NEW HORIZONS Being a surfer creates a bond with friends that's hard to describe. I've been infatuated with surfing since I was around 12 years old (that's a long ass time ago, I'm old), with the same best friends for the entire time. It’s pretty crazy. Sometimes I wonder if we all didn't surf, would we have stayed this close? Would we see each other as frequently as we do? I think my life would be on a totally different course if I didn't surf. It's also had a major influence on my life in the form of several stints in the industry. And over the years I’ve spent lots of money traveling to exotic locales where I feel my free time is well spent. As I look at this image of two friends having a chat at sunrise, it’s what life is all about at this point, outside of my family of course. The only time that makes sense for me to surf is super early or late in the afternoon. I don't want to put a huge burden on Nicole (my wife) all the time, and I love to spend time with my kids Noah and Liam. Don't get me wrong, I definitely get out throughout the midday hours as well, but

I've made it a big point to be a weekend warrior that's up super early no matter what. Feels good grinding it out with the boys, bumping elbows, trying to get a couple no matter what the circumstances are. Big, small, choppy, or epic, always trying to stay psyched. We're all driven to the ocean for different reasons. My parents sailed all around the world. They were passionate about being on the water, and it rubbed off on my brother and I. Going into 2020, make it a point to spend more time on the water. Find little windows, Sunday late afternoon or before work on the random weekday. It’s time that you won't regret. What makes it even better is spending it with the right company, because positivity can be hard to come by but goes a long way. Words: Bryan Forand - Editor

Age: 21 Where do you live? Ponce Inlet, FL Originally from? Orlando, FL Occupation? I work at Salty Dog Surf Shop! Where would your dream trip take you? A surf trip to the Mentawais has been on my bucket list for a while! Tell us something about you that might surprise us? Umm… a lot of people are surprised when I put on my heavy metal music hahaha! How many times a day do you use social media (tell us the truth)? I probably go on Instagram a couple times a day but to be honest I use Pinterest like every hour hahahah. If you were a skittle, what color would you be and why? This is probably the question I struggled with the most, but I’d say probably yellow because I love the color yellow and the sun hahaha… I don’t really know a good answer. When you listen to music, do you pay attention to lyrics or the melodies and beats? Lyrics mostly, unless it’s heavy metal because then I mostly listen to the beats, like when I’m working out and stuff. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I think the best part of modeling (even in the little that I do) is meeting new friends and making connections with people and photographers you otherwise probably wouldn’t talk to or approach. It’s led me to some of my best friends! Real Housewives or Sunday Night Football? Football for sure. My family is all from Boston so they’re huge Patriots fans which makes game nights very eventful. Got a boyfriend? Not at the moment. Worst Pickup Line? It’s not really a pickup line but I hate when people say they, “Have faith in me.” It’s gotten very old. Most important thing on a first date? I think all first dates go very differently haha, but I hate when boys try to impress too much or say things like, “I got the check so get whatever you want.” Like, I’d most likely order what I wanted even if I was paying. I don’t know, that just makes me cringe. If you had to live in another state besides Florida, which state would you choose and why? I really love Florida but if I had to choose another state, I’d probably pick California just because I feel like they have warm weather and good waves, even though it’s far from my family on the East Coast. Best Beach in Florida? I’m pretty biased, but Ponce! Favorite celebrity? Hailey Baldwin! Her style is everything and she’s just so naturally beautiful. Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? Can I say none? I just like well-rounded boys hahaha, no matter their hobby. I love Fluid magazine because? They promote the small businesses in the community and bring everyone together! What does the future hold for the lovely Faith? I’ll probably try to finish my marine biology degree in the next year or so, and then hopefully find a sick job on a boat somewhere doing research!

There is a new addition to New Smyrna Beach, and we at Fluid Mag couldn't be more thrilled! Culinary guru Chris Parsons recently opened General Public House, located in downtown NSB off of Canal Street. This Southern Inspired concept does a tremendous job of making you feel like it's your home away from home. It has the perfect combination; a large variety of delicious food options, a staff that genuinely seemed to enjoy their job (aka excellent service), a great atmosphere and an endless supply of extraordinary drink options. The General Public House focuses heavily on providing top notch drink options featuring a large variety of bourbons, whiskeys and craft beers. The menu truly has something for everyone, but if we had to point you in a direction, we would recommend the Public House Redfish, Tomahawk Pork Chop, Honey Fried Chicken or Shrimp & Grits. Recently we sat down with Chris to hear more about his new location and what to expect in the future.

Congrats on the new location in New Smyrna Beach. We love the new setup and southern inspired menu. How's the response been so far? It’s been really busy man... the local support and following has been amazing. It’s super humbling to have such a warm

reception into this community. New Smyrna Beach has been a second home to me my entire life, and I could not be more appreciative of the love and support I’ve gotten from day one here. This is my favorite place on earth and the people are a huge part of that. Chris, you have an insane amount of experience in the culinary world! You're obviously passionate about the industry. How did you come up with the concept for General Public House? I wanted to create a concept that wasn't like every other cookie cutter restaurant operation. I spent a lot of time working for some larger corporations, and what I noticed was that a lot of quality was compromised in the name of profit. I got into this industry because of a passion for food and people, and I knew the way to truly reach people was by providing something special and doing so at a value. I worked very hard, assembled what I feel is an all-star team, and leveraged a lot of professional contacts and relationships to make this concept a reality. We put our time and effort into doing what we know (Classic Southern Fare/Contemporary American Cuisine), and focused an elaborate amount of attention on the fine details that most operations miss on or never think of. The end result is an Upscale Southern/Farm to Table establishment, led by an independent owner, dedicated to making a difference in the communities in which we reside.

When someone visits your restaurant for the first time, what do you want them to take from the experience? I want every guest to feel like the most important person we are serving that day. I truly believe that genuine hospitality, great food and beverage, and value are the hallmarks for a great operation. Our standards are second to none. Simply put, we care, and that can be felt in everything we do. We love the feel of the place and the vibe. How would you describe the atmosphere at General Public House? We wanted to create a space that was warm and inviting. The rustic decor and ambient lighting sets a comfortable, laid back vibe. Antique barn wood adorns the walls and bar, whitewashed, exposed brick coupled with live plants and string lights finish the space. You can see and feel the attention to detail the moment you walk in, from the solid white oak floors, to the hand-crafted ceiling tiles. Large booth seating, traditional table seating, as well as high top tables make up the dining room. It feels like home.

Any last words or shout outs? There are so many people that have been crucial in getting us to where we are, so I just want to take a second to thank my friends and family who have been beyond supportive. It means more to me than you will ever know! The members of my Executive Team, Dirk Griffin, Chef Brandon Hervey, Chad & Tam Schilsky, Scott Card, Kegan Sidders, Dustin Remp, and Shana Bedford. My entire Winter Springs staff for all their hard work and relentless pursuit of being the best. 1 | Start with your back and hips flat on the ground with your head in a neutral position. Bring your legs to 90 degrees and place a light medicine ball on top of your legs. Focus on keeping your core engaged and maintaining your legs at 90 degrees. Crunch up and tap the right side of the ball with your right hand, then return to starting position. Then tap the left side of the ball with your left hand, and return to starting position. Next touch the top of the ball with both hands. Do ten taps in each position and those abs with be feeling good!

2 | Start in a push-up plank position with you hands directly under your shoulders. Belly button drawn to your spine and leg muscles fully engaged. When you start to pike, drive your hips as high as flexibility will allow. Maintain your arms in the correct position and keep your legs as straight as possible. Slowly bring the hips back to a neutral position. Repeat ten times. This is a challenging core exercise that is also great for strengthening your lower back.

At fifteen years old and already 6’3” tall, Ryan Huckabee is an up and coming Flagler Beach surfer who is proving himself difficult to overlook both in and out of the water. While traditional surfing wisdom may view such stature as a disadvantage, one needs only to look at the WCT ranks to find surfers like Owen Wright, Jordy Smith, and John John Florence using their long frames to help them rise to the top of the surfing world. As a member of the USA Surfing National Junior Team, Ryan is already turning heads in the sport’s competitive arenas. With the support of his sponsors and the tight knit Flagler Beach surfing community behind him, he is poised to make his mark on the surfing world.

Do you do any form of training or just rock up and rip? I work out quite a bit and surf as much as I can.

Tell us something that most people don't know about you? I’m pretty good at basketball, or at least I think so haha.

Is your focus more on surfing contest or free surfing? I really enjoy both, but I would say I’m more focused on contest surfing.

What was your favorite thing about growing up surfing the playground known as Flagler Beach? I think my favorite part is I always had older kids to look up to when I was younger and I think it really pushed my surfing.

Best and worst part about living in Flagler Beach? The best part is how we have such a tight knit surf community, and I guess the worst part is sometimes we get some pretty bad flat spells.

Who is someone you've always looked up to in our surf community? I’ve always looked up to how Robbie McCormick surfs since I was really young. I still remember being amazed watching him surf when I was like 5 or 6 at Jimmy Blumenfeld’s surf camp.

Favorite place to eat in your home town? I don’t really eat out a lot but Oceanside is really good.

Best surf trip you've been on? I’ve been on a few really insane trips, but some of the coolest places I’ve been are on the east coast, like Canada and New England.

You are currently on the USA Surfing National Junior Team, which is super legit and prestigious, well done Ryan! Can you tell us about the process and what it means to be part of the team? Only 12 total surfers representing the USA, correct? So there are actually 8 people for each division on the US surf team (boys u16, boys u18, girls u16, girls u18), and they pick three from each division to represent the US surf team at ISA Jr Worlds. I had the honor of representing the team at Worlds this year. It was a super fun time and we took home the gold!

Any travel plans over the next few months? I actually just went on a trip to Canada which was really fun and really different than anything I’ve ever done, and I’m going to Hawaii at the end of January.

PEYTON WILLARD channels would repost my shots and would showcase them on TV. I did this for a while, until I met my friend Andrew Lands. He was a surfer and asked me to shoot him one day two years ago. I had never shot a surfer in my life. It was all extremely foreign to me, but I went and shot and was hooked. Ever since that day, I’ve been obsessed with it.

Age: 16 years old Lives in: St. Augustine, Florida Shooting since: I’ve been shooting surfing for two years. Hi Peyton, where and when was the last image you captured? The last shot I took was in Central Florida at RCs on Sunday (12/1/19) during our last swell. What type of equipment do you use? As of right now, I shoot with a Sony A6000 body. For land shots, I use my Sony 200-600mm. I love this lens so much. For in water shots, I use an Aquatech water housing with a Sony 50mm f1.8, aka the nifty fifty! What's a normal day in your life look like? Hmmm, it really depends on the time of year. During football season, I would shoot in the morning before school, then go to weightlifting, then come back home and homeschool all day until football practice. During football season, my life is 99% dedicated to football, so I have very little time to shoot. During the off season, I homeschool when there is no swell and when a swell comes, I’m shooting as much as possible. We saw something you posted about waking up at 6am & riding 10 miles round-trip on your bicycle to shoot images all day with your water housing. You seem like a throwback to the good ole days, just a hard-working kid! Where did you get this amazing work ethic from? All very true! I get my work ethic from my parents. They own their own business and my mom homeschools me and my brother, so they are always working hard. Another thing that developed my worth ethic is sports. I used to do Tae Kwon Do for 11 years and now I play football. If you don’t have a good work ethic in football, you can expect to be sitting on the bench all Friday night! Give us a little background on how you got into photography? Well it all started when I was about seven years old. I was very into Meteorology and my mom had a camera, so I started taking pictures of storms, clouds, etc. This eventually evolved into something greater. When I was 13, the local news

What inspires you? What inspires me is the future. I want to shoot with major brands and for the WSL CT events. Some photographers that inspire me include Ryan Miller and Jimmy Wilson since they are both from St. Augustine too. Give us three words that describes your photography? I can only think of two words; Always Improving. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photog? The person that probably helped me the most to get my name out there is Tory Strange. He is the owner of The Surf Station. He started reposting my shots on the Surf Station Instagram and let me write surf blogs on his site. Also, my parents for taking me everywhere I needed to go to shoot and always supporting me. What is your favorite place to shoot? The answer to this question changes a lot, mostly because I haven’t been to many places to shoot outside of Northeast Florida. My favorite place though would likely be New Smyrna Beach. The surfers there are so nice and there is always a wave there. What do you enjoy the most about being a photographer in our area? The thing I enjoy most is how many amazing surfers there are locally. The lineup always seems to be stacked when a good swell pushes in. Do you have a few tips for other young aspiring photographers? Yes! When you shoot, always find unique angles. People love shots that are different. Also, never give up shooting, especially after having a bad session. Every surf photographer has had bad surf sessions, you just have to learn from your mistakes and improve! Any Last words or shout outs? I would like to thank everyone that has stuck with me and given me a chance to shoot with them. I’ve made so many friends along the way and wouldn’t change a thing from my past two years of surf photography! I would also like to thank Fluid Magazine for featuring me.

FISHING REPORT Knowledge of our breeder/red drum Happy New Year everyone! I hope this year is a prosperous one for all. The last few months and into this month of January, we have had very few cold fronts coming through. The water clarity is getting a bit better due to some of the cooler weather. As you know, winter in the flats and back country is not defined by any specific date but rather by the temperature difference from the passing cold fronts. Temperature changes of a few degrees can affect species targeted and the methods used. Fishing in the Lagoon has been pretty fruitful, and you may even find yourself reeling in those "grand slams" of Snook, Trout, and Redfish that you work so hard for in the heat of Summer. I'm also still seeing Tarpon in the far south of the Lagoon. Where are the fish hanging and what baits to use, you ask? Before heading to the back country, I stop to fish nearby docks and bridges, and have been finding Snook, Redfish and Trout by the dozens! Depending on how fast the tide is ripping, I’ll freeline a shrimp or toss on a split shot. With the cooler water temps Snook have found themselves schooled up in their winter hangouts, and you can land these beauties by the dozen right now. Due to them being schooled up, the size of the Snook you land will vary. Simply free lining a live shrimp or working a soft plastic, a DOA 3'' Shad Tail or '3" paddle tail is my preferred method. Snook, Redfish, and Trout can’t resist these soft plastics. Where you can find cooler water in the Lagoon, you can find Trout! You will find them up in the shallower water where the temperatures are warmer, basking in sand holes and grass patches. Using a soft plastic on a weedless hook, retrieving it back slowly with a pop and sink pop action, small top waters, as well as popping corks and live shrimp are all great baits to use when targeting Trout. Due to the wind, wind and well, more wind, it stirs up the muck and makes the water dirty and the water clarity poor. So, it has been a little more challenging sight-casting for those elusive Redfish here in the flats. Some days you will find yourself having to watch for pushing wake and tailing Reds. I find that days like these in the lagoon are much more successful when free lining a live jumbo shrimp. They love the sun and warmer water, making it easier to find them schooled up against the mangroves in the grassy flats and sand holes in the shallow

parts of the Lagoon. Again, you just can’t go wrong with a soft plastic DOA 3" shad tail or 3" paddle tail rigged with a weedless hook.. Depending on the grass and water depth I use a 1/8 to a 1/16 oz, or just free line a large live shrimp. This is the time of the year I have most my success using a live jumbo shrimp! We might as well take advantage of using those big guys while they are here. This cooler weather pushes in all the jumbo and select shrimp, which make for great bait! January and February are the best months to find those big black drum, especially if you have access to those super skinny-water spots and "no motor zones." It a beautiful sight seeing these beauties tailing across the grassy flats, which is one of the many reasons why I love my Kayak! Using shrimp and fresh blue crabs are a preferred bait of choice when targeting Black Drum, but if presented properly, they will hit an artificial. You may find more success on hits and landing fish by the proper use of your artificial and color choice. If the water is more clear and cleaner, a white to natural color with flash. If the water is dark and dirty, I suggest going for a natural darker pattern. Mosquito Lagoon water levels and clarity With cool fronts coming in and temps not being as warm, the water clarity is looking much better in the lagoon. Depending on where you are targeting fish and due to wind, you will find it hard to sight-cast in certain areas. With a lot of time scouting the lagoon these last couple months searching for grass, between the wind, fall weather, cooler temperatures and random cold fronts, I have found myself discouraged in mucky, dirty water with no grass and red fish scattered here and there. But with the help of North winds and cooler weather pushing water out of the Lagoon making way for cooler, gin clear water clarity, things are looking up! It’s a new year and many great things to come so get out there and make this year an epic one!! Keys to a successful fishing trip: *fish shallow ends, sand holes, and grassy flats where the water is warmer. *when using artificial baits, select the proper color choices and weight for the water clarity and depth *due to the weather temp changes and targeted species (what they are feeding on may change that day) you can’t go wrong having live and artificial baits on board! *Try not to get discouraged or give up, they are out there! Scout till you find that school or reel in just that one, happy fishing!

It's hard to find a friend like Joe Surbaugh. My crew of friends (NBK) are all around 10 years and some change younger than Surbaugh and his generation (ODB). We thought the world of those guys when we were growing up. They were basically gods to us. They were pro surfers and we were these wise-ass little groms who were always trying to hitch a ride to the beach and crash their parties. Good news for us, they completely embraced us and made us part of their group. He's always been there for me, and we've had some epic times together on surf and snowboard trips over the years. Joe and I have always had a special bond, from him giving me

advice on buying my first home to hiring me part time to be his sub-rep for ...Lost. I'll never forget the whole buying a house ordeal. I was around 22 years old and barely could pay my bills, and he would tell me firmly (aka scream at me all Surbaugh style), â&#x20AC;&#x153;Buy a house B!â&#x20AC;? Every time I saw him that year, he would give me shit, punching me and hassling me, saying stuff like, "You buy a house yet barney?!" I listened to him and bought my first home a short time after. He's always been that guy that seems all tough and whatnot, but he cares so much about his family and friends. A true stand-up guy. Like I said, it's hard to find friends like Joe!

How long have you been surfing for? 47 years What was it like in 80's being a surfer in our area? Fun and better sandbars. The Inlet changed as soon as they filled in Ponce Rocks.

Back when I was a grom, you and the NSB Inlet crew had The Inlet on lock. It's a totally different world down there now! What do you miss the most about the good ole days? The waves, the regulation in the lineup, and being able to drive down to the inlet at any tide in The Weapon. Who were the top guys at the inlet back in those days? Terrible, Luey, Big R, Facial, JL, JJ, The Sheriff, CB, Zilla, CDog, Conklin, Bucky, Pap, Guzman, Jeff Buehler, Old Man Kelly, Brillbait, Mad Dog, Jetman, RP, McKenzie, Mike Watson, Gary and Randy Schwoerer all pretty much dominated the lineup. Then the younger locals and Daytona crew started showing up daily around 84-85 + era- Maki, Nester, Doppler, Magoo, Lil Bastard, GG, Chunks, Duffy, Jimmy Parker, Bryan Smith, Todd and Mark Ayers to name a few. If you can go back 30-35 years what advice would you give yourself? Travel more! What is our youth lacking? Tough to say as it seems the kids today got it made, and anything they need to find out is right at their fingertips instantaneously. What is the best traveling experience of your life?
