voices Remembering History Dear Editor: I just read James Schnur’s Part 8 article about Boca Ciega High School and busing. It caught my interest because my father, Charles Tony Sergent, was a teacher at Boca Ciega from 1977 to 1992. John Demps was the principal during part of his time there and my dad spoke highly of him.

I’m a graduate of the Gibbs High class of 1981. I was Tina Sergent back then; I’ve since married and now live in Atlanta. I remember when busing started in 1971. I was 7 years old and in third grade at Westgate Elementary, and we had four Black girls in my class. To this day, I still remember their first names, and I remember that they were called the “bus students” and their names were listed at the end of the roll. I seem to remember their names being typed in red ink. Two of my cousins went to Dixie Hollins [now Hollins High School] in 1971 when the riots broke out. I was too young to really appreciate what was going on back then.

I write a blog, and since it’s been 50 years since the riots, I was doing some research about that time, which is how I came across your article. While I’m glad that blatant discrimination backed by the law has, for the most part, ended, it breaks my heart to see so much racial strife still in this country. Enough About Me Dear Editor: While my vanity was flattered by the gargantuan photo of me (which I did not supply this time) in your article “Radical Inclusion” about the Gateway: Gulfport Poets book [October 14, 2021], I need to correct some misperceptions. Our new poet laureate is Rob McCabe. Two: I was hoping the focus would be on the contributing poets and their work and not on me as editor. And I was somewhat disappointed that Marge Davis was not

A (Tiny) Peek at the Costumes of Gecko Ball Each Gecko season, Gulfportians make their way to the Gulfport Casino Ballroom for a night of dancing, costumes, art auctions and “Geckotinis” (lime green martinis) that is the annual Gecko Ball.

The Gabber has a sneak preview of the Gecko Bandstand-themed garb that will reign at the Saturday, October 23 event – with some attendees preferring mystery and others sharing all their secrets.

The colorful characters in question? Three past Gecko Queens.

In former local seamster and 2018 Queen Jon Ziegler’s case, he’ll never tell.

“I don’t reveal my costume until the night of the ball,” Ziegler said.

“I’m not going to say, but it is 80s-inspired.”

Ziegler, known for his elaborate Gecko Ball costumes, learned to sew in adolescence, but his grandmother only taught him the basics of hemming pants and adjusting tears. Today, the Gulfport personality constructs all of his Gecko Ball costumes himself, something he’s done since the first modern ball over 10 years ago.

“People love to ask me what I’m working on – what I’m going to show up in,” Ziegler said. “But it’s just more fun this way.”

bright colors, is adding a Bohemian twist to the 1980s theme. She reveals her purple-hued bell bottoms, which is part of a lightly printed tie-dyed set.

“It’s Bohemian with the 80s flair, you know, because of the bell bottoms,” Robinson said. “I came around when the hippie thing was happening, so I’m having fun wearing something a little different.”

At Hendricks’ debut ball, she’ll need to turn out the lights for a grand reveal.

The Canadian native plans to wear a glow-in-the-dark cape that can be twisted into rainbow wings, an LED cocoon or a flowing blanket of lights that she will overlay with an ABBA-inspired outfit.

“I may do a little dance at the ball,” Hendricks said. “That is, if I can get them to turn the lights off.”

Woodson Windfall

African American Museum Announces $27 Million Partnership The Woodson African American Museum of Florida – previously The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum – has long sought funds for a new, improved facility in South St. Petersburg’s historic “The Deuces” neighborhood.

In a big win for the museum, the Woodson recently partnered with Pinellas Community Foundation (PCF) to raise $27 million for the new space, an effort that the museum was previously facing alone.

So far, the City of St. Petersburg has provided $700,000 and 5.5 acres of land for the future 29,000-square-foot facility across from the Historic Manhattan Casino.

But even with the city’s help, the museum faced major fundraising hurdles. That’s where PCF steps in.

to a space that limits or narrowly defines its impact rather than boldly celebrating its importance,” said Duggan Cooley, CEO of PCF. “A purpose-built museum for African American history and culture raises the prominence of The Woodson and all that means to our community.”

The dual fundraising effort will combine community causes for Black art with PCF’s known connections for charity efforts.

In the meantime, the yellow building at 2240 9th Ave. S., which was originally a community center in the historically Black neighbor-

hood of Jordan Park, has to find other ways to show its exhibits.

Due to the temperature limitations and small space, the museum’s recent exhibit, REVERBERATIONS, hung in downtown’s James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art. “The state of Florida deserves a properly constructed museum dedicated to showcasing the African American experience throughout Florida and beyond,” said Terri Lipsey Scott, executive director of the Woodson.

Amendment 1: Limiting City Council Elections to Voters in the Applicable Council District and Making Related Changes

A Look at Charter Amendments on the Ballot

CITY OF ST. PETERSBURG

In primaries, only voters in each district may vote for St. Petersburg City Council candidates running in that district; however, the general elections are citywide – meaning, any voter in the city may vote for candidates of all districts. This amendment would change the charter to eliminate citywide voting for council candidates.

Voters will also decide whether a candidate who receives more than 50% of the votes in the primary (first round election) will win by default.

Amendment 2: Establishing New Process for Drawing District Boundaries for Election of City Council Members

The November 2 election will determine the new St. Petersburg mayor and new councilmembers, but voters will also get the chance to change the

city charter, something that only happens once every 10 years.

In 2021, there are seven amendments to consider.

The second amendment would draw new district boundaries on voting zones for city council seats.

Amendment 3: Establishing an Equity Framework and Chief Equity Officer for City Government Establishing a Requirement for Charter-protected Equity Funding Residents will get the chance to vote for an “equity framework” for the City of St. Petersburg. The initiative will be composed of an equity action plan and create a Chief Equity Officer position to ensure equality in the city.

“Analysis of demographic and economic data for Pinellas County indicates that the region’s economy would benefit from eliminating equity gaps based on race, ethnicity, or other immutable characteristics,” the city states.

The city would also regularly assess and report on the framework.

Amendment 4: Establishing a Requirement for Charter-Protected Equity Funding Limiting equity gaps isn’t exactly a concrete plan, but with a “yes” vote, the city’s new administration would require funding on equity-related issues.

The appointed “charter-protected equity funding” will not be used for anything other than addressing equity gaps.

The city says this change would provide a fairer system of representation.

An appointed redistricting commission will vote on the district boundaries.

“The new process would occur every 10 years and maintain the existing nine-member citizens commission appointed by the mayor and council members,” the city states in the official report.

For one, the city administrator will be required to be a St. Petersburg resident. The changes would also state that the city clerk works for both the mayor and city council, and can be removed if both parties agree.

Originally based in a food truck, Sara Fludd’s Pop Goes the Waffle was one of a handful of businesses chosen from more than 9,000 applicants to receive a $10,000 grant and a four-month mentorship ​​from Hello Alice and PepsiCo as part of female-founded Stacy’s Rise Project.

The program is named after Stacy’s Pita Chips founder Stacy Madison, and gives an executive style package and multi-thousand-dollar funds to other female businesses annually.

Waffle baker Fludd applied thinking she had a slim shot of being chosen, but with her Gulfport storefront opening on Tangerine Avenue this February or March, she opted for the potential support.

It was August when she received a phone call informing her that Pop Goes the Waffle had been shortlisted as a potential recipient.

“I sat on the floor after I got the phone call thinking, ‘No way I’m going to win, but it’s an honor to be a finalist,’” Fludd said. “I went in thinking that, and left the call as a winner.”

Since 2017, South Carolina-native Fludd has sold her grab-andgo breakfast (and lunch) desserts from her teal food truck around Tampa Bay.

Battle of the Brains

Bogie Takes Second Place in Academic Team Match It’s after school hours, but on Thursday, October 7, the Boca Ciega High School library is packed with students and faculty in a Jeopardy!-style battle of wits that is the first Pinellas County Schools Academic Team match of the season.

Each team (Lakewood, Clearwater, Largo and Boca Ciega High School) has a captain, a buzzer and a graphing calculator with the goal of answering the most questions correctly – and a fear of deducted points for an incorrect answer.

In all, Largo High dominated the competition with 265 points. Boca Ciega followed with 145, with Lakewood tight on their heels at 115 and Clearwater hanging behind at 80.

It’s Bogie team captain and senior Olivia Miles’ first year as captain, and she and faculty team coach Lisa Erazmus have their work cut out for them.

“Most of the team from last year were seniors and graduated,” Miles says. “I love a nice challenge.”

The questions range from triangle statistics to side effects of scurvy, each one followed by either whisper screams amongst teammates or the immediate slap of buzzers.

The question-reader is former Bogie English teacher Lesley Cooper, who won $56,000 on the show, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” in 2012.

“I myself think nerds are cool,” Cooper said.

The first question: Which United States President sent troops to Little Rock, Arkansas?

Cooper was barely finished with the sentence before all four teams hit the buzzer.

Tiny paws and chunky dogs hit Beach Boulevard for the Gulfport Beach Bazaar’s Annual Pet Halloween Costume Contest on Saturday, October 16.

The contest – one that required hours of hat and bow tie adjusting – doubles as a fundraiser for Gulfport’s Get Rescued, an animal rescue benefit event in February.

For Bazaar owners Gini and Mike Fagan, the now outdoor

Recalling Lessons Learned from the 1921 Hurricane

I don’t have to remind you that it’s still hurricane season. But what you may not know is that October 25, 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of one of the most devastating storms in Gulfport’s history – the 1921 Tampa Bay Hurricane.

Gulfport’s recorded hurricane lore dates all the way back to the “Great Gale of 1848” – or, as one survivor put it, “the granddaddy of all hurricanes” – which swept in from the Gulf on September 23, 1848 as what would now be considered a Catego-

It literally changed the face of the map, slicing through the barrier islands to create John’s Pass, demolishing Passage Key (which has since returned – and become a popular spot for nude boating!), and toppling the newly constructed lighthouse on Egmont Key. Accounts tell of the Edwards family (keepers of the unfortunate lighthouse) riding out the storm in a skiff tied to a palmetto tree, and of the total destruction of Antonio Maximo Hernandez’s profitable fish rancho at Frenchman’s Creek (now Maximo Park).

But the 1921 Hurricane was different. Though technically weaker than its legendary counterpart, the tempest that slammed into Tarpon Springs on October 25, 1921 struck a region that was far more developed, with extensive railroads and streets, grand hotels and civic buildings, many more businesses and homes, and an estimated 27,000 more people. A 10.5-foot storm surge and 120 mph winds reduced Gulfport’s famous Casino to “a broken pile of kindling.” It tore away fishing piers, crumbled seawalls and damaged the local school. Perhaps hardest hit were Gulfport’s fishermen, whose boats – and livelihoods – were swamped.

And that was just Gulfport. Damage was also extensive in St. Petersburg, where the famous city pier (then a wooden structure) was destroyed, and in Tampa, where luxurious new neighborhoods were leveled and bayside parkways washed out. (Even a raft of cedar logs destined for Ybor’s famous cigar facto-

ries was smashed open, revealing – gasp! – several demijohns of bootleg rum.) Smaller towns and citrus groves throughout the Tampa Bay region also felt the impact, with contemporary estimates claiming that half the citrus crop was destroyed.

One local observer lamented that in the groves lining the way between St. Pete and Gulfport, “every tree was stripped.”

“People who have lived here all their lives will say, ‘I’ve lived through so many hurricanes!’” says Mary Burrell, who leads community outreach at Pinellas County Emergency Management. “But we haven’t gotten a direct hit since 1921.”

Paradoxically, some historians have noted that newspaper accounts began to shift in the days after the storm, from a despairing tenor – like the St. Petersburg Times October 27 declaration of ”Worst Hurricane in City’s History” – to an oddly affirmative note, as in the Tampa Morning Tribune’s assessment that “there will not be another storm of such severity during the life of anyone now living” (October 28). Indeed, Frank Pulver, owner of St. Pete’s Detroit Hotel, opined in the Times on November 1 that “any talk about the storm news keeping anybody away from St. Petersburg is tommyrot!”

This emphasis on the region’s swift recovery, some argue, was meant to encourage the steady stream of par-

adise-seekers who were moving to Florida during the state’s great land boom. And indeed, in the years that followed, the county’s population would grow by 250%, even as local real estate developers such as Walter Fuller and Jack Taylor created opulent establishments like the Jungle Prada Hotel (now Admiral Farragut Academy), The Roylat Hotel (now Stetson University College of Law) and the Pasadena Yacht & Country Club. But the climate eventually had its say: devastating hurricanes that struck Miami and South Florida in 1926 and 1928, together with the financial disaster of October 1929, effectively slowed the Florida frenzy – at least for a while.

If Tampa Bay boosters were a little too sanguine in their estimation of hurricane risk, they certainly are not alone. Popular myth insists that Tampa Bay is “protected” from hurricanes. By what? Take your pick: a Tocobaga “blessing,” a massive deposit of iron ore in the bay, or even regional geography.

“People have some pretty ‘scientific’ explanations about how Tampa Bay is formed, and why that protects us,” says Burrell. “That’s a natural reaction. People don’t want to face the possibility that something bad can happen.”

And while it is true that Tampa Bay has experienced a large number of “near misses” – from Hurricane Easy in 1950 to Hurricane

Irma in 2017 – hurricanes can pack a serious punch even without a direct hit. (2020’s Hurricane Eta was no exception, with an estimated $1.5 billion dollars in damage, mostly in Florida.) With the warming Gulf creating fertile ground for larger and more intense storms, and our population still rising at a brisk rate, Tampa Bay is classified as one of the United States’ most vulnerable locations for a catastrophic hurricane.

It’s important that communities consider their hurricane history, says Burrell, with an eye toward preparing for the future. “The question is: What would that look like if that was to happen today?”

The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council has created a truly horrifying scenario called Project Phoenix 2.0 to imagine just what that would look like. In the scenario, a Category 5 storm makes landfall around Indian Rocks – just 20 miles south of the 1921 hurricane’s path.

Burrell advises locals to follow Emergency Management’s guidance: know your risk, make a plan, stay informed and get involved.

And, of course, “just evacuate when you’re told. Bottom line.” This centennial may not be one we want to celebrate, but perhaps it is one we can learn from.

Performing Band of ‘Amazing Acro-Cats’ Comes to Gulfport A ragtag band of rescue felines – known as The Amazing Acro-Cats Featuring Tuna and the Rock Cats – are coming via tour bus to Gulfport’s Catherine Hickman Theater – and at least one will be on the sax.

Or, he will be pretending to play saxophone along with other furry shenanigans from Friday, October 22 to Sunday, October 24, in front of a live audience at 5501 27th Ave. S. Samantha Martin, the only human in the show, has spent the better part of the last 16 years training and traveling with the cats.

Martin, who describes her job as “Chief Executive Human,” has toured the Acro-Cats from her home in South Atlanta to as far as Seattle and everywhere in between.

But, as they say, herding cats ain’t easy.

“The show was a disaster at first,” Martin said. “Through trial and error, we got it. People started showing up in droves to see them perform.”

struments, jump through hoops, ride skateboards, teeter on balls and more as part of a two-hour performance that benefits Rock Cats Rescue Inc. The band was featured on the Netflix series “Cat People,” and has received national attention as a blend of circus tricks, a comedy show and a touring rescue effort.

“Most of them have been traveling since kitten-hood, so they’re

used to it,” Martin said. “They suffer some physical and mental deterioration when they’re not, which was the case during quarantine.”

Martin only “employs” rescue animals, and often brings homeless kittens on the road to find forever homes while visiting cat-loving communities.

The Hairy Details Before there were cats, there were rats.

Martin began her animal training career with a troupe of rats, which she says was much more straightforward than their easily spooked counterparts.

“Rats are way easier...If someone makes a loud noise, or has a weird hairdo, the cats will be affected,” she said. “Rats are not constantly surveying their environment like cats are. It used to be a struggle to get the cats to do anything, but I could always count on the chicken.”

“Soon after doing this, I realized I could help cats. I can take bottle babies on the road and when we stay in one place for a few days, I find them homes,” Martin said.

“I like the challenge and the independent nature of cats,” says trainer Samantha Martin.

“Animals need a job, and when it’s not safe to let them outside, they have so much pent up energy,” Martin said. “With cats, it’s about taking a more complicated look at the animal and working with their natural energy.”

Though Martin got her footing training the family dog, and eventually chickens at a chicken farm in Arkansas, it was her original circus cat “Tuna” that gave her the idea to incorporate house cats.

In 2002, she began working with the show’s namesake, Tuna, who she describes as a “brilliant, but

not affectionate cat.”

She taught Tuna paw work and how to ring a bell, and put together a rudimentary version of Acro-Cats with other rescue kitties.

“We had cats on horns, cats coming and going as they pleased – people were amazed,” Martin said. “I’m always worried after a rough show, but the failed tricks are the most popular. People love to laugh.”

“There is so much you can do with this concept,” said CraftArt Executive Director Katie Deits. “We’ve tied in a lot of community connections...

It’s time to start thinking more about the environment as a whole.”

The gallery is full of multimedia creations from Florida to Montana, featuring artistic creations of young environmentalist Greta Thunberg and out-there crafts, such as Casey McDonough’s sculpture made of dislocated fish bones collected from a red tide surge. “[Casey McDonough’s] wife wasn’t too happy about the smell,” said Elizabeth Neily, Special Projects manager at Florida CraftArt. “He melted the fish down in his backyard, apparently.”

The exhibit’s wild time is almost over, but art lovers and environmentalists are welcome to visit or attend related Zoom events until October 23.

Michael Dean Hawks (October 25, 1945 – October 6, 2021). Michael grew up in Wichita, Kansas and moved with his family to Florida in 1960. He enjoyed living in St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Roser Park. A 1964 graduate of Boca Ciega High, he started working at Maas Brothers in downtown St. Petersburg. After his adventures living in Oregon in the early 1970s, he traveled back and had three years of fun bartending at the ol’ Oyster Shucker on St. Pete Beach, renewing old and making new good friends. Mike then attended the Florida School of Dog Grooming and was good at it, working for London Pet Care in Miami. Michael was a generous and creative individual and learned the art of stained glass, gifting his family and friends with his cool, personalized work. He was a window blind manufacturer with Hunter Douglas in St. Pete for 30 years. After retirement, he continued to enjoy close relationships with his friends and family who loved his sincere nature and quick sense of humor.

When he moved to Lutheran Towers in South Pasadena he quickly made new friends and became a welcome asset, working the reception desk for the last 12 years.

Many of us were delighted and amazed with his newfound affinity for electronics at this time, and he found joy in successfully explor-

ing new technological devices and gadgets, making them work for him without a hitch. A quiet, insightful man, Mike was always hopeful and of strong courage when the situation warranted it. He passed away unexpectedly while recovering from recent open heart surgery.

William Arthur “Kego” Muth Jr. passed away on September 21, 2021 from a compromised immune system. Born in Burbank CA, he lived most of his life in various cities in Florida and went to school in St. Petersburg. He loved and lived on the beaches. His favorite pastimes were music, auto racing, football and karate. Kego worked as a skilled arborist, landscaper and roofer. He had a great sense of humor and lived his life, free on his own terms, at a pace he called “test driving.”

He is survived by his mother, Pamela Taylor, his sons William Arthur Muth III, Samual Elijah, Brian Miller and daughter Hailey Ann, along with two sisters, Carrie Jo and Christel Louise. He was predeceased by his father, William Arthur Muth Sr. and his brother David Taylor. He will be dearly missed and remembered with love. There will be a celebration of life on the beach, time and location pending.

"SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK" Local clinic has a medical solution for peripheral neuropathy.

“It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light.
