it's Summertime!
W
ELCOME TO SUMMER! THE SEASON OF BBQs, pool parties, sunscreen and, yes, mosquitos. Those pesky insects can cause more stress for South Floridians than heatstroke and Hurricanes combined. That’s why we’re so excited to feature Mosquito Joe on our June cover. Owners Yoel Gutierrez and Omar Sanchez have dedicated their careers to making yards (and other spaces) family-friendly and free of mosquitoes, using everything from barrier sprays to misting systems to help us spend our summers bite-free. Check out our cover story for more tips and tricks to turn your yard into a no-mosquito zone. Elsewhere we’re thrilled to profile Chad Bernstein, a world-famous Miami musician who has translated his passion for music into a passion for helping kids in need. His unique organization, Guitars Over Guns, is making incredible headway in keeping kids in underserved areas of Miami and Chicago focused on creativity and fostering the next generation of talent. We’re also gearing up for Father’s Day with our first-ever Father’s Day Gift Guide, spotlighting exciting new gifts for every type of South Florida Dad. Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find us online at TheFloridaVillager.com.

SPRING AWAKENING
HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE IN CONCERT

The bride is Jewish. The groom is Catholic. Her mother is a force of nature; his mother is a tempest in a cocktail shaker. And when the bride’s ex-boyfriend shows up, the perfect wedding starts to unravel faster than one can whistle, “Here Comes the Bride.” USA Today called this South Florida premiere “endearingly old-fashioned in spirit and decidedly contemporary in execution. Actors Playhouse; actorsplayhouse.org

Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

The Return of a Local Legend

HEN SIAM LOTUS ROOM CLOSED ITS doors in 2010, it warranted a front page story in the Herald Business Section. Legions of fans were left craving that old school Thai cuisine “the ugly green building” on US1 made famous for almost forty years. Now, those same fans can head to Coconut Grove, where Siam Lotus owner Atchana Capellini and her husband, Steve, have opened Atchana’s Homegrown Thai. The husband and wife team own and operate the restaurant, while Atchana’s brother is the Executive Chef. “No sushi, no fusion, nothing not-Thai,” says Atchana. “We’re going for that same authentic taste our customers loved back in South Miami. Most of the recipes are the same, with some notable new entries like Thai Basil Ribs. We even have the same chef from the Thai countryside preparing our egg rolls, our curry sauce and our crispy duck.” More than just the food has come with her from her old place. “We even kept the wooden door from Siam Lotus Room and used it in our dining room,” says Atchana. “And our beautiful new fish tank was created by the same man who did our aquarium at Siam Lotus Room.” Atchana worked to revive an old time favorite

from South Miami but also bring something distinct to Coconut Grove. “My husband and I first met right down there, a block from Homegrown at The Village Inn on Commodore Plaza thirty years ago.” she says, “We wanted to showcase everything local in the restaurant; that’s what the Village of the Grove is all about. Our bar, the walls and all the tables, for instance, are handmade from pilings and docks from around the shores of the
Coconut Grove area. Our friendly, unpretentious service is inviting to those traveling to the Grove area and to the Grovites who live on the ‘land island’ within Miami.” Business has been brisk at the new place, on the busy corner of Grand and Commodore. Outside seating and a rustic interior featuring a Bangkok street scene have drawn a crowd of former Siam Lotus Room clients, plus new folks from the Grove and beyond. They are all getting a taste of something new and old at the same time. Featuring local craft beer, selected Thai beers and an extensive wine list, the restaurant’s Happy Hour starts promptly at 3pm. Atchana, her husband and their team invite new and old fans to visit the new space, where they will find Mee Grob, Crispy Duck, Papaya Salad and Sticky Rice... just a few of the family favorites that have been brought to the Grove. Maybe it can all be summed up by dessert, which has much the same flavor and ingredients as the original, with a little something new. “You will love the new/ old Thai Doughnuts,” says Atchana. “They’re a little different, updated for the new place. Now we feature Thai Doughnut Holes with chocolate sauce, shredded coconut and butterscotch bits to dip into. People are loving it.” Sometimes, when old meets new, things turn out just right.

The Music Man GUITARS OVER GUNS GUITARSOVERGUNS.ORG BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND:
A renowned musician and teacher, Bernstein has spent much of his life drawing inspiration from music, but it was his sense of community that drew him to become a “social entrepreneur.” Bernstein says growing up in a family that didn’t hide the challenges of the world around him helped him and his brother Max (a Marine) understand their good fortune. “We were always encouraged to be open-minded, to treat all people with respect and empathy, and to enrich our lives by sharing with others, be that experiences, conversation, a meal, or something we have that others may not,” he says of his parents. “Being fortunate enough to have been brought up in a safe neighborhood with a loving, supportive family was not lost on us, and I think that it created a sense of responsibility for us both to give back or pay that forward.”
THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
THE DETAILS
GOGO relies on the support of not only professional musicians, but community members as well. “We are currently offering donation opportunities that include sponsoring a student, sponsoring a mentor (who will work with 5-10 youth), and even sponsoring school sites,” says Bernstein. “Setting up a monthly donation is one of the best ways to support - our sustainers are the lifeblood of the organization and allow us to keep the programs running. We also accept used musical instruments (guitars, basses, keyboards, drum sets, and sound/production gear).” Beyond financial donations, Bernstein says the musicians who participate are able to channel their own passion into what he calls “a powerful catalyst for change.” Adds Bernstein, “It is truly life-changing and most of our mentors will tell you that they are affected as much as the students by the program.”
THE FUTURE
Bernstein hopes to continue the organization’s growth and is eyeing expansion to New York and Los Angeles in the coming years. For now, he’s concentrating on the 600 students in Miami and Chicago who look to him and his team of passionate musicians to help them navigate oftentimes difficult situations. With the first classes of middle school students now entering college, GOGO is also rolling out GOGO Rise, a mentor program that connects community members with students to continue their mentorship through high school. “In 10 years, I would like to see the program's reach extend nationwide and start to connect youth internationally through the universal language of music. A shared vision of empowering youth to be future leaders through unlocking their creative potential would change the world.”
We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential through the transformation nature of music and the power of mentorship. That belief should be shared amongst our most challenged cities and spread deeply.”

ABOUT GUNS OVER GUITARS ORGANIZATION (GOGO)
Bernstein first created GOGO as an informal volunteer music mentoring program, aiming to work with youth from underserved areas in Miami, but soon saw it’s potential, formalizing the program and launching at North Miami Middle School in 2008. The idea was born out of a performance Bernstein did with local band Suénalo at a juvenile detention center. “They were a rowdy group and we were unable to reach them through conversation, but when we started playing they were entranced. Our music had elements of funk, salsa, pop, and rock, and when our MC started rapping the kids were hooked,” he says. After using one audience member’s outburst as a catalyst for a song, “the kids were transfixed and there was an amazing exchange that took place ... It was magical and completely elevated us all.” The lightbulb went off for Bernstein. “It was at that point that I realized what kind of unique power music has in connecting us with these youth.” Today, GOGO boasts programs in seven schools and various community centers throughout Miami and Chicago.

Gulliver’s Emilia Odife Prepares to Set Sail Thanks To NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
M
OST TEACHERS LOOK FOR A SUMMER ESCAPE FROM THE CLASSROOM, but not many get to do it aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II. Thanks to her selection as a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, Gulliver Preparatory Biology teacher Emilia Odife is preparing to become a member of the 11th group of Lindblad Expeditions alongside 34 other respected educators from around the US and Canada. The excursions, which will immerse the Fellows in learning and give them knowledge to bring back to their classrooms and professional communities, have already kicked into gear, with Odife visiting Washington DC for pre-expedition workshops covering everything from photography to outreach planning. We checked in with Odife to learn more about her exciting summer plans.
HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO APPLY? A co-worker mentioned it and I did some research. National Geographic has always been a favorite of mine since childhood. The idea that I could be part of something like this was, to say the least, enticing. I knew that if I was selected, this opportunity could be life changing as I would have the experience of learning from some of the best.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EXPEDITION AND THE PREPARATIONS? I will be traveling to the Galapagos from June 9-18th aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II. As part of our pre-expedition workshop, we (the 35 educators selected) traveled to the National Geographic Headquarters in Washington DC. Participants were trained by National Geographic naturalists and photographers from the prior expeditions in Alaska, Antarctica, Iceland, Galapagos, and other locations. We learned to use various Google tools and brainstormed ideas on how to incorporate our learning into our curriculum. Perhaps the best part of the workshop was the opportunity to share and explore ideas with other educators.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? Hard to tell! I have been a fan of Darwin since college, even my Master’s degree final project for a leadership class was on him. The Galapagos are like the holy grail of biology since it is the place that influenced and shaped Darwin’s theories on speciation. It represents possibilities, it represents resilience, and yes, it represents evolution. I cannot wait to see the many endemic species, observe their behavior, and just BE there. I am going with a plan but with an open mind as well.
IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON DURING YOUR TRIP? As a biology teacher with interests in genetics, evolution, and marine life, The Galapagos is the perfect living laboratory. Most people want to see the tortoises, but I want to see the finches. But really, I would like to focus on the interaction between the animals and their habitat, whether they be lizards or sea lions.
WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOUR INTEREST IN EXPLORATION AND GEOGRAPHY? I guess it is because I have always been restless. I have an innate curiosity for the natural world. And in my opinion exploration and geography go hand in hand. You can always explore but if you have no idea of where you are while doing it, then how are you going to share it?
HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BRING THE EXPERIENCE BACK INTO YOUR CLASSROOM? I am planning on using the Galapagos experience as a bridge from genetics to the study of evolution in my classes. Students are intrigued by the personal experiences of their teachers, which can make facts and concepts more tangible, and the discussions more interesting and engaging.

T
HE PRESTIGIOUS ELIE WIESEL Foundation for Humanity recognized 10 high school students from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) for their entries in the 2017 Prize in Ethics Essay Contest. For the fourth year, M-DCPS is the only district in the nation to have high school juniors and seniors participate in this contest originally created for college students. Thousands of young people have participated in the Foundation’s Prize in Ethics at the college level since its inception in 1989. Iria Abrahantes Morales, a senior at New World School of the Arts, won first place and a $3,000 college scholarship for her essay titled, “An Immigrant in America.” Second place was awarded to Margaret "Lucy" Farrell, a junior at New World School of the Arts, who received $2,000. Third place went to Melanie Rodriguez, a junior at the iPreparatory Academy. She received $1,000. The runners-up were Daria Samway, a junior at iPreparatory Academy; and Eva Bibas, a junior at Coral Reef Senior High. They each received $500. Five finalists were Taliah Coradin-Britt - Cutler Bay Senior High; Betty Martinez – Mater Academy Charter; Spencer Bernstein – MAST @ FIU; Christopher Suarez – Terra Environmental Research; and Kelsy Ruano – Barbara Goleman Senior High. The winners were announced at a ceremony at The Betsy-South Beach. The

H E A LT H & FIT N ES S
Just Move BY CARY R. SOCHIN
M
OVING YOUR BODY DAILY, EVEN FOR SHORT DURATIONS, IS ONE OF the most important habits one can create in order to maintain good health. Truthfully, every time you workout doesn’t have to be an ultra-intense test of will…or, shall we say, an “exercise” in torture. Especially for those short on time, brief periods of physical activity throughout the day are the ideal supplement to the occasional high-intensity workouts. Everyone should make time to keep fit, but for those days when you just can’t seem to squeeze in an extended fitness routine, it’s essential that you don’t allow yourself to become completely inactive. In the past year alone, the number of completely sedentary Americans dropped from 28.3 percent to 27.6 percent according to survey results from the Physical Activity Council. Frankly, this number is still far too high and that’s not the only concern. The American Heart Association reported that since 1950 the number of sedentary jobs has increased 83 percent. In addition, the average work week has been extended and requires more focus and energy as compared to years past. Between work, family, and everything else life throws at us, our “free time” is seemingly occupied with more “stuff” than ever; yet we are disturbingly becoming more sedentary than ever. In times like this we could all use some guidance on how to find ways to squeeze in physical activity. So here are a few relatively simple ways to fit more exercise into your schedule.
Multi-task Whether going for a workout at the gym or power-walking around the neighborhood, chances are there is a way you can check off a few tasks from your to-do list at the same time. Many gym-goers catch up on the news on TV or listen to an audio book or a podcast while on the treadmill. Junebe even compile your grocery shopping list while sweating away on that elliptical? If you’re opting for the neighborhood power-walk (one of the least utilized and most underrated forms of exercise), one of the many benefits is how easy it is to multi-task. You can make phone calls, bring the dog along, or even squeeze in some in-person socializing with a workout buddy.
Take the stairs If you are presented with the option and there are a reasonable number of flights to climb, always opt for the stairs over an elevator. Just be cautious…some offices have stairwells with security locks on the doors! It June sound a bit impractical but parking on an upper level of a parking garage and then running the stairs is another quick, effective way to squeeze in some exercise - all while increasing your energy (really!). For example, a typical man weighing 185 pounds will burn approximately 180 calories just by climbing stairs for 20 minutes. Similarly just a few minutes of stair-climbing each day will make you heart-healthy in no time.
Do jumping jacks As mentioned, it’s important not to discount the simple and/or quickest of workouts. Basic exercises such as jumping jacks or dreaded burpees are always a great go-to since you can perform them almost anywhere. If you are able to get in a few quick bursts several times throughout the day these “base” exercises can add up to a pretty decent workout. Just pick a few favorite compound moves to keep in your “tool box” so that when you have a few free minutes you’ll know exactly how to give your body the boost it needs. Fighting the Bite Fight

HEN IT COMES TO PESTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, there are few as loathed as the mosquito. Terrorizing residents everywhere from schoolyards to the backyard, the lowly insect strikes fear (and welts) in the hearts of just about all Miamians. Enter Mosquito Joe. The nationwide company (they boast franchises across the country) took its place in South Florida three years ago thanks to business partners Yoel Gutierrez and Omar Sanchez, who were inspired to leave their former careers after a chance encounter with the Mosquito Joe opportunity. “I went to visit my mother in Georgia and her neighbor had purchased a Mosquito Joe franchise,” says Gutierrez. “I started looking at the business and it was something that always bothered us — my wife gets bitten all the time.” The appeal for the partners was the singular focus on mosquito control, an area of pest control that has gained popularity among other pest control companies over the past decade. “A lot of the pest control companies are trying to get into mosquito control, but that’s the only thing we do, that’s what we focus on,” says Gutierrez. “Omar and I employ a team of experienced technicians dedicated to making outdoor spaces for residential and commercial properties mosquito-free.” They do that by employing everything from a 30-minute barrier spray (it kills mosquitoes on contact and bonds to foliage, which gives it a 3 week lifespan) to all-natural solutions, which repel the mosquitos and requires a 14-day spraying cycle. Also growing in popularity are

the company's misting systems, which release a misting spray several times daily. “All our technicians are licensed and trained in mosquito control treatment applications and are a great resource for specific concerns you have about your yard,” says Gutierrez. Unlike other companies, Mosquito Joe works in a non-contractual capacity, a benefit that appeals to many customers according to the owners. “You can start and finish your service whenever you wish, although we suggest to continue the service year round so the mosquito population does not have a chance to regain its numbers,” says Gutierrez, who has worked with venues and locations such as Tropical Park, Shops at Sunset Place and Wayside Market. Typical service revolves around three-week cycles, but the company also offers one-time special event sprays for outdoor parties and events. They can also easily put accounts on hold for homeowners who leave town. Families are particularly interested in the service, say the owners, because of the company’s dedication to EPA approved products. “All we ask is that any animals and children be out of the way while we spray and then stay out of the area 30 minutes or so after the treatment so that it can dry,” explains Gutierrez. In the end all of the company's offerings come together as one simple goal: “We’re trying to relieve the stress of going outside for families and children.” For more information about how Mosquito Joe can help you, Please call 786-516-2488 or visit southmiami.mosquitojoe.com.
PROTECT YOURSELF
Wondering how to escape the wrath of the mosquito. Here are some tips from Guiterrez and Sanchez on how to keep yourself bite-free this summer. • Be water aware. According to the owners the primary source of Miami’s bite comes courtesy of Aedes Aegypti--a container breeder. That means the insects can breed in anything that holds even just a tablespoon of water. “We’ll treat a yard and then it will inevitably rain and new water will collect in toys or planters and create a breeding ground,” says Gutierrez. • Clean your yard. Regularly checking for standing water can save time, money and itching. Sanchez and Gutierrez advise checking everything from pots to outdoor toys and making sure they are drained and clean. • Go for the gutters. Rain gutters can be a main source for mosquito breeding, so giving them a look is time well-spent. “Every one of those little ridges holds water in the bottom and no one ever tips them over. Those are always full of mosquito larvae.” • Beware of the Bromeliad. Even the flowers and plants in your yard can be a danger. Gutierrez points to Bromeliads as a major offender as they “hold a ton of water!” He advises hosing them down once a day to replace standing water with fresh water. • Go light. Stick to long-sleeves and light-colored clothing when relaxing outdoors to keep bites at bay.

5 Questions With Lance Goldberg AREA SUPERVISOR FOR CROWN WINE & SPIRITS
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
F
OR LANCE GOLDBERG, INFORMATION IS EVERYTHING. The Area Supervisor for Crown Wine & Spirits and wine and spirits expert spends his days traveling between Crown stores, working with teams on product knowledge and ensuring each location lives up to the Crown reputation. Because of that, Goldberg’s teams are some of the most knowledgeable in the market when it comes not only to individual purchases, but gifts, customization and customer service. We spoke with the longtime Crown representative about must-have spirits, quality versus price and just what makes a great Father’s Day gift.
SO, FOR THE UNEDUCATED, WHAT IS A SPIRIT AND WHAT TYPES OF SPIRITS SHOULD EVERYONE HAVE IN THEIR HOME BAR? At its simplest, a spirit is a distilled alcoholic beverage. So it can be anything from scotch to bourbon or even triple sec. I would say everyone should try to have at least one bottle from each spirit category if they’re building a home bar. Beyond that, scotch is an incredibly popular spirit right now.
WHEN IT COMES TO GIFTS, IS THERE ONE PARTICULAR THING TO REMEMBER WHEN BUYING FOR OTHER PEOPLE? The great thing about Crown is that you’re always going to be greeted by a knowledgeable team member, so it’s really about what the recipient likes. What do they prefer to drink? How do they like to drink it? What’s your budget? From there we can guide customers to the right place. We also do great gift baskets that are all hand made.
WHAT ABOUT PRICE? DOES MORE EXPENSIVE MEAN BETTER?
FATHER’S DAY IS AROUND THE CORNER, WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE A BIG SELLER?
Price is not always the determining factor of quality. Quality is subjective. What I would recommend is to share with us what price range you’re comfortable in and we can guide you to the best quality in that range. There are great scotches that are $30 and great scotches that are $30,000. There’s also a great selection of accessories that can fit into most any budget; everything from bitters and mixers to spoons, strainers, cocktail shakers, citrus squeezers… even wood planks and torches.
The fastest growing category is bourbon. There’s bourbon for every different kind of drinker: heavy, light, smooth or rugged edge. If someone got me a bottle of bourbon for Father’s Day, I’d be a happy guy! It used to be that bourbon had to be from Kentucky and it had to be sipped straight, but now we have bourbons coming from all over America. We just got in a great one from Oregon called Burnside that’s made with oak grown just outside of Portland. It’s very different from the bourbons that come from Kentucky and it ranges from $25-$50. It’s a great entry-level bourbon for mixing or drinking neat.
Visit Crown Wine and Spirits at one of their three area locations in and around Coral Gables, or at one of 12 total locations in Broward and Dade Counties. For more information, or to find the nearest location, please visit crownwineandspirits.com.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER TRENDS IN THE SPIRIT WORLD? The resurgence of the cocktail! People got used to going out and spending $15-$20 for a martini or and old-fashioned. Now, people are not as into that, they’re making more cocktails at home and getting creative with it. You can buy the components at the store… we have incredible mixers like Fever-Tree tonics and ginger beers and a huge selection of bitters. Plus, we customize every basket, so we can put together an entire kit to make the perfect Moscow Mule or whatever you like. Beer is another growing category. I would say 75 percent of our cooler doors are now focused on micro- and local breweries like [Miami-based] Funky Buddha. We’ve taken a big interest in craft beers, they’re fresh and vibrant… and Miami has some great brewers!

Meet Cosmo & Oakley
C
OSMO IS AN EIGHT year old male French Bulldog and Oakley is a three year old female French Bulldog. Their favorite person is their mom, who they keep an eye on at all times when at home. They love to snuggle with her and watch TV at night, as long as the sound isn’t too loud. Cosmo and Oakley’s favorite toy is anything furry and anything that allows them both to play a good game of tug of war. They love to socialize with all their fellow dog friends and they love the neighborhood girls who take them on walks and play with them. Cosmo and Oakley strongly dislike swimming, so when their mom goes in the pool they bark at her constantly to get out! Their favorite thing to do is walk on Sanibel beach and find seashells to take home.

UMAN FOOD TRENDS ARE BEING SEEN IN THE PET FOOD MARKET. THE pet food industry is so powerful that it represented $29.5 billion in 2015. Taking advantage of the human trend for “holistic” or “natural” diets, is the emerging market of “designer” or niche pet foods. Many misconceptions about animal nutrition have been propagated as part of their marketing strategies through websites, blogs and other marketing channels. The misconception that corn is bad for pets is perhaps one of the most popular ones. Corn is a staple food item for many people (polenta, tortillas, grits, arepas, etc). Corn was considered to have sacred qualities for many cultures dating back 2000 to 1500 years BC in South, Central and North America. There are more than 100 varieties of corn. They vary by their particular colors and nutritional components, among other factors. With this in mind, let's bust the four most common myths about corn. 1. Corn is a filler grain. Corn contains important nutrients including vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and carbohydrates. In addition, the protein in corn is a vegetable protein which might be easier to digest for your pet than meat proteins. Corn provides health-supportive antioxidant benefits, and an ideal ratio of insoluble to soluble fiber. 2. Grain-free diets (carbohydrate free diets) are a more natural pet diet. Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy. Most grainfree diets lack carbohydrates, and so are higher in fat and calories in order to provide adequate energy levels. This leads to obesity, flatulence, and, in some patients, pancreatitis. Some grain-free diets contain highly refined starches to replace the grains (ex. potatoes, tapioca and cassava) which contain less fiber and nutrients than grains. Additionally, these refined starches increase the overall cost of that pet food. Other grain-free diets replace the grain with beans, peas, and lentils as a carbohydrate source. These sources are not necessarily superior than grains and may lead to gastrointestinal upset in the pet. 3. Grain free diets are less likely to cause allergies. Food allergies are uncommon in pets and represent less than 10 percent of the allergies that affect dogs and cats. Grain allergies are even more rare. Beef, poultry and dairy are the most prevalent food allergens for affected pets. 4. Grains might contain gluten which is bad for pets. Gluten intolerance is an autoimmune disease specific to humans. It is an allergy to the gluten protein in wheat, rye and barley. Gluten intolerance is extremely rare in dogs, and is virtually nonexistent in cats. Grain-free pet diets offer no additional benefits over conventional ones and, in most cases, may have a higher cost. Furthermore, they could facilitate gastrointestinal conditions such as flatulence, soft stool, obesity, and pancreatitis. When deciding on the ideal diet for your pet, do not rely on the presence or absence of a specific ingredient. Instead, focus on the nutrient content of the diet as a whole. Pay attention to the effects of the diet on your pet, such as the consistency and volume of stool, the quality of the coat, and their energy levels while eating the diet long term. When a prescription diet is advised to aid in managing a disease, such as kidney disease or diabetes, consider the overall health benefit of that diet for your pet, as opposed to choosing the diet just because it contains corn or not. Our pets are what they eat. Be smart when choosing their diet. When in doubt ask your pet’s doctor for advice.

MANY LEGS TO A STOOL: DOWN TO THE BASICS BY ROSANNA BERMEJO, MBA RN

acids. Vitamin A helps with the overall functioning and communication of the skin cells. It is considered a “normalizer” of the skin, with protective metabolic activity. Vitamin C helps boost the immune system, even out the skin tone and stimulate collagen. It is an antioxidant essential in the protection of fat structures; while Vitamin E is another antioxidant, which enhances the effect of sunblock and protects collagen. Regarding your fatty acids, these help with the skin membrane and have an overall impact on the health of the skin. Lifestyle also matters. In other words, late night meals can result in less absorption of nutrients. Diseases and medications can have a similar effect. We also have to watch other factors such as getting enough exercise and hydration, the number of meals we eat, fat free diets, number of takeaway meals a week, and more since these all can affect how well we absorb important nutrients and the state of our skin. So while nutrition and topicals are important, there are other legs to a stool. Stay tuned for more on this topic. VERY MORNING WHEN I wake up, I look in the mirror and wonder how my skin is doing. I don’t think I’m very different from most of you in that my face is my window to the world, and as such I am keen in making sure it always reflects who I am. However, being in the industry gives me an advantage and that is the possibility to take the time and study the skin extensively inside out. While there are many little things that we can do every day to help our skin, we have to remember to start with the basics. When talking skin, the basics start with nutrition. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and as such, it reflects a lot of what is happening inside our bodies. There lies the importance of eating well and applying the appropriate topicals to our skin: topicals that actually penetrate the skin barrier giving it the nutrients it requires. What topicals is a completely different matter. My goal here is to stress the importance of giving your skin what it needs. Regardless, I would like to emphasize the role of Vitamins A, C, E, and your fatty
