There is an error in your article on the best pizza in Gulfport. While I am happy that you included us with a beautiful picture of our pizza, there is an error in the sizes of the pizzas. Siri’s Gourmet Burgers and Pizza makes three sizes of pizza. Our medium is 14 inches. Our large is 18 inches and our extra-large is 20 inches. We do not make a 12-inch pizza. Tommy’s makes a 12-inch pizza as you can see by the size of the plate in the picture. If you compare the prices of pizzas and the size, we are by far the best value in town. I hope you can correct this error. As for our website, we are transitioning to a new POS system and there were several bugs still effecting the online ordering and the website. This is being dealt with as quickly as possible. Feel free to call me if you have any questions; thank you for your consideration. —Byron Chalfont, Owner of Siri’s Gourmet Burgers & Pizza The writer’s response: Byron, when we dined at Siri’s, your wife waited on us. She was absolutely lovely and when asked about the size of the medium pizza, she informed us it was 12 inches and would be, “plenty for two people to share.” The dimensions of your pizzas are not listed anywhere on your menu; the information published was verbatim from your staff. Editor’s Note: The size of Tommy’s pizza warranted not only this letter, but also seemed to warrant quite the debate on social media. We went to Tommy’s unannounced and asked to measure a pie. The pie measured 14 inches. While Tommy’s used to make a smaller pie, they changed the size several months ago.

How I love The Gabber Newspaper!! I am a Pass-a-Grille resident and am wishing and hoping that maybe The Gabber Newspaper would do St. Pete Beach the honor of giving us the help we desperately need to get through

REMEMBER: Ethics is what you do when no one else is watching.

this horrible time with the current and ongoing issues with the St. Pete Beach City Council. When I look back at the covers of The Gabber Newspaper of this past year, I recognize how truly informative your paper is. The article on City Councilmember April Thanos was well done. If St. Pete Beach had that kind of investigative reporting, I would not have sat eight hours in the City Council chamber Dec. 5, 2023 to have my three minutes to speak against the new $1.4 billion Sirata project. The fact that all four City Councilmembers resigned when they learned they would be held accountable speaks volumes. The problem is St. Pete Beach residents have absolutely no voice in our community. I know it is a stretch for The Gabber Newspaper but what happens to Pass-a-Grille will happen to Gulfport as well. This is a plea to The Gabber Newspaper to consider doing some investigative reporting regarding the St. Pete Beach City Commission. Yes, the four previous City Commissioners have resigned. But at this point, the City Attorney is trying to circumvent legal procedure for replacing them. SPB residents need some forum to hold him accountable. Thanks for your time. And, please, please keep up the great work on The Gabber Newspaper. —Linda Lewallen, St. Pete Beach The Gabber Newspaper encourages letters (one per person, per month). news Green Clean Machine

Jungle Lake’s Floating Wetland By Amanda Hagood

ED CARLSON

Once unrolled, assembled, and planted, the volunteers towed the floating island to and anchored it in a deeper basin of the lake.

Visitors to Walter Fuller Park in Jungle Terrace will notice something new in Jungle Lake: an island! But this is no enchanted isle rising from the depths; it’s a floating wetland: a lean, green, lake-cleaning machine. Troubled Waters Jungle Lake looks like an urban oasis, frequented by wading and diving birds. But it plays an important role in local hydrology, explains Dr. Ed Carlson, President of the Jungle Terrace Civic Association (JTCA). It drains a 470-acre swath of St. Petersburg, catching contaminants that run off streets, parking lots, and lawns. Its waters then flow to Boca Ciega Bay, a half a mile away. In 2015 and 2018, Carlson adds, the lake was contaminated with wastewater spills from the nearby Northwest Water Reclamation Plant. There were clear signs that something was fishy — and not in a good way — with the lake. Seven times throughout the past few years, it

had become overgrown with water lettuce, indicating a high nutrient concentration in the water. Worse still, this floating fluorescence could also cause oxygen levels in the lake to drop, endangering other plants and animals that called Jungle Lake home. The City’s attempts to remove water lettuce mechanically were only temporarily effective, and stripped other needed plants from the lake’s edges. Controlling the lettuce with pesticides lead to fish kills. There had to be a better way. Introducing “Riverponics” That’s where Stewards of Our Urban Lakes (SoUL) came in. The St. Pete-based nonprofit, founded in 2021, focuses on preserving and rejuvenating urban waterways. SoUL President Jim Bays, an experienced environmental scientist, thought he had a remedy for Jungle Lake: floating wetland islands. Environmental scientists have

known for decades that natural wetlands can improve water quality. Plants remove excess nitrogen, phosphate, and suspended solids (sand, sediment, plankton and other materials that impact water clarity) from runoff. Floating wetlands mimic natural wetlands by providing a surface — usually, a durable, recycled plastic mat — for hundreds of plants whose roots grow directly into the water. These “riverponic” plants absorb harmful nutrients and provide additional wildlife habitat. They can also be installed in spots too deep for typical wetland plants to grow. A 2020 study suggested that one acre of floating wetland can absorb the nutrient pollution generated by as much as 15 acres of urban development Installing an Island With the additional support of Keep Pinellas Beautiful and Florida Representative Linda Chaney, JTCA launched a three-year plan to re-

installation this fall. The 25-by-25foot “island” arrived in pieces, at a cost of slightly more than $8,000. SoUL volunteers unrolled and assembled sections, nestled in 540 plants, and towed the island into the open water in the center of the lake. It was, as Carlson quipped in a recent JCTA newsletter, the perfect Christmas present for Jungle Lake.

JTCA hopes that the floating wetland islands will help create more habitat for local birds such as this white ibis... And more joy for local birdwatchers at Jungle Lake.

store the lake. Throughout summer 2023, volunteers “waded in” to log more than 300 hours of maintenance. They “hand-weeded” water lettuce and replanted key sections of lake’s edge with 600 native Florida plants. They also launched a

“demonstration” floating wetland: a dining table sized collection of plants anchored along the lake’s southernmost channel. By September, it was flourishing. Building on this initial success, JCTA began raising funds for a larger

An Inspiring View Beemats — the New Smyrna Beach company that created the floating wetlands — will trim back growth and roots three times a year. This not only prolongs the life of the island, but allows the company to gauge the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients it absorbs. In the following phases of the plan, JCTA hopes to see several more floating wetlands installed. They’ll plan to seek grant funding to do so, says Carlson. For now, at the heart of one of the largest and most popular parks in St. Petersburg, Jungle Lake sets an intriguing example of how cities can balance urban growth and natural resource management. But that’s not the only reason it’s inspiring. “I love nature,” says JCTA volunteer Leilani Looker, gazing out over the water. “I love the beauty of this lake.”

Job Opening: Ward I

What is the Gulfport Candidate Job Description?

Tom Bixler The City of Gulfport is currently seeking a qualified resident to fill its Ward 1 seat on Gulfport City Council. The ideal candidate will be an individual who is able to take initiative while being part of a team, all while representing the voices of their ward, along with the many diverse voices that constitute our unique city. Ideally, insofar as this is a non-partisan position, this candidate will be able to put their own political opinions and agendas aside, and will, with the rest of council and the mayor, focus on the efficient and effective implementation of the initiatives that the city is working on to improve Gulfport’s quality of life, like on infrastructure improvement, a new senior center, and on 49th Street beautification. Furthermore, in that Gulfport prides itself on being a diverse community — the ideal candidate will make all citizens and businesses feel that Gulfport is

APRIL THANOS

With the Mar. 19 Gulfport City Council elections rapidly approaching, The Gabber Newspaper asked the Ward I candidates to submit a job description for a councilmember. Here is what they said:

a place that respects and celebrates differences, that welcomes anyone, from any background or political persuasion, who wants to contribute to the process of making our amazing city even more amazing. Lastly, the ideal candidate will act with honesty and integrity, will never use city resources or employees for their own personal reasons or gain, and will always remember that it is his or her job to serve the city — and not the other way around. The City of Gulfport honors our veterans, teachers, and civic leaders. April Thanos My approach to being a Councilmember is quite simple: what would I want or expect my representative to do for me? First, who do I represent? I live in Ward 1 and of course I am the voice for my ward, but everyone votes so we are all truly citywide representatives. When I take a call, I don’t start with ‘where do you live?’ but more like, ‘what can I do for you?’ Proposals generated by the City Manager and staff are very important. They put a great deal of work into these and it’s my job to read, to understand and to ask questions when necessary. Back to ‘what would I want my rep to do?’, I support the great majority of what comes to council and the City runs well, but no voter every told me to be a rubber stamp. Editor’s Note: The Gabber Newspaper has cut the remainder of April Thanos’ response as it specifically promoted her campaign. We offered Thanos the chance to resubmit a full job description, but she declined.

Stormrunners Dog Mural Vandalized, but Muralists Repaint It By Patrick Heinzen

CATHY SALUSTRI

On the night of Jan. 23, someone vandalized the dog mural at Stormrunners Tavern in Gulfport.

Stormrunners Tavern is ready to take Caddy’s seat at the Gulfport restaurant and bar table. Muralists had created an intricate dog mural on the east fence. On the night of Jan. 23, someone painted over the entire mural. Once a series of colorful dog portraits, Dave Burton, Stormrunners’ managing partner, arrived at the restaurant on the Jan. 24 and saw nothing but grey. “We found out first by social media,” said Burton. “When we got there, it was disappointing and upsetting.” Despite this, he isn’t too rattled. “Unfortunately, things happen,” said Burton. “We need to figure out how to move forwards and make the best place to make Gulfport locals excited. It’s not going to break our spirit.” Thoughts From the Artist The artist behind the mural company, Alex Clawson of RSK Murals, shares a similar perspective. “You don’t want to give whoever it is more hype,” said Clawson. “This is what they want. It would help if the hype dies down.”

The outrage, he says, is likely encouraging whoever it is to go out and do it again — here or to another mural. For nearly the whole day on Jan. 25, Clawson spent his time redoing the mural — on his own dollar. “I can’t put it on [Burton] to pay for us to redo it,” said Clawson. This time, he’s covering it with anti-graffiti barrier paint, so that if it happens again it is easier to clean off. Fortunately, Burton sees one positive from the incident. “The community has been so helpful and supportive,” said Burton. “It really shows how tightly knit Gulfport is. At the end of the day, we need to weigh wants versus needs. We’re still going to open in the spring. We’re full-steam ahead.” This is an ongoing story; read thegabber.com for updates.

food Barbecue Bliss

A Taste of The Wine House in Gulfport By Morgan Banno

MORGAN BANNO

The 2x2 platter comes with your choice of two meats and two sides at The Wine House in Gulfport.

If you’ve ever walked along the north end of Beach Boulevard and were seduced by that deliciously smoky barbecue smell, you can thank The Wine House. More specifically, you can thank BBQ master Al Nelson for stimulating your senses with his smoked masterpieces. The bright pink building, formerly home to legendary Backfin Blue, is now The Wine House, and they serve a long list of libations as well some of the best barbecue in Tampa Bay. Smoky Goodness Al starts smoking meats early in the morning, low and slow. He’s well-versed in all styles of American barbecue but what he serves at The Wine House is totally dependent on his mood (and what wood he has lit.) Sometime’s he’s feeling Texas, other times, he knocks out a little Memphis, but one thing’s for sure: It’s some of the finest smoked meat you’ll taste in Florida. “Everything is gonna have a story,” Al says, in regards to his rubs and styles. “And that smoke is called the ‘open’ or ‘closed’ sign.” When I ate at The Wine House in

Gulfport, Al used a combo of apple and cherry wood for rich flavor. With 15 different rubs in his arsenal, the flavors constantly change, but customers travel from Sarasota, Tampa, and as far as Pensacola for his grub. Try the Sauces The barbecue at The Wine House is pretty much a one-man operation. Al does all of the cooking, while his nephew serves as prep cook. We went on a late Sunday afternoon and had great seats at the indoor bar. Al came over and took our order, offering suggestions to pair with his homemade

sauces. We settled on a 2x2 Platter ($21.99) with brisket and pulled pork, with truffle mac and cheese, and house potato salad. The slabs of brisket were so tender, they fell off the fork. The pulled pork was luscious and juicy, and the homemade sauces were full of bold flavors. As if the platter wasn’t enough food, Al also hooked us up with his maple-hot honey burnt ends, 1/4 rack of St. Louis ribs, smoked sausage, and smoked wings. We also tried his brown sugar baked beans and ‘Bama coleslaw, but the truffle mac was my fave. If you like barbecue sauce, you must try one of Al’s scratch-made sauces: flamingo, sweet, heat, NC vinegar, Carolina mustard, and Alabama White. We loved the sweet and the heat, but the Carolina mustard is Al’s grandmother’s recipe and actually tastes better than anything you can find in the Carolinas. Go Here Now The Wine House also offers charcuterie and desserts, but we didn’t have room. Instead, we drank a great bottle of cabernet recommended to pair with our barbecue and basked in the smoky delight. Follow your nose to The Wine House and snag some of Al’s best BBQ before he sells out! The Wine House, 2913 Beach Blvd. S., Gulfport. Tues.-Thurs., 2-9 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 2-11 p.m., Sun., 2-9 p.m. 727256-0228, pinkwinehouse.com.
