it's Summertime!
W
ELCOME TO SUMMER! THE SEASON OF BBQs, pool parties, sunscreen and, yes, mosquitos. Those pesky insects can cause more stress for South Floridians than heatstroke and Hurricanes combined. That’s why we’re so excited to feature Mosquito Joe on our June cover. Owners Yoel Gutierrez and Omar Sanchez have dedicated their careers to making yards (and other spaces) family-friendly and free of mosquitoes, using everything from barrier sprays to misting systems to help us spend our summers bite-free. Check out our cover story for more tips and tricks to turn your yard into a no-mosquito zone. Elsewhere we’re thrilled to profile Chad Bernstein, a world-famous Miami musician who has translated his passion for music into a passion for helping kids in need. His unique organization, Guitars Over Guns, is making incredible headway in keeping kids in underserved areas of Miami and Chicago focused on creativity and fostering the next generation of talent. We’re also gearing up for Father’s Day with our first-ever Father’s Day Gift Guide, spotlighting exciting new gifts for every type of South Florida Dad. Don't forget to connect with us via social media. You can find us on Twitter (@FloridaVillager), Facebook (The Florida Villager), and Instagram (@thefloridavillager). You can also find us online at TheFloridaVillager.com. Sincerely,

FATHER’S DAY BRUNCH THE GYPSY KINGS
TOY: A STORY OF FRIENDSHIP
Melding deep-heated flamenco, rumba, salsa and pop to the tune of 20 million albums sold, the Grammy Award-winning hit-makers behind 'Bamboléo' celebrate in their very own, blistering tradition – taking audiences back to the south of France with flamenco guitars and booming Spanish vocals. Uniting the family Reyes and the family Baliardo, the band continues a tradition that has drawn famous fans such as Picasso, Cocteau, Dalí and Chaplin. 8pm; arshtcenter.org
The story begins in a toy store in New York, where all the toys live happily and look forward to being purchased by good children that will play with them. However, some toys like Woody and Jessy are meant to be purchased together. When two friends walk into the Toy Store on a sunny Saturday morning, and buy Jessy and not Wood the toys come up with a plan to escape the store and venture out into New York City. Pinecrest is recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management for nine consecutive years. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Cleaner air, improved storm water management, energy savings and increased property values and commercial activity are among the benefits enjoyed by Tree City USA communities.

HEN SIAM LOTUS ROOM CLOSED ITS doors in 2010, it warranted a front page story in the Herald Business Section. Legions of fans were left craving that old school Thai cuisine “the ugly green building” on US1 made famous for almost forty years. Now, those same fans can head to Coconut Grove, where Siam Lotus owner Atchana Capellini and her husband, Steve, have opened Atchana’s Homegrown Thai. The husband and wife team own and operate the restaurant, while Atchana’s brother is the Executive Chef. “No sushi, no fusion, nothing not-Thai,” says Atchana. “We’re going for that same authentic taste our customers loved back in South Miami. Most of the recipes are the same, with some notable new entries like Thai Basil Ribs. We even have the same chef from the Thai countryside preparing our egg rolls, our curry sauce and our crispy duck.” More than just the food has come with her from her old place. “We even kept the wooden door from Siam Lotus Room and used it in our dining room,” says Atchana. “And our beautiful new fish tank was created by the same man who did our aquarium at Siam Lotus Room.” Atchana worked to revive an old time favorite

from South Miami but also bring something distinct to Coconut Grove. “My husband and I first met right down there, a block from Homegrown at The Village Inn on Commodore Plaza thirty years ago.” she says, “We wanted to showcase everything local in the restaurant; that’s what the Village of the Grove is all about. Our bar, the walls and all the tables, for instance, are handmade from pilings and docks from around the shores of the
Coconut Grove area. Our friendly, unpretentious service is inviting to those traveling to the Grove area and to the Grovites who live on the ‘land island’ within Miami.” Business has been brisk at the new place, on the busy corner of Grand and Commodore. Outside seating and a rustic interior featuring a Bangkok street scene have drawn a crowd of former Siam Lotus Room clients, plus new folks from the Grove and beyond. They are all getting a taste of something new and old at the same time. Featuring local craft beer, selected Thai beers and an extensive wine list, the restaurant’s Happy Hour starts promptly at 3pm. Atchana, her husband and their team invite new and old fans to visit the new space, where they will find Mee Grob, Crispy Duck, Papaya Salad and Sticky Rice... just a few of the family favorites that have been brought to the Grove. Maybe it can all be summed up by dessert, which has much the same flavor and ingredients as the original, with a little something new. “You will love the new/ old Thai Doughnuts,” says Atchana. “They’re a little different, updated for the new place. Now we feature Thai Doughnut Holes with chocolate sauce, shredded coconut and butterscotch bits to dip into. People are loving it.” Sometimes, when old meets new, things turn out just right.

Capillus laser therapy works through the process of photobiomodulation. Just like plants convert light energy to produce oxygen from carbon dioxide, cells on the scalp convert light energy from lasers into chemical energy to restore normal function in hair follicles. If caught on time, photobiomodulation can reverse the process of hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia by restoring cellular function at the cellular level of the hair follicle, restoring the hair follicle.

Gulliver’s Emilia Odife Prepares to Set Sail Thanks To NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
M
OST TEACHERS LOOK FOR A SUMMER ESCAPE FROM THE CLASSROOM, but not many get to do it aboard the National Geographic Endeavor II. Thanks to her selection as a National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, Gulliver Preparatory Biology teacher Emilia Odife is preparing to become a member of the 11th group of Lindblad Expeditions alongside 34 other respected educators from around the US and Canada. The excursions, which will immerse the Fellows in learning and give them knowledge to bring back to their classrooms and professional communities, have already kicked into gear, with Odife visiting Washington DC for pre-expedition workshops covering everything from photography to outreach planning. We checked in with Odife to learn more about her exciting summer plans.
HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO APPLY? A co-worker mentioned it and I did some research. National Geographic has always been a favorite of mine since childhood. The idea that I could be part of something like this was, to say the least, enticing. I knew that if I was selected, this opportunity could be life changing as I would have the experience of learning from some of the best.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR EXPEDITION AND THE PREPARATIONS? I will be traveling to the Galapagos from June 9-18th aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II. As part of our pre-expedition workshop, we (the 35 educators selected) traveled to the National Geographic Headquarters in Washington DC. Participants were trained by National Geographic naturalists and photographers from the prior expeditions in Alaska, Antarctica, Iceland, Galapagos, and other locations. We learned to use various Google tools and brainstormed ideas on how to incorporate our learning into our curriculum. Perhaps the best part of the workshop was the opportunity to share and explore ideas with other educators.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? Hard to tell! I have been a fan of Darwin since college, even my Master’s degree final project for a leadership class was on him. The Galapagos are like the holy grail of biology since it is the place that influenced and shaped Darwin’s theories on speciation. It represents possibilities, it represents resilience, and yes, it represents evolution. I cannot wait to see the many endemic species, observe their behavior, and just BE there. I am going with a plan but with an open mind as well.
IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIFIC YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON DURING YOUR TRIP? As a biology teacher with interests in genetics, evolution, and marine life, The Galapagos is the perfect living laboratory. Most people want to see the tortoises, but I want to see the finches. But really, I would like to focus on the interaction between the animals and their habitat, whether they be lizards or sea lions.
WHAT HAS INSPIRED YOUR INTEREST IN EXPLORATION AND GEOGRAPHY? I guess it is because I have always been restless. I have an innate curiosity for the natural world. And in my opinion exploration and geography go hand in hand. You can always explore but if you have no idea of where you are while doing it, then how are you going to share it?
HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BRING THE EXPERIENCE BACK INTO YOUR CLASSROOM? I am planning on using the Galapagos experience as a bridge from genetics to the study of evolution in my classes. Students are intrigued by the personal experiences of their teachers, which can make facts and concepts more tangible, and the discussions more interesting and engaging.

The Music Man GUITARS OVER GUNS GUITARSOVERGUNS.ORG BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND:
A renowned musician and teacher, Bernstein has spent much of his life drawing inspiration from music, but it was his sense of community that drew him to become a “social entrepreneur.” Bernstein says growing up in a family that didn’t hide the challenges of the world around him helped him and his brother Max (a Marine) understand their good fortune. “We were always encouraged to be open-minded, to treat all people with respect and empathy, and to enrich our lives by sharing with others, be that experiences, conversation, a meal, or something we have that others may not,” he says of his parents. “Being fortunate enough to have been brought up in a safe neighborhood with a loving, supportive family was not lost on us, and I think that it created a sense of responsibility for us both to give back or pay that forward.”
THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
THE DETAILS
GOGO relies on the support of not only professional musicians, but community members as well. “We are currently offering donation opportunities that include sponsoring a student, sponsoring a mentor (who will work with 5-10 youth), and even sponsoring school sites,” says Bernstein. “Setting up a monthly donation is one of the best ways to support - our sustainers are the lifeblood of the organization and allow us to keep the programs running. We also accept used musical instruments (guitars, basses, keyboards, drum sets, and sound/production gear).” Beyond financial donations, Bernstein says the musicians who participate are able to channel their own passion into what he calls “a powerful catalyst for change.” Adds Bernstein, “It is truly life-changing and most of our mentors will tell you that they are affected as much as the students by the program.”
THE FUTURE
Bernstein hopes to continue the organization’s growth and is eyeing expansion to New York and Los Angeles in the coming years. For now, he’s concentrating on the 600 students in Miami and Chicago who look to him and his team of passionate musicians to help them navigate oftentimes difficult situations. With the first classes of middle school students now entering college, GOGO is also rolling out GOGO Rise, a mentor program that connects community members with students to continue their mentorship through high school. “In 10 years, I would like to see the program's reach extend nationwide and start to connect youth internationally through the universal language of music. A shared vision of empowering youth to be future leaders through unlocking their creative potential would change the world.”
We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential through the transformation nature of music and the power of mentorship. That belief should be shared amongst our most challenged cities and spread deeply.”

ABOUT GUNS OVER GUITARS ORGANIZATION (GOGO)
Bernstein first created GOGO as an informal volunteer music mentoring program, aiming to work with youth from underserved areas in Miami, but soon saw it’s potential, formalizing the program and launching at North Miami Middle School in 2008. The idea was born out of a performance Bernstein did with local band Suénalo at a juvenile detention center. “They were a rowdy group and we were unable to reach them through conversation, but when we started playing they were entranced. Our music had elements of funk, salsa, pop, and rock, and when our MC started rapping the kids were hooked,” he says. After using one audience member’s outburst as a catalyst for a song, “the kids were transfixed and there was an amazing exchange that took place ... It was magical and completely elevated us all.” The lightbulb went off for Bernstein. “It was at that point that I realized what kind of unique power music has in connecting us with these youth.” Today, GOGO boasts programs in seven schools and various community centers throughout Miami and Chicago.

Fighting the Bite Fight
t h g i F te i B e th g n F ighti BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

HEN IT COMES TO PESTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, there are few as loathed as the mosquito. Terrorizing residents everywhere from schoolyards to the backyard, the lowly insect strikes fear (and welts) in the hearts of just about all Miamians. Enter Mosquito Joe. The nationwide company (they boast franchises across the country) took its place in South Florida three years ago thanks to business partners Yoel Gutierrez and Omar Sanchez, who were inspired to leave their former careers after a chance encounter with the Mosquito Joe opportunity. “I went to visit my mother in Georgia and her neighbor had purchased a Mosquito Joe franchise,” says Gutierrez. “I started looking at the business and it was something that always bothered us — my wife gets bitten all the time.” The appeal for the partners was the singular focus on mosquito control, an area of pest control that has gained popularity among other pest control companies over the past decade. “A lot of the pest control companies are trying to get into mosquito control, but that’s the only thing we do, that’s what we focus on,” says Gutierrez. “Omar and I employ a team of experienced technicians dedicated to making outdoor spaces for residential and commercial properties mosquito-free.” They do that by employing everything from a 30-minute barrier spray (it kills mosquitoes on contact and bonds to foliage, which gives it a 3 week lifespan) to all-natural solutions, which repel the mosquitos and requires a 14-day spraying cycle. Also growing in popularity are

the company's misting systems, which release a misting spray several times daily. “All our technicians are licensed and trained in mosquito control treatment applications and are a great resource for specific concerns you have about your yard,” says Gutierrez. Unlike other companies, Mosquito Joe works in a non-contractual capacity, a benefit that appeals to many customers according to the owners. “You can start and finish your service whenever you wish, although we suggest to continue the service year round so the mosquito population does not have a chance to regain its numbers,” says Gutierrez, who has worked with venues and locations such as Tropical Park, Shops at Sunset Place and Wayside Market. Typical service revolves around three-week cycles, but the company also offers one-time special event sprays for outdoor parties and events. They can also easily put accounts on hold for homeowners who leave town. Families are particularly interested in the service, say the owners, because of the company’s dedication to EPA approved products. “All we ask is that any animals and children be out of the way while we spray and then stay out of the area 30 minutes or so after the treatment so that it can dry,” explains Gutierrez. In the end all of the company's offerings come together as one simple goal: “We’re trying to relieve the stress of going outside for families and children.” For more information about how Mosquito Joe can help you, Please call 786-516-2488 or visit southmiami.mosquitojoe.com.
PROTECT YOURSELF
Wondering how to escape the wrath of the mosquito. Here are some tips from Guiterrez and Sanchez on how to keep yourself bite-free this summer. • Be water aware. According to the owners the primary source of Miami’s bite comes courtesy of Aedes Aegypti--a container breeder. That means the insects can breed in anything that holds even just a tablespoon of water. “We’ll treat a yard and then it will inevitably rain and new water will collect in toys or planters and create a breeding ground,” says Gutierrez. • Clean your yard. Regularly checking for standing water can save time, money and itching. Sanchez and Gutierrez advise checking everything from pots to outdoor toys and making sure they are drained and clean. • Go for the gutters. Rain gutters can be a main source for mosquito breeding, so giving them a look is time well-spent. “Every one of those little ridges holds water in the bottom and no one ever tips them over. Those are always full of mosquito larvae.” • Beware of the Bromeliad. Even the flowers and plants in your yard can be a danger. Gutierrez points to Bromeliads as a major offender as they “hold a ton of water!” He advises hosing them down once a day to replace standing water with fresh water. • Go light. Stick to long-sleeves and light-colored clothing when relaxing outdoors to keep bites at bay.

and upping the resident count to more than 100 doctors and six specialties. “I think it’s a really exciting part of our continued growth and evolution,” says Haushalter. “We’re helping to train and develop future clinicians. N AN EFFORT TO BETTER SERVE THE SOUTH FLORIDA community and keep up with the hospital’s growth, Kendall Regional Medical Center will embark on a $90 million expansion that will include two new floors, a 760-space parking deck and a new pediatric unit. “As more and more patients continue to choose Kendall Regional, our physical space needs to keep up with that growth,” said CEO Brandon Haushalter, who joined the hospital in November of 2016 after serving as CEO at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. Haushalter also says the expansion, which is scheduled to begin later this year, will add a new pediatric ICU as well as beds to the adult ICU. Another expansion for Kendall Regional will come in the form of two freestanding emergency rooms, one close to the Town & Country shopping center and another in Doral. “As the population in South Florida continues to grow we think it’s important for the community to have access to convenient emergency care,” says Haushalter. “In emergencies, minutes and seconds matter.” The two emergency centers will be full-service, serving higher acuity patients than an Urgent Care center and offering on-site imaging such as CT scans, X-rays and ultrasounds. “It will have the full capabilities of a hospital emergency room,” Haushalter says. Joining Kendall Regional was a no-brainer for the longtime healthcare executive, who was drawn to the center’s reputation for high levels of patient care, exem-

Once I had the opportunity to see and feel that, I fell in love with the opportunity to be a part of it.” This summer the hospital welcomes a new class of residents to its Graduate Medical Education Programs, making them the third class of students to join KRMC

All In The Family BY FRANK DEVALDIVIELSO
F
AMILY-RUN BUSINESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE ALWAYS at the ready to deliver excellent customer service to their patrons. It’s the lifeline of the business that makes it sustainable for years to come. Families depend directly on the business for an income that then gets injected back into the local economy when buying goods and services. Kids and adults use the infrastructure that our great community provides, including restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, parks, movie theaters, retailers and all you can think of. They generate federal income tax, state taxes and property taxes for the local municipality. The homes where these families live contribute with property taxes as well. Families care about each other and are willing to go the extra mile with their business to help one another. It’s refreshing to speak with a vendor that listens and responds without the use of scripts to address the issue. Family businesses can adapt to the individual circumstance and do what is right with autonomy in decisions — that right there is one reason why family run businesses will always have a market, their ability to make decisions at market speed. Another benefit is that those businesses can depend on family members to deliver complete service; it’s inherent. There is built-in accountability to ensure that. The marketing that promotes the business creates accountability with the community to deliver on the promise of excellent customer service. Right? Generational long-term service provides real-life opportunities to demonstrate shared values, work ethic and the consequences of every day decisions and actions. It shows the next generation how to work and make an honest living and allows them to set realistic goals for their future. A family that works together wins together and shares challenges when they come. This creates different perspectives with the same end goal, but with no hidden agenda or politics. It breeds transparency and trust in each other to do whatever has to be done, rain or shine. The juice that propels the business comes from the very basic need to provide for each other, now and in the future. A veritable raison d’être (purpose of being). In fact, we recently had the pleasure to work with a family that has been in the same business for nineteen generations. They have just moved here and are setting up their business. Welcome! Families that own businesses also care about the community by giving their time and talents. They show community care by contributing as committee leaders or within social groups in town, including coaching sports teams, organizing fund raising, participating in local council meetings, donating to charities and actively engaging with others for the improvement of quality of life. It takes a village to raise a child and we’re blessed to live in an area where people help each other. Sometimes random opportunity gives strangers a chance to teach a simple lesson. There are more people doing good than the opposite. Look and see for yourself. We do need family time and to keep separate the conversations about the business. That is a challenge in and of itself. Our own standard is to not discuss business after 7 p.m..We recognize that when we are blessed with business, it is part of our job to have down time that allows us rest and gives us the energy and clarity of mind to deliver on our promise of excellent service. 90 years after its inception, The Keyes Company continues to deliver services to you in South Florida. We are truly dedicated to and dependent of the local market. A Miami family owns and operates the company that then contributes right back to the local community. The DeValdivielso Team is part of this company and we are now into our second generation and counting… Thank you for your support!

Capillus BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
D
ORAL JUNE BE EXPERIENCING A RUSH OF attention (think CityPlace and those Instagrammable Bocas House desserts) but the owners of Capillus knew the benefits of the city before it became a popular destination for South Floridians. The company, which provides information and innovative hair loss treatments for men and women, moved into their Doral space two years ago and has watched the area grow and evolve since. We sat down with We sat down with the company’s owners to to talk city benefits, laser hair treatments and their latest groundbreaking treatment.
WHAT YEAR DID YOU ESTABLISH CAPILLUS AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO IN DORAL? Capillus was founded in October 2012, and we moved to our present day 25,000 square foot location in Doral to expand our manufacturing facilities in June of 2015. We are a family owned-and-operated business with roots in Miami for more than 50 years, so operating outside of Miami was never an option for us, especially considering Miami¹s evolvement into an international business hub. The city of Doral has come a very long way in a very short time, and we recognized an opportunity to positively contribute to the community's growth in the business sector. It¹s a really exciting time to be doing business in Doral.
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE AREA EVOLVE AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF BEING IN THE AREA? Doral has evolved into a really dynamic and energetic community over the past several years. The flourishing downtown has been a great asset for us-- there are an abundance of dining and entertainment options available for meetings with prospective clients. Plus, we’re centrally located to the airport, which is pivotal for

us for distribution purposes. Doral’s central location also affords us the ability to attract the greatest pool of employees from the Miami-Dade and Broward County area because people are drawn to the thriving community.
HOW DID THE BUSINESS COME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PRODUCT/IDEA? We first came to learn about lasers while providing marketing services for Dr. Bernard Nusbaum an internationally renowned hair transplant surgeon based in Miami. Through our work with him, we developed an interest in laser hair therapy and realized that there was an opportunity to create a product better than what currently existed in the market; something that met the highest quality and regulatory standards, was effective, and that physicians could trust. The Capillus 272 laser cap was our first product. From there, we developed two new models at different price points, and then expanded into a line of clinical hair therapy products including shampoos, keratin fibers, and minoxidil.
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR LASER CAP AND WHY IT¹S SO REVOLUTIONARY IN THE INDUSTRY? Capillus laser caps are the the world’s first, clinicallyproven, FDA-cleared laser cap to treat hair loss. Our caps are more discreet, eliminating the “shame factor” typically associated with hair loss treatment, and reasonable in price comparable to more cumbersome laser
combs, helmets and domes in the market.
WHEN WILL THE LASER CAP BE AVAILABLE FOR OTC PURCHASE AND WHERE WILL IT BE SOLD? Capillus laser therapy devices are currently available on Amazon.com and select salons and retailers, in addition to our website, capillus.com

INYL RECORDS. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. HOMESTEAD AIR FORCE BASE. Professional musician. Vinyl record awards. Excellent customer service. Music lessons. Are you wondering what this list represents? What these words have in common? The list represents the characteristics and service provided at Musicians Discount Center in South Florida. Did you know that this now full service, customer-focused music store started as a “small” vinyl record business – only selling vinyl records that were purchased at flea markets? Mike Cohen, a long-time professional drummer and owner of Musicians Discount Center is very proud of the history of his store and how far they have come. He opened “one of the first used vinyl record stores” in Florida – Records & Things – just outside the Homestead Air Force Base in 1981, after being “on the road” playing opening acts for the Allman Brothers. During the 80’s, business was booming and welcomed a second music store in Cutler Bay (its current Mike Cohen (middle), owner of Musicians Discount Center, and his staff. location). But with the devastating ruins of Hurricane Andrew, his first music store was demolished. And after nine long months of work, diligence and reinvestment, the Musicians Discount Center, a “one of a kind music store” was once again a member of the business community. The doors were re-opened to its customers from Florida and throughout the County in 1993. For over 30 years, the Musicians Discount Center has offered the services you can count on and an inventory that is second to none. The store is unique in South Florida because it carries such a wide variety of music products. Services include: band instruments and professional sound equipMusicians Discount Center carries everything for your music needs. ment rentals, rent-to-own program, instrument and amp repairs, music lessons for students and adults, and the sale of new and used instruments. It also has an extensive vinyl collection. In 2014, Musicians Discount Center was voted one of Miami’s Five Best Record stores, the best place to buy vinyl, by New Times. Musicians Discount Center was also voted 2015, 2016, and 2017 Best of the Best by the readers of The Florida Villager. As for Mike, you will see him around town, playing the drums in various jazz bands. He shares his love of music with others through his store. WITH DR. VICTORIA ROTHMAN, ORTHODONTIST
BY DR. VICTORIA ROTHMAN, ORTHODONIST
O
NE OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS I GET ASKED by parents is: “What is the correct age to start braces?” which is usually accompanied by the comment “It seems that braces are put on so early these days!” And in fact you may have noticed quite a few third and fourth graders around town running about with braces on their teeth. So what is the deal? Today, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends a checkup with an orthodontic specialist no later than age seven. This is not to say that every seven-year-old requires orthodontic treatment. Timing for orthodontic treatment is based on more than chronological age; it is dependent on a number of factors, including dental development, jaw development, the way a patient is biting, as well as esthetics. An early evaluation with an orthodontist allows the identification of potential problems that may require monitoring, or in other cases early treatment. Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases the orthodontist will be able to achieve results at an early age that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing.
Some examples of situations requiring early treatment are crossbites, oral habits, severe overbite, or severe underbite. These scenarios should be corrected when there is a mix of baby and permanent teeth present, and a second phase of treatment (braces) is typically needed at a later date when the remaining baby teeth fall out. Aside from scenarios such as those mentioned, most of the time a single phase of braces is indicated once all of the baby teeth have fallen out, which is commonly somewhere between the ages of 10-12 but varies greatly from child to child. At Pinecrest Orthodontics we recommend an early orthodontic evaluation to give your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile. Because patients differ in both physiological development and treatment needs, our goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time. Above all we always maintain the philosophy to treat our patients as if they were our own family. Please call Pinecrest Orthodontics today for your complimentary initial orthodontic consultation! Pinecrest Orthodontics is located in the Dixie Belle Shops at 12197 S. Dixie Highway in Pinecrest, FL. PH: 305-423-4130. pinecrestortho.com.

HESE DAYS IT SEEMS LIKE THERE’S A WORKOUT for everyone. Something for the core fanatics, for the time-strapped, for the one who needs personal attention, for the easily bored… But what if there was one workout that covered all of it? That was the idea behind VibeClass, a Brazilian-born exercise program that’s made its way to South Florida. Building on its popularity in Brazil, VibeClass opened its first studio on South Beach last summer before taking up residency in South Miami in January, introducing the benefits of vibration to a new crop of students. “My partner in Brazil was using vibration as a supplement to his workouts but soon started looking into how to expand and scale his training into a full workout,” says Cary Sochin, Vibe’s managing parter and a longtime fitness expert in South Florida. “He brought in fitness professionals and the 10-station concept was created.” The workout, as Sochin explains, is made up of 10 stations, eight of which make use of vibrating platforms that intensify the exercise and add another dimension to the workout (the other two act a “freeform” exercises adapted by an on-site trainer). Students progress through the stations three times during the 45-minute program and are led through each exercise by a virtual trainer on a screen attached to the station and trainers are able to modify exercises and help students who have personalized needs. “It’s personal training in a group setting with a max of 10 people at a time,” says Sochin. “You can make a reservation but you’re not beholden to a class time because you’re working out on your own. It’s very easy for a trainer to rework the exercise to meet your needs

allowing for truly personalized training alongside the more technologicallydriven vibe stations. Class packages are available as well as monthly rates without any contracts or long-term commitments and times are flexible, allowing students to get a workout in on their time, not the studio. “As you advance and become more proficient and have mastered the circuit we can take students on and off the platforms to do intervals,” says Sochin. “The workout is scalable to every fitness level and every need.”
and then reset it back right away for the next person.” Adding to the workout is the addition of the vibration, a technique that has long been used to aid everyone from olympic athletes to astronauts and has been lauded for its ability to not only burn fat and calories quickly but to help with flexibility, strength and injury recovery. “It really is multi-dimensional training across all disciplines. It speeds up the process of gaining strength, stamina, everything,” says Sochin. “When you add the vibration you add another dimension. And that’s why the workout is superior.” These benefits also allow the workout to, well, work for everyone from elderly students coping with bone density issues to elite athletes looking to supplement their training. “Creative” trainers are also part of the draw—

Are Your Visual Skills Up to Par? BY DR. LIANNE PINO
V
ISUAL SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR SCHOOL AND WORK success. The most common task we use in school and work is reading and writing. Visual success is more than just seeing 20/20, it is important to be able to make sense of what is seen. Visual skill deficiencies will affect our ability to work to our fullest potential. We need to possess a variety of vital visual skills to work accurately, comfortably and successfully. Below are some of these visual skills: »» Eye tracking - The ability to use our eyes together and accurately when we read and learn. If we don’t, we can skip words, add words, repeat lines and miss the meaning of what is being read. It includes our visual attention span that is used when reading efficiently. »» Eye focusing - We need to make clear what we see and sustain clarity when looking at near and/or far objects for a prolong period of time. »» Eye Teaming - to coordinate our two eyes to work together and sustain them working together. If excess energy and effort is used to do this, we can decrease our ability to comprehend and perform. In exophoria (eye’s tendency to drift out) and esophoria (eye’s tendency to drift in) you can illustrate distorted positions to avoid double vision such as covering an eye, laying your head down to block the view of one of the eyes and/or placing your nose in the view of one of the eyes to avoid double vision. Some people will hold the reading material close. »» Clear central vision - this is the 20/20 vision we often hear about. Unfortunately, when a person’s visual acuity is being measured it is usually done at far distances, but when we read, write and learn we usually work at a near distance of about 11-20 inches. »» Peripheral Vision - This is the “side” vision we use to get around and succeed in many sports. We also use our peripheral vision when we read efficiently. We can read more than just one word at a time and increase our reading speed. »» Depth Perception - we use this skill to tell where an object is located and how far or close it is. This is an important skill when playing sports and learning how to drive. »» Gross Visual-Motor Skills - We use this skill to get around our environment and make sense of where our body is in reference to our environment. »» Fine Visual-Motor Skills - these are the skills we use when working and seeing small and close objects. This is important in our handwriting skills. »» Visual Perception Skills - these skills are used to make sense of what we see in our environment. It involves our cognitive ability to see. It is how we use letters to make words and then make sentences. These skills include figureground, visual spatial, form constancy, copying, directionality, and others. »» Visual Information Processing - using our vision and other senses to accomplish a complex task. »» Visualization - this is the “mind’s eye”. It is the skill of making mental pictures of what we are thinking or reading about. This is a skill that is essential in reading comprehension. When writing the reverse process is used. We visualize then code to words and use our visual-motor integration skills to write. Vision is learned. Therefore, these skills can be taught and trained if a person doesn’t possess these skills. If we don’t have these skills we must exert too much effort in using our visual “tools” and it can hinder our maximum potential to succeed. This is where vision therapy can help. So, what is vision therapy? It is like physical therapy for our visual system and brains. We work on resolving the visual deficiencies that are interfering with a person's reading, learning and educational instruction. It is a progressive program of vision exercises/procedures under a developmental optometrist’s supervision. It is individualized to work specifically with a patient’s visual skill deficiencies. It usually includes in office vision therapy sessions one or two times per week with home reinforcement. It aims at improving the patient’s visual skills to improve visual comfort,

WOKE UP TO THE SUN TAPPING ON MY WINDOW. GRABBING MY COFFEE AND sand dollar (a tradition they have there) I stepped outside into the early morning air where I was greeted by a lone rabbit on the beach’s edge and pelicans skimming the water. Fort Sumter’s flag was not yet flying. I made my wish, tossed the sand dollar into the lapping water and so ended my stay at The Cottages.

THE FLORIDA VILLAGER
06.2017
But let’s start at the beginning. Nestled in a corner of Patriot’s Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina are ten adorable cottages, a pool and quaint Tommy Bahamas style clubhouse called The Cottages of Charleston Harbor. The smell of jasmine and the sky blue bicycles lined up on the porch welcomed me in. The pitcher of lemonade and plate of cookies were the perfect introduction to the best couple of days of restoring and renewing my soul. Not that that was my original plan, mind you, but once I saw the screened in porch with a hammock overlooking the water, my original plans went right out those plantation shuttered windows. My sightseeing weekend quickly became my Zen weekend. So much has already been written about all there is to do in Charleston but where does one go to rejuvenate? Look no further because I have found it. Of course, there is plenty to do in downtown Charleston in the way of sightseeing or eating, or you can paddle board/ kayak on Shem Creek and even take a quick jaunt to the quaint town of Georgetown for lunch but sometimes we just need to stop all the madness and relax. It won’t matter what season you decide to unwind. Each cottage has two bedrooms and three bathrooms, a full kitchen and living room with a fireplace. During the cool months, you can curl up in the hammock with a blanket or sit by the fireplace in the comfy club chair. In the warmer months, you can lie by the pool or sit in one of the Adirondack chairs on their little beach, watch the boats go by and marvel at the beautiful moon hovering over downtown Charleston at night. My two days were spent doing just that. Each morning I would walk the few steps to the clubhouse and have an awesome complimentary breakfast by the pool or bring it to my room and eat on the porch and reflect. It was the perfect time to write in my journal and catch up on some much needed rest. I would spend hours in my hammock reading and meditating, walking the trail by the cottages getting lost in the quietness or ride my bike to the snow cone stand down the street. By the time I left, I felt like a new person both inside and out. I would encourage anyone looking for a place to totally unwind, a girl’s weekend (there is a Woodhouse Day Spa close by) or a destination wedding, The Cottages on Charleston Harbor is someplace you seriously need to consider. On their brochure it says, “The Escape You Deserve” and no truer words were spoken. Debbie Martinez is a Miami Dade resident and Travel Editor for The Florida Villager. The Secret to a Successful Family Business BY MITCHELL PANTER, ESQ., PANTER, PANTER & SAMPEDRO, P.A.
W
HEN WE WERE YOUNG WE FOUGHT LIKE CATS AND dogs. We grew up. We went to college together in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We both came home to University of Miami Law School and then got our first jobs on opposite sides of the legal field. I did insurance defense. My brother went right into personal injury. A few years later we joined forces and have been together for more than 25 years. Family Businesses either work or they don’t work. There is
no in between. Wikipedia says that “A family business is a commercial organization in which decision-making is influenced by multiple generations of a family-related by blood or marriage. They are closely identified with the firm through leadership or ownership.” Family business is the oldest and most common model of economic organization. Some of the biggest and most successful organizations are family owned and operated. Yet, these do not exist without strife, turmoil, emotional elements as well as business related issues. When we added our partner, he became part of the family, in all respects. If our children join the firm then we will address those issues which can enrich the firm and strengthen our future. In an article called “7 Tips for a Thriving, Sustainable Family Business That Lasts” it is stated that family businesses account for twothirds of all companies worldwide and create 50 to 80 percent of jobs in most countries. Several of the seven tips include: Get everyone on the same page; clarify Mitchell Panter, Brett Panter, & David Sampedro roles and responsibilities; and separate work and home life. Although these are great tips, reality sometimes sets in and you have to just do your best to be fair, reasonable and honest with your family. We argue, we compromise, we have different viewpoints and ideas. And it is exactly these traits that make it work for us. At the end of the day we are family, we are business people and we run a family business. If you are either in a family business or contemplating starting one you have to start at the beginning. You have to have common goals and ambitions. You have to learn to be respectful of the family values that each of your partners bring to the business and work hard and together. You will find that your family business is the most rewarding when you have partners you can count on, trust and believe in. That’s how it works at Panter, Panter & Sampedro and hopefully for your family business.

UMAN FOOD TRENDS ARE BEING SEEN IN THE PET FOOD MARKET. THE pet food industry is so powerful that it represented $29.5 billion in 2015. Taking advantage of the human trend for “holistic” or “natural” diets, is the emerging market of “designer” or niche pet foods. Many misconceptions about animal nutrition have been propagated as part of their marketing strategies through websites, blogs and other marketing channels. The misconception that corn is bad for pets is perhaps one of the most popular ones. Corn is a staple food item for many people (polenta, tortillas, grits, arepas, etc). Corn was considered to have sacred qualities for many cultures dating back 2000 to 1500 years BC in South, Central and North America. There are more than 100 varieties of corn. They vary by their particular colors and nutritional components, among other factors. With this in mind, let's bust the four most common myths about corn. 1. Corn is a filler grain. Corn contains important nutrients including vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and carbohydrates. In addition, the protein in corn is a vegetable protein which might be easier to digest for your pet than meat proteins. Corn provides health-supportive antioxidant benefits, and an ideal ratio of insoluble to soluble fiber. 2. Grain-free diets (carbohydrate free diets) are a more natural pet diet. Carbohydrates are an essential source of energy. Most grainfree diets lack carbohydrates, and so are higher in fat and calories in order to provide adequate energy levels. This leads to obesity, flatulence, and, in some patients, pancreatitis. Some grain-free diets contain highly refined starches to replace the grains (ex. potatoes, tapioca and cassava) which contain less fiber and nutrients than grains. Additionally, these refined starches increase the overall cost of that pet food. Other grain-free diets replace the grain with beans, peas, and lentils as a carbohydrate source. These sources are not necessarily superior than grains and may lead to gastrointestinal upset in the pet. 3. Grain free diets are less likely to cause allergies. Food allergies are uncommon in pets and represent less than 10 percent of the allergies that affect dogs and cats. Grain allergies are even more rare. Beef, poultry and dairy are the most prevalent food allergens for affected pets. 4. Grains might contain gluten which is bad for pets. Gluten intolerance is an autoimmune disease specific to humans. It is an allergy to the gluten protein in wheat, rye and barley. Gluten intolerance is extremely rare in dogs, and is virtually nonexistent in cats. Grain-free pet diets offer no additional benefits over conventional ones and, in most cases, may have a higher cost. Furthermore, they could facilitate gastrointestinal conditions such as flatulence, soft stool, obesity, and pancreatitis. When deciding on the ideal diet for your pet, do not rely on the presence or absence of a specific ingredient. Instead, focus on the nutrient content of the diet as a whole. Pay attention to the effects of the diet on your pet, such as the consistency and volume of stool, the quality of the coat, and their energy levels while eating the diet long term. When a prescription diet is advised to aid in managing a disease, such as kidney disease or diabetes, consider the overall health benefit of that diet for your pet, as opposed to choosing the diet just because it contains corn or not. Our pets are what they eat. Be smart when choosing their diet. When in doubt ask your pet’s doctor for advice.

Spending 40-plus hours a week at an organization creates the opportunity for your vulnerabilities and at-home issues to find their way into this environment. You and your partner decided to split – what’s next? At its early stages, you are probably learning to cope with the stressors that come with dealing with divorce and are ignoring how it is going to affect your work life. Communication and self-organization is key. Here are some tips to guide you: 1. Let your immediate boss know your situation and ensure them that you will do everything in your power to limit missed time at work. Chances are they have been involved in a divorce in some capacity and will understand that attorney’s schedules aren’t very flexible. 2. If you have a teammate or officemate, you might want to let them in on it since they work closely with you. It’s important that they understand mood shifts, stepping out to take calls, etc. 3. Keep time missed at work to a minimum. Just because you are going through a tough time doesn’t give you the right to inconvenience others by not showing up to work. The last thing you want is the extra complication of a lost job and income. 4. Do not make every conversation with coworkers about your divorce. You need their understanding and support but everyone has a limit; don’t overburden them. Be grateful for the distraction that the workplace brings, but be prudent in what you disclose. Not everyone has good intentions. 5. Continue with a professional demeanor. Keep work, work and personal, personal. If you have divorce papers to fill out, don’t bring them to work. 6. Accept that you will not be as focused or productive at work as usual. To think that there will be no change in your productivity during divorce is unrealistic. Don’t put that kind of pressure on yourself. 7. Take care of yourself. Spend some quiet time doing something that makes you happy. 8. Seek the help of a professional divorce coach. They can help you navigate the process, work through the myriad of emotions, help you stay organized and head off potential problems.
Employer As an employer, you have a responsibility to the company but also to your employee. That can be a difficult balancing act given their emotional state. Divorce will cause distraction, which will cause mistakes, depression will creep in and focus can get lost. Productivity can decrease and they may appear as if they haven’t slept in a week – which sadly, may be the case. How do you balance the welfare of your employee while maintaining the company’s financial spreadsheets? 1. Take the extra time to understand and work with your employee. Ask them what their biggest work challenge is right now and help them strategize solutions. 2. Don’t offer up empty advice. The last thing anyone wants to hear is how lucky he or she was that they didn’t have children with that person. 3. Be aware of office gossip. Don’t let coworkers contribute to this by gossiping at the water cooler. Your goal is to keep your employee at work being as productive as possible and not staying at home because they feel ostracized. 4. Watch for signs of anger towards co-workers that weren’t there before and have honest, non-judgmental conversations with the divorcing employee. 5. Keep an eye open for a loss of confidence on the job and take the time to let them know they had a great idea or did a fabulous report. Whoever came up with the phrase, “This too shall pass,” had to be going through a divorce. This does pass and if the employee and the employer work as a team to help each other out during this transition, everyone stands to benefit.

Visual Skills … (cont.) ease and efficiency. It doesn’t make the muscles stronger but rather “smarter” and more productive. We can use lenses, prisms, filters, occluders, computer programs, electronic targets and other visual-motor devices to improve these skills. The first step is a comprehensive eye exam where you will be evaluated for possible visual skills deficiencies. If there is a need we would perform a developmental eye exam that would evaluate these skills more in depth and provide a report with a plan of action. If you have a question please contact Dr. Lianne Pino at Exceptional Vision Therapy and Learning Center (EVTLC) for a free consultation. Also, consider our summer program which works not only on visuals skills, but also occupational skills needed to succeed in school.. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptom/signs it is important that you get evaluated by an eye care professional, such as a developmental optometrist like Dr. Lianne Pino. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of vision therapy please contact our office for a free consultation with Dr. Lianne Pino at 786-886-7346. You can also learn more at www.evtlc.com.
