FFECTING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 20 TO 45 PERCENT OF MIDDLE-AGED AND elderly women (according to the North American Menopause Society), vaginal atrophy may be the least talked about, yet most common, problem for women of a certain age. Now there is a solution! The Mona Lisa Touch is an FDA-approved medical laser available for use in the U.S., replacing past treatment options such as hormone therapies, which are often laden with side effects or contraindications. So what is the Mona Lisa Touch and how does it work? Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS VAGINAL ATROPHY AND WHAT CAUSES IT?
Vaginal atrophy is a condition often coinciding with menopause in which the vaginal walls thin and dry out, creating issues with urinary functions, dryness and tightening as well as pain during sexual intercourse. Though often painful and frustrating for sufferers, few women ask for help –or know it exists.
with patients able to resume sexual intercourse after about 48 hours. After the three treatments, some patients may return for annual maintenance. HOW FAST WILL PATIENTS FEEL THE RESULTS?
Many patients experience symptom relief after just one treatment and almost all feel a difference after the second.
HOW DOES THE MONA LISA TOUCH WORK?
IS IT SAFE?
WHAT DOES THE PROCEDURE ENTAIL?
HOW CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION?
The medical laser works similar to other laser treatments, counteracting the atrophy by stimulating collagen production inside the vagina rather than altering hormone levels; essentially rehydrating, reviving dead skin and improving the condition of the vaginal walls. Patients will receive three treatments spaced about six weeks apart. Each procedure takes only a few minutes to perform. The procedure is done in-office (patients feel only a small vibration) and requires no anesthesia or painkiller,
A multisite study was conducted by two leading Urogynecologists who are experts in the field of postmenopausal gynecologic health; and recent results from a trial on postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors showed positive results and high patient satisfaction. For more information and to see if you are a candidate for the Mona Lisa Touch, contact Ana Bueno, R.N. at South Miami Women’s Health / Drs. Phillips, Miller, Roca and Venditto at 305.665.9644

AY FLOWERS ARE BLOOMING ACROSS South Florida this month, bringing with them the end of school, the beginning of the rainy season and, thankfully, a time to sit back and slow down. This month we celebrate the beauty of our city with our annual Staycation guide—the best of what’s available to us here in South Florida sans planes, trains, checked bags and 4-hour road trips. From Miami Beach to the Gulf Coast, we’ve got you covered. We also take a closer look at the trend of home vacation rentals and give you some solid advice on how to choose the right home and what to look for in an owner or property manager. Elsewhere we connect with our friends at Cutler Bay Solar Solutions, who specialize in helping South Floridians manage their electric bills by offering up solar options for everything from pool heater to whole home installations. We also spoke with Miss Florida Teen USA Victoria Disorbo about not only her upcoming pageant pressures but her dedication to a cause close to her heart and her desire to keep a close friend’s memory alive through her own perseverance. We celebrate the incredible achievements of our local schools and community leaders in Community Call and find inspiration in the story of two best friends who gave the ultimate gift of life to their loved ones. Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find us online at TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,
Dan Bastien Dan Bastien President/Publisher

JUNIE B JONES: THE MUSICAL
One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works “The King and I” boasts a score which features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. arshtcenter.org

It's Junie B.'s first day of first grade and things have already gotten off to a topsy-turvy start. For starters, Junie's friend Lucille doesn't want to be her best pal anymore and, to make matters worse, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard, causing her teacher Mr. Scary to think she may need glasses. Throw in a kickball tournament and a "Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal," and first grade has never been more exciting. S A FORMER REPORTER AND CURRENT COMmunications consultant, J.P. Hervis is used to delivering messages to the public. The Pinecrest native (and Boca Raton resident) has brought his skills to everyone from WSVN to private companies, but now he’s delivering a much more personal message that has roots in his own experiences. In February, Hervis donated a kidney to his mother, Olga, just three months after his close friend Allen Buckhalt donated one of his own kidneys to his brotherin-law, The Haggard Law Firm Managing Partner Mike Haggard. Buckhalt and Hervis have been friends for more than20 years, both graduating from Miami Palmetto Senior High School and attending the University of Florida together. “I want people to realize how far medicine has come and how safe it can be to be a living donor,” says Hervis. For Hervis the journey began when his mother (“My hero,” he says.) began having kidney issues, eventually resulting in the need for a kidney transplant. When the first donor fell through as a result of medical issues, Hervis was tested and was found to be a match. Though his mother was hesitant to accept the donation at first, Hervis persisted. “I was the last one to be tested because I have three children under the age of four and my mother was concerned about the surgery,” says Hervis. “I told her that I can’t preach the importance of fam-

ily to my own children if I don’t take action myself.” As the surgery approached, Hervis found advice and support in Buckhalt and Haggard, who were coming off of their own experience. “Allen and I have known each other since we were 15 and Mike has been a friend and a client,” he says. “Allen counseled me through a lot of it.” Buckhalt, for his part, was happy to be a part of the process. “When I found out JP was donating to his mom, I wanted to help in anyway I could,” he says. “We are like brothers and the love and respect we had for each other was even more evident during this time.” For Buckhalt it was his brother-in-law’s Polycystic Kidney Disease that caused the need for a transplant. He says the most difficult aspect of the process was concern that something prevent him from making the life-saving donation. “My biggest fear (and probably

the scariest of my life) was being physically unable to donate and help my brother,” says Buckhalt. “I wanted Mike to be rid of this dark cloud hanging over him and to start a new chapter in his life.” Today all four are doing well, and Hervis (who had never had surgery before the donation) says he was out of the hospital within 48 hours and walking around immediately. His mom Olga, too, is recovering nicely and enjoying a life free of dialysis. “ “It’s a really safe process. Being an organ donor sounds like a big deal, but doctors won’t let you donate unless they believe you can make it through the surgery and live a normal life” says Hervis. Haggard, too, was back to work at his Coral Gables Law Firm in just a few weeks and is hosting his 7th Annual Kidney Casino for a Cure on May 5th at the Coral Gables Museum. The event raises money for the PKD Foundation. The focus of this year's event will be on educating others about living kidney donations. “We need to spread the word that when you hear “perfect match” there is no such thing.” The two families, bonded by a life changing experience and two decades old friendship, now share a mission to help spread the word about donations. “One of the amazing numbers I learned, is that there are about 20,000 kidney donations a year and only about 5,000 are live kidney donation “ says Hervis, who explains the average wait time for a kidney is three-to-five years. “We shouldn’t have so many people on the list. Most people only need one kidney. Kidney disease is a killer we as a society can be rid of.”

Gulliver Senior Awarded President's Volunteer Service Award
G
ULLIVER SENIOR ALESSANDRA MAGGIONI HAS BEEN awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award for her exemplary volunteer work. The award was presented to her in a ceremony held at the Gulliver Preparatory campus. The award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. The school nominated Maggioni for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service with Nicklaus Children's Hospital. Alessandra became an ambassador for the Hospital and now attends hospital fundraisers, where she speaks publicly about her journey to raise funds benefitting children with scoliosis. Last year, at the hospital's annual Wine, Women and Shoes fashion event, she helped raise more than $1 million. At other events, such as the Flying with the Stars charity dinner, she helped raise $40,000. Among her many achievements and philanthropic initiatives, Alessandra makes it a priority to meet and mentor children and their families who have learned they Alessandra Maggioni must undergo fusion surgery. "The spirit of this award, and Alessandra's hard work, speak directly to Gulliver's commitment to leadership through service. Her contributions to the community are a perfect illustration of what it means to live with integrity and responsibility," said Head of Schools, Frank Steel. "Alessandra is an exemplary student, role model for her peers, and ambassador for Gulliver." Alessandra was 10 years old when she was diagnosed with a severe case of scoliosis,
halting her dream of becoming a professional tennis player. Four years after her diagnosis, she underwent an intensive surgery called posterior spinal fusion, where her back was reconstructed with two metal rods and 26 screws. While her movement is limited in terms of sports, she is able to continue a healthy lifestyle and be physically active. "Not being able to play tennis was devastating to my parents and me, so I decided to dedicate my life to help others instead," said Alessandra, a 2017 Silver Knight awards nominee. "My surgery has truly been a blessing in disguise." In 2015, with support from her engineering teacher at Gulliver, she created a patent-pending device for patients in pain after fusion surgery. She also speaks regularly about her journey at conferences and seminars, and delivered a TEDx Talk titled Bent, Not Broken. Receiving this award has inspired Alessandra to expand her volunteer work even further. "Winning this award gives me more fuel to continue helping others and to expand my work, for example with the orphanage my family and I are opening in the Dominican Republic," said Alessandra. "Doing my volunteer work has never been something that I do for recognition - it's always about helping others - but to see that it does get recognized, and to see the difference I'm making in people's lives, it really inspires me to keep moving forward even through the hard times." Gulliver students Alaz Sengul '17 and Kelly Ann Cosentino '19 were also recognized by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program during today's ceremony, each receiving a Certificate of Merit for their service to the community.

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Victoria Disorbo
A Friend’s Mission CYSTIC FIBROSIS RESEARCH AND AWARENESS
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND:
Disorbo, 19, is the reigning Miss Florida Teen USA and will represent the state at the Miss Teen USA pageant this summer, but the Lynn University sophomore will take the stage with much more on her mind than evening gowns. Though she had performed as an actress and singer, and even placed in the top 16 in the Miss Florida Teen USA pageant in 2015, the loss of her friend in early 2016 pushed her to take a break from the stage. “I thought I would never compete again,” says Disorbo. “But then one night at 3 a.m. I texted my pageant coach and said I wanted to get back to work. I realized pageantry was a way for me to help others with cystic fibrosis by raising awareness and money to find a cure. When I’m on stage I think: You’re doing this for Julie and for every other cystic fibrosis patient out there.”
DRAWING ON INSPIRATION
Disorbo’s friend continues to be source of inspiration in her daily life as Miss Teen Florida USA, pushing her to find new ways to educate the public about the disease, which causes the cells that make mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids to become thick and glue-like, blocking tubes and ducts throughout the body. Over time, mucus builds up inside the airways making breathing a struggle. The mucus also traps germs and can lead to serious infections and severe lung damage. “Looking at Julie, you would never know she was sick,” says Disorbo. “She even wore heels in the hospital! She was always laughing, even when undergoing painful treatments. No matter how sick she was she always had a smile on her face. She never felt sorry for herself... I learned so much from her.”
65 ROSES
Another way Disorbo is raising awareness is as an author. Her first book, “Sixty Five Roses,” will be published at the end of May… which happens to be Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. The book is aimed at children, an audience she knew she could have a real impact on. The book chronicles the creative ways children with the disease and their friends can look at its treatments and effects. “If you teach children to appreciate every moment and live everyday as if it were their last then they will carry that through their entire life,” she says. Part of the proceeds from the book (available on victoriadisorbo.com at the end of the month) will be donated to organizations that further research and education on the disease.
Julie lived a very good life while she was here and contributed so much to the world and to me. I feel like it’s my calling to ensure her legacy lives on.” 18

PAGEANT PREP
In addition to her duties as Miss Florida Teen USA and her upcoming book release, Disorbo is busy prepping for the Miss Teen USA pageant… and the opportunity to make a national voice for herself and her friend. “I am preparing very rigorously, not just in the gym but mentally and emotionally,” she says. “ I am not just competing for a shiny crown, I'm competing for a voice and an opportunity to impact my community and carry on my best friend's legacy.”

MAYOR OF PINECREST
or many years Pinecrest has been a leader in municipal sustainability initiatives, and as such has garnered recognition both locally and nationally. Most recently, our Village was featured in the book by former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg and Carl Pope titled: Climate of Hope for our forward-thinking efforts in fighting climate change. We are especially proud that our former Mayor Cindy Lerner was quoted. She has worked very hard on this subject. With this in mind, I am proud to announce that we now have internationally known environmental artist Xavier Cortada as an artist in residence at Pinecrest Gardens. His first exhibition at Pinecrest Gardens was Seahorses, which launched a county-wide initiative titled Seahorses: Magical Creatures in Our Backyard, to build awareness about seahorses and other syngnathids in South Florida and Biscayne National Park. Xavier will work out of the historic Whilden-Carrier Cottage at Pinecrest Gardens and will play an integral part in environmental community and education outreach through art projects and programs in partnership with Pinecrest Gardens. Xavier is from Miami and has created environmental installations in the North and South poles, eco-art projects in Taiwan, Hawaii and Holland, and community murals addressing peace, child welfare, AIDS and juvenile justice concerns worldwide. He has also developed multi-year participatory eco-art efforts to reforest mangroves, native trees and wildflowers across Florida. This promises to be a rewarding cultural experience for all.

MAYOR OF PALMETTO BAY
ay is month of critical importance – our military, our teachers and our mothers. I am proud to sponsor and place on the May agenda for council approval several items relating to appreciation for those who are so important for our way of life, our teachers (recognizing Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8 - 12) The spouses of our men and women who serve our Country (Military Souse Appreciation Day, Friday, May 12, 2017) and of course, Mother’s Day. Please note that I expect that other council members will have moved to cosponsor these items as well! May is also the month where we recognize and observe Memorial Day – a solemn day of remembrance for those who gave their lives for our country, and serves to remind people of the costly price of war. There are many formal ceremonies that take place in observance, including here in Palmetto Bay – occurring at the Marlin Moore American Legion Post 133. Our Village council is appreciative of our veterans. Sunday, August 7, 2016, was a special day in Palmetto Bay as we became a recognized “Purple Heart City.” So thank you to our mothers, our teachers, our military spouses and please do not forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our County. God Bless you all – we do remember and appreciate what all of you do and have done in for us here in Palmetto Bay. Please keep up with all the events, meetings and ongoing public works projects going on in our village through the official village website: www.palmettobay-fl.gov. I also keep up on issues through my blog found at www.eugeneflinn. com. My direct e-mail is eflinn@palmettobay-fl.gov.

Everything you ever wanted to know about solar energy but were afraid to ask
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
ROM SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOF TO A SOLAR pool heater, making homes more energy efficient seems easier than ever these days. So why is it still such a mystery to so many? “At this point, the cost of solar has come down so much that it’s usually lower than what homeowners are paying,” says Raul Vergara, owner of Cutler Bay Solar Solutions. “I compare it to renting electricity versus buying electricity. With solar, homeowners own their own electricity.” Vergara should know, his company is the largest solar installer in the tri-county area and is responsible for the largest decrease in carbon emissions our area has seen in decades. We sat down with Vergara to look at the pros, the cons and the what, where and how of energy efficiency and to sort through the myriad of questions that come with making a change.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR CUTLER BAY SOLAR SOLUTIONS? Pretty much anyone, says Vergara. But more specifically, “Somebody who is using too much energy and they’re not sure how they’re using it… but they want to save money.” To that end Vergara and his team look over potential clients’ electric bills to see what typical energy consumption is and start from there.
WHAT PARTS OF THE HOME DOES THE COMPANY LOOK AT? For Vergara it generally comes down to four parts- the air conditioning, the water heater, the lighting and pool pumps. “If it’s something that’s on or running for a significant amount of time then we want to look at it,” he says.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY HOME IS A CANDIDATE FOR SOLAR ENERGY? Though it’s optimum to be facing south, 80 percent of South Florida homes are suitable for solar potential according to Vergara. The 20 percent that are not can sometimes come down to shading issues or roof types. Condos as well, may not have roof space for solar panels. For the majority however, the panels can even increase the value of a home. “Consumers are more savvy, they understand the value of solar,” says Vergara.
WHAT’S A GOOD PLACE TO START? Vergara says look to your water heater. “An electric water heater is on 24 hours a day,” he says. “That’s a lot of electricity. It’s a very easy, low-cost swap to go solar.”
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT SOLAR ENERGY? Though Vergara says consumers are more and more educated about solar energy, there is still a misconception that panels are just for the wealthy.

Raul Vergara, Owner, Cutler Bay Solar Solutions.
“Solar has now become affordable for everyone,” he says. Programs such as Ygrene can help homeowners take away the worry of up-front cost. “You can stop writing the check to FPL,” Vergara says. “The money is staying in your house.”
WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP? Vergara and his team will come to potential clients’ homes to do an assessment, eventually giving owners what he calls a “roadmap” to energy efficiency. “We look at where can we mount panels, how many, what can we reduce,” he says. “We can take care of the process and help them on their way to energy independence.” To learn more about Cutler Bay Solar Solutions, please visit cutlerbaysolarsolutions.com or call them at 305-280-0638.

Eat Your Water and Sunscreen BY HOWARD MURAD, M.D., F.A.A.D.
A
GING CAN’T BE PREVENTED, BUT IT CAN BE SLOWED. THE BEST WAY TO STAVE OFF aging is through the use of sun protection, but not just through lotions and sprays. We can eat our way to healthier, stronger and younger skin if we simply eat our water and sunscreen. I know that sounds funny, but if we feed the body powerful nutrients, in the form of juicy fruits and vegetables, skin can be repaired, protected and fortified to slow the aging process, at the cellular level. Juicy foods offer cells the much-needed hydration they require for basic everyday functioning as well as vital nutrients needed for repair and fortification. In other words, it is far more hydrating to eat a piece of fruit than drink water, and certain nutrients in fruits and vegetables pack a punch when it comes to fighting sun damage, as they work to boost your SPF, systemically. In sunny South Florida, almost one in four people will get skin cancer. Knowing this, Miami residents should eat low acid, more alkaline or anti-inflammatory foods such as those stocked with polyphenols, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which offer the highest amount of skin protection. This includes most fruits, vegetables and edible plants such as cucumber, citrus, berries, broccoli, avocado and even red wine.
properties, isothiocyanates, which contain sulforaphane, stop cancer from spreading and induce cancer cell death as they work inside the cell to boost enzymatic activity that prevents oxidation. Sulfur is found in every living cell in the body and it plays a key role in collagen synthesis.
Avocado: Avocados, 70 percent to 80 percent water, are moderately alkaline. The fats in avocado are known to reduce cholesterol levels and are also cytoprotective. The oils in avocado improve the absorption of antioxidants. The carotenoids and phytosterols in avocado provide anti-inflammatory benefits.
Cucumber: One of the most alkaline vegetables. Cucumbers contain silica, a trace mineral that contributes to the strength of connective tissue, which prevents skin sagging, and fights cellulite. Cucumber skin is a good source of vitamins A, C and folic acid. Eating a three-ounce cucumber is almost like drinking three ounces of water because the water content in a cucumber is about 96 percent.
Citrus: Lemons and limes are the most alkalineforming citrus fruits. All citrus contain high levels of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, folate and potassium. Most citrus fruits are about 87 percent water. Vitamin C removes free radicals from the cell structures composed primarily of water and from areas containing body fluids. Folate reduces the risk of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Potassium helps move nutrients into cells.

Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, cherries, and pomegranates (about 80 to 92 percent water content) contain high levels of polyphenols and offer positive and preventive effects on cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke and inflammation. Most berries are moderately acidic, but contain strong anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids, a kind of polyphenol found in berries, help regulate nitric oxide, a free radical that regulates blood flow, and protects against blood clots and oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Systemically, flavonoids have shown to lower blood pressure. The strongest polyphenol is ellagic acid, with high levels found in raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates.
Red wine: Resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine, has been linked to a lowered risk of heart disease and is a sirtuin (anti-aging) stimulator. Early studies show that red wine’s properties may help prevent cancer in both chemically and UVB-induced skin cancer. Howard Murad, M.D., F.A.A.D., is recognized as a leading visionary for his scientific innovations, total body approach to youth building and overall wellness. His mission and passion is to help people unlock their potential to look younger, to feel younger and to live healthier, happier and more rewarding lives.
Broccoli: Broccoli, 91 percent water, is full of isothiocyanates, sulfur-containing phytochemicals, and is highly alkaline. Known for their anti-carcinogenic

School’s Out for the SUMMER: A Perfect Time for Music BY PENNY DANIELS
S
CHOOL IS OUT. TIME FOR FUN, SWIMMING ON THE BEACH WITH FRIENDS, vacations with your family. No homework. No waking up early to go to school. The opportunities are many: sports, music, art, academics, volunteer work, and part-time jobs. In the summer, you hear all types of music … at parades, at concerts, at the fireworks, or relaxing at home. Would you like to learn music or become a more experienced musician? Summer is less scheduled and therefore, there’s more time to learn a musical instrument, take music lessons and practice, practice, practice. You are never too old to start learning a musical instrument. And by starting your children playing instruments as young as four, you are helping them learn a technique and skill that will last a lifetime. As parents, we want our children to be well rounded and oftentimes schedule them for many activities after school … softball, baseball, soccer, swim lessons, t-ball, hockey, dance, volleyball, golf. Why not music lessons this summer? Taking the summer off from practicing your musical instrument is practically guaranteed to set you back. It is difficult to maintain your level of confidence when you don’t continue your regular practice routine. Instead of taking time off during the summer, take advantage of the extra time by focusing on developing improved practice habits that can take you to your next musical plateau. Summer can be a great time to build new musical skills and knowledge by doing the following:

WITH DR. VICTORIA ROTHMAN, ORTHODONTIST
BY DR. VICTORIA ROTHMAN, ORTHODONIST
I
T’S NEVER TOO LATE TO MOVE HEALTHY TEETH! YES, I’M speaking to all of you adults out there who may be under the common misconception that orthodontics is for children or adolescents only. Nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, a recent study shows that adults are seeking orthodontic treatment in record numbers, up 16 percent from 2012 to 2104 alone. And the latest estimate from the American Association of Orthodontists is that 27 percent of orthodontic patients are adults (more than one in four)! So why the recent increase in adult orthodontics? Many adults now understand the multiple benefits of having a healthy, beautiful smile. We all want to look our best, and dental esthetics is now an important part of the overall beauty package. Even celebrities constantly in the public eye, such as Tom Cruise, Gwen Stefani, and Beyoncé, have opted for braces as adults. Today’s innovative technologies allow for highly esthetic orthodontic options, such as clear (ceramic) braces, and lingual braces, which are braces that are placed on the back of the teeth (by the tongue and palate) and hence entirely invisible. Another option for many adult patients is InvisalignÒ, is which is a series of custom made aligners that gradually move teeth the way braces do. Aside from being highly aesthetic, these various options are also considerably comfortable, as technology has advanced with patient comfort in mind. Aside from esthetics, an even more important factor driving the increase in adult orthodontics is dental health. A common issue such as excessive crowding of teeth can lead to difficulty in cleaning and maintaining them, which can ultimately result in problems such as tooth decay and periodontal disease (gum problems). Other issues such as excessive spacing, misalignment, or bite problems can lead to uneven wear over time potentially causing weak or compromised teeth or even difficulty chewing. Orthodontics may also be necessary to move teeth into their proper positions before restorative dentistry is done (such as dental implants, crowns, or bridges). Many adults find that their teeth begin to shift later in life. I often see patients in their late teens or early twenties who are experiencing a shifting of their teeth, or adults who tell me that their teeth were always straight but recently began moving. I remind patients that every part of our body shifts and changes with age, and our teeth are no exception. I also frequently see many adult patients for orthodontic treatments, such as a patient who may have had braces as a child and was not so diligent with their retainers, or who did not fully complete their treatment the first time around. Fortunately adult orthodontics can remedy these situations. If you are considering orthodontics as an adult, there are a few important factors to keep in mind. These include the importance of starting treatment with a healthy mouth, which means being cleared by your general dentist as free from cavities or gum disease. It is also important to maintain regular visits with your general dentist during orthodontic treatment, ideally every 3-4 months for cleanings and checkups. Additionally, adult teeth typically move somewhat slower than those of children since the benefit of growth is not present. However, there are no age limitations to doing orthodontic treatment… teeth will move at any age. I have treated a number of patients in their late 60s with braces with great success! The benefits of orthodontics in adults are numerous. A healthy, beautiful smile lends itself to increased self-confidence and subsequent improved social and professional success. It is an investment for a lifetime, no matter what age the treatment begins! Please call Pinecrest Orthodontics for a complimentary initial orthodontic consultation! Pinecrest Orthodontics is located in the Dixie Belle Shops at 12197 S. Dixie Highway in Pinecrest, FL. PH: 305-423-4130. pinecrestortho.com.

OVING YOUR BODY DAILY, EVEN FOR SHORT DURATIONS, IS ONE OF the most important habits one can create in order to maintain good health. Truthfully, every time you workout doesn’t have to be an ultra-intense test of will…or, shall we say, an “exercise” in torture. Especially for those short on time, brief periods of physical activity throughout the day are the ideal supplement to the occasional high-intensity workouts. Everyone should make time to keep fit, but for those days when you just can’t seem to squeeze in an extended fitness routine, it’s essential that you don’t allow yourself to become completely inactive. In the past year alone, the number of completely sedentary Americans dropped from 28.3 percent to 27.6 percent according to survey results from the Physical Activity Council. Frankly, this number is still far too high and that’s not the only concern. The American Heart Association reported that since 1950 the number of sedentary jobs has increased 83 percent. In addition, the average work week has been extended and requires more focus and energy as compared to years past. Between work, family, and everything else life throws at us, our “free time” is seemingly occupied with more “stuff” than ever; yet we are disturbingly becoming more sedentary than ever. In times like this we could all use some guidance on how to find ways to squeeze in physical activity. So here are a few relatively simple ways to fit more exercise into your schedule.
Multi-task Whether going for a workout at the gym or power-walking around the neighborhood, chances are there is a way you can check off a few tasks from your to-do list at the same time. Many gym-goers catch up on the news on TV or listen to an audio book or a podcast while on the treadmill. Maybe even compile your grocery shopping list while sweating away on that elliptical? If you’re opting for the neighborhood power-walk (one of the least utilized and most underrated forms of exercise), one of the many benefits is how easy it is to multi-task. You can make phone calls, bring the dog along, or even squeeze in some in-person socializing with a workout buddy.
Take the stairs If you are presented with the option and there are a reasonable number of flights to climb, always opt for the stairs over an elevator. Just be cautious…some offices have stairwells with security locks on the doors! It may sound a bit impractical but parking on an upper level of a parking garage and then running the stairs is another quick, effective way to squeeze in some exercise - all while increasing your energy (really!). For example, a typical man weighing 185 pounds will burn approximately 180 calories just by climbing stairs for 20 minutes. Similarly just a few minutes of stair-climbing each day will make you heart-healthy in no time.
Do jumping jacks As mentioned, it’s important not to discount the simple and/or quickest of workouts. Basic exercises such as jumping jacks or dreaded burpees are always a great go-to since you can perform them almost anywhere. If you are able to get in a few quick bursts several times throughout the day these “base” exercises can add up to a pretty decent workout. Just pick a few favorite compound moves to keep in your “tool box” so that when you have a few free minutes you’ll know exactly how to give your body the boost it needs. Which House Will Mom Make Our Home?
LD SO
BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
I
N REAL ESTATE, MOM IS OFTEN THE DECISION MAKER AND dad is the influencer. There is the occasional time where the roles switch and mom is the influencer. This is an opinion based on the transactions I’ve been privy to. Drawing from personal experience while interacting with moms it’s usually because mom takes all the interests of the family into consideration when making the decision. This will include the geographical radius in which the main activities take place, including locations of schools, work, extra-curricular activities and distance to the places of business and worship that the family frequents. Another key component is that the house has the adequate number of rooms for sleep, play and entertainment for kids and adults, alike. Here, in paradise on earth, that will also mean deciding on a pool and the size of the backyard/playground. Dad, in the role of influencer tends to have a definite say so and is key in agreeing to the decision made by mom. Recently I met a grandmother who was a big part of the decision, because of experience and financial support of the purchase. The parameters were very much the same as we find with most moms, with perhaps much more detail. She wanted to know about the nearby schools and the education methodology of each, the distance to the various parks and what each park offers in the way of activities and programs, the proximity to the temple and alternative routes, the specific structure of the house and the work which has been done since it was built in the late 1960s, the names of contractors for various services and how long they have been in business…well you get the point. An experienced mom looking to answer those questions which will inevitably come up for her son and his family once they move in. Once her questions were answered to her satisfaction she approved the purchase. Mom’s role in selecting the home for the family transcends any cultural, religious, or ethnic influence. There are occasional times where the roles switch and mom is the influencer and dad decides on which house to make the family’s home. Dads are keen on checking all the boxes listed above with a key check mark going in the box that gets mom’s buy-in, even if in a subtle way. I’ve seen this with type A personalities, who are driven to make the decision in a tight time frame and within the requirements pre-established. Usually, during a move from another city or country and with competing priorities outside the home. After all, the adage can go something like “happy mom, happy home,” right? It is my experience that “mom” is the result of many other moms contributing to her being how “mom” is. I’ve watched three generations of moms that include mi abuela, mi mami and my sister. I’ve also witnessed the same with my wife’s family Grandma Daisy, my kids’ Grandma Jean and Liede (mom to our kids). They each made houses into loving homes, thankfully. The greatest beneficiaries of these wonderful women are our kids who have seen six examples of moms and the current best version of mom that Liede and my sister can be. The future is in great hands, if it be that one day our daughter is blessed with being a mom, and our daughters-in-law are blessed with the same privilege. They will each have at least six spectacular moms to draw from. Happy Mother’s Day. Feliz Dia de las Madres. Thank you for all that you do for the kids and the community.

Vision and Learning BY DR. LIANNE PINO
I
N SCHOOL, 75 TO 90 PERCENT OF WHAT WE LEARN INVOLVES our visual system. About 25 percent of students struggle with their visual skills such as eye teaming, eye focusing, eye tracking and visual information processing. In the technological world that we live in now there is a high demand for us to use our visual skills. In addition, children and adults diagnosed with learning disabilities often, about 75 percent, have deficiencies with their visual skills. Vision is one of the most complex processes used in learning, therefore it is very important to have a comprehensive eye exam every year and, if there are symptoms and/or signs of visual skill deficits, seek further evaluation by a developmental optometrist. People with learning related visual problems have to be assessed for more than just their refractive error (ex. nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism) and their ocular health. There are 3 related areas in the visual functions. 1. Visual acuity, refraction and ocular health. This is evaluated in a comprehensive eye exam. 2. Visual efficiency. A person's eye teaming, eye focusing and eye tracking skills. This is usually evaluated in a visual efficiency exam (VEE) by a developmental optometrist. 3. Visual information processing. This is the cognitive aspect of our visual skills. Some of these skills are figure-ground, spatial awareness, visual memory and visual-motor integration. These are evaluated in a visual perception evaluation (VEP) by a developmental optometrist. At Exceptional Vision Therapy and Learning Center (EVTLC) we provide developmental eye exams that evaluate both a person’s visual efficiency and visual information skills. We can also perform comprehensive eye exam next door at Exceptional Vision. Our goal at EVTLC is to alleviate the symptoms and signs so a person can concentrate on learning and not the visual discomfort they are experiencing. We can help alleviate these symptoms by using lenses, prisms and/or vision therapy. With these tools we focus on improving and remediating a person’s visual efficiency and visual information processing. Often you see people with reading difficulties have co-existing visual and language processing deficits. The best way to approach these deficiencies is in a multi-disciplinary approach to address their needs. Children who exhibit visual skill deficiencies begin to have problems when they begin school. They may have reading, mathematics, writing, spelling, comprehension, sports, playground and/or social difficulties. Unresolved visual deficiencies can cause people an inability to respond fully to their educational needs. These are a few of the signs and symptoms you may see when someone has a visual skill deficit: Complains of blurred vision; Rubs eyes frequently; Squints; Closes or covers one eye; Occasionally sees double; Able to read for only a short time; Poor reading comprehension or Eye coordination problems. Numerous research and studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of vision therapy. Vision therapy is not only for children, adults can also benefit from vision therapy. You don’t “outgrow” visual skill deficiencies. Often time’s people are labeled dyslexic or attention deficit before having their visual skills evaluated for a possible contributing factor to their learning disability. Post-traumatic brain injury patients can also exhibit these visual skill deficiencies. These deficits can be remediated with vision therapy to aid people overcome and best manage these learning disabilities. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptom/signs it is important that you get evaluated by an eye care professional, such as a developmental optometrist like Dr. Lianne Pino. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of vision therapy please contact our office for a free consultation with Dr. Lianne Pino at 786-886-7346. You can also learn more at www.evtlc.com.

IRED OF THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD OF MIAMI’S ART GALLERIES? ART BASEL too big and impersonal for you? Well, treat your senses to a place that is not too far from home and absolutely amazing. The art gallery scene in Charleston, SC awaits you. So, a girl walks into a bar (it sounds like I’m going to tell you a joke but this is really how it happened.) I was sitting at the bar at The Vendue and in walked a local artist that made every woman in the place swoon. Meet Stephen Elliott Webb. Once I found out what he did, I quickly engaged him to be my gallery tour guide so I could get an insider’s peek to all the fabulous galleries. More on Stephen later as I like to save the best for last. Stephen Elliott Webb in his studio. A few weeks later, with a very comprehensive itinerary in hand, we met to begin our walkabout; with more than 50 galleries in Charleston, I’m sure he was hard pressed to pick a handful for me to visit. So, let’s get started. The first gallery was Helena Fox Fine Art. She is a fourth generation art collector and her gallery carries 20 artists in the American representational style. Along with the works of nationally- and internationally-renowned artists, the 22K gold jewelry of Sarah Amos also calls the gallery home. Next on the list was Ann Long’s gallery where I browsed 25 artists of modern art and classical realist works. The next stop will prove very interesting for Miamians as Rebekah Jacobs has a high-end vintage photography gallery with quite a bit of Cuban inventory, which you can browse on the Internet. Definitely worth your time. The next three are my favorites. The John C. Doyle gallery houses Mr. Doyle’s works of realism and impressionism. It just so happens, Mr. Doyle and Guy Harvey (for all you Florida fans) were friends and there is one original sport fishing painting left and it is for sale at the gallery. If you can afford the price tag of $75,000, it would be one to have in your collection. Blue Cuban Seas is one of my favorites as it features Hemingway’s boat with a Marlin jumping over it. If you favor the surreal realm, than Robert Lange Studios has to be a must see. Run by a husband/wife team, all the artists have a tie to Charleston and you can actually go upstairs and see Robert work. Once I was up there, I really didn’t want to leave as I became totally transfixed at watching him. Jealousy is one word that came to mind due to the fact he made creating look so effortless. “There is no right or wrong way to be an artist,” he told me. Clearly the man has not had the privilege of seeing my “paintings.” One last stop before heading to Stephen’s studio and that was at the Principle Gallery. Walking through the front doors, I was struck with the elegance of the space and felt myself slow down in order to take in all the beautiful paintings. Frank Russen, who is the director of the gallery, recently came from Naples. Clearly it is Naples loss, as Frank has brought his extensive knowledge base, fabulous ideas and personality to the gallery to make it one not to be missed on an art walk. As I mentioned earlier, I have saved the best for last. Stephen walked me over to Mitchell Hill Gallery to show me his work and then over to his studio so I could get a first hand look at how he turns an ordinary canvas into a spectacular piece of art. I was completely amazed how he could take watercolor, latex, acrylic and oil paint along with glue, gesso, enamel, salt and soap and create something any South Beach condo would be proud to hang on its walls. “The lawlessness of abstract art is truly therapeutic. All chains are cut and the artist’s mind can run free.” And so Stephen’s words rang true for me, for as I looked at piece after piece, I swear I could feel the ocean breeze floating through open balcony doors. S WE COME UPON THE BUSY SUMMER TRAVEL SEASON, it’s important to keep in mind that travel, while fun and enlightening, can also bring about different issues of safety and liability, especially when traveling abroad. When booking travel, you should be aware of the entities involved, and how you can maximize your experiences by preparing and planning for situations that may be more challenging to handle than they would be at home.
A Law Firm Dedicated to Protecting Florida's Families
BOOKING YOUR TRIP WITH TRAVEL AGENCIES Modern day travel--with the countless websites available to assist you-- is easier and quicker when you book it yourself. However, if you book your arrangements through a travel agency you are able to obtain the expertise of a professional in the travel business. Agents can obtain good deals at little to no cost to you and may even be able to get a better rate. You also have someone who is liable and responsible for your vacation plans. Although there is no national regulating body for travel agencies you can and should rely upon word of mouth and past experiences to select an agent that best suits your needs. Travel agents can also offer you a variety of insurance coverages for your trip. The coverage ranges from emergency cancellations to a cancellation for any reason. Print a copy of any coverage that you purchase and bring it with you on your trip. Review the coverage prior to your departure and make sure that you understand the requirements for obtaining benefits.
RENTAL CARS AND LIABILITY If you use your credit card to rent a car, most credit card companies cover liability insurance for a rental car, although the terms and locations that are covered vary by the individual credit card company. Make sure you check with your credit card company prior to travel to find out what kind of insurance you may have already by learning the details and limits of the coverage, and ensure that the destination where you will rent the car is covered by your card. Print out all necessary documents and take them with you to the rental car counter. When traveling internationally, some of the terms and conditions of agreements may be more difficult to understand, and you want to make sure that you are covered in case of any situation where you may be liable for damages. Check with all of your credit card companies and even your own car insurance company before renting a car to see what kind of coverage exists and is available to you prior to renting a car.

Hotels aren’t always the perfect choice for families traveling with large groups or those who have special needs. Sites such as Homeaway, VRBO and Airbnb offer great options for renting homes or apartments that can satisfy the needs of every traveler from the budget-minded to the luxury seeker. So how to choose a rental? Here are five things to remember when browsing your options… 1. Input your dates. Rates in popular vacation areas can change almost weekly, depending on the time of year or any holidays that may fall during that time. By inputting your dates from the beginning you’ll not only getter a clearer picture of what homes will cost, but it will help narrow the field significantly based on what’s already rented during that time. By the same token- searching various combinations of days or weeks (staying a full week versus four or five days) can sometimes yield a better rate in the big picture. 2. Read the details. And that means every detail. A home that states it can sleep seven may simply be a two bedroom with some pull-out couches. Most descriptions will give a detailed and clear picture of where bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas are located as well as what types of furniture, accessories and beds are in each. It’s no fun to show up expecting a King-size bed and ending up sharing a twin with your significant other. 3. Read the reviews. Most sites will have thorough reviews from past renters, making it easy to spot the homes that are popular… and those that aren’t. Reviews can tell you a lot about the cleanliness of the house, the amenities it offers and the location. They can also usually give you helpful hints about area attractions, restaurants and shops. 4. Do your homework. Don’t rely just on reviews, especially when it comes to location. Doing a simple Google Earth search can help give you a good idea of what’s around the home and how close (or far away) neighbors are. Make sure to reach out to friends and/or family in the area to check location as well or do a quick Facebook post to get free and helpful advice from your circle of friends. 5. Get a clear contact. Whether it be the owner, a property manager or a housekeeper, be sure to know who to contact in the area with any issues or problems. Most owners or property manager's will be happy to give you a cell number as well as lists of what to bring and where to go in town.

RE ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES PAINFUL FOR A PET? WILL a pet allow the insertion of needles into the skin? Does acupuncture really work? These are a few questions that veterinary doctors trained and certified in veterinary acupuncture get all the time Even though it has been a staple of Eastern Medicine for thousands of years, it is in the last 20 years or so that acupuncture has become a mainstream modality in Veterinary Medicine. In fact, many veterinary schools today include in their curriculum introductory courses on the basics of veterinary acupuncture. Research for acupuncture in animals is strong and continually developing. Many general practitioners, board certified veterinary neurologists and anesthesiologist, are seeking the post doctoral Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture. Why? Because it works. Acupuncture is a modality within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It refers to the insertion of thin metal needles into specific sites of the body, called acupuncture points, for the treatment or prevention of diseases and pain. Acupuncture also refers to other types of stimulation of these points, such as an injection of fluid (e.g. vitamin B12), electrical stimulation, light stimulation with low level laser, or local heating with a smoldering herb called “moxibustion.” But how does it work? Acupuncture induces changes in the function of the brain that lead to changes at the level of the endocrine, autonomic, and circulatory systems. It also facilitates changes at the mental-emotional level. The analgesic effect caused by electroacupuncture, for example, is specifically mediated by the release of endorphins, serotonin and norepinephrine, and by the acupuncture’s ability to aid in muscle relaxation. Acupuncture works better for chronic problems by decreasing pain and inflammation, increasing energy levels, and reinforcing the action of the immune system. From the TCM point of view, it corrects the imbalances present in the body. It is not a cure all, but can work very well when indicated. It is very commonly used in conditions such as paresis, paralysis, musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., arthritis), skin disorders, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, epilepsy, and selective reproductive problems. Acupuncture also provides important advantages to pets with cancer including pain reduction, elimination of nausea, and improved glandular function following radiation therapy. To determine if your pet is a good candidate for acupuncture therapy, a diagnosis is always the first step. This means that the doctor requires the same historical, physical and diagnostic information that is required for a conventional veterinary treatment. Aggressive pets are not candidates for acupuncture therapy. A typical trial period for acupuncture involves an “induction stage” of two to three treatments per week for at least two weeks. Since the effects of acupuncture are cumulative in nature, the benefits of the therapy will be short lived initially (1-2 days), but will then accumulate producing longer lasting effects. Once these longer lasting effects have been reached, the frequency of the sessions are tapered down to the minimum that will maintain the beneficial effects (“maintenance” stage”). Chronic problems often require longer induction stages, and the pet may need prolonged and perhaps lifelong maintenance. There are many reasons why we may not see a response to the acupuncture therapy. Among the main reasons to consider are an incorrect diagnosis, incorrect positioning of the needles, incorrect combination of points (acupuncture prescription), incorrect depth of insertion of the needles, incorrect stimulation (manual or electrical) of the needles once inserted in the skin, or simply because the specific medical condition is non-responsive to the treatment. HEN GOING THROUGH A DIVORCE AND DEALING with the aftermath, it seems we are just on autopilot, doing what needs to be done, mindlessly walking through the days and weeks. Our daily goal is just to get from sunrise to sunset with as little frustration as possible. At the time, it appears our frustration stems from things not working out as we wanted them to but in actuality, the frustration is due to the fact we are not asking the right questions before we make a decision or take an action. In Debbie Ford’s book “The Right Questions,” she discusses the importance of asking yourself 10 questions before you say or do something. By being mindful and reflecting on these questions and consequently the answers, you will be making decisions for the right reasons which will only push you in the right direction and with less frustration. In order for things to work in your favor, you must first ask the right questions. I’m not suggesting that by asking the right questions, the decision will be easy or without fraught but at least you will not be second guessing your choices. You will enter onto your path with conviction and know that you are making this decision for all the right reasons. Moving forward, I encourage you to keep Debbie Ford’s 10 questions in the forefront of your mind. They are: 1. Will this choice propel me toward an inspiring future or will it keep me stuck in the past? 2. Will this choice bring me long-term fulfillment or will it bring me shortterm gratification? 3. Am I standing in my power or am I trying to please another? 4. Am I looking for what’s right or am I looking for what’s wrong? 5. Will this choice add to my life force or will it rob me of my energy? 6. Will I use this situation as a catalyst to grow and evolve or will I use it to beat myself up? 7. Does this choice empower me or does it disempower me? 8. Is this an act of self-love or is it an act of self-sabotage? 9. Is this an act of faith or is it an act of fear? 10. Am I choosing from my divinity or am I choosing from my humanity? Choosing to think this way is a very mindful approach to making decisions instead of being reactionary which doesn’t always lead to the best outcome. If we take the time to ask ourselves these questions, it keeps our decisions in line with what we want instead of fighting against it. It raises our consciousness level to truly realize that our choices today affect our tomorrows. “The Right Questions” by Debbie Ford is a book worth having in your personal library to read and reread until it becomes your way of life. Medical Acupuncture (Cont.) it's important to remember that acupuncture is considered a medical procedure and, by law, only a licensed Veterinarian can provide the therapy. In addition, the doctor must have been awarded the post graduate Certification in Veterinary Acupuncture by an institution recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Lastly, as with any other medical modality, the medical instrument is only as good as the trained hands using it. Seek a veterinary acupuncturist with many years of experience in acupuncture therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine for best results. Veterinary acupuncture is a safe, natural, and effective treatment alternative for pets with no adverse effects. When considering treatments for your ailing pet, you owe it to them to put acupuncture at the top of your list.
