Shore Thing
By Amanda Hagood
No mistake about it – summer’s coming! And while the soaring thermometer will send many Tampa Bay residents to the seaside, we aren’t the only ones who are hitting the beach. Summer is nesting season for many imperiled bird species, including black skimmers, least terns, and American oystercatchers.
Amazing Avians
Even if you’re no birder, you will likely recognize these distinctive species. Skimmers sport an outsized, red and black bill with which they “skim” along the water’s surface, hunting for fish. Oystercatchers don’t skim so much as poke, using their long, narrow bill to probe the shoreline for tasty invertebrates. And though they may be the smallest of the tern family, least terns put on quite a show with their acrobatic hover-plunge-splash fishing technique.
These beach-nesting species lay their eggs directly on the sand at local shores. Once the chicks hatch, adults – typically both parents — will tend their young anywhere from a
few weeks to a few months. Just like your favorite backyard birds, these careful caregivers must teach their little ones to fly.
“Sometimes it can be tricky
for seabirds,” notes Holley Short, Audubon Florida’s Tampa Bay Area Shorebird Program Manager. “They have to not only learn how to fly, but also learn how to fish on the wing!”

The recent opinion piece “Shared, Safe Access…” has its heart in the right place, but is incorrect and misleading in its description of the former language that used to be in BCYC’s articles of incorporation, which were written in 1940. As of 2018, we at the club were unaware of the contents of the previous form of this document, which only copy was in a file drawer in Tallahassee.
In 2019 I was the club’s parliamentarian and early that year ordered my own copy of the articles, saw the outdated language (from almost 80 years before), formed a special committee of club members, and after a lengthy process we had, by the end of that same year, revised articles of incorporation with the inclusive language we all believe in. It is very forward looking and contemporary. What the letter writer saw is now a thing of the past, and that is exactly where it will always be.
Incidentally, the route from BCYC to the marina bathrooms is a threefour minute walk through mostly parking lots—it is not along an “ac-
tive road,” nor is it 1.5 miles! –Dan Chesnut, Gulfport
Save the Tree
I so appreciate the letter that Alexandra Morgan Geiger wrote. The tree across from 2816 52nd St. S. needs many people to realize what the city will lose with the tree gone. It is truly a magnificent tree. I would like to suggest that Winway Homes and the City of Gulfport enter into negotiations to have the City buy the property at a reasonable cost to the City.
The City can then designate the property as a park and thus the tree is safe from removal – as long as it remains healthy. The City could place a couple of benches under the tree and thus people could sit and enjoy all that the tree offers each day. It would be wonderful to have Winway recognize that this particular tree is more than just ordinary. It would create goodwill on the part of Winway to sell/donate the property to the City so that many more generations of Gulfportians will be able to see and enjoy this tree and the peacefulness it provides. I would
REMEMBER: Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
also suggest that perhaps the new park be named for the person who first recognized the significance of protecting the tree and bought the lot many, many years ago in order to ensure the tree would be saved.
My continued thanks to all who understand and support saving the tree. —Susan Barrs Duval, Gulfport

RV Rules for Gulfport Council Passes First Reading of New RV Ordinance
By Monroe Roark
The Gulfport City Council took the first step toward providing new rules for RV owners.
Council voted at its April 18 meeting to pass the first reading of an updated ordinance. Council previously addressed the issue at the Feb. 21 meeting.
“I think this is honestly the best compromise we are going to find,” said Mayor Sam Henderson. “I think this is the best way we are going to get anywhere close to giving anybody any satisfaction in both worlds [on both sides of the issue].”
Officials noted in prior discussions that the ordinance in place for the past decade made it difficult, if not impossible, for RV owners to meet setback requirements.
That ordinance did not allow storage in the front yard of residential properties. Setbacks are 6 feet for the side yard and 15 feet for the rear yard.
“These setbacks make it difficult to legally locate an RV on most lots within the city,” a City staff report, included with the agenda, explained.
The amended ordinance prohibits
RV parking in front of any structure. They cannot be located in any rightof-way or on public property.
Owners can park RVs in side and rear yards as long as they maintain a three-foot setback from “any residential and/or legally habitable structure,” according to the City. Fire protection officials stressed the need for that rule as a safety feature.
Class B RVs are still exempt from the ordinance, as well as any vehicle exemption in place from before the previous ordinance.
“This simplifies what we talked about in the discussions,” said City Manager Jim O’Reilly. “It still prohibits storage in the front yard. It now removes the rear and side setbacks. The only thing left is the 3-foot separation or setback from a legal living unit. The grandfathering still exists, and no parking in public right-ofway.”
During the first round of council discussion on this night, Christine Brown (Ward II) and Ian O’Hara (Ward IV) had no comment.
“I think we’ve pretty much said
everything already,” Paul Ray (Ward III) said. “This is really what I wanted right from the beginning. Something that was doable and equitable for most – not for all, but for most.”
April Thanos (Ward I) emphasized her previous request that the City require existing RVs to show valid licensing and registration.
During public comment, some citizens had specific questions about clarification of the new rules. Another citizen asked about grandfathered vehicles. O’Reilly clarified both areas.
Brown later pointed out Henderson’s previous statement about how no outcome on this issue would make everyone in the city happy.
“I think it’s a great compromise,” she said of the updated ordinance.
Most violations will be recognizable to city employees, or “easy to spot when they’re doing their rounds,” as Henderson put it.
Council will likely vote on the second reading of the new ordinance at the May 2 regular meeting, whose agenda will be posted on the city’s website once it is finalized.

Parking, Comments, and Allergies
Overheard at the April 18 Gulfport City Council Meeting
By Monroe Roark
Downtown Parking
“Parking has to be regulated on Beach and Shore. I’m at my wits’ end. Every time a new business comes in, they have their employees park in front of my place all day and all night … my customers can’t even get to me to pick up their orders when it’s a takeout order. They have to park in the driveway next door or up the street and walk down. There is just no parking anymore. … I’ve been to other towns. Nobody has this free-for-all parking.
“There’s cars that park in front of my place for a week. I’ve had a van there for two weeks, sitting in the same spot. I said something to the police. They said they can’t do anything unless it’s out of registration. There has to be some regulation of parking. If you won’t do that, how about giving me a 15-minute spot, so I can at least let my pickup orders pick up? … The employees of all these businesses are now parking on Beach Boulevard, taking up all the spaces. How are the customers going to get there?” – Byron Chalfont, 10-year Gulfport resident and owner of Siri’s Gourmet Burgers & Pizza
Federal and State Money for Gulfport
“Congresswoman Anna Luna has recommended for our sewer project to be included in a federal appro-
priations bill in the House. Now, of course, it’s an arduous process to get through the House. But she did put our project in. There are also two [state] House bills that are in committee. We hope to get them out of committee and then they will be in the governor’s hands. We’re moving in the right direction with seeking appropriations. The congressional appropriation is over $2 million, and it’s a contribution toward $9.6 million [project overall cost].” – City Manager Jim O’Reilly
Anonymous Public Comments at Meetings
“When people come up [for public comment], I’d really like to have your name and address so I can respond.” –Council member Ian O’Hara (Ward 4)
Scholarships for Local Students
“The Lions Club had a ‘70s dance. We had a great time [and] raised enough money to give four $1,000 scholarships to Bogie students, which is great. We would very much like to give more next year, so be prepared to get your outfits ready and come boogie down.” – Council member Christine Brown (Ward 2)
Gulfport on the Edge
“We will have a full report as soon as we can. There was so much information to go through. There will probably end up being multiple presentations depending on who it’s for. It might be online or a PowerPoint. I’m not sure what form it’s going to take. A bunch of us have to sit down and sort through this to make it into an intelligible thing because there is so much data.” – Council member April Thanos (Ward 1)
Final Thoughts
“I’m going to be brief because my allergies are kicking in, and the only thing I’m allergic to is three-hour meetings.” – Mayor Sam Henderson, closing the marathon meeting

Shore Thing continued from cover
Coastal Squeeze
Changes humans have brought to their nesting grounds have made things even trickier for feathered Floridians. Straying too close to a nest, or allowing young children or dogs to do so, can spook nesting birds. At worst, it may lead them to abandon their nests. Beachfront development, paired with erosion, can shrink the dune and shore habitat these birds require. Some birds have adapted to this “coastal squeeze” by nesting on the gravel rooftops of nearby buildings. Climate change also poses a risk to these species. Sea level rise leads to bigger storm surge, meaning a major weather event can submerge or bury individual nests, even an entire breeding colony.
Be A Good Neighbor
Fortunately, there are many ways we can be better neighbors to shore birds. When you visit the beach, be sure to observe and obey any posted nesting signage, even if you don’t see birds. If birds dive-bomb you, it is likely that there is a nest close by. Move away carefully and give those critters some space! When leaving the beach, throw out or pack out any trash or food remnants — leav-
ing them behind can attract predators who will also prey on eggs and chicks.
In September 2023, new Imperiled Beach-Nesting Birds (IBNB) guidelines developed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will go into effect. These rules will limit activities that could potentially disturb nesting colonies.
“These guidelines will be a huge help in regards with keeping our beach-nesting birds safe,” says Short.
Audubon also offers a unique opportunity for folks interested in doing more to protect these delightful denizens of the shore: becoming a bird steward. Bird stewards volunteer to monitor nesting sites and educate visitors about how to enjoy the beach safely and respectfully around these delicate areas. This is especially important work, considering how many visitors may have no idea what a treasury of unique bird species they can find on Florida beaches.
“Becoming a bird steward is incredibly rewarding,” says Short. “You have a direct impact on making a difference in the survival of a species!”
And those cute, fuzzy chicks you get to observe while stewarding? Short adds: “They’re a real plus.”

Tragedy on the Beach News From Local Police Departments
By Mike Sunnucks
Dangers of Rip Currents
On April 23, a 10-year-old girl and her father drowned in rip currents at Pass-a-Grille Beach.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said Michael Stephens, 42, went to the beach with his daughters, Isabella Stephens (10), Trinity Stephens (13), and Brittany Stephens (20); and his eldest daughter’s boyfriend, Jessie Johnson.
Four of the family members (Jessie, Brittany, Michael, and Isabella) were in the Gulf of Mexico water when they experienced a strong outgoing rip currents.
Johnson helped Brittany out of the water, but Michael and Isabella “were too far from shore,” and the rip currents became too strong, according to a statement from PCSO.
PCSO responded to the popular south Pinellas beach at 6:43 p.m. along St. Pete Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.
An aerial search unit spotted Michael and Isabella Stephens approximately a one-half mile off the Gulf coast at 7:57 p.m.
The search team transported the two to a local hospital. The hospital pronounced them dead shortly after arriving.
Tourist Harasses Women
Earlier this month, Gulfport Police arrested an intoxicated man after he was allegedly “harassing several women at a vacation rental home.” He ran away from and resisted officers.
According to the Gulfport Police Department, Scott Kloempken, 46, of Whitestown, Indiana, faces battery
and resisting arrest charges. The April 15 incident occurred near 31st Street and 54th Avenue South.
GPD said in a statement that the drunk tourist harassed women at a vacation rental home.
“The man did not know the women, and during his interaction, he touched one of them on her leg. The man refused to leave when requested, so police were called to the scene. When officers arrived to investigate, the man tried to run away,” GPD said.
Kloempken resisted GPD officers attempt to handcuff him. The officers used pepper spray to detain the Indiana man.
GPD Sergeant Thomas Woodman said Kloempken was not previously known to local officers.
Arrested Attacker Found Dead in Jail Cell
Just before midnight on April 18, the Pinellas County Jail found an in-
mate dead in his cell.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found a bed sheet covering the door to the cell housing John William Goodwin, 40, of Largo.
“The deputy responded to the cell, pulled down the sheet and found Goodwin hanging from the vent with a ligature made from the sheet,” PCSO released in a statement. “Goodwin pronounced deceased on April 19, 2023, at approximately 12:20 a.m.”
On May 16, 2021, Goodwin allegedly attacked his ex-wife and her boyfriend with two knives. According to PSCO arrest records and court documents, the court charged him with attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault for the alleged altercation.
The knife attack occurred between St. Petersburg and Gulfport city limits, near 46th Street and 25th Avenue South.
St. Petersburg Police arrested Goodwin and held him in the county jail during legal proceedings related to the attack.
On March 29, a Pinellas Circuit Court Judge ordered Goodwin to undergo a mental competency evaluation.
PCSO is currently investigating Goodwin’s death.

Gulfport Board Appointments Remain Mostly the Same
By Monroe Roark
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
That was the attitude of the Gulfport City Council regarding annual board appointments at its April 18 regular meeting. Nearly all appointees returned to office, as council members previously confirmed their satisfaction with each one’s performance and all of the board members’ desire to continue serving.
The mayor and each council member appoints one person to the Board of Adjustment and one to the Planning and Zoning Board/ Local Planning Agency. Three seats on each body were up for reappointment at this time.
Returning to the Board of Adjustment are Kelly Wright (Mayor Sam Henderson), William Oetting (April Thanos, Ward 1), and Joe Szemer (Ian O’Hard, Ward 4).
Back on the Planning and Zoning Board are James Bullington (Henderson), Robert Craig (Christine Brown,
Why veriMED Health Group?
Ward 2), and Josefa Gonzalez-Hastings (O’Hara).
All of the above appointments are for two-year terms which will expire in April 2025.
Council also confirmed some other appointments by consensus.
John McEwen was reappointed to the Employee Pension Board to serve until April 2026. Larry Tosi., returns to the Police Pension Board to serve until May 2027.
Enid Mirkin was appointed to the Senior Citizens’ Advisory Committee for a term that expires in July 2024.
Council also had to make a decision regarding its representative on the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council. Former Ward IV council member Michael Fridovich served there until he lost his re-election bid in March.
O’Hara, who defeated Fridovich in that election, will fill the seat on the Planning Council.

Public Information, Please Treasure Island Launches New Records Request Portal
By Mike Sunnucks
The City of Treasure Island contracts with a Tallahassee-based software firm to provide a new online portal for public records requests. The City announced April 13 it launched a new public records service with JustFOIA Inc.
JustFOIA is a Florida-based company specializing with Freedom of Information Act requests.
The company states it’s a “GovTech company providing the easiest-to-use records request management software to agencies nationwide.”
Treasure Island pays JustFOIA under $9,500 for a one-year deal, according to Public Information Officer Jason Beisel.
The service allows public record requests in Treasure Island to be submitted via an online form — mytreasureisland.justfoia.com
In a release, City Manager Amy Davis said, “Treasure Island chose JustFOIA to help streamline our citizens’ open records request process and improve efficiencies within.”
The Florida technology firm’s clients include the cities of Kissimmee, Fort Walton Beach, Ocala, and Palm Beach Gardens. Other clients outside of Florida include police departments in Bakersfield, California, Brookhaven, Georgia, and the city government of Peoria, Illinois.
President and CEO of JustFOIA Donny Barstow said the impact the records management firm makes is impressive.
“JustFOIA is ecstatic to work with the City of Treasure Island and empower them to implement a solution to this often challenging process. We are fanatical about our clients’ success,” Barstow said.

Spirited Farewell Bailey, Liggins Tapped for Spirit of Gulfport
By Monroe Roark
Gulfport officials presented the Spirit of Gulfport Award to Brian Liggins and Phillip Bailey at the start of the Gulfport City Council’s April 18 meeting.
Mayor Sam Henderson praised the duo’s selection and thanked Vice Mayor Paul Ray for the suggestion.
“We give the Spirit of Gulfport
Award to those Gulfportians who go above and beyond, out of their way to be kind and a positive part of the city that we live in,” said Henderson. “These two gentlemen exemplify that beyond all doubt. I’ve been lucky enough to have them as my neighbors and know them through my time in the restaurant industry.” Bailey spoke on behalf of the pair,
with Liggins standing by his side. Bailey began by saluting the late Fawn Bailey, who he said convinced them to move to town and then insisted that they get involved in the community. The move changed their lives for the better, he added.
“You have made our lives so rich and so full. We have found happiness and contentment and peace here in this great town,” said Bailey to the audience. “We love Gulfport so much, and it’s because all of you live here. Because all of you have made Gulfport what it is. You made it easy for us to be here and be part of this community. We love this place so much. It’s always going to be part of our hearts and souls.”
In closing his remarks, Bailey suggested that the duo would soon make a regular seasonal departure and would return later in the year.
“We’ll always be back, so be ready,” he said. “We’ll be in vacation mode the next time you see us.”

Elementary a School of Excellence Some Open Student Slots for 2023-2024
By Monroe Roark
Magnet Schools of America named Gulfport Montessori Elementary School a School of Excellence for 2023. School officials announced this milestone in late March.
Magnet Schools of America is a national organization of which Pinellas County Schools is a member. Gulfport Montessori Elementary School is one of two county schools to earn the award. The other is Tarpon Springs High School.
GMES leaders showed why they deserve the award by spotlighting the school’s community involvement. Also in its favor was how it closed the achievement gap, according to Montessori coordinator Annette Anthony.
As for the 2023-2024 academic year, Gulfport Montessori Elementary School is accepting applications for openings in kindergarten, fourth grade and fifth grade.
“The Montessori Method cultivates the child’s natural desire to learn by incorporating uniquely-designed materials into the standards based curriculum using group lessons and work plans,” according to the Pinellas County Schools website. “The kinder-
garten child achieves a holistic education through sensorial and practical life studies. Grace and Courtesy lessons teach responsibility, respect, and cooperative learning in all our classroom communities.”
Pinellas County Schools offers 23 unique elementary magnet and fundamental programs. Many of them are available to students who live anywhere in the county, but some have designated application areas.
Gulfport Montessori Elementary School is classified by the county school district as a South County Program. Students zoned for Azalea, Bay Point, John Hopkins, Meadowlawn, and Tyrone Middle Schools can apply for South County Programs according to the district website.
To apply or for more information, go to pcsb.org and click on the “District Application Programs” drop-down menu. From there, select “Elementary School Programs.”
PLANNING AND ZONING BOARD/LPA BOARD MEMBER
The City of Gulfport is accepting applications from Gulfport residents to serve as a volunteer on the Planning and Zoning Board/Local Planning Agency (LPA) in the position of Alternate Member. The Board meets monthly, on the first Wednesday at 6:00 p.m., provided there are matters for consideration and recommendation to City Council in accordance with Chapter 22 of the Code of Ordinances. Board applications may be obtained at City Hall or online at mygulfport.us under Departments, City Clerk, Resources.
For additional appointment information, please contact the City Clerk’s Office 893-1012.

From Furniture Store To Training Restaurant ProjectFREE Hopes To Move to Gulfport Furniture
By Cameron Healy
After Gulfport Furniture closed its 22nd Street South building, many noticed a donkey with sunflowers painted on the side of the building. What’s that building turning into?
The nonprofit organization ProjectFREE wants to lease this building.
If they get the lease, the group says they want the once-furniture store to become a training restaurant for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The culinary program will teach people how to work in a kitchen, according to Director of ProjectFREE Kim Costanzo. Eventually, the restaurant would be open to the public.
ProjectFREE “directly benefits
the health and well-being of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by enhancing their lives through creative arts programming and practices,” according to the organization’s website.
Co-Founder Sharon Vanderlinde said the organization celebrates 10 years of implementing opportunities for people with disabilities.
Vanderlinde explained ProjectFREE originated because of her daughter Lauren, who has Down syndrome. She said Lauren felt bored and stuck in most adult day training programs.
“She had over 10 years drum training and excelled in art. Her
goal was to be in a rock band. No band would audition her. Her art classes were limited,” Vanderlinde said. “ProjectFREE was born.”
ProjectFREE created a music academy called Free2Rock. The band name is Solar Flair. Vanderlinde said Solar Flair is the “only local rock band featuring musicians with the diverse abilities.”
It doesn’t stop at a rock band. The organization has other programs including an artisan entrepreneur program, a theater group, a visual arts gallery. Now, Costanzo said the group hopes to integrate the first culinary program in the state for people with disabilities.

Question: Before COVID-19, the Gulfport Trolley came into Town Shores to pick up and drop off residents of the condo buildings. The Gulfport Trolley is back in service according to a recent article in The Gabber Newspaper, but it does not come into Town Shores. Why is that? Can the route return to going to the buildings in Town Shores when the trolley is in service? –Rhoda
Levine
Answer: We asked the City of Gulfport’s Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor, Justin Shea, if he could help.
“Including Town Shores was very important in planning the Special Event Looper’s Route [Gulfport Trolley],” Shea told The Gabber Newspaper. “On the route, the vehicle will enter Town Shores via 28th Avenue South and exit Town Shores via Shore Boulevard South. The route is approximately a 20-minute loop. In addition, as we drive the route, if someone waives/hails the driver, we will stop at the next safe location and bring them into the event.”
People who want to ride the Gulfport Trolley can check the route at mygulfport.us/trolley. There, the City has a route map, schedule, parking locations, and other information.
“In addition,” Shea said, “we are in the process of the designing the marketing material for the Special Events Looper. Furthermore, input is always encouraged to make this service your service, if anyone needs more information and/or has any questions or concerns about the trolley service,
they can reach me at my office at 727893-1066.”
Finally, don’t look for a full-size trolley; rather, the Gulfport “Trolley” is a minibus.

Murder Rising Gulfport Writer Launches Latest Florida Murder Mystery
By Amanda Hagood
Seasoned detective Joe Hampton just wants what we all want: to retire peacefully and enjoy a bit of the Florida lifestyle. But a series of murders at his Clearwater condo pulls him back into the sleuthing game, and right into the path of a murderer who’d also like him to retire – permanently.
So runs the plotline of Stephen Burdick’s Yesterday Rising (Down & Out Books, 2023), a collection of three novellas featuring Hampton, his new friends at Clearwater PD, and a whole lotta murder in paradise. The volume is the second in Burdick’s Gray Detective series, following a similar three-novella collection, “The Gray Detective” (Down & Out Books, 2022).
Putting the Pieces Together
Burdick, a Gulfport resident for the last 20 years, has been a lifelong fan of mysteries, which he remembers enjoying alongside his mother as a child. But writing his own fiction came much later. While working at Madeira Beach Parks Department, he shared a story he wrote with his boss, then with friends and family –
all of whom told him to keep it up.
“They thought there was something to it,” he recalls.
In 2012, he found a writers’ group at the Gulfport Public Library. Despite some initial hesitation – “I couldn’t believe there were so many people. And they were all really good writers!” – he started sharing a trove of detective novellas he’d written, all set in the Tampa Bay area.
The Plot Thickens
Joe Hampton, intrepid retiree detective, began to emerge. In Yesterday Rising, he confronts a series of trials including a double-murder family drama, would-be girlfriends seeking revenge, and a serial killer who specializes in leaving his victims’ limbs in local parks.
Through all this fast-paced action and gritty police banter, his relationship with his boss, Detective Sergeant Carly Truffant, shines through as one of the most unique and complex elements of the book. Not quite a romance, but much more than a friendship, theirs is a bond that has survived many close scrapes, and makes each character all the more
dynamic as it develops.
Then there’s Joe’s relationship with his recently deceased wife, whose fantasy it was to move to Clearwater. While she did not live to realize that dream, she’s still there in spirit – literally. She’s a wry and encouraging voice in Joe’s ear that adds a special poignancy to the tired bones and loneliness he sometimes feels.
The Next Chapter
As for Burdick, he’s far from finished. While he has told all of his Joe Hampton stories for the moment, a new detective and a new series – Jan Larkin of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department – is on the horizon. He will also share a reading from Yesterday Rising at the Gulfport Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 5.
And he has some advice for other aspiring writers: “Persevere! You have to keep knocking on doors and stay with it until you find the right publisher for your book.”
“And find a good writers’ group!” he adds.

A Tasty Florida Murder
‘A Clue in the Crumbs’ Features Murder, Cake, and Key West
By Cathy Salustri
With each of Lucy Burdette’s Key West murder mystery books, I read whatever bodies her heroine, Hayley Snow, has found with rapt attention. Not only because I love the cozy mystery genre, but because Burdette writes with feeling about two things close to my heart: food and the Florida Keys.
The 13th in her Key West Food Critic Mystery series, A Clue in the Crumbs (Crooked Lane, August 2023), doesn’t disappoint. When I reviewed A Dish to Die For I wrote I couldn’t read one of her books without wanting to head to the Florida Keys. This has not changed.
Before tucking into Crumbs, I wondered what new ideas Burdette’s latest would have. After reading 12 others, I knew to expect at least one body and a lot of food. But how many new ways can an author concoct for the protagonist to find a dead body? I needn’t have worried – and neither should fans. This Key West murder mystery has twists, turns – and cake.
The Scottish Scone Sisters, introduced in A Scone of Contention, travel across the pond from Scotland to Key West. The reason? To
host “The UK Bakes – Key West Edition.” Of course, things go awry. A fire, a dead body, and swapped ingredients all bake up into a tasty murder mystery.
Key West’s tropical setting aside, Burdette’s book has some great bits in it, starting on page two, where Burdette slips in some stealth history:
“Our island was traumatized by a
fire in 1886 that burned most of Old Town ... the downtown consisted mostly of wooden structures, historically correct and colorful conch homes, set close together ... The fire burned for 12 hours, killed seven people, and destroyed many notable buildings. In the department of horrifying coincidence, the only fire engine on the island had been sent away for repairs.”
Granted, most cozy fans don’t turn pages in search of history. Nevertheless, for Florida history buffs, this adds a nice touch.
Of course, the history takes a backseat to the murder – and the food. Before the reader realizes it, A Clue in the Crumbs launches into drama and intrigue, Key-West style. Old favorite characters return – Lorenzo, as always, deserves a larger role, and none of the books would be worth reading without plucky Miss Gloria. As for who killed the abusive husband? While you may find it tempting to think, as did I, the victim properly punished and his killer, a hero, no cozy worth its salt leaves a murder unsolved, and A Clue in the Crumbs makes no exception.
As with all truly delightful cozy mysteries, the pages turn too quickly, and all too soon, the murder gets solved ,and that’s all she wrote. At least, until next time.
Thankfully, Burdette writes a new book as reliably as Hayley finds dead bodies: Every year.

Murder most tasty: Aside from a few recipes gone awry, Burdette’s latest book makes for delicious reading.

Tourist Town
‘Visit Joe Whitefeather’ Worth the Drive
By David Warner
Why rename your town? Tourism! Or at least that’s what the residents of Beaver Gap think in Bruce Graham’s new comedy Visit Joe Whitefeather (and bring the family!). The show manages to be at once cynical and forgiving about human nature — and funny, too.
Florida Studio Theatre commissioned the 2020 play from Graham, an award-winning, Pennsylvania-based playwright . Graham wrote the play after learning that Jim Thor-
pe, the Native American war hero and Olympic champion, had never set foot in Jim Thorpe, PA. The town (formerly known as Mauch Chunk) renamed itself in 1954 after civic officials, in hopes of boosting tourism, made a deal with Thorpe’s widow to have his remains buried there and a memorial built.
Graham moves the story to 1974 in the fictional Beaver Gap, PA. The
Watergate scandal is in the news, but town council has more immediate matters in mind: debating rescuing their dying town by changing its name to Joe Whitefeather (a legendary Native American with, you guessed it, no connection to the town). Graham frames the action through recollections from Lucy, 70-something proprietor of the Tranquility boutique, which she opened as a young woman (Malka Wallick). Lucy tells her story to a young Black filmmaker, Marcus (London Carlisle), who’s making a documentary about the Joe Whitefeather saga. While Crow is spot-on as the older incarnation of Lucy, a pot-smoking bohemian with a wry sense of humor, the doc-making flashback device feels a bit forced, until….

Visit Joe Whitefeather (and bring the family!) at Florida Studio Theatre in downtown Sarasota has a stellar cast.
JOHN JONES
A T-shirt saying “I’m the f-ing librarian!’ would be an instant best-seller.
Well, can’t give that away. The first act sets up the details of the re-naming scheme, presented by the over-eager mayor as being in the town’s “best interests.” Things really get complicated (hilariously so) in the livelier second act. That’s when plans for the memorial get threatened by a surprise visitor, and the mayor and his cohorts begin to look toward notquite-legal solutions.
The cast, directed with elan by Kate Alexander, is terrific. Kraig Swartz is the mayor, a well-meaning font of political incorrectness. Case in point: Wishing to impress a visitor (played to steely perfection by Anat Cogan) with his knowledge of Native American customs, he tells her, “We’ll never walk a mile in your moccasins.” Malka Wallick, ideally cast as Crow’s younger counterpart, bristles with intelligence and (at first) high moral dudgeon. Britt Michael Gordon is charmingly low-key as a gentle cop who may or may not be a love interest for Lucy. Finally, Jared Sellick has a fine comic turn as an undertaker (ahem, “funeral director”) who bemoans the drop in his business caused by cigarette warnings and seat belts.
My favorite character is Ellie Mooney’s Abigail, the sweet-as-pie town librarian. She’s also a foulmouthed, hard-drinking harridan after hours. How does she find out everyone’s secrets? Because “I’m the f-ing librarian!” she announces. (Mooney does double duty as Joanie, the cranky town secretary and a Nixon fan.)
The set by Isabel A. & Moriah Curley-Clay morphs nicely from boutique to town hall to living room. Its warm woods and brick accents are warmly lit by Ben Rawson, and Mari Taylor Floyd’s costumes are on-the-nose ’70s.
And may I recommend a merchandising opportunity? A T-shirt saying “I’m the f-ing librarian!’ would be an instant best-seller.
