Keeping Up with the Candidates By Patrick Heinzen

Why Did You Run for City Council? Thanos: “I have some things that are unfinished. “I’ve been working on my Gulfport On The Edge series and town halls to engage the community. By the end of 2024 we could do a lot of research into grants and ways we can work on resilience.” Bixler: “I’ve always felt like giving back to the community is important. I think I have good experience from serving on the school board [in Clermont County, OH], and good leadership skills from the military. “I see the need on council to be a positive input to things that are going on, and make meetings more productive. People working collaboratively towards a common good. That’s my goal.”

CITY OF GULFPORT

Gulfport Ward I candidates have hit the new year running. In the race between incumbent April Thanos and challenger Tom Bixler, there’s lots to learn. The Gabber Newspaper spoke with both of them, and asked each of them the same three questions to find out what they hope to accomplish if elected.

What does April Thanos hope to see if she is elected?

What is Right With Gulfport? Thanos: “The location is fabulous. The people are fabulous. The community is fabulous. “The City is generally well run

on a day-to-day basis. We’re very convenient to the rest of Pinellas County.” Bixler: “I’m very happy with our city services like our fire and poCandidates continued on page 8

REMEMBER: Running a paper is not a popularity contest.

American Politics I read The Gabber Newspaper religiously each week (because how else would I know what is going on in Gulfport?), and I am noticing commentary on the national presidential race and talk of politics that will take all the air out of 2024 if we let it. Last week’s letter asks The Gabber Newspaper to “look deeper and assess the US economy and consider the underlying causes.” I implore the editors and writers of The Gabber Newspaper to keep their focus on Gulfport and these local beachside communities of Pinellas County, even in the letters/”Voices” section. There are plenty of news and social media outlets where any person can get involved in as much of that vitriol as they want, but let’s keep this little, quirky Eden and this wonderful weekly above that fray. And a back-and-forth in the “Voices” section does changes nobody’s mind. If I am to understand the Gulfportian way, then I must accept that others will invariably have opinions that may differ from mine on some subjects, and I can be sure to side contrary to other’s opinions on other areas. I still accept you and will treat you with respect until you prove to me that my trust is misplaced. The Gabber Newspaper’s strength lies in local news. Let’s not allow a good paper and an amazing place to live devolve into what I am seeing in the outside world. —Scott Hannon

Gulfport Elections

April Thanos’ Emails

A while ago I left a message on April’s government email account that I wanted a yard sign. I didn’t know this might lead to unintentional inappropriate correspondence. In fact, I believed only she could see the message from me. I did not hear back from April that afternoon but I did receive unexpected knock on my door… Tom Bixler “heard from a council person (I will not name) that I had requested contact.” Only reason I answered the door was because I thought the knocker might be the landscaper. Is it appropriate to pass around messages intended for another? —Frankie Culbertson, via Facebook

After reading The Gabber Newspaper’s full page story on Councilmember Thanos’ reprehensible action of receiving an email Thanking her for all she does for them and asking how a yard sign can be obtained, I had to check the date of my email. No, it wasn’t my letter — must have been another citizen expressing their same appreciation. My Thanos yard sign has also repeatedly been pulled up and thrown in my yard; I imagine because it was not 10’ away from the curb, (had to look that requirement up). Today I came home and found my yard sign moved 15’ from the curb.

Get to Know the Treasure Island City Commission Candidates

PATRICK HEINZEN

PATRICK HEINZEN

By Patrick Heinzen

What does Richard Harris hope to see if he is elected?

What does Arden Dickey hope to see if he is elected?

Treasure Island will elect a new commissioner for District IV. Arden Dickey and Richard Harris both want to serve the City. The Gabber Newspaper spoke with the Treasure Island city commission candidates, and asked each of them the same three questions to find out what they hope to accomplish if elected.

force that can keep the city safe.” Harris: “We have a calm, safe community, with a lot of nice places to go. “We have a great market for tourism and a lot of nice places to stay. We have one of the best beaches in Florida, and good waterways for boating if that is your thing.”

Why Did You Decide to Run for City Commission? Dickey: “I love this community. It’s very well run now, and it is something that I thought about doing in the past, but I didn’t want to jump in before I had the time. “This is a great community and I want it to stay the way it is.” Harris: “I’ve been on the planning and zoning boards since 2013. Treasure Island needs that experience on the commission. “I’ve been a registered civil engineer since 1986. With all the beach problems we’re having, we need that expertise.” What is Right With Treasure Island? Dickey: “The City government is run really well. Learning about the government makes me appreciate what they do more. “We have a good community to live in, and I’d like to keep it that way. I appreciate that we have our local police

4

What Do You Want to Fix on Treasure Island? Dickey: “We have infrastructure issues that need to be addressed. We have serious problems with drainage in areas that are prone to flooding. “We have [had] the Elevate Treasure Island plan for years, but at some point we’re going to have to start the project. I’ve heard a lot of small complaints from residents here and there that can be easily addressed.” Harris: “We need to take care of our beaches, and that just isn’t happening right now. We can’t keep addressing these issues when they happen, and the City needs something more regular and permanent. “We have some challenges downtown, but I think we can focus on a measured quality growth. I don’t want a bunch of tacky strip centers, I want the architects to feel free to unleash their creative abilities. The two biggest things are renovating the central business district, and protecting our beaches.”

Mending the Gap in St. Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach Commission: Learn About the Candidates St. Pete Beach — on top of its recent commissioner resignation woes — has an election in District I. The two candidates are Karen Marriott and challenger Lisa Reich. The Gabber Newspaper attempted to speak with both of them, and asked each of them the same three questions to find out what they hope to accomplish if elected. Note: The Gabber Newspaper reached out to both candidates multiple times through phone, text, and email. The Gabber Newspaper did not receive a response from Lisa Reich. Why Did You Run For City Commission? Marriott: “It seems like people are always looking for someone to fill the spot, instead of trying to fill it themselves. “This job shouldn’t go to the only

person available, it should go to the best person available. I feel that if I’m holding others to that standard, I should hold myself to that standard. I have experience as a business owner, and as a person who has been rehabbing a building into a retail storefront.”

By Patrick Heinzen

What is Right With St. Pete Beach? Marriott: “I think we’re always looking to improve. “Unlike some other cities near us, we have a great mix of residents and tourists. This lets us have a focus on businesses in the City, and how we can improve for everyone.”

The Ethics Of Texting

April Thanos’ Text Raises Eyebrows in Gulfport A mass text sent to some Gulfport voters has some people scratching their heads about how they received the text message. The race for Gulfport’s Ward I continues, with both candidates reaching out to voters in different ways. Residents continue to have questions about the candidates, and how they campaign. This came to a head on the evening of Jan. 5. At 4:26 p.m. many Gulfport residents received a text from 877-393-5741 promoting April Thanos’ campaign. The text read: “Hello! I’m April — your independent voice on the Gulfport City Council. We may not have had the opportunity to meet yet, but you’ve probably seen my work: I sponsored the Gulfport On the Edge Town Hall Series, Ensured City Support for Art in the yard, & more! [sic] I’m inviting you to my upcoming kickoff party so I can meet you in person. I’d also ask you to check your vote by mail status — and mark your calendar for the election, which is Tuesday, March 19th. Thank you! — April Thanos. Text Stop to quit.” Community Concerns April Thanos’ Text

about

Several individuals not associated with either campaign reached out to The Gabber Newspaper and asked how they could receive such a text when they’re on a “do not call” list. In addition, Alex Duensing, the campaign manger for Tom Bixler, reached out to The Gabber Newspaper to discuss this. “FCC regulations say that this isn’t allowed,” said Duensing. “We received the text during Tommie’s meet and greet, and many of the guests were confused and upset about it.” The FCC regulation Duensing references deals with robocalls and robotexts. According to the FCC, a robocall is an autodialed or prerecorded voice call. Texts fall under the same category. The FCC states that these calls and texts are “prohibited to cell phones, pagers or

other mobile devices without the called party’s prior express consent.” However, when it comes to texts, the FCC makes an exception: “Political text messages can be sent without the intended recipient’s prior consent if the message’s sender does not use autodialing technology to send such texts and instead manually dials them.” This is where confusion arose. The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Thanos and her advisor, Jackson McMillan about the text. “It wasn’t sent with an autodialer; I had someone send the text to a list of voters in Gulfport,” said Thanos. McMillan echoed this, going on to say that the campaign used FCC-compliant software that allowed volunteers to dial the numbers and send the text. Although The Gabber Newspaper asked McMillan multiple times for the name of software, he refused to share that information. The Gabber Newspaper also reached out to Thanos; she did not provide the names of the software. Without that information, The Gabber Newspaper has no way of verifying whether or not the campaign used FCC-compliant software.

An Ethics Complaint from a Former Foe On Jan. 5, The Gabber Newspaper received a copy of an ethics complaint filed against Thanos. Former Ward I Councilmember, Dan Liedtke, filed a complaint with the Florida Elections Commission. Liedtke served as the Gulfport Ward I councilmember until Thanos won the race against him in 2020. The complaint includes two charges. The first complaint alleges that “April M. Thanos, in the furtherance of her candidacy for re-election, sent emails from her City of Gulfport email address asking for support of her campaign and coordinating delivery of campaign yard signs. (Exhibits 1 & 2).” The second complaint alleges that “April M. Thanos, in the furtherance of her candidacy for re-election, used and directed the services of a municipal officer (Mark Ottervanger – Code Enforcement Officer) during working hours to assist with the removal of her opponent’s campaign yard signs. (Exhibit 3)” The complaint included copies of the aforementioned emails between Thanos and residents and Thanos and the code enforcement officer. Read this article at thegabber.com to see Exhibit 3.

Voices continued from page 3 Last election season, I had a sign for Councilmember Brown in my yard — nobody touched it or said anything about it. Very civil. Does anyone really want a City Councilmember who is this petty? —Mike Cook, Gulfport Editor’s Note: The Gabber Newspaper included mention of a citizen reaching out to Councilmember Thanos because she mentioned it when we interviewed her; the article, however, focused on emails campaigning Thanos sent from a City of Gulfport email address.

The City has done a great job jumping on repairs and advocating for state funding for them, but we need to continue to look for state funding so it isn’t a burden on residents. “I’m in total agreement with the tree initiative. Break-ins and a Hit-and-Run Crime Coverage in Pinellas County By Mike Sunnucks & Patrick Heinzen

A 78-year-old man shot an intruder who was physically “struggling with” his 74-year-old wife after smashing the front window of their North Redington Beach home with a rock. In response to the wife’s screams for help, the homeowner shot the intruder, as reported by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies from PCSO promptly arrived at Gulf Boulevard just after 3:15 a.m. on Dec. 27, in response to reports of a man standing and yelling. A second 911 call at 3:23 a.m. directed them to a nearby residence on Bath Club Boulevard North. At that location, they found 51-yearold Robert Jackson in the roadway with a single gunshot wound. According to PCSO investigators, Jackson was the man yelling on Gulf Boulevard and then proceeded to the residence smashing through its front window “using a large rock.” “Once inside the residence, Jackson encountered 74-year-old Sherry Treadwell and began to struggle with her physically. Sherry’s husband, 76-year-old John Treadwell, heard her scream his name in distress and saw her struggling with Jackson,” PCSO said in a statement on the incident. That’s when the situation escalated. “Fearing for his and his wife’s safety, John retrieved his firearm and shot Jackson once in the right shoulder. Jackson fled the residence and then attempted to break into another nearby residence unsuccessfully,” the statement continued. “After the failed second burglary attempt, Jackson fled down the street, where he was stopped by responding deputies.” Jackson had non-life threatening injuries after transported to a nearby hospital. He faces burglary with battery and attempted residential burglary charges. Currently held at the Pinellas County Jail, Jackson’s bond is set at $160,000.

Creative Pinellas announced Margaret Murray as its new chief executive officer. Murray’s career revolves around leadership and art.

Creative Pinellas New CEO Creative Pinellas welcomes Margaret Murray into the nonprofit’s chief executive officer position. The Florida native is an active advocate for the arts in Pinellas County. Board President David Warner credits Murray’s “unique combination of arts leadership, local connections, and far-reaching vision” for why the committee selected her. According to Creative Pinellas, Murray began her career in the arts in the music industry. Over time, she

expanded her opportunities by taking on leadership roles in other artistic fields. She had leadership roles with organizations such as the Museum of Fine Arts, freeFall Theatre, the Morean Arts Center, and the Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Murray recently worked with Creative Pinellas in steering CURRENT, the Arts Coast Cultural Plan. This is the first comprehensive study in 18 years of the cultural landscape in Pinellas County. “I am beyond thrilled to continue

the work that the Creative Pinellas team has done to elevate the artistic and cultural communities of Pinellas County,” said Murray. “My work has always been centered firmly in the belief that arts experiences – from murals to operas and beyond – should be easily and freely accessible to all.” Barbara St. Clair retired as CEO on Dec. 20. She said Murray comes with great skills and history for a leadership role. Gulfport Cigar Company Are you looking for somewhere to smoke a cigar in the company of other cigar lovers? The Gulfport Cigar Company recently changed ownership to Rob Burkhart. Burkhart is a Detective Sergeant with the Gulfport Police Department, and a cigar lover in his own right. He bought the shop and lounge on Dec. 1, 2023, and runs it seven days a week after he is done with his police work for the day. “I’ve been a customer since the shop opened up four-and-a-half years ago,” said Burkhart. “I had thought about opening a shop here in the past, but I wasn’t close enough to retirement. When Mike [the previous owner] was thinking about closing it, he asked if I was interested. I just needed approval from my wife and the Chief before I bought it.” Burkhart changed the name from Gulfport Cigars to Gulfport Cigar Company after an issue with log-

ging in to the previous social media accounts for the shop. From there, he made it his goal to make a space in Gulfport for cigar lovers and newcomers alike. To many, cigar culture may be challenging. Whether it be the stigma that surrounds the hobby, or the variety of options they have, getting into cigar smoking can be daunting. This is something that Burkhart wants to change. “I want to give people the ability to learn about cigars in a safe place,” said Burkhart. “There’s cigar store etiquette that we can teach. It isn’t about politics or beliefs, it’s about cigars.”

city whys What’s the Process of Repaving?

A Reader Asks About Street Pavings and Repairs By Patrick Heinzen

PIXABAY

Rob Romero and Paula Broadwater portray an acerbic dance instructor and a widow of a Southern Baptist minister in this two-character comedy

This week, a reader wants to know about the process for Gulfport street paving and repairs.

Question: How does the City of Gulfport prioritize which roads it re-paves? What can a resident do if they want their road re-paved? — Daniel Webb, Gulfport Answer: The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Gulfport’s Public Works director Tom Nicholls about what residents can do to get their streets repaired and repaved. According to Nicholls, the City budgets $400,000 annually for paving. That money covers about two miles of road. Gulfport has 50 miles of paved roads. The process to categorize and repair the roads is similar to the way the City looks at sidewalk repairs. “We hire a contractor to come and assess the roads, and rank them from ‘very poor’ to ‘excellent’,” said Nicholls. “If someone has a specific concern, they can call the City and we can have it analyzed.” Gulfport street paving and repairs began Jan. 2. If you have questions about the process or when your street might get a fresh look, call Gulfport Public Works at 727-8931089.

arts Growing Up Queer in Florida Through the Groves with Anne Hull By Amanda Hagood

Awkward Places An opening scene captures the rich Kodachrome-color feeling of the memoir. A young Hull rides with her father into an orange grove he’s tasked with inspecting: “Slats of raw sunlight bore down through the shade of the trees as the dirty beige Ford moved through the flickering movie. My father studied each tree we rolled past, glaring at it with suspicion, looking for all the ways it might be trying to trick him. He let the car steer itself as he tore the cellophane off a new pack of Winstons.” Even here, the conflicts that will shape Through the Groves begin to emerge. We sense her father’s growing struggle with substance abuse. We perceive the encroaching grove around them. It hints at the deep roots of the citrus industry and the pervasive conservatism it fosters. And we feel Hull’s own awkward place in this space — both as a child sent to work to discourage her dad’s after-hours drink, and later as a queer person coming out to a world that’s not ready to accept her. Here and throughout the story, these vivid moments not only make for glorious reading, they also illuminate, with the brightness of Florida sunshine, complex family relationships that the story explores. Sweltering Isolation For all its nostalgia for Florida’s lost landscapes — replaced by subdivisions, theme parks, and inter-

AMANDA HAGOOD

Pulitzer-winning journalist Anne Hull’s work has taken her to extraordinary places. But the real magic of her new memoir, Through the Groves (Henry Holt and Company, 2023) lies in evoking the ordinary – in stunning ways. From the pre-Disney orange groves of her Plant City childhood to the green bench streets of her St. Pete adolescence, it conjures a coming-ofage tale in potent and poignant detail.

Anne Hull’s memoir, Through the Groves, sets a journalist’s eye for detail on the author’s past, capturing a fascinating portrait of a bygone time in Florida.

states — Through The Groves is not a paean to Florida’s past. Instead, Hull describes a “reptilian assemblage” of growers, poisoned by the pesticides they spray every day. And the “sweltering isolation” of the Hulls’ extended family home. Central Florida is a particular shock for Hull’s artistic mother. She longs for her cosmopolitan roots in Brooklyn and finds solace in her work as a teacher. In another telling scene, a young Hull spots her mother in her element — with fellow teachers in the teachers’ lounge — momentarily relieved of the oppression of her everyday life: “I saw my mother. A crowd was gathered around her, laughing uproariously as she did her Gloria Swanson imitation. Her entire being was electrified in performance, until she

noticed Ceola and me. The sight of us drained the voltage from her body.” Bright Spots The great poet William Wordsworth described the importance of “spots of time.” These formative moments or experiences stick with us and light the way to deeper reflections about life. Hull’s Through the Groves is a whole city sidewalk lit with such illuminating spots. The book has much to teach about a Florida many of us arrived too late to experience. But you don’t have to be a Florida-phile to enjoy this book. Just a person with an interest in how the places where we’re from help create us, push us away, and — often, over time – call us back home again.

Meet Judith — Judith Shakespeare Urbanite Theater’s One-Woman Show By David Warner

SORCHA AUGUSTINE

Livy Scanlon in the title role of Judith at Urbanite. Judith Shakespeare, that is.

What if William Shakespeare, the man who wrote Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night and so many other immortal plays, wasn’t a man at all — but his sister, Judith Shakespeare? That’s the what-if posited in Judith, a wonder of a one-woman show that had its world premiere at Sarasota’s Urbanite Theater on Jan. 5. It’s an exploration of the nature of identity, the transformative power of theater, and the limitations (and untapped potential) of gender — issues as central to Shakespeare’s works as they are vitally relevant today. And thanks to a thoroughly captivating performance by Livy Scanlon, we have no trouble believing (or at least considering) that those insights came from a young woman discovering her full self. Written by Katie Bender and conceived by and developed with Scanlon, Judith is set in late 16th-century England, when Catholicism was viewed as a threat to the crown. Bender imagines (and there is some historic evidence of this) that the authorities suspected Shakespeare and his family of harboring a Jesuit priest. When William flees to avoid prosecution, Judith contrives to pose

as her brother at a London tribunal. To be clear, Shakespeare didn’t have a sister named Judith. She was the invention of novelist Virginia Woolf in her 1928 essay A Room of One’s Own, in which she imagines that had Judith tried to make a mark as a writer she would have been dismissed, seduced and abandoned and would have taken her own life. But that’s not the fate of Bender/ Scanlon’s Judith. She not only passes as William in court, she stays in character, and stays in London. She opens a glove shop (Shakespeare’s father was a glover) and explores her own nascent abilities as a writer named… William Shakespeare. Her talents capture the attention of the brilliant but dissolute playwright Christopher “Kit” Marlowe, she successfully pitches play ideas to theater owner Richard Burbage, and she falls in love, as William, with a woman, a midwife named Agnes. Yes, it’s a lot. But we stay with this increasingly incredible scenario because of Bender’s deft script and the precise physicality and open-faced charm of the toothy, protean Scanlon. Did I mention that she plays not just Judith, but William, Marlowe, Agnes, the invisible judges who beat her at the tribunal and the barflies who best her in a pub brawl? And, with the help of an inspired creative team — director Brendon Fox, lighting designer Michael Pasquini, scenic designer Jeffrey Weber, sound by Rew Tippin, and costumes by Alison Gensmer — she convincingly evokes milieus as varied as a Stratford attic, backstage at the Globe, and Agnes’ verdant garden. Scanlon also includes us, the au-

dience, as partners in her transformation. With house lights fully up at the top, she introduces herself as Olivia “Livy” Scanlon, then takes us through an inventory of the characters she’ll be playing, complete with their varying accents — notably keeping her own American accent as Judith, while the dialects of William and others range across class and region. Later, she takes the action right into the audience, appointing one as Queen Elizabeth, casting the rest of us as a flowing river, asking direct questions about what might happen next. What most impressed me in watching her transformations is what was happening in her eyes. In exchanges between Judith and Marlowe, Judith and Agnes, Scanlon faces us directly, and her laser-sharp focus enables us to know who’s speaking, what they want, and how they are reacting to one another. So many people co-exist in this one actor’s body! But the ultimate point of Judith seems to be that all of us have untapped potential within us. Judith is inspired to write her first sonnet when she sees a country pageant in which the town barkeep plays a mermaid. From that bit of fleeting theatrical magic, she sees that there might be something more for her than assuming the roles assigned her by society, “hand-hammered into the coin of the realm.” She dreams of another possibility — “to be both.” Judith is presented in partnership with The Hanover Theater Repertory in Worcester, MA, where Livy Scanlon is artistic director and where the play will be performed next. It continues at Urbanite Theatre, 1487 2nd St., Sarasota, through Feb. 18, Wednesdays-Sundays. urbanitetheatre.com, 941-321-1397.

gabberlife Sanda, the Sandbag Snowman Here’s One Way to Recycle Sandbags Living next to Boca Ciega Bay, flooding occurs more often than not during hurricane season (or simply on just a rainy day). Although we must transition from the holiday season into the new year, one Gulfport resident created a new holiday friend. Gulfportian Jude Bagatti named this stack of white sandbags wearing green and red winter apparel, Sanda, the Sandbag Snowman. Bagatti said she wondered what she could do with her leftover sandbags from this year’s hurricanes and storms. After Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Idalia, she spread sandbag sand around random parts of her backyard, or to fill litters areas for her cats to relieve on. After the Dec. 17 storm, she had nowhere to dump the sand to put it to new use.

Sanda, the Sandbag Snowman That is when the lightbulb above her head lit up. “The bags were white, perfect to stack (though awkwardly) to create ‘Sanda, my Sandbag Snowman,’ a weird, new Gulfport character,” Bagatti said. “He loiters on the right-of-way on York Street between 11th and 12th Avenues South.” With a drawn-on smiley face

and some buttons on his torso, he brings a silly, goofy vibe to the recent holidays. “Who knows, maybe some of his snowbird relatives may show up

around town for the holidays!” Bagatti joked. Reduce, reuse, and recycle your sandbags in creative ways. Maybe Sanda will make a friend one day.

food Amish Paradise

A Restaurant, Market, and Gift Shop at Yoder’s of Pinecraft When you hear the word ‘snowbird’, the Amish probably aren’t the first people to come to mind. Florida’s Gulf Coast doesn’t only attract midwesterners, New Englanders, and Canadians (and nudists). It’s also home to a population of Amish who settled slightly south the Skyway Bridge. The tiny town of Pinecraft in Sarasota County is one of Florida’s largest Amish communities. Notable by their conservative dress and tricycles en masse, the Amish in Pinecraft have some of the most spectacular food that is a total hidden gem.

Gift Shop I started my adventure at Yoder’s gift shop — a (very) modest version of Gulfport’s Stella’s Sundries. It had cute knick-knacks with Yoder’s logo and a slew of Amish goods from all over the country. Many of the Amish items are imported from Pennsylvania and Ohio, both areas with many Amish communities. I picked up a jar of Yoder’s homemade apple butter ($7.95) and a jar of strawberry jam ($4.98). I couldn’t wait to pop the lids. Gift shop hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Restaurant Next to the Market is Yoder’s restaurant. There was already a line wrapped around the building (and not everyone was Amish) when I arrived at 9 a.m. The restaurant is known for it’s comfort food: plain, simple, and delicious. They pride themselves on their hand-breaded, pressure-cooked fried chicken, which I hear is massive. I’ve read that their pot roast is some of the best around, as are their Amish noodles. But I’ll be honest — I came to Yoder’s for the pie. Restaurant hours: Monday- Friday, 7 a.m.-8 p.m.

Yoder’s of Pinecraft has some of Florida’s best Amish goods. Check out the restaurant, market, and gift shop.

Market/Bakery You can’t miss the market (it houses the bakery). It’s a bright yellow building that welcomes you with a full pie case and deli counter. I walked the aisles of breads, cheeses, cake slices, and take-home meals. I settled on whoopie pies ($5.95), banana bread ($4.95), cannolis ($4.99), dog treats ($5.29 — they looked like Cheez-Its) and a 6-inch coconut cream pie ($14.95). And all for under $40! The banana bread was moist and fresh with pecan pieces sprinkled inside. The whoopie pies had fluffy cream sandwiched between two soft, cakey cookies and the cannolis were rich and snow-covered with

powdered sugar. But the coconut cream pie was divine. Light, airy and with a buttery crust, this pie was perfect. What I love about Amish food is the simplicity of the ingredients and the recipes. They don’t use any fancy cooking methods or techniques; it’s pure homestyle cooking. The baked goods at Yoder’s are not grossly over-sugared, and it’s all made from scratch. In fact, Yoder’s makes more than 100 fresh pies each day, still using Mrs. Yoder’s original recipe. Market hours: Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Yoder’s of Pinecraft, 3434 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota, Mon.-Sat., 8 a.m.-7 p.m., 941-556-7684, yodersrestaurant.com.

Foodie Resolutions

Try Gardening, New Recipes, and Different Restaurants I love the New Year. It’s a fresh start, a blank slate, and an opportunity to make the next 365 days the best ones yet. Yes, I fall into the 20% of Americans who has a New Year resolution to eat healthier and lose weight but that doesn’t mean having to forfeit my foodie adventures. The human tongue has more than 10,000 taste buds that regenerate every couple of weeks, so that’s a lot of potential culinary delight for one palate. Don’t waste it. For 2024, I have resolutions for all you foodies out there:

MORGAN BANNO

Master a New Recipe This past holiday season, I ate an embarrassing amount of rum cake. I tried different versions from various friends, and it inspired me to want to master a rum cake recipe of my own this year. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth but I do love rum and experimenting in the kitchen. Is there a recipe you’ve always wanted to attempt to make? Whether is mastering chocolate soufflés, dumpling-making, or scratch-made cheese, 2024 is the great time to perfect a new recipe. Start a Garden Today’s world of food is all about sustainability. And what’s more farmto-table than growing your own food? If the idea of a whole garden is too overwhelming of an undertaking (or you simply don’t have the space), take a stab at starting an herb garden.

Foodie Resolutions 2024: Herbs are easy to grow and add loads of flavor to your dish.

Herbs can grow inside or out, many offer medicinal benefits, and they elevate any dish in the kitchen. Plus, they’re easy to grow. St. Petersburg gardening expert, Desiree’ Sims, is the owner of Peas & Love — a small gardening business that offers garden coaching, consultation, custom garden design, and more. Desiree’ came out, evaluated my gardening space, and gave me great suggestions and timelines for my planting. So far, 2024 is shaping up to be a tasty year.

Foodies keep an ongoing list of restaurants to try. I’m constantly adding new eateries to my list and saving my favorites in Google Maps. If there’s a joint you’ve been meaning to try, go! You never know what new establishment might rock your soul (and stomach). We hear Concrete Jungle and Sonata are dope. In addition to trying out a restaurant, consider venturing out of your comfort zone and sampling a new food or cuisine that’s foreign to you. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to try camel or lionfish? What about Nikkei, Columbian, or Ukrainian cuisines? All of it is right here in our backyard. If you’re a foodie, make 2024 a flavorful year to remember.
