Law By Day, Fire By Night Stetson Law student Edson Abadia Jr. has been learning circus arts for three years. But, it wasn’t until he moved from Daytona to St. Petersburg that he began performing seriously as a fire dancer.

In 2020, Abadia’s performances were mostly from the wild world of the sidewalk.

“I started by busking, which is where you perform on the side of the street and audience members give you tips,” Abadia explained. “St. Pete has a lively fire community, so when I moved here in 2020, I began to meet all of these talented performers.”

Learning fiery choreography and safety propelled the law student into “circus life” quickly.

“I’m a dancer,” Abadia said. “Fire performance allowed me to share dance and movement with a crowd in an entirely different way.”

After joining the local troupe, Underground Cirque, Abadia began performing both as part of a team and alone for various St. Petersburg-area events –

voices In Favor of Water Rate Restructuring Dear Editor: So glad to read in the Gabber that, finally, Gulfport City Council is addressing a change in the payment rate for water use to a fairer, more equitable structure. No more 2,000 gallon per month minimum charge; instead, charges to be based on actual volume of use. Elderly folks and/or those living alone rarely reach half of that minimum usage.

I speak for many of us who avidly and responsibly conserve water, who cringe at seeing water sprinklers on in the rain, and who are tired of subsidizing wasteful, unnecessary water consumption. As a matter of fact, I for one, would be satisfied with just one combined garbage/recycling pickup per week, plus the weekly yard waste pickup. I compost, recycle and don’t need two garbage pickups. Is there a restructuring app for that?

A corrective adjustment of water rate charges is long overdue. Get it done. It’s about time! – Jude Bagatti

The Gabber Needs to Be Better Dear Editor: I have been a resident of Gulfport for two years. I was shocked at the decision of the Gabber to publish a vile letter calling for the removal of Gulfport’s Chief of Police because of his per-

sonal health situation.

I have never met the chief, but I have had the unfortunate need to interface three times in two years with his police force (two car break ins, once as a witness to a car jacking!). The officers were polite, professional and concerned about all situations. The chief should be applauded for managing an effective team that secures the peaceful environment we all enjoy.

The letter published calling for the removal of the chief due to vaccination status was absurd, defamatory and divisive to the community.

The tone and content was unacceptable to rational discourse on the subject of vaccinations. No one can claim absolute knowledge about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, both in the short and long term. Yet, it seems there are those among us (the vaccinated Karen) who feel the need to hector others who chose another path in their own lives.

The manufacturers of the vaccine have always stated the therapy would only lessen symptoms and hopefully prevent excessive deaths from COVID-19, not absolutely prevent the disease from manifesting in the vaccinated. Those claiming that 100 percent vaccination would eradicate the disease are incorrect. It is a known scientific fact that all viruses mutate, how and why are unknown to all. To claim a COVID-19 mutation is the fault of the unvaccinated is ludicrous.

Anyone who demands a competent professional in a vital public safety position be removed because of they don’t agree with a personal health decision is a dolt. For a supposed “neutral” editorial board to publish a letter from a dolt that labels the chief of police an extremist, is an unethical action that fosters division in the community. No one should have their private health information speculated about in a community newspaper!

No one should have their career threatened because others disagree with their health care decisions! The Story of Pinellas County School Integration A nine-part series exclusive to the Gabber

Gordon Young walked onto a crowded, tense campus as Boca Ciega High’s principal in the fall of 1968. Nearly 2,000 students attended Bogie, including less than 100 Black students. Before the end of the year, Gulfport and the sheriff’s department dispatched riot police to the campus and adjacent areas after hearing rumors of racial disturbances.

Conditions deteriorated at the end of April 1969, with reports of students and non-students roaming the campus in search of a fight. Isolated incidents instilled fear as more than 20% of the student body stayed home, and Black parents – many of them from Jordan Park – launched a boycott.

Green and the Swann Song of Segregation During the late 1960s, urban districts throughout the South used two strategies to forestall widespread, court-mandated desegregation. They either zoned a few token students of a different race to other schools to break the color barrier, or created so-called “freedom of choice” plans that offered parents flexibility to select schools within certain clusters or assigned zones. The net effect of these strategies was minimal.

The U.S. Supreme Court addressed these tactics in its 1968 Green v. New Kent County School Board decision. Moving beyond the 1954 Brown verdict that had declared “separate but equal” facilities inherently unconstitutional, Green proclaimed that districts had to look at additional issues other than pupil assignment to end dual schools.

Beyond attendance zones, Justices added other metrics that educators knew as “Green factors.”

These included enrollment trends, the composition of faculty and staff, availability of extracurricular activities and the relative condition of facilities. These broader measures would henceforth be used to determine whether a district remained dual in structure or had truly reached what the court called “unitary status.”

Federal Judge Joseph Lieb ordered a revised desegregation plan that met the “Green factors” in March 1969. The plan he approved in August 1969 did not please James Sanderlin, the NAACP attorney who launched the Bradley lawsuit in 1964 because it kept nearly two-thirds of the county’s Black students in heavily segregated schools. Sanderlin appealed Lieb’s order to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, and won.

The Fifth Circuit modified Bradley in July 1970. Through clustering

and new attendance zones, the judges had desegregated all public schools except Jordan, Melrose and Perkins elementary schools in St. Petersburg.

Sensing disaffection among many constituents who disliked desegregation, Governor Claude Kirk decided to step up his attacks against any judicial decrees that mandated busing. Coincidentally, the governor many ridiculed as “Claudius Maximus” also spent much of 1970 campaigning for a second term in the governor’s mansion.

Kirk courted votes by challenging court orders. When Volusia County on Florida’s east coast felt federal pressure to comply with a busing mandate in February 1970, Kirk called Vice President Spiro Agnew to ask that he and President Richard Nixon withhold funds for busing.

After Manatee County officials began to follow an order by Judge Lieb, Kirk interposed himself into

this quandary by temporarily taking control of this district on April 5, 1970. Sixty state police officials, some in riot gear, escorted Kirk to Bradenton. The governor spent a week sitting in the superintendent’s office with armed highway patrol officers keeping federal marshals from serving him contempt of court citations before he relented.

Whites who opposed desegregation cheered these efforts. A local group known as United Residents of Pinellas (URP) formed in 1970 to protest busing. Meanwhile, an incident during the first weekend of May 1970 ransacked Bogie’s campus. Burglars kicked open doors and broke windows throughout the open-air classroom wings, vandalized the athletic field house and trashed the kitchen and cafeteria.

The pillagers commandeered crowbars from shop classrooms, entered Principal Gordan Young’s office and punched a hole in the wall to gain access to and break into the school’s safe. Pirate Pride dipped to a new low as news of the plunder spread throughout the community.

A few months later, a different outburst happened a few miles to the east. Confirming the long-held fears of the Black community, district officials had decided to shutter Gibbs High. Clamor by Sanderlin and other Black residents forced the school board’s hand, as officials decided on August 12, 1970 to reopen the facility as Gibbs Comprehensive High School.

EPIC Opens Sexual Health Center in St. Petersburg More sexual health conversations are finding their way to St. Petersburg thanks to Empath Partners in Care’s (EPIC) new sexual health building at 300 49th St. S. Since the center opened publicly on Thursday, July 8, walk-ins can gain access to rapid STD testing and treatment, sexual health information, PREP, emergency contraceptives and more. EPIC hosted an official ribbon-cutting, attended by Florida Representative Charlie Crist, on Thursday, July 22.

“This is a sex-positive space for anyone,” said Joy Winheim, the executive director of EPIC. “We don’t care what you’re doing, we just want you to do it safely.”

The center also makes free STD preventatives like condoms and dental dams readily available, displayed at the front desk like breath mints.

The 49th Street building is a renovated 1,800-square-foot space, but for its visitors, it could be the difference between a health emergency and wellness.

The idea is sex positivity, with an emphasis on safety.

“Come to us if you’ve had an unplanned sexual encounter, or you just need some education,” Winheim said. “The goal is to get people through the door.”

The cost for treatment operates on a sliding scale and the center accepts insurance and cash, but free services are not an option – yet.

“We would love to do it for free, but we are not recognized for that,” the executive director said. “We’re in the process of applying for grants.”

The center is EPIC’s first standalone health center, with the main medical provider at 1st Ave. S. The organization opened a similar treatment center in Tampa on August 1.

Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center Foundation Treasurer Gail Gravell and one of the directors, Larry Kennedy, stand with boxes of Hurricane Emergency Kits for qualified, low-income Gulfport seniors. There were 32 kits at the initial distribution on July 22 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Catherine Hickman Theater, but organizers plan to distribute 100 total. The kits are funded by a $5,000 grant from the Senior Citizens Services at the Pinellas Community Foundation. Gecko Crawl on Saturday, August 14 will unfold at drinking establishments along Gulfport’s Waterfront District from 4 to 9 p.m. with an after-party at O’Maddy’s at 9:30 p.m.

The sunset event is essentially a giant pub crawl poker game where crawlers wander to various Gulfport restaurants and bars – Caddy’s, Isabelle’s Restaurant, Neptune Grille and more – to imbibe and collect poker cards.

Gulfport Woman Donates Car to Benefit Senior Center Foundation When Barbara Dye decided that the Gulfport Senior Center Foundation could make better use of her car, she donated her 2001 maroon Buick sedan on Tuesday, July 20.

“I came to the conclusion to donate it because I saw the article in the Gabber about it and I didn’t know that the [Senior Center] Foundation did that,” Dye said. “I thought this would be easier than putting an ad in the paper.”

Dye called Amy Oatley, the office manager at the foundation, and was directed to the organization that handles the towing and donations, Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS).

CARS is a nonprofit service that sells the donated cars and provides a deductible tax receipt back to the donor. According to Dye, the entire process was simple.

St. Pete Beach Has a New App to Tackle Beach Parking Good news for folks who have trouble parking in Pass-a-Grille.

Conure, a smart cities company, has collaborated with St. Pete Beach to create ParkSmartSPB, a parking app and website that uses sensors to detect and provide live feed of parking availability on Pass-a-Grille beach. The system is part of St. Pete Beach’s Strategic Plan (Vision 2030). One of the main goals is to lead the way with technology.

“The initiative was fueled by the city’s desire to provide better information to the public regarding parking availability within the city, and as a goal to make the parking experience easier for visitors in the city,” Michelle Gonzales, director of Community Development for the City of St. Pete Beach, said.

Due to the limited number of entrances and exits, Pass-a-Grille is the guinea pig for the new system.

“We also hope that with this new technology better parking compliance is achieved since there is real time parking information – people can easily locate available space and not park on the residential streets,” Gonzales said.

Circular black sensors dot the ground, one per parking spot.

Currently, the app details how many spots are available in four locations: 9th Avenue, Gulf Way South, Pass-a-Grille Way and Gulf Way North.

“As soon as the parking app gains some traction, we’re hoping to see help with the traffic flow,” St. Pete Beach’s Public Information Office Sarah Laracuente said.

If Pass-a-Grille is full, Laracuente hopes that will inspire beach-goers to visit other local beach spots.

“Currently, we are piloting this technology for a year and will see how the technology has been working in the city prior to expanding it to another beach area.

crime Two-Vehicle Crash with Injuries Knocks Out Power in Gulfport

Bounds had no known injuries, according to police, and remained stationary on 49th Street.

The street marks a boundary between Gulfport and St. Petersburg, and first responders from St. Petersburg were first on the scene.

“St. Pete Police held down the scene until Gulfport arrived,” said St. Petersburg Police Spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez.

Following the crash, power outages were reported from at least 15th Avenue South to 5th Avenue South, as well as on Gulfport Boulevard for hours on Tuesday night. Duke Energy responded to restore power and replace the downed lines shortly after the accident.

The investigation remains ongoing.

A two-car crash left a white BMW overturned with both driver and passenger injured after colliding with another vehicle and several power poles at 6:07 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, near the Gulfport Neighborhood Center.

According to the Gulfport Police Department, a 2006 BMW driven by Queen Clark, 21, hit a 2018 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Alex Bounds, 28, while traveling southbound on 49th Street. The Elantra was attempting to make a left turn onto 15th Avenue South.

“The BMW, the at-fault vehicle here, was traveling at an extreme rate of speed,” GPPD Public Information Officer Thomas Woodman.

Clark and a juvenile passenger flipped, hit Gulfport power poles and stopped upside down next to a building with the vehicle wrapped in live power lines.

Body of Liveaboard Found Near Mariner’s Cove in Gulfport

Gulfport Police Department recovered the body of 31-year-old man on Monday, August 2 on the shore of Mariner’s Cove Marina, 5018 31st Ave. S. Police identified the body as Kyle Kramer, and reported there was no visible trauma to the body after being dispatched on scene at 3:14 p.m.

“He was known to reside on a vessel in Boca Ciega Bay,” Gulfport Public Information Officer Sergeant Thomas Woodman told the Gabber on Wednesday, August 3 According to Woodman, Kramer’s boat is still currently on the water.

Next of kin have been notified and police are awaiting a final cause of death from the medical examiner’s office.

most recently for Gulfport’s First Friday Art Walk, where he last performed for the Body Beautiful event on July 2 with his partner, Michael Knapp.

“So much of what I do are illusions of danger that when done safely and properly can really look like magic,” Abadia said. “The most interesting part is the science behind the fire.”

His act, which includes much acrobatic balancing over an open flame, can look precarious, but with burn-resistant gear and fire safety personnel nearby, Abadia says it’s rare that performers suffer injury.

Perhaps what shocks his audience most is Abadia’s Stetson status, where he is currently studying law and a part of Lambda Legal Society at Stetson University College of Law. “It often does surprise people, but I find my two passions to be more connected than you may think,” Abadia said. “Fire performance, much like the law, is an art form.”

With a 2022 graduation date, the performer plans to continue supporting the art form he loves while practicing law.

“Circus arts have provided a safe space for me to explore my movement and introduced me to an amazing community,” Abadia said. “After I graduate, I plan to give back to this community by contributing to local performers, troupes and spaces that keep the circus alive.”

Gulfport Tattoo Artist Turns Old Car into Driveable Art

Kentucky native Tate Leigh turned her 2007 Kia Spectra into an upcycled “time machine pirate ship.”

When she was 17 years old living in Kentucky, Tate Leigh couldn’t have imagined her 2007 Kia Spectra would ultimately become a wooden, recycled pirate ship filled with “Easter eggs” that point to a time traveling storyline.

“I guess that’s just my path,” Leigh said.

Once the A/C went out on the aging vehicle mid-pandemic – amongst other issues – it was either scrap metal or an art installation.

“I called up a friend and asked him if he wanted to build an art car,” Leigh said. “Obviously we didn’t have a lot going on at the time.”

She moved to St. Petersburg four years ago from Kentucky, and after a lifetime of creating art from the scrap yard on her childhood home’s property, Leigh’s learned how to wield tools.

“On the hobby farm I grew up on there wasn’t a lot to do, so I was always building clubhouses and things,” Leigh said.

With help from Ian Tuma, Leigh’s friend and owner of art production company Lost Creations, the pirate ship came alive with a skeleton of spare wood from alleyways, fence postings and deck scraps.

Time-traveling clues, like a time-log filled diary from the captain and a hidden treasure chest, add character amongst practicalities like a hangout “deck” in the trunk. The project is constantly being recreated, and Leigh is in the process of adding a boat cleat.

“I like to make things that remind adults to play,” Leigh said.

Out to Sea On Friday, July 10, the junker-turned-ship made its first art show debut at Coastal Creative’s female-curated and created exhibit, We Are Feminine at the two-day pop-up gallery on 2201 1st Ave. S. How did the vehicle get to Coastal? Slowly.

“It does drive, and sometimes we just coast down the street because it brings people joy,” Leigh said. “At the show, a lot of people looked at it, but were uncomfortable touching it or getting into it – but that’s what it’s there for.”

Aside from showing at some local music events, the pirate ship is only recently attending shows and festivals.

“The main goal right now is getting the word out that it exists,” Leigh said. “I made it for people to enjoy.”

Leigh’s main gig is working as a tattoo artist in a private space at Above Alpha Tattooing on 5702 Gulfport Blvd. S., but she plans to keep creating.

Good News: This Invasive Predator Makes a Delicious Meal As Floridians, we know about the invasive Burmese pythons that slink through the marshy Everglades or the non-native melaleuca trees that shade out indigenous plants to extinction. But there’s another creature wreaking environmental havoc throughout the Gulf of Mexico and beyond: lionfish, with red zebra-striped skin and whimsical, but venomous spines. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the voracious lionfish have threatened native reefs around Florida since the early 2000s and they are now rampantly invading as far north as Pensacola and Apalachicola. Not only are lionfish difficult to eliminate, but our native fish are suffering from intense competition.

When we chatted about ways Floridians can help curb the lionfish population, Mora said, “It would be great if more restaurants served it…. Grilling it whole with the spines makes for a really nice presentation. But my favorite way to eat it is fried.”

I did exactly that. Mora hooked me up with glistening, fresh lionfish that was caught less than 24 hours ago. As he advised, I grilled a whole fish to see the stunning presentation for myself. I also deep fried a smaller, whole fish in a standard flour-egg-fry mix to compare.

But my favorite way to eat these sea invaders is to pan sear them for a good crust and serve over creamy risotto with my Key lime beurre blanc. This recipe will not disappoint and you can relax with a glass of sauvignon blanc knowing you helped save Florida marine life.
