HAPPY NEW YEAR Starting off 2017, it's hard not to love being a Floridian. The entire country has been freezing, and here in Central Florida, we've been wealthy with warm weather, good surf, and fish biting. Unlike the cold northern states, our weather is pretty much warm year round, so you can fish or surf virtually any day of the year. When it comes to fishing, we are located in the fishing capital of the world! Florida has over 8,000 miles of shoreline, if you count inlets, bays, and capes. We have the world famous Mosquito Lagoon in our back yard, and just offshore, our coast is home to some of the best big game catches in the world.

Now that it’s a New Year, do you have a game plan and how are you going to become a better you? If there is one word of wisdom we can bestow, focus on the fact that we do live where people vacation. Being outside, one with nature, salt in your bloodlines, creates a better you. Time outside is what makes Florida great. We have all the assets at our fingertips. It is just a matter of taking full advantage. We want to hear more about how you spend your time on the water. Feel free to contact us at info@thefluidmag.com or if you have a great catch that you want to have featured in the next issue, send it to fish@thefluidmag.com. Bryan Forand | Editor

STEPHEN HOLVIK AGE: 40 LIVES IN: NEW SMYRNA BEACH SHOOTING SINCE: 2014

Hi Stephen, where and when was the last image you captured? It was today in my parent’s living room, a picture of my daughter. And when she reads this she'll be mad, because she's totally over me sneaking shots of her, lol. What does a normal day in your life look like? Sex, drugs, rock and roll… I’m just kidding, but a guy can dream, right? Could you give us a little background on how you got into photography? A couple years ago I experienced a series of life changing events and found myself spending a lot of time alone, surrounded by nature. At some point I truly realized how beautiful that nature was and felt compelled to capture it. It became a passion, and I just kept shooting. What inspires you? In a nutshell, light and the way it interacts

16

with the world around us. I'm fascinated with moonlight on water. That's why I started taking photos at night. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to becoming a photographer? There's a lot of people who've helped in some way or another, but I have to give a lot of thanks to New Smyrna in general. There's an incredible local support for the people chasing their passions whether they are artists, athletes, musicians, or entrepreneurs and it's led to some awesome opportunities. What is your favorite place to shoot? Tough question. My pictures say the beach, but I get more excited about the places and subjects I haven't shot yet. Are you a major night owl or what? Seems like a lot of your images are taken at all hours of the night. Haha, yeah I suppose. I had a stretch of insomnia for a while and figured taking photos was a good use of that time. What else is there to do at 3 a.m.?

Are you currently working on any new projects? I have some ideas I want to play with this year, and I've been putting more time into photographing people and even learning the ropes of wedding photography with the help of "Oh So Sweet Studios". My goal is to just keep learning and evolving. Do you have a few tips for aspiring photographers? Not sure what my advice is worth, but what has been good for me is simply taking A LOT of pictures, experiment, press those buttons, mess with the settings, and take as many opportunities as possible to go do just that. I learn something new every time I shoot. Any Last words or shout outs? Definitely need to shout out to my friends and family for their support and the local media like @nsbinlet and, of course, Fluid for the exposure that keeps leading to more opportunities to take photos. That kind of support has been crucial and I greatly appreciate it!

Legends – Stephen “Beaver” Massfeller, Bernie “Mad Dog” Crouch, Clyde Rogers, Rich Murray, Korn, Scott Brill, Jim Morris, Bruce Miller, Ronnie Rannie, Charlie Quick, Bruce Miller, Dave LaMotte, Tommy Partins, Dave Summerlin, Walter Snell, Brian Smith, Dwayne Maki, Bill Naughton, Bobbie Hawkins and Bob Faulk The Crew – Todd Ayers, Mark Ayers, Kimo, Ricky Gehris, Johnny Gehris, Jay Smith, Rod Logan, Stephan Nipple, Ryan Ragan, Rod Mickey Hartman, Jeff Lastinger, Dan Camara, Ayden Every, Todd Chapdelaine, Mike Mote, Marty Goldys, Matt Goldys, Justin Willis, Max Miller, Jamie Thrappas, Jim Grey, Pete Daly, Bernie Boehm, Stan Dorfman, Jimmy Parker, Ron Loudermill, Bob Rob and Pete Bishop. Why we love Daytona Beach – The Ole DB can get mixed reviews sometimes, but we absolutely love it. From Daytona 500 to Bike Week, its flair is hard to top! In the 80's and early nineties, DB was the ultimate spring break destination. With MTV making it their prime time location, the masses flocked to the beaches of Daytona Beach. Although the spring break days have mellowed, there is still so much on tap in the area. From nonstop festivals and events, to the 23 miles of coastline, Daytona Beach will always be a staple for locals and tourists. Local attractions – Daytona always has something going on and takes claim to the title of Festival Capital of Florida for good reason. Make the pilgrimage for one of their large legendary events or visit one of the 50 smaller cultural festivals put on throughout the year. Fall is primetime season for festivals kicking off with the Daytona Blues Festival, Biketoberfest®, Halifax Art Festival, Wings & Waves Airshow, and Turkey Run. Although Fall is primetime, it would be a sin to forget about two of our favorite events, Speedweek and Bike Week.

Photo: Ruddy

History – Daytona Beach is full of rich history, beginning with our native ancestors the Timucuan Indians, Spanish and French settlements, sugar mill plantations and the man who put Florida on the map as a tourist destination, Henry Flagler. The city historically is primarily known for its beach where the hard-packed sandy beaches allows cars to drive on the beach in certain areas. This hardpacked sand, is the primary reason that Daytona Beach has become the mecca for motorsports.

23

Great dining experiences & happy hour honey holes – Daytona Beach is loaded to the gills with good eats. Try out Ocean Deck, Rick’s Surf Bar, Riptides, Mike’s Galley, Mai Tai’s, Zen Bistro, Daytona Taproom, The Cracked Egg, Oyster Pub, Crabby Joe's, Avocado Kitchen, Señor Taco, Ronin, Backyard BBQ, Tia Cori's and McK’s Tavern. As for one of our all time favorite hidden honey holes, our top pick goes to the Glenn and the team at the Festhaus. om s.c

Late night hot spot – The infamous Seabreeze Ave has been stomping ground for ages! Everyone from all corners of Florida have made the trip to experience what Daytona’s Night Life has on tap. If you haven’t had a blackout night on the streets of Seabreeze, than you have a few things to tick off your list! DB neighboring areas, New Smyrna and Ormond, receive tons of attention for their ambience, but you haven’t lived life until you went mad with a crew on the dance floor at Razzle’s.

Photo: Wichofilms.com Photo: Dan Oleary

Best places to stay – Daytona Beach Shores Resort, The Plaza Resort, Hyatt Place, Sun Viking Lodge. There is the random hole in the wall motel on the mainland, if you have a strict budget and not looking for a view. It is worth the extra bucks to stay on beachside. Hear me now, believe me later. Something you probably didn't know about DB – Daytona Beach’s role in the history of civil rights is significant. Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated spring training baseball game with the Montreal Royals, a farm team of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Today Robinson’s name identifies the stadium in Daytona Beach and a life-size statue of him has been cast at the entrance.

Something different – If the beach and the river isn’t your thing, the golfing is pretty stellar in our area. World-class golf awaits you in the Daytona Beach area, one of Florida's fastest growing golf destinations. The area is covered in famous fairways designed by the legends of the sport. Golf Digest recently ranked Daytona Beach in the top 15 places to play in the nation.

Babes and dudes – Due to the fact that there is a solid nightlife, it is a great spot to meet a new friend. The beach from Spring to Fall is pretty epic too. From the mass injection of spring breakers, to the influx of the Orlando crowd, you can pretty much be guaranteed five star eye candy. Daytona Beach tends to bring out a wild side of most of us. Come in, raise hell, go home to rest, and come back another time to do it again.

om s.c

Fisherman's Paradise – Daytona Beach can have an abundance of fish species, in addition it also has tons of variety when it comes to the type of fishing you can partake in. Fishing in Daytona Beach offers the angler unique options to enjoy the sport. Offshore, Inshore, backwater, surf fishing, pier fishing, they have something for everyone and it is all in close proximity. You can salt water fish one day, freshwater the next, and brackish on another day! You really couldn’t ask for anything else.

Photo: Wichofilms.com

Photo: Ruddy

Local knowledge (Insider info) – People come to Daytona Beach wanting to have a good time and get a souvenir that they will always remember. When in Daytona, a new tattoo is customary. There are options out there, but leave it to the guys who’ve set the benchmark. The crew at Tropical Tattoo will get you dialed in and make you a customer for life. These guys are part of Daytona Beach history and have been here since day one. Best time of year – Spring Break is hands down the best time of year to be in Daytona Beach. For locals and tourists alike, one thing remains constant, the beach is everyone’s top priority. College kids load up there car to the rim and make the voyage to the World’s Most Famous Beach. It is all about day drinking, sunburns, and partying the night away. Hazards – The award has to go to all the crazies. For some reason Florida in general has lots of crazy people, but more specific Daytona Beach is like a magnet. With all the nice families that come down from Tennessee and Kentucky, there is also the influx of humans who are out of their mind. We have no idea how people can live on beachside for such a low cost of rent, when everywhere else in the country has high cost living in areas close to the beach. Perhaps this is why we've all come to know it as the 'World’s Most Famous Beach.'

JUSTIN PRICE FISHING GUIDE

F

ishing is a way of life. For Captain Justin Price of Right In Sight Charters, the journey for him started when his family moved to Central Florida in the late 80’s. From that moment on, he soon discovered his passion for saltwater fishing and never looked back. For the past 20 plus years he has been honing his skills in the waterways surrounding the coastline. To make a name for yourself as a guide in this highly competitive market, you need to show results. Captain Price has made quite a name for himself over the past few years, and the proof is in his clientele that continues to come back season after season. Let’s sit down with Captain Price and hear more about his adventures on the waterways.

What has been your most memorable fishing tournament? Guiding wounded veterans to a 1st place finish in a local tournament held to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Foundation, which I guided in 3 years in a row. Taking those vets out for a day on the water to raise money for them was pretty special. I stay away from the tournaments for the most part. It's just not my thing. Occasionally fly fishing events are held locally that I participate in, mainly for the good company and a great time. These fly tournaments are all catchphoto-release formats and are not about money, and the prizes usually consist of art work from local artists.

PHOTOS BY: ANDREW GILBERT

What are three items you never leave the dock without? My camera equipment, fly rod, and passion to do what I love. Who is your favorite person to fish with and why? Wow, that's a tough question. Gonna have to say my family. Both of my kids have been fishing with me since they were in diapers and are now learning to sight fish, which is pretty cool. My wife has a love for the outdoors, and she has a passion for fly fishing as well. And most importantly, she can pole the boat, haha. Can you tell me about how you got into guiding and how you got to where you are today? It was never really a plan, just evolved. After years in the construction industry with my own business I just wanted something different. I started my guide service in 2009 and haven't looked back. It's been a slow process with ups and downs and with lots of stiff local competition. I set out to be a Fly Fishing & Light Tackle Guide but realized the fly clients weren't going to come that easy. I love to fish, but it's not all about fly fishing. A lot of my trips early on were live bait and lure trips until I built up the fly clientele. In the long run it made me more diverse and well-rounded as a guide. Social media became hot shortly after I started guiding and, combined with my love for photography, it helped me to get the exposure. I've been lucky to be featured in a few magazines and on Sport Fishing Television this past year. It's a constant struggle in this

How do you prepare in the week or so leading up to an event? Preparing for any of my charters starts immediately after cleaning up from the last charter. Most people see the highlights of guiding and don't put into perspective the preparation. A lot goes into it; from boat maintenance, cleaning equipment, rigging rods, tying leaders, tying flies, constantly watching the weather, plotting and planning around weather, emails with clients, phone calls with clients, website design, oh yeah and constantly trying to figure out the fish and their next move. What are your thoughts on the algae in the lagoon the past few years. Is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be? This is a tough topic to talk about but will touch on it lightly based what I've experienced around it. I'm not going to sugar coat the issues we have and are facing just to protect my business, but I am also not going to deter people away from experiencing this amazing place. The thought of this place never returning to what it once was is sickening and unimaginable. Science cannot point a figure at just one cause for the blooms but multiple reasons that have created the perfect storm. Due to the lack of title flow to our lagoon system, high levels of nutrients from fertilizers and run off from old septic systems cannot be filtered enough from Ponce Inlet. Also, due to the lack of winter conditions with cooler temps, that would typically kill back normal summer time algae growth, doesn’t help either. Since these algae blooms our Lagoon systems in the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River

Lagoon, and Banana River have lost acres and acres of sea grass, which provide habitats for all marine life and helps to filter our waters. Since the blooms, which started after the freezes in 2010/2011, we have been forced to adapt to the changes and still continue to have great days on the water. Although some days are tough we have still had many days that are great. As a guide I've learned to adapt and refuse to walk away but strive to educate anglers on our fishery on what an amazing place it still is and what we need to do to preserve what we still have. Solutions are in the works, but it will be a long and slow process. The importance of catch and release during these times in our lagoons is more important than ever and cannot be expressed enough! Any last words or people to thank? I'd like to thank my wife Miranda for being supportive on this journey. Clients quickly become friends and I can't thank them enough for their continued support year after year. Thanks to Kevin Fenn and Marc Page, the owners of East Cape Skiffs, for the opportunities they have given me. Thanks to Graham Morton for involving me in the publications of Sport Fishing Magazine and Sport Fishing Television. There are too many to thank from friends and fellow guides that most likely do not know that they've inspired or mentored me to be where I am today and for that I am grateful.

GRANDER RUM Grander Rum is a new boutique craft spirit that has set themselves apart from the others. Forget the overly sweet, flavorless rums out there - Grander is smooth, complex, and worthy of connoisseurs looking to enjoy the finer things in life. This smooth, spicy rum is the brainchild of Dan DeHart, a Kentucky native, who was influenced by Bourbon culture to create a drink that brings rum drinking to the next level. The commitment to quality and that special something is not only evidence in the flavor but also the name. The brand is named after the word “grander”, which is a term used to describe the elusive marlin weighing more than a 1,000 pounds. Like history’s great anglers, the creators of Grander Rum have charted their own course in search of an elusive prize.

If you'd like to experience Grander, try these cocktails at our local favorites: • Russo's revenge at the Bounty bar at Flagler Tavern • Strawberry Paloma and Grander Old Fashioned at Outriggers Tiki Bar and Grille • And a nice stiff drink at Merk's Bar and Grill Or pick up a bottle of Grander Rum at Total Wine.

FLUID SOCIAL SPOTLIGHT

Social media has paved the way for a new level of interaction. One such platform for doing so has been Instagram, a wildly-popular photo-sharing app that was bought up by Facebook for $1 billion way back in 2012. At the time, naysayers doubted the move. However, with 400 million active users in 2016 and what's turning into a clear strategy for advertising through promoted or sponsored posts, the once-outrageous deal is now being lauded and celebrated. Yet, with this type of popularity there's a sense of information overload. Who are you supposed to follow? Let us help you by sharing just a few of our favorite handles in Central Florida!

With knowing this you deserve a clean car that is going to keep you motivated, organized, and ready for the week. Turn to Splash Car Wash, located in Port Orange, for all your car wash needs. Their friendly, professional staff will get you in and out and take excellent car of you and your car. When you pull up, you will be introduced to the well oiled machine that is Splash Car Wash. Immediately you will be greeted by their organized, efficient, and knowledgeable staff. No matter what you are looking for, from quick washes, waxes, and inside out detailing, Splash Car Wash has you covered. While waiting for your car to be cleaned, you will have the luxury of waiting in a clean, comfortable space. Best of all, they are committed to supporting and helping the community. When it comes to supporting local businesses, it starts with the owner, and continues with the employees. Splash is one business we are proud to support. Torrey Medina, owner of Splash, is an amazing person, who our community is fortunate to have amongst us. Let's hear more from Torrey about Splash.

Keeping a good coat of our Blue Coral wax on your vehicle regularly will actually keep your vehicle cleaner between visits as the rain and grime slides right off the cars finish. We offer hand wax services while you wait to get you in and out quickly in our express detail tent.

Thanks for sitting down with us Torrey, what separates Splash from other Car Washes? Our attention to detail is second to none, however that extra attention requires a little extra time so Splash provides one of the most comfortable waiting areas of any car wash in Central Florida, complete with top grade coffee and Ritters smoothies. This allows our customers to relax while we put that extra special touch in detailing their vehicles. But, for those in a hurry we offer express services to get our customers in and out in a splash! Volusia County has grown tremendously, have you seen an increase in business that last few years? We have been consistently growing each year particularly in our express exterior lane where our customers stay in their vehicles as they ride through our tunnel and enjoy the light show! We added a self pay station this year to really speed up the process for the express exterior lane. Any tips to keep the car clean in between visits to your shop?

We know you are really committed to the community. Can you elaborate on how Splash stays involved and helps out? We offer local organizations the opportunity to do fundraisers using our facility to make the process painless and rewarding to the organization. Which package would you recommend for all of us beach-goers when we stop by the shop? Our most popular package is the Platinum wash with Extreme shine applied right in our tunnel. This package gives you a quick and thorough cleaning of your car inside and out. Any last words or shout outs? We appreciate our customers loyalty and are always looking for ways to show it. Be sure to sign up for our monthly specials and free birthday car wash on our website or at the wash. We also love to know how we are doing so please take the time to tell us on your next visit. We have a convenient iPad in the Lobby, so customers can share their views with us. www.mysplashcarwash.com 901 Dunlawton Ave. Port Orange, FL 32127 | (386) 761-8550

Reeling into 2017, expect the Reds to be swimming in larger schools, grazing shallow grass flats looking for shrimp or any other bottom dwelling organism. Until we see colder weather you can still lock into a few tarpon around the bridges. Once the weather drops we will see the water clear up in the lagoon. Most anglers have seen redfish beginning to school up, but the larger Reds still tend to roam alone. With the cooler temperatures approaching, it is going to be tough to find the elusive snook. In the river and around the jetties, you are likely to hook into bluefish, reds, flounder, trout, mangroves, & sheepshead.

Weather wise it has been a very mild winter thus far, no complaints here! With a slight rise in water temperatures this winter, our coast is prime for the picking in the months to come. We still have seen a few boats pulling up sizable wahoo. If you can handle the tougher seas of January and February, it is prime time for bottom fishing. Fish are moving offshore to spawn. At near-shore wrecks we will see an influx of flounder. In addition to the flounder, the bite will be hot for a variety of species including; black sea bass, sheepshead, and red snapper. Keep your lines tight and put in some extra time on the water in 2017.

TALK STORY: Bernie "Mad Dog" Crouch The name Bernie “Mad Dog” Crouch is synonymous with Ponce Inlet. For over 40 years, Bernie has been one of the most influential surfboard builders in our area. Volusia County has changed tremendously over the years, but nothing about Crouch has altered. Known as Mad Dog to many, Bernie has a reputation of not taking any s*** from anyone. With that being said, there is so much about him that people don’t know. I heard the stories growing up, and yeah they put the fear of god in me, but what stands out the most is how Bernie treats the people closest to him and his family. One prime example is at a certain point break in Central America. We won’t go into detail on the location, but, at this particular spot, Bernie has been instrumental to the surf community. These kids at this small community in Central America, although it's poverty stricken, contains some of the most kind and amazing people this world has to offer. Bernie has become close friends with all the members and has been gracious enough to bring close to one-hundred boards down there over the years to donate to the surf community. Very little people know about this huge gesture of kindness, but we have to say that no good deed goes unseen. Hands down an absolute legend, who inspires us on a daily basis, and to this day still rips in the water. Let’s hear more about what makes Bernie tick.

What motto do you live by, if any? Travel, explore, enjoy life and family. It goes by fast. How long have you been shaping? A long time, let me see, since the early 70’s. Do the math…… What was it like in the 70’s being a surfer in our area? Really Good. No crowds, no condos, great sand dunes. Too many stories to tell. If you can go back 40 years what advice would you give yourself? Should have stayed where the surf was… in HAWAII. What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the Ponce Inlet area? There where no rules like there is now. We regulated ourselves. Guys looked out for each other and if someone got out of line, they were called out and kicked out. There was more respect then, then there is now. It’s a free-for-all surfing at Ponce. It’s dangerous and nobody has respect for each other. There’s so much more I could say, but won’t… What was the pinnacle of your surfboard shaping career? I would like to think that I haven’t reached

it yet. I am always innovating new designs and always trying to progress with my shapes and to advance the progression for the guys riding them. I suppose that’s why I specialize in custom boards for guys. Everyone is different in their approach to surfing and what they want and need. Guys that have been surfing a while can’t always get what they want from a stock board. I suppose the highlights in my shaping career have been when I got to work with the most iconic shaper of all times, Harold Ige, and other shapers such as, George Miller, Mike Diffenderfer, Ben Aipa, Eric Arakawa, Glenn Minami, Carmen Irving, just to name a few… What is our youth lacking? Ow, where do I start? There are a lot of good kids out there and a bunch that have gone off track. They need to get off their phones and text less. Try talking. Get a job. Learn that everything has a value, and that goes for people as well as things. So, respect one another, especially your parents. Less is More… What is the best traveling experience in your life? Every trip I take I make it the best experience, even if the surf is no good. But, if I have to think of one it would be in 1989 when I was on my way to Australia. I stopped over in Hawaii for a few days and met my wife, Rita. That has to be the best. Photos: Courtesy of Mad Dog
