Gulfportian of the Year: Tom Nicholls By Patrick Heinzen
CATHY SALUSTRI
Tom Nicholls — and his entire department — has earned the honor of Gulfportian of the Year!
With the start of a new year, The Gabber Newspaper looks backwards to what made Gulfport great in 2023. While the city as a community works together to make things great, we’d
like to recognize one member of the community who continues to contribute to Gulfport. This year’s Gulfportian of the Year is Tom Nicholls — and his staff.
The 2023 Gulfportian of the Year Nicholls is the City’s Public Works director. He had a hand in nearly Nicholls continued on page 5

Art and Conservation Robert and I want to thank you for the wonderful article you wrote: Wild Space Gallery Connects Art and Conservation. It is clear [Amanda Hagood] really looked at the work in our exhibition and developed [her] own interpretation of the art. We so very much appreciate how you thought about the show and how clear and detailed an article you wrote. Thank you, —Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse
American Politics Two issues back a letter was published favorable to Donald Trump, our 45th president and candidate to become our 47th. In this week’s issue Susan Bullard disputes the earlier writer’s “facts” and opines the U.S. economy is in good shape by stating “the stock market just hit an all-time high; unemployment is down; hiring is up.” Last week’s writer also wonders how Biden is responsible for the state of the world? I encourage The Gabber Newspaper readers to look deeper and assess the U.S. economy and consider the underlying causes. Inflation has reached the highest point in decades and created a dearth of economic woes on our people. Stock market highs are facilitated by high inflation, thus, in the presence of higher inflation the market is not an indicator of a successful economic policy.
With respect to low unemployment, that measure is impacted by a significant increase in people leaving the workforce. And then, we see Putin and Hamas named as scapegoats for a warring state of the world. Putin and Hamas have been threats to world peace for decades. Biden enabled both threats by reducing our petroleum resources thereby facilitating Putin and Hamas (controlled by Iran) attacks on Ukraine and Israel. Of course, no Biden supporter will address the crisis at our southern border and somehow explain how an open border policy will improve life in the U.S. I can state with certainty that the Biden policy is a major departure from Trump and will expose our country to threats previously unimagined. —David Berg, Gulfport
Commissioners Resign I don’t think the state has a right to your financial records. However, I do think that we need complete accountability from all government leaders and we need penalties for government officials that break the law or violate the constitution and until that happens it doesn’t really matter what the state does. —Richard Jones, via Facebook

on 52nd Street. We went to see it and it is so magnificent. We are wondering what the City can do to save this beautiful tree? Or is there a nonprofit organization in town that would help us save this tree? It would be a real shame to lose this piece of our history. Just looking at it is awe-inspiring, to think of how long it has been there. Seeing it surrounded by the orange barrier fence seems so incongruous, its gorgeous branches reaching out. Are there any other folks who want to save this tree? —Arlene Zaucha, Gulfport

Gulfport Councilmember Uses City Email for Campaigning Gulfport City Councilmember April Thanos used her City email to ask a resident to support her campaign. In the thread of emails, the resident previously asked for help with a playground concern. According to Florida State Statute 106.15, using a government email address to campaign is illegal. The law states, “A candidate may not, in the furtherance of his or her candidacy for nomination or election to public office in any election, use the services of any state, county, municipal, or district officer or employee during working hours.” April Thanos’ City Email Overall, there are two instances of this happening during Thanos’ campaign. The first happened on Dec. 12, during an interaction between Thanos and a resident. Here, the resident reached out to Thanos to thank her for meeting with him, and then proceeded to ask her for a yard sign to support her campaign. The second instance happened on Dec. 9, where Thanos replied to a thread of emails from May, which talked about an issue that a resident had noticed with the playground downtown. The email reads, “I am hoping you will endorse me for my campaign website and perhaps take a yard sign. Thanks, April.” Response From Thanos Thanos says these are the only moments where this happened. “One of them was someone asking me for a yard sign, the other was a mistake,” said Thanos. “I thought I was in my other email when I sent that. I am not regularly campaigning with my City email.” The Gabber Newspaper first received this information from Alex Duensing, a resident who is working as the campaign manager for Thanos’ opponent, Tom Bixler.

Gulfport Councilmember April Thanos used her City email to campaign for the upcoming Ward I election.
“Part of my job is opposition research,” said Duensing. “It isn’t my job to try to disparage the opponent, but the public needs to know about things like this. It is an important part of the political process, and the public records keeps officials honest. I’m trying to run a clean campaign.” Campaigning Bixler reiterated this, adding that he is simply trying to focus on his campaign. “This is inappropriate and unethical for someone in office,” said Bixler. “People should know that an incumbent is using city resources for a personal campaign.”
Thanos disagreed with Duensing’s claim that he wants to run a clean campaign. This comes after numerous instances of campaign signs for both Thanos and Bixler getting removed from residences and businesses. Both Thanos and Bixler deny that they were involved in this. “Tommie [Bixler] told me he wanted a clean race, but I guess that isn’t what we’re going to get,” said Thanos. “I’m going to continue doing research on him.” With Gulfport’s elections coming up in March, Bixler and Duensing don’t believe they are going to file an ethics violation at the moment, but will continue using the public records system to do research on Thanos.

“We’ve got quite a few projects underway,” said Nicholls. “We’re doing sewer repairs, a vulnerability assessment to make the city more durable, 49th Street Safety improvements, the new senior center, and improvements to 58th Street.” Overall, Nicholls is thankful for the City and the way he is able to operate. “There is very little bureaucracy when it comes to my job,” said Nicholls. “You gotta love small government.” Nicholls believes that his role in the city goes beyond something he has to do, and is more something he wants to do. “I have so much fun doing what I do,” said Nicholls. “I look forward to coming in to work every day.” How Do We Choose?

all of the major improvements to Gulfport in 2023. From stormwater cleanup to trash collection, Nicholls’ work for the City cannot go unnoticed — or uncelebrated. “None of what I do would be possible without my amazing staff,” said Nicholls. “They’re a group that just gets it. They make me look good.” Nicholls has worked with the City for seven years, six of them as the public works director. His first year he was the public works superintendent.
“We have a very tight knit and engaged community,” said Nicholls. “People will call me directly with issues. They think they’re bothering me, but I love it. We need to know about these issues so we can solve them, or educate the public on why things are the way they are.” Nicholls’ Gratitude Additionally, Nicholls expressed excitement for the future of Gulfport and all of the work he has laid out for him.

How do we choose the Gulfportian of the Year? At the end of each year, we look to the members of the community who dedicated their time to serve the city in various ways. This can be everyone from residents, business owners, City employees, and whoever has been good to Gulfport. Through careful consideration, we decided that Nicholls and his Public Works team best represents the spirit of Gulfportian of the Year. His service to the city and to the community does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. One of our contributors didn’t know Nicholls by name but said “whoever was responsible for the pickleball courts” should get the honor.

There was a time when a drag show in Gulfport on the first day of Pride Month wouldn’t have been big news, let alone landed on the front page of The Gabber Newspaper. But that was then. This is now. In Florida’s current anti-drag, anti-trans climate, Drag at the Hickman on June 1 could be viewed as an act of defiance: a declaration of queer joy and a celebration of an art form that has been a mainstay of popular entertainment from Shakespeare to RuPaul, from Milton Berle to Mrs. Doubtfire. Even more important is the beneficiary: the Gulfport Public Library’s renowned LGBTQ+ Resource Center, a collection of more than 10,000 books, CDs, DVDs and online materials. The Center’s the only one of its kind in a Florida public library. In this time of book-ban hysteria, support of a public institution that shares information for and about LGBTQ+ lives is more crucial than ever. Hosting a drag show at the Catherine Hickman Theater wasn’t the Resource Center’s first idea for Pride month. The Center, known for such programs as its popular ReadOut literary festival in February, planned

This is the third installment of the competition for Pet Mayor, having started out in the winter of 20192020, before taking a “pawse” due to the pandemic, and restarting a year ago. About 20 animals have participated each year, according to Amanda Hagood, who is one of the coordinators of the event on behalf of the Gulfport Historical Society. Last year there were a number of dogs and cats as well as one chicken. “We are absolutely wanting to promote all of God’s creatures,” she said. “We would love to see

In November, we celebrate and remember National American Indian Heritage Month. The month offers the chance to look into the culture and history and how it helped create the cohesive landscape of Tampa Bay. There are several areas around Tampa Bay where one can see past and present American Indian culture. Like the ancient shell mounds on Weedon Island where coastal communities would pile oyster and clam shells after a successful harvest, or the Seminole Hard Rock in Tampa. Yet a somewhat surprising location to find American Indian culture is on the campus of St. Petersburg’s Eckerd College.

A Watery Winter Storm By Patrick Heinzen
During the early hours of Dec. 17, Gulfport was hit with flood levels rivaling those seen during Hurricane Idalia. For the whole previous day, Florida experienced rain and wind from a storm that made its way up the east coast. When high tide hit in the early morning hours, it brought water into the streets and businesses along Beach and Shore Boulevards. According to business owners, water reached levels comparable to those seen during Hurricane Idalia. This flooding caused a slew of problems for these businesses, from damaging merchandise to keeping stores closed. Flooding Issues

On July 26 at 9 a.m. in Belleair Beach, Kelli Hammer Levy delivered the same alarming news to the 11 mayors of Pinellas County beach cities as she did the night before in St. Pete Beach. “The Army Corps of Engineers will not be renourishing our beaches this year,” Levy announced.

SPCA Tampa Bay’s new, unlikely partnership and pilot program with a puppy broker and the owner of two Tampa Bay area puppy stores is raising hackles in the Tampa Bay rescue community. The For All Dogs program currently involves the regional SPCA animal welfare group placing adult dogs from Missouri-based puppy broker Pinnacle Pet in the Largo shelter. It also includes a deal to provide veterinary services to Sunshine Puppies, which operates stores on Ulmerton Road in Largo and Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard in Clearwater. The partnership has stirred questions, scrutiny, and emotional opposition in animal rescue circles, where many hold dim views of puppy breeders and retailers. Pinellas County has six such retailers, all grandfathered in under new regulations and restrictions on new stores passed by the county commissioners in 2022.

Pop Off, Queens! Gulfport gears up for GeckoFest by offering opportunities to celebrate the end of summer with flare and Gecko fashion. The annual Gecko Ball brings the community together for a night of live music, dancing, costume contests, and the Gecko Queen coronation. The 2023 ball marks 10 years of Gecko queens. This year’s theme is “Around the World in 80 Geckos,” which people voted on through social media channels. The Gecko Queen is a gender-neutral competition between self-nominating adults who are 21 years and older. The queen must exemplify the spirit of Gulfport: positivity, charisma, high energy, kindness, and compassion. The Gecko Queen will get crowned at the Gecko Ball and maintain royalty for a year, reigning as the honorary queen and acting as an ambassador for the city’s social scene. The Gulfport Merchants Chamber made changes to how the Queen is selected this year. Instead of a committee decision, the communi-

A Step Toward a Greener Future
Duke Energy’s Floating Solar Farm Furthers Renewable Energy By Aaron Chimelis
AUDREY STASKO
This solar farm floats in a retention pond in Bartlow.
Floating amongst the waves of a retention pond lies what Duke Energy hopes to be one of many new pilot programs aiming towards a greener future: a floating solar farm. The Duke Energy facility in Bartow, about 90 minutes inland from Gulfport, hosts the floating solar panels. Here, the company tests the pilot projects of panels along with several other more sustainable sources of energy. Included in these pilot projects are innovative ways to store energy through battery technology and “green hydrogen” or hydrogen derived from non-fossil fuel sources, such as through electrolysis. This process splits water molecules
into hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The oxygen gets released into the atmosphere and hydrogen powers electronics and other forms of technology. “It’s pretty equivalent to ground solar,” said Project Manager Shayna Fraleigh. “We can build [floating panels] pretty efficiently.” Fraleigh oversaw the development and implementation of the floating solar panels from the project’s beginning in March. The project finally reached completion in October of 2023. The panels are tied into the existing Duke Energy grid. These panels produce around one megawatt of energy

and can power roughly 100 homes annually — when they operate at full capacity. Duke Energy’s Floating Solar Farms Floating solar panels serve several benefits when it comes to their implementation at Duke’s power plant as well. The water from the retention pond cools the panels, which makes them function smoother. Additionally, the large-scale implementation of the panels over areas of the retention pond helps limit eutrophication, or algae growth within the man-made pond. Along with this, the panels help cap water loss through limiting evaporation. Currently, all water within the pond is captured from local areas and rainfall and funneled into the pond. This makes limiting evaporation anappealing by-product of floating solar panels. The solar panels cover around two

acres of the large pond. These larger benefits will not be felt just yet. However, Fraleigh said that if the pilot project is successful, Duke Energy would like to expand outward across larger areas of the retention pond. Duke Energy constructed the panels in modular sections, which would make expansion relatively easy. This would lead to more energy output and would add renewable energy benefits for Duke customers. “We’re excited,” said Senior Communications Consultant Audrey Stasko. “It is just another example of how Duke is trying to get closer to cleaner energy.” At its current size, local wildlife seems unaffected, according to Duke Energy. Duke officials state that they often see numerous birds and alligators using the floating panels as basking areas out over the water.

A Greener Future Stasko said these projects are the beginning of what Duke hopes is a variety of different scaleable energy in-
stallations. What she means by this is the installations can help supplement already existing energy reserves created through the use of natural gas. “Duke is looking to meet the [energy] demands of today and to look to the future,” Stasko said. Now, do not expect your entire household to run on only floating solar panels any time soon. However, as renewable energy becomes more and more advanced, scientists say that power grids will continue to advance with it. These power grids rely on combinations of different green energy sources instead of solely one or two sources of fossil fuels. If you would like to become more involved with renewable energy under Duke, Staska says that there are multiple programs in Florida that help homeowners install solar on their roofs. Within Duke’s power grid, any access power caught from your panels can be sold back to Duke. This creates a “win-win” scenario for customers, Duke Energy, and the planet.

At the end of the day, it is custom amongst my people to back up to the dumpster in the Parks Department “yard” and clean out the day’s refuse from one’s truck. Random pieces of litter, flowering weeds that were pulled, misplaced religious and/or real estate signage,
single socks, pairs of shoes, errant wefts, and weave of hair comprise but a mere sampling of the day’s terrestrial debris. Adding to the truck bed’s daily cache is the beach, bay, and bayou bilge. Plastic bottles, chicken bones, unknown bones, pieces of boats,

One day of cast-offs go into the Big Green Rectangle of Refuse. Which brings us to the inevitable metaphorical trash heap of occurrences, concepts, and ideas that need to be thrown in there and set on fire. Here’s a sample of what goes in Toffer’s Dumpster, circa 2023:
Plan for the worst. If your plants died from saltwater intrusion, replant with plants that love salt water. Face it, you have waterfront property. 2. Reconsider that landscape fabric Back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, a ridiculously thin layer of asphalt was poured over your old lawn before the pebbles and shell were dumped on top. I know, because I removed most of it in the ‘80s and ‘90s. It was aw-

ful, but it could be removed. No one can remove that petroleum-based stuff you’re pinning down. Ever. Instead, try cardboard combined with a weekly flame-throwing session. No, it will not catch on fire. Unless you’re really stupid, then you get to go to the burning dumpster. 3. Red mulch It’s ugly and you must face reality. Try brown or black mulch instead. 4. Single hedgerows of areca (bamboo) palm or clusia (autograph/signature plant) Yes, they are beautiful and fast growing. But, in spite of a warming trend, we will eventually have a
freeze, which will cripple or kill them. But, see, your neighbors will still be there — along with their McMansion. They’ll be 5-10 years older, uglier, and meaner. So, for the sake of peace and the American way of life, interplant these two species with a plant that won’t freeze. You might only have half the privacy for a couple of years, but your newly formed cataracts will make up the difference. 5. Mean people who cut down trees on weekends “It’s just a trash tree,” they say. “You don’t need a permit,” they continue. Then, the Grand Mistake. (They call the Old Lady with Skinny Legs in Civilian Clothes “stupid” and “ugly.”) They could be right — who
cares at my age? — but about the trees, they lie. Being caught could cost you thousands of dollars. You’ll get to cut your trash tree (or your grand oak) down but for God’s sake pay the measly few bucks in permit fees so I can buy more trees for your nasty little children’s children. Urgent? Indeed. Just saying. Right to the dumpster. Time to go pick up some lighter fluid and a reusable torch. 2024 calls and I must go! Scrambling to Govern
What’s Next for St. Pete Beach Following the resignation of four of the five commissioners, the mayor and city staff continue to deal with St. Pete Beach commissioner resignations and vacancies. At the end of December, the City held special commission meetings to determine interim commissioners for Districts 1-4. To find candidates, the city clerk asked for letters of interest from residents. From those letters, the commission filled three of the four vacancies. District 1 Karen Marriott will represent District 1 until voters elect a representative in the March elections. Marriott is also running for the District 1 seat, against Lisa Reich. Reich, who initially submitted a letter of interest for the interim position, withdrew her letter. She asked the commission to leave the seat open, saying she believed it would give an unfair advantage to the candidate who sat in the interim seat. A third resident, Deb Edney, submitted a letter as well. The commission appointed Marriott. Reich and Marriott will face off for the District 1 seat in March.

arts Haunted Inns, Devious Ghosts, and a Clever Cat Tara Lush’s First Crescent Moon Mystery, ‘Eat, Pray, Hex’ Every year, I go to Goodreads and set my reading goal for the year. Some years I get too ambitious (did I really think I’d read 85 books in 2020?), but other years, I hit the goal (in 2023, I passed the goal, because, well, it’s not as though I was doing much else). Either way, I enjoy discovering new books and new writers. I also enjoy my tried-and-true authors. These writers don’t write fast enough to suit me; I’d be happy with a book a week from writers like Raquel V. Reyes, James Swain, and Davida Breier. Add Tara Lush to that list. I’m already a fan of her Coffee Lovers Mysteries (with Devil’s Beach set in a beach town that appears to be the love child of Gulfport and Sanibel, how could you not love the series?), and she’s writing another series now, also set in Florida. The first book in the Crescent Moon Mysteries, Eat, Pray, Hex, takes readers to a mythical Central Florida city that’s definitely not Cassadaga, but it’s a lot like it.
TARA LUSH
By Cathy Salustri
Welcome to Cypress Grove From the first few pages, it’s clear that Lush spent as much time crafting the town surrounding the Crescent Moon Inn as she has any of the characters. Lush based Cypress Grove, she told me, “loosely Cassadaga plus Gulfport,” adding that “Gulfport really is the best mystery setting.” She’s not wrong, although one would hope the Crescent Moon Inn isn’t based on the Historic Peninsula Inn. While some suggest the Peninsula has a ghost, no one’s suggested that ghost is as devious at the one at the Crescent Moon Inn. What does that ghost do that’s so horrible? He breaks the air conditioning. In the summer. Forget Grady Hendrix’s How To Sell

a Haunted House and Jeff Strand’s Sick House; Lush knows what scares Floridians the most. Without well-developed characters, though, that would be but a gimmick, a cute blurb for a review. Thankfully, Eat, Pray, Hex offers readers so much more. Amelia Matthews shows up in Cypress Grove ready to sell the inn Amelia’s inherited. With her is Freddie, her orange tabby (because if you’re going to live in a town of psychics, you need a familiar.) Selling the inn proves more trou-

blesome than she thought it would be, though, because, yes, it’s haunted. And, of course, this wouldn’t be as delicious of a mystery without the whole “the ghost needs her to solve his murder” element. And, of course, the murderer is still alive — and active in the town. Any more than that would give away too much. And you wouldn’t want that, because you’re going to want to read it for yourself. After all, that Goodreads 2024 Reading Challenge won’t win itself, will it?

Best Taco Tuesday Deals in St. Petersburg and Beaches Say olé for Taco Tuesday! In this edition of The Gabber Newspaper’s Top Tastes, we sampled tacos for the best South Pinellas Taco Tuesday deals. While we focused on food, there were also great bevy specials we stumbled on. With big beers and BOGO margaritas, Tuesdays are no longer only for tacos. By no means are we calling the tacos mentioned below ‘most authentic’ (that’s a separate category of sampling by itself) but they are fantastic local deals you don’t want to miss if you’re on team taco, especially on Tuesdays.

Best Presentation — Mad Beach Cantina ($7.99) On the Gulf Beaches, north of John’s Pass, is Mad Beach Cantina. Spearheaded by Sun Pubs Group, (the same people who drive Caddy’s and MacDinton’s), Mad Beach Cantina is another Tex-Mex restaurant dishing up the ubiquitous fare. For Taco Tuesday, enjoy three street tacos for the price of two. Choose from carne asada ($11.49), beef barbacoa ($8.99), portobello ($10.49), grouper ($11.99) and more. That Tuesday, I sampled the carnitas tacos ($7.99) on corn tortillas. They were simple (garnished with chopped onions and fresh cilantro) and salty, but full of meat. It’s a great price for three tacos that are sure to fill you up. I think the best part of Cantina’s menu is MYO margaritas. Make your own exactly how you like it from the tequila and juices, to garnishes and rims. Cheers! Mad Beach Cantina, 13205 Gulf Lane, Madeira Beach. It’s marinated and slow cooked for hours, making it one of the most tender chicken tacos I’ve ever enjoyed. If you like sides, there’s also a deal with two tacos (beef or chicken) with rice and beans for only $10.95. Plus, enjoy $5 margaritas and $4 Corona/ Modelo beers. What we liked about the tacos were how obviously fresh the ingredients were. The pico was vibrant, the lettuce was crisp, and with the shredded chicken, it made for a damn delicious taco. Twisted Tiki is known for their fun vibe and great music but it should be on your list of eats, too. Twisted Tiki, 340 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach. Empanadas To Die For

What’s an Empanada? Empanadas are fried or baked pastry stuffed with sweet or savory fillings — much like American turnovers, Indian samosas, or Italian calzones. Although rooted in Spanish culture, Latin America is known for some of the most delicious empanadas in the world. Historically, they were oversized hand pies day laborers would bring along for a meal (a commonality across various cultures). Easy to transport and easy to eat, empanadas are the perfect food to tote on the go. At Julio’s Empanadas What began as an empanada food trailer has since morphed into two brick-and-mortar restaurants. Julio’s other location is north on 38th Avenue in St. Pete. The sausage and peppers oozed melty cheese, and the Cuban empanada was chock full of ingredients — more than some of the Cuban sandwiches I’ve had in town. But the ground beef empanada was my favorite. The meat was so juicy and the diced potatoes were so soft that I didn’t care that grease ran down my arm as I stuffed that empanada into my mouth. I had to have more. Julio’s empanadas are filled with ev-

erything from roasted vegetables and eggplant parm, to deviled blue crab and garlic shrimp. All are hand made, and there’s something for all palates. It’s worth noting that the empanadas are offered in two sizes: regular and grande. We ordered the grande ones — and they were huge. We couldn’t fit them all into a large to-go box. The grande empanadas are certainly enough food for a meal on their own but they’re also are great for sharing. Other Food Options The fun doesn’t stop at savory empanadas. Julio also offers salads, tortas, sides, and mofungo with various proteins options. Or, try one of the plates served with rice and beans. Whether you want chicken, beef, salmon, or empanadas, Julio has a combo for you. While you’re there, check out the hefty selection of dessert empanadas (all $4.95) as well as flan ($5.25 half/$19.95 whole) and Tres Leches ($5.95/$21.95) if you have a sweet tooth. Just be sure to mark your calendars for National Empanada Day on April 8. Julio’s Empanadas, 2201 49th St. S., Gulfport. Tues.-Thurs., 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Fri.Sat., 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Sun., 11 a.m.-7 p.m., closed Mondays, 727-235-0350.
