Shell Key Adventure By Cameron Healy

CAMERON HEALY

Follow along on a Tierra Verde kayak tour through mangrove tunnels to reach Irma’s Pass on Shell Key Preserve.

You don’t have to travel to places like the Everglades for a nature-oriented Florida experience. Take a look at all the opportunities south Pinellas offers. One opportunity in particular can be a guided kayak trip through mangroves to Shell Key Preserve. Tierra Verde has a public drop-in

entrance for kayak groups and individuals (2800 Pinellas Bayway South), right before the Fort De Soto toll. My group dragged our kayaks into the water and we began paddling toward our first mangrove tunnel. This tunnel goes directly through Sawyer Key, a barrier island comprised of mangroves.

REMEMBER: Today is the first day of the rest of your life!

Obituaries I looked at this week’s Gabber online, and I am so pleased with your editorial and Margo’s obit. Thank you! I have continued to think about the need to write one’s obit. It seems to me that no one knows what the deceased values the most in her/his life. If my family were to write my obit, they would probably not write about my struggle to complete an advanced degree in my 50’, nor understand my wanderlust for travel and the importance of my Gulfport friends. So I will write my own. Thanks for this opportunity. This of course means you have to outlive me. Hah! Just saying... —Andrea Covell, Gulfport

Book Reviews You guys did a book review a week or two ago on a book called Fireworks Every Night and the review was so well written that I went out and got the book and the book is fabulous. I just wanted to thank you and give you a thumbs up on the book review. —Margo Dalgetty, Gulfport

news Seniors and Storm Surge

A Rundown of the Nov. 7 Gulfport Council Presentations Do you have something that you think would better the city? Gulfport City Council has you covered. At least, they have a place where you can present your ideas. Following roll call, the first item on each meeting’s agenda is presentations. Here, city councilmembers invite people to speak about issues and topics important to them — and the city. Recently, Council has seen presentations from Pinellas County Commissioner René Flowers, and Dean Hay, a ISA certified Master Arborist. At the Nov. 7 meeting, three presentations were on the agenda, including celebrating the winners of this year’s Halloween decoration contest. Senior Center Updates The first presentation was short and sweet. Regina Buscemi, a newly appointed board member on the Senior Center Advisory Committee explained the role of the Gulfport Senior Center. “We’re tasked with determining the long- and short-term needs of Gulfport’s aging residents,” Buscemi said, with a laugh. People can join the GSC at 50. “We prepare recommendations for Gulfport, and serve as advocates for Gulfport’s aging community.” Among the various services offered by the GSC is the Welcome to Gulfport Packet. Anyone can get this packet online, but new residents get it when they set up their water service. While the GSC has various resources, a large problem they face is space. On average, 648 people visit the GSC every day. Because of this, the City wants to build a new GSC, one with more efficient space usage. “If you’ve ever been to the Senior Center, the rooms are so small,” said Buscemi. “I’m so glad we’re building this new one.”

CITY OF GULFPORT

By Patrick Heinzen

One of the Nov. 7 Gulfport Council presentations discussed the future of the Gulfport Senior Center.

Hurricane Readiness Following the celebration of the contest winners, Amanda Moore, director of the Gulf Program at the National Wildlife Federation, gave her presentation. The goals of the Gulf Program are to maintain ecosystems along the Gulf of Mexico, for the benefit of people and wildlife. Recently, they worked on a project across the Gulf of Mexico that uses storytelling and giving people learning experiences to impact people’s understanding of climate risk. The team at the Gulf Program made a film, looking at the experiences of people affected by climate change

in the Tampa Bay Area. Along with this, they took people on boat tours to learn about shoreline resiliency structures. “As a resident of Tampa bay, I can say that it is one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change in the country,” said Moore. Following the film screenings and boat tours, they surveyed participants to see what they learned. The Gulf Program found that after seeing the film, people were more likely to attend meetings to learn about city and county resilience. Along with this, participants said they were also 35% more likely to participate in hurricane preparedness meetings.

infrastructure minimizing flooding and erosion. Mangroves also serve as homes for creatures like fish, oysters, crab, and shrimp. What’s cool about mangroves are their natural tunnels. My group adventured through a skinny tunnel within Sawyer Key, then we headed toward the next tunnel in Summer Resort Key. While paddling to and from these tunnels, we made bird friends along the way: the double-crested cormorants. They have bright orange beaks and darker brown or black feathers. Cormorants love hanging around kayakers. When kayakers paddle, it moves the fish underneath enough for the cormorants to catch them. Since the water is shallow, I watched these goofy birds dive under my kayak and pop back up with squirming fish in their mouths. Summer Resort Key Once we arrived at Summer Resort Key, we were half way to our destination of Irma’s Pass on Shell Key Preserve. Summer Resort Key also consists only of mangroves, but these tunnels were wider and taller to pass through. We went through three tunnels where we saw a mangrove tree crab (Aratus pisonii) and an upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea).

Shell Key continued from cover

Sawyer Key has skinny mangrove tunnels.

As we approached Shell Key, we saw a large group of American White Pelicans collectively sunbathing on a sandbar. Like every northerner in America, these type of pelicans fly down to Florida for the winters, making them the ultimate snowbird. They are one of the largest North American birds with a 9-foot wing span, according to The National Audubon Society. Shell Key Preserve We took a break at Irma’s Pass at the north end of the preserve. It’s

named after Hurricane Irma when the storm cut a small pass through the middle of the key in September of 2017. Shell Key is full of barrier islands like the ones we went through. They are the first line of defense against any storms. According to Visit St. Pete, a channel existed between Shell Key’s north tip and the mainland of Pass-a-Grille in the early ‘90s. Over time, storms and tides sculpted the key. By 2015, the channel closed due to shifting sand, causing stagnant water. With the help of Hurricane Irma, there is now a natural passage allowing Gulf of Mexico water to enter the preserve. Families on boats enter the pass from the Gulf of Mexico, while kayak groups visit from within the preserve daily. This is a great place if you are in search of the prettiest shells. After Irma’s Pass, we made our way toward Pannama Island for one more mangrove tunnel. We spent the rest of our 4-mile adventure observing the waterfront homes and watching mullets leap out of the water. The overall trip took three-anda-half hours. It was an immersive experience for someone who hasn’t explored this unique spot of south Pinellas.

No Electric Trucks

Gulfport City Council Continues Their Spending By Patrick Heinzen

MONROE ROARK

Three of the four resolutions approved during the Nov. 7 Gulfport Council meeting focused on new vehicles for city works.

The City’s shopping isn’t slowing down. Following the adoption of the budget for the 2024 fiscal year, Gulfport City Council approves a series of resolutions making various purchases for the City. At the Nov. 7 Gulfport Council meeting, the City approved four resolutions to buy things for City operations. Three of the four resolutions approved during the meeting focused on new vehicles for City works.

Gulfport Marina Truck: Resolution 2023-101 The City approved a new 2024 work truck for the Gulfport Municipal Marina. The marina has a $40,000 budget for this, but the resolution included the possibility for a $6,000 budget amendment. Council chose from three options for the vehicles: A Ford F-150 regular cab pickup truck ($39,439); a Ford F-150 Super Crew hybrid pickup truck ($42,644);

and a Ford F-150 Lightning E-Truck ($45,780). This began a discussion that stretched throughout the meeting, about the viability and necessity for electric and hybrid vehicles in the City. Tom Nicholls, director of Gulfport Public Works, presented his research on which vehicle would work best for the City. He told Council the electric and hybrid vehicles wouldn’t be available until next year at the earliest. He also said the electric vehicle

• Sales Director & Part-time • Must be a self-starter • Make cold calls in person • Amiable personality • Familiar with Mac and Google docs • Local resident • Able to travel throughout S. Pinellas • Lift 25 lbs. • Provide own laptop • Work from home or office

would suffer from damages created by the salty air of the marina. Finally, he said, the hybrid’s fuel efficiency wouldn’t come into play, as the travel distances aren’t far enough. Council approved option one, with a no from Councilmember April Thanos (Ward I). Gulfport Building Maintenance Truck: Resolution 2023-102 This resolution followed a similar structure, looking at a new work van for the building maintenance division. The public works division budgeted $57,000 for this. The first option is a 2023 Chevrolet Express 3500 low -roof cargo van ($40,597.90). This vehicle is available immediately. Option two is a 2024 Ford Transit T-350 lowroof cargo van ($54,867). This vehicle would be available, at the earliest, in the spring of 2024. The third option is a 2024 Ford E-Transit T-350 low-roof cargo van ($56,738). This is the electric option, estimated available within a year. Nicholls explained that this new vehicle is not immediately necessary, but the current vehicle is due for replacement. Along with this, the electric vehicle would require maintenance in the future, as the current vehicle is 16 years old. However, an electric vehicle would need a battery replacement after 8-10 years. Despite this, Gulfport resident Richard Fried shared his opinion on the matter. “I’m sick and tired of talking about it and not doing anything about it,” said Fried. “We’re not carbon neutral. Bite the bullet. Suck it up. We all need to suck it up. I’m willing to suck it up. If you need to raise a few dollars, raise my taxes.” Thanos made a motion on option three, but did not receive a second. “Clearly, I’m outvoted again,” said Thanos. Council approved option one, with a no from Thanos.

Eco-boost truck for the Gulfport Fire Department. Pinellas County will reimburse 75% of the cost of this truck, up to $37,500. This truck replaces the Fire Chief’s current vehicle, which is now a backup vehicle at the station. Generally, Fire Department administrator vehicles get purchased through the Florida Sheriffs FSA23-VEL31.0 Bid. At this time, the two dealerships that are a part of this bid do not have any vehicles available. City staff was able to find a vehicle at AutoNation Ford in St. Petersburg for about $1,300 less than the contract price. While there is an electric option, it costs about 65% more, and there are none available. The resolution passed unanimously. Tasers for Gulfport Police Department: Resolution 2023-103 Gulfport Police Department will get 18 new Tasers, thanks to Resolution 2023-103. This resolution approves the purchase of 18 new Taser conducted energy weapons (CEW). Along with accessories and licenses, this will cost $46,080.02. The GPD has been using these “intermediate” weapons since 2005, provided by Axon Enterprises. Axon is the only manufacturer of these Tasers for law enforcement use. The warranty on these weapons is five years, and Axon will not support an agency’s use of any Tasers older than this. GPD currently uses Tasers that are at least six years old. In 2017, the City purchased 28 tasers for $36,000. Because of the significant

price increase, only the 18 patrol officers will have the new Tasers. “If we were to use a Taser, and it resulted in serious injury or death, Axon would not come to support us after the warranty is up,” said GPD Chief Robert Vincent. “To replace all of them would be over $100,000. I don’t like the price, but right now there isn’t really another option.” The resolution passed unanimously. Other Resolutions Resolution 2023-105 looks at increasing the Marina budget because of increased fuel prices. This will also lead to increased revenue for the marina. The Gulfport Marina experiences high levels of boat traffic annually, and because of this, the increased prices allow more money to come through the marina. Resolution 2023-106 approves a budget amendment that accounts for emergency expenses that came from Hurricane Idalia. These expenses totaled roughly $150,000. The resolution also approves emergency repairs. This includes a $27,525 payment to Enterprise Marine, and a $36,425 to Adams Construction Services. These were repairs that were made to the Casino dock, Veterans Park pier, and other damages from Idalia. 75% of the costs will get reimbursed by the Federal Government, with another 12.5% from the State of Florida. The remaining 12.5% is on the City. Both of these resolutions passed unanimously.

In true community fashion, Gulfportians of all ages — and all breeds! — honored veterans at the Gulfport Veterans Day parade on Nov. 11. Participants included the Gulfport Police Department, American Legion Post #125, the Boca Ciega High School marching band, US Navy Seabee veteran Tommy Bixler, Lynn Carr, and others who served or wished to honor those who have. Vice Mayor Paul Ray emceed the parade. Until 1954, the United States honored World War I veterans with Armistice Day on Nov. 11; President Dwight D. Eisenhower rededicated the holiday in 1954 to honor all veterans. business beat Mama Pearl’s and Sloppy Joe’s

Stay Up-to-Date With Pinellas Businesses

Owner Karen Koncsol runs the register while Chef Jackie Smit gets to cooking.

Gulfport’s Newest Breakfast Spot Originally from Ohio, this bread business expanded into a new breakfast spot on Tangerine Avenue. Mama Pearl’s officially opened Nov. 4 to the Gulfport community. Owner Karen Koncsol moved her business to Florida two years ago, but didn’t have a restaurant until now. She came across this Gulfport location earlier this year, and got right to work. Koncsol and her partner Chef Jackie Smit expressed excitement over the restaurant’s weekend opening. “This is a welcoming place for everyone,” Koncsol said. Mama Pearl’s offers $5 on-thego breakfast sandwiches, a $16.95 buffet-style breakfast, and special dessert breads. The buffet has ham egg bake, veggie egg bake, pancakes, waffles, potatoes, sausage and chorizo gravy with biscuits, and eggs benedict. The buffet comes with drink options such as coffee, juice, milk, and water.

Koncsol dedicated her business to her late mother, Pearl. Pearl has a mini photo gallery hanging on the restaurant’s wall. “The banana nut bread is her [Pearl] famous recipe,” said Koncsol. The business will not be open on Mondays. On Tuesdays, the togo sandwiches and desserts will be available, but no breakfast. Try the breakfast buffet Wednesday through Friday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. 5004 Tangerine Ave. S., Gulfport. 727-605-1444. “Best Taste” Award After a successful Taste of the Beaches Annual Taste Tour, the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce announced the “Best Taste” winner. Sloppy Joe’s on Treasure Island took home the “Best Taste” award for its Surf N’ Turf Burger. This flavorful creation caught the attention of foodies along the beaches.

Chef Jackie Smit in action.

Robin Miller, CEO of the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber congratulated the historic Key West bar on the “well-deserved win.” “Their Surf N’ Turf Burger really displayed the unique culinary scene in our community that makes it so special,” Miller said. The Chamber announced the award on Nov. 6. Meanwhile, the Taste of the Beaches Annual Taste Tour took place Oct. 7-15. Participants bought a ticket to taste select dishes at participating restaurants along the Pinellas beaches. This annual food “tour” celebrates the culinary diversity among the coastal community. After the eight-day event, Sloppy Joe’s left a lasting impression on participants, according to the Chamber. Keep an eye out for what restaurants partake in this beachy food tour next year. 10650 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island. arts Stuck in Hell

Off Central’s Latest Production: ‘No Exit’ By Marilyn Jozwik

STAGE PHOTOGRAPHY OF TAMPA

Off Central’s No Exit has meaty performances handled well by a seasoned cast.

Perhaps you’ve experienced being in the same room with a toxic person — an egotist, hypochondriac, pessimist, etc. — for a long time. It can seem like an eternity. People can make our lives hell, and Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit (at Off Central) demonstrated that. Alan Mohney, Jr. directed the production. In the 1944 existentialist play, three people are put together, in a room symbolizing hell. Cradeau (Comelio Aguilera) arrived first. He’s brought in by the Bellboy, who has an appropriate cool, detached demeanor (Anthony Gervais). His black suit and fire-red shirt and accents bring out the devil in him. Cradeau is followed by Inez (Jenna Jane) and then Estelle (Alexa Perez). They comment on their stark surroundings of a divan and two chairs, plus a mantle with a statue of Napoleon and a letter opener. Estelle desperately needs a mirror, saying, “I simply can’t go through all eternity without a mirror.” Cradeau seeks a toothbrush. They wonder where the instruments of torture are. Cradeau is immediately jumpy, calling the room “hideous,” complaining about the light. We learn early about

14

his obsession with his manhood when he tries to lift the statue of Napoleon and can’t. He projects what damnation will be like when he says he’s “always living with people I couldn’t stand.” Cradeau and Estelle think it is merely chance that thrusted the three together. But the perceptive, forthright Inez – who tells us “I’m not a polite person” – knows differently. “They leave nothing to chance,” she says. The three are meant to torture each other. And so, the three go on to tell their stories, hiding their misdeeds. At first they can’t understand why they are where they are, but Inez knows there is more to their lives. “People are not damned for nothing,” Inez said. With sadistic glee, Inez described the evil plot that brought her to this place. Then the others speak their truths, making themselves more odious with each detail of their sordid lives. As one revealed their weaknesses, the others pounced on the opportunities to make their hell-mates mad with jealousy, guilt, and indignation.

No Exit’s Cast and Performance These are meaty performances handled wonderfully by a seasoned cast. Aguilar’s Cradeau seethes with intensity magnified by his eternal feelings of insecurity. I loved Jane as Inez — her mocking tones, her stalking the others like a cat with a mouse, her hypnotic phrasing and menacing laugh. Inez’s smugness and sense of superiority ring true with Jane’s performance. Perez captured all the superficiality of Estelle, who until the end obsesses over her own looks and getting the man, any man. The lighting and sound nicely created scenes in which the trio saw into the world they left behind. I especially enjoyed Estelle watching her beau dance with another woman, her anger reaching a fever peak. Props also to the builder of the exit door, which must withstand repeated hard whacks as occupants try to escape. Off-Central Theater, 2260 1st Ave. S., St. Petersburg. Through Nov. 19: Thurs., 7:30 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 8 p.m.; Sun. 3 p.m. $15 Students/Industry, $35 General. 727-202-7019, theoffcentral. com.

food Sunshine State’s Cuban Sandwich

Where is the Best Cuban Sandwich in Gulfport? The Cubano is a staple in Floridian culture and cuisine, and you’ll find Cuban sandwiches on loads of menus here in the Sunshine State. In fact, there’s an on-going battle between Tampa and Miami over who was the first to ‘invent’ the sandwich stateside. (But I’m not taking sides.) Born from “mixto” sandwiches (sammies with mixes of meats and cheeses), the Cuban made its way north by way of cigar workers from Key West. But each region and restaurant in Florida puts their own, personal touches on the sandwich. Think additions like salami, lettuce, tomato, and onions, just to name a few. I employed the tastebuds of my best friends to help me sample these classic, Floridian sandwiches from three recommended Gulfport eateries: The North End Taphouse & Kitchen, Habana Café, Annex Coffee House, and the Citgo gas station. Before you derail over reviewing gas station food, let me say this: I am on a mission to find great food. As a chef and small business owner, I don’t discriminate locations. Whether it’s the most popular joint town, a hole-in-the-wall, or (gasp!) a gas station, if it serves good food that’s worth knowing about, I’m up for the adventure. While I wish I could have sampled every Cubano in our area, we chose to stay close to home for this one. Here’s the rundown of my personal favorite Cuban sandwiches in the Gulfport area. Most Flavorful Cuban Bread: CITGO Gas Station ($7.99) The CITGO gas station wins most flavorful bread, hands down. My friends who sampled with me said they’d give the bread alone “14 stars.” It’s buttered with a tasty (albeit, untraditional) combination of roasted garlic and herbs that adds depth of flavor to each bite. This Cuban is definitely less authentic than you would expect, given the seasonings, but it works. However, I really missed the

pickles. Sadly, our sandwich had two small pickle rounds found at only one end of the Cuban. CITGO also runs a “Mo’s Lunch Special” where you can get a Cuban and an aluminum (beer) for only $9.99. Some people may be leery of gas station food, and I don’t blame you. It’s a one-man-show behind the counter (the guy making the sandwiches also ran the register the day I ate) and proper food handling and sanitation can prove challenging. So if you’re willing to risk it, CITGO’s Cuban is worth a try, if only for bread itself. 5227 Gulfport Blvd. S.

but was disappointingly spare on the pickles. I also would have preferred more meat on my Cuban (as opposed to the thin, deli cold cuts). Perhaps it was my bad when ordering over the phone, but I assumed this “authentic” Cuban would have also come with shredded pork on it? So, be sure to ask for the “#4 pork” as an addition for $3.50 to get the full flavor. Insider tip: While you’re there, don’t pass up a side of Jo’s black beans ($4.95). When they’re not grossly over seasoned, they’re totally addicting and will round out your Cuban experience at Habana Café. 5402 Gulfport Blvd. S.

Most Cheese: Habana Café ($11.95) For a decent, Miami-style Cuban, head to Habana Café. Their sandwiches are deliciously buttered and ultra-thinly-pressed on fresh Cuban bread. Mine oozed gooey cheese, and dripped with mayo/mustard mix,

include them in this Cuban roundup as well. As a drive-through coffee stop, they have a limited kitchen, which may explain the modest Cuban. The bread was pressed so it was still crunchy yet soft, and it had melty Swiss cheese — two things I really enjoy in my Cuban. The sandwich came with a combo of salami, ham, and pork, but all deli slices and nothing shredded. Of all the Cuban sandwiches we sampled, this had the saddest amount of pickles — simply one thin slice on the entire sandwich. What’s up with that? I also prefer more mayo/mustard mix on my Cuban, so I was a little disappointed. But for a quick, $10 Cuban on-the-go, it’s not bad. Based on my experience, it would be helpful if Annex listed their operating hours somewhere online and also had a menu available online. But maybe they’re still working out the kinks seeing as they are rather new to the community. 5133 Gulfport Blvd. S.

Move Over Pub Subs: Gateway Subs for the Win By Morgan Banno

Other Items MORGAN BANNO

In South Pasadena, Gateway Subs packs a punch.

When I moved to Florida more than a decade ago, it didn’t take me long to catch onto Publix Subs. Between the warm breads, fresh veggies, wide arrays of meats, and the chicken tenders (my guilty pleasure), I was hooked. But what’s even better (and bigger) than Pub Subs are the sandwiches at Gateway Subs. Believe me when I say that once you try a sub from Gateway, Publix will look like child’s play. Located in South Pasadena, this locally owned eatery will forever change your sandwich game. And you definitely won’t go hungry. Menu Full of Flavor The menu at Gateway Subs is fun, eclectic, and vibrant. They serve the standards you’d expect from a sub shop: Spicy Italian ($8.60/$13.80); turkey and bacon ($8.30/$13.30); roast beef ($9.10/$14.40); and tuna salad ($8.60/$13.80). But they have some great combos completely unique to their brand. The Spice Mélange ($9.40/$14.40) comes with hot capicola, buffalo chicken breast, mayo, provolone, lettuce, onion, hot peppers, and hot garlic buffalo sauce with crumbled jalapeños chips. Call me weird but I really dig chips on a sandwich. I love spicy food and the more heat, the better. I opted for a fullsize E-Z Choice sub ($14.50) with spicy pepperoni and buffalo chick-

en breast, spinach, onion, hot peppers, provolone, chipotle mayo (my kryptonite), and Z’s tang sauce on a white hoagie bun. Fair warning: all of Gateway Subs are generously stuffed full of meat and toppings. Mine was absolutely fantastic, bursting with juicy chicken breast and layers of hot pepperoni, along with an abundance of fresh veggies. The flavors definitely packed a good punch, and now I’m completely addicted. In addition, I always enjoy a good veggie sub, and Gateway’s Salad Sammy ($7.30/$11.30) on a wheat hoagie totally hit the spot. It was

In addition to ginormous sandwiches, Gateway serves a few breakfast items on buttered croissants. For a lighter option, they turn any sub into a salad with the same fixings, or you can build your own salad (starting at $8.84). If you’re a coffee junkie, you’ve come to the right place. Gateway offers small batch, specialty coffee (with milk alternatives available; $.50 each) but they pride themselves on their cold brew ($3.61/$4.10). It takes eight hours to produce and the origin of their beans rotates periodically. Whether you enjoy a cappuccino or cortado, for a strong, bold brew, sip on Gateway’s coffee. They also have their own tea label ($3 each) with flavors such as hibiscus mint, peach Bellini and strawberry kiwi. Gateway Subs has two locations: the South Pasadena location as well as a store near the Grand Central District. Check their website for the most up-to-date menu. Gateway Subs, 2525 Pasadena Ave. S., South Pasadena, Open daily 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. 727-289-9634, gatewaysubs.com.
