Kicking Butts

Currently, three Tampa Bay beach communities in South Pinellas County are considering banning cigarette smoking and vaping on public beaches. St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, and Madeira Beach are all working on ordinances that would ban smoking and vaping on public beaches beginning sometime at the

end of 2023. However, it is not only about the smoking.

It’s About the Litter

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) cigarette butts have become

a major problem for our environment. Experts report that somewhere between four trillion and five trillion cigarette butts get disposed of outdoors every year in the U.S.

They are not biodegradable and contain toxic chemicals along with heavy metals.

Building Developments

If you are like me, you’re a transplant. I grew up in Georgia and then lived 20+ years in Miami. Until my best friend discovered this great little secret of Gulfport. I came to visit... and I was sold. I was sold on the friendly people and especially the live music that the bars and restaurants have in downtown Gulfport.

Fast forward to today... we all think that the former Caddy’s building is jinxed. Why can’t anything last there? It is the best location in town. I’m not a business-minded person but wouldn’t it be great if we could come together as a community and create a wonderful space in the empty lot beside Hurricane Eddy’s all the way to the corner of Beach and Shore? I know developers have been trying to come up with a great idea but we don’t want to “Miami” our beloved Gulfport. (Sorry, not sorry.)

I’m not even sure if it’s been done before but if we raised money to invest in the development and were then able to see a return

on our investment... for years to come. We could have a board to approve the design, voted on by those who invest, before getting approved by the City, of course. We love our Gulfport and if we were all vested in what gets built in this prime location, I believe we would see an even greater addition of live music and in turn more money and visitors to support for our other local businesses. (Not too many to ruin our best kept secret.) —Janna Vick, Gulfport

Remembering the 1993 Tampa Bay Oil Spill Thirty Years Ago, Oil Ruined Shorelines

Published as part of a March 2000 draft report from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this map shows the approximate area where the worst effects of the spill took place in August 1993. Many interior portions of Boca Ciega Bay, including Clam Bayou and Cross Bayou, also experienced residual effects from the spill.

This view of the Gulf Pier at Fort De Soto Park looks southeast toward the mouth of Tampa Bay near the site of the oil spill in 1993. This area along Mullet Key, part of the park, as well as Egmont Key, immediately experienced the effects of the oil spill. Shifting tides and winds took much of the oil slick offshore for the next four days, giving teams an opportunity to address damage at Fort De Soto and nearby keys. Shipping closures and restrictions limited access to Tampa Bay and Boca Ciega Bay soon after the spill.

Thirty years ago, globs of oil ruined the shoreline during an otherwise beautiful afternoon along Redington Beach. Early on the morning of Aug. 10, 1993, two tanker barges — the Bouchard 155 and Ocean 255 — had a collision with the freighter Balsa 37 near Mullet Key. A fire immediately began on the Ocean 255 as it spilled 32,000 gallons of jet fuel. Approximately 300,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled from the other tanker. Less than a week later, oil covered portions of the lower Pinellas Gulf Beaches.

A fire immediately began on the Ocean 255 as it spilled 32,000

gallons of jet fuel. Approximately 300,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled from the other tanker. Less than a week later, oil covered portions of the lower Pinellas Gulf Beaches.

Shipping closures and restrictions limited access to Tampa Bay and Boca Ciega Bay soon after the spill. Although nobody experienced serious injury as a result of this colli-

sion, local wildlife, coastal plants, and the Pinellas beaches suffered after a change in winds and tidal currents.

On Aug. 14 and 15, 1993, oil began floating toward the shoreline between St. Pete Beach and Redington Shores. This flow also threatened estuaries within Boca Ciega Bay as oil entered John’s Pass.

This postcard view shows John’s Pass from the Madeira Beach side as it appeared a few years before the spill. The twin 1971 spans of the old bridge appear in the background. HERITAGE VILLAGE

Oil Spill continued from page 5

Heavy patches of oil spread along the beaches north of John’s Pass. Tidal currents pushed oil into northern parts of Madeira Beach, as well as the Redington Beaches. As tide waters receded, thick masses of oil remained on the sand. Although closer to the origin of the spill, many gulfside portions of Treasure Island received less oil than parts of Redington Beach, shown here.

Concern for local wildlife became a top priority. Vivid memories of the ecological damage resulting from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska, were on the minds of many. That tragedy led to the spilling of more than 10 million gallons of crude oil and prompted the passage of the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990. The 1993 Tampa Bay oil spill was the first major event after that act’s passage. Unlike in Alaska, quick action and fortunate water currents after the initial collision allowed for the survival of more than 80 percent of the oil-soaked birds that rescuers captured and cleaned.

As work continued to restore the coastline in areas such as St. Pete Beach, shown here, federal and state authorities sought accountability from the tanker owners. Parties reached an $8 million settlement with the vessel operators in 1999. Funds allowed for beach restoration efforts, including the rehabilitation of salt marshes. Affected communities also improved beach access. For example, the Town of Redington Beach created boardwalks at beach entryways to promote public access to its sandy shores.

A South African University estimates the number worldwide is closer to 6 trillion discarded cigarette butts.

Cigarette Butts Contaminate — A Plague on the Beaches

The contaminants? There are more than a dozen. The first of which is cellulose acetate. This is a stubborn non-biodegradable plastic, which can take from five to 10 years to decompose in the oceans or on land. Meanwhile, the cellulose acetate carries the rest of the contaminants to the land, water supply, and the animal population in every ecosystem.

Chemicals found in cigarette butts include non-biodegradables like arsenic, formaldehyde, nicotine, chromium, cadmium, lead, copper, and other heavy metals. Many, separately, are carcinogens in humans and all may be deadly to fish, birds, and turtles.

“These chemicals can kill nearly every species in our delicate ecosystems,” says scientist William Hanson, formerly of The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI).

Reporter’s Note: A close relation and former Navy sailor describes the process of field-stripping a cig -

arette: “You roll the tobacco out of the cigarette and stick the filter in your pocket for later disposal. (Just make sure it’s out, or your pants will catch fire.)”  –T. Prindle, former U.S. Navy, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate.

Non-Biodegradable and Deadly

The Pinellas County beach communities spend tens of thousands of dollars every year trying to “clean up” the beaches. Volunteers go out, wear surgical gloves, and help collect cigarette butts and discarded vaping cartridges. All this in the interest of saving local beaches, waters, and wildlife from the contamination caused by this litter.

“We need to be more aware of the litter on the beach and better stewards of our environment,” says Indian Rocks Beach Mayor Cookie Kennedy. “My parents used to say to my brothers and me, ‘Don’t be a ‘Litter Bug’.”

“We don’t expect that a $500 fine alone will deter smokers from lighting up,” says St. Pete Beach Vice Mayor Mark Grill. “We expect people to take personal responsibility for disposing of their cigarette butts.”

The hope is that an informational campaign will help the public understand the need to stop littering the

beaches and roads with cigarettes of any kind.

Back in the ‘60s

In America, during the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, there were some memorable public service ad campaigns designed to instill personal responsibility in Americans.

Today, many public school children circa the ‘60s remember those campaigns: “Don’t be a Litter Bug” and “Give a Hoot; Don’t Pollute” to name just a few. Remember “The Crying Indian” Iron Eyes Cody TV commercial?

All were designed by the Keep America Beautiful ad campaign (which still exists today.) The campaign strove to instill this personal responsibility in everyone, from school children to seniors. People started to think twice before they tossed that gum wrapper out the car window.

Save Our Beaches, Water Supply, and Wildlife

Now, some Tampa Bay Beaches in Pinellas County ask for your help in curbing pollution of our natural resources.  They want you to not dispose of your cigarette butts or vaping containers outdoors. It does more harm than some realize.

Gulfport’s Harmonica Man Meet T.C. Carr

“All my absolute firsts in life, whatever you can imagine them to be, were in Gulfport,” said T.C. Carr, Gulfport’s own harmonica man.

He caught his first fish at the pier near the Gulfport Casino. He lost his first fishing net, a gift from his grandfather, after it got stuck on an old refrigerator in Boca Ciega Bay. His first boat, first truck, first arrest, and first joint; all in Gulfport.

These are the kinds of firsts that you would have growing up in 1960s Gulfport.

“It was sort of a redneck fishing village,” T.C. said. “Not like, redneck with a capital R, but it was rough.”

The people in the town, as T.C. tells it, “were a hard-working, hard-drinking, low income, very accepting bunch of salty people.”

T.C. hung out with anyone in town who wasn’t fighting, drinking, fishing, or gambling.

“Misfits and bohemians and nice colorful people that were friendly and had a good time,” he called them.

And That’s Where Another First Happened:

“That’s when I first started listening to the blues,” he said.

He bought his first harmonica in Gulfport and played for the first time on Williams Pier.

“I couldn’t put it down; I played until almost my lips bled,” he said. “It was more a voice, an expression of what needed to come out of me. I needed that, I guess.”

Within six months, he was in his first blues band. They were Pete Butterfly’s All Stars (a riff off Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band) and their first gig was at The Snack Bar.

The Snack Bar is now half of O’Maddy’s downtown. His first boat, truck, and net are long gone, as is much of the fishing culture of Gulfport. The Fill, which was a big plot of sand and grass where his misfits and bohemians used to hang out, is now Town Shores. The

net ban decimated the fishing industry in town. T.C.’s redneck fishing village is gone.

“Are things the same? No, not anywhere near it,” T.C. says.

“Sure I like it, I mean, did I like the old one, yeah. I liked it better. The freedom and the closeness with the friends I had here,” he said, “But change is the one constant in life, might as well get used to it.”

A Learned Extrovert

T.C. calls himself a shy person, despite being a career performer.

He thinks of the more public side of performing as a skill that he had to learn.

“It was a part of me but it had to grow,” he said.

When he started in music, T.C. hid behind his instrument and sang backup, not wanting the limelight. But his talent was undeniable. Plus, he didn’t have some of the personality traits that other musicians of the time had, like being late, or drunk, or arrested — which made him bookable.

“I kind of fell into being the front man. And as a harmonica player, you better sing if you want to

8 thegabber.com | August 17, 2023 - August 23, 2023
T.C. Carr playing harmonica outside the Gulfport Casino. ETHAN PERELSTEIN

keep working,” he said. “I arise to the occasion, and do it, and love it, and people think I’m good at it, but I always have to work at it. Even before a gig, I think to myself ‘Can I do this again?’ Yeah, I can.”

The Tampa Tribune called T.C. Carr the best harmonica player in the Tampa Bay Area. He’s the second of only two people in 30 years to give an encore performance at the Florida Folk Festival. The man is a master of his craft.

When he plays, he cradles the harmonica in both hands in front of his mouth, the brim of his hat and his sunglasses covering what’s left of his face. He hunches over, crosses his legs, and so casually blows the most delightfully playful trilling of blues through the reeds.

Gulfport’s Harmonica Man

Playing the harmonica is hard. If you want to play only one note, you need to focus your breath through only one reed. For chords and harmonies, you blow out the side of your mouth while playing other notes in the middle.  You have to learn techniques like overblowing, underblowing, inhaling notes, bending, and vibrato.

“It’s very hard physically, and I love that about it. It takes effort to play,” T.C. said.

“It absolutely has saved my life three or four times. I’ve had severe pneumonia, I drowned, and because my lungs are so strong and because I used the harmonica to rehabilitate myself, I survived. It really has saved my life.”

In 2019, after surviving drowning, pneumonia, and his third heart attack, T.C. told the St. Pete Catalyst “I‘m here for a reason. I don’t know what it is. But I’m looking.”

Four years later, he said “timing will tell me if and when.”

He does know what, however.

“The old cracker that I am, one of the things that bothers me deeply is racism. I want to address that before I die if possible,” he said, adding:

“I would like to be able to heal the world a little bit if I can.”

Aug. 8 Treasure Island City Council

The roll call for the city commission meeting on Aug. 8 included Commissioners Deb Toth, John Doctor, Beth Wetzel and Mayor Tyler Payne. The council excused Vice Mayor Saleene Partridge from the proceedings.

30 Years’ Service to the City

First on the agenda was a Recognition Award for Jason Howard, a firefighter/paramedic who has served the City of Treasure Island for the past 30 years.

Fire Chief Trip Barrs introduced Howard as “no stranger to public service since he is the son of a retired police officer.”

Howard started as a service worker in the public works department in 1993. In 1999, he became

a firefighter/EMT and received his paramedic certification in 2004. Since then, he is now certified in boat operations and has become a fire safety inspector, fire safety instructor, and fire safety officer.

“It’s not a very common story to hear of someone coming from public works and moving into public safety, so that’s a really neat story,” said Payne. “Congratulations on your very long tenured service to the city.”

Treasure Islettes — Community Assistance for 68 Years

Next up, President of the Treasure Islettes Diana Krabel wanted to recognize three fellow Islettes as tireless workers and “very helpful to the organization.”

The Islettes is a group of residents and T.I./Mad Beach Chamber members who offer civic, social, and community assistance. This group has been in existence for the past 68 years.

The Treasure Islettes donate time, energy, and funds to various community efforts and even helped build the Treasure Island Community Center.

The commission approved various projects and presentations. This included a Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant, a 2022 comprehensive annual financial report, and a people’s gas franchise agreement.

No Smoking or Vaping on Public Beaches and Parks

Next came the first reading of Ordinance 2023-10, a smoking and vaping ban on public beaches and in parks. The city attorney read the ordinance. Barrs explained that “the intent of this is to limit litter.” Clearwater and St. Petersburg adopted this same ordinance. It has the same intent as the one adopted by Pinellas County.

The City decided to allow people to smoke in the parking lots at the beaches or parks, Barrs further explained. They must dispose the cigarettes or vaping cartridges in designated containers.

Thanking the Butt Patrol

“I would like to thank Cory Evans and Lou Evans for all their hard work as the ‘Butt Patrol’,” Doctor said.

This husband and wife team help with beach clean-up on a regular basis. According to research and Payne’s own accounting, cigarette butts represent the largest percentage of litter on the beaches.

“The Florida League of Cities (FLC) advocated for this,” [Ordinance 2023-10] said Payne. “There were public hearings in Tallahassee and everyone involved agreed that this ordinance will have a tremendous impact.”

Trepidation Over Backlash or Butt-lash?

When Payne asked for public comment, resident Patty Knap stood at the podium and expressed her positivity.

“I am thrilled about cigarettes going off the beach,” she said.

She went on to caution about the opposition to this proposed ordinance.

Knap said that folks who illegally brought their off-leash dogs to the beach at night were “turning residents into policemen.”

She said she sees these folks and others on the beaches who are defiant about government “infringing on their freedoms. This could potentially be a problem,” she said.

“I am still concerned,” said Knap.

The commission voted 4-0 in favor of the ordinance. There will be a second and final reading of Ordinance 2023-10 at the next meeting of the commission.

Slanders in Sandals Aug. 9 Madeira Beach City Commission Meeting

The Madeira Beach City Commission meeting on Aug. 9 presented more conflicts and incidents of possible slander than the clash between an umpire and an enraged batter.

All seemed peaceful. Then, Mayor Jim Rostek asked for participation from the citizens.

Residents Voice Opinions

ers reach out to residents about the Activities Center?” She was assured by Commissioner Eddie McGeehan of District III that he was happy to answer her questions via email.

At the last meeting (July 26) the main issue was whether or not the City of Madeira Beach wished the interim City Attorney Thomas Trask to continue in his role as the Madeira Beach city attorney.

City Manager Robin Gomez posted an Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a new city attorney on two websites. Only two attorneys responded to the RFQ. At that time, many residents and some commissioners expressed an interest in seeking more applicants for the position.

Fast-forward to the Aug. 9 Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting, when the current interim city attorney gave the invocation before the Pledge of Allegiance. Perhaps the battle is over, (this reporter thought).

The first resident was Thomas Whally. He expressed dissatisfaction with only two responses to the RFQ for the city attorney position. He also stated that he believed Trask and his firm had engaged in “unethical conduct” in some of their earlier legal representation of cities like Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, North Redington Beach, or Oldsmar. In addition, Whally expressed his opinion that in not answering the mayor’s questions in the prior commission meeting, Trask exhibited “insubordination.” Therefore, he should be disqualified from applying, Whally said.

The gentleman finished his comments by requesting that the City re-issue the RFQ.

Next, Nancy Bryner came up and said she had lived in Madeira Beach for 40 years. She was curious:  “by what method did the commission-

Former Mayor Speaks Out

Next, former Madeira Beach Mayor John Hendricks approached the podium and spoke loudly and clearly. Hendricks began by saying that he “really didn’t want to get up here tonight”.

Then, the retired mayor indicated that interim attorney Trask ran the ethics seminar that commissioners were required to attend. “Trask Daigneault … one of the most highly respected firms in the state of Florida. So, I hate seeing their firm beaten up on,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks continued by making the point that pending litigation cannot be discussed at commission meetings. Hence, he said, Trask could not answer Rostek’s question in the previous meeting.

Ask Toffer Gardening in Florida Heat

Gardening in Florida heat can prove troublesome — if you don’t know what steps to take. Toffer Ross has some tips to keep gardeners cool. Well, cooler. She also has some suggestions on how to eat two summer fruits you may have in your garden.

I know your attention span is short. The heat does that to us. So I’m giving you a few topics so you can take a break to refocus between them.

How Do You Take This Heat!?

Start consuming electrolyte-enhanced fluids an hour before you head out. I cut my Gatorade 50/50 with soda water, but a pinch of salt added to a glass of hose water is easy. Adding a slice of ginger or a piece of cut watermelon will also give you what you need. One landscaper I knew ate one or two potato chips every time he stopped for a drink.

Stop every 15 minutes for a water break. Drink as much as your body wants, then stop. Stop every half hour and go into the air conditioning. Doing so will not ruin your acclimatization. It will cool your system so that you can go back out to do more. Move slow and steady. Don’t set the self-propelled mower on “jackrabbit” to get your work-

out. Think “tortoise.”

Even if you’ve been fine in the past, unless you are a professional do not work outdoors between noon and 5 p.m . It’s nothing like it used to be, and it totally defies description. Try to do what you need to do out there between 7 and 8 (a.m. and p.m.) August is historically akin to hell. September’s not much better. October brings hope.

Mango!

I’ve never seen so many mango fruit in the Tampa Bay area. Never. They are everywhere. And, as you may have discovered, they are difficult to cut up. What’s up with that seed? They are worth the carving and associated mess, however. My favorite use is to put long strips into a slow cooker with a can of coconut milk and chicken thighs. Or to put little butchered pieces into a vat of plain yogurt. Nom nom.

Avocado?

I never heard this word until I was 11 and saw my first specimen in a Navy commissary in Japan. Alligator pear, that’s what my Grandma called them. Florida avocados are lower in fat, smooth skinned, and can weigh up to four times more than the nubby little Haas variety. I pick them, cut them in half and pour tarragon vinegar into the recession where the seed was and I eat it with a spoon. It’s poor person protein. (It makes your fur shiny, too.)

In summary, drink your hose water, carry a sharp knife for your mango and avocado carving, worship the air conditioner, and buy a bag of chips. Slow down, OK? Sloth is a spirit animal, not a deadly sin.

Watch Out For Mail Theft Police Say Stop Using Freestanding Mailboxes

Police have asked Pinellas residents to temporarily stop using freestanding USPS mailboxes, citing mail theft from these boxes.

Following a report of stolen mail from a Gulfport area resident, Gulfport police told The Gabber Newspaper they’d contacted the U.S. Postal Service and started an investigation. Law enforcement agencies believe the theft extends well beyond Gulfport.

While neither agency disclosed details, they ask residents refrain from using the standalone blue mailboxes. Police encourage residents to either use their personal mailboxes or bring mail inside a post office during operating hours.

People who have recently mailed something from one of these blue boxes should check with the intended recipient to ensure the mail reached its intended destination.

Anyone who believes they may have had mail stolen should report mail theft to the USPS as well as their local police department.

Slander continued from page 12

“I tried to have a meeting with our mayor, a private meeting,” Hendricks said, “to go over some things. I invited him to my house because I wanted it to be confidential. He refused to do that, so here we are.”

Former Mayor Lectures Current Mayor

“Last meeting you read emails … from two individuals. I would hope you are going to read an email tonight that you received. Otherwise, you are discriminating against a prior commissioner. I had a printout made of something that is the City’s policy,” Hendricks said. “We read emails during COVID …That’s something we don’t do [reading emails] … if you want to make a comment, come on up and make one.”

Retired Mayor Hendricks then went on to dispute facts contained in the two emails that Rostek previously read. Hendricks referred to an email from Kenneth Weiss and proclaimed that Weiss was the attorney for Bill Gay who had “sued the City of Madeira Beach.” Hendricks then said about Weiss, “he’s a liar.” His next admonishment to Rostek was, “learn who you are sleeping with”.

More Lecturing and Opinion

He then diverged into, “What has Bill Karns done for this City? I will tell you Mr. Karns spent $1.2 million on ROC Park.” ROC Park is named for Bill Karns’s son. “He has done a ton of things for this city. He is here at every event, yet there are some of you I never see,” Hendricks said “yet you are supposed to be representing the City.”

“What has Bill Gay done for this City? He has fed off it. Some people think he’s a white knight. He’s not a white knight. He’s pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from this city,” Hendricks said, adding, “and yet you’re listening to him”.

The End of the Lecture

“Part of this job for all of you is building relationships … bringing

funding into this city and to make this a better city,” explained Hendricks. He went on to accuse what appeared to be anyone who was listening that they were not working on relationships … not bringing funding into the city.

“It’s well known that Mayor Rostek has quite a temper,” Hendricks said.

The former mayor then said that he had put in an open records request for a copy of Rostek’s personal phone and personal text messages.

“So by failing to disclose it, you are violating state law,” Hendricks said. “Thank you very much.”

Mayor Rostek’s Reply

“In regards to the meeting, I texted you back numerous times to meet in a public place,” explained Mayor Rostek. “The text messages that you sent did not indicate anything about City business.”

The former mayor came to the lectern, sweating and breathing hard, and appeared angry. He said, “No, I am going to speak. Of course it was City business; otherwise, I wouldn’t have been contacting you.”

Resuming the BOC Meeting

Four more citizens then stood at the podium and asked the BOC to re-issue the RFQ for a new city attorney.

There was a lengthy discussion about allowing residents to park in the Kitty and Tom Stuart Park parking lot next to Caddy’s. The BOC finally determined that there will be four parking spots for residents there. One will offer accessible parking.

Before some final agenda items that received 5-0 votes from the commissioners (Spring Games college softball for next year and health/dental premiums) there was a close vote on public usage of the City of Madeira Beach fitness center.

In a 3-2 vote, Commissioner David Tagliarini, Rostek, and McGeehan voted to open the City fitness center to the residents of Madeira Beach.

Indian Bistro, The Club at TI, and Yaki-Mono Stay Up-to-Date with Pinellas Businesses

Indian

In need of a new place for Indian eats? Indian Bistro is the newest and only Indian restaurant on St. Pete Beach. It is the sister restaurant to one of the oldest family-owned Indian restaurants in Clearwater.

The St. Pete Beach location specializes in contemporary Punjabi specialties and traditional Indian dishes. Choose from samosas, biryani, and authentic curry dishes cooked in Tandoori ovens.

The tikka masala is recommended or anything served with fresh-baked Naan. Indian Bistro invites you for lunch or dinner.

Yaki-Mono Japanese Kitchen is a new restaurant concept for St. Pete Beach. Consider it for lunch, take out, happy hour, or an early dinner. They are only open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and closed on Sundays.

“Yaki-mono is pleased to offer Japanese dishes with flair and distinction, prepared for your enjoyment,” the website states.

Their menu includes sakizuki (appetizers) like tuna tataki, ahi tuna avocado poke, shrimp tempura, or even harumaki (Japanese spring rolls).

Lunch specials include what they call a “Lunch Box,” which contains various selections of sushi, sashimi, and edamame house salad. Of course, udon noodles and Hibachi are lunch staples.

Say Goodbye to The Club at T.I.

On Aug. 14, The Club at Treasure Island shocked its customers with a message about the permanent closing of the business.

Patrons discovered this information after watching a slideshow of photos from pool parties at the club via Meta reels. “Kellerman’s Anthem” from  Dirty Dancing played over the farewell video. Interesting song choice for the post, but OK Gen X.

“Well friends, it’s been reelz [sic]. Thanks to all who came out and made our last day so awesome. The Club at Treasure Island is now permanently closed. It’s been our great pleasure to serve you,” the caption of the post stated.

The day before, Aug. 13, the Club posted a reel with a slideshow of photos. This caption said, “Come join in all the delicious fun!!!” followed by dates and times for musical entertainment for that weekend. The post reminded people it was “newly open to the public,” and tells people to invite their

“friends and coworkers and come be a part of all the fun!!!”

However, here we are: The business announced a permanent closing. The Gabber Newspaper attempted to call The Club to see if the phone message would have more information, but the phone rang and didn’t go to voice mail. No one answered.

The Lightning Thief Hits The Stage

Ghostlight Young Company’s Latest Production

Ghostlight Youth Company is a relatively new educational theatre program producing plays and musicals at the Catherine A. Hickman Theatre in Gulfport.

Their mission statement reads, “To grow and enrich the community theater community in the area.” The program is open to anyone ages ten and up who want to learn, explore, and develop their creative skills in a safe environment with a community theatre group.

Its current production is the musical The Lightning Thief. The book is by Joe Tracz, the music and lyrics are by Rob Rokicki. Rachel Fennell directed the musical with music direction by Rich Mutkoski. The production adapted from the award-winning young reader’s fantasy novel Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

This production’s cast is mostly pre-teen and teenage student actors, with a handful of adult actors. Most of the actors played multiple roles.

Percy Jackson

The story revolves around Percy Jackson, a teenage boy struggling to understand the world and fit in.

After some bizarre events while he and his class visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, his school expelled Percy. His mother makes the difficult decision to send Percy away to protect him from his abusive stepfather.

What follows is a fantastic journey of self-discovery for Percy. Not only does Percy discover that his friends and teachers are mythical creatures, but he discovers that he is a demigod. He must set off on a quest to clear his name with the Greek God Zeus for a crime that he did not commit.

The Lightning Thief

This production of The Lightning Thief is performed with great heart.

Clearly, this young cast is committed to delivering their highest quality performance, and they enjoy working together.

Owen Stewart played the lead character, Percy Jackson. Stewart gave a fully committed performance as Percy, embodied great energy and emotional depth with the character that propelled the story.

Samantha Lee played Percy’s best friend, Grover, a satyr, a half-goat, half-human being. Lee performed the role with great comedic timing and has the best goat laugh I have ever heard.

Thea Fennell played Annabeth with the right combination of toughness and caring. Landon Moore played the stalwart, appearing Luke well. Cecelia Ortega is unshakeable as Clarissa. David Warner gave a hilarious turn as Hades. Gabriella LeRoux, one of the cast’s youngest members, offered an impressive performance as the Oracle.

The cast, including Hailey Hession,

Gayle Hession, Savannah Ford-Myers, Brianna LeRoux, and Curt Fennell, all gave admirable performances.

Public School Theater

A related critic’s note: the day I was set to review this production, I sadly learned that Seminole High is not offering a theater program this school year. With the decline of theater education in our public schools, programs such as Ghostlight Youth Company are essential to help our youth cultivate their creative skills and develop empathy for a healthier future for all. Seek out and engage with these organizations.

Say Cheese

St. Pete Beach’s Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz

I am a self-proclaimed cheese fiend. Nearly all the food at my family gatherings contains cheese and if the world were coming to an end, you would find me facedown in fromage.

I’ve explored cheese caves in Europe, experienced tastings with 40+ varieties, and one of my favorite kitchen hacks is making my own paneer (Indian cheese) and ricotta.

My wife might not recall but one of the first questions I asked her when we got together was, “You’re not lactose intolerant, are you?” #Priorities. So, when my editor told me to review Fo’Cheezy Twisted Meltz in St. Pete Beach, I was pretty stoked.

‘90s Vibes

Fo’Cheezy is “comfort food” with a stoner twist. The throwback vibe is loud with ‘90s decor and graffiti-splattered walls (courtesy of St. Pete muralists the Vitale Bros.) The menu novelizes the nostalgic classics like grilled cheese, Twinkies, cookie dough balls, and PB&Js. There’s also cheese curds, apple pies, tater tots, and French toast. It’s a lot to digest (literally and figuratively) but it’s one milkshake away from carnival food.

The grilled cheese sandwiches are over-the-top stuffed — and way too greasy for my taste. While I appreciate intriguing ingredients like bierria beef short rib, green chili dijonnaise, and bahn mi slaw, it felt like they were trying too hard to be hip. Grilled cheeses like Seoul Brother ($16 — Korean BBQ) and the Cluck Norris ($16) felt like a stretch. In my opinion, the menu is glorified food truck fare at best.

Fo’Cheezy: Stoner Comfort Food

I ordered the Cheesy Caprese ($15) with Buffalo mozzarella, provolone, whipped ricotta, basil pesto, brus-

chetta tomatoes, picked red onions, and balsamic syrup, served on butter-drenched sourdough. The picked onions added a subtle pop that cut through all of the fatty cheese. The flavors were almost there, but I couldn’t get past the fuzzy film of grease coating my mouth after each bite. It made for a displeasurable eating experience, something I’ve never described about a grilled cheese.

In addition, I also had the Mac Daddy Rolls ($8). Two, massive egg rolls stuffed with mac and cheese, rolled in crushed Cheetohs, and served with honey barbecue sauce. Had I been blitzed at the time, I’m sure they would have tasted delicious. But I found the egg roll skin to be undercooked and chewy, and the mac and cheese underseasoned. Overall, they were messy to eat.

If really you want the full carnival food experience, get the Dough Boyz ($9). It’s Fo’Cheezy’s chocolate chip cookie egg rolls with churro dust, salted caramel hot fudge, whipped cream, Oreo crumb and a cookie crisp. Or splurge on a hand-spun milkshake (all $10) like the Butterface with vanilla ice cream, Nutella, chopped Butterfingers, and whipped cream. Regardless, you’ll be in for a sugar rush like none other.

If you’re a fan of dairy and carbs (and why wouldn’t you be?), this joint’s for you.

POWERFUL PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit, you who solves all problems, who lights all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who give me the divine gifts to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things and confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you, even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you, in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. After 3 days the favor requested will be granted, even if it may appear difficult. This prayer must be published immediately after the favor is granted, without mentioning the favor, only your initials should appear at the bottom. SC
