voices Questions of Privilege Dear Editor: I’m fairly new to Gulfport (howdy, neighbors!) and received the May 13 issue of the Gabber. I was very interested in the article entitled “Greens for Those in Need” because I thought it was great encouragement for anyone to start a home garden with a small amount of space, even as small as a shipping container. But ultimately the article left a bad taste in my mouth with the mention of white privilege as Mr. Hart’s reason for pursuing this nonprofit microfarm.

For me, this additional piece of information was divisive and completely unnecessary.

I’m not sure what white privilege had to do with anything. Indeed, it’s slightly disturbing that any positive thing that someone does is only because of their “privilege.” The necessary corollary is that no one else can do anything if they don’t have

this alleged privilege. I think it’s a great idea and an attainable effort for anyone to maintain a small garden. But the mention of white privilege implies that non-white people couldn’t do the same thing, whether for the community or within their own homes. It was also strange coming on the heels of hearing about Mr. Hart’s own struggle with ulcerative colitis and being starvation-level weight at one point in his life. That is a sympathetic condition for anyone, yet I’m to believe that there’s still some privilege over someone in another group simply because he’s white. That’s a stretch, if not downright insulting.

There was no need for an article that presents a good idea to invoke division and limitation over a purported privilege that the very article shows me doesn’t exist. Time and chance happen to us all. Most important, everyone has something to bring to the table and we’ll get

much further if we allow and expect that instead of bringing up something we had absolutely no control in deciding. Pigmentation does not determine purpose or privilege. How a Texas Holiday Became a National Celebration of Emancipation On June 19, Gulfport celebrates Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the day in 1865 that enslaved people living in Galveston, TX received news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all people held as slaves in Confederate states would now be free. The Proclamation had gone into effect on January 1, 1863, but the news did not arrive in Galveston until a full 30 months later, when Federal troops took control of the city. The momentous and long-delayed message was greeted by the newly freed Galvestonians with prayer, feasting, singing and dancing – the origins of today’s Juneteenth celebrations.

While Texas takes the lead in this tale, many locales across the country have their own distinct stories commemorating the end of slavery and the arrival of hard-won freedom for enslaved Black Americans. Florida Emancipation Day, for instance, dates to May 20, 1865, when the forces of General Edward M. McCook raised the United States flag over the capitol building in Tallahassee and declared the Emancipation Proclamation to be in full force in Florida. May 20 has been celebrated in Tallahassee ever since with processions, picnics, readings

of the Emancipation Proclamation, and freedom drumming – a unique custom first created when Black Tallahasseeans took up the drums left behind by Federal troops and forged a new “freedom beat” to mark the occasion.

cused on January 1, the day the Emancipation Proclamation outlawed slavery in the Confederate states, celebrating with parades, feasts and speeches. In 1916, an Emancipation Day banquet was held to honor former slaves, now community elders, living in or near St. Petersburg. Later in the century, church leaders worked together, often with the support of the NAACP, to organize talks from inspiring speakers whose themes evolved with the times, ranging from the importance of education to the work of youth activists in the Civil Rights movement.

So how did Juneteenth, originally a Texas-based holiday, gain national significance? One answer is that it traveled with Black Texans as they followed the path of the Great Migration, the movement of more than 6 million Black Americans out of the

South and into the North, Midwest and West in the fifty years following World War I. The portability of this custom, as historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. has suggested, means that beyond remembering the events of June 19, 1865, Juneteenth also serves as “an occasion for gathering lost family members, measuring progress against freedom, and inculcating rising generation with the values of self-improvement and racial uplift.”

Another answer dates back to June of 1968, when, just a few months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph Abernathy and King’s widow, Corretta Scott King, planned a Junteenth celebration in Washington, D.C. The celebration marked the close of the Poor People’s March for economic justice that King had been planning when he was murdered.

In a poignant moment of hope and

despair, of celebration in the face of struggle, this occasion captured what journalist Vann R. Newkirk II calls the “dizzying contradiction” at the core of Juneteenth, which is both “second Independence Day and a reminder of ongoing oppression.”

Paulette Jones, founder of the Midtown Celebrity Club and one of three community leaders who have organized Juneteenth celebrations in St. Pete since 1992, echoes this sentiment. In a 2017 interview, she told The Weekly Challenger, “We want [the community] to know the importance of keeping hope alive, and we want our kids to know about our community leaders and the importance of education. There have been people that have died in order for us to have the right to vote, and it’s important that we acknowledge this.”

The many ways in which Floridians past and present honor the enormous significance of Emancipation reflects the fact that no one story can tell it all, and that the struggle to gain full freedom and protection under the law for all Americans is not yet over. One more step down this road may soon be accomplished: the Florida House is set to vote on a bill next session that would recognize both May 20 and June 19 as state holidays.

A Gulfport Memorial Marks the Fifth Anniversary of the Pulse Shooting

“49 beautiful faces for 49 beautiful lives that were mercilessly taken by hatred, power and gun violence,” said DeLaran, a musician and organizer of a Pulse Memorial in Gulfport on June 12.

It was the fifth anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub massacre in Orlando that claimed the lives of 49 people and wounded 53 others, many of whom were part of the LGBTQ and Latinx communities. At 6:30 p.m. people gathered at the Tiki Bar and Grill for the service, then walked to Gulfport Beach with 49 yellow, white and purple flowers.

“How can I really honor them?

This was the sweetest way I could think of. Anybody who wanted to participate could be included in that. And release [the flowers] and just have that moment, honoring their lives,” DeLaran said. “Even though we didn’t know them, they could have been our brother, they could have been our sister. They could have been our fathers or cousins or best friends.”

After the flowers were distributed, each person picked the petals off the flowers and delicately dispersed them into the water. Silence swallowed the group as they watched the petals float.

Fred Held Habitat Gets Makeover

A Hidden Gem in South Pasadena Gets a New Look The City of South Pasadena’s Public Works Department spent five weeks trimming, cutting and beautifying the Fred Held Habitat in an extensive cleanup effort.

“This gave a whole new look to the park,” said Lynda Thompson, South Pasadena Public Works Commissioner. “Now, driving by in your car you can see straight to the water.”

In 2004, the park was named after former City Commissioner and Mayor Fred Held, who died in 2015. The nearly hidden gem at 2500 Pasadena Ave. S. is also home to 10 personal workout stations.

“If you see some of the public works guys out there working, make sure to let them know what a great job they did,” Thompson said.

To the dismay of the Blueberry Patch’s family of devotees, Florida’s oldest surviving artist retreat took a hiatus from the scene in 2019 in an effort to bring new infrastructure to the overflowing art venue, located at 4923 20th Ave. S. in Gulfport.

Two years later, on Saturday, June 5 of 2021, the hippie-style outdoor space hosted a comeback featuring local performers, vendors and a silent auction.

“This is a welcoming home,” said Blueberry Patch volunteer Jacqueline Davis. “Many of us, we need this place.”

Fresh Fruit The Blueberry Patch, founded on July 7, 1977 by Dallas Bohrer, is a hidden forest, electric with curious sculptures, painted cars and people draped in tie-dye.

Once visitors get past the gate, it’s tough to remember the venue sits directly across the street from a Wells Fargo Bank. The Patch runs solely on donations and the commitment of volunteers who show up every Saturday to maintain the backyard jungle.

“We’re happy to be back, to give people a place to express themselves and grow,” said Bob Feckner, a board member at the Patch.

Volunteers have maintained the nonprofit venue for the entirety of the Blueberry Patch’s two-year hiatus.

The nonprofit returns with a few notable upgrades, including a modern bathroom building complete with a refillable water bottle station and murals on the doors.

The venue also upgraded electrical work and ensured the stage and bathrooms are ADA accessible.

For followers, this is huge, considering when the venue moved to 20th Avenue in 2003, it was shut down by the city for code violations just a few months after reopening.

Today, the nonprofit is run by a collection of chairpeople and advocates, with no official president.

“I’m so thankful there’s a board of directors,” said Laura Shepherd, a Patch performer, before she burst into song. “Bob keeps this place running when we’ve all gone somewhere else.”

Like Family According to Feckner, Bohrer, who is something of a legend around the Patch, lived on the property until 2013 when he moved to a nursing home.

The Blueberry Patch founder had a fear of banks and an obsession with numerology, prompting the Patch goers to start volunteer times at 11:11 a.m. on the dot to this day.

Longtime volunteers William Beck and Molly Hogan knew Bohrer in their youth, and have lived through transformations to the retreat over the years.

“I remember drinking sake with him on his front porch,” Beck said.

“It’s 100 percent evolved a lot.

There was much more of a loose format back in the day.”

Hogan, who’s been coming to the Blueberry Patch since she was 7, recalls the time when people slept and even lived there.

“Dallas would give anybody a place to stay. It was more of a communal place; we’re all like family,” Hogan said at the reopening.

The Stinger Bar in Gulfport said goodbye to the community after 10 years.

Gulfport King Charles Spaniel Takes on Westminster Dog Show

Miss Bliss, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sporting a Mairlyn Monroe-esque beauty mark and a price tag of upwards of $4,500, can be found lounging, tongue-out, on her owner Michele True’s Gulfport front porch most days.

On Saturday, June 12, at 1 p.m. on the dot, the local spaniel became canine royalty, brushed and blown out, prancing across the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show’s stage in Tarrytown, New York and live streamed in prime time.

Though Bliss left New York without any new ribbons, True couldn’t be more honored to compete.

“We’re content and couldn’t be happier,” True said. “She showed her little heart out.”

According to True, Miss Bliss made it with a handful of other spaniels to the “almost” final cut, and was the only dog in her breed that made it that far without the luxury of a pro-

fessional handler.

“We’re so proud of this girl and her spirited approach to life,” True said.

“We didn’t win any awards, but we certainly won when she came into our lives.”

Best in Show, Westminster Edition The Westminster Dog Show, an illustrious canine competition that compares The American Kennel Club (AKC) dog breeds on their conformity to the specific breed standards, was held outdoors on an estate in Tarrytown instead of Madison Square Garden for the first time in 145 years.

There were no physical spectators or vendors this year, but the cameras continued to roll.

“There’s no money, but there is a big stinkin’ trophy,” True said, with a tiny spaniel sleeping at her feet.

“It’s not about the money; it’s about

dedication to the breed and for a lot of people, the validation of doing a spot-on job.”

For Miss Bliss and the other 33 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that competed in the race for perfection, the change of venue due to pandemic precautions made no difference to the intensity of the competition.

“Of course I hope she wins, but I’m really rooting for the breed,” True said before the competition. “I’d be happy to see a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the top.”

Still, the toy breed has never yet won Best in Show at Westminster, with Pomeranians and Pekingese frequenting the winner’s circle.

It was True and Bliss’s first time entering the Westminster ring; furry contestants can only attend if they are champion dog show winners and are chosen in a lottery system, or if they get formally invited.

Blood Lines Miss Bliss is 11 months old and fairly new to the dog-showing game, but so is her owner, who started

showing and breeding Cavalier King Charles Spaniels six years ago in Florida.

Miss Bliss’s previous competitions around the country have typically ended in success.

“We only show a dog if the dog enjoys it; when we bring Miss Bliss into the ring she really struts her stuff, she hears people clapping and she’s like, ‘Is that for me?’” True said. “We have a boy who immediately was like, ‘Yeah no,’ so it just depends on the dog’s personality.”

Miss Bliss received a two-hour grooming session the day before the show and a period of time bonding with her handler in Tallahassee before the championship weekend.

“They’re getting used to each other’s energies: sleeping together, going on walks,” True said.

This may not be the last time Miss Bliss takes on Westminster; perhaps the long-haired contender will return with some seasoning under her collar.

Red Tide Is Back

Pinellas County and the FWC Are Monitoring New Algae Blooms

In a statement on Friday, June 11, Pinellas County announced that, along with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), they are monitoring new concentrations of red tide detected in water samples taken off county beaches.

Satellite imagery shows that the current bloom is patchy, according to the county, and there are no beach closures so far.

“We’re monitoring the situation closely in coordination with municipal and state partners,” said Kelli Hammer Levy, Director of Pinellas County Public Works. “We’re not anywhere near the impacts we saw in 2018, but we’re watching this closely from the land, the sea,

and the air. We’ll keep our community informed and provide necessary support as needed.”

Higher concentrations of red tide can cause respiratory irritation, especially with onshore wind.

“While there are too many variables for experts to predict whether this bloom will dissipate or worsen,” the release read, “Pinellas County is prepared to alert the public of potential health impacts and clean up dead fish if the situation worsens.”

So far, says the county, impacts of this bloom have been minimal, with “minor fish kills.” Residents can report fish kills to FWC at habforecast.gcoos.org or by calling 800-636-0511. The county advises

Red tide blooms are worsened by excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous. The county reminds residents that fertilizers “containing nitrogen and phosphorus cannot be used or sold through September 30, and phosphorus cannot be used any time of year unless a soil test confirms that it is needed.”

crime Missing Person’s Body Found in Fire Near Skyway A body discovered in a St. Petersburg fire on Wednesday night, June 9, was determined to be a missing Tampa woman by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

On June 9, the St. Petersburg Fire Department responded to a grass fire burning near a rest area just before the Skyway Bridge; firefighters put out the flames, then found the body around 8 p.m.

On Thursday, June 10, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released a statement that the body had been identified as a Tampa woman in her 30s, who was reported as a missing person on Wednesday by a relative. Police have not yet released the woman’s name, however her vehicle was discovered at her Town ‘N’ Country condominium, leading Hillsborough County Police to believe that

this is a homicide investigation.

The Skyway Bridge and close surrounding areas are under the jurisdiction of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, according to Crystal Clark, a spokeswoman

for the sheriff’s office.

The investigation is ongoing.

GCP’s ‘Birds of a Feather’ Hatches Laughs, Ponders Love in All Forms Think back to the last time you saw a play where the main characters were talking birds. Were you there as a result of familial obligations?

Was it at an elementary school? Did it involve someone’s mom hot-gluing a bag of feathers to an old Hanes T-shirt? Regardless of your feelings on theater by and/or for children, take note: Gulfport Community Players’ “Birds of a Feather” is no kids show. There are life lessons aplenty for humans big and small, but if you bring the wee ones be prepared for a lively discussion on the ride home.

The script by Marc Acito is inspired by the same real-life events featured in the 2005 children’s book “And Tango Makes Three” by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson. Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins in New York’s Central Park Zoo, bonded, hatched an abandoned egg from another penguin, and raised the chick as their own. While the play similarly centers on a pair of penguins embarking on parenthood together, it ventures much further into grown-up talk as it ruminates not only on the definition of family, but also on the themes of nature vs. nurture, physical and emotional inti-

That’s a lot of ground to cover, and the playwright sometimes struggles to avoid heavy-handed monologuing. But Director Patrick Brafford, who also designed the smartly efficient set, coaxes genuinely engaging, funny, and oftentimes touching performances from his cast to balance out the weight of the show’s messaging.

As the two penguins at the center of the story, Daniel Harris and Nic Roland strike up compelling chemistry, no small feat considering unexpected co-parenting isn’t the only complication in their relationship: Roland’s Silo is reluctant to fully own his identity as one half of a sincerely loving pair, in contrast with Harris’ exuberantly all-in Roy. “Birds” is a comedy about gay penguins, and the yuks are solid and flow steadily: Roland and Harris could probably sit back and coast on a clever premise, fanciful costumes and a lot of well-crafted jokes. But the production is elevated by their willingness to dig into the, well, humanity of these penguins.

And while Harris and Roland anchor the show as the penguins everyone was talking about, they aren’t the only notable birds in the ensemble. High above Silo and Roy in Central Park, perched on the ledge of a swank New York apartment building, red-tailed hawks Pale Male and Lola have built a nest and a life together and they’re generating Kardashian-like buzz on the streets below. convincing swagger and killer instinct to Pale Male, while Jennifer Casler’s Lola charms as his mate, at first skeptical and slightly naive, but she’s a quick study and the two make a pretty epic New York power couple.

If there is some sort of community theatre MVP award to be given, let it be shared by the rest of GCP’s “Birds” ensemble: Donna DeLonay, Sam DePriest and Velda Gauthier. The three actors round out the cast by portraying another 10 characters (11 if you count the fact that Gauthier portrays Tango as a teen and a young woman), and the trio of actors bring fantastic bursts of levity and balance to the show. Most of the characters are humans who end up in the birds’ orbit: some are broadly funny and played for laughs, while others – DeLonay’s zookeeper, for one – weave poignant arcs through the show.

“Birds of a Feather” runs for five more performances, June 17 to June 20, at the Catherine Hickman Theater.

Verdino, Frank, 54, from Gulfport, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 5, 2021. Frank was born in Amityville, New York. The family moved to Florida where Frank was educated at Pinellas Park High School, then served in the Marine Reserves from 1985 to 1992. He became skilled in many fields during his career, first as a printer and then as a butcher. A self-taught watercolor artist and clay potter, Frank leaves a substantial body of work. He enjoyed photography, gardening, reading and fishing, had a great love of animals and delighted family and friends with his scratch cooking skills, honed from his Italian New Yorker roots. Frank was involved in many community causes and organizations, including as a dedicated volunteer with the Gulfport Historical Society. He was not afraid to raise his head above the parapet for causes he believed in or to speak his mind. Most of all, however, Frank was known for his genuine, friendly smile, generosity and conversation, enjoying leisurely mornings at Gulfport’s SumitrA Espresso Lounge, where he is much missed.

Frank is survived by his beloved daughter, Maggie, mother Geraldine Westermann, her husband Greg, sisters Tina St Pierre, Theresa Leinbach, Maria Kinzer, Christine Haswell, eight nieces and nephews, two great nieces, one great nephew and former spouse Patrice Verdino. Predeceased by his father, Frank Verdino Sr. His cat Tinkerbell and grand-dog Max miss him every day.

Special thanks for the care shown to Frank by Michael Tedesco and staff at St. Anthony’s Hospital Cardiac ICU.

Popcorn Potential With few launch date details but much excitement, Rooftop Cinema Club is bringing a drive-in movie theater to the Warehouse Arts District of St. Petersburg sometime this year.

The theater will feature films on a 64-foot cinema screen for viewers to watch from the comfort of their vehicles, and 179 parking spots at 2100 3rd Ave. S. “We are very much looking forward to bringing our unique cinematic drive-In experience to St. Pete and are currently working with the city and the amazing landlords at Place Projects to bring this to fruition as soon as possible,” said Rooftop Cinema Club founder Gerry Cottle.

Place Projects, a real estate company that owns several Bay Area big businesses, including Tampa’s Armature Works, retains the land where the drive-in will eventually open. The franchise has screens in New York City, Los Angeles, Houston and more.
