voices Why Not Keep Zoom for Council?
Dear Mayor Henderson: Your comments about and the council’s decision to end Zoom meetings [“Council Returns to ‘Normal,’” May 27, 2021] is a slap in the face to anyone who is immunity compromised, has any physical challenges or lacks transportation options to attend in person. Do you believe in open and transparent government? Zoom has facilitated incredible access to and participation in events worldwide. What burden does having the meeting on Zoom place on the city? It’s clearly time for a change in leadership in Gulfport. – Paul Congo

Gulfport Woman Recounts Harrowing Tale of Irma on an Island If it wasn’t for Hurricane Irma, Cindy Clayton and her husband Eric might still be living in the British Virgin Islands, running a hotel business with their six dogs and sky-blue swimming pool. In 2017, the Category 5 storm completely demolished Clayton’s former life, shredding infrastructure and turning buildings into debris for all residents on the island. Hurricane season is upon once again, and the National Hurricane Center predicts record high Atlantic storms this year. Pinellas County may not be an island, but residents can learn a thing or two from Cindy Clayton.
CINDY CLAYTON
By Abby Baker
Cindy’s Story A retired flight attendant, Clayton moved to the British Virgin Islands with her husband and daughter in 2002 to live the dream of owning a hotel in paradise. Then came Irma. Planes left the island a week before it hit, stranding many residents. “It hit in the morning, 6 a.m. I watched it come in, but I’d wish I hadn’t,” Clayton recalls. “It sounds like a freight train coming down on you, and the wind is white when it blows that hard.” Clayton watched the white winds snap trees in half, empty swimming

pools and blowing furniture across the island. Then she watched the building her daughter and daughter’s fiancée were in collapse. It wasn’t until the eye of the storm passed over them that Clayton was able to react. “I slammed open the door. I remember screaming to my husband, ‘I want my daughter,’” Clayton said. “In a situation like that, you have Herculean strength, and we pulled
the rubble out.” Her family was alive, and while the storm temporarily quelled, the Claytons packed 22 people into two safe rooms in the hotel. Thinking the storm was over, some people emerged onto the street. “My daughter, my husband and I, along with six dogs, hid under mattresses in the bathroom,” Clayton said. “We stayed in the same position for about four hours. By the time the storm ended, it was night time.” Despite an evacuation offer by the American Residency, Clayton and her family stayed for an additional five months to rehome some of their pets. “I’m always surprised when I see hurricane pictures and there’s leaves on the trees and grass,” Clayton said. “Irma destroyed everything; there was nothing left.” For months, they lived without power or reliable water, creating a makeshift kitchen out of the “plywood and debris, and rationing one

Eventually, Clayton moved back to North Carolina before settling down in Gulfport. “We never thought we’d be starting over in our 60s,” Clayton said. Though Irma went on to cause severe destruction in Florida, particularly in the Keys, it made only a glancing blow to the Tampa Bay area, knocking down trees and zapping power to some for weeks. Pinellas County hasn’t suffered a direct hit from a major hurricane since 1921, but it’s an event meteorologists predict as increasingly likely. The 1921 storm pushed an 11-foot surge of water into the bay, according to NOAA, reducing many structures to “rubble,” and claimed at least eight lives. Having lived through it once, Clayton’s family prepares for the

worst every summer. In addition to stocking up on cases of water, chlorine tablets, batteries and other necessities, Clayton also thinks about the longterm aftermath of a major storm. “One of the most important
things we do is keep all documents in a waterproof container,” Clayton said. Learn more about hurricane preparation on page 7. Stay on top of storm coverage this year at nhc. noaa.gov.

Meteorologist Daniel Noah Helps You Prepare for Hurricane Season According to a study conducted by NASA, a strong hurricane can contain as much power as 10,000 nuclear bombs during its lifespan. Judging by the lack of attendance at Gulfport’s Hurricane Seminar May 27, residents may need a refresher on just how serious our storms can be. Beginning June 1 and extending through November 30, this hurricane season is predicted to be an active one. During the May 27 virtual presentation at 6 p.m. at the Catherine Hickman Theater, Meteorologist Daniel Noah said between 13 and 20 named storms are expected in 2021. Of those, between six and 10 are predicted to be hurricanes, and three to five are slated to be major hurricanes. The barrier islands of the Tampa Bay area and Southwest Florida top the list as some of the most difficult locations to evacuate during a hurricane. But when you get off the island, where do you go? Noah suggests if you are going to evacuate, stay in a safe place closer to home, like a local shelter, rather than taking a long road trip to avoid being stuck in a car when the storm hits. Noah also stressed that prepar-

ing for the aftermath of a hurricane is as important as preparing for the storm itself. “Avoid floods at all costs,” Noah said, noting that floods – even after a storm has passed – are the second leading cause of death in a storm. But beyond personal safety, residents should also prepare for flooding by talking to their insurance providers now about the extent of their home’s coverage. This is also the time to stock up on all of your hurricane supplies, said Noah, which the State of Flor-

The Gulfport Vibrator Races were perhaps one of the most anticipated events at Gulfport Pride. An entirely new set of sex toys were purchased just a week before the event due to a theft of the original items at Salty’s Bar. “I was hoping [the thief] would make a guest appearance,” joked Brianna Summers, a drag performer who hosted the race.

Casino and Senior Center Officially Reopen
As More People Get Vaccinated, Gulfport Facilities See Return to ‘Normal’ Both the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center and the Gulfport Casino Ballroom reopened their doors to the public in the first week of June. Back in Step For the past 18 months, the Gulfport Casino Ballroom, located at 5500 Shore Blvd. S., has been closed, but not empty. Renovations to the floors, bathroom and lighting have been underway in the historic landmark. Starting on Tuesday, June 1, dance lessons, including beginning, swing, tango and more, resumed. “We’re excited to get the dance community back again,” said Justin Shea, Gulfport’s Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor. “We’re glad to bring the people back.” As far as regulations, that’s up to the attendees. “The setting floor plan is socially

Dog Park Ready for Play
Gulfport’s Dog Park Reopens After Regular Maintenance Dogs are free to run around, sniff the ground and play their hearts out in Gulfport’s newly reopened dog park at Chase Park, 5313 27th Ave. S. The park reopened to the public on May 28 after undergoing annual maintenance. Tony Taylor and his two dogs attend the big dog park on a weekly basis. “It’s been a dust bowl and a mud bowl for a while and now it’s beautiful,” he said on Saturday, May 29. “It looks so nice that they’ve redone the park. People can enjoy it now.” After watching his dog, Ollie, take laps around the fresh grass, Taylor said, “As you can see, she’s enjoying it a lot. It’s finally clean!” The park is separated into two areas, one for big dogs and one for small pups. Both have new turf and shady spaces for the dogs and their owners to cool off and drink water. Ana Marini brings her two puppies, 8-month-old Mary and 1.5-year-old Ella, to play in the small dog park every weekend. “We love it and we love the community,” Marini said Saturday. “We always come out and hang with the other dog lovers.”

Gypsy Life
Celebrating Gulfport’s Leta Woloshuk Leta Woloshuk, part of the popular musical duo The Urban Gypsies of Florida, passed away May 21, just one day before her 46th birthday, after a battle with breast cancer. Life partner and fellow musician, Barney Waterbury, held and sang to her for 52 hours before her passing. “I think she was this wild mare. She was an adventurer, never afraid of anything,” Waterbury said. “I called her ‘The Lovely Leta.’” Characteristically, Leta blew into St. Petersburg from Santa Fe, New Mexico during the middle of a Florida hurricane in 1998. “Leta came to Florida for her; she stayed for her too,” Waterbury said. She was 24, and spent her last $20 on drums in a Madeira Beach coffee shop, when she ran into Waterbury. For that 1990s weekend, the two danced, drummed and sailed Waterbury’s 32-foot sailboat into what he calls “the middle of no-

The Urban Gypsies of Florida started in 1997 as an entanglement of seven music makers – mostly young people vying for a connection with music on the stage. By 2021, the group had evolved to be Waterbury and Woloshuk, mainly singing songs the couple wrote together. Wherever they were, often recently at The North End Taphouse or other free-spirited local pub, people listened to their folksy sound and original songs about suitcases or childhood memories. When she wasn’t performing, Leta was healing people, either with her hands or her words. “I would always say, ‘What Would Leta Do?’” Waterbury recalls. “She had like a book of sayings....I remember I was being hateful to her

Gulfport is mourning the loss of Leta Woloshuk, half of the musical duo The Urban Gypsies of Florida.
“I’m gonna miss those conversations, and hearing her voice,” said friend Isabella Kontrick.
“I’m gonna miss those conversations, and hearing her voice.” Waterbury plans to have a celebration of her life and spread Leta’s ashes in the future, but not just yet. “I’m going to wait till I need people the most; right now I’m high
on her memory,” Waterbury said. “When people die, everyone shows up, but eventually I’ll be all alone.” For now, you can catch a glimpse of her memory and her banjo on stage. Follow the Urban Gypsies of Florida at facebook.com/UrbanGypsiesOfFlorida.
Lovely Leta Lives On In Waterbury’s words, “people have to get real jobs eventually.” So did the Urban Gypsies. Woloshuk too, grew up, and eventually she and her partner bought a house, built on the same property as her healing business, The Art of Massage. “She was a healer, a fixer – all she wanted was to help people get better,” Waterbury said. There, Woloshuk was only able to complete three massages before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “She was a force to be reckoned with,” said 17-year-old Isabella Kontrick, whose mother worked with Woloshuk as a masseuse. “Everyone who interacted with her wanted to be better; she made me see things about myself that I didn’t know.” Woloshuk and the teenager, who often spent hours at Leta’s home and garden during her mother’s work, formed an unlikely bond. “When the coronavirus hit, my mom was working with her closely, and I would go with my mom to help,” Kontrick said. “I would talk to [Leta] in the garden. She was good at threading in life lessons; she taught me the power of simplicity.

Don’t Forget Your Pets
Make Plans Now for Your Pet in a Storm By Gabrielle Reeder
Shelter: It’s a common myth that once an evacuation order goes out, hotels must take pets. That’s far from the case, so make sure to have a list of pet-friendly shelters and hotels on hand. Even better, make plans now for your pets to stay with a non-evacuating friend or family member. Food and Water: It’s smart to have a two-week supply of water and food for your pet, whether you evacuate or not. Seal the food to ensure it stays fresh. Don’t forget a can opener if you need one!
Medical: Shelters may require vaccination records, so be sure to keep your pet up-to-date. Carry a copy of their medical records, identification information, tags and photos. It’s also a good idea to have at least a month’s supply of preventative medicine for fleas and ticks, as well as any other medicine your pet takes, and keep your vet’s number handy.
PXHERE
We all love our pets, but it’s easy to forget that they have special needs and considerations when it comes time to prepare for a storm – especially if you evacuate. Here are some things to think about for your furry and feathered friends this hurricane season.
Carrying: Many shelters require your pet to stay in a carrier or cage, and these are also important for traveling with your pet. Buy one now and make sure your pet is comfortable with the size and space. Waste: Be ready to deal with it! Whether you evacuate or shelter in place, be sure to have enough litter supplies for cats and doggie bags for dogs. Other Necessities and Comfort: If you’re evacuating, be sure to bring leashes and collars, with IDs attached, as well as treats, toys, blankets and other items that make them feel safe and comfortable. It’s not a bad idea to have a life jacket on hand as well, if applicable.

Bryant was booked at the Pinellas County Jail and charged with arson and abuse of a dead human body on Wednesday, May 26 and is currently being held on a $500,000 bond. Police do not believe Bryant played a part in death of Jesus Manuel Tavarez-Soto, 55, but that he disposed of the body after discovering it. “The investigation supported the fact that the victim died from other means and that Bryant disposed of the body by placing it in the trunk of the vehicle and burning them both,” the Gulfport Police Department wrote in a press release. The cause of Tavarez-Soto’s death is still undetermined. Back in September Eight months ago, the Gulfport and St. Petersburg police departments worked together after a burning car was reported by a biker on the Skyway Trail near the Twin Brooks Golf Course at 22nd Avenue South and 41st Street. The incinerated 2014 black Nis-

san Sentra was recovered by firefighters and upon further investigation, authorities found Tavarez-Soto’s body in the trunk. He was eventually identified through dental records, police said. “Based on the condition of the
skeletal remains found in the trunk, no evidence was identified showing trauma at or around the time of death according to the forensic anthropologist,” Gulfport police wrote in a press release. The investigation continues.

Gulfport Artist Recreates Emotions on Canvas By Abby Baker

“Springy and Gay.” “I explore where I want it to go, what I want the viewer to feel even though we all have our own history,” said Howell.
After a life of living across the country, painting, creating and working as a pastry chef, 63-yearold Amy Howell has settled in Gulfport to recreate her life again. Her colorful canvases, textured with cemented ceramic and painted almost manically, differ depending on her state of mind. “I feel like I’m putting together a puzzle. It’s best when I let it flow and don’t overthink it,” Howell said.
“Boats Behind Bamboo”
“It chooses me.” Howell’s work is inspired by African and Native American work, with geometric shapes and spiritual storytelling in the blurred lines. Of course, there’s a bit of Jackson Pollock in there, with bold colors and spontaneous, overlapping splashes. Titles like “Springy and Gay,” and “Going Against the Tide” do not define the work as much as her

her first oil painting class and never stopped putting her feelings on canvas. “I knew I didn’t want to stay in the Midwest, so I did some exploring in my twenties,” Howell said. “I fell in love with several cities.” She lived in Colorado and Oregon before falling in love and moving to Provincetown, Massachusetts, a small Cape Cod art town, with her wife. Howell’s rolling stone settled in Gulfport in 2019, where her paint runs a little more colorfully. “I moved to Provincetown when I couldn’t stop dreaming about it,” Howell said. “But there were a lot of gray days, and I knew I didn’t want to retire there. It wasn’t as diverse as Gulfport; there wasn’t as much going on.” Originally, the New Jersey native painted representational art from nature, and worked with photography. “With abstract there is more
freedom,” Howell said. “All those shapes and colors and textures stir different sensations.” Through last year’s shutdowns, her creations were gloomier, with dull colors and heavy drips down heavily textured surfaces. “Lately I wanted the series to be more uplifting. For a while my paintings were heavy, between the racial upheaval and the election,” Howell said. “I’ve been trying to focus on humanity and the human spirit.”

Fairey’s Mural Project Lands in St. Pete
Vitale Brothers Commissioned to Create the Healthcare Rights Mural As part of the Power to the Patients campaign, the back wall of the Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg now features artwork by OBEY creator and street artist, Shepard Fairey – most famous for his iconic Obama “Hope” poster – completed by the renowned St. Petersburg artist sibling group, the Vitale Brothers. Johnny, Paul and Joey Vitale completed the piece, which features a clenched fist and the phrase “prices are now a patient’s right” on the art center’s wall at 719 Central Ave., in April. While Fairey’s worldwide brand, OBEY, is commonly seen on hoodies, beanies and stickers, he started out graffiting political messages on public spaces. The artist and activist went back to his roots, creating mural designs in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, and now St. Petersburg for the national campaign.

A Street Art Campaign The OBEY creator launched the project in an effort to bring awareness to unfair medical bills and hidden costs following a patient’s care. “Patients deserve to know the prices of the procedures that they need ahead of time. They need to have the power to make good choices,” Fairey writes on the campaign’s website. “It’s enough

their strong presence in the St. Petersburg arts community. They’ve been painting St. Petersburg since 1992, with work for the Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among many others on their resume. “Paul and I started painting murals after working for a billboard company called Flexco,” Johnny said. “We lost our jobs when the billboard world went digital.” Joey, the youngest brother, joined the crew shortly after. “(St. Petersburg is) our home and it’s a special place to be artists,” Johnny said. "she saved my life"
Tampa Bay area resident Jean P. had been experiencing the painful side effects of peripheral neuropathy, “My feet and legs were extremely painful and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do and that I would have to take gabapentin for the rest of my life.” Then she met St. Petersburg's Dr. Rebecca Gibbons. Peripheral neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Jean explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?" She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling and sharp pains that those suffering with neuropathy often describe. “The way that I would describe it, is that it's equivalent to walking on glass.” Jean hadn’t worn socks in five years and was wearing shoes two sizes too big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her feet. Unfortunately Jean's story is all too familiar. For the over 3 million people in the U.S. suffering from peripheral neuropathy. If you’re unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis, you’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet. You have difficulty walking, shopping or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. You’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall.
Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have uncomfortable side effects. Dr. Gibbons, founder of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine in St. Petersburg, FL, is using the science of acupuncture and other integrative techniques that assist in increasing blood flow and expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease. “Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,”Jean enthusiastically describes life after receiving Dr. Gibbons treatments. 'I can wear socks and shoes!”
If you’ve missed too many tee times because of pain or you’ve had to miss out on enjoying our beautiful weather and beaches because you’re afraid of falling, it’s time to call Dr. Gibbons and the staff at Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine. It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN! There is so much to enjoy in St. Pete and Tampa Bay.
Dr. Gibbons is now accepting new patients. Call (727) 272-3587 now to schedule a consultation.
Jean and her sister now operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day. "It's life altering. As far as I am concerned, Dr. Gibbons saved my life!" Dr. Gibbons who has also been an RN for over 16 years, integrates both her western medicine background with effective eastern medicine strategies to be able to offer a different non-drug, non surgical option to those who have chronic pain and complex chronic conditions.
