Follow the Money

I very much appreciated the article in the Feb. 20 The Gabber Newspaper about campaign contributions and I was happy to see so many local people contributing to their chosen candidate. I was especially interested in seeing a contribution to Tom Bixler from Project Conservative Values and I wonder if this group supports one of our town mottos, “Keep Gulfport Weird!”

—Mickey Alberts, concerned Gulfportian

Thanks for your article in the last Gabber, “Follow the Money.” As I read it, one particular donation to candidate Tom Bixler piqued my curiosity — $250 accepted from an organization reported by his campaign as “Conservative Pinellas,” but, according to The Gabber is officially registered as “Protect Conservative Values.”

On their website, protectconservativevalues.com, the information about their “values” is sparse and vague but, prominently posted on the front page is “Representative Mike Hill is associated with Protect Conservative Values.” A quick search into Rep. Mike Hill reveals that he was removed from the Florida House Public Integrity and Ethics Committee in 2019 after controversial and offensive remarks about the LGBTQ community.

So if Tom Bixler is aligned with such a group, is he really a good fit for Gulfport?

—Carolyn Nell, Gulfport

An earlier version of the “Follow the Money” article listed a different total for Tom Bixler’s total contributions with in-kind donations; we’ve updated the article to reflect this, and included the correct information.

The Gabber Newspaper  regrets the error.

Got Ethics?

Our hometown paper The Gabber Newspaper in Gulfport, Florida runs an article about the candidate in the

local election trying to bribe one of their reporters to write an article favorable to him — opposite his fullpage ad for the local election next week. MAGA is corrupt from the top to the bottom. This kind of journalism is why they think that media is the “enemy of the people” when it’s really “the people’s most important asset.”

I especially love how the paper brought in a reporter from outside to write the article so they can’t be accused of any bias in this issue. They are successfully walking the line to remain neutral in the election. Thanks for your reporting on this most ugly election.

—Chris Kieff, Gulfport, via Facebook

It’s quite ironic that [Tom] Bixler’s campaign manager wants to report violations re: a missing disclaimer. When he ran for office, in St. Pete, his election signs appeared not to have the very disclaimer of which he speaks.

—Margarete Tober, Gulfport

Reading this week’s Gabber, my eyes saw a headline on the top of page 13 — Got Ethics? At the bottom left of the same page my eyes saw — the crucifixions advertisement.

—Alan James, Gulfport

Thoughts on the Newspaper

While generally happy to read each week’s issue of The Gabber, I felt personally compiled to thank you ALL for this week’s edition and to comment on the ‘voices’ page specifically.

Firstly, excited by the cover page and the promise of actual in-depth coverage on the ethics of our current political climate — and the writer Sebastián González de León y León did not disappoint! I can only trust that the voters of our community will see through how this campaign is being run and vote accordingly.

Also greatly appreciated the background note provided online by Ms. Cathy.

Secondly, I would like to voice an opinion on Ms. Olga May Starr’s take

2 thegabber.com | March 21, 2024 - March 27, 2024
REMEMBER: “...if we cannot depend on journalistic ethics, the nation’s in trouble.” —Dave Brat

(and others’) on the ‘crucifixion’ ad — while not knowing what entity might be behind these paid ads, I myself have always enjoyed the humor behind them, and been disappointed when not finding the little black box in the weekly edition.

Regardless of their specific content, I have always found food for thought, and would hope that they are not turned down (i.e. ‘banned’) from future issues.

Really just wanted to ensure that a positive response to your recent publishing decisions was offered. Thanks again y’all!

—Will Randazzo, Gulfport

Publisher’s Note

The crucifixion ad — and others in the black box like it — are a paid advertisement. The advertiser is not otherwise associated with The Gabber Newspaper. The advertiser intends them as satire. In the March 14 edition, the ad appeared on page 14.

Dog Park

Chase Dog Park issues brought up during public comments at City Council meeting were mentioned in this week’s Gabber , and it was noted Councilperson April Thanos had researched some alternatives to sod.

What was omitted was the difference in the cost of current resodding and the very significantly reduced cost of material Ms. Thanos had found as an alternative.

Currently, the dog park requires re-sodding three times a year at a cost of $18,000 according to Councilwoman Thanos. The alternative lasts for 2-4 years and costs between $2,800-$5,600.

Calculating the savings over a four year period and the reduced maintenance of Chase Dog Park, I find it rather odd the saving was deemed unimportant.

Taxpayer monies should be examined with a critical eye and toward reducing costs, and I believe your readers would appreciate knowing an effort is being made to better use funds.

Wicked Cantina

Regarding the review of Wicked Cantina St. Pete dated March 8, 2024, you must admit reviewing a restaurant on day two of business is harsh by any standard, and although we have two existing locations, this is a new restaurant with a new staff.

The reason for my letter is to address a couple of statements in the review which were incorrect. Our house margarita is our absolute customer favorite and is not made with agave syrup. If any of our staff informed you one of the ingredients was agave, we apologize. We’ve never used it in the house marg, which is pure and free of any sugars or mixers. We’re glad you enjoyed them! Also, you won’t find any Velveeta in our

kitchen. Wicked Queso is one of our favorite appetizers and is topped with ground beef, guacamole, and pico, and served with homemade tortilla chips. We hope you’ll be back to try it again once the opening frenzy subsides.  We want to express our gratitude for the community’s enthusiasm and support during our opening [and] we believe “your vibe attracts your tribe”, and already feel welcome as a great addition to the dining landscape of West St. Petersburg. We’re committed to investing in live music daily and offering free chips and salsa, as we plan to be a favorite neighborhood hangout. Thank you for the opportunity to clarify these details, and we hope to see you soon.

A Real Life Toy Story

Take A Toy, Leave A Toy at the St. Pete Beach Toy Box

In 1912, Juliette Gordon Low founded the first Girl Scout Troop. From 12 members to more than 2.5 million, the troops across the country work hard to serve their communities. In St. Pete Beach, a scout from Troop 60912 made her own contribution to Pass-A-Grille beach. 14-year-old Isabella G. (The Gabber Newspaper did not have permission to use her last name) recently built and installed a Take a Toy, Leave a Toy box on the beach.

Isabella joined the Girl Scouts

when she was 5 years old. Now that she is 14, she’s working on earning her Silver Award. According to a press release, the project “focuses on a sustainable idea to help the community.” The project needs to be a reusable item, or a service that can continue without Isabella’s assistance.

Building St. Pete. Beach’s Toy Box

Isabella’s box is made similarly to a dock, with, “pressure treated

wood, stainless steel deck screws, and Thompson water seal stain for decks.” With it sitting on the beach, the dock needs let water drain. Isabella faced many challenges, but none more than, “how long it took to design and build the project, and learning how to use a table saw and router.”

After her project hit the beach, the City expressed interest in a similar project to replace the St. Pete beach toy box on Upham Beach.

Elections continued from cover

“I’m so appreciative of the support from Gulfport,” said Thanos. “I’m very excited to do what the City wants.”

Thanos will be sworn in at the April 2 Gulfport City Council meeting.

Gulfport Ward I Election Watch Parties

Thanos held her watch party at the North End Taphouse. A crowd of more than 100 people began to gather in the Village Courtyard around 5:30 p.m. Live music from supporters and a victory speech from Thanos quickly followed.

Bixler’s party was at O’Maddy’s Bar and Grille. Roughly 20 people came to support him, including Ward IV Councilmember Ian O’Hara, who later came to the Taphouse to congratulate Thanos.

He was the only councilmember who did.

Bixler arrived to the party around 7:25 p.m., and began serving shrimp, fried okra, mac-and-cheese poppers, and jalapeño poppers.

Despite Mayor Sam Henderson not attending either watch party, he had a few words about the Gulfport Ward I election results.

“I respect the choice of the electorate and will do my best to work with that person, but I certainly have some questions for the Supervisor of Elections about the way the campaign was handled,” said Henderson.

After the results were finalized, Bixler spoke with The Gabber Newspaper.

“It was a great experience and I

met a lot of wonderful people along the way,” said Bixler. “Hopefully my opponent will work as hard in office from now on as she has to win a re-election. I wish her the best of luck. Anything to move Gulfport into the future.”

Thanos’ Campaign History

Thanos began her service to Gulfport in 2020 when she beat Dan Liedtke 2,243 to 1,497. In 2022, she ran unopposed.

Controversy at O’Maddy’s

Once the results came out, Susan Gore made her way to O’Maddy’s. Gore says she entered the bar and approached Bixler to offer him and

O’Hara a drink. After being told she wasn’t welcome at the private party, she went to ask the wait staff of the restaurant if it was a private party. They told her they didn’t know. One of Bixler’s supporters approached her to ask her to leave, and they spoke as they walked out.

“There could be a recount,” said Bixler’s supporter.

“Oh, honey,” said Gore.

When she returned to the North End Taphouse, she spoke with The Gabber Newspaper about the incident.

“I didn’t do anything wrong! I didn’t hit anybody or take my clothes off or anything,” said a celebratory Gore. “A dirty campaign didn’t succeed this time. It’s not what Gulfport wanted.”

Arden You Ready?

Treasure Island and Madeira Beach Election Results

The votes are in and the winner of the Mar. 19 District IV Treasure Island City Commission is Arden Dickey. Dickey received 290 votes, while his opponent Richard Harris received 154 votes. Dickey, a resident of Florida since 1968 and Treasure Island since 2007, begins his term as a City Commissioner at the next Treasure Island City Commission meeting.

Harris, a 37 year resident of Treasure Island, worked diligently to win the race.

“What I can say is, ‘I came in second!’” said Harris. “Let’s just say I didn’t let him walk into the seat unopposed.”

Although Dickey was unavailable for comment, he spoke with The Gabber Newspaper about his goals for the City.

“I love this community. It’s very well-run now, and it is something that I thought about doing in the past, but I didn’t want to jump in before I had the time,” said

Dickey. “This is a great community and I want it to stay the way it is.”

“We have infrastructure issues that need to be addressed. We have serious problems with drainage in areas that are prone to flooding,” said Dickey. “I’ve heard a lot of small complaints from residents here and there that can be easily addressed.”

Madeira Beach Amendment

While both incumbents for Madeira Beach, David Tagliarini (District 1) and Ray Kerr (District 2) won their unopposed races, a new charter amendment did not. The proposed amendment would’ve changed the qualifying period to run for office from the first two weeks of December to the first week of December. The amendment didn’t pass with 235 votes for yes and 425 votes for no.

Container House is Back City Whys: Construction at Gulfport’s Container House

This week, a reader asks about construction at Gulfport’s container house.

Question:

Can someone from The Gabber Newspaper get the scoop on what’s going on with restarting construction on the infamous “container house” on 49th Street South? I’m sure many people would like to know how and why it stopped and seems to be beginning again after a few years of inaction. Thanks. —Daniel Hodge, Gulfport

Answer:

Gulfport’s container house in question sits at 2931 49th St. S. The duo of Connie Wilhelm-Miller and Buba Barrow began development of the unique house in 2021. Partially made of old shipping containers, the house is resistant to the elements and parasites while also being environmentally friendly to build. In 2023, construction of the house

stopped, as the permits had run out. The Gabber Newspaper spoke with Mark Griffin, planner with the City of Gulfport, to find out more about the construction resuming at Gulfport’s container house.

“The permit for the front half of the house was reactivated with a new contractor,” said Griffin. “The back half is still under a stop work order.”

Dawg Needs A Brewski A Pinellas Brewery Guide with the Gulp Coast Passport

It’s time for a new passport. This one isn’t for traveling outside of the country, but to Pinellas County’s breweries. The Gulp Coast Passport program relaunched in honor of Tampa Bay Beer Week.

The Gulp Coast Passport helps gulpers navigate to 41 TampaBay-owned craft breweries. Visit St. Pete/Clearwater described the “Gulp Coast” as an “an incomparable vacation spot where you can sample the unique creations of talented brewmasters.”

The Gulp Coast Passport

There are three regions in the Gulp Coast: north, central, and south gulp coast.

The passport lists 17 breweries in

the north region. Most of these establishments are in Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor, Dunedin, and parts of Clearwater. The passport’s website said that many breweries in the north region live in unique spaces such as an old pharmacy or a fire station. A handful of breweries are next to the Pinellas trail for bikers looking for a rest stop.

In the central region, the Gulp Coast Passport’s website says visitors can find “hole-in-the-wall brew gems to sophisticated craft beer meccas.” The central region consists of Clearwater, Largo, Safety Harbor, and Seminole breweries. There are seven spots in this region.

The south region has 16 “off-thebeaten-path neighborhood spots”

and breweries with scenic views at the beaches according the Gulp Coast Passport. This region includes St. Petersburg, St. Pete Beach, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and Gulfport. Some may recognize spots like Dissent Craft Brewing Company, Gulfport Brewery, and Mastry’s Brewing Co.

Get Your Brew On

Gulp Coast Passport users receive select deals and discounts at participating locations. It’s free to sign up at visitstpeteclearwater. com/gulpcoast. When hopping from one brewery to another, report the visited Gulp Coast location on the app. Users can cash in points from visiting locations for a special Gulp Coast T-shirt with a design of Florida on the front and the breweries listed on the back.

“Last year, we had more than 10,000 people take part in our passport program,” said Brian Lowack, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater President/ CEO. “Our local breweries love to share their craft with visitors and residents. With this new passport, we’re looking to continue to shine a light on a truly unique aspect of our destination — the Gulp Coast!”

TESTIMONIAL

Hi! I wanted to let you know that I had a customer come to my shop last week after seeing my ad on the front page of The Gabber. She came looking for clothing items she needed for a trip and loved our shop. She found several pieces of clothing and gifts, and said she couldn’t fit anymore in her suitcase, that she’d return. She gave us a 5-star review the next day! Thanks, Gabber!

Dive into the World of Gator Poaching

Rebecca Renner’s Book Gator Country

Sure, you think you know Florida Man (if not personally, at least through his impressive collection of headlines and TikToks). But do you know Florida Man?

This seems to be the real question at the heart of Rebecca Renner’s riveting new book, Gator Country: Deception, Danger, and Alligators in the Everglades (Flatiron Books, 2023). The true-crime tale does offer a satisfying deep dive into all three topics: deception, danger, and alligators. But important questions about class, identity, and prejudice bubble up from the depths of this swamp story.

Going Undercover

Gator Country centers around Jeff Babauta, a conscientious, heart-ofgold Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer who goes undercover as a start-up alligator farmer. As the heart of Operation Alligator Thief, Jeff’s alter-ego helped to convict nine men who collectively poached nearly 10,000 alligator eggs. While playing his part to the hilt, Barbauta is wracked with inner turmoil. He knows that a lot of folks who poach gators love them as much as he does. But they suffer from a perennial lack of good choices.

This idea — that a person can love the swamp while breaking rules designed to protect it — should not be revolutionary. But it is, especially when rural folks continue to be poorly understood and butts of so many jokes. Renner doughtily expounds on this conflict. She unearths the stories of old Florida gladesmen whose lives were profoundly changed by the “reclamation” of the Everglades and the subsequent arrival of the national park. Her field research, and her rich retelling of Babauta’s experience in the underbelly of gator harvesting, humanize this issue. Skillfully drawn

characters alone make Gator Country a book worth reading.

The Real Florida

But for Renner, it seems, this point isn’t merely important; it’s personal. She begins the book with an account from her time as a high school English teacher. A student casually mentions that “somebody who isn’t me” is poaching palmetto berries for $60 a bag. This is nothing new, she explains. In this less-glamorous part of Florida, kids are familiar from a young age with the idea that “sometimes you have to do questionable things in order to survive.”

Renner’s investment in the issue powers Gator Country with plenty of passion and insight. It also points to a larger issue. “Just as writers miss the majesty of the Everglades

while they’re determined to find something else, writers miss the people of the Everglades, too,” she writes. “They get one concept of their minds – Florida Man, say – or they’re too busy playing adventurer, and they manage to walk by the truly extraordinary without a second glance.”

There were moments when, I felt, Renner overplayed her Florida native advantage. After all, some of the authors who wrote most deeply and lovingly about this state weren’t from it. Some are born Floridian; some achieve Floridian. Nevertheless, checking our transplant privilege is critical in a state so transformed, and so often marred, by visions of paradise imported from distant climes.

All this, and plenty of gators, too. My advice: snap Gator Country right up!

Unique Neighborhood Craft Beers

St. Pete’s Dissent Craft Brewing Company

Can’t decide on one drink? Try a beer sampler at Dissent Craft Brewing Company.

The Tampa Bay beer scene has lit up throughout the past few years. Downtown St. Pete is crawling with craft breweries, but what I’ve noticed is more and more independent brewery owners taking up shop in lesser-known parts of town — areas without lots of trendy bars or restaurants. Dissent Craft Brewing Company is one of the hottest new neighborhood gems to pop up in Lealman. Dissent is located in the Haines Road strip mall, and if you aren’t looking for it, you’ll drive right past it. What this microbrewery lacks in curb appeal is more than made up for in their ever-rotating and innovative beer lineup.

What to Expect

The taproom is small and cozy, with the majority of the space dedicated to stainless steel mash tanks and fermentation vats. All 21 beers on draft are Dissent’s own label and are made on-site. Brewmasters Jeremy and Ryan have made it their mission to build a line of “unspoken ales” that exemplify niche, small batch brewing. Expect everything from imperial stouts and brown ales, to IPAs and Hefeweizens. It’s a solid roster of brews in an area that desperately needs a little liquid courage.

I love Berliner-style beers. They

tend to be on the sour side. I was more than delighted to see that Dissent Craft Brewing Company has six Berliner beers on tap. Armed with a tasting flight ($15) and a couple of extra pours ($3.75 each), I sampled all the sour beer Dissent has to offer. Mother of Dragons is one of their most popular selections. It is made with passion fruit and subtle hints of scotch bonnet. The Blueberry Marshmallow Berliner Weisse and the orange-flavored Tangarang are close runners up. One of my favorites was Can’t Catch Me — a Berlin-

er brew loaded with gingerbread. It tasted like Christmas in a cup.

Try This Drink

One of Dissent’s best sellers is the Annual Passholder. It’s a Berliner-style beer with loads of pineapple and vanilla soft serve, inspired by the Dole Whip at Disney. In fact, hundreds of pounds of pineapple purée went into the making of this brew alone. The hints of pineapple and vanilla round the beer so it’s more of a liquified, alcohol-laced popsicle. The name ‘Dissent’ fits perfectly as most of their beers go against the traditional grain.

Every pint is full of flavor at Dissent. And it’s not too late to partake in the 2024 Ale Trail. Visit any of the participating breweries (Dissent included) to pick up your passport and start collecting stamps on BOGO beers. The Ale Trail is a fun way to experience microbreweries from Brooksville to Sarasota, to Lakeland and Clearwater.  What are you waiting for? Join the rebellion and grab a pint at Dissent Craft Brewing Company.  Dissent Craft Brewing Company, 5518 Haines Road N., St. Petersburg. Mon., 3-9 p.m, Tues., 12-10 p.m., Wed.Thurs., 12-9:30 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 12-10 p.m., Sun., 12-7:30 p.m., 727-827-7129, dissentcraftbrewing.com.

Gulfport’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Gulfport loves to party, no matter the holiday. St. Patrick’s Day is a whole occasion when you’re at O’Maddy’s on the corner of Shore Boulevard. Every year, O’Maddy’s hosts a St. Paddy’s Day Waterfront Street Party with live music, an abundance of beers and drinks, and celebratory merch.

This daylong-celebration started at 10 a.m., but real ones know the party always starts when O’Maddy’s opens for the day. The Gulfport restaurant served green beer and Irish specials, including corned beef and cabbage.

People dressed in their best green apparel, leprechaun costumes, and beaded, shamrock necklaces. Live entertainment performed all day. Under a large tent, tables with chairs and a small, elevated stage covered the street between O’Maddy’s and Williams Pier.

Waterfront Street Party

This year, the Seminole band HorsesWild played their set list of rock and country music first. They played original and cover songs. Later in the day, Pete & Dean Trio performed covers of classic rock, country, and pop songs on the St. Paddy’s Day street stage.

Finally, The Horny Toads, a Tampa Bay band, finished the street concert with upbeat rock and funk covers. Dedicated partiers boogied to songs like “Kiss” by Prince and “Fight For Your Right” by Beastie Boys.

O’Maddy’s had multiple pop-up bars in the street for quick, grab-and-go drinks. An O’Maddy’s merchandise booth had buckets of shirts with its logo and a St. Patrick’s Day 2024 graphic. O’Maddy’s propped a giant blowup leprechaun, multiple blow-up rainbows with shamrocks saying “Happy St. Patrick’s Day”, and themed photo stand-ins around the venue.

St. Patrick’s Day in Gulfport

Other Gulfport establishments also held holiday parties. Hurricane Eddies had a live entertainment lineup with performers such as Down N Dirty Rocks and The Fulcos. The North End Taphouse had a special St. Patrick’s Day menu with Irish stew, Scotch eggs, bread pudding and colcannon, and mashed potatoes with green onions and bacon. Of course, the Taphouse served green beer and had live music, too.
