Second Semester Calendar Addendum

Page 1

2018-2019 Second Semester Calendar Addendum As we enter the second half of the school year, we’d like to highlight some opportunities for parents to continue engaging in the life of the School. Parents are welcome to attend some of our studentorientated activities, like the masses and prayer services; others, like many of the service opportunities, are for families to do together; and still others, like the parent coffees and the Maggie Daley Speaker Series, are designed specifically for adults. We encourage you to attend as many of these events as possible as we work together to create the best possible experience both for our students and for our parents. More information about the events below can be found online on Axiom or in In the Loop. January

Maggie Daley Speakers Series In 1989, Maggie Daley came to Father Jack Wall, pastor of Old St. Patrick’s church, with a bold vision. She wanted to create a school where children would become both excellent students and good people. It was to be a place where families would accept and embrace all faiths, all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, and everything that makes us unique. The result of Mrs. Daley’s vision is The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW). We are a community dedicated to faith, service, inclusivity, and outstanding academics. FXW students come from over 60 different zip codes and truly represent the best that Chicago has to offer. We are excited to continue to offer speaking engagements this semester through the Maggie Daley Speaker Series. By providing ongoing opportunities to learn and converse with one another, we are both honoring her vision and carrying forth her legacy for years to come. As our logo suggests, we are certain that this would receive Maggie’s “stamp of approval.” Upcoming events Dr. Jean Twenge February 6, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the HNC Auditorium Dr. Jean Twenge is a psychologist and author of the popular book, iGen: Why Today's SuperConnected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy--and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood. Dr. Twenge will share her research and her ideas on how we can help the iGeneration be healthier and happier during their tween and teen years. This event is hosted by the FXW SET Program. John Franklin April 16, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. in the HNC Auditorium FXW alumnus John Franklin will speak to students and parents about his experiences as an intern for both Google and Pixar, as well as his participation in VHacks, the first-ever student hackathon hosted at Vatican City. Selected last year as Northwestern University’s Co-op Student of the Year, John will also talk about the ways in which FXW prepares students for high school and beyond.
