maryland Dental School that he saw firsthand how his engineering studies could impact his new career. “While I was studying dentistry, I encountered orthodontics, and orthodontics is basically applying mechanical forces to teeth to create beautiful smiles,” says Dr. Gallo. “My strong foundation in engineering allowed me to easily understand the mechanics of tooth movement.” Dr. Gallo His new path also led him to a new city, when he and his wife Dr. Mayling Molina came to Miami as dental residents in 2002. They fell in love with the city and decided to make Florida their new home. “[The residency] was our first time ever in Miami and we loved it,” says Dr. Gallo. “We loved the weather, the international flavor and the fact that it is such a Latin American melting pot.” Dr. Gallo finally set up shop in Doral in 2007, choosing the up and coming city because of the families

settling there and the fact that there in the area was no orthodontic office. “From day one the Doral community gave us its full support,” he says. “We were the first orthodontic clinic in Doral, and we’ve seen the city continue to grow since then. It’s a great place to be. We have a lot of happy patients and have created more than 6,000 beautiful smiles.” It is those smiles that have continued to inspire Dr. Gallo. “I love to see the changes in people’s smiles and faces,” he says. “Patients come in and they cover

their mouth when they smile, but after a few months of treatment their personality is transformed… they improve their self-esteem.” Dr. Gallo says this change impacts not only their mouths, but also their entire lives. “When we remove braces and see the changes it makes us feel good. We have patients walking out with beautiful smiles that we created. It affects their interpersonal relationships, their jobs, their whole life.”

In addition to their traditional orthodontic patients, the team at Doral Center for Orthodontics provides free and reduced treatments to patients with severe craniofacial abnormalities and deformities. (“Most of these families go through so many surgeries,” explains the doctor.) They offer similar financing options for military families. Dr. Gallo also dedicates both time and money to dental projects in the Dominican Republic that provide dental care in underserved areas. Dr. Gallo’s passion for patient care extends beyond finances. He says he is most proud of his and his team’s relationship with patients and their dedication to providing the highest quality of care and service. “Patients have access to me 24/7; they even have my cell phone number,” he says. “Most of my patients end up becoming my friends. That’s our main goal and focus. We want to offer superb customer service as we do our job and create gorgeous smiles. Our passion is helping people.” The Doral Center for Orthodontics is located at 10830 NW 58th St., Doral, FL (in the Sedano’s Shopping Center). The office can be reached at 786-845-0800. The Miami Center for Orthodontics is located at 14660 SW 16th St., Miami, FL (in the Publix Shopping Center). The office can be reached 305-223-0110.
