SEPTEMBER SESSIONS

14

This summer has been one for the books. Great weather and countless memories is the perfect recipe for a Florida summer, but I have to say that I'm excited for the transition into autumn. While summer is great, the heat and crowds can beat you down and make you wish for those quieter, cooler Fall days. The cruel combination of getting older and the constant influx of our beach towns busting at the seams has made me grumpy at times and short fused! Instead of dwelling on all the things that are completely out of my control, my best option is to focus on all the season that is upon us. Fall in Florida is, hands down, one of our favorite times of the year. We get a break from the heat, the kids are back in school and everything comes together making it the perfect time to focus on the outdoor surroundings and activities. Fall is a

time of fortune, with long days, cooler weather, and less crowds. As Floridians finally get a break from the humidity and heat, we celebrate the slightly cooler weather by enjoying long days outside and embracing some of the great activities and festivals that our area has to offer. Fall tends to be the peak of our hurricane season, as well. Nearly one-third of the hurricanes affect Florida in September and about three-fourths of the storms affect the state between August and October. Last year we had a little wakeup call when Irma rolled through late season. Our community was impacted and we were once again reminded of the power of mother nature. As surfers, it’s in our DNA to look for the next storm to develop, so we can do what many in their right

EDITOR'S

mind would never think to do, “Hurricane Hunt!” The first hurricane for us, Hurricane Florence, has been sending long period ground swells to the entire coast. The track is still undetermined as we go to print, and we hope that it doesn't hit landfall and all are safe. Storms are forming one after another off the coast of Africa and it’s looking like this hurricane season could be one for the history books. Let’s just hope the storm gods are good to us and only send nice swells to the coastline, instead of devastating weather. For better or worse, sunshine to tropical havoc, it doesn’t get any better than these months. Stay safe my friends, and if a beast of a storm is chugging up the coast, get the hell out of dodge! Nestled in the heart of the up and coming Canal district, Prima is an Italian delight with a modern twist. Local hipsters sip fine wines paired with gourmet pizzas while chefs behind the bar entertain the crowd making cheesy masterpieces from recipes crafted over many generations. Local legend Greg Miller didn’t create this magic by accident. His parents owned and operated many pizzerias, and he’s been working at restaurants for most of his life. I sat down with Greg to learn a little more about how this dream became a reality. Words by: Bill Gallagher The food is incredible. What’s your secret? Well I can’t tell you all of them… first of all I learned from the absolute best, but it’s mostly family recipes that I enjoyed as a kid, stuff that reminds me of going to an old school pizzeria. But there’s something here for everybody. It’s cool how you didn’t hide the kitchen. It was a risky move, and a lot of people called me crazy for doing it. When you see what the cooks are doing back there, there’s no hiding anything. I hired a lot of bartenders with great personalities that had a knack for food. Patrons compliment the cook personally, and they take pride in that. Everybody wins.

You’re adding to the culture of the area for sure. The place has a very fun vibe. That was my thing when opening this place. My main reason was to give people of New Smyrna a fun new place to eat. I go to Brooklyn all the time, and you see people enjoying great wine paired with pizza. I wanted to give New Smyrna that option. So what do you recommend on the menu? I would go with meatballs and ricotta, if you want to get the flavor of Prima. As far as pizza goes, the Bee Line is king right now. Hot Sopressata, Calabrian chili peppers, and chili infused honey. They all sound delicious. Any last shout outs? Shout out to my family for making this possible.

JASON EPPERSON

RESIDES: NSB SHOOTING SINCE: 2012 AGE: 33 @j_epp_

Hi Jason, where and when was the last image you captured? The last imaged I captured was this past week in Mosquito Lagoon. What type of equipment do you use? I used mostly Canon equipment. My two camera bodies are the 5D Mark III and the 6D. As for favorite lenses, I mainly use the Sigma 24mm Art lens and the Canon 100-400 f 4.5 II. I really like using the Sigma 24mm for landscapes, architecture and documentary photography, you can really fit a lot of information into the frame and it has a unique and beautiful way of handling light. The Canon 100-400mm is my go to for shooting nature or surfing. What's a normal day in your life look like? A normal day for me consists of mostly going to work at Red Dog Surf Shop with my dog Kolbi, haha. Being one of the managers definitely takes up a lot of my free time. When I have a day off I usually spend the first half of the day on Mosquito Lagoon shooting photos and fishing with my brother, Paddy. If the surf is good, I’ll either surf or take photos. Give us a little background on how you got into photography? I’ve been attracted to photography most of my life. When I was young my parents had a subscription to National Geographic and I remember spending hours looking at all the amazing images in the different issues. Around the same time my mom bought me this price point Vivitar 35mm camera. I remember walking around taking pictures and trying to load the film by myself, not totally sure about what I was doing, haha. Then when I was older, I got

22

ahold of a Canon K2 35mm and started taking pictures of my friends wakeboarding. That was pretty challenging and addicting. What inspires you? What inspires me is knowing that it’s a big world out there, and the opportunity to find subject matter and create images is endless. It’s very exciting when you think about it! Give us three words that describes your photography? I would have to say contextual, didactic, introspective. Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photographer? There are a lot of people that have helped me on my way to become a photographer. The first and most important person is my fiancée, Lauren. She knew I loved photography, so she pushed me to go back school and get my bachelors degree in photography from the University of Central Florida. While in school, I met many amazing classmates and professors, all of who pushed each other and helped each other grow. What is your favorite place to shoot? My favorite place to shoot, for now, is Mosquito Lagoon. You never know what the lagoon is going to present to you. What do you enjoy the most about being a photographer in our area? What I enjoy most about being a photographer in our area is the amount of different subject matter. Mosquito Lagoon is an amazing place to shoot nature and landscapes, and when the waves are good, it makes for a good opportunity to shoot surfing. Also, if you know the right people, it is possible to create some nice documentary images like I did a little while back with Greg Geiselman at the Orion factory. Any trips planned for the rest of 2018 or next year? I do have a have big trip coming up at the end of the year, as a matter of fact. My fiancée and I are packing up and traveling out west at the end of November for an undetermined amount of time. We will be traveling and living out of our truck checking out different national parks, public lands and towns across the west. Do you have a few tips for young aspiring photographers? Tips and advice I have for aspiring photographers is this; have fun with photography, stay motivated, don’t get discouraged, take the picture even if you’re not sure, and learn the basics of photography and your camera. Everything else will follow! Also, if anyone wants to make photography a career, they need to check out the photography program at Daytona State College and the University of Central Florida. The programs and staff are amazing! Any Last words or shout outs? Thank you guys for the feature in Fluid and letting me contribute to the magazine in the past! A huge thank you to the photography staff at Daytona State College and University of Central Florida. The knowledge and discipline I gained from them is invaluable. Thanks to my brother, Paddy, for poling me around in the lagoon so I can get the shot, my mom, Garrett Coppola and Grease City Cycles, my classmates at UCF, Devon Tresher for always coming up with new adventures, my Red Dog family, and most importantly, my fiancée, Lauren! 23

COREY HOWELL Age: 22

@ShredDoctor

Sponsors: Cannibal Surfboards, Flomotion, Ron Jon Surf Shop, Smith, Nixon, Globe, Xcel Wetsuits The old saying “hard work pays off” is the perfect fit for a stellar young man by the name of Corey Howell. We don't know Corey's parents, but they did a damn good job raising this guy. Labeled as “Shred Doctor” for his power surfing, clinical skills, and working with every professional and junior pro surfer in Florida, Corey Howell knows a thing or two about reaching and maintaining status as an Elite Athlete. At the age of 15, he began his professional surfing career. As he progressed through school, he realized that although he surfed less, he was keeping up with the pack and winning! What was the secret recipe? Hard work and sweat. His Training is balance, strength, and endurance but not like a normal weightlifter, that would make him too bulky. He started to watch surfing and the mechanics, then incorporate exercises mimicking surfing's foundation. Corey has captured 9 East Coast titles, 3 Pro wins, 6 Junior pro victories, and was the first to win back-to-back NSSA College Men’s National titles and take a red-eye back to his internship with the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars. At the age of 21, Corey graduated from the University of North Florida’s Athletic Training program studying and evaluating sports injuries. His clinical experiences range from University Men’s basketball, professional soccer, summer internship with the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars, and High School sports. He has also worked as a lead evaluator for a mud obstacle course series called Tough Mudder for traumatic acute injuries with Staff Medics LLC. Corey is currently enrolled in Palmer College of Chiropractic with the hopes of helping thousands in the surf community. He currently lives in New Smyrna Beach, FL with pro surfer, Michael Dunphy. Recently, he had the opportunity to work with 11 X World Champion Kelly Slater, which he commented "The energy in the room was unbelievable. To be given the chance collaborate with one of the world's greatest athletes was a dream come true. I look forward to what the future holds."

Who is someone you've always looked up to in our surf community? Evan Geiselman, 100%! Growing up surfing NSSA, I would watch him dominate in any conditions and his inverted tail whips are every grom’s dream. Being able to work with him between surf events truly makes what I do a dream job. Where in God's name did you get such a crazy work ethic from? Most of my inspiration comes from having a killer friend group and parents that are always doing an excellent job in whatever they put their mind to. I have such a wide spectrum of friends from professional surfers, football players, soccer, basketball, wakeboarding, and then I switch roles learning from some of the best serial entrepreneurs, online sales owners, doctors, and health enthusiasts. I feel that I am accepted by each and every person I come in contact with, so I apply what I like from their lives. I watch, listen, and ask for help a lot. It has helped broaden my perspective that being a young professional is just not enough for what I want to accomplish. I have big goals, a lot of drive and energy, but to make it where I want to be I need to raise my selfawareness and go! Do you get more joy out of contest surfing or free surfing? Competition. I love challenging myself and seeing where I am amongst the pack. Competition is the driving reasons why I do so much training in and out of the water. I will never lose that desire to be the best athlete I can be in and out of the water.

26

Best surf trip you've been on? Last summer I stayed a month in Popoyo, Nicaragua. I was able to host my 2nd surf retreat and caught absolutely pumping waves. Magnific Rock has one of the best views around for sunsets, yoga, and workout decks, so I am in heaven every time I visit. I also went on a few cultural tours, gave away over 90 lbs of clothing, 30 pairs of shoes, set-up 20 Waves for Water filters, and gave one of my best friends, Cesar, a brand new surfboard. I felt so woke coming back from that trip. It changed my life. What is the biggest wave you ever caught? Surprisingly, I haven’t pushed big wave surfing yet. I’ve paddled into Outer Reef 10-12 ft. and that was an adrenaline rush like no other, but I have my eyes set on surfing Teahupo’o when I graduate Palmer Chiropractic. I’m hoping to get a few nuggets and advice on how it is done from Cory Lopez. Training is a big part of your success, tell us more about your routine and what it takes to get to the next level? No need to lie about this part. Lately I have turned to mostly a vegan diet, cook all of my own food and have a few key

supplements I take to help me focus mentally. I write yearly goals, then break them down into weekly goals and treat it like a checklist to make sure I am getting everything I know I want and desire. I exercise 3-4 times a week and try to ride my surfboard, indoboard, skateboard, or paddleboard everyday. I recently purchased a clean water and alkaline filter so I drink around 2 gallons a day, no more plastic water bottles. My nighttime routine is where I feel I win and most struggle. I wear my bluelight glasses, lower the temperature below 68, turn on my essential oils diffuser, play Lo-Fi hip hop beats to study or read. I try my best to stay away from my phone and sleep 7-9 hours every night. Lots of crazy diseases and stats on lower athletic/mental ability correlated to lack of sleep. What inspired you to go into the chiropractic field? Senior year at UNF I was a student athletic trainer for the University’s Men’s Basketball team. At that point, I was confident with my rehab skills and sport specific training, so I assumed that Physical Therapy would be a perfect fit. However when I shadowed PT doctors it didn’t peak my personal interest. Then my whole perspective changed when a chiropractor came to the stadium and had all the of A1 athletes psyched to get “tuned up.” Right then I knew that I wanted to be the doctor that patients are stoked to visit, not just because they’re in pain, but I can improve their overall quality of living. What was it like working with the Jacksonville Jaguars? Experience like no other. Athletic Trainers do a majority of the field setting, hydration, injury management, documentation, and overseeing of the athlete’s health. You have to be confident in your abilities as a clinician or run the risk of the athletes not trusting your skills. Communication was a key skill and the entire program ran off the 7 P’s – Prior Proper Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. It was an eye opening experience both as an athlete and clinician to see what the best of the best are doing and their philosophy why.

Tell us something that most people don't know about you? I hardly talk about surfing. Only a few professors even know I surf. I was named after Cory Lopez. Lastly, I might be incriminating myself but, my best friend and filmer, Dalton and I climb a majority of our billboards on the highway, haha. Tell me about a life changing event. Not being there for my grandmother emotionally before she passed from a brain tumor. I was so stressed with school work and surfing that mentally I was weak and didn’t know what to say when she needed me most. I love my family/friends and sometimes I think that everything I am doing with school, work, and surfing makes it okay to put other important things on the back burner, but it was a major life check. What are your plans for the next 12 months? I start my acupuncture license next month, plan to have a full launch with my sports performance company by the end of 2018, train with Laird Hamilton, solidify a spot to help at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, win a Pro surf contest in doctorate school, and surf all 100 waves at Typhoon Lagoon as a fundraiser for clean water filters. Favorite place to eat in New Smyrna Beach? Go Juice and Perrine’s Produce. I love to cook and so does my wallet. Any shout outs or last words? Everyday I’m asked how to improve overall health and fitness. My best advice is to find an area you’re weak or curious about, apply it for 2 weeks, then incorporate another aspect. There is a huge gray area in-between health and disease. All of us are somewhere on the spectrum between the two. You don’t have to become perfectly healthy in 1 month, but we can consistently move along the spectrum towards health and will begin feeling a lot better.

BLOOM

SEPT/OCT FISHING OUTLOOK

FISHING REPORT OFFSHORE It is hard to say that this isn't the best time of year to live in Central Florida. The months of September and October will gradually bring cooler air with cold fronts approaching from the North. With this, the water will cool down a bit and give us a change from all the hot summer heat! You can expect higher winds as the cold fronts are coming down in weekly or monthly waves. Although this is somewhat of a huge disadvantage for fisherman, the bites will become much more aggressive and constant throughout the fall days. The past few weeks, fishing has been decent, but not great. Most of the reports coming in have been hitting a variety of species; Sea bass, jacks, red snapper, king mackerel, sharks, wahoo and a few mahi as well. A good bit of action has been found following bait schools several miles off of the beaches. Slow trolling with live baits or drifting with fresh dead baits has been the most productive method of getting these fish to bite behind shrimp boats.

Photo: Courtesy of Ray Altmann

INSHORE With the cooler water temperatures, the trout game will turn on big time. In addition, there has been reports of schools of redfish in the lagoon. In the deeper waters surrounding New Smyrna, there has been some snook and tarpon to be found. We don't see the bite slowing down at all the next month or two. There have been reports of tons of snook around the docks and bridges. For those fishing the Jetty, you will be able to get on some upper to over-slot redfish. Around the piers their has been a plethora of blackdrum, sheepshead, whiting, and red drum. The amount of bait fish has been pretty thick the last few weeks. If you want to see some great action, head out to the beach and see if you can find schools of mullet swimming the shore! Lastly, for the courageous angler, there will be quite a show of tarpon rolling off the beaches. If you have a yak, SUP, or boat, now is one of the best times to get a poon on the end of your line. Try free-lining some mullet and see what you can come up with! We've seen some monster tarpon rolling outside the surf at New Smyrna Inlet.

FLUID TRAVEL

THE MALDIVES PHOTOS & WORDS: KEVIN WAKEFIELD

When you think vacation it brings to mind images of resort cocktails poolside, sleeping in late, living on your own schedule and generally doing whatever you feel like doing. The Maldives is not that type of trip. The travel getting there is brutal, a 16 hour flight to Dubai, followed by 12 hour layover, then another 5 hour flight to Male. Once in Male you get to board and meet the crew of your new home for the next 10 days. From there you have another 4-5 hour boat ride before your first surf. It goes without saying, on a trip this long there will be some pitfalls along the way. Our first came immediately upon our arrival in Male when we were informed the Jade Atoll, which was to be our boat, had alternator problems and had to be switched out for another vessel. It was a significant downgrade in terms of luxury but we were stoked to still have a boat at that point. This boat too would find mechanical issues along the way, causing a missed days surf and some griping from the boys. We had some days of high winds and poor weather which unless you are into reading or sleeping a lot leaves you with very little to do. All the islands of the Maldives are

36

either uninhabited, a resort (you have to have permission to visit) or entirely Muslim, so the closest thing to a party you’re going to find is when one of the 5 daily prayers are delivered from the mosques. Also unlike many vacations, your time is not always your own. If you are the last guy up in the morning, the last guy to board the Dohni, or the last guy in the lineup, everyone is waiting on you.

encountered, were always friendly, and with the long wrapping lineups there are enough waves for everybody.

What does all this add up to? Well if you’re like most of us on the boat, the trip of a lifetime! The entire country and all of its Atolls are yours to explore and with the right guide there is a reef firing for every swell and wind direction possible. Our guide, 2 Star Teddy, as we came to call him, had knowledge of about roughly 80 breaks and undoubtedly there are many more yet to be discovered. The waves for the most part are inviting and not overly intimidating like some that can be found elsewhere in the Indian Ocean. Although, almost everyone one on the boat ended up on the reef at some point and a few boards became casualties along the way. Crowds, when they are

WHERE Hotel Chancletas (AKA The Boom) located in the northern portion of Nicaragua's Pacific beaches.

So when it’s “vacation” time, head back to Central America for the 10th time, try Mexico or California, even. But when you’re ready for the trip of a lifetime, a boat trip in the Maldives will be an experience unlike any other. I, for one, cant wait to go back!

WHAT Our favorite beach resort in Nicaragua. They are the closest accommodation to one of Central Americas greatest waves, The Boom. In addition to great surf, they also have great options for those interested in fishing, SUP tours, and yoga retreats. WHERE Maldives- Live aboard the Hariyana-One Not the Jade Atoll

WHAT 10 Days exploring the Northern and Central Atolls of the Maldives. The best waves can be had from April to October, with the biggest swells likely to occur in June to September. The surf generally ranges in size from 3-8 feet. CONDITIONS Flat Florida Summer is start of the rainy surf season in the Maldives. WHY To get away from crowds, explore empty islands and world class waves year around. BABES AND BROS Make sure you like the people you travel with, no seriously. You are going to be with them non-stop for two weeks in a confined space. Keep in mind it is a strict Muslim culture, so be sure to respect the law of the land. WHAT TO BRING Keep in mind what you bring is all you’ve

got. And if you bring something really useful, bring enough for everybody. Obvious: sunscreen, rash guards, extra leashes, wax. Aspirin and something like Tiger Balm for sore shoulders. Not so obvious: a good surf hat (yes you will look goofy but the sun is relentless and you’ll be happy you brought it), mask and snorkel, Energy gel packs, dramamine, snacks, booties, first aid kit, sleeping pills for the plane ride, ding repair kit, extra boards. WHAT NOT TO BRING A lot of clothes. You don’t need much. You end up wearing the same shirt everyday and space is at a premium. CROWD FACTOR This is all relative and we surfed some of the best waves of our trip with only our boat crew in the lineup. That being said, the Central atolls can get a little crowded as day boats from the resorts will make frequent drop offs. Get in the water early or late in the day to avoid the resort crowd. Southern atolls are less crowded as the long trip south is not for the faint of heart. Rough open seas

between the Atolls can keep you sliding from rail to rail on the vessel. SECRETS OF THE TRIP Fly Emirates, period. They have open bar, real meals, and boards fly free. With 2 days travel time each way you want to be as comfortable as possible. Emirates also provides a free room for your layover in Dubai. Use your stopover wisely. There’s luggage and board storage at the Male airport. Go snowboarding at the Mall of Emerites in Dubai! It’s not as expensive as you would think! IF THE SURF IS FLAT Fish, dive, eat, drink…then repeat. Some of the best diving in the world is just beneath your toes as you are floating in the lineup. The only place you can get used to opening your eyes underwater when you duck-dive. Keep in mind any fish caught will likely show up at your next meal.

TALK STORY:

MIKE LUKE What motto do you live by if any? My motto for living life is all about Karma. What you put into life is what you want back. How long have you been surfing for? I have been surfing for 41 years. I was 18 when I moved to NSB in 1978. What was it like in the 80's being a surfer in our area? Being a surfer in the 80's was a lifestyle of the free-spirited, simple living, ocean minded individuals that found peace and tranquility with time in the ocean.

Who were the top guys at the inlet back in those days? Hands down the top guys when I came in were Terry “Poker" Presley, Charley Baldwin, Ron Shipman, Randy Schwear, Randy Richenberg, Mike Katif, Bernie Crouch, Ross Pell, Clay Lyles, Jim Lane, Jimmy Johnston, Leon Johnston, Chip Clark, Greg Berg and James Guzman. What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the New Smyrna Beach area? The biggest difference to me in this town & our beach is free life has become terribly regulated. It's to the point all of our cities are becoming ruled of its laws and they compromise having a free great day at the beach. It was really nice in the 80's and early 90’s. It’s not a small Mayberry RFD Town anymore, which is a bummer.

Photo: Ruddy

Back when I was a grom, you and the NSB inlet crew had the inlet on lock. You guys ruled that place and made sure visitors were on their best behavior. Times have changed. huh? Is it tougher to regulate than it use to be? Regulation, it has many paths but by nature all humans care and protect their home environment from violent nature. It solely depends on locals to keep the order these days. There is no violent action to make things as they should be, but everyone is more educated from their first surfs to the progression stage. But, a crowd factor is always going to be the issue of getting that wave. We all know that the most aggressive, best paddlers and best surfers will always be on them. What year did you start shaping surfboards and how did you get into it? I started shaping in 1988. I was riding for Bruce Walker with Ocean Avenue surfboards. Jeff Klugel was my shaper. He was shaping most of my current ripsticks. I would take notes, and one day he asked why I took notes. I said I wanted to shape my own one day, so during a session he handed me the planer and I tried it. I skinned the blank terribly, but he cleaned it up. Then the next day I went and bought my tools, tax ID number, and away I went. It was and still is the most rewarding thing in my life to be able to ride my own shaped surfboard. Scoop, you've always been in tip top shape. What is the secret? It's all about eating good isn't it, damnit? Honestly, being in shape comes from working hard at surfing. Also, 20 years of super bike racing, training 6 days a week on dirt bikes to halfway make a living and

gain four National U.S. Titles at Daytona. My list of jobs growing up; I worked very hard at construction, I was a groundsman on a lineman crew, I built metal buildings, iron and sheeting, and also worked with block mason's for 6 years. It put some strength on me, but I've always eaten whatever. I had plenty of exercise and maintenance on the body. I consider myself very fortunate to be in this shape at 60 years old. You've made your home base in Costa Rica. How is the "tico lifestyle" treating you? Do you miss home at all? Costa Rica is 110% awesome for me. The people stoke me more there than anything! It has unreal scenery, great culture, great food, and waves. Not to mention the dirt biking, fishing, jet skiing, pull ins, etc. I don't miss home because it's not the same. But, I do miss all my peeps and especially my heat's with the Gorkin, Cloer Sourbaugh, Beefcake, Kevin Kelly, Charley Hajek and all the people that we did this with for the last 20 years. What is our youth lacking? Well, first off they need a little of Noah Schweitzer's mannerisms and smooth out, maybe watch Parko, and dream big, to be competitive outside the box of surfing and skating. What is the best traveling experience of your life? Two trips stick out big time. First was a winter season with North Shore legend, Johnny Boy Gomes, with a bonus private session with Wayne boy Victorino, Dane Kealoha, Johnny Boy Gomes, Johnny Edwards and myself on the west side. The 2nd awesome trip was one to Mentawais, with Mark Wooster, Jeremy Johnston, Nils Schweitzer, Ricky Martis and a few others. It was epic barrels every day, and it was free for me because of my race sponsorship and good friend, Gene Teolis. Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs or thank you’s? To Charlie Baldwin for the great mentor and amazing waterman. To Jimmy Johnston for getting me into the contest and surfing world. without it I might have never progressed or shaped. To my long time surfing buddy, Kenny Hiles, for being a great friend. Shout out to Scott Brill, Greg Berg and Tony Humes (rip) for being such good surfers back in the day. Thanks to Ian Cairnes for complimenting a cut back during the 1983 Stubbies Surf Contest at Sebastian Inlet. To receive a compliment from someone legendary like that was one of my biggest highlights in my surfing life. 39
