WELCOME PACKET 2020-2021

Dear FXW Families, We hope you are enjoying your summer. As we trust you know, FXW is committed to and will be ready for a safe and smart start as we return to campus on Tuesday, September 8. Our decision to pivot from full enrollment to providing a hybrid schedule was contingent on several factors, including but not limited to: recent information and research on the greater emphasis of physical spacing, the latest public health guidelines, and the input of our task teams, families and faculty. We are confident we can do this if each of us adheres to the proper protocols such as wearing a mask, being mindful of our spacing within the classroom, practicing good hygiene, and our faculty and staff having the proper protective equipment. Without fail, our plans have prioritized the health and well-being of our faculty and students. While our belief remains that in-person learning is best for both students and faculty, and as the COVID-19 statistics are ever-changing in Chicago and Illinois, we will not compromise the health and well-being of our students or faculty. We believe pivoting to our alternative plans to accommodate smaller cohort sizes with smaller teacher-to-student ratios is the best course of action at this time. At any time if it is safe to return to larger class sizes, or if it best to return to a full remote learning platform, we will do so. We have appreciated your support, your trust, your confidence as well as your input and your patience as we look to the 2020-2021 school year. In this Welcome Packet, you will find important information regarding the start of the school year. Please know that given the current circumstances, some information may be amended or changed depending on goverment guidelines; we will make sure to communicate any pertinant information in a timely and efficient manner should changes need to be made. Finally, it is important you read and acknowledge our Family Commitment to the Health and Safety of our Community, along with additional School policies, which can be found in the Beginning of Year School Policies in the Parent Portal. Some things may look and feel a bit different when we welcome you back on Tuesday, September 8. But no matter what the circumstances, we will continue to be the same resilient community we were before the COVID-19 crisis. We are FXW strong, and we will get through this together. As always, if you have any questions regarding our return to campus, please email loc@fxw.org. See you September 8! The Frances Xavier Warde School Education Team

BACK ON CAMPUS INFO In partnership with our Board of Trustees, school nurses, public health experts, medical professionals, staff, and our administrative team, we believe coming back to school is essential for both the academic and social emotional well-being of our students. The decision to return to campus on September 8 in a hybrid schedule was thoughtful, cautious, and conscious of the varying comfort levels within our community. As always, our top priority is the health, safety, and ongoing well-being of our students, faculty and staff, and parents. •

HYBRID SCHEDULE INFO As we prioritized a reduction in class/cohort sizes, we are excited to announce that we will be able to offer a Hybrid Model and LoC options for the first assessment period for Grades Kindergarten through 8 students. For the 2020/2021 school year, this period runs September through November. Scheduling for our Preschoolers for the first assessment period may include a combination of in-school and LoC options, but more information is forthcoming. For those Preschoolers in the part-time program, there will not be a change in yoru schedule. The Hybrid Model and LoC schedule will parallel one another. As part of this sample schedule, we have provided an OSP video explanation and a HNC video explanation below to help families understand which option may be most suitable for your family. In summary: •

Hybrid Model: We will be dividing our students in Grades K through 8 —Group A will attend classes in-person/on campus on Monday and Tuesday each week and Group B will attend classes inperson/on campus on Thursday and Friday each week. We have reserved Wednesday as a day of Learning off Campus for all students.

Learning off Campus: For those students who have selected LoC for the first assessment period, they will be part of the classroom lessons for live instruction throughout the day (see sample schedule). This includes signing in and out to participate in classes throughout the day, which involves time for connecting with teachers and classmates and independent learning. As we further developed our LoC model this summer, we feel confident and proud that this option is aligned with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements and will work for those learners who will be off campus for the first assessment period.

HNC ANNOUNCEMENTS GRADE 8 MATH UPDATE In an effort to best meet the needs of all of our students this year, all Grade 8 students will be enrolled in Algebra 1. This course will be taught by Steven Ripes and will build on the PreAlgebra concepts taught during the Grade 7 year. Our Algebra 1 course was designed based on data gathered from the many high schools FXW students go on to attend. The course is rooted in our mathematics philosophy of learning through problem solving, and activities are planned to help students develop critical thinking skills and foster perseverance. We are confident that students will be best served by engaging in this higher-level course, and appropriate accommodations and supports will be in place to help students succeed. As an instructional team, which includes Grade 8 Math Teacher Steven Ripes, Math Instructional Coach Amy Bilek, and Math Department Chair Ann Carbonetto, our priority is to meet the needs of all our students, and we are excited to offer this enriching course to all Grade 8 students. About Steven Ripes Mr. Ripes has been teaching mathematics and science professionally for 18 years. His credentials include a B.S. and M.Ed. degree in Mathematics from New Mexico State University and DePaul University, respectively; as well as more than 12 years of continuing professional development. He has taught multiple branches of pure mathematics at the elementary, middle, high school, and college level, domestic and abroad. Mr. Ripes has been teaching Algebra within the FXW community since 2008.

ATHLETICS/EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM/CO-CURRICULARS ATHLETICS/EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM/CO-CURRICULARS UPDATE We remain hopeful we can offer some form of after school activities for our students on both campuses. A critical component to our planning for in-person Athletics, Extended Day, and Co-Curriculars involves ensuring our cohort model can be prioritized. As we plan, we will offer these co-curricular options if we can maintain the well-being of all teachers, staff, and students within the cohort. More information will be forthcoming after the opening of school. CCYL Update The Chicago Catholic Youth League (CCYL) made the decision to postpone all interscholastic athletics and has canceled the 2020 flag football season. The Restore Illinois Plan & FXW Skills and Drills The Restore Illinois Plan mandated protocols and guidelines for all youth and adult recreational sports, including, but not limited to school-based sports (IHSA & IESA), travel clubs, private leagues and clubs, recreational leagues and centers, and park district sports programs. FXW will follow these guidelines as we continue to plan for opportunities to safely engage our students in athletics. To further our plans, we would appreciate your feedback in having your child participate in skills and drills offerings for the following activities: flag football, cross country, volleyball, and basketball. Similar to our Extended Day Program, a critical component to our planning involves ensuring our cohort model can be successful and will protect the good health of all teachers, staff, and students within the cohort. • To take our OSP Athletics survey, click here. • To take our HNC Athletics survey, click here. We appreciate your patience while our team works to determine the next steps. We continue to work with our faculty and third-party vendors to offer virtual co-curricular options. More information will be forthcoming after the opening of school.

All policies and behavior guidelines that cover student and parent conduct on the school premises and at school-related activities similarly apply to the online environment.

The online behavior of all members of the FXW community should reflect the same standards of honesty, respect, and consideration that one would use face-to-face.

PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PAC)

ABOUT The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is a parent-run group that supports the mission of FXW. PAC is the consolidation of the former Parent Group Advisory Board (PGAB) and Parents at the Heart (PATH) into one parent organization. The Parent Advisory Committee serves as a resource for the community and works with faculty, staff, and families to promote FXW spirit by coordinating communitybuilding events, school support, and volunteer opportunities. PARTICIPATION All parents with a child enrolled at FXW are a member of the PAC and are welcome to participate by attending bi-annual meetings, serving as a Committee Lead or PAC Classroom Representative (formerly Room Parent), and volunteering. Getting involved is easy! Announcements for volunteer opportunities are posted in In the Loop, along with links to sign up. COMMITTEE LEADS AND PAC CLASSROOM REPRESENTATIVES PAC Committee Leads coordinate many events and programs throughout the year to serve the community. Serving as a lead is a two-year commitment. Parents can share interest in a role to the PAC Co-Chairs or via the solicitation at the end of the year in In the Loop. With the consolidation of PGAB and PATH into PAC, we will now only have PAC Classroom Representatives (PAC Reps). PAC Reps are the liaison between classroom parents and both the specific classroom teachers and the broader FXW community. In this role, parents assist teachers in coordinating various events and organizing support to classroom families during times of illness, death, births, and any other life-altering event. Parents can express interest in serving as a PAC Rep via survey to come out in August. NEW CHARISM COMMITTEE Our new PAC Charism Committee is the essence of the former Parents at the Heart (PATH). The Charism Committee Leads will continue to support the former PATH events, including Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, Mardi Gras, Mother’s Day Luncheon, Ceremony of Recognition and the Summer Movie Night. In addition, the leads will assist PAC Reps in helping families in need, from arranging for prayers, meals, playdates, carpool help or the mobilization of classroom families during any time of need or transition. 27

CHILDREN AT THE CROSSROADS FOUNDATION (CATC) Children at the Crossroads Foundation (CATC) was created in 1990 on the belief that economic circumstances should not preclude any eager and capable child from receiving a quality education. The Foundation seeks to enrich our community by significantly improving the academic achievement, self-esteem, and life opportunities of school children by offering need-based scholarship support to students attending FXW. Over the last 30 years, CATC has awarded over $15 million in needbased scholarships to nearly 700 FXW students. However, all FXW students—whether they receive a scholarship or not—benefit from being a member of this special community filled with a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. The FXW Advancement Department organizes many events and initiatives through the school year that benefit CATC, including: SCHOLARSHIP DINNER: MAY 14, 2021 The annual Scholarship Dinner provides funding for scholarships for students to attend FXW. This is a wonderful event where CATC supporters and friends gather in celebration and support to ensure that eager and capable children receive a quality education. The format of the event this year has yet to be determined based on the guidelines of the lllinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Restore Illinois, and Be Safe. Chicago. More information is forthcoming. ILLINOIS INVEST IN KIDS ACT The Illinois Invest in Kids Act allows state income tax credits for individual and corporate tax payers who make authorized contributions to a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO). CATC is an approved SGO under the Act. Please contact Sarah Frick for more information.

MAGGIE DALEY SPEAKER SERIES In addition to providing an outstanding education for our students, The Frances Xavier Warde School is also committed to offering learning opportunities for parents, education professionals, and the community at large. Our Maggie Daley Speaker Series provides an ideal forum for us to discuss and explore issues that are vital to our school community and to our city and our world. The focus of these conversations is not on academic achievement per se, but rather on the many factors that helps us to shape confident servant leaders, lifelong learners, and conscientious citizens. In particular, we have focused and will continue to focus on fostering: •

Social-Emotional Learning, including persistence and responsibility, executive functioning, and self- and social-awareness

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, including best practices for creating a truly pluralistic community

A Healthy Family Life, including strategies for navigating technology and social media

In the 2019-2020 school year, we hosted Rosalind Wiseman, thought leader and bestselling author of Queen Bees & Wannabees, Masterminds & Wingmen, as well as Owning Up: Empowering Adolescents to Confront Social Cruelty, Bullying, and Injustice, who discussed young people’s friendships, social media use, gossip, drama, bullying, and the constant pressure to “keep up.” We also virtually hosted Eugenia Cheng, Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Author of The Art of Logic: How to Make Sense in a World that Doesn’t, who discussed how abstract mathematics can help us understand privilege and develop empathy. More information is forthcoming about speakers for the 2020-2021 school year.

EQUITY AND JUSTICE FORUM OBJECTIVE As we plan for a return to campus, we do so within the backdrop of two significant occurrences that will guide our decision-making, that will inform our programmatic initiatives and changes, and will highlight the School’s value proposition by deepening our understanding and appreciation of the FXW mission and Charisms. The Equity and Justice Forum is charged with: 1. providing a space and place for listening, dialogue, and greater understanding about race and racism in our country, especially ideas for dealing with current challenges and planning for a better future; and 2. serving as a catalyst for bridging differences regarding race in America, promoting reconciliation, and encouraging fresh perspectives. AREAS OF FOCUS •

Cultural Competency in Curriculum: Discuss and recommend ways in which to more comprehensively integrate cultural competency into curriculum and pedagogy. Develop strategic initiatives to support diversity and inclusion actionable and measurable steps.

Recruit and Retain Faculty of Color: With the combined forces of our newly appointed HR Director, who for the first time in FXW’s history is a Person of Color (POC), the Director of Mission Integration, and the Leadership Team, undergird, lend ideas and people power to new strategic planning specifically focused on attracting and retaining faculty from underrepresented groups.

Diversity, Equity, and Justice Training for Faculty & Staff: In addition to SEED and ongoing professional development training with experts in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) field, discuss inclusive cultural competency and anti-racist training for faculty and staff. For Faculty and Staff leadership, determine best approach for proactively engaging with constituents to ensure students feel safe and supported.

Community (Students, Parents, Faculty, & Staff): Determine measures FXW can take to provide a more inclusive culture while determining the best approach for proactively engaging with all students, FAS, and parents to ensure everyone feels safe and further foster a culture of inclusion.

Admissions Recruitment and Retention of Families of Color: Recommend additional ways in which to provide support to the Admissions Team and develop a sustainable plan for the recruitment and retention of families of color.
