TUNNEL VISION It’s finally cooling off! What a crazy year we’ve had here in the good ole’ sunshine state. Definitely no shortage of action with the extremely active hurricane season. Is it just me, or does it seem like this is kind of getting out of control? Packing up all of your possessions and leaving everything behind is a horrible feeling, and that is exactly how we prepared for Hurricane Irma. Based in the coastal town of New Smyrna Beach, our house isn't located right on the beach, but we're off the river a few blocks. So our only option was to prepare for the worst and expect major damage and catastrophic flooding. As an adult living in Central Florida, I've had the opportunity to experience several major hurricanes in my lifetime thus far. Each storm has its own personality, and the last few have been moody and oh so unpredictable. The biggest difference between now and roughing it through a storm back in the day, is now I have two young kids to keep out of harm’s way. Without kids, you don't think about leaving town. It used to be a great reason to rally up the crew, fill the cooler and see what the storm brings. These “hurricane parties” are actually pretty glorious too. One testament to how serious we are about them is the fact that the liquor stores were virtually completely out of booze. I saw it with my own eyes! Now that winter is among us, and it is getting dark so damn early, we have to find a way to stay motivated. I am still trying to figure that out, but I am pretty confident that it will require getting up very, very early! Not sure that I am ready to wake up at the crack of dawn everyday to compensate for it getting dark the moment we all leave work. I think the only option is to find a few trips to look forward to in the next few months to come. I tend to preach this all the time in this magazine, but get out there and travel, and make sure you never stop! From a young age my parents took my brother and I everywhere around the globe, and as an adult I try to keep the constant journey going. It always gives me something to look forward to, and when I arrive home, I always realize how good we have it. Also, make sure that you take the time to enjoy everything we have on offer in Central Florida, but also don’t forget that a trip away will clear your mind, and assist in starting 2018 off right. MISS SUNSHINE

@mad_nag

MADISON BELK NAGLE 21 YEARS

Where do you live? Los Angeles, California Originally from? Orlando, but I like to pretend I’m an NSB local. Occupation? Model, represented by Wilhelmina LA and Elite Miami, and Actress, represented by Aperture. Where would your dream trip take you? It has always been the Maldives, but I recently checked that one off the bucket list… So, now it would have to be Tahiti or Bora Bora! Tell us something about you that might surprise us? I graduated from the University of Florida with a business degree in just three years! Go Gators! How many times a day do you use social media? (tell us the truth) Depends on the day, but social media plays a huge role in the modeling industry. I’m guilty of spending time on all the apps, but Instagram is my absolute favorite, @mad_nag. If you were a skittle, what color would you be and why? Blue, but the sour kind, because they’re my favorite. Real House Wife's or Sunday Night Football? I’m more of a Friends reruns kinda girl… Got a boyfriend? Not currently. I’m focused on my career goals and traveling right now but if the right guy comes along… Worst Pickup Line? “Do you, like, ever need a personal driver?” (I Uber a lot.) Most important thing on a first date? Make me laugh and buy me Titos. Best Beach in Florida? Some would say I’m biased, but New Smyrna Beach, hands down. Favorite celebrity? Currently obsessing over Chrissy Teigen. Who’s the hottest- Surfers, Skaters, Wakeboarder, Musicians or Artist? Surfers, duh! I love Fluid magazine because ? I love opening the magazine and seeing familiar faces. It gives me a sense of home. What does the future hold for the lovely Madison? Aside from progressing with my modeling and acting career, I’m currently in the process of earning my Florida real estate license, becoming fluent in Spanish and starting a bikini based, charitable for-profit entity… stay tuned on that one. Along the way, I hope to continue traveling and meeting like-minded, amazing people.

LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT

BEHIND THE LENS

Photographer:

COLBY RIVERIA Lives in: New Smyrna Beach Shooting since: 2010 Age: 23 @thecolby

Hi Colby, where and when was the last image you captured? This morning(10/23/17) at a really blown out North Florida spot. We’ve been cursed with strong on shore winds for so long it’s been so hard to shoot any surfing. I was hoping this wave wasn’t going to be as affected by the wind because of the set up it has, but I was wrong. What's a normal day in your life look like? I wake up, have a coffee, and check the waves to see if anywhere is fun. If the waves aren’t any fun I am usually trying to do something creative, whether it’s work on some design projects, draw, or brainstorm some ideas for the next shoot I do. The creative process is a 24-7 job with me. Give us a little background on how you got into photography. I got into photography when I was in high school. I started off messing with my dad’s digital camera and shooting my friends skateboarding, but I didn’t really find a passion for it until I did the Film Photography class at my high school. There I learned how to process, develop, and print my own photography. From there I just got addicted to it and had a camera on me all the time. When I moved to Florida to go to college I took a short break from photography but picked it back up and was shooting a lot of portrait/fashion photography. In the past year or so I’ve been working on shooting more surf photography both from the land and in the water. What inspires you? I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and skateboarded most all of my formative years. I was always looking up to photographers like Atiba Jefferson, Grant Brittain, and Mike Blabac. They each took a very different approach to their photography. I think that inspired how I approach photography, especially surf photography. Coming from a skateboarding background, I was always interested in how those photographers could not only capture the skateboarder but also really tell the story of the scene in which a trick was done. That is something I wanted to bring into the way I shoot.

18

Is there anyone who helped you the most on your way to become a photog? I was lucky to have friends like Evan Hilton and Cody Coleman who helped me learn how to shoot surf photography. There is also my photography professor, Jason Schwab, who really helped me understand how to curate my work and inspired me to think of photos in a series and not just a single image. What is your favorite place to shoot? It really depends on the mood and what I am shooting. With surf, I don’t really have one favorite spot, but I love dumpy shore break waves. If I’m doing portrait/fashion stuff I really like run down urban environments. What do you enjoy the most about being a photographer in our area? I would have to say just all the different approaches to surfing you can shoot down at the inlet. Long boarders, short boarders, alternative shape riders, it’s nice to be able to have some variety on what I can shoot. Are you currently working on any new projects? Other than getting a job not right now, no. I have an idea for a photo book, but I need to get the right gear together before I can start working on that. Have a few tips for young aspiring photographers? Experiment. Shoot a lot of different subject matters, shoot different kinds of cameras, and try different techniques. There is so much you can do with photography and so many different ways to approach it. The biggest thing is to create a style uniquely your own. Any Last words or shout outs? Thanks to all my friends who have been such a big support system for me with photography. Shout out to my parents as well as they have always been supportive of my creative drive. Finally I want to thank Gabi Walters of No Sympathy Swimwear, Drew Eggers, Brittany Timms, Natalie Schneider, and Alec Zappone. They were all important in helping me make some new opportunities as a photographer. I’m really stoked to have such a great support group and couldn’t thank you all enough.

@brotherswithin LOCAL MUSIC PROFILE

FLUID SOUNDS: BROTHERS WITHIN Photo: JASON OBENAUER/ SURFSUPWOLF.COM

Where are you based out of? We started, and are still based out of Daytona Beach Shores. How did Brothers Within get its' start and get to where it is today? We all share a deep connection with music especially Reggae music, and we found each other just as we were all first learning how to play our guitars & instruments. We set goals for ourselves to Jam at an open mic, after that our goal was to play a gig in town. Once we jammed our first show at Ricks Surf Bar in Daytona Beach, the ball never stopped rolling, or spinning on Bernie's guitar. We literally played every weekend after that and started investing all our earnings into what we have today. How did you come up with the band's name? The name Brothers Within came upon Jon and Joey at the very early beginning stages of learning to play music. We had an idea that we wanted to start a band, spread a truthful message and evoke a positive change in people through music the same way it does for us. Always calling each other bro/and brother, the name Brothers Within chose us. Because even without a stage, lights and instruments, we are still brothers within the universe. How long have you all been singing and playing instruments? Jon - Keyboard for 3.5 years Bernie - Guitar & Vocals for 2.5 years Joey - Drums, Guitar & Vocals for 3.5 years Eric - Guitar 3.5 years Jonah - Bass 8 months/Guitar 10 years

Do you play music full time or have side jobs? Playing music full time is the goal and dream for all of us, but currently we all work jobs on the side. It’s beyond tough sometimes, but It's the only way we can keep putting our earnings back into the band right now & when your doing what you love, it's 100% worth it! Who's your favorite local band (besides your own of course)? Our favorite local band would absolutely be our hometown brother band & homies by the name of "Relief"! Before we started as a band, we would watch their shows & Joey(drummer) would help them all night with sound & setup. We get so much inspiration and knowledge from those dudes. Playing shows along side them at Beachside Tavern this year was a dream of ours back then. Now it happens all the time! Where will the band be 5 years from now? We will be playing a show at Red Rock amphitheater in Colorado in 5 years, get your tix now Hahaha, The Sky Is The Limit!! Shoot, if you asked us that 5 years ago, non of us even played instruments lol. Get ready If you could tour with any band of your choosing, who would it be with? We all share a very heavy love for Rebelution & Stick Figure, so both lol. Since we cover so many of their songs, we constantly laugh about our undercover name being "RebelFigure"! Wow, what would we call the tour & who's coming?

Tavern in New Smyrna Beach, FL. It brings the best local crowd and is convenient for most of our friends & family, plus the sound is always great there. If you had to describe your music in less than five words... Organic. Coastal. Reggae. Rock. What do you think your "greatest opportunity" has been thus far in your music career? So far we have been very fortunate to open up for and play along side acts like The Original Wailers, Ballyhoo, and The Toasters! Something we enjoy even more is being able to play for charity events like Relay For Life and even hanging at the Daytona Beach Farmers Market jamming out from time to time. We want to recognize our first real opportunity and that was to play at Ricks Surf Bar in Daytona Beach every Friday for our first real year of gigging. We have learned a lot since then and want to say thank you to Rick Gehris and crew for always treating us like family. Anything you'd like to add? The stage is yours. We want to say "So Much Love" to ALL our followers, friends, & family for helping us get to where we are today.. Thank you!! We are all Brothers & Sisters Within and that's the message we are bringing at every show & with every song we create!... Check out our upcoming events/ dates at www.BrothersWithin.com!

GULF COAST FISHING WEST CENTRAL FLORIDA

Photos: COLOR BLIND MEDIA

Sarasota County, situated on the Florida Gulf Coast, is a paradise for fishermen. From north of Sarasota to south of Venice, it's a hot spot for fishing, mainly because of the wide variety of options. The big allure for fishing enthusiasts is the diversity of gamefish that call these warm gulf waters home all year long. Some of the most

24

sought-after gamefish for anglers are tarpon, spotted sea trout, snook, and redfish. This particular part of Florida’s coastline has hundreds of islands and an endless shoreline providing rich seagrass beds that attract all manner of saltwater fish. In addition, this area boasts a diverse wildlife ecosystem of fish, birds, and mammals.

With world famous beaches, picturesque golf courses, a rich historical architecture, and beautiful sunsets, it truly is a location that should be at the top of your list! Sarasota, Siesta Key, Lido Key, Venice, and all the surrounding coastal towns are an outdoorsman's paradise. For fishermen it boasts the perfect combination of a diverse habitat, interconnected waterways, and subtropical climate. Wham-mo! Could you ask for anything else?!! One of the best attributes of this area is it offers ample fishing opportunities from fishing piers, bridges, canal banks, and even right off the beach. Although we highly recommend supporting the local charter community, it's nice to know that you have the option of exploring on your own.

The vast majority of anglers visiting this area focus their attention on bay or offshore, which offers a wide variety of species and many different setups. From seagrass beds to offshore reefs and wrecks, you’re sure to have an experience that will keep you coming back each season for more. For those ready to experience some inshore local action, the backwaters and mangroves provide habitat for snook, redfish, mangrove snapper, and sheepshead. While in the backwaters and flats, these grasses provide a nursery for fishes, if you are lucky, you could land a spotted seatrout, redfish, flounder or even tarpon. Fish tend to hang out wherever there are structures, rocks, and oyster bars. Sarasota County has many such places along with artificial reefs guaranteeing some nice catches. Whether you are a tourist or a local, you will find some rewarding fishing in the area. Sarasota County is already known for its beaches, dining, and golf. Fishing adds another dimension to this area’s fun outdoor amenities. Take advantage of this prime time location, and book your next fishing trip to Sarasota County now!

LOCAL PROFILE - FISHING GUIDE

LOCAL CHARTER:

CANA SPORT FISHING CAPT. EDDIE OLIVERAS

28 26

What are three items you never leave the dock without? My CANA hat, my Costa’s, and my Manley pliers. What is your favorite species to target? The Sailfish, fastest fish in the ocean, can change colors, and jump just. They’re a magical critter. Preferred Rig? Floss-rigged naked ballyhoo on a Mustard 7/0 circle hook. It can catch anything that swims. Why types of fishing charters do you offer? We do half day and full day trips. The time we get dictates what we target. My most popular trip is a 10 hour, so we can troll and drift for bottom fish. It’s the best of both worlds. Who is your favorite person to fish with and why? My charters, not to sound corny. We all fish a lot if you live here, so the thrill the tourists have when hooked up makes it so fun. How did you come up with your name, Cana Sport Fishing? Cana means? Lots of funny reasons but my chick is "Dominicana" and I got a little boat, so I had to shorten it up. Name a boat after a woman, and they take care of you, if you take care of them right. What attributes separate an OK fishing guide compared to what you would consider a great guide? It's all about how I'm treated. I booked lots of captains and guides before I started and maybe 2 of a dozen captains deserved the title. Let's face it, charter fishing is a luxury hobby and each guest deserves to be treated like a VIP. Not to kiss their ass but treated with the utmost respect. Especially families with kids, I consider anyone on the boat my family. What do you feel is the biggest challenge with being a guide in our area? Regulation. These federal regulations have put most the fish houses out of business and now going after the charter captains. It's to the point I regularly check them every week, sometimes while I'm fishing, to make sure I'm within the law. Not many industries can you say you fear the government where they can and will put you out of business at any time without argument. It's crazy! Can you tell me about how you got into guiding and how you got to where you are today? That's a long story but the short version is I love to fish. And I love to take friends fishing. I dropped out of college at Embry Riddle in Daytona when my mom got sick and went to work immediately in case my

dad had to take care of the household alone. Luckily she made it ok, but I was done with school. I knew 3D CAD design and started my first business at 21. As my career evolved I made enough to get out of the rat race and move to the beach. Now mama has her own condo, we both work 7 days a week to say we are beach bums, and wouldn't have it any other way. Do you fish tournaments? Oh ya, I love competition. I practice my smack talk daily. Do you have a rival when it comes to fishing competitively? Yes of course, that's all my other charter captains. Freddie, Damien, Timmy, Kill Bill, all them knuckleheads drive me nuts when I'm having a slow day and I hear "Gotemon" with minutes to spare of a billfish tournament. What’s your most embarrassing fishing story/memory? Well, I have a bunch but my worst memory is when I ran out of fuel with some friends and had to be towed back by a fellow captain. I almost quit being a charter boat captain out of shame. I stayed in the engine room for 2 weeks until I felt like I had a handle on all my systems. It was humbling and nobody got hurt. I hate screwing up. Where else, besides Florida, have you had the opportunity to fish? All over Florida, the Caribbean and a little freshwater stuff in the mountains. That's enough to fill a dozen lifetimes. Any last words or people to thank? I'd like to take the opportunity to thank the readers for checking me out. It's an undeserved honor to be accepted so fast in this community and make so many amazing friends here. I hope I get to fish with all of ya! Visit: www.canasportfishing.com or call (386)516-3474 for more details.

LOCAL BUISNESS SPOTLIGHT:

GRANADA SURF SHOP Wouldn't it be the most wonderful thing ever if you could do something you enjoy and are super passionate about? That is easier said than done, but Dave and Rebecca Mongeau have made their dream a reality. This husband and wife team are the perfect duo to launch a business that caters to locals and tourist alike. Not only do they share a passion for living the beach/river life, but they also truly love interacting with people. That passion for helping each customer that walks through the door has created the perfect recipe for a new local business in our area and is the core of their mission of the Granada Surf Shop. Lets hear more about this new exciting shop in Ormond Beach. What were the driving factors that motivated you to open your shop? I have been in and out of the surf/skate industry since 1989 and I always knew I would own a related retail shop. Owning my own surf shop has been a serious dream since about 1995. I really started to get serious about it after losing both of my parents between 2010 and 2014. It helped me realize how short and precious Life can be, and I should quit wasting time. My beautiful wife, Rebecca, and my longtime friend and Contractor, Tommy Flositz, pushed me and gave me the courage to finally pull the trigger. We have lived in Ormond Beach since 1998 and we knew this town would support a new local, small surf shop. Besides all of that, I can’t stand wearing shoes, let alone a suit and tie! What have you enjoyed the most about this new adventure? Meeting awesome people from all over the country. You never know who will walk through the front door. Just yesterday, a relative from Ohio walked through our front door. He had been following us on Facebook and decided to surprise us while passing through town. We haven’t seen him in over 3 years. I ain’t gonna lie, it feels pretty awesome every time someone buys one of our shop shirts and tells us how much they love our logo! What would you like your surf shop to be known for? We would like our shop to be known for supporting local, Florida surf themed companies. We also support newer smaller up and coming surf themed companies, artists

30

@granadasurfshop

and entrepreneurs, to help the shop stay fresh, different and cutting edge. Which surfboard brands are you carrying? I’m keeping it local by supporting two longtime shapers and friends, Jay Smith (Clever Surfboards) and Craig Cronin (Cronin Surfboards). They have been huge supporters of us and it just makes since to have Florida shapers for Florida waves! We also carry East Coast Paddle Boards and Michael Dolsey Paddle/Surfboards. What has the feedback been from the locals? The locals have come out strong and many of them remember hanging out in the original Granada Surf Shop circa late 70’s early 80’s, here in this very spot. It’s so awesome that they are now bringing their kids and relatives in to check out our shop! This town truly supports small business. Are you teaming up with any local businesses? (Granada Surf Shop has been a sponsor for several Fluid Mag Parties, mucho gracias!) Just in the short time that we have been open, we have done several raffle give-aways during events at Kona, Lulu’s and The 8th Annual Surf Social Fundraiser at The Halifax Historical Museum. We just recently raffled off a paddle board package at Lulu’s Oceanside Grill, benefiting Salty Family Services (Salty Church) and helped Jimmy Hula’s with donations, for their Texas Harvey Trailer Drive, before Irma hit. We will continue to work with and help our local small business community in any way we can, for a good cause. Any last words or shout outs? I would like to thank Glenno (Panama City Bch. Salty Dog). He taught me how to not only run a Surf Shop, but how to manage money seasonally and run a business in general. I would also like to thank every surf rep and surf company who have not only been my friend for many years, but have also believed and supported me and my new venture!! You know who you are!! Thanks to everyone who supports local small business!!

NOV/DEC FISHING OUTLOOK

FISHING REPORT OFFSHORE For all the offshore anglers, the biggest concern are all the elements that are virtually out of our hands. Between all the windy days, and the upwelling from the hurricanes, hasn’t made things too easy for us. The only good news is that many anglers are reporting that they haven’t had to venture quite as far out to find fish. There has been a ton of red snapper, large cobia, and Spanish mackerel being caught recently. It has been a rather slow start so far, but we are hearing reports of few Mahi and Sailfish. Hopefully that should change in the next few weeks to come and the outlook should improve. Bottom fishing has been pretty hot lately. Near shore wrecks from 60-90 feet of water will hold a large variety of fish. Kingfish are plentiful. Triggerfish, lane and mangrove snapper, black sea bass, and large flounder are all possible on these near shore wrecks. Keep a large jig or live bait pitch rod ready for cobia as they are still out there and have been known to follow fish up from the bottom or just come up to the boat to investigate. There is so much that we love about cobia, they fight hard and taste great! Best of luck fellow anglers, get out there and enjoy any time you get off this holiday season.

INSHORE If you can forget about the disaster that Hurricane Irma left on the Caribbean and the Southeast, the weather has been amazing the past month. When forecasting what to expect in the next few months to come, everything is based off of how soon we will see cool temperatures in our area. With cooler temperatures approaching, expect fish to push into creeks and backwater areas. Fishing will still be productive in the early mornings, but the good news is redfish and trout should also feed into the afternoon as the sun warms the water up throughout the day. Free-lined mullet will be your best bet in the back creeks, but fish can also be taken on live shrimp, Gulp baits, DOA’s, and the occasional top water strike. In the backwater, alternative equipment such as paddleboards and kayaks will keep you secluded from the harsh wind that comes as winter approaches. As we close the year out, it couldn’t be a better time to target the docks on the Intracoastal. Pitching live and cut bait under docks in the Intracoastal can produce keeper mangrove snapper, trout, reds, and the occasional small grouper. You will also get lucky with live shrimp around the docks. Bigger flounder, black drum and sheepshead should also start making their way back into the river and around the jetties. Put the time in, the reward will be well worth it!

TALK STORY

TALK STORY: CHARLEY BALDWIN Charlie “CB” Baldwin has been a staple part of the core of our community for many years. He grew up five blocks from Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach. It was the 1950's and there were only 25 surfers in New Smyrna Beach at that time. The only issue was there was basically no surfboards in the area. Everyone would surf on mats or floats back then. Baldwin jumped on his first board at the age of 13 and his life was forever changed. I had the opportunity of growing up a few houses down from CB and his family. His daughters, Marcie and Lindsey, are close friends of mine, and we grew up surfing out front and learning the ropes from their dad. Many of us in the surf industry know Baldwin from his contributions to the surf community that consist of his professional surfing career, founder of Inlet Charlie’s Surf Shop, and most of all from his brand, CB Surfboards. Let’s hear more about the CB, and all the changes he has seen over the years.

Terry Presley, Randy Richenberg, all the Schwoerer brothers, the Johnston brothers, Mike Martin, Bernie, Flea, and on and on. If you can go back 40 years what advice would you give yourself? If I went back 40 years and had to give advice to myself, I wish I would have studied harder in school and surfed more. I really have few regrets. I was going as hard as possible. Training everyday like I still do.

How did you get into building surfboards? I swore I would never build boards but when I got to Hawaii in 1975, Harold Iggy was shaping blanks and selling glass kits. I ordered a 6’10”, a 7’10”, and a 9’6”.. All of them were single wing pin tails, red and yellow tinted single fins. I ended up glassing many more with so many friends out there. Later in 1980 we bought our shop, Inlet Charley’s, and was more or less forced to start making them again, because we were selling 6 a week and could not keep the racks full. Thus the CB logo began. Mike Martin designed it. What was it like in the 60’s and 70's being a surfer in our area? The 60’s were a lot of fun. Eastern standard time, so we surfed at 5 in the morning in the summer. In 1965 I kept a log of the waves and surfed everyday for the whole year, before wetsuits, 365 days. Needless to say I was into it. I won my first event in 1967 on a 9’6” Daytona Reflex. All the Cocoa guys were there, Gary Propper, Mike Tabeling, and Joey Twombley. Joey got second. Miss New Smyrna Beach, Dixie Massey, gave out the trophies. Even the Mayor was there. The 70’s became even more fun. After traveling up the coast with Dick Catri and the Hobie team/ surf jet in the summer of 1970, the next year I won the 1971 East Coast Championship. The first year they had it at the lighthouse. It was double elimination and I lost my first heat. There were 7 more heats I needed to win. The last 2 were against Greg Loehr. I had to beat him twice, because he had not lost. We have been good friends since. He won the next year. All the east coasters were there; Crawford, Tabeling, Rick Raz,

Catri, Mike Beaschen and many more guys you would all recognize. It was by far the best win of my life. I would win it again in 98’, I think. It was probably the best time in my life. Lot of rivalries and lots of friends made. Some really hard surfing going on. The Aloe Up came and Peter Townsend put on a 3 contest series. The east coast was rocking in the pros. We had a beach wagon at the inlet and it became a platform for pro surfing. We even had the head judge of the world, Mike Martin, to referee. He eventually wrote the rule book for the ASP. My last pro event was 1990, I was 40. I got beat by one of the Lopez boys, he was 15. I think it was Cory. I remember he paddled around me at the rock at Jobos and won the heat by a point on a 6’ day. His arms were 6 feet long, maybe more? The business was booming but that darn Charley Kuhn kept beating me and I think I got 17th in almost every event. He had come back from a year off and was ripping. I went back to amateur surfing when my girls started competing 4 or 5 years later. We were all on the ESA All Star Team. Even more fun. 2 East Coast Championships and 2 US Championships for Lindsey and Marcia each. Lots of work and lots of fun. Traveled all over the USA. We were all very grateful. We talked about it often. We talked a lot about family and friends and surfing and the people we met along the way. Who were the top guys at the inlet back in those days? The top guys in the sixties were Bud Wright, Skipper, Gordon, and the “Black Dog” Ronnie Dreggers. Kem McNair, and Tic Parker were the up and comers in NSB. The 70’s top guys were

What is the biggest difference now and when you were growing up in the New Smyrna Beach area? I really don’t see our town being much different than the 60’ and 70’s. A few condos down south plus the inlet condos. There is more business for the local people. It is not out of control yet, but we need to pay attention to our growth and put it out west. Traffic on Flagler Ave is worse but we use to lose 25% of the business every September. There is year around business now and kids don’t have to move like they use to in order to make a living. The process has been good over all. It’s not perfect but better than 10-15 years ago when you could bowl on Flagler Ave because no one was there in the Fall. That really wasn’t so bad, but we barely made through many winters. The inlet was a lot less crowded, which was good. What is our youth lacking? I’m not sure our youth is lacking anything... They’re just different now. My kids are smart and techy like all the young adults and the world is so different. We still have skateboards and surfboards and good families that are, if anything, more involved than in the past. More families paying attention than before. It can only be good and better, especially in the surfing world. The inlet is covered with moms and dads surfing and teaching there kids respect for the ocean and the others they surf with. Surfing etiquette is improving, at least I hope so. Thanks for your time. Any last shout outs or thank you’s? There is a lot of people and family to thank. My mom for telling that lifeguard to let me go outside on that mat, my dad for giving me a car to travel the east coast surfing in competitions, my grandma for loaning me ten grand to buy the shop, Jennifer for working so hard in the shop and raising our girls while I spent countless hours in the factory building surfboards, Father Jim for always checking on me, and last but not least, my rock star doctors, Dr Thill and Dr Pollock, for giving me another chance in life to feel good and surf like a kid. I am truly blessed and have no regrets! See you out there!! I also forgot about the Smyrna Surfari Club that was created in 1979. They ran numerous pro events including the Aloe Up. - Jerm and caleb.
