From Trash to Transformation

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, approximately 8 million metric tons of plastic have found their way into the world’s oceans since 2010. Some of it remains in massive floating patches, such as the spectacular Great Pacific Garbage vortex. But the real extent of the problem is hard to visualize, because much of the stray plastic sinks into the water column or degrades into tiny microplastics. We now find these microplastics in fish, drinking water, and, yes, even table salt.

Artists at Eckerd College’s recent Used Once, Lasts Forever art show shared their visions of the plastic crisis earlier this month. Twenty-five 2-D, 3-D, electronic, and musical submissions spoke to — and were in many cases crafted from — single-use plastics.

Below the Surface

Eckerd College sophomore Yarrow Bercovici-biotti used cardboard and plastic waste to craft her contribution to the Used Once, Lasts Forever art show. She hopes to inspire others to make their own creative expressions about the plastic crisis.

Sophomore Yarrow Bercovici-biotti, majoring in Environmental Studies, used cardboard, plastic packaging, and paint to capture the sleek forms of three sharks. Her work was inspired by a recent study abroad trip she took to Honduras – where she had the opportunity to dive with these extraordinary predators – and a video she found of people crafting 3-D fish. By carefully slashing the sides of her sharks, she revealed a

tangle of plastic waste inside – a reminder that that plastic problem is more than skin deep.

“I wanted to inspire others with creative ways to reuse plastics,”

Out of the Park Updates from the April 16 Gulfport City Council Meeting

At the April 16 Gulfport City Council meeting, Council discussed everything from Little League, to new rules and policies for council meetings.

Little League

On March 17, O’Maddy’s Bar and Grille held its annual St. Patrick’s Day party. During this party, they raised $5,000 for Gulfport Little League.

“We couldn’t do it without you,” Trevor Mallory, the head of Gulfport Little League, said. “It’s good for people to see two people who don’t look alike but come together for a good cause. Baseball was my out in my community. I was fortunate enough to get drafted out of high school by the Blue Jays. The best way I could give back to my community was to start a little league organization.”

Mallory spoke about how important baseball was to him growing up, and how it’s important for many kids.

“In those times, a lot of African-American kids didn’t have the ability to even go to college or anything. I had the ability to go pro right out of high school,” said Mallory. “That was my pathway to a successful future. A lot of kids struggle in school and struggle to get along. Baseball kept me away from a lot of the negative things that kids struggle with. This is how I give back. I want to give these kids the opportunity to have their out or their pathway to success.”

Mallory gave a special thank you to City Manager Jim O’Reilly, who coached Mallory as a kid.

Newspaper Donations

Cathy Salustri-Loper, the co-owner and publisher of  The Gabber Newspaper was next to speak. She came to discuss an item on the consent agenda that involves The Gabber Newspaper  donating their

archives to the Gulfport History Museum. The goal is to keep them safe, and have them digitized for the community to access, use, and learn from.

Proclamations

The City made three proclamations. The first designates Public Works week as May 19-25. Kendrix Anderson, the Public Works Superintendent stood up to thank the public works staff, and take a photo with the mayor.

The second proclamation of the night was for National Safe Boating week. Howard Bush, the Flotilla Commander for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 716, accepted the proclamation. He thanked the council and the City for their continued support of the Coast Guard. Safe Boating week is May 18-24.

The final proclamation of the night designated Purple Up Day. This day celebrates the children of military parents, and the sacrifice they make along with their parents. Purple Up Day was April 15.

Ordinances and Resolutions

Council passed two ordinances and two resolutions.

Ordinance 2024-02  cleared up privacy expectations for City-

owned property. While on non-public City property, citizens cannot record employees. The ordinance lists 13 rules that constitute being removed from the area. This only enforces indoor areas. Non-public city property means areas such as employee offices. Limited public areas are places such as the police office lobby

Ordinance 2024-03  discusses people sleeping on public property overnight. Florida passed a law that goes into effect on Oct. 1 that will force municipalities to restrict overnight public sleeping. Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., people aren’t allowed to sleep on public property. This doesn’t account for legally parked and registered vehicles.

Police Chief Rob Vincent spoke about how the goal isn’t to arrest people, but get them help.

Both ordinances passed unanimously, but the council decided to push the second reading for the second ordinance until it is closer to Oct. 1.

Resolution 2024-20 sets a plan to bring sidewalks across the city up to ADA code. This means putting ramps at the ends of sidewalks for all people to use. The City believes they can repair half of the zone with the $150,000 budget.

Resolution 2024-21  looks at rules and policies for City Council. To learn more, read page 8.

Thanos Cleared Updates on April Thanos’ Emails

During the 2024 Gulfport City Council Ward I election, many concerns about both candidates came into question. One of the main concerns to do with April Thanos was emails she sent. The issue came about as Thanos sent emails using her City email in regards to her campaign.

After this came to light, former Ward I Council member Dan Liedtke, who lost the seat to Thanos in 2020, filed an ethics complaint with the Florida Elections commission (FEC). Liedtke alleged these emails went against the FEC’s code, and thus warranted action.

FEC Response

On March 25, Liedtke received a response. Thanos provided The Gabber Newspaper with a copy of the response from the FEC, which included the reasons for the agency’s ruling. FEC reviewed the complaints and added their thoughts, along with excerpts from conversations with Thanos.

“In response to the allegations, Respondent (Thanos) stated the following: ‘The email to Lauren had been a long email chain about the city parks and their safety for children. I thought I had moved her email address to my personal account, but made the mistake of sending this request from my city email. In the second email to/ from Steve, it again was a long email chain about doing a tree inventory with which he was helping. I cannot

control that he asked for a sign, but shouldn’t have responded to him from this account. These were both clerical mistakes that anyone could have made. I am being much more careful to ensure this doesn’t happen’.”

Along with this, the law specifies that these actions are violations if they occur during working hours. The letter says that all but one of the emails were not sent during working hours, but either in the evening or weekend.

Code Enforcement Email

Liedtke also brought up emails from Thanos to a Gulfport code enforcement officer, saying she

directed officers to assist with the removal of her opponents campaign signs.

“Neither Respondent’s campaign nor her opponent is mentioned in any of the emails. Complainant’s assertion that Respondent directed a code enforcement officer to remover her opponents signs to further her candidacy appears to be based upon speculation,” the FEC wrote in its response, continuing:

“The complaint fails to provide evidence based upon personal information or information other than hearsay that Respondent violated Section 106.15(3), F.S. For these reasons, I find the complaint to be Legally Insufficient.”

Almond Joy and Bad Manners

Overheard: April 16 Gulfport City Council

“How do you feel about chocolate and coconut?” —Council member Ian O’Hara (Ward IV), asking an audience member after eating an Almond Joy prior to the meeting

“This isn’t just the first check from O’Maddy’s; this is the third check. And they all look like this.” —Trevor Mallory, pointing at the amount on the check donated by O’Maddy’s to Gulfport Little League

“You can come up and ask a question if you like.” —Mayor Sam Henderson, talking to a woman in the crowd

“No, I just did.” —The woman, who refused to step up to the podium, instead yelling her public comment from the back of the crowd. This particular woman expressed her feelings vocally throughout the meeting, from the back of Council chambers

“Like the recent council elections here in Gulfport, my race is equally as nonpartisan and equally as non-controversial as that was.”

U.S. Congressional Candidate John Liccione, introducing himself to the council

“People are asking to show each other respect, and then we can’t even have a conversation without everyone going peanut gallery and laughing because of us trying to do the job. You’ll have to forgive

If everybody can’t stop and let us have the discussion then we’ll adjourn the meeting and we’ll come back and we’ll talk about it in an hour. And

if we can’t do it then we’ll come back about it in another hour. Can we do what basic fifth graders do and sit down and follow the rules and show each other a minimum of respect?” — Mayor Sam Henderson, after slamming his gavel in response to audience members at the back of the crowd continually speaking up and laughing

Going Over the Rays/Hines Deal

Ongoing debates over the RaysHines Deal continue as the St. Petersburg City Council members analyze the Community Benefits Agreements (CBA) and the other draft agreements. The community is split between supporting the deal and rejecting it.

The Rays/Hines partnership looks to break ground later this year on the new Tampa Bay Rays

ballpark, set to open in the fall of 2027 to have the first game in 2028.

Community Benefits Agreement Draft Term Sheet

San Pedro Gazette submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain copies of the agreements being reviewed.

The Gazette also documented the Community Benefits Advisory Council (CBAC), which served to inform this article.

The CBA was first detailed in the Community Benefits Impact Report for the Historic Gas Plant District Development, presented at the Jan. 9, 2024, CBAC meeting.

The Community Benefits Agreement Draft Term Sheet includes the agreements and motions recommended by the CBAC to improve the deal. While the CBAC approved this draft term sheet, two committee members voted against the outlined benefits.

Currently Reviewing

The City is currently reviewing the CBA Draft Term Sheet, along with the New Stadium Project Agreement and the Historic Gas Plant District Term Sheet.

Currently, the deal shows $287 million provided by the City of St. Petersburg, as well as $312.5 million by Pinellas County.

According to a Committee of the Whole presentation from October 2023, Mayor Ken Welch’s administration, and representatives of the Rays/Hines proposal, the deal will cost at least $1.3 billion, close to half of which will come from taxes.

According to the project’s website, the overall project demands a “total construction investment” of more than $6 billion, with most paid by private parties.

During the Committee of the Whole presentation, City represen-

• Outreach: Restorative Conversa-

tion ($750,000)

• Employment: Restorative Enterprise ($10.5 million)

• Employment: Restorative Talent Pipeline ($6.25 million)

New Rules and Policies for Council Meetings

In recent Gulfport City Council meetings, rules and policies, specifically those looking at decorum, have come up. At the April 2 meeting, they looked at the current rules, and discussed changes they have.

Recently reelected Council member April Thanos (Ward I), along with Gulfportians, brought up some changes she suggested. This included topics such as moving when the public can comment on items of business, and how council members can put items on the agenda.

At the meeting, they voted on those changes.

Discussing Rules and Policies

While the changes came up at the previous meeting, there still was some discussion at the April 16 meeting. After reading Resolution 2024-21, Mayor Sam Henderson went through the proposed changes to Gulfport City Council’s rules and policies. The first was a rule encouraging council members to report back to the City after they go to meetings or events outside of Gulfport. The second looked at the order in which things get discussed, with public comment mov-

ing after the council discusses the item. The third change, which received the most comments, is one that would set City Attorney Andrew Salzman as the council’s parliamentarian.

Vice Mayor Ian O’Hara (Ward IV) had issues with the changes.

“I really think we should look at each of these separately, because I cannot support the whole thing,” said O’Hara.

When they talked about the first two changes, there were no issues. The third brought up some more discussion.

8 thegabber.com | April 25, 2024 - May 1, 2024

Parliamentarian

At the April 2 meeting, Thanos broached the idea of designating a parliamentarian for the meetings. This position would allow the City Attorney to bring up points of order and maintain decorum from the council during the meetings. This discussion came before the Mayor’s statement at the end of that meeting.

At the April 16 meeting, two city council members disagreed with this idea. Christine Brown (Ward II) talked about the importance of the Chair of the meeting, and how they are head of the discussion. O’Hara also disagreed with the position.

“I disagree because there’s instances where the chair is the person who is violating the rules,” said Paul Ray (Ward III). “I like the ability for an extra authority. The chair still has its own power to be able to say if a member of the audience is pointing out somebody specific where they’re not supposed to. They’re supposed to be speaking to the whole of council, then the chair has the authority to do that. At the same time, if the chair is out of control or whatever, then the parliamentarian can step in. I think it’s a good failsafe.”

Thanos agreed with Ray. The Mayor asked for a consensus, and the change was struck down 3-2, with Ray and Thanos voting to keep it.

LPublic Opinion

After the council had their chance to discuss, the audience gave their ideas. Lenny Guckenheimer brought up how it’s important to remember the passion and emotion involved with the job, and how they can impact the council members. Guckenheimer also brought up a part of Gulfport City Council’s rules and policies. Section N, item 3 states, “Council members shall refrain from making statements that promote the election or defeat of a candidate or candidates for public office.” He brought this up, and asked if it applied to the council members

and mayor outside of the council.

The mayor and City Attorney Andy Salzman clarified that it did not apply.

After this, members of the public stood up to discuss why they wanted a parliamentarian. Caron Schwartz said she thought it was common for organizations and governments to have a parliamentarian. She also said she believed that meant  the chair still would hold the power, and the parliamentarian simply keeps order and decorum. Bonnie Sklaren agreed with this, saying she thought that sometimes it could be difficult to calm down discussions and that parliamentarian would make this easier.

Kimberly Mikaliunas echoed this, saying that the council already practices this. The parliamentarian would only be there to bring up if the council violated a rule.

Florida’s Updated Balloon Release Bill

The first balloon was invented in 1824. 200 years later, they’re still fun for the whole family — but not for turtles or the environment. When someone releases a balloon, purposefully or accidentally, the balloon (or balloons) fly into the air, pop, and come back down to to the ground — or the water. The rubber used to make the balloon makes its way into the environment where it lands.  This problem is especially bad in Florida, as these balloons often make their way into the water. To combat this, Florida District 61 Representative Linda Chaney introduced House Bill 321, looking at the release of balloons.

What Does the Bill Prevent?

In Florida, balloon release is already prohibited under statute 379.233. This law states that, “It is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to intentionally release, organize the release, or intentionally cause to be released within a 24-hour period 10 or more balloons inflated with a gas that is lighter than air...” The law allows exemptions for balloons that are biodegradable or photodegradable.

This new bill makes things more strict. HB 321 reads, “Revising a prohibition on the release of certain balloons to delete a specified timeframe and number of balloons; deleting an exemption from such prohibition for certain biodegradable or photodegradable balloons; providing that a person who violates the prohibition

commits the noncriminal infraction of littering.”

Beaches Involvement

The Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber TBBC supported the bill as it came about.

“The intent is to prohibit the intentional release of balloons,” said Robin Miller, the president and CEO of TBBC. “When they go up, they have to come back down. It impacts marine life, but also farming.”

The bill goes into effect on July 1, but according to Miller, the Tradewinds resort is ahead of the pack. They’ve begun prohibiting balloon release, and put together an Earth Day celebration to discuss the environmental impacts of balloons on April 21.

Balloon Consequences

According to a study done at the

University of Michigan, the consequences of balloon release go beyond pollution (although that is a major issue too). According to the study, “While many people are trying to reduce their use of single-use plastic bags, bottles, utensils and straws, balloons are often overlooked.” This oversight means that balloons are still common at many events.

The study talks more about how the common types of balloons are either not biodegradable, or take a very long time to start degrading. When they land, wildlife, pets, and livestock can eat them, get tangled in the strings, or get scared by the falling scraps. According to the study, “latex balloons are the deadliest form of marine debris for seabirds. They are 32 times more likely to kill than hard plastics when ingested. Balloons tied with ribbons and strings also rank just behind discarded fishing gear and plastic bags and utensils due to the high risk of entanglement and death that they pose to marine life.”

In addition, sea turtles often mistake floating balloons for jellyfish, one of their main food sources, and eat them. These ingested balloons often cause compactions and lead to sea turtles starving to death, the Turtle Hospital explains.

Although the bill doesn’t make releasing balloons a criminal charge, people who break the law can receive a $250 fine.

There’s No Planet B TradeWinds’ Ecotourism Additions Educates Visitors

St. Pete Beach’s TradeWinds Island Resort partnered with Tampa Bay nonprofit groups for eco-conscious events and improvements.

The resort plans to add “ecotourism offerings” such as interactive wildlife programs and a mock sea turtle nest display. These eco enhancements will be year-round additions to the resort, according to the TradeWinds Island Resort’s press release.

Ecotourism Additions

The TradeWinds’ ecotourism additions include four partnerships and initiatives. First, the resort will no longer allow planned balloon releases from the property in support of the House Bill 321, the Balloon Release Bill. Along with this new policy, displays of real balloons will be on the property with a list of reasons for the bill and conservation effort.

Second, TradeWinds’ RumFish Grill partnered with Tampa Bay Watch to conduct a “Shells for Shorelines” program. RumFish Grill will “collect oyster shells to help create Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOG) or shell bags for Tampa Bay Watch,” according to the press release.

The RumFish Beach Resort and the Alligator & Wildlife Discovery Center will also introduce an animal interaction program. Twice a week, guests can learn about animals such as alligators and Komodo dragons.

Lastly, the TradeWinds partnered with the Sea Turtle Trackers to add

TradeWinds’ ecotourism additions educates visitors through informative displays of balloons, sea turtle nests, and wildlife programs.

the mock sea turtle nest display. This mock display will be on the beach behind the Island Grand. The importance of keeping the beach clean is the design’s overall intent. The area includes a donation box and information about sea turtles.

“Ecotourism has always been a priority for us at TradeWinds, as seen in our long-running programs such as the Swim with the Fishes tank experience, the Touch Tank program, and extensive educational signage throughout the property,” said Managing Director of TradeWinds Island Resorts Avi Yesawich.

Ecotourism and Earth Day

TradeWinds’ and Tampa Bay Watch hosted an Earth Day event on April 21. It featured a seminar

on how to build a vertical oyster garden. Also, The Florida Aquarium and Keep Pinellas Beautiful led a beach cleanup. Groups provided all cleaning equipment, such as buckets and trash pickers.

According to the press release, “all donated VOGs will be distributed to local dock owners in the community to help naturally filter the Tampa Bay waters, as well as provide food and habitat to marine life.”

“We’re celebrating this ongoing commitment with our Earth Day event and by introducing these exciting new interactive offerings for the community and our guests,” said Yesawich.

GMC Selects 2024 Gecko World Grant Recipients

Every year, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber (GMC) awards three organizations a Gecko World Grant. This year, the Gecko World Grant recipients are REACH Food Program for Kids, Selah Freedom, and the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund.

How the Gecko World Grant Works

Organizations must be nonprofits in the City of Gulfport, or work with programs benefiting the Gulfport community. The organizations must also be under Section 501(c) (3), (4), (6) or (19) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Applicants had until March 14 to submit information. The GMC Board of Directors reviewed and made funding decisions within 90 days after the submissions. On April 15, the GMC notified these select organizations.

After Gecko World – which includes GeckoFest, Gecko Ball, and Gecko Crawl – the GMC will total how much each organization receives. Later, the organizations receive the Gecko World Grant checks at a recognition event in

December, according to a press release from the GMC.

In past years, Gecko World Grant winners include SunFlower School, Sea Turtle Trackers, and St. Vincent

DePaul CARES.

The GMC said the Gecko World Grant empowers and uplifts local groups “dedicated to enriching the Gulfport area.”

“As Gulfport continues to thrive as a hub of creativity, culture, and community spirit, the Gecko World Grant 2024 represents a vital opportunity for local organizations to receive support and recognition for their impactful endeavors,” the GMC stated in a press release.

2024 Gecko World Grant Winners

Nancy Earley, the GMC’s treasurer, led the grant’s selection process. She said leading the grant effort with dedication made “this a deeply satisfying and rewarding part of our Chamber’s year.” She said they all are thrilled for the selected winners.

REACH Food Program for Kids

REACH Food Programs for Kids provides children in need with meals and personal hygiene products in Florida, Indiana, and Kentucky.

According to the program’s website, Tracy Patton Ministries founded the program in May 2015.

“While visiting an elementary school in Indiana, Tracy learned that many families have a difficult time feeding their children,” the REACH website said. “Tracy immediately took action, and opened the REACH! food program for children and their families.”

REACH Food Programs for Kids officially became a nonprofit organization in 2017. The program delivers food and products to the children and families. REACH also helps schools with school supplies, snacks, clothes, hygiene items, and extra food children can take home on the weekends and during school vacation breaks.

The GMC said REACH aids 13 schools in Pinellas County. The Gecko World Grant will directly benefit the children’s needs.

REACH has locations for donations and financial gifts, which are tax-deductible. Slyce in Madeira Beach (662 150th Ave.) accepts food donations and personal hygiene items for REACH Food Programs for Kids.

Madeira Beach’s Slyce will host a food drive for REACH Food Programs for Kids on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The restaurant requests donors to drop off food, hygiene products, and household supplies. All the donated items will go to children, families, and schools in Pinellas County.

Selah Freedom

Selah Freedom is an anti-human trafficking nonprofit organization based in Florida as well as parts of the midwest region. Its mission is “to end sex trafficking and bring freedom to the exploited through five strong programs: Awareness, Prevention, Outreach, Residential, and Consulting.”

Selah Freedom has restoration

programs for survivors. The organization also welcomes program graduates to join as staff members

such as advocate volunteers or program coordinators.

The GMC said the Gecko World Grant will fund the Awareness-Prevention Training. According to the GMC, the cost of training at one school in the Gulfport district is $2,500.

“There is no cost to the school for Awareness-Prevention. There are a total number of three public schools, two private schools, and a post-secondary school in Gulfport,” said the GMC. “Because one child sexually assaulted and/or trafficked is too many, it is imperative to have awareness and prevention lessons in our schools.”

Sonia Plotnick Health Fund

Sonia Plotnick Health Fund (SPHF) promotes the wellness of Tampa Bay women. The fund’s

website states it “provides financial assistance for healthcare costs, the education of lesbians studying in a healthcare field, and health-related continuing education opportunities for women.”

SPHF is a Gulfport nonprofit and an all-volunteer organization. For more than 25 years and counting, SPHF continues to provide services in Florida counties such as Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, and Sarasota.

“100% of our net proceeds are available to be given back to women in our community,” the SPHF website states. “We minimize expenses so that our funds are available to as many women as possible.”

In 2022, the GMC’s Women on The Rise – Watch us Soar event raised money for the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund. The GMC, the Brenda McMahon Art Gallery and artists, and other Gulfport women-owned businesses donated a total of $1,951 to the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund.

Hooray for Nollywood

The Latest Production of Nollywood Dreams at freeFall

To dream is universal. That’s the message of Nollywood Dreams at freeFall, playing through May 12 at the west St. Pete theater. When I saw the show’s description, I wondered if the creative team at freeFall chose the show because of underlying themes of globalism, race, or diversity.

Nope. This is a singularly charming, light and easy, delightful script, made all the more stupendous by an unparalleled cast. Throughout the 100-minute play Saturday night (no intermission), I couldn’t find a flaw; Nollywood Dreams at freeFall is another unparalleled show of excellence audiences have come to expect from this west-side theater.

Joyce Bioh’s script — billed, not inaccurately, as a “laugh-out-loud romantic comedy” — invites the audience into a small Nigerian travel agency, run by two sisters. One — Ayamma Okafor, played superbly by Fahnlohnee Reeves (who was born in Liberia, which, while not a near neighbor, is also on the western coast of Africa)— has ambitions of breaking into Nollywood.

Wait, What is Nollywood?

Nollywood, for the uninitiated (as I was, prior to seeing this show), is the term used for Nigerian cinema, and it’s not new. According to the Nashville Film Institute, it’s “one of Africa’s most lucrative film businesses.” The International Trade Administration reports that the Nigerian film industry is the second largest in the world,  produces more than 2,500 films a year, and, in 2021, generated $2.3 million.

Her Sight’s Set on Nollywood

Ayamma, supported by her sister, Dede (played by the equally effervescent Hillary Scales), gets an audition with Gbenga Ezie (Clinton C.H. Harris manages to pull off “sexy

director” without signaling “creepy casting couch” vibes, which made for an unexpected, pleasurable nuance of character). Ezie’s delight at her performance displeases his girlfriend, also an actress: Fayola Ogunleye. Shelby Ronea remains eminently likable as the jealous — and perhaps a little bit scared of not being the star — Fayola. Rising Nigerian star Wale Owusu (Milton Lyles) and talk-show host Adenikeh (Andresia Moseley) round out the cast, and they, too, developed characters who were a pure joy to watch.

Light and Airy

Throw a small town, golden retriever, and cabin in the woods on stage, and you’d have a Hallmark movie.

ca Sutherlin. Eric Davis’ two-level set incorporates two video walls, a cathode ray tube monitor (yes, children, that’s what computers used to look like), and an oldschool TV. It’s technological whiplash, and, like everything about this show, fun.

The show itself is light-hearted. Throw a small town, golden retriever, and cabin in the woods on stage, and you’d have a Hallmark movie. There are a few nods to American ignorance about Nigeria. “Africa is a country to them,” Dede remarks after explaining to a caller that no, they didn’t offer tours of the Serengeti because the Serengeti wasn’t in Nigeria (it’s on the eastern side of the continent and farther south).

Don’t go expecting grand themes about colonialism and race; this is a fun show, carefully directed by Eri-

As my husband said as we left the theater, it was easy. And, with no disrespect to the storied August Wilson, perhaps shows such as these hold the key to nibbling away at the hatred and racism that’s ever-encroaching on our lives. Nollywood Dreams shows a different culture — one with whom, I would wager, most Tampa Bay theater patrons are unfamiliar. And, while the geography, culture, accents (English is the official language of Nigeria), and societies differ, Nollywood Dreams opens a short window of time where we can see dreams are, indeed, universal.

Art Along the Bay

Mainsail Art Festival at Vinoy Park

St. Pete’s Vinoy Park held the 49th annual Mainsail Art Festival. From April 20-21, more than 250 juried artists showcased their best pieces.

Visitors explored various art forms, including ceramics, digital art, glass, jewelry, mixed media, paintings, and photography. Musicians from the Tampa Bay area also performed original and cover songs on an outdoor stage along the park’s sea wall. Food trucks and concession stands resided along the outskirts of the artists’ sections. The festival also included Deanna, the mime as strolling entertainment for visitors.

What is the Mainsail Art Festival?

Founded in 1976, Mainsail Art Festival is a nonprofit organization run entirely by a volunteer committee. It is free to visit.

“Each year, more than 100,000 visitors attend the festival,” the festival’s website reads. “The Mainsail committee of hard-working volunteers produces this annual fine arts festival exhibiting artists competing for $60,000 in prize money.”

Additionally, Sunshine Artist Magazine ranked Mainsail Art Festival as one of the top 14 fine art and design shows in the country.

The festival assigned Katherine Pill as the 2024 show judge. Pill is the senior curator of contemporary art at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg.

Mainsail Art Festival Award Winner

The Best of Mainsail Gold Award went to William Kidd in the ceramics category. The St. Petersburg artist won $10,000.

“It’s quite an honor,” Kidd told The Gabber Newspaper about his win. “This show is full of talented people; it’s a great honor to win.”

According to Kidd’s artist biography, he finds inspiration from cacti, fungi, micro-organisms, sea life, and seeds when sculpting.

St. Pete’s Vinoy Park held the 49th annual Mainsail Art Festival April 20-21, showcasing more than 250 juried artists. Alann Boatright painted superheroes in a public bathroom.

Stephanee Ann

Mainsail has a poster artist each year, which means the festival promotes this artist’s work and information. This year, Stephanee Ann had the opportunity to be Mainsail’s featured poster artist. Ann is from Fort Myers and paints intricately vibrant scenic landscapes or creatures and characters. She described her paintings to be unique.

“This is my own take on impressionism,” Ann said.

She hung paintings on the walls in her booth. One had trees with rainbow-colored leaves and another had a pink flamingo raising its wings while standing in water.

Alann Boatright

Fifteen artists received the award of distinctions. Each artist won $1,000 with the award. Alann Boatright is one of these artists. He won this award in the mixed-media

category. Boatright is a Pinellas Park artist who paints with an industrial influence.

“I paint robots involved in everyday situations that we humans find ourselves in. Working, relaxing, playing…” Boatright wrote on his website.

He told  The Gabber Newspaper that each of his paintings tells a different story. One painting had superheroes in a public bathroom, and the graffiti on the stalls were quotes of newspaper headlines in 2023.

Alex Lanier

Miami artist Alex Lanier was one of the 10 artists who received Mainsail Art Festival’s Award of Excellence. Artists with this award won $1,500 each. Lanier won for the digital category.

He considered himself an “ink and digital mixed-media artist.” Lanier sketches surrealist scenes with an ink pen. He enhances the pic-

ture’s storytelling abilities by adding movement with stop motion animation.

Lanier brought his “boyboy Jr. (Cardboard Box Adventures)” to Mainsail. A little boy wearing snorkeling gear and a blue cape sits in a cardboard box on the bottom bunk of his bunk bed. Additionally, the words “it’s like a jungle” accompanies an eclectic scene of zoo animals, rockets, city skylines, and a ferris wheel on the top bunk.

When asked about the stop motion animation of boyboy Jr’s cape, Lanier said, “it tells more of a story instead of a stand-still.”

Serina Frizzell

Serina Frizzell did not receive any Mainsail Art Festival awards, but she has a special art form. The Mount Dora native is a mixed-media artist who creates portraits using dice. Frizzell’s dice art caught eyes from

a distance leaving attendees unsure of the portraits’ materials until they walk closer. She uses black-andwhite dice where different sides of the dice creates different shades within a gray-scale picture. Frizzell brought her portrait of Salvador Dalí to the St. Pete art fest.

She recently added colorful paint to her dice art portraits. A couple portraits had women’s faces made of dice with painted scenic images in the circular sunglasses. She said she sketches the idea first then adds the black and white dice.

“It feels almost like paint-by-numbers after I figured out the picture I want to make,” Frizzell said.

Plastic continued from cover

said Beccoulci-biotti. “And I think art makes the plastic problem accessible. It creates a larger audience.”

Sara Hopkins, a first-year student in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing, agreed. Her papier-mache pelican sculpture offered two views on the iconic Florida bird. On one side, her pelican sported his elegant brown-and-white breeding plumage. But turn him around, and a recessed stomach cavity revealed a belly full of plastic waste – an all-too-unfortunate reality for many Florida seabirds.

“Maybe we don’t see the plastic,” Hopkins explained, “but it’s still there.”

A New Tradition

This marks the second year Eckerd’s Reduce Single Use initiative, which aims to curb single-use plastics on campus, sponsored an art show. (The first exhibit took place in 2019.) This year’s show kicked off an Earth Week celebration that also included a campus clean up and a native wetland planting. At the close of the week, a plastic-free ice cream social will mark the first birthday of Remora, the campaign’s single-use plastic tracking app.

Dr. Amy Siuda, one of the two Marine Science professors leading the Reduce Single Use campaign, said they plan to make the show a yearly tradition.

“These initiatives are starting to

have a real impact,” she told the assembled crowd.

“This show is witness to the fact that reuse and recycling can be implemented in practical and artistic ways,” Eckerd President Dr. Jim Annarelli agreed.

Their remarks concluded with the musical premier of “Seashells.” The duet, co-written by junior Biology and Music major Lana Guy and firstyear Marine Science and Music major Taj Sorensen, featured the paired perspectives of a young child and a scientist contemplating the crisis of the world’s oceans.

A soaring, impassioned chorus powerfully rang out: “Open your eyes!”

A Proof to Culture

Among the many large and impressive works hangs a delicate treasure: first year Marine Science major Milena Lynch’s “Jellies: Or So the Turtles Think.” This intricate mobile featured a dozen turquoise jellyfish. She carefully crafted them from plastic water bottles she found on campus. She shaped the bottles by melting them with a candle. Smiling, she admitted she’d had to practice a few times before getting the melt just right. She then arranged her creations to drift around one another, mimicking their natural position in the water column.

The floating sculpture dramatized sea turtles’ deadly habit of accidentally consuming drifting plastics, mistaking them for jellyfish. This dramatic presentation, Lynch said, would  frame the problem in an urgent light.

“Words can only say so much, but art gives you a different way to look at it,” she said.

What’s more, she argued, referencing an idea she learned about in her Arts Activism and the Climate course this semester:

“The art we make can be a proof to culture. How else will people in the future know what we were thinking and feeling? How else will they know what was going on?”

Tiki Drinks and Chinese Food

Zom Hee: Seminole’s Hidden Gem

In college, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to China, twice. It’s a fascinating country that’s laced with ancient history and bustling with action. From the Peking Duck in Beijing, to the World Expo in Shanghai, to the gardens in rural parts of the country, there’s no shortage of culture that will inevitably blow your mind.

But the food is nothing like what we portray here in America. For the most part, American Chinese food is an abomination compared to the real deal. But even the American rendition will cure my strongest cravings. Zom Hee Chinese Restaurant in Seminole is one of those restaurants. Disguised in a strip mall, it’s a hidden gem that serves up a vibe as killer as its food.

Lunch Specials

Is Zom Hee authentic like what they eat in China? No. But it’s damn delicious. Step inside and you feel as though you’re transported back to the 1950s with cloth wallpaper, vintage glasses, and paper placemats dotted Chinese Zodiac signs. My server offered a complimentary pot of hot tea and I immediately felt like I was back in China. Lunch specials at Zom Hee range from $12.95-$14.95 and come as a combo with an egg roll, fried rice and choice of soup. I opted for the Szechuan chicken ($13.50) in a spicy brown sauce. It came out piping hot with rich, umami flavor. The fried rice was a bit lackluster but the egg roll was stuffed with bits of pork and shrimp and fried to perfection.

I also ordered the General Tao’s tofu ($16.50) extra spicy. Chunks of crispy tempura-battered tofu arrived smothered in a spicy, chili-infused sauce. The broccoli was fresh and the white rice was fluffy. I know most people don’t order tofu when dining out for Chinese,

but Zom Hee makes some great tofu-forward dishes like the Salt & Pepper Tofu ($16.50) and Tofu with Black Bean Sauce ($15.95). Don’t worry, the American classics like Sesame Chicken, Mu Shu Pork, and Peppered Beef are all available along with traditional Chow Mein, Chop Suey, and Egg Foo Young.

Vintage Tiki Bar

One of the coolest parts of Zom Hee is the lounge. The cozy lounge not only offers a full liquor bar with beer and wine but they feature Tiki cocktails served in vintage Tiki glasses. If you’re there for drinks, have your bartender mix a St. Petersburg Sling or tropical Mai Tai.

Next time I go back, I’m ordering the Confucius Itch made with gin, aloe, and passion fruit juice. And the Tiki drinks cost less than $8. The cocktail list also features retro bevies like the Grasshopper, Side Car, Harvey Wallbanger, and Gin Rickey.

The only downside of Zom Hee is that they don’t deliver, and they’re unavailable on any third party affiliate like UberEats or GrubHub. You have to trek to Seminole to dine or for takeout in order to get your Chinese food fix — but it’s totally worth it.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of difficult cases, of things almost despaired of, Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Intercede with God for me that He bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, and that I may praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor granted me by God and to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.
