Raw Emotion: The Art of Camilla Byrd By Abby Baker
CAMILLA BYRD
Pre-pandemic, Camilla Byrd was working full time at a St. Petersburg cafe. In March of 2020, she found $50 worth of forgotten oil paint in a wayward closet. The 29-year-old painter never looked back. “Oil is what I’m going to be using for the rest of my life,” Byrd said. “I’m just passionate about it.” Having taken a few art classes in high school, Byrd painted for fun and worked with acrylic paints over the years, but the habit never stuck until the quarantine blues teased it out of her. “It’s hard to consider myself an artist, even though I’ve always worked on artsy things and such,” Byrd said. “I guess this is the first time I’ve taken it seriously.” Less than a year later, Byrd is working as a professional artist, creating whimsical oil portraits and surreal living room sketches 30 hours a week. “In March I was having a bit of an existential crisis,” Byrd said. “I’m close to 30 now. I have nothing to lose, so I just went full-fledged at it.” Her first oil painting, titled “A Nightmare Within a Dream,” is draped in blue with nostalgic undertones. Nearly a year later, she’s still working

voices Love the Gabber, Love the Police Blotter Dear Editor: We really enjoy the Gabber. Great paper, great hometown news. Upon looking at last week’s edition (Jan. 14-Jan. 20), a letter to the “Voices” section from Doug and Lynn Porter was requesting that the police blotter be reinserted into the weekly Gabber. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Porter for this wonderful suggestion. My wife and I were wondering if the blotter can make its way back into the Gabber. Hopefully yes, but if not, we understand and will still pick up a copy as we thoroughly enjoy this weekly publication. Thank you for your consideration. – Paul Colli The Gabber encourages letters and commentary. Be brief and sign your real name. news Gulfport Council Talks Festival Season At the January 19 Gulfport City Council meeting, Mayor Sam Henderson was absent and Vice Mayor Michael Fridovich presided over the meeting, which lasted just over an hour. CJ Reynolds of the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council gave a virtual presentation about planning for climate change and natural disasters. Council discussed unleashed dogs, vetted events, and renewed an agreement with Duke Energy.
ABBY BAKER
By Ryan McGahan
Duke Energy Gulfport City Council renewed its agreement with Duke Energy. This agreement allows Duke to use the city’s right of way, for which Gulfport gets 6% of Duke’s revenue. Last fiscal year, that translated to $785,000 last fiscal year for the city. Council voted unanimously to renew the agreement. Festival Season Commences in Gulfport – with COVID Caveats Art, volleyball and cars: Gulfport City Council voted to allow three special events in the coming month. The So49 Car Show will take place on February 6; the Gulfport Fine Arts Festival will take place on February 13 and 14; and the VetSports volleyball tournament will also take place on February 13 and 14. Organizers will require masks at these events, which take place on public property; organizers will install hand-sanitizing stations, and event staff will enforce both. The city, Vice Mayor Michael Fridovich added, will be able to ask people to leave the property if they do not wear masks. “We do have the ability to cancel if necessary,” City Manager Jim O’Reilly told Council. However, the city cannot ticket people for not wearing masks because Governor Ron DeSantis will not allow it. As part of the event organizer agreements with the city – respectively, So49, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber of Commerce, and VetSports – organizers agree to police masks and require attendees to wear them. Councilwoman April Thanos cast the lone dissenting vote for
approving any of these three events. She voted no on the VetSports event, after raising concerns that it would take up too much space on the
beach. Former Ward One Councilman Dan Liedtke, who Thanos displaced in the 2020 elections, championed the event.
Overheard at the January 19 Gulfport City Council Meeting “I would like to ask the city to go beyond that and consider adopting the charter that Kenwood has.” – Artist Margo Dalgetty, asking council to designate Gulfport an artist enclave. City Manager Jim O’Reilly reminded council that the city has an overlay district that allows artists in that district to function as if they are part of an artist enclave. “I already talked to her and yes, she can do that.” – Councilmember April Thanos, in response to council candidate Mike Bauer’s request to CJ Reynolds for a map of expected sea levels around Gulfport in the next few decades. Although Bauer requested this map in real time at the meeting, Thanos had apparently anticipated and requested the map on Bauer’s behalf. Bauer is challenging incumbent Christine Brown in the March city council elections. “I am here to ask that the city consider adding an ordinance, or escalating this matter to the county, to have a muzzle or leash on dogs that have been found too dangerous.” – Claudine Fle, whose service dog was attacked by another dog that was off leash. O’Reilly and Vice Mayor Michael Fridovich responded that since animal control is run at the county level, their hands are tied, but are considering doing a PSA for the city on the issue. “I can barely hear you. Please use your microphone. That’s my only comment. I can barely hear anybody.” – Caron Schwartz, who had been watching the meeting online and called in to voice this one concern. “Between COVID, the insurrection we had at the Capitol, the upcoming election, we really need to take some time out, do something small, like dropping off food at the pantry, making a welfare check on a friend, anything like that that does make people feel a lot better.” – Councilmember Paul Ray, in his closing council comments.

Join Me to Help Get Rescued!
can you meet rescue dogs, cats, pigs and even skunks, all on one street? While it’s a blast to bring your fourlegged friends and meet new ones, the main purpose of Get Rescued is to raise funds and awareness for the many animal and pet rescue organizations in our area, including wildlife rehabbers. You can help in a bunch of different ways, from volunteering to donating pet food, and 100% of the event’s net proceeds get divided among the participating rescue and rehab groups each year.

to Get Rescued just for me. (Or so I’ve been told.) But what, you ask, is Get Rescued? It’s only the biggest and best animal rescue event of the year. Where else

Rent Booth Space: I don’t know much about business, but I DO know that a lot of people love Get Rescued! That makes it an opportunity to promote yourself, your brand and your products and services. All of the event’s net proceeds go to the rescue and rehab groups at Get Rescued – helping more of my pals find a great home, and helping wild animals who need help, too. Apply at sikpromotions.com/ applicants/winter/applicants-getrescued. Sponsor an Event: It just makes sense to me – the natural choice for petloving businesses is to sponsor petrelated events! Gulfport’s Get Rescued is the premier and longest-running animal rescue festival in Pinellas, and has gained an outstanding reputation for providing quality services in the community. That’s why I’m the mascot! Sponsors get event publicity, logo recognition, stage announcements and new customer relations. Sponsorships start at $500 and could be tax deductible (I’m a dog and don’t understand tax law, so double check with your CPA). We also love in-kind sponsorships. Host a Fundraiser: If your business loves pets as much as we do, you can host a fundraiser of your choice to help buy pet food donated to participating rescue groups on the day of the event. Yay food! Sponsor a Rescue Booth: Show your love! You can sponsor individual animal rescue groups for $75, and everyone will know how much you love animals. Rescue booth sponsors get a big ol’ sign at the group’s Beach Boulevard booth during the event. You can even sponsor a rescue in honor of your own beloved pet. Auction Donations: Got something

cool to donate? Local businesses can donate items for raffles and silent auctions, with the proceeds being divided among the participating rescues. If you have extra treats, however, please send them to me. (I’m kidding! Apparently my humans think I’m still carrying some holiday weight.) Pet Supplies Donations: Everyone at Get Rescued can bring donations of dog and cat food, cat litter and pet supplies for my friends! In 2019, approximately three tons of pet food was distributed to rescues. The drive-by drop-off location will be in front of the Gulfport Casino, at 5500 Shore Blvd. S. from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Got supplies for pick up? Call 727-3225217. Volunteers Help Us Help Them: Have fun, meet new people – and, most importantly, give ear scritches! One of the biggest reasons Get Rescued is successful – other than me, of course – is the help of the community. Volunteers contribute more than 100 hours of help each year. Come help out during flexible hours throughout the day. Donate: This year looks a little different, and we know that even with safety protocols in place, some folks and their animal friends may prefer to stay home. That’s OK! Personally, I’m always happy to snuggle on the couch. But, whether or not you come out to play with us, you can still support all the great rescues this year. Any amount will help our friends find their forever homes!

Gulfport Garage Plays Santa to Mom and Teen It may have been two weeks after Christmas, but Santa came in the form of Gulfport Garage owner Eric Cudar for a mother and son in need. On January 14, in response to a “Letter to Santa,” Cudar completed $1,200 worth of repairs for Maria Colon and Maverick Nothstein’s 1994 Ford Thunderbird that was running on its last leg. Every year, Veronica DaSilva and her wife, Jules Stenstrom, set up a Santa’s mailbox outside their Gulfport home for local kids to drop off letters to the big man himself. The duo normally dispatch Santa’s helpers to answer the letters, but when they received 17-year-old Nothstein’s letter asking for Santa’s help to make his mother’s car safe, DaSilva and Stenstrom decided to make a few calls. One of those calls was to Gulfport Garage. “We got this letter and it really moved me,” DaSilva said. “Here is a 17-year-old boy asking for nothing for himself, just his mother’s car to be repaired.” The repairs, regular maintenance fixes and tire repairs, totaled up to $1,200, and will keep the car reliable for longer, according to Cudar. “I guess people just know me as soft-hearted,” Cudar said. “In this case, I just thought it was really cool that a kid that age would think to do that.” Nothstein saw the big red mail box as he rode his bike in the area a week before Christmas. That’s when he decided to drop off his own request to the jolly old elf. In addition to cutting off the family’s reliable transportation, the Thunderbird’s mechanical issues also put a stop to the long drives Colon and Nothstein would take together. “We took car rides about once a month, just to have a nice long drive, or get some food,” Colon said. “When the car started acting up, I told him we couldn’t trust it anymore, except for me to get to work and back.” Colon, who works as a security guard at a Pinellas County hospital, adopted Nothstein three years ago. She had no children of her own, and was a friend of Nothstein’s family throughout his life. The two plan to resume cruising together in the coming weeks.
MARIA COLON
By Abby Baker
“I love the kid,” Colon said. “It caught me off guard. I’m tearing up now just thinking about it.”

New Alliance Looks to Help Historically Black Cemeteries Educator Shannon Peck-Bart is taking a new step in the ongoing struggle to preserve historically Black cemeteries. Thursday, January 14, she led the first meeting of the African American Cemetery Alliance of Tampa Bay. This new coalition, made up of local activists, anthropologists and historians, hopes to share knowledge and resources between all those working to preserve local history and protect the resting places of the deceased. “As you are well aware, the Tampa Bay area has recently experienced a profound awareness of marginalized histories reflected in the cultural landscapes of removed, relocated, destroyed, and marginalized African American cemeteries, Peck-Bartle wrote in her initial proposal for the Alliance. “Each cemetery bears witness to individual and communal stories of the lived experiences of the African American community in Tampa Bay. In June 2019, the Tampa Bay Times published an investigation into the disappearance of Zion Cemetery, an African-American graveyard in Tampa that was paved over to build the Robles Park public housing complex. The piece spawned a wave of interest and investigations in other neglected historically Black cemeteries. Last year, the Gabber also published an eightpart series, “A Grave Situation, about historically Black cemeteries in Pinellas County. At the meeting, Peck-Bartle discussed her hope of creating a

classroom resource to teach students about the history of racism, using local examples. The cemetery she is most involved with, Rose Hill Cemetery in Tarpon Springs, has a website with virtual tours and a page for lesson plans for teachers, which she added to the curriculum for her own classes. Lucile Malone, secretary for state representative Fentrice Driskell, also attended the meeting, and discussed the new legislation Driskell and state senator Janet Cruz hope to pass this session. The bill, HB 37-2021, would create a task force composed of 10 individuals to investigate, review and propose strategies for preserving unmarked and abandoned African American cemeteries across Florida. According to Malone, the bill intends

to set aside $400,000 for statewide research on the subject, and $50,000 each for the memorialization of Zion Cemetery as well as Ridgewood Cemetery, buried underneath King High School in Tampa. A similar bill died in the senate last year. Dr. Antoinette Jackson, a professor and chair of the USF Department of Anthropology, spoke about her plans to launch a “Black Cemetery Network website, providing an interactive map with the location, history and resources for each graveyard. The website would immediately focus on Tampa Bay area cemeteries, but Jackson hopes it will be used nationally, to also track cemeteries outside the state. Jackson hopes for a “soft rollout on the site in February.

A Land Worth More Than Remembering:
A two-part special on a unique tract of land in Pinellas By James A. Schnur
PINELLAS PIONEER ARCHIVE
Part 2: What We Have Lost, What We Can Save Last week, we learned about Gladys Douglas and the 43.44 acre tract along Keene Road where she lived. This week, we’ll hear about efforts to acquire and preserve one of the few remaining undeveloped lands in PInellas so future generations can enjoy Florida’s natural environment. No pristine lands remain in Pinellas County. Aside from governmentmanaged preserves and a handful of private conservation easements, there are few flatwoods and wetlands left to offer a refuge for native flora and fauna from the cars and crowds surrounding them. The largest, Brooker Creek Preserve along Keystone Road east of Lake Tarpon, occupies 8,700 acres and protects a vast watershed.
Although Brooker Creek Preserve offers significant protection for many species, it covers a mere fraction of the lands Boot Ranch occupied when established by Al Boyd in 1952. Boyd created a place for livestock to roam after the state enacted fence laws to close the open range. Twenty years later, in 1972, he sold most of the property to developers on a handshake. Earthmovers and construction workers replaced cattle, horses and grasslands. Now the large ornamental boot that once stood out on the frontier sits in a parking lot of the Shoppes at Boot Ranch near where Tampa Road meets East Lake Road. Proposed developments sometimes spark ire. For example, plans to redevelop two golf courses in the Seminole area have mobilized residents who prefer to live close to

tees, fairways and sandpits, rather than new neighbors. A homebuilding company recently abandoned plans to redevelop the Bardmoor Golf Course. The fate of the former Tides Golf Course remains uncertain as preservationists hope to persuade public officials to acquire this acreage east of Boca Ciega Millennium Park. In Tarpon Springs, residents, developers and members of the Friends of Anclote River have taken sides on a proposal to build 400 apartment units on 74 acres along the river and east of U.S. Highway 19. Walmart originally acquired the property more than 15 years ago to build a big box store on the site, but later abandoned those plans. City leaders in Tarpon Springs are presently discussing this parcel’s fate. A Land Worth Saving Fortunately, plans to bulldoze, pave over and build upon the Douglas property recently fell through. A window of opportunity now exists for Pinellas County and the public to preserve this endangered acreage, one comparable in size to Boca Ciega High School’s campus, including the former Little League lands along its northern boundary with Lincoln Cemetery.
theGabber.com | January 28, 2021 - February 3, 2021
While the fate of the aforementioned former golf courses and the Tarpon Springs tract remain unclear, officials continue their negotiations on the Douglas property. They hope to tender an offer to prevent the door from reopening for developers. We have an opportunity to save the Douglas tract, one of the largest undeveloped scrub habitats in northern Pinellas still in private hands. When combined with the neighboring lands under conservation, this greenspace will create an important buffer of nearly 100 acres. The slight ridge on the Douglas property reaches more than 60 feet above sea level in some places, creating a unique ecosystem perfect for passive recreation rather than another high-use county park with playgrounds, picnic shelters and expanses of mowed grass. This rare and threatened habitat cannot be reconstituted if destroyed. Its abundant native plant life takes in the carbons we and our machines generate. The sandy soils drain water back into the ground, recharging Jerry Lake and surrounding lands in ways that our built environment
of asphalt and concrete cannot. Endemic Florida species flourish. Maples, sand pines, red cedars and scrub oak trees soar above the coastal hammock and willow swamp below. Lichens and deer moss abound. Hog plum bushes bear sweet fruits. Rare native plants such as Curtiss’s milkweed and rosemary scrub grow here in ways they never would in a manicured garden. Abundant rookeries on this property sustain a variety of birds. Gopher tortoises burrow into the grounds below, creating microhabitats that have the ability to sustain more than 300 commensal species, including many native reptiles and amphibians. A bobcat recently prowled on the land. City leaders of nearby Dunedin have taken an important step in the broader community effort to save this land. On October 20, 2020, city commissioners unanimously agreed to divert $2 million in Penny for Pinellas funds originally allocated for a parking garage to help purchase this property and ensure its preservation. Dunedin’s leaders sent a strong message that they were willing to sacrifice pavement
to save a natural sanctuary. More assistance is needed, though. What can you do to help save the Douglas tract? Let county commissioners know you support plans to acquire this land as a preserve. Reach out to your state representative or senator to see if funds from the Florida Communities Trust or other sources may be available. Let them know that preserving this land enhances our quality of life. (Editor’s Note: The Pinellas Community Foundation has taken a leadership role in preserving the Douglas property. For more information about this organization’s initiative, visit pinellascf.org/save-thegladys-douglas-preserve) A graduate of Boca Ciega High School, James A. Schnur served as president of the Pinellas County Historical Society and as a member of the Pinellas County Historical Commission. He has authored four photographic history books on the cities of Largo, Madeira Beach, St. Petersburg and Seminole, as well as a history of Pinellas County.

Pedestrian Struck, Injured on Gulfport Boulevard By Abby Baker
CATHY SALUSTRI
Tuesday, January 19 at 7:42 p.m. Paul Crabtree, 39, was struck by a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Tabitha McMahon, 30, according to Gulfport authorities. Crabtree was walking south across Gulfport Boulevard at Beach Boulevard when a Gulfport Police officer traveling westbound slowed to alert Crabtree to get out of the road, or use a crosswalk, said Detective Sergeant Thomas Woodman.
Moments later, McMahon struck Crabtree. “The officer observed he was not in the crosswalk, nor were the crosswalk lights on, and advised him to move out of the road,” Woodman said. “He continued right into the path of incoming traffic.” First responders took Crabtree to Bayfront Health Hospital in St. Petersburg for non-life-threatening injuries where he was reportedly in stable condition at press time.

Gulfport Little League Ready for a Season of Safe Fun By Gabber Staff
LAURA MULROONEY
Ash Moreland gives it his all as he runs the bases during Gulfport Little League’s Opening Day at Tomlinson Park in February 2020. “To me as long as you’re out on the field, every day feels like opening day,” Vice President Maleke Fowler said.
The pandemic shuttered or canceled a lot of the things that bring us joy, but with tested safety protocols in place, youth sports are making a comeback. Gulfport Little League is starting up the 2021 season, and registration for players ages 4-14 is underway. There are also opportunities for new volunteers and sponsors to support the program, and youth, parents and all in the community are invited to participate. There are lots of ways to help, both on and off the field. The league is chartered by Little League International to serve boys and girls who live in Gulfport and St. Petersburg south of Central Avenue, with home fields in the ballfields of Gulfport. The league organizes teams by skill level and age, competing against teams from around Pinellas County starting in February. “Competing is fun, of course, but our vision is to develop individuals as citizens and community leaders,” Gulfport Little League President Trevor Mallory says. “Under the leadership of responsible coaches, youth learn about teamwork, commitment and sportsmanship that are such an important part of their futures well-beyond sports.” This season brings extra challenges, of course. According to organizers, Little League International issued special rules and guidelines to address the pandemic based on thorough

evaluation of safety for all participants in practices, games and operations. “The new guidelines address the concerns of this year, and we will be following them faithfully,” Gulfport Little League Vice President Maleke Fowler say. “As parents ourselves, we appreciate the importance of safety.” After a successful inaugural year of baseball and softball in 2019, the City of Gulfport granted the league a three-year lease in 2020 to use the city ballfields and get sponsor support, like the Gulfport Merchants Chamber, last year’s All-Star MVP (Most Valuable Patron). After COVID-19 put a stop to the 2020 season, the league is ready to start again, with a focus on safety and transparency. Gulfport Little League has modest registration fees, compared to other area youth sports, and requires no tryouts. “We are dedicated to serving all youth that want to play,” says Fowler. Organizers note, however, that the league’s success does require community support – through sponsors, coaches, new board members and adult volunteers. Find more at fb.com/gulfportlittleleague18. Home Rule: An Introduction By Jennifer Webb
JENNIFER WEBB
When I was being recruited to USF for graduate school, I rented a car and drove to Gulfport with my spouse, Cynthia, at the encouragement of friends. “All the girls come here during off season,” they said. So, we girls decided to check it out. We fell in love. We fell in love with the tiny downtown, with the lights, with the water, with the warm hellos, with the adorable bungalows….after a brief six-month stint living next to USF in Tampa, we knew we needed to get to Gulfport. So, we grabbed a Gabber. Within 30 minutes we had found an apartment right in the middle of town and had put down a deposit. We were home. For many years now, this little village has been our refuge. We’ve made dear friends, started businesses, finished graduate school, run for office. Like us, our neighbors love their little slice of paradise. Yet, the policies, budgets and statutes being implemented in Tallahassee, Clearwater and D.C. all potentially impact our safe havens
here in southwest Pinellas County. The aim of this column is to look at what is going on outside of our community and how it may impact us within our communities. In some cases, it is absolutely evident. For example, the governor’s executive orders to open up the vaccine to the four million residents who are 65 years and older, an insufficient supply of the vaccine being issued from D.C. via Tallahassee, and the inadequate system the county set up to handle the demand for the vaccine caused system-wide failures. The collective outpouring of anger is because most people anticipated this breakdown, which mirrored the breakdown of the unemployment system just months ago. In other instances, the impact of D.C. and Tallahassee on our cities and neighborhoods are less apparent. For example, I recently warned local mayors that the rule changes enacted in the state house could be detrimental to home rule. Why? Well, the truth is in any legislative session there are A-round

priorities and various B-round priorities of leadership in the state house and senate. Since session is only 60 days, leadership in either chamber only has the time (and political capital) to push through their A-round priorities. These tend to be a mixture of hyper-partisan legislation, plus some personal projects. Although both the house and Senate have seen many bills attacking home rule in past sessions, most of these bills never made it through both chambers to become law. Time just ran out. This session, however, Florida State House Speaker Chris Sprowls has made some significant changes to the rules, which could very well result in moving more bills through the house floor – including B-round priorities like attacks on local governance. What rules did he change? He introduced time limits for debate and questions. He also made changes to make it more difficult to insert amendments onto bills coming to the house floor. Members of the legislature use detailed Q&A, extensive lists of amendments and rigorous debate to highlight the problems in a piece of legislation – and to make their case before their colleagues and before Florida for why any particular bill should be voted down. Yet, fully deliberating legislation from the floor also serves to slow down the process. The result is that A-round priorities may move, but the clock runs out before B-round priorities can make it through. While we have watched committees attack home rule for years, until this year, they rarely had the time to make it over the finish line. We don’t yet know what our state legislative session will hold. But the next few months will be a flurry of activity from Tallahassee to D.C. – as the state legislature gets ready for session, the 117th Congress convenes, and the Biden Administration begins its first 100 days. In the coming months, I will follow these efforts and highlight some of the initiatives and legislation – on regional, state and occasionally national levels – that may impact our county and our community, particularly as it relates to home rule. Home rule protects our cities’ individual character. And, when our small cities and the communities within give us so much, isn’t it our duty to protect them? I think so.

food It’s Strawberry Season! We may be short on good news, but there’s one thing we can cheer: January marks the beginning of strawberry season. Florida is the country’s second largest strawberry supplier, exporting thousands of pounds of strawberries each year to various states across the country. According to the Florida Strawberry Grower’s Association, Hillsborough County alone supplies 15% of the nation’s winter strawberries, producing an impressive 20 million flats of fresh berries each season.

These juicy little berry bombs are not only refreshing but they are packed with potassium, antioxidants and vitamin C. Who doesn’t enjoy a sweet, chocolate-dipped strawberry confection or glistening, fresh strawberry slices atop French toast? And we all swear our own mother’s strawberry shortcake recipe is the world’s best. But an unconventional year calls for unconventional strawberry recipes. When cooking with strawberries, most people think of either sweet breakfast nosh or dessert-inspired recipes. But strawberries are a versatile ingredient you can add to many savory dishes for a tangy pop of acidity – like my Strawberry Chipotle BBQ Sauce (recipe follows). Chef Tip: Frozen strawberries make a splash. Wash and trim fresh your strawberries, and pat dry. Store in a large zip top bag and freeze whole (slicing larger strawberries in half). The next time you pop open a bottle of bubbly at brunch, throw a couple of frozen strawberries into the flute. Not only will they keep your champagne cold but you have a palate cleanser at the bottom of your glass!

Strawberry Chipotle BBQ Sauce (Yields 1-2 cups sauce) 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large sweet onion (minced) 3 cloves garlic (minced) 2 pints fresh strawberries (rinsed, ends trimmed, chopped) 2 chipotle chiles in adobo sauce 1 c. ketchup ⅔ c. light brown sugar (packed) 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp dried mustard Salt and pepper as desired Method: Sweat onion in olive oil until translucent; Add garlic. Stir in remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer to reduce, approximately 20 minutes or until consistency is thick and viscous. Using a blender or hand mixer, purée sauce until smooth. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. Recommended with grilled chicken and veggies. Beware of your grill’s temperature when cooking with this sauce as the sugars can easily burn. Coat your grilled item when it’s within five minutes of being done, moving your meat to a cooler spot on the grill. The sugars will caramelize and brown when ready.

Mottoli, David “Dave,” of Gulfport, passed away 1/12/2021. Born and raised in Lawrence, MA where he lived until 1951 when he moved with his bride to Hicksville, on Long Island, NY, where he lived with his beautiful wife Lucy for 62 years, until her passing in 2013. He raised his two daughters, Pat Mottoli-Monnia and Nancy Mottoli-Wedlock and actively participated in his children’s, grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s lives. He retired from Grumman Aerospace in 1986, working on NASA and military aircraft. At 99, Dave was very independent, living in his condo in Town Shores. For the past five years, he found a life he absolutely loved with so many new friends he treasured. He loved music all his life and here he found The Gazebo/ Pavilion at the Gulfport beach, where you could find him almost daily tapping his fingers and toes to the music – and yes find him dancing a few times. He was a very proud WWII veteran, serving in the Army Air Corp 25th Fighting Squadron. He loved this country and was so proud to serve it. Gulfport welcomed him and he was asked to be in its many parades, which he loved doing. He became well known in Gulfport as he drove around in his scooter adorned with American flags; many people would stop him and thank him for his service or just to chat. There will be a “Celebration of life” in August on his 100th birthday. He will surely be missed, but always remembered with a smile.

“I have a few friends I want to shoot and paint,” Byrd said, speaking artistically, of course. “I know them, and I know their personal stories.” Most recently, Byrd showed her work at Gulfport’s First Friday Art Walk and the young artist plans to continue showing pieces at the monthly event, as well as at the 2020 SPC annual Juried art exhibition at the St. Petersburg College Clearwater Campus. camillabyrd.com or @mr.camillabyrd on Instagram “Suspended in thoughts.”
“I’ve been influenced by painting in the early 1900s where a lot of portraits show people for what they really are,” Byrd said. “You take a picture today and it’s all like, ‘Smile and pose.’ I like a more undoctored, candid self.”
Byrd is inspired by the intense, slightly exaggerated portraits of Frida Kahlo and Lucian Freud, and her oil-oncanvas portraits reflect that. Currently, the artist is working on making her pieces more affordable, on a much smaller scale. Five-by-seven-inch paper paintings of fancy living rooms and extravagant wealth fill her working space at the moment. “I’m obsessed with painting interiors,” Byrd said. “Another thing people seem to like is vacation-themed cards – I don’t know, it’s funny what people like.” The cards range from $15 to $40, an inexpensive addition to an original art collection. “I just want to stress how attainable I think art should be,” Byrd said. “Not everyone can afford huge, expensive oil paintings.”

What We’re Reading By Lynn Taylor
BRIT CHISM
DENISE KEEGAN O’HARA
“What We’re Reading is a column about readers in the community and the books they love, in their own words.
Brit Chism Book: “Dear Life by Alice Munro “Dear Life is a collection of short stories by the author some call “the Canadian Anton Chekov. She has gathered 14 of her many works into this book. The short stories were published in various literary journals: Narrative, The New Yorker, the Atlantic, the Paris Review and others. Many of the stories, especially the last four, read like autobiography, but Munro says they are fiction, based on her life growing up in southern Ontario. What unifies these stories are themes of sex, love and death. If you can imagine her life’s work as a row of books, a metonym for the author, bookended by this one which she has said will be her last.
Denise Keegan O’Hara Book: “Giants: The Dwarfs of Auschwitz by Yehuda Koren and Eilat Negev I started reading this book a couple of years ago. It was very unsettling and disturbing; I needed to take a break. After recently learning of my Jewish heritage, I decided to pick it back up. As hard as it is to read, I think it’s very important that these stories are known.
