Pride of Ownership
By Patrick Heinzen
Tensions ran high during the Aug. 15 Gulfport City Council meeting during a discussion about Gulfport Pride 2024, on the agenda as Resolution 202364. As the council began speaking about the Gulfport 2024 events calendar, the topic of the fourth annual Gulfport Pride Festival came up.
“I would really rather not be here tonight,” Susan Gore, president of the LGBTQ Resource Center told the council.
Gulfport Pride Festival
For the last three years, the LGBTQ Resource center benefited from the funds raised from the celebration. During this time, Suzanne King (SIK Promotions), along with Ester Venouziou, (LocalShops1), organized the event. The event also received support from Gulfport Vice Mayor Paul Ray (Ward III) and his husband, Wesley.
Through these years, King submitted the application as the event organizer, with the LGBTQ Resource center as the beneficiary. According to Ray, he formed a partnership with King and became involved in the planning.
For the 2024 Pride Fest, a new nonprofit organization called Gulf-
port Pride Florida applied for the event. This nonprofit includes Ray (president), Wesley Ray (vice president), Venouziou (secretary), and King (treasurer).
Because ownership of the event came into question at the meeting, The Gabber Newspaper reviewed the applications for the last
five years. Although Gore applied as the nonprofit beneficiary, King (SIK) acted as and agreed to the terms as the applicant on all applications, other than for the 2024 celebration.
According to Gore, the Center submitted an incomplete application on June 9 to organize the 2024 Pride cel-

new ones. There will likely be another bill about short-term rentals, which our senator, Nick Deceglie, sponsored last year. This could be another good way to get involved by tracking what bills are coming up and supporting the ones you like and letting our representatives know when you don’t like something.
Gulfport on the Edge
My website page (City of Gulfport>Government>Ward 1) now has links to the presentation of Gulfport on the Edge from the June 20 council meeting as well as much of the backup materials furnished to council members.
The page also has a tab for projects you might think should get done, or that you would like to do. This form will help clarify the ideas and help us find volunteers to help you — and give you any help you need from the City.
Next to this tab is one for volunteers who would like to help and their areas of interest or knowledge. I would encourage you to think of projects residents can do on their own or with City assistance. We can help you clarify your ideas and find volunteers. Examples include:
• Welcome to Gulfport information sessions. Two residents restarted these. They had permission to use Scout Hall for free. This benefits new and existing residents.
• Block parties. There was one for Earth Day with more planned. This requires permission to close the street and fun was had by all.
• Rain Garden at the Rec Center. Residents got a grant and planted and maintained the garden. The City helped dig it a bit deeper and made sure we were planting the right things. After a year the City of Gulfport took over maintenance.
• Tangerine Greenway. Residents are
In July, the Community and Urban Forestry Working Group met. Local cities are doing Tree Canopy Inventories which, in case of storm damage, can result in money from FEMA. There are Invasive Tree Education sessions and Citizen Foresters, as well as discussion about cross-jurisdictional tree ordinances. There are grants around at the state and federal level to plant more trees.
Some cities use AmeriCorps volunteers, residents, and college students to help with tree inventories, planting, stormwater, and water clean-ups. There’s a lot residents can do to make our city even more of a “Tree City.” This could be multiple projects!
Florida Bills
The State legislature will start committee meetings soon to prepare for the 2024 session. Some bills that failed or didn’t make it to the floor for a vote will come back, as well as many
Business District
On July 31 at the Neighborhood Center there was a great meeting with the businesses on 49th Street. Brother John Mohammed, St. Pete City Council, and Ian O’Hara, Gulfport Council (Ward IV) planned the meeting. It was for businesses on both sides of the street, from 2nd Avenue North to the water. Attendance was great and it was decided they wanted to form a “business district” instead of just a business association.
They will meet again Aug. 28. If you live in this area, this is another way to get involved to make this area more appealing and useful to the neighborhood.
Gulfport is filled with talented, knowledgeable residents. Together we can keep our community spirit strong and accomplish a lot. Let’s see what we can do together in the coming year!

Special Events in Gulfport
By Patrick Heinzen
Each year, special events in Gulfport (think GeckoFest), promote Gulfport businesses, raise money for community programming, and draw tourists to the community. On Aug. 15, Gulfport City Council approved a calendar of special events for the rest of 2023 and the first half of 2024.
“I’m very excited about this calendar,” said Councilmember Ian O’Hara (Ward IV). “This brings numerous people to our great city.”
For council discussion about the 2024 Gulfport Pride event, please read the cover story.
Gulfport Merchants Chamber Fine Arts Festival
The first event brought up was the ninth annual Gulfport Merchants Chamber Fine Arts Festival.
Each year, artists can apply to be part of the Fine Arts Festival. This festival gives them the opportunity to sell their art, and interact with other artists in the community. This two-day festival takes place in Veterans Park in Gulfport Feb. 10-11, 2024.
VETSports Beach Volleyball Gulfport Open Charity Sporting Event
The next event discussed is the 12th annual VETSports Beach Volleyball Gulfport Open Charity Sporting Event.
This event aims to support veterans through a two-day volleyball tournament open to everyone on Nov. 11-12, 2023. The tournament itself splits into categories based on gender and skill — between men’s, women’s, and co-ed matches.
The tournament occurs at Gulfport’s beach volleyball courts, adjacent to the historic casino.
ReadOut
Council also approved a fundraising event run by Gulfport’s LGBTQ Resource Center. This event is to be a part of the seventh annual ReadOut festival, a celebration of LGBTQ literature. Each year, various authors of LGBTQ literature gather to speak and share their experiences with the community. This specific fundraiser will take place in Gulfport’s Catherine A. Hickman Theater.
The purpose of this fundraiser would be to raise money for the resource center to continue providing resources, community programming, and event expansions.
ArtJones Open Studio
ArtJones, a two-day event that happens in December, will return once again. Gulfport artists open their home studios so people can see how they work, meet the artists, and buy their work. This year’s event will take place Dec. 2-3 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Casino Dances
Council also approved the regular dances at the Gulfport Casino. These dances take place every week but get organized by a third party. Gulfport City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month, at 6 p.m., at 2401 53rd St. S., Gulfport.

Hickory Dickery Dock? Causeway Village’s Dock Expansion
By Lisa Leveroni
What do you say to a person who rents land from a Mobile Home Community with a dock? Hope you can afford one of the 11 slips!
When a community is so close to the water that it can offer people the opportunity to rent dock space to slip their boats, that’s special, right? Of course, you may not need a boat slip, but it is a nice amenity to have when you live close to the water.
Causeway Village’s dock expansion will be discussed Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at South Pasadena’s City Hall Commission Chambers meeting.
To Dock Your Boat or Not to Dock Your Boat
Causeway Village MHP, LLC in South Pasadena is such a place. Lakeshore Communities owns the community along with hundreds of similar Mobile Home Communities (MHC) across the country. The people who live there own their mobile homes and rent the land from Causeway Village.
Causeway Village received a Special Exception Permit (SEP) from the City of South Pasadena in 2021 to install an additional 35 boat slips.
The Gabber Newspaper called Causeway Village MHP for comment; they did not respond.
What the Special Exception Permit Says
The permit says Causeway Village may add the 35 boat slips as long as they agree to certain conditions. These include that a notfor-profit 501(c)(3) be formed to ensure that the dock is available to residents at a low cost; that the cost of the upkeep and replacement of the dock be funded from this 501(c)(3); and that the size of the boats slipped there is limited (to a maximum of 25-30 feet).
The Issue for Residents in and Around Causeway Village
The ownership of Causeway Village have not begun the boat dock expansion yet. They have not registered for a not-for-profit 501(c)(3). Now, they are going back before the City of South Pasadena on Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Commission Chambers.
Why go back before the Commission when they have already received the Special Exception Permit (SEP)?
“They are going back to try to change the conditions for which they were granted the permit,” says Marj Lorand, resident of a neighboring property, Pasadena Shores.
The Motive for Seeking Another Permit?
Lorand believes that Lakeshore Properties is seeking to expand the use of the new 35 boat slips to include those who do not live in Causeway Village.
Another Bite of the Apple
“Why else would they go back for another permit they already have,” she said. “Removing the conditions of the original permit will only benefit the owners and operators of Causeway Village.”
Lorand also noted this kind of change in the SEP violates city codes 130-10 MH-13.5 — Mobile home residential districts, and 130-12 Residential multifamily districts, which require marinas to be for non-profit community uses.
To Show Your Support for Community Standards
Lorand suggests that you either write a letter to the South Pasadena Commission or attend the meeting and speak at the public hearing (3-minutes per person) for the Special Exception Use Permit for Causeway Village.

ebrations. She said she had yet to find an event planner.
On July 10, Gulfport Pride Florida submitted its application.
Pride continued from cover separately. No one seconded her motion. The meeting continued for a few moments of Thanos and Ray arguing, before Ray called a vote on the resolution, which passed 4-1, with a no from Thanos (Mayor Sam Henderson had asked to be excused from the meeting).
Prior to submitting the applications, Ray, King, and Gore met for lunch at Drunken Taco in Gulfport. King and Ray gave Gore funds raised from Pride 2023, and told her that Gulfport Pride Florida would submit an application for the 2024 celebration. Both parties agree on these details, but that’s where agreement ends. While Ray says they had a conversation after that, Gore say Ray and King left soon after this. Ray also claims that Gore said to him, “I can’t understand why you can’t embrace your gayness.” Gore denies saying this.
Aug. 15 City Council Meeting
Council discussed Gulfport Pride Florida, triggering a verbal conflict between Ray and Gore. This issue came to light during the Aug. 15 City Council meeting. As community members began to share their concerns with the situation, tempers flared.
“I don’t want to hear anymore of these lies,” said Ray. “Five years of history and now you’re trying to steal this from me.”
This came after Councilmember April Thanos (Ward I) made a motion to remove this event from the calendar so Council could review it
“What happened at city council should never have happened,” Ray later told The Gabber Newspaper, reflecting on the meeting. “I do not want to be negative. I was absolutely wrong in raising my voice, but I believe anyone in my position would be a little bit angry.”
Gore says the meeting continues to weigh on her, too.
“I asked questions about facts. I did not hear an answer. If being heard is having your questions answered, then I was not heard at the meeting,” said Gore. “A Pride event shouldn’t belong to one person. It is for the benefit of all of us.”
While Gore is optimistic for the future success of the Gulfport Pride Festival, she is unsure about her involvement with the event. On the other hand, Ray hopes to repair this partnership with the LGBTQ Resource Center, and to continue with them as the beneficiary of the funds raised from the fest.
Gulfport Pride Festival will take place June 1, 2024.

Boat Safety 101
Gulfport USCG Auxiliary Offers Monthly Courses
By Lisa Leveroni
Did you know that the waters of Tampa Bay and Pinellas County rank number two in boating accidents in the state of Florida? This is second only to the Miami area. Not exactly something to brag about.
“That’s why we put so much emphasis on boater safety,” says Vice Commander Howard Bush of the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 7-16 in Gulfport. This is an all-volunteer group.
USCG and USCG Auxiliary Exercises in Boating Safety
The crews of both the USCG and the Auxiliary work together on training exercises for emergency rescue and safety.
“A typical safety training exercise involves the USCG Auxiliary vessel getting out there with the regular USCG vessels to drill on things like side-by-side tows and long tows,” says Bush.
They also take part in mock medical emergencies and emergency drops from C-130s.
“Recently, we participated in a
rescue training exercise whereby the USCG had to figure out where we were out in the Gulf to rescue us,” Bush said.
The exercise involved no use of GPS devices. It took the USCG less than 20 minutes to find the boat in distress and rescue the parties aboard.
“This is what we do,” Bush says.
Take a Boating Safety Course
Many people think they don’t need a course on boating.
“I have been a boat owner for a few years now; why would I need a course?” Josh Baker, St. Pete Beach resident says.
“Everyone can use a boating safety course because you need to know what to do when wind, water and weather conditions suddenly change,” Bush says. “What if your

captain becomes injured or sick?”
The average boater may not be prepared for emergency conditions or even simply a common nautical occurrence. If you don’t understand what a bell or a buoy tells you as a boat operator, you may be in trouble. And what about charts and obstacles in the water?
Gulfport USCG Auxiliary Offers Two Courses
“We try to offer at least two courses a month at the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 7-16,” said Bush.
There is a free course that runs for an hour-and-a-half. This course is called “Suddenly in Command” and highlights what you may need to know if your captain is unavailable to pilot your vessel.
“We teach basic needs for first
aid, emergency measures, basic navigation, charts, and safety,” Bush says.
Recreational Boating Safety Course
The second course available to the public is Recreational Boating Safety. This is a $40 course similar to the Power Squadron course that certifies every passing participant as a safe and educated boater.
At the completion of the Recreational Boating Safety course, you receive a certificate and card from the State of Florida. You are then Florida Certified in Boating Safety, which also can mean discounted insurance premiums. It also gives you an advantage when you are boarded for inspection by the Coast Guard.
Register for a Boating Safety Course
“The best thing about the Recreational Boating Safety course is that you leave this day-long session with more confidence in your ability to navigate your boat safely. You also have the self-assurance that you can keep all your passengers safe,” Bush says.
The Recreational Boating Safety course is on the second Saturday of every month at the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 7-16 building at 3120 Miriam St. S. in Gulfport. It runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a break for lunch. All Florida residents are welcome. For information or class registration, call Bush at 305-7313580 or Marty Richardson, FSO Finance and Public Education at 630-674-5352.

Pretty
in Pink
The Pink Streets of St. Pete
By James Schnur
If asked to name “pretty in pink” places from Pinellas history, locals frequently mention the fabled “Pink Streets” south of Pinellas Point Drive. Or, they talk about the fabulous stucco on the “Pink Palace,” the Don CeSar. These streets and hotel suites first appeared in the 1920s. However, the ruddy roads have a history that few remember nearly a century after their creation.
Healthy Land Holdings
On April 29, 1885, Dr. Washington Chew Van Bibber delivered a paper at the American Medical Association conference in New Orleans. Entitled “Peninsular and Sub-Peninsular Air and Climate,” the Baltimore physician’s presentation focused on an area he believed would serve as the perfect location for a proposed “Health City.”
Three years before the Orange Belt Railway connected a small settlement that became St. Petersburg with the outside world in 1888, Van Bibber touted the benefits of living in the area now comprised of Pinellas Point, Maximo Point, and Lakewood Estates. He unsuccessfully attempted to market these then-remote lands in the mid-1880s.
In the early 1900s, David and Marguerite Cook bought waterfront acreage south of downtown St. Petersburg. They also acquired large portions of Pinellas Point in
1906. At that time, no paved roads existed in that area.
The couple had a successful publishing business in Elgin, Illinois. Marguerite Cook transferred parklands to the city in February 1917 for Waterfront Park. Parts of these tracts later became the sites of the Mahaffey Theater, Salvador Dalí Museum, and a portion of Albert Whitted Airport. However, she kept her substantial Pinellas Point holdings intact and undeveloped until the 1920s.
Due to a lack of quality roads, the land boom originally bypassed much of the area south of Lake Maggiore. By 1924, Maximo Road (31st Street)
and 4th Street had reached the southern end of the peninsula. Better road access to downtown destinations encouraged Marguerite to develop her healthy inventory of land into a new subdivision.
A Princely Portmanteau?
Marguerite Cook and her eldest son, George E. Cook, formed the Murok Realty Corp. in 1925. They launched ambitious plans to develop lands they owned south of Pinellas Point Drive between 10th and 22nd Streets South.
The company’s name served as a portmanteau, a blending of two words. Similar to the way that “brunch” combines “breakfast” and “lunch,” “Murok” combined Marguerite’s maiden name of “Murat” with her married name of “Cook.” By the time her company began to market some of Cook family’s lands, she had become a highly-regarded businesswoman in St. Petersburg.
There may be more to Marguerite Murat Cook’s ancestry, including Napoleonic connections. However, she apparently never talked much about them. Her July 1941 obituary claimed she was a descendant of Joachim Murat (1767-1815). This first

Prince Murat also held the titles of King of Naples and Marshal of the (French) Empire. Through marriage, Joachim became Napoleon’s brother-in-law.
Some census records claim Marguerite’s father, Thomas Murat, was born in France, possibly into this powerful family. W.L. Straub’s 1929 history of Pinellas County places Thomas’s birth location in Tallahassee, which may have him connected to Prince Achille Murat, Joachim’s son and a powerful leader in St. Augustine and during the early years of Tallahassee.
Although her exact connections with Napoleon requires futher investigation, Marguerite Cook certainly rolled out her vision of the royal red carpet in 1925.
Spending Green to See Red
Red roads and auburn avenues first appeared along Pinellas Point during the spring of 1925. In a halfpage advertisement placed in the May 29, 1925 Tampa Morning Tribune, the Murok Corp. explained the reason for the concrete’s red tint: “We are coloring it red ... because when we went up to the Lake Wales Section we noticed that the red clay
streets up there reflected no glare into the eyes and that the color blended beautifully into the landscape.”
“Pavements are of a dull red, a color obtained by a mixture of one part cement, two parts sand and four parts selected gravel,” according to a July 12, 1925 article in the St. Petersburg Times (now Tampa Bay Times) that described the Murok development.
By October 1925, the City Planning Board approved an ambitious dredge-and-fill request that would have extended Pinellas Point into Tampa Bay with new islands, canals, and an exclusive beach and casino.
Seeking Healthy Returns
Knowing the Van Bibber story from the mid-1880s, Cook’s sales team marketed their Pinellas Point properties as “The Healthiest Spot on Earth.” Company cars whisked people from downtown to the Murok properties. They occasionally offered investors copies of Van Bibber’s “Health City” documents. By 1926, advertisements in the Times encouraged people to follow the red brick roads of 4th Street South and turn onto Pinellas Point Drive “until you come to our own red concrete roads running through the most beautiful place you ever saw.” The company’s Pinellas Point Tea Room offered refreshments to those who came to see Murok’s “miles of red concrete pavement” by mid-1926.
Although Murok Corp. missed the excitement of the early boom years, the Cooks hoped that the presence of the nearby Bee Line Ferry would benefit their development. Before the opening of the original Sunshine Skyway in September 1954, the Bee Line ran between Pinellas Point, Piney Point in Manatee County, and other destinations.
First launched in 1926, the ferry met vehicles at present-day Bay Vista Park, located where 4th Street South curves into Pinellas Point Drive.
Drivers paid a toll to have their vehicles floated across Tampa Bay. This saved them a long drive through Tampa across the Gandy Bridge, also a toll road at the time.

An Unhealthy Economy
Detroit developer Burnette Stephenson first visited St. Petersburg in 1922. Four years later, he acquired more than 65 acres a short distance northeast of the Bee Line. Full-page newspaper advertisements in the Times touted his Alta Marina development in April 1926.
The demise of the land boom ended frenzied real estate speculation by the late 1920s. With only a couple of homes, Stephenson’s Alta Marina remained mostly pinelands until another developer turned it into Bahama Beach, now Bahama Shores, after World War II. Construction also ceased in Lakewood Estates.
Approximately 15 homes sat along Murok’s red roads by 1929, but most of the sanguine streets remained empty. Murok’s plans to expand Pinellas Point into Tampa Bay never materialized.
All Quiet on the Red Street Front
From the late 1920s through the early 1960s, little development happened along lower Pinellas Point. Edward C. Wright bought approximately 500 lots from the remaining
Murok and Cook family holdings in October 1940. Although he sold a few lots, much of the land remained undeveloped.
Kendrick Ford, founding director of Pinellas County’s Heritage Village, remembered going there with his father and brother. The Fords and other south Pinellas families sometimes ventured into the forests to cut down small sugar pines for use as Christmas trees.
Wright donated lands that included the Pinellas Point Temple Mound to the City of St. Petersburg in December 1958. Once part of Cook’s property, the site is now preserved for posterity.
A Rosy Renaming
The red roads received a different nickname after their rouge luster began to fade. A planned repaving of the concrete on some streets led a Times writer on March 7, 1959 to refer to the roads’ “rosy hue” as city officials debated whether to replace the “boomtime pink streets” with blacktop. City leaders soon ditched the asphalt alternative.
A cursory examination of classified ads in the Times reveals that
real estate agents occasionally referred to the Pink Streets in homes for sale during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The pink parlance increased 50 years ago, after Rutenburg Homes bought properties from Wright and touted the grand opening of its Pinellas Point community. Ads during the summer of 1973 celebrated the area’s “winding pink streets and beautiful pines and palms.”
Cat Acts and Cracked Concrete
Long before big names built large mansions, the Pink Streets had residents that gave the community a welcoming and quirky character. Those who lived there in the 1970s may remember Ron and Doris Guay. They arrived in 1971 with a few large cats.
Known by their stage names of Ron and Joy Holiday, the Guays had leopards, tigers, a panther, and a jaguar. When not on the road, the Guays and their “Magnificent Magical Animals” offered Saturday morning performances for the locals at their home. They moved to the Gainesville area in 1984.

disrepair by 1984. Cracks and warps made navigating the roads an arduous adventure. Despite an April 1977 resolution from the St. Petersburg

Arts Commission to encourage the preservation of these roads, the City considered covering them with asphalt.
A five-year battle to preserve the Pink Streets ensued. While some officials complained about the cost of pink concrete, more than half of the property owners signed petitions in support of the streets, knowing they would be required to pay special assessments.
At their Sept. 7, 1989 meeting, City Council members agreed to maintain the Pink Streets. They also approved a measure recognizing the historic value of hexagonal-block sidewalks in older neighborhoods. Nearly 4.5 miles of roadways received much needed repairs in the early 1990s.
A Diverse Drive
The Pink Street area lacks the similarity and uniformity found in many other neighborhoods. Although most of the housing stock dates from the 1970s, various architectural styles adorn the landscape. Once a red ribbon that connected the community, the Pink Streets continue to attract interest for their colorful historical past.

Breeze
By The Gabber Staff
Breeze Waterfront Café Reopens
The Breeze Waterfront Café officially reopened Aug. 16 and is ready to serve breakfast to the Gulfport community.
The breakfast joint reminded folks on Facebook with a photo of the dining space: “Hi everyone. We’re going to reopen tomorrow, Aug. 16. Join us for breakfast. Hope to see you soon.”
Once the summer hit, The Breeze closed from June 12 to Aug. 16.
For the past year, the restaurant has been closing and reopening. The owners announced a permanent closure of the business Sept. 16 due to the building not being up to code with the City’s standards.
On Nov. 25, the business made its comeback. One could say it was a Thanksgiving miracle.
The owners said “we found a solution with the City of Gulfport to go with the code and we got our restaurant license back.”
Since then, loyal customers along with first-timers had a place to chow down for breakfast on Shore Boulevard once again.

Island Super Market
Island Super Market recently opened on Madeira Beach. This isn’t your average convenience store. This beach convenience store stocks traditional grocery items plus beer, wine, cigarettes, vapes, cigars, Delta 8 & 9, and CBD products. Customers say the food is always fresh, and unlike many other small markets, it is clean and well stocked.
Employees are friendly. You walk in, they help you find what you need quickly, and you are out on your way to the beach. They are open early until midnight, seven days a week.
Madeira Mermaids, a beach gift shop, used to reside in this building. Now, visitors can find grab-and-go products on their way to the beach for the day.

New Stage for St. Pete MAD
SunFlower Private School partnered with St. Pete Music, Acting, and Dance (MAD) to expand the group’s performance and rehearsal space.
St. Pete MAD is an arts program that teaches students to become leaders.
Although the space is a former church, the two groups plan to renovate the sanctuary. Additionally, the performing arts academy will hold classes and musical performances beginning this fall.
“Plans include a Mystery Dinner Theater and a Children’s Theater program,” the program announced in a press release.
Their mission is to “guide and inspire young performers through community-building, process-driven arts education.” The group’s mission also says it will “foster leadership, authenticity, and empathy, nurturing confident, skilled performers through a supportive coaching environment.”
“We couldn’t be more excited to share this space that has been special to many, with St. Pete MAD,” Sunflower Private School’s director Nicole Molnar-Riveros said.
Keep an eye out for their latest production of The Addams Family: A New Musical.

Will Gulfport Have a Beach Smoking Ban? A Reader Asks Smoking Bans Along Beaches
This week, a reader wants to know about the possibility of a Gulfport beach smoking ban.
Question: Why is Gulfport not on the soon to be beach banned smoking, vaping list? —James
Schroeder
Answer: Some people may not realize this, but Gulfport tried to enact a smoking ban in 2011 — and it immediately caused legal problems for the City.
“In November of 2011, the City of Gulfport was one of the first communities in Florida to adopt such an ordinance (Ord. No. 2011-13) prohibiting the use of tobacco products on the City’s municipal beach,” City Manager Jim O’Reilly told The Gabber Newspaper. “Subsequently, the ordinance was legally challenged and set aside.”
One reader wants to know if the City of Gulfport will implement a beach smoking ban. Here’s what the City told us.
O’Reilly did say City staff would monitor the bans to see if they “stand up to the anticipated legal challenges” before proposing a similar ban.

St. Pete Author Lisa Kirchner’s ‘Blissful Thinking’ Memoir
By Amanda Hagood
From snake oil salesmen, to televangelists, to celebrity wellness brands, the world is full of folks who’d like to help you find your bliss – usually for a price. But who really holds the key to inner peace? In Lisa Kirchner’s Blissful Thinking: A Memoir of Overcoming the Wellness Revolution (Motina Books, September 2023), St. Petersburg author L.L. Kirchner tackles this perennial problem by trying, more or less, a little bit of everything.
Finding Yourself... In A Lot of Weird Places
Her journey begins in 2006 when, after her husband’s request for a divorce – oh-so-thoughtfully delivered over the phone… while he was at work… in another country. Kirchner decides to leave her job and pursue a yoga instruction course in the beachy city of Goa, India. From there, her quest for enlightenment takes her across the world and through a multitude of practices. She tries silent meditation, chanting, therapy, 12-step programs, energy healers, psychics, and even a tantric energy workshop in what adherents blithely refer to as a “sex cult.”
It’s a delightful journey, guided by Kirchner’s keen eye and candid voice. Also her deep appreciation for the honest labor of our human soul-searching. Even when we’re pret-
ty clearly just going around in circles. Her very first chapter sets the tone. It braids the text of a pert resignation letter she drafted with the spiraling self-doubt she actually experiences as she writes. Kirchner’s gift for framing the human condition with humor and acceptance really shines.
Lisa Kirchner’s Blissful Thinking: Hard Truths
But it’s not all spiritual fun and games. In a country where, according to the U.S. Surgeon General, we
are suffering from “epidemic” levels of loneliness and isolation, Kirchner’s struggle to overcome rejection and love wholeheartedly takes on some added depth. And her search goes well beyond romantic love to plumb the depths of platonic friendship and family ties. (Her parents, somewhat indifferent owners of a health club, are a striking foil for her own earnest quest for wholeness.)
If you have suffered a bad break-up, faced cancer, lived with addiction, or painfully lost your religion, there are parts of this book you may find difficult, even upsetting. But with short, easily-digestible chapters and a relaxed pace, you can step in and out of the story as needed.
Let’s Do Launch
Want to hear the story from the storyteller herself? Lisa Kirchner launch Blissful Thinking at book at Tombolo Books on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. Pre-order signed copies through Tombolo’s website. And as a special bonus, Kirchner is offering anyone who pre-orders the book a free creativity workshop. Sign up at thegabber.com.

Mismatched Meals V9 Eats Has Something For Everyone
By Morgan Banno
Being a food writer has major perks. I get to nosh at local eateries, explore different restaurant concepts, and sample all kinds of bites. As a food writer who is also a chef, I pay extra attention to detail when dining out. I research menus before making reservations, and I’ll have the meal I’ll order explicitly planned to a tee. (Call me “type A”, but I don’t screw around when it comes to food.) However, my recent visit to V9 Eats in St. Pete was spontaneously out of my comfort zone and yet absolutely worth the stop.
It’s hard to miss V9 Eats as its exterior flaunts bright, pastel colors of the ‘80s. It’s housed in an old car service building (think Jiffy Lube) but has a playful, industrial feel with a California vibe. The menu is pretty hefty and doesn’t have a central theme, but there is literally something for every palate. It took me a few minutes to digest the menu because V9 offers everything from smash burgers and shrimp po’ boys to burritos and
BBQ ribs. My chef mentors would have a coronary over a menu this mismatched and yet, it works.
Full Flavors
As ridiculous as it may seem to review chicken salad, V9’s homemade chicken salad is to DIE for. I’m not even sure I could make a chicken salad that tasted as fresh and perfectly dressed as V9. Tip: Order it as a sandwich on Dave’s Famous Bread ($10). I eat a low-carb, lowfat diet, but even my trainer would approve of this sandwich. As a lover of world cuisines, I’m always on the lookout for ethic flavors, particularly those of Southeast Asia. Not many restaurants serve Schnitzel and butter chicken on the same menu, so I had to give it a try. V9’s butter chicken ($13) is marinated in spices, smothered in warm, tomato curry and served over Cavatappi pasta with a garnish of yogurt sauce. The flavors were on point, but curry served over noodles had a real dorm-room
feel to it that I didn’t anticipate nor was a fan of.
Made In House
I had the pleasure of speaking with one of V9’s managers and to my surprise, nearly everything is made inhouse. Other than the fried items and some of the breads/wraps, V9 takes pride in their scratch-made creations. All wings and ribs (and any other BBQ meat they may have on special that day) is smoked on site. They make chili daily for the hot dogs and their dressings, sauces, rubs, and dill cream sauce (a fan favorite), are all made on site with the freshest ingredients. Hell, they even ferment cucumbers to make their own pickles!
If you can’t decide what you want to eat but like to have a plethora of options, swing by V9 Eats and get ready to have your tastebuds bombarded in an epic adventure.

Did Someone Say Trivia?
The Gabber Takes on Trivia
By Cameron Healy
The future of The Gabber Newspaper and friends tested their knowledge at Thursday night trivia at Mastry’s Brewing Co. Spoiler alert: We won, first try.
Shriner with Events Done Right hosts a trivia night every Thursday at the St. Pete Beach brewery. All are free to play. Top three winners receive prizes, such as gift cards.
Team Gabber popped a squat right in front of our host for the night ready to see how much we know. Our team name was not “The Gabber,” but instead “swag.” Typical Gen Z language. We were probably the youngest ones there all in our early 20s, but at least 21, of course.
Trivia began at 7 p.m. and ran until 9 p.m. We drank, ate wings, and watched the sunset all while trying to climb the trivia rankings.
We started off pretty rough with six points in the first round. After that, we started getting almost all correct answers every round. Ques-
tion topics ranged from pop culture and movie references to simple science and math facts to literary knowledge.
While playing five other teams, we had some hard-core competition. But, this didn’t deter us.
I believe we got smarter the more we drank. (Editor’s note: That’s not how alcohol works, Cam.)
Patrick, our brand-new news & politics reporter, ordered Mastry’s “Left On Red,” an Irish red ale and the “Yuzu Mojito” hard seltzer. I ordered the “Just Like Old Times” orange creamsicle sour, which was absolutely amazing for a summer drink.
In this trivia game, teams can order special brews to gain points. Ethan, our summer features intern, ordered the “Blind Pass Brown Ale,” which helped our team receive five extra points. Lastly, our honorary Gabber friend, Matt Larson, took one for the team by ordering the “Pais Tropical” IPA, earning us five points.
Certain rounds allowed teams to win a free beer of choice. During rounds three and nine, the highest scorer received a free beer. In round six, the lowest scorer won a free beer.
Toward the end of the game, we were tied for second place. Our young, competitive minds wouldn’t let that slide. We wanted to win.
When it came to the bonus round, we were asked to identify which dating apps were real or fake. We were incredibly confident in our answers. So, we bet all in.
Shriner announced us as the winners with more than 200 points. As first place winners, we received a $20 gift certificate to Mastry’s. Unfortunately, we couldn’t use it that same night.
I guess that means we have to save it for the next Thursday night trivia. Beat you again... I mean, see you again, soon, trivia competition.

Take notes losers; these are the faces of winners. L-R: Cam Healy, Ethan Perelstein, Patrick Heinzen, and honorary Gabber friend Matt Larson.
