Neighborhood Fusion By Patrick Heinzen

CAMERON HEALY

Welcome to Fusion 49, a new district in Gulfport and St. Petersburg.

49th Street South has long been the line between Gulfport and St. Petersburg. Despite this, both cities don’t see this as a divide. With the creation of the newly named Fusion 49th Street South Business District, the street, and surrounding area will

benefit from the “fusion” of the two cities. A major part of this is naming the district. The core group members working to build the district got together at The Tiki in Gulfport to discuss possible names. According to the Gulfport City Councilmember

The Gabber Newspaper’s Election Coverage Ethics By Cathy Salustri

Every year during election season, we get questions — and, on occasion, insults —about The Gabber Newspaper’s election coverage. Sometimes, it’s a critic who doesn’t appreciate something we’ve published about someone they support. Other times, readers have questions about why we didn’t publish something about a candidate they don’t like. And still other times, people on both sides of a race will tell us we are “out to get them.” Now seems like a good time to make clear our position on Gulfport elections — as well as elections along the beaches, in South Pasadena, and other South Pinellas Cities. First and foremost, The Gabber Newspaper is nonpartisan. We do not now and will never support or endorse any candidate. Effective April 2021: As owners, we do not donate to any campaign or display campaign signs — and we ask our employees to do the same (caveat: we cannot ask our freelancers to comply with this.) What We Publish As a newspaper, it is not our job to have an opinion about the campaigns and candidates. Our job is to report what happens, what key players say and do, and any legal activity concerning the campaign. This includes reporting on campaign finance, basic investigation into the candidates (and, as warranted, their families), and any unusual activity involving the campaigns. We will report on arrests and ethics issues. We may also report on human rights issues. While the specifics of what we publish every year will vary, as do the specifics of the races, these overarching guidelines steer our editorial team every year. We build coverage around quotes from the candidates, facts, and re-

sponses. Our intention is to show voters as complete and unbiased a character sketch of the candidates as we can. What We Won’t Publish Every year, we receive complaints about stolen campaign signs. People stop us at the grocery store to ask us why we won’t report on what Candidate X said at O’Maddy’s after two chardonnays. We’ve had anonymous notes delivered to us. Readers will not find this sort of coverage in The Gabber Newspaper. When a candidate files a police report on stolen signs and the police arrest someone for the alleged theft, that’s when we’ll report on it. To date, this has not happened. Writing about stolen signs — and this is as predictable a problem as Shore Boulevard flooding during a king tide — takes space and effort away from looking at the candidates in a meaningful way. As for what someone said at a bar, the person telling us needs to have heard this themselves and be willing to go on the record — and that has never been the case. How We Handle Tips As for those anonymous notes, we don’t deal in “anonymous”. Everyone has the right to face their accuser. We need a name and contact information for every tip. That doesn’t mean we’ll quote the tipster, but we do need to speak with them. Election Season Letters to the Editor Up to and including this week, we published letters about local elections, but concerns about equal time and the weaponization of our Voices section have become problematic.

REMEMBER: Ethics is what you do when no one else is watching.

Election Letters Until last week I kept an open mind about who to vote for in the upcoming Ward I election. Your article with the highly judgmental title “Unethical Email” regarding April Thanos was a hatchet job. My take was that the inconsequential use of a city email server on just two occasions was a totally excusable mistake. I would not be surprised if other councilmembers made similar mistakes. The “fact-finding” (read: “muckraking”) mission of Bixler’s campaign manager reminded me of the overblown accusations regarding Clinton’s emails in 2016. Lowering itself to digging up inconsequential dirt on opponents is not the slimy direction I would like to see candidates take in our sweet little city. Though I was undecided and waiting to hear from candidates until I read your article, I could never vote for Tom Bixler now. Sadly, I also must question if The Gabber Newspaper’s slanted coverage is motivated by partisanship. —Michael Barnett, Gulfport

Gulfport Businesses As only a two-plus-year resident of Gulfport, there isn’t a week that goes by that we don’t get our weekly news from The Gabber Newspaper. We appreciate all you do. Our favorite for 2023 was also the Gulfport Soul cover and article.

For 2024 we would love to see more about our local merchants. What is happening with the Peninsula Inn... Will they be doing outside repairs (inside rooms look fabulous). How are the restaurants doing in town? Any updates on the new place opening where Caddy’s was? What is going in the antique shop by The Pearl? How is the new ice cream place doing? What are they all about with plant based ice cream? Even just an “all is well” update or section once a month about a local business is also a great reminder to residents to visit them. Support Alzheimer’s Prevention Efforts in Tampa Bay community

The Active Mind study aims to reduce dementia risk through brain training Researchers at the University of South Florida have received a grant across the next five years from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Aging to continue groundbreaking work in dementia prevention through a clinical research study called Active Mind. The Active Mind study is looking for volunteers who are aged 65 years or older or who have mild cognitive impairment to join the fight in dementia prevention. Persons who do not have dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, have not had a stroke or serious brain injury, but do have some problems with memory may qualify. Researchers are especially interested in enrolling African American and Hispanic American participants. African Americans and Hispanic Americans are at an increased risk for dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. The Active Mind study examines whether computerized brain training can reduce risk of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia prevention research takes on increased urgency as no proven treatments exist to cure Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, which affects more than 5 million Americans. The Active Mind study builds on research by the study scientists showing that certain computerized brain training may reduce risk of dementia by 29-48% across 10 years. While these results are encouraging, dementia was not clinically diagnosed in the study participants. Active Mind hopes to provide stronger evidence that computerized brain training can be used for Alzheimer’s prevention. In the Active Mind study, re-

searchers will determine which types of computerized brain training have the best chance to reduce dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease. Study sites include the University of South Florida, University of Florida, Clemson University, and University of California San Francisco in collaboration with University of Minnesota and Posit Science Corporation. “We are excited for the opportunity to continue working towards prevention of dementia. We are looking for volunteers to join us and are grateful to those who have already joined our fight against Alzheimer’s disease by enrolling in the Active Mind study,” said Brianne Stanback, PhD, Project Manager III in the USF Morsani College of Medicine and the Cognitive Aging Lab Director of Community Engagement. Active Mind participants will

be asked to complete in-person study visits across two years and complete at least 40 hours of computerized exercises. Enrolled study participants will receive a free Pad®. Those interested in the Active Mind study may participate at the USF Tampa or St. Petersburg campuses. We are very grateful to the sixty-three individuals who have already joined the Active Mind study. We sincerely appreciate them and their efforts to help fight Alzheimer’s disease. What Do Gulfport’s Ward I Candidates Love About Gulfport?

TOMMIE BIXLER

Tommie Bixler loves Gulfport because, “of all the friendly, giving people who make up the community we all love.”

This week, The Gabber Newspaper asked Gulfport’s Ward I candidates to write a few words about what they love about Gulfport. Tommie Bixler: There is so much to like about our little city on the bay. I love that we are a full-service city. We know our police, our firefighters, and the wonderful staff that work at the library, the senior center, the recreation center, the marina, the casino, city hall, and all the vital departments that keep our city running smoothly. The essence of a small town is that ability to build relationships with the folks that are instrumental in making Gulfport the welcoming town that we love. I love the wide assortment of restaurants and shops. We are fortunate to have a vibrant, active, and diverse arts community and a wide variety of music to enjoy. Our city is pet friendly, pedestrian friendly and bicycle friendly. We have a park for everyone; beautiful playgrounds, walking trails, boardwalks, skate parks, Trolley Markey Square, and wide-open green spaces.

APRIL THANOS

By Patrick Heinzen

April Thanos loves Gulfport because, “of its character, charm, beautiful parks, and wonderful welcoming people.”

As a Navy veteran, I am drawn to the water features such as the pier, the marina, the beach, and Clam Bayou. All the special events in our city, from the weekly Tuesday Market to the annual GeckoFest and everything in between makes me proud to live here. It gives us a chance to bring people here from other places and highlight how accepting, friendly, and fun we are. These events would not be possible without the tremendous volunteer spirit of our neighbors and friends. It is the people and their kindheartedness that make me proud to live in Gulfport. April Thanos: So much I love about Gulfport has been so well reported by others that it might have come from the Gulfport Merchants Chamber, but I’ll add my voice to the chorus! It is an adorably cute community for my dog, Flora, and I to meet neighbors on our morning walk. I absolutely love the beach, the parks, the overhanging canopy of oaks, the brick streets, the local

businesses, eateries and wineries. And location...! Our peaceful community is a satellite of one of America’s hot small cities and is just minutes from the country’s best beaches. Those are wonderful things and I am part of the effort to preserve them. But it is the community that I love most. People more than things. You don’t have to be an artist or musician to love the flair and beauty they bring to our town. Some residents just carry art in their hearts. Together, they anchor a culture of social tolerance and diversity, personal freedom and its twin, responsibility. This culture of mutual respect is what I love most about Gulfport. A true community invites all of us to be our better selves and not let each other down. Perhaps that’s why young people are choosing to plant their flag and raise their kids here? ‘Giving back’ is a cliché but I literally feel the community has given me something I missed elsewhere. I am doing my best to show appreciation and support others doing the same.

of the blending of diversity, and the impact this district can have on the community. Along with this, he spoke more about how fitting the name will be once the district begins to develop more. “Fusion is a Jetson-esque term. It feels very futuristic,” said O’Hara. “In the foodie world you have these fusion restaurants that bring together different cultures. We are hoping to do the same here, as well as focus on the fusion of different kinds of art.” What is Next for the Fusion 49th Street District?

Ian O’Hara described the importance of the blending of diversity, and the impact this district can have on the community.

brought these names to community members, who voted to name the district: Fusion 49th Street Business District, or Fusion 49. Fusing the Cities This project has been in the making for a long time. Born from a partnership between O’Hara and St. Petersburg City Councilmember John Muhammad (District 7), the goal is

to use the mutual space to bring the two cities together. “I’m more than happy to go along with a unique name like this,” said O’Hara. “When you think about it, it’s really fitting. The definition of fusion is a process or result of joining things together to create a single unit. This is two different communities and cultures coming together to make one.” O’Hara described the importance

“The next step is to file for our 501(c)(3) and hire an executive director,” said O’Hara. He is adamant about the area having the distinction of a district, and not an association. This allows the community to come together and make decisions, with a single director to bring these ideas together. Along with this, O’Hara wanted to make sure to keep 49th Street South in the name to keep the focus on the surrounding community. From here, O’Hara and Muhammad want to take a step back and let the district build itself. They are working on a larger beautification project for 49th Street South that would focus on rehabbing streets and sidewalks, as well as adding more tree coverage to the area.

Idalia Aid

How To Apply for St. Petersburg Hurricane Idalia Funding The City of St. Petersburg is putting together a project to help homeowners affected by Hurricane Idalia. The State gave St. Petersburg $600,000 to help applicants through the City’s Housing Rehabilitation Assistance Program. The City is temporarily expanding eligibility to help with hurricane-related needs. The Housing Rehabilitation Assistance Program provides funding to residents who need to repair their homes to be up to code, safety, and accessibility requirements. Funding is available through Home Repair Loans, or the Accessibility Assistance program. Home Repair Loans work towards safety risks and code violations, while the Accessibility Assistance Program provides funding to physically, visually, or hearing impaired homeowners or renters who need to make their residence more accessible. St. Petersburg Hurricane Idalia Funding In a release from the City of St. Petersburg, Mayor Kenneth Welch shared his thoughts on the project. “I am grateful for the tireless work of our entire Pinellas Delegation on behalf of the St. Petersburg communities impacted by Hurricane Idalia,” said Welch. “The passage of HB 1C provides significant relief and additional funding to residents in our coastal communities still recovering from this serious storm. commences, I look forward to working with our representatives in Tallahassee to ensure that recovery and resiliency remain priorities over the coming weeks.” How To Use Funding The City provides a forgivable home repair loan, secured by a mortgage and promissory note up to $100,000. There is a zero percent interest rate with 5, 10, and 15 year loan terms. Disaster funding can be used for rehabilitation, construction, and repairs not covered by insurance or other disaster programs, interim repairs to avoid further damage like tree and debris removal, and the purchase of supplies to weather proof homes that are damaged. Additionally, this funding can go towards paying insurance deductibles, rental and mortgage as-

sistance, and utility assistance. Homeowners or renters affected by Hurricane Idalia are eligible to apply. The City has income limits for applicants at 30%, 50%, 80%, and 120% of the area median income. To apply, go to street.org/homerepair. Call the City of St. Petersburg’s Housing and Community Development Department at 727-893-7247 for more information. New Year on the Beach

St. Pete Beach Commission Updates By Patrick Heinzen

CITY OF ST. PETE BEACH

Floodplains in St. Pete Beach are getting looked at differently to save residents money on homeowners insurance.

While the resignation of four of the five St. Pete Beach commissioners hit the City hard, the interim commission is working hard to keep city the operating. On Jan. 9, the City held their first City Commission meeting of the new year. Here, Mayor Adrian Petrila led the interim commissioners for Districts 1, 2, and 4 through the proceedings

of a city commission meeting. Here are the St. Pete Beach commission updates. District 3 Vacancy St. Pete Beach is still feeling the effects of losing nearly all of their commission. While interim commissioners currently fill three of the

vacancies, District 3 remains vacant. On Mar. 19, the City will hold a general election for Districts 1 and 3. While District 1 has an opposed race, the candidate for District 3, Betty Rzewnicki, is unopposed. In the process of selecting an interim commissioner, Rzewnicki submitted a letter of interest. As she is already qualified for the seat, and

said District 4 interim commissioner Richard Lorenzen. “I think we’ve had enough turbulence recently.” While the interim commissioners were excited to appoint Rzewnicki to the interim spot, Mayor Petrila was uncertain. “We’re supposed to provide due

After this, Petrila continued to talk about how in the spirit of consistency, all the candidates should get interviewed. Despite this, District 1 interim commissioner Karen Marriott moved to appoint Rzewnicki as the District 3 interim commissioner. The other two interim commissioners agreed. Petrila voted no after originally trying to abstain from voting. Rzewnicki will serve as the interim District 3 commissioner until March. Following the election, her two-year term as the District 3 commissioner begins

Another issue that came up with the resignations was the City losing its Vice Mayor.

“I would like to suggest that commissioner Lorenzen be appointed Vice Mayor,” said Marriott. “In the meetings that we’ve had so far, I think he’s shown a pretty good grasp of the process and what is happening, and also he is the most senior of us... by a meeting.” Lorenzen was unanimously approved as the Vice Mayor. Luckily, Southwest Little League never officially disbanded. In their contract with Madeira Beach, they have a clause which allows them to quickly terminate the contract, as the goal was always to come back to St. Pete Beach. The City voted unanimously to approve this contract ending, and Southwest Little League is returning to St. Pete Beach.

While Districts 1 and 3 are up for election in March, Districts 2 and 4 are not up for election until March 2025. Because of the vacancies, the commissioners voted on Resolution 2023-26. St. Pete Beach is currently rated as a six; the goal is a five. What this means for residents is the price for homeowners insurance will go down. “I recommend we make audience and community input available,” said Mayor Petrila. “I don’t think there is any amount of public input that is too much when you’re dealing with something like this,” Marriott agreed. The City looks to schedule a town hall or workshop about this issue with the County’s property appraiser within the next month.

What Does Gulfport Do About Boats on the Beach? By Patrick Heinzen

PATRICK HEINZEN

This week, a reader asks about the City of Gulfport’s boat removal procedure for boats that washed ashore during storms.

Question: What’s the City of Gulfport’s procedure for boat removal for boats that drag anchor and wash ashore during a storm? How long do the owners have to remove them before the City takes action? What does it cost to move a boat if the owner doesn’t do it? —Multiple Gulfport Residents Answer: The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Jim O’Reilly to learn more about the process. Although boat removal is usually handled by the Gulfport Municipal Marina, The Gabber Newspaper learned that City Manager Jim O’Reilly works closely with Harbormaster Denis Frain. O’Reilly filled us in on what happens. “The first thing the City does is attempt to work with the owner and see if they have insurance. If they don’t, then the police step in and help the Marina staff try to get the owner to move the boat,” said O’Reilly. “After the police get involved and post a notice to remove

the boat, the City has the ability to seize it if the owner doesn’t move it. The cost comes from hiring a contractor to come and remove the boats, and it changes per situation.”

O’Reilly added that the Gulfport boat removal procedure’s time frame depends on the amount of boats or severity of the storm. According to Frain, the cost to remove a boat is $250 per foot.

2022. The hotel portion of the building closed for renovations in October 2022. On Jan. 15, the Peninsula Bed & Cocktails held a grand opening with raffles, free drinks, a food truck, and a DJ. Gulfportians lined up to get a peek — and a gratis cocktail — starting at 3 p.m. “Every room is themed after a cocktail, and you have in each room a mini bar with the cocktail you’re staying in in a can,” said one of the owners Maurice Kadosh. “If you’re staying in the Espresso Martini room and you don’t like that drink, and you want an Old Fashioned, we will make that for you.” The Peninsula Bed & Cocktails had its soft opening in fall 2023. The hotel has 16 rooms, all priced around $150-300 per night. “We want you to be able to have a more unique experience than what we had before,” Kadosh said. As guests walked in for the grand opening, two bartenders made

The Wine House When Matt and Paige Acree opened Gulfport Brewery in 2020, they didn’t realize they’d one day be in the wine-and-barbecue business, too. But four years later, they coown The Wine House in Gulfport. “Two years ago — 2022 — I was approached by the owner of the hotel,” Matt told The Gabber Newspaper. The owner of the Historic Peninsula Inn asked Matt to help put together the new restaurant at the Peninsula and former Backfin Blue. Initially, Matt says, both businesses on both properties were partners, but, he says, he found one of

the partners in the Peninsula project had “questionable accounting practices,” which he brought it to the owner’s attention. Although the owner severed his relationship with that partner, in November, the Acrees opted to amicably split the business from the Peninsula, although the owner — Florida House Realty Investments — owns both properties. “Everyone remains on good terms,” Matt said. “I wish them the best.” But the Acrees won’t run the business alone: Rob and Ali Salos, who live in Pasadena Yacht and Coun-

try Club, joined The Wine House as co-owners in late October 2023. The Salos’, who moved to Gulfport in 2010, met Matt and Paige when they joined Gulfport Brewery’s Mug Club, a Father’s Day gift for Rob. Rob runs a live event production company; Ali is a regional business manager for a medical device company. “We chatted for a few months,” Matt said. The Wine House, 2913 Beach Blvd. S., Gulfport. Puppy Parade Dogs and their owners walked 15 minutes from Crisp Park to Emma’s house with “Happy Birthday” signs and balloons. When asked about the turnout, Patty said, “it’s awesome; she really loves dogs.” Once arriving at her house, Emma sat in an outdoor chair in her front yard with a ginormous smile as each dog excitingly walked up to her lap. Patty’s dog Two Paws is a 3-yearold, black Labrador retriever who trains with the group, but he is also Emma’s best friend. For her birthday, Tyack gifted Emma a canvas image of her and Two Paws and a birthday cake of a white terrier. “Thank you everybody, this is very sweet,” Emma said smiling from ear to ear.

Could You Be Gulfport’s Next Poet Laureate? By Amanda Hagood

Key Duties

AMANDA HAGOOD

A plaque in the Gulfport Library commemorates Gulfport’s current and previous poet laureates. The Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library lead the search for Gulfport’s first poet laureate in 2016.

This year, City Councilmember Ian O’Hara, a founding member of Gulfport literary society Ink Tank, will oversee the process of appointing the new poet laureate. O’Hara also hopes to gain official recognition for the position through a city-wide decree. “Gulfport is already promoted as a city of the arts,” he reflects, “but this recognition will bring more attention to Gulfport’s many writers. It will put us on the map for one more thing.” The key duties of the poet laureate include giving presentations at Ink Tank events, offering programming at the Gulfport Public Library, and organizing the production of a Gulfport poetry anthology. Each new laureate, O’Hara adds, should to bring forth at least one new initiative. Current Laureate Rob McCabe, for instance, hosted “Say Gay,” a presentation of LGBTQ+ writing and music, at the Blueberry Patch. The poet laureate’s term is three years. “Just enough time to do something special,” O’Hara says. Beloved Poet Honored

St. Pete has one. St. Augustine has one. Orlando has one. But did you know that Gulfport, at a fraction of these cities’ size, has its own poet laureate? And, did you further know that applications for the position are now open? Inspiring a Love of Poetry A poet laureate serves as the official poet of a city, state, or country, tasked with instilling appreciation for the reading and writing of poetry. The position is named for the ancient Roman custom of crowing distinguished citizens with bay laurel leaves (though in our case, we’d probably have to

use laurel oak.) Gulfport’s first poet laureate, Dr. Peter Hargitai, was appointed in 2016. The idea was the inspiration of Margie Davis, board member of the Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library, who hoped it might promote literacy and provide a platform for Gulfport’s many poets. Hargatai lived up to the vision, reading poems at civic events and cultural gatherings (often wearing a festive hat), and editing Gateway: Gulfport Poets, an anthology showcasing local versifiers. Subsequent honorees include Mayor Sam Henderson (2017), Dr. Peter Hargitai (2018-2020), and Rob McCabe (2021-2023).

thegabber.com | January 18, 2024 - January 24, 2024

The position is open to any Gulfport resident, says O’Hara. Applicants should submit up to three poems, a short bio, and a letter of intent. Applications must be delivered in hard copy form (typed or handwritten) to 2001 53rd St. S. by Feb. 5. A committee of four judges will select the new honoree through a blind review. This year, in addition to a new poet laureate, Ink Tank will bestow the title of Honorary Poet Laureate posthumously on Stone Handy. The beloved poet, musician, and Gulfport fixture died in 2022. Keep a song in your pocket, Gulfport. And consider submitting a few come February.

food Florida’s Citrus

Fresh Fruit From Dooley Groves By Morgan Banno

Florida has a rich citrus history. Acres of groves and rows of citrus trees are an iconic symbol of Florida’s agricultural landscape. Citrus was first introduced in Florida in the 1500’s when Spanish explorers settled on the peninsula. Now, the Sunshine State is the country’s top producer of oranges and grapefruit (and a prominent supplier worldwide), with California trailing closely behind. Despite a history of ups and downs, with major events dubbed “The Great Freeze,” the citrus industry is thriving. And you can have the farm-to-table experience of picking your own produce right off the trees at Dooley Groves. Dooley Groves Adventure I often go on foodie field trips where I explore tastings, meet chefs, and talk to small business owners in the food industry. I have great admiration and appreciation for our farmers and growers. There’s nothing more inspiring than picking fresh, Florida citrus en plein air. As a kid, I picked apples on my grandfather’s farm in Michigan. And one of my favorite foraging memories is when I’d hunt for raspberries with my dad on our summer evening bike rides. Now that I’m in Florida, the citrus calls. Dooley Groves is a family citrus business in Ruskin that has been run by the Houghtaling family since 1967. With four generations of citrus growers in the family, they know what they’re doing. Dooley Groves is known for their honeybells — a type of tangelo. Honeybells, a hybrid cross between a Dancy tangerine and a Dunan grapefruit, are best grown (and first grown) in Florida. You can get them fresh from January through March. In the Dooley Groves There are more than 6,500 honeybell trees at Dooley Groves. Honeybells are seedless, easy to peal, and these little babies are super sweet with extra juice. In

Chef Morgan’s Skinny Honeybell Margarita This skinny honeybell margarita is low carb, vibrant, and fresh. You don’t need a sweetener, like agave, for this margarita. Rim your glass with sugar, salt, or even Tajin for an exotic kick. Serves 1 2 oz. silver tequila 4 oz. freshly squeezed honeybell orange juice 2 oz. lime juice 1 lime, for garnish Sparkling water Sugar or salt for rimming the glass Cut off a slice of lime and rim the glass so it’s coated in lime juice. Pour the sugar or salt on a plate, flip your margarita glass upside down and move around the plate to coat the rim. Mix tequila, fresh OJ, and lime juice in a shaker with ice. Pour into glass and top with sparkling water. Garnish with orange and/or lime wheels.

addition, the grove also sports another 2,000 trees featuring tango tangerines, sugar belles, rio red grapefruit, pineapple oranges, ortaniques, valencias, navel oranges, pink pomelos, and ponderosa lemons. Ponderosa Lemons These larger-than-life lemons that are a hybrid cross between a pomelo and a citron. Less sweet

than Meyer lemons, the ponderosa tree puts out softball-sized lemons and is so dubbed “America’s Wonder Lemon.” The branches of the trees are covered in thick masses of spines that make harvesting these bad boys somewhat of a challenge.
