EDITOR'S NOTE

COAST INTO SUMMER Has this year really flown by this fast or what?! It’s already summertime, and we are in the thick of it! The heat is unbearable and, no doubt, so are the masses. Our little beach towns keep getting more crowded and congested by the minute and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Everywhere we look there is some type of new construction, annoying stoplights, and constant traffic that fills each crevice of our coastal towns in Central Florida. At times if feels like we are a magnet and all the forces are blasting in our direction. The walls are caving in on our little slice of heaven, and it becomes harder to spread our wings and have room to flow. What can you do? When something is enjoyable, people gravitate towards it.

Regardless of all the unnecessary growth, we have it pretty good. You have to remember, we live where people vacation. Unlike the cold northern states, our weather is pretty much warm year round, so you can surf, fish, and spend time on the water virtually any day of the year. We have rivers, lakes and beaches everywhere we look, and bests of all, we live in boardshorts and bikinis (when we aren't grinding a nine to fiver). That alone should keep the positive vibes flowing and peace signs plentiful. This time of year the days are long and the nights are longer, get out and enjoy the summer! Make sure to never forget how lucky we are to live in this place we call home. Most importantly, get out on the water today! Bryan Forand | Editor

MISS SUNSHINE

ALENA LEWIS 18 YEARS

Where do you live? Titusville, FL Originally from? Titusville, been here all my life! Occupation? I'm a server at Sonnys BBQ. Where would your dream trip take you? Hawaii or somewhere very tropical where I would literally stay in a bathing suit all day, every day. What do you enjoy the most about modeling? I love how I get to express myself and then the best feeling is when the photographer says a compliment. Then you just feel so good. How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Ok, honestly when I'm not working I literally check up on it like at least every 15 minutes… I know, I'm bad. If you were a skittle, what color would you be and why?

The tealish blue one in the tropical packet, because that's my favorite color and it’s not as basic as the rest. Real House Wife's or Sunday Night Football? Hmmm... I don't really watch TV at all. I guess I would say Real House Wife's, even though I feel like it would get a little too dramatic. Got a boyfriend? Nope. I have never had a boyfriend, actually. Worst Pickup Line? Hey my name is ____, but you can call me anytime. Most important thing on a first date? I would say making a good impression, like being able to make me laugh and hold the conversation without making things get awkward and quiet. If you had to live in another state besides Florida, which state would you choose & why?

California! It seems so cool and there's always stuff going on. On top of that, there are beaches and good weather, which is a very important factor. Best Beach in Florida? New Smyrna Beach! Favorite celebrity? Justin Bieber all the way Who’s the hottest-Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarders, Musicians or Artists? Surfers! They just have that look and nice bodies with the good tan! I love Fluid magazine because ? It has so much to offer and always posts to keep me updated! What does the future hold for the lovely Alena? I'm honestly not sure… College, and hopefully I will be out there modeling in the big world some day.

Photographer:

NATE HARRINGTON Shooting since: 2002 Age: 30

Hi Nate, where and when was the last image you captured? It was in Barbados, this morning, with Dave Speir on a bomb. How was Barbados? Did you all get some surf? We got consistent surf that let us do what we needed to do! That’s always awesome on a surf trip, and I scored the last morning I was there. It was really, really hard to leave when the surf was pumping! What's a normal day in your life look like? Ah man, what season is it? I do a lot of photography so it’s a lot of editing and trying to figure out how to make outlets for my work. Honestly, it’s a lot of time behind a computer. If there’s surf, I’m shooting. If there’s no wind and it’s clear, I’m trying to freedive when I get the time, and just relentlessly search for more ways to do the things I love, like photography and being outside. Give us a little background on how you got into photography. It seemed to be a clever way to get into a snowboard camp. I ended up shooting more photos than snowboarding, however, and it kinda all started there.

What was your very first picture that ever got published? Snowboarding photo, Jordan Michelot doing a 50-50 on a Down Flat Kink Down rail in Minneapolis, MN. It must have been '03 or ’04. It was a full page in Stuck Mag, a midwest snowboarding and skateboarding mag. It was old school and it was rad. What inspires you? Being outside and being in the water. Just doing it ourselves. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photographer? There’s been a lot of people… All the athletes I work with. Chauncey Robinson has been an amazing person

to shoot with the past few years. I feel like his surfing and my photography have kinda been accelerating at a good pace, kinda helping each other out a lot. That and he introduced me to all of Florida. The Glenn’s are awesome brothers who inspire me a lot. They never want to stop surfing. Trevor Graves, Andy Wright, and Scott Serfas have always been huge inspirations and help. Work worthy of a check out. What is your favorite place to shoot? In a broad perspective, Florida. I love shooting here because it just feels good to get shots at home. Do you have any nightmare stories to tell which have happened while you were at work? (losing cams in the water, hold downs, robberies, airport fees cause of overweight, etc) I flooded a 50d one time. Oops. Caroline Marks didn’t get any shots that day. Otherwise, no stories other than positive ones. Are you currently working on any new projects? I sort of am working on a few. I’m trying to figure out what to publish for a gallery I would like to show this year, and I’m working on some ideas for a lifestyle publication. It’s something I would really like to see happen. I hope to find ways to show more peoples’ work in a creative environment. There’s just too many good shots to not have them in print somewhere. Do you have a few tips for aspiring surf photographers? Keep working and do not do shoots for free. Any Last words or shout outs? Ahh jeez, well, I love SunBum. Company with good vibes. Shoutout to Blake Speir for that Bowl Barrel you got this morning, still thinking about it..

NSB BAGELS & BURRITO BAR Photos: PATRICK RUDDY

Summer is upon us and it’s time for the beach, barrels, bagels and burritos? Yes, bagels and burritos is right! NSB Bagels & Burrito Bar (formerly Bagel World) has a spot close to our hearts….and our stomachs. The local support for this spot is amazing and completely understandable. NSB Bagels and Burrito Bar has been an institution in New Smyrna for years and is the place to stop by and grab breakfast or lunch when you are on beachside. From classic cream cheese to a full on bagel sandwich loaded to the gills, it's guaranteed they have what your heart desires. Best of all, their food is served up by a friendly and welcoming staff. There are very few places that can stand the test of time and be a favorite of tourists and locals alike. But, even a classic has to keep it fresh, and NSB Bagels and Burrito Bar new owners are committed to just that! They have kept the same bagels we all love and now are offering burritos and tacos that live up to the same fanfare their bagels do. Also, now you can enjoy a cold brew from the outdoor porch. So before you post your beach selfie, treat yourself and fuel up at NSB Bagels and Burrito Bar! You won’t regret it. 819 SR-A1A New Smyrna Beach, Florida (386) 427-1600

SHOOT LIKE A PRO TIPS TO HELP YOU GET YOUR SURF-PHOTO GAME IN FOCUS In today’s highly competitive world of surf photography, standing out means never standing still. The life of a surf photographer means keeping up with the latest surf action across geographic borders, time zones, and cultural barriers. It means working from the road and meeting deadlines on little to no sleep, then waking up to do it all over again the next day. So what’s it like being on the road and what kind of equipment do you need? Patrick Ruddy, photo editor of Fluid and professional surf photographer, opens his bags for us:

P-RUDD'S GEAR: 1. Viper fins - Still the fastest fin you're gonna find. 2. Canon 1D Mark IV - This camera shoots 10.5 fps (frames per second). This is a must have feature for any serious action photographer. 3. Canon 5D with 24mm lens - Great for candids.

8. Canon 70 - 200 f/2.8 - This is probably my most used and only zoom lens in my bag, this lens offers the perfect range for pulling back and shooting foreground photos. 9. Canon 50mm f/ 1.8 - Perfect all around lens to shoot water photos.

4. Del Mar Water Housing - I can pretty much shoot any lens in my bag with this one housing. This rig is set up for fisheye, a lens I love to shoot, but I encourage beginners to start with a 50mm in the water.

10. Tokina 10-17 fisheye - This lens is not as good as the original canon 15mm, but it gets the job done.

5. LaCie Rugged hard drive - Always back everything up.

12. Pillow from home - Helps me get comfortable anywhere.

6. Towel - Clean dry towels are gold on trips.

13. 1610 Pelican Case - Deep and waterproof.

7. Canon 500mm f/4 - This lens took years to master, but the rewards are worth the wait.

14. Apple Laptop - Must have for any traveling photographer.

11. Dakine photo bag - Best in the game.

LOCAL PROFILE - FISHING GUIDE

@jrod_tuttle

FISHING GUIDE: CAPT.

JARROD TUTTLE

D R I F T W O O D C H A RTE R S In most cases, charter captains either focus their time and efforts on offshore or inshore. Captain Jarrod Tuttle isn’t your average captain, and his love for both options has resulted in offering charted tours for both the offshore lovers and inshore enthusiast. Captain Tuttle has been navigating our waters for over 20 years, and is an expert on the local waterways and vast fish species. Thanks to his grandpa, he developed a love for fishing at the young age of 4. After lots of hard work and determination, he received his 6-Pack Captain's License at the age of 20, and later upgraded to a 100-Ton Master Captain's License at the age of 23. Let’s just say he is very motivated to spend his valuable time on the water. Captain Tuttle spent many years working on Supply Vessels, both Internationally and Domestically, and on his time off would fish the waters of his home town. Today, he dedicates all of his time to fishing locally around our area. With a wealth of historical knowledge and of the surrounding area, you can be rest assured that your experience with Captain Tuttle will not only be an Old Florida adventure, but also a learning experience that will give you a taste of our humble little community on the Florida coast. Let's hear more about what gets his reels spinning.

What are three items you never leave the dock without? Sunglasses, Hat, Water What is your favorite species to target? Snook Inshore, Tuna Offshore Preferred Rig? Can't beat an old-fashioned jig! Why did you decide to offer such a wide variety of charter options? (inshore, offshore, shark fishing) I wanted to be able to cater to all clients. Those who just want to spend a day on the water to those who are after that fish of a lifetime. Who is your favorite person to fish with and why? I like to fish with anyone who is willing to learn or can teach me something. What attributes separate an Okay fishing guide compared to what you would consider a great guide? Giving clients the best experience possible through how you maintain your vessel and how you engage them in every aspect of the day is a big part of what separates you from the pack. What do you feel is the biggest challenge with being a guide in our area? Bait is a huge factor when fishing the way I do, so that can sometimes be an issue having to spend the day before to have enough for a full 8 hour charter. I love to fish, though, so I don't consider it a challenge. It’s just another piece to the puzzle.

Do you fish tournaments? I did when I was younger, and now every once in a while I may join a boat/team to help when they call me. Do you have a rival when it comes to fishing competitively? I would say my biggest rival would be myself. I am always critiquing any move I make, any knot I tie, to make sure everything is set up for the most successful outcome is something that is always on my mind. What’s your most embarrassing fishing story/ memory? Well I have fallen out of a boat a good number of times and none of them were my best moments. But, it does happen. Where else, besides Florida, have you had the opportunity to fish? I have been fortunate enough to fish a lot of the Gulf of Mexico, Salmon in California, all the way to Venezuela, Aruba, and Curacao. Any last words or people to thank? A lot of my drive and dedication came from my parents and the way they raised me. I owe it to them for most of my success. I also have to thank my wife for seeing the same dream for me that I have, and for supporting me in any way that she can.

Can you tell me about how you got into guiding and how you got to where you are today? Growing up fishing I always knew I wanted to figure out a way to fish everyday. During my 3 years in Gainesville, FL at college I spent any chance I could in Cedar Key or Crystal River on the west coast. Eventually, I switched gears and got my 6-pack Captains License at the age of 20. I ended up upgrading my license to 100 ton Master during my 5 years running supply vessels out of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. I saved money along the way, enough to set myself up with the 2 boat "fleet" that is Driftwood Charters. Now I am home full time and attempting to live my dream from when I was a kid.

1. 4'8" X 23" X 3" - JT Handshapes This was inspired by the Bing Speedsquare created by Matt Calvani. I feel, with the S wings fins, I've never gone faster on a surfboard in 38 years of wave riding. 2. 5'5" X 22" X 2½" - Larry Mabile Twin Keel I feel everyone needs a traditional fish like this in their quiver. Based off Steve Lis and Skip Frye style fishes. 3. 5'8" X 20'¾" X 2'½" - Greg Griffin Modfish This Five fin surfboard has been impressive. Totally flat bottom with hard edges from nose to tail. Greg's an incredible shaper/designer and makes his own fins for each board he makes.

Great combo. 5. 6'0" X 20'¾" X 2'½" - Neal Purchase Junior Quartet The theory behind this fin setup is to give a little more grip than the standard twin fin setup.

MAY/JUNE FISHING OUTLOOK

FISHING REPORT OFFSHORE Not only are there brush fires everywhere, but the waters are scorching hot as summer is in full swing. You can expect the bite to continue to be very active. Look for the shrimp boats and chase for some awesome action. You never know what kind of monsters you might hook up with in this scenario. Don’t be surprised to put up a fight with tarpon, spinners, or black-tip sharks. You can still expect to get into sport fish as warm water is still around. Look for schools of mahi around weed beds or any other floating structures. The bite has been really hot so far this year for the always delicious mahi. If you’re lucky, you might still hook up with wahoo, sail, a monster red snapper or the elusive marlin! Always keep a lookout for water temperature breaks, current rips, and flying fish. If you encounter any of these you should be in the meat. Prepare yourselves for a healthy bite in the next two months with tight lines!

Casey Collins scores big red! | Photo Courtesy of: Collins @caseycolli

INSHORE This time of year inshore in Central Florida produces great fishing for redfish, trout, and even a few tarpon. Water levels are back up again (thank god) and as the wind slows down, this will produce some great shoreline sight fishing on the shallow grass flats in Mosquito Lagoon. Compared to the past few years, The algae bloom looks like it's decreasing quite a bit, from Mosquito Lagoon all the way up to Ponce Inlet has returned to normal summer water clarity conditions. This is producing excellent fishing for redfish cruising shorelines and oyster clumps, tailing on grass flats, and floating around on deeper grass flats. Anglers have already started proving a healthy bite off the Ponce Inlet jetty with sturdy slot Snook. Historically this is the best time of year to catch world class Speckled Trout that can get as hearty as 10 lbs in weight. Florida is the mecca for fishing, get ready for some tight lines and big fish this summer!

JOHN HIMMELSTEIN

TATTOO ARTIST AT TROPICAL TATTOO STUDIO

Originally from Daytona, John Himmelstein has recently returned from almost two decades in Europe, where for years his graphic and tattoo artwork was a distinguishing feature of the bohemian quarter of London. He has been tattooing professionally since 1986 and not only designed album covers but painted, sculpted, animated, storyboarded, and illustrated a number of other diverse works. John currently works at Willy's Tropical Tattoos, where he specializes in custom work and cover ups of any size. He has particularly excellent skills in color and realism.

What’s your actual tattooing process like? Magical!

How long have you been tattooing? Since 1986

Be honest. Chicks get all worked up when you are tattooing them and constantly hitting on you, don't they? Let’s just say the "lamentation of the women" is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Name of Studio? Tropical Tattoo What got you interested in tattooing? I just happened into it. I wandered into a shop with some artwork and came out with a job. Being a tattooist just wasn't on my radar at that time. Can you talk a little bit about your journey to your current style? What kind of stuff did you start out doing? Visually I’ve always been into sci-fi, horror, comics and still am, so that's all a big influence whenever I design things. I guess I'm still doing the same stuff I always did.

Any parts of the body you won't tattoo? Yep, and those would be the parts that shouldn't be tattooed. What were you doing prior to tattooing? Well the same thing I still do, illustration, animation and some concept design stuff like that. What type of music is best to work with? Anything that helps the customer relax is best and that varies from person to person. If I played what I liked, I don't think most people would be able to relax.

@Himmelworks

About how many people have you tattooed over the years? I’ve been pretty busy every day for 30 years and all over the world, so I think the answer would be... a lot. Tell us something random about you. I am both the world’s tallest midget and the world’s smallest giant. Shout outs/Thank yous? Nope! I did it my way!

Lil Finn Ruddy 6. Work hard, play harder! NSB always has good looking humans running around town. 7. With legends like Jimmy “Fast” Lane with his work on display, why wouldn’t you show up?! 8.
