A Gulfport Celebration

June is not the only time for Pride – it’s a year-round celebration. Gulfport’s Peace, Love, and Pride Festival returns to the Gulfport Casino Ballroom for its fifth annual celebration on March 12 from noon to sunset.

The Peace, Love, and Pride Festival began in March of 2018 by co-founders Amy Oatley and Lynn DiVenuti. They hope everyone comes together to celebrate love and the Gulfport community.

“It is basically a festival not just for the LGBTQ community, but for everybody,” DiVenuti said. “People here are just so friendly and diverse. Nobody thinks twice about seeing people running around holding hands.”

The festival hosts many of Gulfport’s home-grown bands and LGBTQ-friendly vendors and sponsors.

The Gulfport Gecko Amalgamated Marching Band starts the festival with a march from the Gulfport Recreation Center to the Casino. Performances occur on the outdoor stage facing the beach to make room for any dancing and/or lawn-chair lounging.

Performers include Anarkitty, Doug

and Dayna; Elysian Sex Drive; The Lynn Music Experience; Keith Bonvie and Greg Foley; Marianne and The Professor; Roxanne; and The Rum Syndicate.

Each year, the festival chooses a beneficiary for a portion of the proceed; this year they chose Girls Rock St Pete. The organization empow-

ers “women, girls, and gender-expansive folx [per Merriam Webster: this explicitly signals ‘the inclusion of groups commonly marginalized’]” to fearlessly express themselves, artistically experiment, and build confidence through playing instruments.

She Speaks for the Trees

“Trees give peace to the souls of men.” –Nora

“To be without trees, in the most literal way, is to be without our roots.”

“Learn character from trees, values from roots and change from leaves.”

This letter addresses the destruction and demise of Gulfport’s oldest residents, the live oaks. A landmark oak tree on 52nd Street South will soon be gone as the lot goes on the market. This tree is ageless, bending and twisting to the sky for over 150 years. It has witnessed the development and growth of Gulfport. The tree is a reminder of early Gulfport and its contribution to the beauty of the neighborhood, the environment, and enjoyment for the community.

At one time, this tree was a stop on the Gulfport City Tour and described as the oldest tree in town. It is believed that the tree dates back prior to the incorporation of Gulfport in 1910, and in fact, may date back to the time of the first settlers in Gulfport in 1878. It is sad that it appears there is no way to preserve this iconic symbol of beautiful Gulfport.

This very special tree was a focal point for children of my generation during the 1950s, ‘60s, and beyond. The tree lent itself to children of all ages who wanted to climb, play tag, and just lie in the grass to gaze up through the wondrous branches. This distinctive tree has provided gen-

erations of Gulfportians a place for meditation, serenity, picnics, shade, and beauty. Like historical buildings, Gulfport’s historical trees should be preserved. These are trees of unique presence that deserve protection for their contributions to the community, helping to maintain the environment, and for providing a picture of growth and stability for generations. I have watched as tree after tree has been sacrificed in the name of development in Gulfport. Stop destroying our magnificent trees before it is too late.

Gulfport Council Campaign Contributions

Some residents and business owners in Gulfport have made their preferences in the city council election known with their wallets. Here’s the most up-to-date information we have on Gulfport campaign contributions for the Mar. 14 Gulfport City Council elections.

In response to The Gabber’s recent request for campaign financial reports, City Clerk Lesley DeMuth’s office sent copies of financial statements from all five candidates for the two contested races. These reports show Gulfport campaign contributions for each contender, including the names, addresses, and amounts. They also show how the candidates have spent those monies.

Among the most interesting takeaways from an analysis of the candidates’ filings are some of the names on the incumbents’ documents in particular. Both of the current office holders in this

election have received significant financial support from the local police union as well as a contribution from the current mayor, Sam Henderson. One of the incumbents received contributions from two state legislators.

Christine Brown, Incumbent, Ward II

Christine Brown, the incumbent in Ward II, has brought in nearly $7,400 in cash and in-kind contributions through Feb. 28, according to the paperwork she has filed with the city.

That includes $788 Brown contributed to her campaign.

The largest contributors listed in her filings include the Suncoast Police Benevolent Association ($1,000) and John Muehlstrein of Chicago ($970.61). Poul Hornsleth and April Caldwell Hornsleth of Gulfport made a $1,000 contribu-

tion, and two $500 contributions are listed from Hornsleth Sepulveda LLC and Hornsleth Caldwell LLC, both of Gulfport. A late contribution for $1,000 is attributed to Florida Realtors in Orlando.

Others listed as contributors to Brown’s campaign and their addresses include Pavlo Grytsenko of St. Petersburg ($500); Jo Hastings of Gulfport ($250); Lawrence Burke of Gulfport ($200); James Shatz of Gulfport ($193.73); Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson ($110); Barbara Banno of Gulfport ($100); J.H. Sorbo of Gulfport ($100); Tommie Bixler of Goshen, Ohio ($100); Louis Distasio of Gulfport ($50); and Rob Fowler of Gulfport ($18.93).

Brown’s campaign expenditures so far add up to $5,850.81. As did all of the candidates, she spent $159 on her filing fee with the City of Gulfport. The vast majority of the other expenditures are for advertising, including more than

$3,500 with Gulf Coast Imprinting in Largo and a total of $1,793 with The Gabber over a two-month span. Another $180 in advertising was spent with Town Talk in St. Petersburg.

Christopher Butler-Jones, Challenger, Ward II

Christopher Butler-Jones, one of the challengers for Brown’s seat, declared $2,170 in total contributions on his campaign disclosures. That includes three loans he made to the campaign for a total of $1,415. Also listed are a $250 contribution from Richard Jones of Gulfport along with 14 other individual contributors who gave $50 or less. Zhivago Walker’s address is listed in St. Petersburg, and all of the others – Kathy Aumiller (twice); Steve Buddenmeyer (twice); David Kristopher Butler-Jones; Carmen Carlson; Eileen Clancy (twice); David Dalby; Susan Dalby; Heidi Oetting; Kerivaughn Rolle; and Margarete Tober – are in Gulfport.

Expenditures for the Butler-Jones campaign amount to $1,486.09 over the past three months. He has spent $700 with Alex Duensing of Michigan for expenses listed as “campaign manager” and “website and advertising.” Another $558 went to West Main Quick Print in Clearwater for yard signs and flyers. The remainder has gone to advertising equipment, office supplies, and credit card processing fees.

Greg Simek, Challenger, Ward II

Greg Simek, the other Ward II challenger, has declared a total of $50 in cash and $1,899.02 of in-kind contributions through the end of January. He had not yet filed for February when the Gulfport city clerk’s office provided the candidates’ paperwork to The Gabber.

All of the contributions are listed as being from Simek himself, including in-kind services for website services, marketing, and advertising. Simek’s only listed expenditure for December and January is the $159 filing fee at City Hall.

Michael Fridovich, Incumbent, Ward IV

Ward IV incumbent Michael Fridovich has raised $7,170 according to his campaign filings, and he has spent only $1,065 of that.

Like Brown, he received $1,000

from the Suncoast PBA and $110 from Mayor Henderson. Fridovich also loaned his campaign $200 and made a $50 in-kind contribution in the form of signs.

His documents show $1,000 contributions from Mike Fagan, Gini Money continued on page 13

Decision Gulfport: Boca Ciega Yacht Club and RV Parking Part

Three of Three

The Gabber asked the five candidates for Gulfport City Council to answer five questions. Over the last three weeks, we’ve printed their answers. Candidates had 24 hours to answer, as successful candidates will make decisions in real time during meetings. We also gave candidates a word count; when the candidate ran over, we cut the word count at the specified length and indicated as much. We have edited only for syntax and spelling.

What is your position on development or expansion of the marina area and the city’s relationship with the Boca Ciega Yacht Club moving forward? (100 words)

Ward IV

Ian O’Hara, challenger: What plans of expansion? Please clarify for me what these plans are. Here is an example of the city not clarifying and communicating with its constituents. I am not aware of said plans. I am a fan of the

Boca Ciega Yacht Club. It does some fantastic things for low-income children who want to learn how to sail, as well as Sea Scouts.

Michael Fridovich, incumbent: As this is still in litigation it would be irresponsible for me to comment on this issue at the moment.

Ward II

Christine Brown, incumbent: I cannot comment on a lease that has not been presented to council, talks are

still ongoing. The Gulfport Marina is a very active area of our city. Aside from all the boating activity we also have Clam Bayou Nature Trail and soon to come the living shoreline project slated to go in at the BCYC breakwater. BCYC has been part of our community since 1965, promoting sailing, teaching sailing, and fostering an active Sea Scout Ship. By working with all stakeholders and nurturing a culture of respect I believe we can create an inclusive, vibrant vision for our marina.

Christopher Butler-Jones, challenger: We need to be prepared for erosion in our marina area. If elected, it’s a concern that will always be on my radar. As far as the city’s relationship to the Boca Ciega Yacht Club is concerned – this is not a matter for one city councilperson to decide – or even for City Hall to decide. It’s something that will need to come together as a community to figure out. I want to be a part of bringing the community together so as to decide the future of Gulfport. That’s why I am running for office.

Greg Simek, challenger: The Marina stands as a defining feature of the city, anchoring its economy within Gulfport’s hospitality-marina dynamic. To further cultivate this facet of the local economy, the scope of services offered at the Marina should be expanded. I would endeavor to attract a university-funded research center focused on oceanography and climate change to the area. This would bring valuable economic funding and heightened awareness our natural resources.

While the BCYC holds cultural and historical significance, the members-only club enjoys a below-market lease on publicly-owned land, paying a mere $2000/month for three acres of prime and built waterfront. Single parents working...(candidate exceeded word count)

Where do you believe Gulfport should allow homeowners to park their RVs? (100 words)

Ward II

Greg Simek, Challenger: I’m quite frankly bewildered that City Hall has

spent more time & resources on this recent RV ordinance than it collectively has on addressing housing and affordability over the course of the last three years. To me the priorities are wildly out of order here. I’d rewrite the ordinance so that if a homeowner wants to park an RV outdoors then they buy a permit for $365 annually and must maintain the RV to be in good operating and not rented out to tenants. I would then earmark all of that permit revenue to be used exclusively for a community-wide initiative ...(candidate exceeded word count)

Christine Brown, incumbent: The city council is currently considering an ordinance focused on recreational vehicles and how they will fit into our community. Since this is an active discussion before council, I cannot share my specific thoughts. I am asking questions, talking with residents, and most importantly listening to residents. I have also been driving our streets and alleys to get a visual feel of the issue. Folks have a wide range of opinions from “zero tolerance” to “live and let live” and everything in between. I am hopeful that your council will find common ground and a positive solution through mutual compromise.

Christopher Butler-Jones, challenger: I tend to believe that Gulfport residents should be allowed

to park their RVs on their own property. I couldn’t imagine spending so much on a home only to be told by the city that you couldn’t park your RV there. Obviously, safety factors need to be considered. Yet, it’s really not about what I believe. My opinions aren’t the only worthwhile ones or the only ones that matter. It’s about coming together as a community to find win-win solutions. If you have an idea or solution please call me at 727- 564-7038. I’ll listen to you. Jonesy’s got your back.

Ward IV

Michael Fridovich, incumbent: I am waiting to hear all sides of the discussion before making up my mind..and this still coming [up at] council.

Ian O’Hara, challenger: Very simply, if we fix the setback regulations, RVs could be parked in rear yards (backyards) or side of house (side yards) preferably on a pad or gravel ground, behind a fence. Most homes in the city do not have a front yard capacity to have an RV on a driveway. Most lot sizes in the city would not be able to fit an RV. I believe big questions like this should go to a referendum so our community can be heard. So, to simply answer the question, I am opposed to RVs being parked in front yards.

Beach Boulevard Plan Gets CRA Approval

A plan to develop a vacant lot on Beach Boulevard in downtown Gulfport received final city approval. The Beach Boulevard building, when done, will offer rentals and retail space.

Gulfport City Council, acting in its role as Gulfport’s Community Redevelopment Agency, approved an application for a mixed-use two-story building adjacent to BoTiki, with a plan to connect the two structures.

The Guenther family owns both properties; they have already renovated the building that currently houses BoTiki.

“The building will actually physically touch the existing structure that is there, with fire separation,” said Joe Guenther, the applicant.

This was attempted about a year ago, with plans drawn up to keep the same elevation on the new building as the slab at BoTiki in the event they might one day be connected, according to Guenther. That was not successful because of Federal Emergency Management Agency regulations.

“We ran into a roadblock with floodproofing,” said Guenther. “We got a new engineer and a new architect, and drew up a new plan which raises that slab to meet the FEMA flood zone requirement.”

The new building on Beach Bou-

levard will have retail space on the ground floor along with three residential units above it. The drawings submitted to the City showed an arcade-style building that Guenther said ties in with “Gulfport’s charm and quaintness.”

The site will have 10 parking spaces in the back. City Manager Jim O’Reilly noted that Guenther received a parking variance from the

Board of Adjustment.

When asked about the specifications for the downstairs commercial space, Guenther said that would be built to suit. “We will research that and find the highest and best use for it, and build accordingly.”

As for the construction schedule once approval was granted, Guenther said he would be “looking to submit for permitting right away.”.

Have a Plant or Tree Questions? Ask Toffer!

Hi. It’s me. You know – the old(ish) woman wearing the green shirt and green cap with the Gulfport logo? Freakishly skinny legs? Yep, that’s me.

I’ve been tasked with writing a column a couple of times a month or so about things related to horticulture and landscaping. Specifically, those things occurring in around the coolest little city on the west coast of Florida: Gulfport.

After more than four decades of doing this type of work in this area, I’ve come to expect the same questions from the residents of Tampa Bay at around the same time every year. And what would the perpetual March questions be about?

Oaks.

“What can I do about these LEAVES?” they ask.

“What is that mustard yellow powder that’s suddenly all over everything?” they entreat.

My favorite question – “Why are little worms falling from the sky?” – is followed closely by the runner-up favorite question: “Why are my acorns deformed?” Then, about the time I am having trouble breathing because of stifled laughter, they drop the Grand Finale Question: “Why do the squirrels throw the acorns at me?”

So here are the short answers along with some important descriptive information. There are two species of oak trees that are the most common in Gulfport (and in the Tampa Bay area in general): the laurel oak and the live oak. Both species are native to Florida and Tampa Bay, but the live oak is the one that was here before we were.

The laurel oak ( quercus laurifolia ) grows in a traditional shape with a straight trunk and a rounded crown. Think “lollipop.” The bark is fairly smooth. Although there

are slight genetic and regional differences in each tree’s behavior, they tend to drop their leaves in February. The mature leaves of the laurel oak are a true green color and, when the new leaves emerge shortly after the old leaves drop off, they will appear to be an almost fluorescent lime green.

Just after the old leaves drop and before the new leaves appear, little clusters of pollen (aka “flowers”) appear and all hell breaks loose. Then comes the hailstorm of acorns. Laurel acorns look like a “normal” (read: northern) acorn and don’t tend to cause any concern amongst the humans.

The other species of local oak is the live oak (quercus virginiana). This tree might start out lollypop-ish, but starts to branch out with long curvy, sprawling limbs. Each live oak develops a unique shape unlike any other live oak. Their bark has more grooves – it looks a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. The mature leaves have a bluish cast on the top and

Lundh Named Gulfport Deputy Fire Chief

On the heels of appointing Rene Fernandez as Gulfport’s new fire chief earlier this year, the City named James Lundh Gulfport’s deputy chief. The City presented the change to the community as such at the Gulfport City Council’s Feb. 7 regular meeting.

After Sharon Farrell, filling in as city clerk for the meeting, administered the oath of office, Fernandez announced who would perform the ceremonial task of pinning Lundh’s uniform: his daughter Kayla, who entered the room wearing her own Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy uniform. Lundh’s wife was also in attendance, as were a number of members of the department.

“Yes, that was a surprise,” he said when asked about his daughter’s appearance. “Usually she is working.”

Before Fernandez was appointed chief in January, he and Lundh were the only two captains in the department.

Lundh’s career has made him quite familiar with all of Pinellas County. He worked in the past with the arson investigation unit at the Sheriff’s Office, and he retired from the Seminole Fire Department after 20 years of service and reaching the rank of lieutenant as well as serving as fire marshal.

But Gulfport has been familiar terri-

tory since his youth, when he moved to the area with his family. He graduated from Boca Ciega High School, as did his wife, whose family has lived in Gulfport for decades.

He started working part-time in Gulfport in 2014, when he was still on the job in Seminole, then moved to a full-time position in 2019 after retirement.

According to the city’s website, his most recent duties include fire marshal/inspector/EMT captain. He also holds an engineering degree as well as nearly a dozen certifications relat-

ed to his fire department work.

Except for some additional paperwork, the rest of Lundh’s job remains mostly the same. He still represents the department at City Council meetings, always with a smile. This fits with his profile as a very familiar face around town.

“They know me,” he said of people in Gulfport. “It’s a great community.”

Unlike some smaller cities, Gulfport has both its own fire department and police department. The fire department includes EMTs, firefighters, and a fire marshal.

Fagan, John Muehlstein, and Poul Hornsleth. Muehlstein and Hornsleth gave similar amounts to Brown.

State Rep. Ben Diamond’s campaign organization, known as Friends of Ben Diamond, based in Tallahassee, made a $500 contribution. State Rep. Lindsay Cross made $35 contribution. Both these state legislators represent portions of Pinellas County.

Other contributors for Fridovich include Alex Sink of Thonotosassa ($250); Joe Guenther of Gulfport ($250); Andrea Kit of Gulfport ($250); Al Johnson of St. Pete Beach ($200); Jeffrey Plummer of Gulfport ($100); Dan Liedtke of St. Pete Beach ($100); and Biff Lagan of Gulfport ($100).

Fridovich has only declared spending money for the city filing fee, $180 to Town Talk in St. Petersburg for advertising, and $726 for ads in The Gabber.

Ian O’Hara, Challenger, Ward IV

Ian O’Hara, Fridovich’s lone opponent, has reported $6,150.61 in cash and in-kind contributions.

Four people registered $500 contributions: Yolanda Roman of Philadelphia, Penn.; and Gulfport residents Dawn Fisher, Tom Kupfer, and April Hornsleth. O’Hara loaned his campaign $300 and Gerard O’Regan of Gulfport contributed an equal amount.

Mark and Deb Adkins of Gulfport contributed $250, as did Patti and Lawrence Burke of Gulfport. Douglas Hudson of Gulfport filed a $200 contribution, the same as Mike and Cathy Kania of Gulfport.

Other cash contributors include David Hastings of Gulfport ($180); D.C. Hastings of Gulfport ($120); Edward Duensing of Gulfport ($100); Barbara Banno of Gulfport ($100); Rod Kreimeyer and Nancy Wallenburg of St. Petersburg ($100); Nancy Kelly and Ann Marie Anderson of Gulfport ($100); and Julia Soebo of

Gulfport ($100). Karen of Gulfport and Michael of Gulfport, whose last names were illegible on the paperwork The Gabber received, made $100 contributions.

O’Hara noted more than $1,500 worth of in-kind contributions from nearly 10 different donors, covering materials for campaign events as well as office supplies and other needs. Several citizens also made cash donations of $50 or less.

Out of $3,440.38 in total expenditures, the largest items were $1,790.23 for printing and mailing services to Alex Duensing of Gulfport, along with $500 for advertising in The Gabber. The rest was designated for a wide variety of basic expenses from campaign signs to business cards and office supplies.

“Anarkitty...were graduates of the Girls Rock St. Pete, and they’re touring the country. They’re going to be playing at the festival too, which is pretty cool,” DiVenuti said.

The event originated from the ProSisters, a women’s nonprofit online radio station started and operated by DiVenuti. ProSisters sponsors this event along with Equality Florida, Neptune Grill, Hurricane Eddie’s Gulfport, Caddy’s, and Compassionate Care Clinics of Pinellas.

Oatley explained they plan to have several speakers at the event, including a spokesperson for Equality Florida, a political group advocating for the civil rights for LGBTQ residents, to talk about the issues in this state.

“A lot of people stick their heads in the sand about what’s really going on to the LGBTQ community, not just Florida, but we have to continue to be out and proud,” DiVenuti said. “We can’t be scared back into the closet anymore.”

The festival hosts more than 20

vendors inside and outside the Casino, including “community organizations, healthcare providers, rainbow gear for pets, tasty food and drink, legal services, home improvement, and local businesses,” according to Oatley.

“We appreciate the city working with us to make the Casino space available because we are a nonprof-

it organization. They always help us have a really good event,” Oatley said.

This is an opportunity for Gulfportians to celebrate peace, love, and take pride in the community they live in.

Oak Season continued from page 9

a grayish hue on the bottom, giving the leaf an overall sandy green cast. They start their leaf drop shortly after the beginning of the laurel oak’s leaf drop. The flowers (aka “pollen”) do the same routine as that of the laurel oak. Fall, sneeze, repeat. The live oak acorns, however, are a non-conforming oblong shape. Deformed? No, just a weird “Southern Thang.”

And those worms? Good news! You won’t have to worry about them until April. They’re called ‘leafrollers’ and are characterized by oodles of long silk threads which dangle from the oaks with itty bitty inchworm-style caterpillars attached. No worries: They don’t sting, and they’re not poisonous; they just hang out waiting to metamorphose into a cute little moth.

The rumors are true: Oak leaves are the best mulch that you will never pay for.

However, it is perfectly OK to rake or blow them into a pile to be bagged and sent to a needy landfill. It is perfectly OK to pay someone else to do that for you. Stimulate that economy.

As for the squirrels, let them work on their target practice. Every time they miss, an acorn might slip beneath the soil. Somehow, someone (if just an angry squirrel) has got to plant the oak trees.

Real Life Ace Ventura How a Pet Detective Found Missing St. Pete Cat

Chappy, a tuxedo tabby, spent a long eight days on the streets of St. Pete. With the help of a pet detective in Fort Lauderdale and a St. Pete woman trying to find a lost dog, Chappy returned home safely.

Chappy is a 6-year-old indoor cat who does not wear a collar. On the morning of Feb. 12, a gust of wind blew open the door to the house where Chappy lives. Owners Arin Greenwood and Ray Lehmann couldn’t move fast enough to grab the startled cat as he made a beeline for the door.

The couple posted flyers around the neighborhood  and searched for him for hours each day (and night) around their neighborhood. After posting on social media, people tagged Pet Detective Jamie Katz in Greenwood’s comments.

“I think 50 people must have tagged her on my Facebook posts,” Greenwood said. “Finally she reached out to me and said, ‘People keep tagging me. I can’t travel to you, but I can consult with you on the phone if you want’.”

Katz is a licensed private investigator specializing in “reuniting lost, missing, and stolen pets with their families.” In 2016, she started her own pet detective agency and traveled the country to help reunite pets

with owners. In 2020, she decided to work from home in Fort Lauderdale. Now, she offers on-location and off-location services, depend-

ing on clients’ situations. Her on-location service includes her scent-specific tracking dogs, Fletcher and Gable. The process

starts with the dogs sniffing the missing pet’s collar, or a floof of hair from a brush. Starting at the point of escape, the two sniff out direction of travel. Katz then creates weatherproof, bright colored signs to post around the perimeter the dogs discovered.

In Chappy’s case, Katz provided off-location services. She curated a “lost pet” poster and suggested placement for them. She also guided them through answering phone calls as well.

“The first thing she taught us that we didn’t have nearly enough signs. They weren’t colorful enough. They weren’t big enough, and they weren’t in the right places. And they didn’t have a reward,” Lehmann said.

“Somebody can call me and I’ll go through their case and I’ll tell them this is what you need to fix,” Katz said. “They don’t even need to hire me. I don’t mind helping so they can at least get their case set up correctly.”

With the new signs around the neighborhood, a woman texted Greenwood’s number around 1 a.m. on Feb. 20, eight days after Chappy had gone missing. While searching for her friend’s missing chihuahua, she spotted a black and white cat.

It was Chappy. He had been hiding under Greenwood’s next door neighbor’s porch.

“Now that he’s home, he’s act-

ing like nothing ever happened,” Greenwood said.

The chihuahua remains lost, and the woman who was out looking for it (she does not own the chihuahua) when she found Chappy, refused the reward.

“Sara, who found Chappy, asked us to donate it to help [a] dog whose family couldn’t afford her surgery,” Greenwood said. “Sara works at a vet clinic and is seeing a lot of pets whose owners are struggling to pay for vet care

Gulfport’s Junk Drop What You Need To Know About the Upcoming Electronics Collection

Question: Could you tell me the date this year for [electronics and chemical] recycling? I have a few electronics to dispose of and have not noticed an article in The Gabber.   –Pat Edwards

Answer: According to Gulfport Public Works Director Tom Nicholls, the City of Gulfport will have a “junk drop” on May 6. The drop allows people to safely dispose of chemicals and electronics. Putting these items in a trash can for regular trash collection presents risks of fire in the trucks, as well as potential chemical and air contamination. Items brought to the collection get safely disposed of and, when applicable, earmarked for recycling. Not all recyclable items get recycled due to lack of demand for recycled materials.

Nicholls said the city would have an

ad in The Gabber closer to the event, and we’ll also list the event in our “Things to do” calendar online and in print.

Stella!!!! This kitty loves pets, exploring, and playing with toys. Also, she’s blind. No one knows what caused this 5-year-old kitty to go blind, or if she was born that way, but it doesn’t slow her down. Stella needs a little time to adapt to her new environment, but if you adopt this blind kitty, you’ll get rewarded with a happy, social kitty cat.

Check Out These New Businesses in South Pinellas

Smack My Axe opened its doors to the people of Gulf Boulevard on March 1, and some say, an indoor axe-throwing range is exactly what St. Pete Beach needed.

Ditch the basic bullseye target and try Smack My Axe’s state-of-the-art projection technology. Throwers can launch axes at zombies, play tic-tactoe, duck hunt, and engage in other interactive games.

“We are different than other axe-throwing places. Some of those other ones are more of a northwestern feel or a lumberjack kind of deal,” one of the owners, Lee Morris, told The Gabber. “We are more on the cool vibe side; kind of a club scene with lots of colors and lights.”

Guests can order food and drinks from their business neighbor, Category 36 Taphouse and Kitchen, to give their throwing arm a little break.

Morris and his partners, Aaron Smekal and Dale Zwick, plan their official ribbon cutting ceremony for March 30 at 4:30 p.m. This event is free for guests to experience the special high-tech target projections on any of the eight throwing lanes. All guests must wear closed-toed shoes to throw.

Smack My Axe, 7460 Gulf Blvd., St Pete Beach. Wed.-Fri. 2 p.m.-10 p.m., Sat.-Sun., 12 p.m.-10 p.m.

Kindness and Fitness

Gulfport’s newest fitness club, The Athleticus, opened Jan. 23 in a bright yellow building on 49th Street South.

This locally owned gym offers an hourly personal training program and free assessment. Owner Olya Schaefer is one of the four certified personal coaches on The Athleticus team.

When Schaefer moved to St. Pete in 2014, she went to various gyms and personal trainers around the city.

“They knew their stuff for sure, but it didn’t feel like often they could step into the shoes of someone else,” Schaefer said.

She says that’s what inspired her to open The Athleticus as a small “neighborhood gym.” Her goal is to have an empathetic and motivating fitness environment.

“It’s a small space. We’re keeping it small on purpose,” Schaefer said. “We want to know every single person, like, we want to know their birthdays, we text them. I want to keep it that way. I like it that way.”

With the smaller gym space, its easier to hold one-on-one sessions between the clients and coaches, according to Schaefer.

All of the coaches are certified trainers with other backgrounds involving health and fitness. Head Coach Álvaro Betancourt is a chiropractor. He uses his medical background to help his clients customize fitness plans that focus on injury recovery, strength, and nutrition.

“So every program is definitely based around the client’s goal. Whatever your goal is, we’ll work towards it,” Betancourt said.

Where The Banned

Books

Are St. Pete’s Banned Books Library

Banned books? Not here. American Stage, Keep St. Pete Lit, and Tombolo Books created a banned books library, and on Feb. 18, the St. Petersburg theater company on 3rd Street North opened the library, stocked with books banned from Florida public schools.

House Bill 1467

This collaboration sparked from recent removals of classroom books thanks to House Bill 1467. This leg-

islation requires materials in public school districts in Florida to undergo an approval process before students use them.

One book that didn’t meet with approval caught the eye of American Stage’s Director of Marketing Avery Anderson: Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye

After remembering he read this exact book in high school, Anderson didn’t want to ignore this. Anderson reached out to Keep St. Pete Lit. This led to St. Pete Lit organizing the

book drive for the library.

“I still can’t believe that people actually think banning books is OK. It’s mind-blowing to me, especially because the books that are banned represent diversity and inclusion,” said Maureen McDole, founder and executive director of Keep St. Pete Lit. “It infuriates me and I am so grateful to be able to create a space for people to read the books if they want, whenever they want.”

Find St. Pete’s Banned Books Library

Visitors can find the library in the American Stage lobby. The library is free for students.

“I would love to see people in and out every day, taking books, and sharing the ideas behind them,” Anderson said.

St. Pete’s Tombolo Books has a section of banned books online and in store. This includes The Bluest Eye for any interested buyers.

Anyone can donate to the library. If you purchase a blacklisted book from Tombolo Books for the library, Keep St. Pete Lit will transfer them for you.

gabber on vacation

Guess which group of Gulfport travelers decided to take The Gabber Caribbean cruising? The Embassy building at Town Shores loves to go cruising – not the building itself, of course, but the people who live there.

Pictured: Dot Bross; Bruce Donath; Winnie Freed; Thomas Garro; Debi Horne; Kris Kemp; Denise Lesinger; Pat Monnia; Susanne Noe; Steve Spears; Jan Speers; Sandi Speers; Sharon Tucker; Dot and  Joe Watt; and Ray Waynick. That’s a lot of cruisers – and a lot of cruising!

Have you taken The Gabber somewhere? We want to see your pictures! Please send a high-resolution photo and a brief description to news@thegabber.com. Check out who else took The Gabber on vacation!
