Gulfport Pride

I was prepared to sit in the mayor’s seat for the Aug. 15 City Council meeting, but I was not prepared for the unfounded multiple personal attacks on my character, regarding ownership of Gulfport Pride.

Although, it was within my rights to gavel out the personal aspects as speaking from dais towards a specific Councilmember and not council, I allowed them to speak. After sitting through almost 20 minutes of personal attacks, I succumbed and got into a heated explanation. For that, I apologize.

I think our community deserves to hear the full story, to how we all got here. We began Gulfport Pride in 2020, in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Stonewall as the “Friends of Dorothy March and Pride Flag Raising.” This was to be followed by an event that May, called “Prelude to Pride,” at the Public Library parking lot. But then everything went dark due to COVID.

After COVID restrictions were lifted, I requested from Council the use of the Beach Boulevard pads for Pride Festival 2021, which did not require an application due to no street closures or city property. The event was a big success, and we were able to donate $1,587.62 to the LGBTQ Resource Center, which was the beneficiary that year. The event organizer, SIK Promotions, was paid the same amount to cover hundreds of hours of work involved in planning and executing the entire event.

For future events, especially those with a street closure, the City told us it would require a full application to be submitted to be approved by Council. Although the event coordinator runs her own 501(c)(3) here in Gulfport, and there are dozens of other nonprofits we could have chosen as beneficiaries, we decided to offer that opportunity again to the LGBTQ Resource Center the opportunity, so they signed the forms required by the City.

Meanwhile, we had already been working on making Gulfport Florida

Pride an officially designated 501(c)(3) charity. That was the goal all along, so we could do more to raise funds not only for the resource center, but other LGBTQ nonprofits.

The 2022 and 2023 festivals were even more successful, due to the work of Suzie King of SIK Promotions, Ester Venouziou of LocalShops1, and me. We donated $6,201.91 to the resource

center in 2022, and $7,574.02 in 2023. From the beginning, five years ago when we started Gulfport Pride, our vision was to expand from a single event (the festival), and donate not just to a single entity, but have several events throughout the year and support various organizations who serve the LGBTQ community.

REMEMBER: Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

Beauty and Business

Gulfport’s 49th Street South Beautification Project

As you enter Gulfport, what are you greeted by? Houses, trees, and the occasional small business.

While this demonstrates the community, it doesn’t fully represent the spirit of Gulfport. It isn’t until you reach Beach Boulevard where you can see the vision that the community has for the city; to connect residents to each other, and local businesses.

This is the basis for a beautification project currently in the planning stages for the main entrances to Gulfport.

Gulfport City Councilmember Ian O’Hara (Ward IV), in partnership with St. Petersburg City Councilmember Brother John Muhammad (District 7) are heading the project. With a three-pronged approach, the plan beautifies the southern part of 49th Street South, from First Avenue South, all the way to the water.

49th Street South Beautification Project

The three main focuses of this project are to bring sidewalks to

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, provide more on street parking in front of local businesses, and slow traffic down by reducing the road from four lanes to two.

“We essentially want to make 49th Street into a longer version of Beach Boulevard,” said O’Hara. “If we make the public area better, property owners will want to improve their own area as well.”

O’Hara previously attempted to begin this project, but was unable to do so as a citizen. Now serving on the Gulfport City Council, O’Hara is hopeful for the future of these plans.

“We are going to continue planning, but hope to see ground break on northern 49th Street in January,” said O’Hara. “Once I see the project begin during my term, I will be happy.”

Two islands have already been placed on the southern part of 49th Street. This provides a welcoming entrance to St. Petersburg residents and tourists.

“I like the idea of knowing where you are and feeling the identity of the city throughout the whole city,” said O’Hara.

Business and Neighborhood District

Another large part of the project is O’Hara’s goal to create a 49th Street business and neighborhood district. This allows Gulfport residents to live near and in conjunction with local businesses in the area, not only supporting the businesses, but each other.

The 49th Street Business District visioning meeting occurred the evening of Aug. 28 at the 49th Street Neighborhood Center.

This event features both O’Hara and Muhammad discussing the future for 49th Street South, and allows community involvement in the planning.

“This is going to benefit the entire city,” said O’Hara. “Who wouldn’t want to improve an area that can be improved?”

Medal of Valor Award

St. Pete Beach Firefighter Receives Prestigious Award

On Feb. 1, 2022, St. Pete Beach firefighter/EMT, Brian Peterson picked up his daughter from elementary school. As they were leaving the school in Carrollwood, his daughter noticed a plume of smoke in the neighborhood.

Even though he was off duty, Peterson searched for the source of the smoke nearby. He found the property and told his daughter to wait in the car. The back of the house was engulfed in flames.

Peterson did not have any firefighter’s gear with him. He saw a burned and injured man in the home.

The door was locked, so Peterson broke one of the locked windows, using only a pocket knife.

As he dragged the man out the front door, Peterson could see that he was distraught. He was looking for his cat in the building. The man was not leaving without his cat.

Peterson went back into the fire and quickly found the cat.

Through it all, Peterson managed to get them all out alive. With no protective gear or tools, he made a successful rescue — all on his day off.

This year, Hillsborough County honored Peterson with the Medal of Valor Award. Captain Weldon of the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue recently phoned Peterson to congratulate him on being this

year’s recipient.

“I was really just doing what I have been trained to do,” said Peterson. “It’s what every firefighter does every day.”

When Peterson is on duty, you will find him working in and around Fire Station 23, 7301 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach.

New

Rules to Follow Restrictions at the Skyway Fishing Pier

New fishing rules and restrictions are being imposed at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park.

The Skyway Pier is adjacent to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. This fourmile-long pier operates 24 hours each day, 365 days a year.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved new rules for fishing at the Skyway after hearing concerns from bird rescue groups and conservationists.

These groups voiced worries over the number of injured and killed pelicans, seagulls, and other birds caught in fishing lines, hooks, and lures at the park.

New Rules to Expect

From Nov. 15 to March 15, FWC will prohibit the use of fishing rigs and lures with more than one hook. Those include sabiki and chicken rigs, topwater plugs, and treble hooks.

Anglers cannot use more than “two sets of hook-and-line fishing gear” and rods while fishing, according to the new rule.

Starting Oct. 1, visitors who plan to fish must have proof they completed the annual safety and state rule education requirements. FWC approved the changes at its July meeting. Visit floridastateparks.org to learn more about requirements.

The FWC will test the new rules and revisit them after two years.

Hoping For Balance

Pelican and seabird entanglements at the bridge and pier resulted in tension. These rules should help resolve issues between conservation and bird rescue groups and those fishing at the pier. Some fishermen expressed concern about pushing the park to close, or cutting hours at the pier.

FWCC Chairman Rodney Barreto said the new rules will balance everyone’s interests, while also protecting pelicans and other birds getting caught in lines and lures.

“This is a great beginning to resolve this issue for both anglers and bird conservationists,” said Barreto. “We look forward to hearing an update from staff on the effectiveness of this rule at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park.”

Following the success of the 2023 festival, we procured our not-for-profit status and filed the application for Gulfport Pride Festival under the new organization, with the same organizers that have been managing the event since the beginning.

On July 13, I met with the Resource Center’s president and informed them we would not be using their 501(c)(3) status for the event, and instead fulfilling our goal of having our own. I was hopeful that any questions and future collaboration could be resolved during the meeting where it was once again iterated that the Resource Center had been the beneficiary in the past three years — not the event organizer or “owner.”

Sadly, the meeting devolved to personal attacks, and the discussion ended with that. As community leaders, we should have discussed the situation and came up with a resolution, instead of creating a public spectacle during a City Council meeting.

Pride is celebrated year-round, and particularly the whole month of June,

and offers a wealth of new possibilities for fundraising events. As former Councilmember and GMC President Barbara Banno stated, we in the LGBTQ+ community have come under persecution under waves of anti LGBTQ+ laws. This is a time that we need to band together, along with our allies, and not fall victim to the infighting that was part of the reasoning for these bills in the first place. We as the Gulfport Pride Florida Inc. continue to support and assist the Resource Center, along with other organizations that support our community. — Paul

Beaches Smoking Ban

I am personally against smoking as a health issue being a former smoker and lung cancer survivor. The issue here is disposal of cigarettes as trash not their use I believe. All trash should not be discarded on a public beach.

The founding fathers of the United States believed in a balance between individual rights and government

regulations. They sought to establish a system that protected individual freedoms while also ensuring a functioning government to maintain order and provide for the common good. This balance is reflected in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which guarantee certain individual rights while also granting the government the authority to enact necessary regulations for the well-being of society. The exact interpretation of this balance has evolved over time and continues to be a subject of debate in modern discussions about governance and personal liberties.

Gulfportians Prepare Sandbags for Tropical Storm Idalia

How prepared do Gulfportians feel? Bev Williamson and Greg Rome said they don’t feel prepared at all.

“We were not ready for this year,” Williamson says about their fourth hurricane experience living in Gulfport.

Because of the city’s location on the water, some residents experience major flooding no matter what. Joan Weesies and Kathy Jaeck said they live only 100 feet

from the water.

“I’m not worried about the winds, but the water has come up to the door before,” said Jaeck. “We have hurricane shutters as well... If it’s a mandatory evacuation, we have an RV and we will head to Tampa.”

The Gabber Newspaper went to press in advance of Hurricane Idalia’s U.S. landfall; please visit thegabber. com for lower Pinellas hurricane updates.

Margaret Ann “Casey” Swanson

Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend Margaret Ann “Casey” Swanson passed away on July 27 in St. Petersburg after a brief illness. She was born on Oct. 4, 1946, in Miami. She is predeceased by her parents Lt. Col. James Casey and Virginia Casey and her brother, Lt. Col. Patrick Casey. She is survived by her daughter Christina Casey Swanson, her daughter’s father Steven Swanson (Lynette Frederick), sisters Joanne Casey (Amy Jorstad) and Dee Dee (John) Rutigliano, brothers Michael John Casey (Colleen) and Mark Casey, sister-in-law Michelle Casey, nieces and nephews Joseph (Lena Ritchie), Mary (Isma Castellanos), Anthony, John, and Rafael Rutigliano, Mick Casey, Siobhan and Alana Casey, Christofer, Ethan and Matthew Jorstad, and grand-nephew Bruno Castellanos Rutigliano.

“Maggie,” as she was known to

family, “Casey,” as she was known to friends and colleagues, and “Pocket Mom,” as Chrissy nicknamed her (she was tiny), was a nurse and Monroe County Child Protective social worker who was devoted to her clients. She loved quilting, sewing, gardening, reading romance and mystery novels, delicate teacups, Earl Grey, SweetTarts, wearing fun hats, and was obsessed with the color pink.

A memorial tea party is scheduled for Sept. 9 from 2-4 p.m. at the Town Shores Clubhouse in Gulfport. A memorial brunch party is scheduled for Oct. 8 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Olmstead Lodge in Highland Park Rochester, NY. Please wear pink and a fun hat!

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her love of quilting, the family requests that donations be made to the Red Tent Women’s Initiative, which teaches quilting and crafting skills to incarcerated women, at redtentwomensinitiative.org.
