Day of the Gecko By Abby Baker, Photos by Larry Busby
The Gulfport Merchants Chamber’s traditional end-ofsummer street party, GeckoFest, featured a parade, vendors, street performers, live music and revelers in themed costumes all day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Gulfport Saturday, September 4.
The brightest change in plans since GeckoFest was canceled in 2019, was the City of Gulfport’s fireworks display at the end of the night. However, foot traffic was noticeably lighter this year,

This Saturday marks two decades since terrorists hijacked four planes with box cutters and forever changed our history. Where were you? I was at a reclaimed water conference in California with a group of estranged coworkers, thousands of miles from home in Florida, and even farther from my family in New York. With flights grounded, phone lines overwhelmed and no rental cars to be had, I made an anxious, multiday bus trip across the states, not knowing – like many of us – what was happening to my family, or to my country. Where were you? I hadn’t yet started as a reporter for the Gabber, but the newspaper ran a special cover that week in memory of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives – in a nightmare we all watched unfold in real time, for days and weeks to come. For those of us old enough to remember, it is impossible to forget. We didn’t know what would come next. No one was sure what to think or believe, and the sentiment to attack the Middle East ran high. The world changed that day in many small ways, and much bigger ones.

Still, while division may be the norm in present-day America, my memories of 9/11 and the days following were of a united country. I was stuck on a bus. At one point, we doubted we’d even make it back home. But that bus full of terrified strangers bonded. When my fellow travelers tell that story today, they tell a story of all of us – scared, but together.
What’s your story? Where were you on the day American changed forever? Feel free to share your memories of 9/11 in the comments with this post on Facebook, or you can email me privately. Telling our stories, I have found, helps to heal us all. This week in the paper, you’ll find a collection of 9/11 memorials you can attend in the area, including in Gulfport. Next week, we will have coverage of those events – and continue to tell this story. Peace.

voices Dear Editor: I was very much enlightened by James Schnur’s ninepart series in the Gabber on the history of Pinellas County School integration. Like the National Geographic photographer who once told me the secret of getting his award winning photos – “being there” – Schnur was certainly there, as a young student during segregation, and as an author and lecturer on the history of Pinellas County education and Florida history. I knew little of the long and winding road of desegregation in the South, until now. I thank the Gabber for bringing that history to light. My knowledge of segregation came early for me too, a young girl of 10 growing up in Washington, D.C. in 1954. My siblings and I attended a Catholic school a block down the street, which was integrated, while public schools a few blocks away were segregated. When the Supreme Court decision on Brown v. Board of Education ruled that state laws establishing racial segregation in schools was unconstitutional, the fallout in the District of Columbia was swift. Those against desegregation marched up and down the street in front of our house, East Capitol Street, blocks from the Supreme Court. Many moved to Virginia and Maryland. As children, we wrestled with the sight of neighbors with scowling faces carrying signs and packing up. And I wondered about the young girl my age, Linda Brown, who I learned was named in the famous court case that challenged the separate but equal policy in U.S. schools. In the 70s I would read of protests against desegregation in places in the North, like Boston. Now I know of the hard-fought battles and lawsuits to assure equality in education in this county I have called home since 2011. Thank you, Gabber, for bringing this history to us. It’s news we need. – M.L. Faunce, Gulfport.

What’s Next at Piney Point?
Environmental Groups Say the Spill Could Affect Bay Area Waters for Years The disaster at Piney Point may have faded from the headlines, but that’s hardly the end of the story. The gypsum stack is still there, and the water level is so high it could overflow if there’s a major rain event. The Department of Environmental Protection keeps daily data, hoping to avoid another spill by monitoring the water level, while the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, FWC, and the Florida Department of Health keep a watchful eye on algal blooms and water quality. On August 5, the DEP filed suit against the owner of the abandoned site, HRK Holdings, deeming them responsible for the leak that resulted in more than 200 million gallons of untreated wastewater dumped into Tampa Bay. The DEP says the lawsuit will be the “final chapter for the Piney Point site.” Ed Sherwood, executive director of the Tampa Bay Estuary Program, says it’s too early to assess the damage. “There was some loss of seagrass between 2018 to 2020, but it will be some time before we can determine

recent seagrass damage,” he said. “We certainly expect to know by year’s end. Sea grass is affected by poor water quality, which is what we monitor in the bay.” While the massive red tide levels that persisted earlier this summer – another potential effect of the Piney Point spill – have subsided in Tampa Bay, Sherwood said this year was certainly unique.

“There hasn’t been a [major] incident with red tide in Tampa Bay since the 1970s,” he said. “We won’t know the effects on the fisheries for two or three years, because the bay is a nursery for many juvenile fish, like snook, so it’s a long-term issue. The big news is that Piney Point is now in receivership which will oversee a final closure.” Jaclyn Lopez, Florida director of the Center for Biological Diversity in St. Petersburg, said they are keeping a close eye on the site after years of DEP paying little attention “This disaster is 20 years in the making,” said Lopez. “We’re still where we were. They need to do right for people, not harm them.” Lopez said there are messages showing that HRK Holdings was talking to the DEP for 12 months before the spill, but there was no action. According to the DEP website, currently there are 27 phosphate mines in Florida, covering more than 450,000 acres. Nine mines are currently active and nine mines are 100 percent reclaimed and released from reclamation obligations. The remaining mines are either not started or are shut down. Phosphate mines typically range in size from approximately 5,000 to 100,000 acres.

south compartment. In June, the Center for Biological Diversity and several other conservation groups filed a lawsuit against Governor Ron DeSantis, the acting secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection,
HRK Holdings, LLC and the Manatee County Port Authority for releasing hundreds of tons of pollutants into Tampa Bay and groundwater, which could ultimately reach the Floridan Aquifer, the main source of Florida’s drinking water. The current plan for Piney Point’s closing is underway, as the DEP works with the new receiver to permanently remove the water. The Manatee County commissioners approved plans for a deep injection well that would accept treated water – that’s water that’s been “cleaned” to remove toxins. But in the meantime, Mosaic’s mine in Mulberry recently applied to expand the current gypstack from 230 acres to 706. Opponents have setup a Facebook page to protest. The expansion is under review and still in the public comment stage. Commenting on the gypstacks remaining in central Florida, Lopez said they all have a record of failure. “There are many violations,” she said. “It’s like they have a license to pollute.”

Part of Enough is Enough – an initiative to tackle gun violence and racial inequities in St. Pete – fueled by St. Petersburg Councilmembers Deborah Figgs-Sanders and Lisa Wheeler-Bowman, the Preschool Officer Program works to build better relationships with the community’s youngest members. “We need to change their perception of what so many of our young people are getting from television, from parents, from news articles, from news stations, always reporting something bad,” Figgs-Sanders said. The idea, she explained, is to encourage regular, friendly interaction between community police officers and young children. During her biweekly visit to Kidz World, Officer Pilkenton learned all of the kids’ names, blew bubbles, slid down the slide, played ball and hugged them during the Friday fun day. A year ago Figgs-Sanders was scrolling Facebook and came across three daycares looking to introduce a program between police and preschoolers to foster love and trust. After brainstorming ideas, Figgs-Sanders pitched the POPs to St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway. Figgs-Sanders said that when the preschoolers grow up, she hopes these early, positive connections will resonate with them. “We don’t focus on the negPolice continued on page 10

Her grandma warned the staff that she might react negatively during the POPs sessions. However, after the initial day, the little girl ran to Officer Pilkenton for a hug. “She’s seeing her differently,” Williams said. “I feel that if [Pilkenton] had just come in, sat down, read a book, got up and left, that she would not have been able to see that side
of her. It would not have been that fun, positive side.” It’s a hopeful sign for the future, according to Williams. “That’s why we feel this program is so important. Because they’ve had such a negative connotation of officers and now they’ll be able to experience the positivity and the fun with each visit, realizing that the officers are really good people and they are there to help, but if you do something wrong....there are consequences,” Williams said.

Smokin’ J’s Brings Truckload of Supplies to Hurricane Victims For the ninth time since 2016, John Riesebeck, owner of Smokin’ J’s BBQ in Gulfport, is off to help storm victims. He made the eight-hour drive to the north Gulf Coast on Monday, September 6, with hurricane relief supplies for victims of the Category 4 Hurricane Ida, which devastated the area on Monday, August 30. Riesebeck and his team of volunteers – namely Kathy Wilson and Jim Kemp – loaded the 26’ foot truck with necessities donated by people and businesses over the last week. According to Riesebeck, the community did not fall short. “Most every business in Gulfport got involved with some type of fundraising effort,” Riesebeck said. The results of the call for donations yielded up to $40,000 worth of items, including 40 gallons of hand sanitizer and multiple pallets of water bottles. “I just want to say how appreciative I am of everybody who helped,” Riesebeck said. “I don’t want to forget anybody, but it feels like it was nearly everyone in Gulfport.” With flooding trapping many Louisianans, it’s not safe for vehicles to drive into Baton Rouge or New Orleans at this time. That complication lead John Riesebeck and his hurricane-bound driving companion of

The Legend of the Mary Disston
How Gulfport’s Most Famous Ship Wreck Might Be a Myth If you have lived in Gulfport long enough, you have probably heard the story of the wreck of the Mary Disston. It goes something like this: On an ordinary day in 1892, the 83foot steamboat is docked at the town’s wooden wharf, pausing in her regular circuit of delivering mail, passengers and freight to Gulfport (then known as Disston City). By the shore stands the town’s small general store and some rustic homes, dwarfed by towering pine woods where bears and panthers still occasionally prowl. The wide sweep of Boca Ciega Bay is uncomplicated by the man-made shapes of finger islands and sky-scraping condos. The confectionery pink towers of the Don CeSar are still another thirty-six years in the future. Suddenly, tragedy strikes. A fire, sparked by causes unknown, flares into life at the end of the pier and, before anyone can stop it, licks the timber decks of the Mary Disston. The ship is quickly swallowed by a conflagration that, according to one account, could be seen from a mile away. Villagers assemble and push the fiery vessel out into the bay. They watch in anguish as the Mary, their link to the outside world in a time when roads are perilous and rail lines pass them by, burns and sinks, along with their hopes of becoming the thriving city of their founders’ dreams. Years afterward, at low tide, old timers will point to the still-visible hulk of her boiler and sigh, “There lies the Mary Disston.” As local legends go, the story is a fine one. And like many local legends, it may not be entirely true.

acquired four million acres of Florida land, helping the state shift a massive debt and transacting what the New York Times called the “largest purchase of land ever made by a single person in the world.” The Disston Purchase opened the way for railroad development in Pinellas County and gave Ham with the idea for “Disston City”: a 25-square-mile model city of 50,000 covering much of today’s Gulfport. Any man who names a city after himself should name at least one ship after his mother, and that is precisely what Hamilton Disston did. But he may have come to regret this, as the Mary Disston quickly acquired the nickname “Dirty Mary” due to the foul smoke that belched from her stack, sometimes covering everything aboard with soot. In fact, complaining about the Dirty Mary’s prodigious exhaust as well as her habit of delivering the mail late became something of a pastime for readers of the Manatee River Journal in the 1890s, leading one weary scribbler to exclaim, “I shall have to quit loving you if you don’t keep quiet about the Mary Disston.” Another certainty is that there is a wreck located about 250 yards off Williams Pier – just about where residents’ stories place the sinking of the Mary. A 1998 archaeological survey of Gulfport’s coastline used metal detectors to trace the size and shape of a debris field that matches the dimensions of the Mary Disston (adjusting for tides and decomposition). However, the site’s poor visibility and a reluctance to destroy whatever evidence may be hidden under the muck prevented archaeologists from excavating, so no identifying features or artifacts were found. Researchers named the spot the Mary Disston Site, but could not positively confirm that it was her. The survey, combined with local accounts of the incident collected by the Gulfport Historical Society, was enough to convince Gulfport’s Historical Preservation Committee to erect the unique “Window on the Past” exhibit that allows Williams Pier visitors to visualize a

people of Gulfport.” Last spring alone fundraising and sponsorship clocked in at $10,000, Mallory said. Back in the 90s In 1991, Mallory graduated from Lakewood High School and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays nearly immediately after. It’s no surprise – Mallory was an all-around athlete with plenty of talent. He gave up a full ride to the University of Florida as a quarterback and a full ride for Western Kentucky University as a basketball player. “Toronto paid the money. As a 19-year-old out of high school, being offered a contract for over six figures was a no brainer for me,” Mallory said. Mallory played for the Blue Jays for five years in the states before ending his career living and playing ball in Regina, Saskatchewan for the same team. At 25, he got the call that his ca-
reer with the Blue Jays had come to an end. “Sports was my out, my family’s out,” Mallory said. “If I had a chance to do it all over again I would still do baseball. I was the least interested in it of the three options, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity it gave me.” In retrospect, Mallory describes the sport as a “thinking man’s game.” “For me, baseball is safer,” Mallory said. “It made me grow up really fast. You have to learn to cook, learn who you can trust, and I was up for the challenge.” Life After Ball After returning from Canada, Mallory lived in Tallahassee for nine years working as a landscaper after visiting friends in the area for what was supposed to be a short trip. Nearly a decade later, and the pitcher was working as a horticulture specialist for the City of St.
Petersburg Parks Department. He’s been the owner of a landscaping company, a trucking company, a candidate for Pinellas County Property Appraiser and is now looking to give back to the community that raised him. Mallory started as Gulfport Little League President by coaching four year olds in 2019 – against the norm, he insists on staying with the same kids. The father of four says he treasures time with young athletes. “They’re very energetic. There can be a challenge to keep the focus there,” Mallory said. “I just like to teach the kids, I want to see how far they can go. There’s a legit amount that has a potential to go on with this.” The dates are still up in the air, but Mallory confirms that the Fall Ball games and practice will most likely begin later in September and will continue to abide by CDC guidelines. Ray Domingo Celebrates Gulfport Artists with GeckoFest Studio Show Just a few blocks from the wildly colorful street festival that is GeckoFest, Gulfport artist Ray Domingo’s studio at 2620 Beach Blvd. S. was filled with local artists displaying signature work at Gulfport’s newest one-day outdoor exhibit, the RightBrain Show, Saturday, September 4. According to Domingo, who curated and created the event, the concept was simple. “The right side of the brain is supposed to be the artistic side,” he said. “We have eight artists – two that are partnerships – and I was looking for purely raw talent.” Despite debuting on the same day as GeckoFest to lure crowds, initial attendance was sparse due to lack of promotion, Domingo said. “I’m a little disappointed that we haven’t channeled much attendance from GeckoFest. It was my idea that RightBrain would be an addition to the festival instead of a distraction,” Domingo said on Saturday. “I want to do this again with the proper promotion.” GMC President Barbara Banno notes that while the event was approved, most promotion falls to the event’s coordinator.

“I will say that we are really happy about Ray’s involvement and effort with his show,” Banno said on Monday, September 6. “Moving forward, we will have to be more clear about it next time.” Even without a large crowd, artist participation was notable; creators appreciated the exposure and Domingo’s eagerness to not charge for
a spot in the show. “We got a decent amount of traction for the heat,” said mixed media artist M. C. Romanaux. Words from the Artists The youngest creator at RightBrain, at just 19, was Riley Pitzen, a Gulfport-based, hyper-realistic art-

ist, who Domingo introduces as “a young prodigy.” Pitzen himself works part-time and learned to create almost photographic-like portraits from watching Youtube videos. A quick glance at Pitzen’s portrait of Muhammad Ali, most might not realize it’s forged from graphite, not pixels. “I realized I could do this when I drew Abraham Lincoln a few years ago,” Pitzen said. “I try and choose
influential people throughout history.” On the flip side, artist Dorian Angello showed off his mixed-media and almost twisted photographs. Memorably, he showcased baby doll body parts re-purposed into mini-sculptures and plant pots. “Oh, it’s just because I’m deranged,” Angello said. “I like working with found objects because they can be precious, or in my case, creepy. It’s goofy, it’s fun,

and it deals with the idea that as our parents are dying, it’s all falling on us.” “I’ve never done anything like this before,” Domingo said. “Despite everything, it’s been wonderful. The artists enjoyed people seeing their work, and what they’ve displayed has just been a success.” If you missed the first-annual show, you can find links to the works of the participating artists with this article at thegabber.com.

the gabs Where were you on 9/11/2001? Photos by Gabrielle Reeder
Pia Jordan, Maryland: “On 9/11 I was at work. I worked at a government television station and our administrative assistant got a call from her husband about a plane that had gone into one of the buildings in New York. And so we sat there, pulled out the television so we could all watch and then we saw all the anchors, they seemed all like they didn’t know what was going on because we were watching the coverage. Then, I believe we saw when the second plane went into the building, the other World Trade Center and then they said there was a plane missing. In my mind I’m going, ‘Okay where’s this plane that they don’t know and where is it gonna hit. I know one hit the Pentagon.’ I was thinking to myself, ‘If they’re hitting our money source, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon which is our military strength. Next, I guess it would be the White House or the Capital.’ But as we know, the people on that plane, which is so sad, they overpowered whoever was trying to take over the plane and they crashed in Pennsylvania. So basically I was there just sitting watching and my kids were in school, but I thought the best place for them was to stay in school. So, I wasn’t going to go pick them up because we didn’t know what was going on in the world at that time.”

Dr. Basha Jordan, Jr., Baltimore: “9/11 I was in my home in Randallstown which is about seven miles from Baltimore. I owned a ranch out there where I raised horses and I was just getting up out of my bed and I had a television in my bedroom. I turned the television on and I saw this plane fly into The World Trade Center. I couldn’t believe it. So I turned the volume up and the news reporters were on there talking about what was going on. I was totally devastated and to validate what was going on, I called my best friend to ask him, ‘Was this real?’ and he said he was watching it on television as well. Then, another plane came in and flew into this building and my heart went out to the people in the building and I’m thinking, ‘Will these terrorists come to where we are?’ And so, they were saying that the terrorists were also going into the Pentagon and I knew at that moment that America was in trouble. And so I just started praying for America. And I was hoping that the White House or the Capitol wouldn’t be next.”

Cheryl Fry, Clearwater: “I was in New Jersey and I was off that morning when the planes hit the building, watching TV. I got a call from my sister that said ‘Do you know what’s happening right now?’ I said no and she said turn on the tv. I did and I said, ‘Oh somebody probably just, you know, flew the plane into the wrong...’ Maybe they were on drugs or whatever. But it soon kind of became bigger than that, obviously it was bigger than that. It was very scary. So I was able to see the building implode from the balcony of my parents’ apartment. I was a pharmacist, am a pharmacist, at the time and had to be called to work. I’ll never forget it.”
Carla Evans, Clearwater: “On the day I was working at Publix. I had the morning shift, and I was working in their back office. That’s where I started hearing my coworkers saying something’s going on and I tried to call my parents to see what was going on since I was working. I couldn’t get through because the lines were all backed up, but later found out about 9/11 and after my shift went home, watched the news and learned what was going on and watched via the news, the towers fall and followed the aftermath. My family’s in firefighting and still to this day remember the firefighters that we lost and the citizens that we lost on that horrible day.”

"I can walk barefoot on the beach again."
Local acupuncture clinic is treating the untreatable peripheral neuropathy with incredible results. Pain comes in many shapes and sizes. One of the most debilitating being the burning and tingling that comes with peripheral neuropathy. A disease that comes with years of shooting, stabbing pain that gradually ends in numbness, balance problems and on occasion, amputations. A disease that was once classified as irreparable. Jan Z. of St. Pete was facing such a fate. “I stopped golfing. I wasn’t taking walks on the beach with my husband. I was living on gabapentin and antidepressants and everywhere I went; my doctor, the specialists, the pain institute, told me there was no cure. How are you supposed to live your life knowing that everyday brings pain and suffering?” Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves, commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. This causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. Most peripheral neuropathy sufferers experience a heightened sensitivity to touch making it almost impossible for those diagnosed to even wear shoes, much less enjoy life. That is until she found Dr. Rebecca Gibbons of Achieve Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine here in St. Petersburg, FL.
Dr. Gibbons and her staff have pioneered a cutting edge, medical solution to treat neuropathy, eliminate or greatly reduce its symptoms and give people their lives back. They’re doing it without the use of prescription medications and invasive surgeries. “Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves preventing them from dying off,” tells Dr. Gibbons. “We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent. ATP therapy is like watering a plant. This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair.” The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained more than 85% nerve damage Achieve Acupuncture offers hope where there once was none. Three months later Jan Z. is thrilled with her progress, “I can walk barefoot on the beach again!”
