FROM THE
EDITOR The holidays are already here again? You have to be kidding me! As I get a little older, it’s crazy how fast time flies and this issue of Fluid Magazine marks two years of glory! When I say glory, I’m not trying to say that we are the best thing since sliced bread, I am just personally proud of what we’ve accomplished. From people like, Jeff Lastinger, the original art director who was a huge part of getting us off the ground running, to every single person who has ever submitted an article or photo to us. Each issue is another journey and we never would be able to complete the trip without all of our resources. Who I really need to thank the most are our advertisers. We are a free publication and without them we wouldn’t be in existence. So instead of looking at all the beautiful humans, images, and concepts, take a deeper look at the advertisements. For a Christmas present to us, buy local, and tell our advertisers we sent you. As we hit the two year mark for Fluid, it brings me back in time to our inception into the print world. People didn’t have much faith in us. I don’t know if that’s the right way to put it. It’s not that they didn’t have faith in the idea of Fluid Magazine, it’s more that my family and friends were watching out for my well-being. When I started to ask people about my concept that I was about to implement, I had a few weary

looks. Of course my mom was like, “Bry-Bry you can do anything you put your mind to.” But the average person pointed out the negative facts. The economy is hurting and advertising is a tough business. They were right, things are tough in Central Florida and around the country, but Mama Forand was right too! If you do put your mind to something, and dig deep, things will happen for you. I want all our readers out there to remember that. If you have an idea that has been in the back of your mind for a while, expose it to the world. You never know till you give it a go. Make it your New Years resolution, stay creative and think forward. Thank you and Happy Holidays to the Fluid Staff, all of our advertisers, and you the readers that keep us motivated and real! I dedicate this issue to the best man I ever knew, my grandfather Robert Forand who recently went to heaven. What he taught all of us was to put yourself last and help others. It blows me away that he would help people he didn’t even know and really enjoy every minute of it. We will all miss you grandpa!!

Originally from? Orlando, Florida. Occupation? Full time Pharmacy student and model. Where would your dream trip take you? Back to Thailand! I was lucky enough to book a calendar shoot in Koh Samui, Thailand last year. It was such a magical experience, I would kill to go back! How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Far too often. It’s too accessible through my phone these days, but it’s a great way to connect with your network and stay in touch with friends! Most important thing on a first date? Full attention! So many times friends and I would go out and realize we spend too much time paying attention to our phones and various businesses rather than our company. Turn on’s? Intelligence, humor, loyalty, and fidelity. Good taste in music doesn’t hurt either. Turn off’s? High maintenance, lack of goals/vision, and being unkempt. Total pet peeve. How long does it take you to get ready if you are going out? It probably takes me longer to get ready than we will actually be at the event. Perfection can not be rushed! Got a boyfriend? That’s for me to know and you to find out! Dogs or cats? Dogs! I have a thing for chubby dogs. I’ve always wanted an English bulldog. Speaking of pets though, I’d probably take a waddling duck over a dog as a pet. Beach, River, or Asphalt? Asphalt. I’ve been a fixture in the Import Racing scene for a while now. I’m always at car shows, whether I’m actually hosting or just spectating. Best Beach in Florida? Siesta Keys! Favorite celebrity? Channing Tatum, especially after that performance in Magic Mike lol. Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? I’ll take them all, please and thank you! Favorite Spot to have a good night out? Tier! Worst Pickup Line? If your eyes were the ocean, I’d be lost at sea. I love Fluid magazine because _________? It caters to the local community and highlights individuals in the local scene. What does the future hold for the lovely Vivian? I’m in the process of finishing my doctorates within the next few years, then who knows! Much more traveling is on the horizon and hopefully adopt that pet duck I was talking about haha.

I remember hanging around the surfboard factory as a kid, bothering the shapers and staff. We would go around cleaning and sweeping the factory trying to earn lunch money. This issue’s Grom Profile takes it to the next level. Let’s hear where this young buck gets all of his knowledge and ambitions from. RYAN CONKLIN INTERVIEW...
How old are you? I just turned 13. I started shaping when I was 12. What grade are you in and where do you go to school? 8th and Buddy Taylor Middle School 28 T HEFLUIDMAG. C OM
Do you know anyone else around your age that shapes boards? no. How many boards have you shaped? About ten and in the middle of two right now. What made you decide that you wanted to shape surfboards? Jamie Ridgewell was my surf coach and my brother was going to shape a board with him. I always liked building and creating things so I asked if I could shape with them. When I started getting feedback about my boards I wanted to shape more. Jamie shared the board with Stu Sharpe from T & C and Stu told Jamie he couldn’t believe I was only 12
and that the board was sick. I was stoked! Do you have a favorite shaper? Yes, I have a few. Matt Calvani from Bing Shapes Retroboards, Stue Sharpe shapes under a few labels like Town & Country & Sharpe Surf Boards, and Ricky Carrol is an all-round awesome shaper & really nice guy. Are your family and friends supportive about you shaping? Yes, very! Especially my parents. They helped me start up my business and they drive me everywhere to pick up blanks and anywhere else I need to go. Who has guided you through the process
PHOTO: Johnny Perkins
and given you some pointers? My surf coach Jamie Ridgewell taught me how to shape my first board. He moved so I haven’t been able to shape with him but I watch a ton of videos on Youtube. I read blogs written by other shapers like Almond Surfboards. I also ask a bunch of the older more experienced surfers what they like about their board. Is it harder to shape a board than people think? Yes, unless you know exactly what you want. Like, it’s hard to figure out the rocker and concave. It’s much easier if you know a lot about surfboards. I also use Akushaper, which is a computer program and virtual board shaper. It let’s you see what the board will turn out like at the end and you can mess with the dimensions. Are you wanting to make a career out of shaping one day or is it more as a hobby? Who knows. Hoping to make a career out of it one day. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully in a shaping bay with lots of orders. How can people order a board? Do you have Facebook or insta? Email: ryanconklinshapes@gmail.com Phone: 386-569-5071 FB: www.facebook.com/Ryanconklinshapes Insta: http://instagram.com/ryanconklinshapes Thanks to? My parents for supporting me a bunch, Jamie Ridgwell for teaching me, and all of my friends and family.

How’s life been? It ain’t been too bad, recently moved back to the states after 1 1/2 years of living the pura vida life in Costa Rica. I was gonna do “Gorky Park” but my pops had a major brain surgery about 2 months ago. It could have been fatal but went amazingly thanks to God! So now I have decided that my family is way more important than trying to live somewhere else. I spent my whole child & adult life doing that and missed out on tons of family stuff. Now it’s time to catch up . Any plans for the fall/winter? Not too much, just try and get Gorkin Surfboards off the ground and running. Maybe a surf trip in between? When we first came to you with this idea of an eleven year old kid shaping you a board, were you weary? Not too much, because you never know what will work nowadays, so i was pretty open minded about it! Groms are the future in everything, gotta support it. What was your first thought when you saw the board? Did you think it would ride well for you? To be honest, I was nervous but also had a pretty good feeling about it, as Ryan did a pretty good job with the outline & such. So, tell us about your first few sessions on it? First session was a perfect little day to try it. It was like waist plus sets, high tide and perfect little A-frames. I ventured down to the inlet solo, went out and on my first wave, I had a couple wraps. I knew the board was gonna work & ended up having a really fun time! I was actually amped to surf it again to see if I was just tripping earlier because of the first session stoke, but I went out and had another super fun session. What did you like the most about the grom shaper(Conklin) board? I like how it was fast and I could wrap it really nice and still keep the speed. Any suggestions for young Ryan Conklin? just keep doing what he is doing because the boards seem to work, and don’t be scared to go outside the box. Also some advice I got recently
was “treat it like a woman, not a girl.” - Dale Cormican On another note, there has been some talk around town about you spending some time in the shaping bay...Do you think this could be the next chapter in the life of Gorkin? It is for sure! I am diving in! Hopefully, one day down the road I will be known as a good shaper and have “Gorkin Surfboards” up & running as a company in the next couple of years. Who knows, maybe spawn off into a surfshop, ha ha! I just want surfing to always be part of my life and shaping is in the blood. My pops did it since the 70’s, so why shouldn’t I be a second generation? What or who inspires you when you are shaping? I’m not sure but I did my first board about 10-12 years ago, and it worked really well somehow. I also feel like now I can get exactly what I want as far as a look of a board. Now it’s just a matter of working on getting better so they actually work and look perfect. Robo is a big influence as far as going for it, because we grew up together as groms / “pros” haha, and he is now blowing up making sick boards. Mayhem is also an
inspiration. I mean look at the guy, he has all the best guys in the world on his boards winning WCT events. We always talked surfboards, not too detailed, but about models to try and what not. Imagine if Evan (Geiselman) or Jeremy (Johnston) or Noah (Schweizer) won an event on a Gorkin shape or even myself?! That would be the best feeling knowing I made the craft under the feet of whoever it would be, even a grom in NSSA. Also, my pops is a big inspiration, like i said it’s in the blood. Even though we are from different eras, we can both learn off each other, it’s awesome! Any last words? just a BIG thanks to everybody who have been helping me out this past year or so from Minion Clothing, the Nub TV crew, Creatures of Leisure, Kenny G, Casey Rossi, Hersch, Red, Joe at Marbella Surf Inn, Garson, Shea, Simmons, Robo, Collins, Eros, Maccaria, Sirrr Myers, Benny B, all my instagram and facebook family & friends, Perkins & Jesse (Soulja Surf & Cattleya photo video), my pops and also my mom... if I forgot you, I am really sorry. Also I am taking board orders. So if you would like one, hit me up at gorkinsurfboards@gmail.com, and thanks to you guys for the interview :)

CENTRAL FLORIDA MUSIC
Hometown? New Smyrna Beach, FL Where and when did you make your first music? At first I was only a singer/ Emcee in the band “Offset “. After a few guitarist quit the band I decided to pick up the guitar, that band quickly dissolved. I wrote my first songs in 2000 on an acoustic guitar that I bought down at AC Pawn in Edgewater. What type of Music do you make? It’s very hard to pinpoint as one specific genre. I tend to favor funk and reggae when I perform with the band “ Soul Taxi “ and when Playing bass, I just like to groove with the guys (The Burnin Smyrnans). Where have you been this year? Earlier this year I went to the Caribbean for a week of island hoppin (solo tour), and I’ll be heading back before 2014 with a band. Gigging all over florida solo and with bands and played a few music festivals and some rocking benefits for great causes. Who or what have been the biggest influences to your music? My Parents have always been supportive of following what makes me happy and that’s key to development in anything you do. As far as musical influences: Brad Nowell, Bob Marley, Jack Johnson, Stevie Wonder & Dave Matthews had a major impact on my style of playing. Tell us a dirty joke we can print? Why do squirrels swim on their back? To keep their nuts dry! Favorite venues to play at in Central Florida? 1st Smokehouse (Tampa , FL) 3rd If you didn’t have a music career, what would you be doing for a living? Working in a warehouse or maybe some sort of trade, tile, construction, or even a boat mechanic. If you had only six months left to live, what would you do with the time? I would go Big! Travel until the wheels fall off. I would try stuff I normally wouldn’t do and think out of the box with no worry of taking risks. If you were a type of food, what type of food would you be? Anchovies, hopefully no one would eat me. Tell me something random, like your first job was a prison guard or your family owns an island in the Caribbean? In 1999 I was on a surf trip in Costa Rica and was struck by lightning and in 2001 I was bitten by a shark, both were pretty traumatic experiences. Best Advice another musician has given you? Never Quit What Central Florida bands do you like to hear live? Beartoe, SFB, The Fam Band, Beebs and Her Money Makers, The Stereotype, Shak Nasti, Buster Keaton & The A-Team. What do you think of the Central Florida music scene? Its growing fairly quickly, but over the years I’ve noticed a lot of good bands come and go.

What was the last movie you went to see? Inception What would I find in your refrigerator right now? Condiments, beer, water, veggies, and leftovers. What is your drink of choice? I love an ice cold IPA (India Pale Ale). Thanks for being part of our social music experiment. Any last shout outs, Jeff? My First record Is dropping next month. PAN HEADS When demand rises, supply increases. It’s simple economics. Panheads Pizzeria still has its New Smyrna Beach location going strong, but they also answered the request of all their Daytona Beach area patrons and friends. The new location at 4085 Ridgewood Ave. in Port Orange still has the same quality food and service that has gained them 5 star reviews by Trip Advisor. What has made Panheads Pizzeria so popular and gained them all these great reviews? They pay attention to detail! EVERYTHING is made from scratch. Each Panheads Pizza is made with the freshest produce, finest meats, and a unique blend of
cheeses. Pizza isn’t the only thing that they’ve perfected. Their salads are the best around! Their appetizers and the “stairway to heaven” desert will have you coming back for more! To keep our interest peaked, Panheads Pizzeria, Port Orange location, is offering some great new items. My personal favorite is the massive selection of craft beers, close to a hundred options, basically something for everyone!
