The two main musicians who make up postmodern jazz band Hot Tonic rolled into Gulfport less than a year ago for a quick jam. Now, they’re playing local stages six days a week.

While there might be up to 10 people filling the stage for a Hot Tonic show, the root of their sound lies in the pairing

of Victoria Woods and Josh Hindmarsh.

She’s a 29-year-old from Columbus, Ohio on double bass and lead locals; he’s a 44-year-old from rural New Zealand on guitar and backup. The duo came together in Hot Tonic continued on page 18

Gulfport Officials Look at Solutions After Third Crash at Trolley Market Square For the third time since opening in 2019, Gulfport’s Trolley Market Square is covered in caution tape, awaiting repair after a vehicle crash – most recently on Saturday, September 25 around 2 a.m.

Ronald Hester, 68, of St. Petersburg crashed into the 49th Street-facing entrance of the park at 4900 Tangerine Ave. S., while traveling westbound across 49th Street in a 1993 Chevy pickup truck early Saturday morning.

According to the Gulfport Police Department, Hester fled the scene on foot and was identified and arrested by Gulfport Police officers while being treated for injuries at a nearby hospital.

“There was a blood trail leading to the 1800 block of 49th Street,” said GPD Public Information Officer Thomas Woodman. “While Gulfport officers were investigating the scene, [Hester] had called the St. Petersburg Fire Department to his home for injuries related to the crash.”

Hester was unlicensed and charged with a careless driving citation, a misdemeanor for leaving the scene of an accident and a habitual traffic offender felony.

“He claims he was robbed by knife while driving the vehicle,” Woodman said. “There is nothing indicating that there was anyone else in the

Gulfport Supports Keith Stillwagon’s Recovery

“He’s still recovering, but he’s on the mend,” Michele said. “He’s feeling good for the first time in a while, and he’s anxious to come home.”

Originally, Stillwagon, 77, was admitted after overheating while painting one of his fantastical Florida murals.

The mural remains unfinished, much to Stillwagon’s dismay.

“He’s going to be the one to finish it,” Michele said, sitting not far from one of his works outside Liberty Tax Service on Saturday. “We were thinking of finding someone else to finish it and he just shook his head ‘No.’ As soon as he gets healthy... he’s determined.”

Gulfport Shows Up

“Everything here is donated from people in the community,” Taylor said while juggling a plate of Pia’s lasagna. “[Keith] can’t believe all the community is doing,” said Michele.

Gulfport’s Pink Deli, Fresh Bread and a New Coffee Fix

The Funky Flamingo sells a quirky collection of jams and jellies, among other things.

Pink Lemonade Gulfport has been home to produce and deli shop the Funky Flamingo, 1418 58th St. S., for one year as of the store’s ribbon cutting on Saturday, October 2.

Owner Anita McLaughlin says the milestone that she shares with her 60th birthday is bittersweet.

McLaughlin originally opened the shop with son Christopher Clark and his husband Thomas Clark in August of 2020. The two died within weeks of each other in February of this year.

“I’m not the one who should be speaking here today,” McLaughlin said on Saturday, “rather, Chris and Tommy should have been. Unfortunately we were dealt lemons, so today those lemons are now pink lemonade.”

Despite facing some financial hardship, the colorful market has maintained its reputation as a cornerstone for fresh, local food.

“We’re picking up for sure, but we had a couple of scary months,” McLaughlin said. “I get a lot of people my age, people from the neighborhood.

They trust us.”

Owner Marion Davis, who previously owned Blessed by the Best Hair Salon in St. Petersburg, says the walk-up is a chance to bring generational wealth to her family, starting with her son, Joshua.

“When I told my son he jumped right into it,” Davis said. “He started learning to make coffee, coming up with the names...if you go in, he’s the barista.”

Eventually, Davis plans to convert the shop into a sit-down diner, but for now she’s renting the area to anyone who needs a space until the time for renovation comes.

In just the last month, there have been plans for a pop-up market and a podcast studio.

Petty in the Park

October Concert Series Kicks Off with Tom Petty Tribute Band

The crowd for The Tom Petty Experience during the initial October Concert Series at Horan Park on October 1.

If you didn’t know better, you might think it was the Florida rock legend Tom Petty himself singing to the crowd for the opening of the October Concert Series in Horan Park.

The Petty Experience performed for hundreds during the 7 p.m. October 1 show that kicked off the St. Pete Beach series.

Lead singer Davy Alder wore dark sunglasses throughout the show, a respectable homage to Petty, his rock muse.

“I’m a mega Tom Petty fan,” said Alder. “I’ve seen him 35, 36 times

over three continents.”

Originally from Newcastle, England, Alder has played truckstops, toured Holland and traveled the U.S. playing in more than 25 different bands. But it was love that brought him to St. Petersburg, where he settled at last.

The five-member group – a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drummer, bassist and keyboard – opened the show with an uptempo cover of “Around the Roses.” The crowd joined in with foot tapping, dancing and picnicking on the grass.

One fan stood in front of the stage, flossing and two-stepping during “I Need To Know,” and another dressed in a navy blue “Petty Squad” shirt sang every lyric.

The Petty Experience plays next on October 15 at Three Daughters Brewing, during the week of Tom Petty’s birthday.

Saturday, October 2 more than 600 Women’s Rights Marches around the nation rallied in protest of recent restrictive abortion laws. In St. Petersburg, residents and officials marched at the Bans Off Our Bodies Rally at Vinoy Park.

The event was one of many shadowing the fifth Women’s March in

Washington, D.C. that same day, with protesters responding to the Supreme Court’s decision not to block the recent Texas abortion law that prevents women from having abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

Opponents of the law say that many women are not aware they are pregnant in that time period. Abortion re-

strictions are on the table in at least 47 states, according to NPR. Among the notable attendees were Florida Representative Charlie Crist and Caprice Edmond – the Pinellas School Board Member who is fighting for masks in schools.

“Let us be clear: Keep your bans off our bodies!” Tomalin said at the end of her speech. The crowd erupted.

This year’s 28th annual fishing line cleanup is a self-led, two-week process that began October 4 and will last through October 18. Volunteers use their own vessels to travel to their assigned habitats and remove fishing line.

“The primary goal...is to reduce the threats posed by fishing gear in the environment,” said Jeff Liechty, a Coastal Biologist for Audubon Florida. “When a bird gets accidentally hooked, or a fishing line gets caught on mangroves or piers, and anglers

cut the line, that line stays in the environment and birds can get tangled and end up dying of dehydration.”

Even the most experienced angler can contribute to fishing line debris in the ecosystem, according to Liechty, but you can take precautions.

“Cutting the line may be the easy thing to do, but we urge anglers to clear their gear,” Liechty said.

If a bird is caught in a fishing line, an angler should treat the bird how they would a fish, with caution. Reel the bird in, remove the line and the barb before releasing it back into the wild.

“If you hook a bird and cut the line, it will fly back to its nest trailing that line, which can get caught in the tree and not only kill that bird,” Liechty said, “but others in the colony as well.”

Though the focus of the cleanup is to remove fishing line from habitats, Liechty said volunteers must sometimes rescue birds as well.

“Birds dying in this way is senseless, and removing fishing line from nesting and roosting islands is important to conserving these iconic Florida birds,” Liechty said.

“I could hear Victoria’s groove in the bass just after the first few beats,” Hindmarsh said. “Within four beats I knew she could play and what she was doing spoke to me.”

Woods, a third generation big band leader whose father was the marching band director at Ohio State University for 38 years, took to leading the group naturally.

“I play music because there’s nothing else I want to do,” she said.

Should I Stay or Should I Go? In November 2020, the first person they met in Gulfport was local arts supporter and Airbnb host Larry Enlow, who rented his art house to the duo for a month.

“Larry came out in a tie-dyed Black Lives Matter shirt with a bottle of champagne and we knew it was a good part of Florida,” Woods recalled. “We were just gonna stay for the month and see what the local music scene was about.”

Soon, they had gigs booked.

By the end of their stay, they had a choice: make the drive back to frigid Ohio in the dead of winter, or stay and sleep in their van. The musicians quickly chose the latter.

“We faced the professional dilemma of sleeping in parking lots,” Woods said.

Thankfully, the nomadic life was short-lived.

“Gulfport appreciated creativity

Staying put is new for both Woods and Hindmarsh, who played a handful of New Zealand and Australian music festivals before the shutdowns.

“Once everything opens up, we’re definitely planning on some more traveling gigs,” Woods said.

and Hindmarsh on guitar, the band formed into variations of a tenpiece ensemble: a party band and an acoustic group, and sometimes a little of everything.

The shifting lineup is born of necessity. Ten people fitting into schedules and small stages isn’t always feasible, and not every venue can contain the sound of big band. The entire ensemble includes a keyboard, drums, trombone, trumpet and saxophone – and occasionally a second guitar.

Whatever the lineup, the group brings big energy to regular gigs at the Taphouse, The Floridian, the Tiki Bar & Grille and wherever else they end up in one of their two incarnations, depending on the scene.

“We don’t have big rehearsals,” Hindmarsh said. “Everything happens on the stage. And that’s the way we like it.”

The group performed at the Clearwater Jazz Holiday in June and is slated to partner with ROB Galleries, an international gallery group that has locations in Rome, Orlando and in Gulfport starting 2023.

“We just are so thankful to the community, especially the Gulfport community, for supporting us,” Woods said. “It’s surreal.”

Gulfport Arts Center Unveils Its First Exhibit A flurry of blended black and white as well as color saturated photographs, A Gulfport Sight and Sound Experience II, by local photographer Larry Busby debuted at the Catherine Hickman Theater Lobby, 5501 27th Ave. S., on Friday, October 1.

The gallery is Busby’s vision of modern Gulfport twinged with memories of the past. Proceeds from art sold benefit the Gulfport Arts Center, which sponsored the show.

Opening night was studded with local stars like Gecko Queen Elizabeth Hendricks, artist Ray Domingo and Elizabeth Neily, who is pictured in a number of Busby’s photographs and attended the event wearing the same dress she posed in.

A historical Florida storyteller and a Gulfport-based fiber artist, Neily was Busby’s first choice when searching for a muse.

“He asked to photograph me because I do living history...I make costumes, period clothing,” Neily said on Friday night. “I decided to

The artist roamed the event, explaining each photograph’s significance in the exhibit.

“I thought about doing just black and white photographs for this, but that’s pretty boring,” Busby said. “I hand digitized each one to play with the color and give a creative twist to the idea.”

Busby shot memorable spots in the city, including the Gulfport Beach volleyball courts in the middle of a scrimmage, waving children at Trolley Market Square, and the Gulfport History Museum – all with his special touch of color and grayscale.

“I don’t like dull photographs,” Busby said. “I like bright and upbeat colors.”

A focal point of the night, musician Berkeley Grimball played his original instrument, the podkora, while leading his group, the Pod Harp Orchestra, in harmony.

The appropriate candidate should have news reporting experience/and or experience with local government. Position requires in-person attendance at meetings at least twice a month.
