ATHLETICS FXW’s Athletic Program is an integral part of our commitment to nurturing the whole child. We believe that physical activity promotes mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. The mission of FXW’s Athletic Program is to foster the growth of well-rounded, confident young adults in an age-appropriate manner. Our program emphasizes four key areas: •
Social, emotional, and physical development through athletics
•
Meeting the individual needs of all students
•
Modeling a learning process that includes self-discipline, respect, success, and failure
•
Giving all students the opportunity to participate in athletics
The Athletic Program, starting in grade 2, offers students the opportunity to explore competitive sports in a safe way. Trained coaches emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity and selfdiscipline while commending individual effort and commitment. We also believe that activities on the playing fields and courts are an extension of the classroom. What you need to know to sign up your child/ren for athletics this year: 1. PATH: PARENTS AT THE HEART Mission Parents at the Heart (PATH) is a parent-run committee, which supports the mission of FXW by working with faculty, staff and families to enhance and encourage spirituality through personal support and community-building events. PATH also provides an opportunity for children and parents to utilize their resources and talents to help others within the FXW community.
Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day November 14, 2018 (Pre-K 2-Day and PM) November 16, 2018 Each November, we host over 500 grandparents at the OSP Campus, sharing in crafts, activities and special presentations to grandparents and special friends. Afterwards, we hold a Mass of Thanksgiving at Old St. Patrick’s Church.
Participation
MARDI GRAS March 5, 2019
We welcome all parents at both FXW campuses to participate in the many activities that PATH offers throughout the year. Parents can also volunteer to be a class representative or a general committee member.
PATH’s Mardi Gras celebration is a lively evening of community, friendship, and of course, lots and lots of beads! Music, dancing, face painting, and crafts add to the festivities.
PATH representatives work with the teachers in their child’s class to organize support to families during times of illness, death, births and any life-altering event where the family could use a Good Samaritan.
MOTHERS’ DAY LUNCHEON May 9, 2019
All PATH representatives and committee members are invited to meetings throughout the year and receive information about volunteer opportunities for PATH events.
Events PATH hosts six community-building events each year, starting with our summer event—Movie in the Courtyard, followed by FunFest, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, Mardi Gras, Mothers’ Day Luncheon, and the 8th Grade Ceremony of Recognition and Graduation Reception. FUNFEST September 4, 2018 FXW families are invited to celebrate the beginning of the school year at FunFest. In conjunction with Open House, this outdoor party on Desplaines Street includes live music, a DJ, face painting, bouncy houses and much more.
This lovely event celebrates Mothers’ Day, honoring mothers in the FXW community. FXW mothers are invited and encouraged to bring the other women in their lives for a relaxing luncheon in celebration of motherhood, inspiring mothers and mother figures. CEREMONY OF RECOGNITION AND GRADUATION RECEPTION May 31, 2019 The Ceremony of Recognition is an event where students from the graduating class are recognized for their service to the community. This event is followed by the Graduation Reception to celebrate our new graduates and their families. MOVIE IN THE COURTYARD July 2019 PATH’s summer event “Movie in the Courtyard” will feature a family-friendly movie in a relaxed outdoor setting at OSP. New and returning families are invited to an evening of entertainment and friendship.
Contact Information For additional information about PATH programs, please email us Jessica Hernandez and Jen Jashelski at fxwpath@gmail.com.

Parent participation plays an integral role in the success of these programs. There are short- and long-term volunteer opportunities associated with these efforts. You can get involved by serving as a class ambassador, weekly cheerleader, or on the Thank You Squad. Gala: Saturday, February 23, 2019 Revenue generated by this community-wide celebration, which includes exciting silent and live auctions, supports general school operations and FXW’s portion of scholarship commitment. There are many opportunities for volunteer participation: serve on a planning sub-committee, assist with administrative tasks in the Development Office, work on data entry related to the auction and to attendance, sell raffle tickets, assist with day-of events, including set-up, registration, tear down and clean up, and post event assistance with auction item distribution. Scholarship Dinner: May 10, 2019 Supporting the Children at the Crossroads Foundation, the annual Scholarship Dinner provides funding for scholarships for students to attend FXW. For 28 years, the CATC has provided more than 600 students and their families with scholarship assistance. This is a wonderful event with more than 400 guests who gather in celebration and support to ensure that eager and capable children receive a quality education. CATC Golf Outing: Late Summer The proceeds from this golf fundraiser directly support scholarships at FXW through CATC. You can participate by: serving on the Golf Outing Committee, selling raffle tickets and hole sponsorships, volunteering day-of-event by helping with set-up and registration, raffle ticket sales or serving as a greeter.
If you would like to get involved, please contact Sarah Frick, Director of Advancement at 312.268.2567 or fricks@fxw.org. Please also read the weekly In The Loop postings for updates from the Advancement Office.

Measures to Aid Observance of the Code of Conduct To help me keep the promises in the Code, I WILL: □ Report any suspected child abuse or abuse of a vulnerable adult to the proper authorities. □ Avoid physical contact when alone with a minor or vulnerable adult. Physical contact with minors or vulnerable adults can be misconstrued, especially in private settings.

Obtain written parental/guardian permission before such activities. Permission slips should include the type, locations, dates, and times of the activity and emergency contact numbers.
Practical Suggestions These are some practical suggestions for identifying permissible and impermissible conduct.
Conduct that May Be Permissible Appropriate affection between Church personnel and minors and vulnerable adults constitutes a positive part of Church life and ministry. Nonetheless, any touching can be misunderstood and must be considered with great discretion. Depending on the circumstances, the following forms of affection are customarily (but not always) regarded as appropriate. • Verbal praise • Handshakes • “High-fives” • Pats on the shoulder or back • Hugs (brief) • Holding hands while walking with small children • Sitting beside small children • Kneeling or bending down for hugs from small children • Holding hands during prayer • Pats on the head when culturally appropriate
Conduct that is Not Permissible Some forms of physical affection have been used by adults to initiate inappropriate contact with minors. In order to maintain the safest possible environment for minors and vulnerable adults, the following are examples of affection that are NOT TO BE USED: • Inappropriate or lengthy embraces • Kisses on the mouth • Holding minors over four years old on the lap • Touching buttocks, chest, legs or genital areas • Showing affection in isolated areas such as bedrooms, closets, staff-only areas or other private rooms • Wrestling or tickling minors or vulnerable adults • Piggyback rides • Any type of massage given by minor to adult, or by adult to minor. • Any form of unwanted affection • Compliments that relate to physique or body development

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY (SET) PROGRAM August 2018 Dear Families, We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks for the start of school. As you look to September, you are invited to learn more about our Social Emotional Development and Technology (SET) Program. SET is an outreach program that brings discussions and resources to our FXW families through presentations, grade-level coffee talks, book discussions, and a resource library. We encourage you to participate in these talks and presentations over the course of the year. The SET Program, now in its third year, is the collaboration of FXW’s Academic Technology Coordinator, Library and Media Specialist, and Psychologists. This partnership allows for discussions that cover the overlap between the devices that we use; the social media we participate in; the multiple forms of media surrounding us in our everyday lives; and the nurturing of healthy families. FXW SET events for the 2018-19 school year will focus on: • • •
Helping students develop a healthy and respectful approach to relationships in both the physical and digital spaces we use to interact and communicate with each other. Providing opportunities that create the impetus for ongoing discussions between school and home, between teachers and parents, and between teachers and students. Offering a book and teen panel discussion, a presentation as part of our FXW Speaker Series, as well as grade-level specific parent coffees. Specifically, we would like to invite you to Dr. Jean Twenge’s presentation on iGen on February 6, 2019 and a Teen Panel in the spring of 2019. Look to In The Loop throughout the year for these dates and mark your calendars to join us!
Please take time to check out all the information on the SET Program page on the FXW website. Additionally, we encourage families to speak with their children about internet rules, expectations, and boundaries at home, particularly since 5th-8th graders will be bringing devices home. Our SET Program resource library, located on the FXW website, includes sample device contracts and a customizable media contract. These contracts are good starting points for family discussions about device use, internet use, and participation in social media sites and apps. Look to our page for information on trending topics of interest, our resource library, and our events calendar. We look forward to seeing you at SET events and to the start of a great school year!
