Gulfport’s waterfront made local and national news after Tropical Storm Eta blew six boats ashore the night of November 11.

Tropical Storm Eta made landfall in Florida around 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11 near Cedar Key, with sustained winds of 50 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. The tropical-storm-force winds stretched 115 miles from the storm, and coincided with a high tide in the Tampa Bay area. Gulfport and surrounding waterfront cities, including St. Pete Beach, suffered flooding damage to homes and storefronts, and heavy debris littered the streets. “Gulfport experienced the worst flooding and storm surge since Hurricane Debby hit the town in 2000,” Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson told the Gabber on Wednesday, November 12. Local politics impact our daily lives more than anything happening on the national stage. If we start a land war in Asia, it won’t affect most of us on a day-to-day basis, but if we elect a city council that votes to outsource trash pickup, it matters if your garbage doesn’t get collected. At the Gabber, we believe in the power of local. That’s why this election season (yes, it’s election season again – Gulfport votes for two councilmembers on March 9, 2021 and qualifying begins in early December), the Gabber will make an historic change: We will endorse candidates for Gulfport’s city council elections. Well, technically, not the Gabber staff; we want to create an election board to determine who has the best interests of the city at heart. And we want five of you on that board. Here’s how it will work: The board will have a member from each of the city’s four wards, and one city-wide representative. The board will interview each candidate and attend the candidate debate, hosted by the Gabber and the Gulfport Merchants Chamber; then, they will announce their endorsement in the Gabber. Because Gulfport feels passionately about elections, we have some ground rules for the board: They must live in Gulfport, of course, and they may not be affiliated with or support any active campaign. Members may not work for the City of Gulfport, and must remain impartial on all public platforms, including social media. We hope that by creating this board, we amplify the voice of the community. After all, we’re stronger with you – and so is Gulfport. Interested in being on the board? Email elections@thegabber.com. – Cathy

voices Let’s Stay Involved Dear Editor: To all the wonderful people who make the Gabber a ray of sunshine and a source of local news every week. It was thrilling to hear that the owners and staff of the Gabber all voted... making the Gabber a 100% voting organization (caveat: voting status of freelancers not known.) As part of the Gulfport Votes 100% team, it’s exciting to hear when individuals and groups “get” the power that comes from playing at 100%. Working toward 100% demonstrates being full in. It’s a commitment expressed. We appreciate the Gabber’s regular coverage of Gulfport Votes 100%’s efforts to encourage civic engagement and voting despite the pandemic. While we didn’t make 100% voter turnout – yet – we moved the dial in the right direction. Thanks to the actions of many organizations and individuals, Election 2020 had the largest turnout ever – nationally and locally. Let’s continue to build these civic engagement “muscles” by becoming familiar with our public servants, attending city council meetings (in person or virtually), learning from multiple news sources, and cultivating curiosity about people and things we don’t understand. This is the kind of spirit that we’ve witnessed from the Gabber itself as it struggles to reconstitute and re-imagine itself to serve its community while bringing fresh approaches to hometown journalism. Even being public about the “misses,” i.e., humorous crime reports, indicates that there are always more than just one way to look at something. Thank you for showing us the parts of ourselves that should be re-examined and improved even as you help our community celebrate the best of who we are and what is possible for our future. – Ingrid Bredenberg

In discussing the recent court case, the Gabber stated, correctly, that the Federal Court found BCYC to be a private club, not subject to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. What the article neglected to mention is that the court also found that BCYC did not discriminate nor retaliate against the former member who sued the club. As you can imagine, this case has caused significant distress at the club as well as untold damage to BCYC’s reputation among the residents and perhaps even among city officials. Importantly, as a BCYC member and former Commodore, and as a former civil rights lawyer, I can say without reservation that discrimination is not and will never be how the club operates. It’s just not who we are. The Gabber article also did not fully explain how the BCYC lease with Gulfport, described before the council and elsewhere as a “sweetheart deal,” has worked to the city’s benefit. City residents may not know, for example, that BCYC originally developed part of the waterfront, forming the basin where members’ boats are kept and creating the breakwater that protects it and is now planned to be part of a future city park. The club’s basin and breakwater did not exist before BCYC dredged the area. While the city later rebuilt and improved the slips and docks,

it is no exaggeration to say that over the years of this current lease, BCYC members have paid the city hundreds of thousands, likely over a million dollars in boat slip rental revenues that were previously paid to the club. Early on, the club improved the U.S. Army Corps building that currently serves as BCYC’s meeting place, and within the past couple years, BCYC invested significant funds improving the grounds and upgrading the clubhouse to bring them into conformity with the city marina design. By the way, BCYC hired a Gulfport contractor for much of the work. For me personally, my work with BCYC has brought me into contact with many of the city’s merchants and officials, and I’ve come to enjoy those relationships through the club’s activities such as Fun Day, the Christmas Boat Parade, Sea Scouts, youth sailing for Gulfport residents and other boating events that bring outsiders into the city. Through the club, I became a part of the Gulfport community much more quickly and completely than would have been possible otherwise. I know that BCYC considers itself to be a part of the Gulfport community, and I hope Gulfport will continue to consider BCYC in the same light, to work with the club for the mutual benefit of us all. – Lee A. Nell

BCYC is a Part of Gulfport Dear Editor: As a resident of Gulfport, the Boca Ciega Yacht Club and the Gabber are two of the many things I love about this city. It was disappointing, then, to see a recent Gabber article about BCYC that was wrong about some important points and did not tell the whole story. I would like to correct some of those things.

Storm continued from cover

LISA KAUFFMAN

“The alley from Shore Boulevard near Dupont and 58th is packed with stuff,” said Gulfport homeowner Lisa Kauffman. “These people need help.”

“Since it was declared an emergency, the city has already been in touch with FEMA for relief.” Six boats washed ashore on Gulfport’s beach and downtown waterfront Wednesday evening, prompting local news media, as well as some national outlets, to focus on Gulfport in Eta’s wake. At least six additional vessels in Gulfport city limits were either pushed into the mangroves or damaged as well, Gulfport Police Department’s Public Information Officer Thomas Woodman told the Gabber. According to the city, of the six boats

that washed ashore on Gulfport Beach, two of them were tied to mooring balls, and the other four were independently anchored. “The two boats that did break free from the mooring field, it wasn’t because the mooring ball failed; it had to do with the failure of the lines tied to the mooring balls,” said Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly. “Emergency Operations Center employees and Public Works worked overnight and monitored the pump stations; no failures were noted,” said Gulfport Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor Justin Shea.

CITY OF GULFPORT

Boat owners and the City of Gulfport began the process to removed boats stranded on the waterfront shortly after the storm.

theGabber.com | November 19 - November 25, 2020

Though the stranded boats created a scene on the waterfront, Shea noted they could have caused more damage. “The system worked, though,” he said. “These railings and steel ropes kept the boats from washing into adjacent buildings and we’re thankful for that.” Several of the boats that came ashore in the waterfront district severely damaged the Casino dock and waterfront railings. As of Monday, November 16, the city had received several estimates for repairs. According to Shea, the white railing on the east side of the Casino could cost between $10,000 to $15,000 to repair. The steel ropes and railing along Shore Boulevard could cost between $2,500 and $5,000 and the brick pavers that washed away will cost $6 per square foot. Engineers had not yet assessed damage to the public floating dock behind the Casino at press time, but were expected either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. As of Monday, the city was able to reach all owners of the grounded boats except one – the owner of the big red, steel sailboat. GPD Marine Patrol gave owners five days’ notice to respond. If the owner does not respond within that time frame the city will take possession of the vessel. Public Works requested three quotes to remove the boat from the shoreline to remove the boat. Two of the six sailboats stranded on Gulfport Beach have already been salvaged, funded by the owners, and are safely back on the water. Megan Wood surrendered her vessel to the city because she couldn’t afford the cost of removal. The city is storing the boat at a secured location, according to Shea. Waterfront Homes and Businesses Damaged Boaters weren’t the only folks affected by Eta. As the waters receded early Thursday morning, businesses and homeowners along Beach and Shore Boulevards dealt with flood damage. Businesses closest to the water, like Neptune Grill, Salty’s Bar, Paw Paws Storm continued on page 7

Unfortunately, some waterfront homeowners, like Lisa Kauffman, lost nearly everything. “The alley from Shore Boulevard near Dupont and 58th is packed with stuff,” said Kauffman. “These people need help; we need to get the message out to everyone affected by Eta to fill out FEMA’s online survey in hopes residents will be able to receive both state and federal assistance.” The flooding, says Kauffman, was unprecedented. “I have lived here for nine years,” Kauffman told the Gabber. “I have never seen anything like this; it came so quickly the sand bags just couldn’t hold up.” The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office also reported rescuing 33 people from homes and roadways with boats, high water vehicles and the sheriff’s dive team. “Most of the rescues occurred in the area from Pass-a-Grille in south St. Pete Beach north to Madeira Beach. Rescued people were taken to area hotels or other shelters,” PCSO said.

Gulfport Grassroots’ first-ever city wide clean-up on Saturday, November 14 was, according to founder and organizer Wolfgang Deininger, “a resounding success,” featuring “record-breaking community involvement” of 64 volunteers at locations including the waterfront, Clymer Park and the Tangerine Greenway. In partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful, which supplied gloves, trash pickers and water bottles, volunteers picked up 337 pounds of trash, including two used syringes disposed of in the hazardous waste container supplied by Keep Pinellas Beautiful. In addition to volunteers on the ground, locals also fortified the effort with snacks from the South 49th Street Business Association, chicken and sausage biscuits from McDonald’s, and coffee drinks courtesy of GulfPerk Coffee Bar. Deininger says that Gulfport GrassRoots is planning more larger scale cleanups in partnership with Keep Pinellas Beautiful next year, kicking off with The Great Clam Bayou Clean-up in March.

City facilities across the board had little damage, apart from the Gulfport Casino dock and Shore Boulevard seawall.

The county continues to document damage for potential state and federal emergency help, but says that residents can document damage on their property with the Online Damage Assessment Tool at arcg.is/1T4i9j. The county also offers tips and assistance options for businesses that had storm damage, and encourages owners to complete the Florida Business Damage Assessment Survey to begin the recovery process at floridadisaster. biz/businessdamageassessments. Get more assistance options at pinellascounty.org or by calling 727464-3800. Shea warned people to not “hire just any contractor” as they begin the repair process. “Residents, please make sure to document everything. dear gabby: politics & dating The Gabber’s semi-regular advice column, Dear Gabby, is here by reader demand. Have a question or a conundrum for Gabby? There’s no problem too small for your resident advisor. Send your questions – they can be anonymous – to deargabby@thegabber.com. My family is a mix of liberal and conservative people, and we’ve all mostly gotten along through the years. This year, though, some of my family members have gotten into heated, hurtful arguments with me, and I no longer feel as close to them. How can I keep my family from fighting about politics, and what do I do if I can’t? This question made me think of two things. One is something my grandfather used to say, “Opinions are like buttholes. Everyone’s got one.” While that’s true, you don’t have to be a butthole when you share your opinion, and that, unfortunately is what we’re seeing a lot of these days – from computer screens to dinner tables. The other thing I thought of was a meme I saw on Instagram. It said something like, “When I said we could agree to disagree, I meant pizza toppings not human rights.” I chuckled, but it’s true. If you find yourself getting into heated arguments with people whose views discount or dispute your (or anyone else’s) humanity, then those people, even if they are family, have some soul-searching to do – and they just might have to do it while you take a break from their lives. I’m single and recently graduated college. I’d like to start dating again, and have even tried some dating apps, but the timing is terrible. I’m concerned about meeting new people during the pandemic, but I also would like to keep dating. Do you have any suggestions?

together safely, opting for outdoor dates and other safe options for love in the time of COVID-19. When I was in high school, I started collecting frog stuff – figurines, stuffed animals, even clothes with frogs on them. The problem is, I haven’t been into frogs for a while now, but people keep giving them to me! I don’t want to be ungrateful, but how do I get people to stop giving me frog stuff without hurting their feelings? The same thing happened to me with giraffes! I love giraffes. They’re still one of my top three favorite animals, but I don’t need another figurine, coffee mug or journal featuring the tall, graceful, intuitive animal. Well, I might take another journal. The point is, I had to tell my family I’d had my giraffe fill. I did it in conversation, well before the next gift-giving event. For example, while talking with friends and family you can mention that you have other interests, or you can just be more vocal about what you DO want. Feel empowered to say, “You know, I think I’m moving on from frogs and would really like <insert thing you’d like>.” Also, consider that people may have been giving you frogs because for so long it’s been a no-brainer gift idea. Maybe they would actually love to get you something different, but aren’t sure what... let them in on how your tastes have changed. They may surprise you and be excited to gift you something other than frogs, too!

Unfortunately, the pandemic is going to be here for a while, and the best way to keep safe is to social distance and wear a mask in public. It is indeed difficult to date with these precautions – you can’t even see a person’s whole face! – but difficult is not impossible. We’ve been edging our way closer and closer to a virtual dating norm anyway with apps like eHarmony, Match, and Hinge (which has hilarious ads!), so don’t give up on making a love connection virtually. Even if apps aren’t your thing, you can get creative and plan video-call dates using your phone or computer. Spend some synchronous time online with cameras on (it’s 2020, if they won’t agree to cameras, sound the catfish alert!) and get to know people that way. When it’s time to upgrade the date to an in-person meeting, you can still get

THE WEEKLY CHALLENGER

Quest Federated Club and Modernistics were two of the many organizations that met at the Melrose Clubhouse.

Civic Groups Join Together to Save the Historic Melrose Clubhouse By Deirdre O’Leary, The Weekly Challenger The historic Melrose Clubhouse was the subject of last month’s virtual “Community Conversation” sponsored by Tombolo Books. Event organizers and speakers included Gwendolyn Reese, president of the African American Heritage Association of St. Petersburg, Veatrice Farrell, executive director of Deuces Live Redevelopment Corp. and Monica Kile, local historian and former executive director of Preserve the ‘Burg. The Melrose Clubhouse was dedicated in 1942 at the height of the Jim Crow area by a group of African-American women, including prominent civic leaders Fannye A. Ponder and Olive B. McLin. It served as a meeting place for several groups such as a women’s club, a war nursery, the Boy and Girl Scouts, the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women and the Colored YMCA. The historic building currently is on the campus of Melrose Elementary School [1752 13th Ave. S.]and is owned by the Pinellas County School Board. Details of the purchase are not shown on the Pinellas County Property Appraiser website. Its future is uncertain, as the school board recently considered tearing it down. The clubhouse is one of 12 historic buildings in south St. Pete and

12

received historic designation by the city in 1993. It is one of three buildings of interest to the African-American community outside the 22nd Street corridor to receive this designation. The others include the Bethel AME Church and the Fannye A. Ponder Council House. African-American landmarks typically hold cultural relevance rather than notable architectural features. “It’s less about the style of architecture oftentimes than it is about who it’s associated with or what happened there,” explained Kile. “You’ll find that a lot in Black communities because there wasn’t necessarily always the money to build these big grand style buildings that you might see in white communities, and so you get a lot more vernacular architecture.” The area Blacks were allowed to live in expanded slowly in St. Petersburg. In 1920, African Americans lived in Methodist Town, Gas Plant, and Pepper town, all north of Fifth Avenue South. Pepper Town was near the railroad and was a convenient place for railroad workers to live. By 1930, the segregated area extended south of Fifth Avenue to include the Manhattan Casino and Mound Park Hospital.

In 1931, the city codified the segregated residential Black area to be contained within Sixth Avenue and 15th Avenue South, and between 31st Street and 18th Street. Residential segregation became law. By 1951, the Black residential community grew around the 22nd Street business district. A Black dentist, Dr. Robert Swain, broke the 15th Avenue boundary when he established his dental office and other buildings just over the legal line. He sued the city in 1954 and won the right to have his practice there. Regarding the future of the Melrose Clubhouse, the Pinellas County School Board has to go through a formal process to demolish it, according to Reese. It must submit a request to the City Commission for Planning and Preservation, where Reese holds a seat. She said this process could be influenced by the community coming out in large numbers to city council meetings. Reese added that the school board stepped back from demolishing the building currently but is not speaking to community representatives about its plans. She saw architectural renderings that modify the outside of the building. Reese said a Freedom of Information Act request revealed

that someone was given a contract to curate the history of the Melrose Clubhouse building. “It was really one of the only places where you could have large group meetings or activities in the Black community, and the fact that it is now threatened, that there is any discussion of demolishing it to me is just a travesty.” Farrell thinks the community should also communicate directly to the school board. This past February, representatives of Deuces Live spoke at a school board meeting, urging them to preserve the clubhouse. The presentation included a slide show featuring several AfricanAmerican historic buildings in St. Petersburg. The entire virtual event can be viewed on Tombolo

Early Christmas Lights Save City Thousands By Laura Mulrooney

LAURA MULROONEY

The night before Tropical Storm Eta tore through Gulfport on November 11, the city installed their annual Christmas display at the Casino and lights around town. It seemed a little early, but time moves strangely in 2020. One week feels like three months, or just an hour. Where are we? What day is it? The Gabber reached out to Gulfport Cultural Facilities Events Supervisor Justin Shea for the answer. “The lights normally go up by November 21,” said Shea,

but this year he had an idea. “Duke Energy needs a report no later than November 15 to get any repairs on receptacles in time for the holiday season.” Instead of hiring an additional contractor to check each of the city’s electrical receptacles, the city contracted the holiday lights to be put up earlier than usual. Any non-working displays would be an indication of a broken electrical receptacle – and this decision saved the city nearly $2,000.

ProjectFREE Brings Nonprofits Together By Laura Mulrooney

LAURA MULROONEY

Celebrate Birthdays, an organization that gifts birthday presents to those in foster care and underprivileged children, shows off the donations they received from ProjectFREE participants.

On Saturday, November 14, ProjectFREE teamed up with Miracle By The Bay, its sister nonprofit organization, for their 1st Annual Spirit of The Community Event featuring nonprofit organizations. “We really need a call to action to work on helping with different parts of our community,” ProjectFREE co-founder Sharon Vanderlinde said. “It just makes sense for us to bridge the charities and the communities.” “This was the perfect opportunity for all of us to interact with each other,” Tracey Livingston, a volunteer for SHP Beds, said. SHP builds bunk beds for children and families who need of a safe and comfortable place to sleep. “It takes a village to do what we do.” Nonprofits gathered to raise money and invite new volunteers for their causes. “Due to COVID-19, there are a lot more people in need

of help this year,” Vanderlinde said. Celebrate Birthdays, an organization that gives birthday presents to those in foster care and underprivileged children received a plethora of toys from ProjectFREE members and residents. “We were dumbfounded that not every kid gets to celebrate their birthday,” said Belinda Leto, President of Celebrate Birthdays. “So we started Celebrate Birthdays in order to make sure each kid gets their special day.” ProjectFREE also rocked their new home at the ProjectFREE Performing Arts Center, 2026 51st S. Musicians and musical acts performed throughout the day, including ProjectFREE’s Music Director Audrey Short, ProjectFree’s very own rock band Solar Flair featuring musicians with diverse abilities, and a nail-biter of a “Drum Off” between teacher L.J. Harness and student Lauren Rittenhouse.

SPPD Starts Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Campaign By Laura Mulrooney

ALERT TODAY, ALIVE TOMORROW

Florida’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Coalition, a group of organizations with common interest in pedestrian and bicycle safety, is part of “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow,” to implement the strategies of Florida’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategic Safety Plan.

On Monday, November 9, St. Petersburg Police Department announced the start of a six-month High Visibility Enforcement campaign. According to the SPPD, Pinellas County is among the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes “resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.” The Florida Department of Transportation awarded SPPD $53,764 to help reduce pedestrian and bicycle deaths and increase compliance of traffic laws that protect them. “Working in partnership with the Institute for Police Technology and Management and the University of North Florida, this traffic safety initiative is part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s, ‘Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow’ campaign,” the SPPD’s statement read. “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” is Florida’s pedestrian- and bicyclistfocused initiative. “Pedestrians and bicyclists are the most vulnerable road users. Traffic crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists are more likely to result in serious or fatal injuries than other traffic crashes. The physical, emotional, and economic impacts caused by these crashes are significant,” the program website says. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,

integrating programs like ATAT “lets the public know that traffic enforcement is an agency priority. It also assists in reducing other crimes while at the same time creates general deterrence and encourages voluntary compliance of traffic laws.” The SPPD reported seven pedestrian fatalities and two bicycle fatalities for both 2019 and 2020, but organizers hope to further reduce those numbers. Over the next six months, education and enforcement efforts will focus on

major roadways in St. Petersburg, including 49th Street, 34th Street, 54th Avenue North, 4th Street North, MLK Street and others. SPPD reminds drivers, pedestrians and bikers to obey traffic laws and remain vigilant while on the road. Pedestrians and bikers should use crosswalks when possible, and make sure they are visible to drivers, especially at night. The initiative will continue through May 2021.

arts Gulfport Photographer Brightens Familiar Scenes By Lynn Taylor

LARRY BUSBY

Of “Marina Blues” Busby says, “My love of water began when my father and uncles took me into a spring-fed creek near my grandmother’s farm to teach me to swim. I took to the water immediately and began to doggy paddle. Guess that is why I joined the Navy and where my love of all things nautical began. This photo was taken in my Florida room at my condo overlooking a marina. I wanted a self-portrait with a sunrise, but due to poor weather I decided to create my own inside, looking out. This is my happy place surrounded by all things nautical.”

Photographer Larry Busby is well known for his unique aluminum print photos that capture landscapes, sunrises, sunsets and Bay area landmarks. His love of photography began in the Navy where he served as a photographer – but it would be many years before he embraced it as a creative passion and learned to manipulate his photos into unique works of art. Busby got the idea of transferring his prints to aluminum to retain their vibrancy, something he says paper does not do as well. “Paper soaks up too much light. When you look at a photo on a computer screen it is bright; then once it’s printed, it’s not quite as bright,” he says. “Aluminum prints

20

reflect the light back so well, it’s like looking at a computer screen.” Busby’s more recent work is of the Skyway Bridge at night and a foray into black-and-white photography. Gulfport Beach Bazaar displays his photographs, and he recently licensed some photos of Gulfport settings on postcards and coffee mugs that will be for sale at Stella’s Sundries. The first week in December, folks can see Busby’s work in the fourth Art Jones studio tour in Gulfport, at the Enroy Foundation, 5814 23rd Ave. S. Busby’s newest and most personal work is a series of three photographs he created while attending this year’s USF Contemporary Art Museum’s Breaking Barriers, a five-week series of artist-led photography workshops

free for military veterans. This year, there were more than 30 attendees, with classes added to accommodate more veterans. The workshops culminate in a portfolio review, curated exhibition and catalogue. This year, USF’s Breaking Barriers was selected, along with four other organizations, to be part of Love IV Lawrence’s “The Art of Healing,” which provides art therapy programs for mental wellness. “The program helps a lot of veterans, particularly those with PTSD,” says Busby. “USF started it for that reason. There was such a huge response that the VA got involved.” Busby recalls his own difficulties leaving the Navy and how

photography ultimately helped him make a successful transition to civilian life. “As part of my therapy, it was suggested that I pick up art or get a hobby,” he says. “I hung up my camera when I got out of the Navy, but I used to be a good photographer back in the day.” Busby discovered that not only had he changed since he left the Navy, but so had photography. “The Naval photography cameras I used are now in museums,” he says. “Digital was just starting up and I didn’t know a JPEG from a Megapixel. It was a struggle.” He learned about the Breaking Barriers program three years ago, and attended every year since. “Professional photographers teach the workshops, so I learned about lighting, including the painted-light technique, which uses a moving light source to add light to a dark subject when taking a long-exposure photograph,” he says. “I also learned how to edit photos.” This year, there was a new twist: Breaking Barriers told veterans to leave their cameras behind. The program focused on using cell phones to take professional-looking photos. Each attendee submitted a series of three cell phone photos using what they learned in the workshop. “The photos I submitted used different techniques,” says Busby. “All

Busby’s inspiration for “One Too Many and Then Some”: “Ever have a little too much at your favorite watering hole? My inspiration for this photo was wanting to use a timed feature on my camera to capture multiple images. I combined a 30-second exposure with a painted-light technique using a held flashlight as I walked across the street at night. So, the results of the shoot were the inspiration for the title.”

“Another Day in Paradise” was inspired, says Busby, by “having to pause for reflection as I prepare for my retirement as a state park ranger. Over the span of 28 years, I have had the pleasure and opportunity to do things that few have. I have helped create a new nature preserve from literally the ground up. As a wildland firefighter, I fought wildfires to protect my community as well as flora and fauna. I have served as a first responder operating chainsaws and heavy equipment to open communities devastated by hurricanes, so that first responders like fire, police, electrical crews and others could get in.”

were taken with a three megapixel camera, a Samsung Galaxy A20. Apps make the difference and can turn any cell phone into a great camera.” Attendees wrote a 100-word caption for each photograph, and a longer piece for photos selected to be part of the Breaking Barriers

catalogue. Busby’s photo, “Marina Blues,” was one of them. The workshop culminates in a virtual exhibition, “Breaking Barriers 2020: Me, Myself and Eye,” which runs December 9 to 11. For more visit ira.usf.edu/CAM or fb.com/ USFCAMfan.

Larry’s Tips for Great Pics with Your Phone Most of us have a phone with a camera – but do you really know how to use it? Larry has some pro tips for us: “The most helpful tip for me was buying a cell phone mount for a standard photo tripod. This allowed me to use many different techniques such as low-light photography, timed settings for long exposure and professional self-portraits. “Most cell phones now have a Pro setting. This mode makes it possible to use a cell phone like a regular 35mm camera. It has manual settings that shutter speed and F-stop values as well as other manual settings, giving the photographer total control over the image, not just point and shoot. “Another thing that helped immensely was learning to use several apps designed for the cell phone to make creative,

theGabber.com | November 19 - November 25, 2020

professional-quality photographs. There are hundreds of apps that do things such as creating photos that look like they were taken in the 1970s, and will time stamp the photo with a 1970s date. “One of my favorite, and mostused app is called Snapseed. It is a photo editor that allows the photographer to make corrections just like in a darkroom. It is a pretty sophisticated app for a cell phone. “Another app is called Camera FV-Lite, which is also free. This app allows for timed longexposure photos and multiple exposures in a low-light setting. It also allows for many other techniques. If your thing is lowlight photography, this is a must have app.”

Playwright Rachel Lynett: Uplifting the Voiceless As racial tension and social justice issues boiled over this summer, individuals and institutions took to social media to proclaim that they would do better. Politicians and celebrities, corporations and arts organizations published statements demanding not just equality for all regardless of race, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation, but also promising that they themselves would take steps to level the playing field once and for all. One pandemic surge and a traumatic election later, it’s hard to tell how many of those promises have been kept. But for playwright Rachel Lynett – whose work has been produced across the country, including multiple productions in the Tampa Bay region – her mission to create art for all voices began long before this summer. “With my writing I always just want to constantly make sure to create work that represents people that I feel like have been ignored, or that aren’t fully fleshed out on stage yet,” says Lynett, whose play “Letters to Kamala” just wrapped its digital run at American Stage. The script imagines a trio of prominent female trailblazers offering advice, wisdom and perspective to vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris. That Harris is now Vice-President Elect has no bearing on the story Lynett tells. Instead the writer focuses

on the cultural significance and psychological weight of her nomination through the eyes of Charlotta Bass, the first Black woman candidate for vice president; Charlene Mitchell, the first Black woman to run for president; and Patsy Matsu Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to be elected to the House of Representatives, first Asian-American woman to run in Congress and the first AsianAmerican to run for president. “[Former Artistic Director of American Stage] Stephanie Gularte reached out to me after one of my plays was in the shorts that they did over the summer,” Lynett says, speaking to how the collaboration came together, “and she was saying that she really wanted to do something that spoke to the now.” Speaking to the now is what Lynett does, specifically giving voice to the unheard or ignored – voices whose time has more than come. “When I approach a play it’s like: What story hasn’t been told yet?” says Lynett. “I calculate things like: Whose story is missing? Whose story do we need to be telling, and whose story do I have the right to be telling?” There are a lot of stories Lynett – who describes herself as a “queer Afro-Latinx playwright who writes dark comedies about complex, complicated women of color” – feels are not hers to tell but, through her work, she says, “I can uplift other people who can tell those stories.” Recognizing that like-minded artists need a path toward production before they can tell their stories, Lynett founded the Rachel Lynett Theatre Company.

RACHEL LYNETT

By Jeff Donnelly

Rachel Lynett is a queer AfroLatinx playwright whose plays have been produced across the nation, including American Stage, Florida Studio Theatre, University of Central Florida’s Pegasus PlayLab and Orlando Shakespeare Theatre.

“The idea is to really uplift women of color, queer artists,” she says, “people who are usually in the back seat but are usually also the ones making everything happen, and putting them front and center on stage and saying we need to be telling these stories loudly and proudly – making them the focus rather than in the background.” More at rachellynett.com.

Barrett, Mary Margaret (Megan), 61, Gulfport. Megan will be remembered for her love of animals, her commitment to her clients and her art. Megan dedicated her life to rescuing dogs. In 20I0, with some friends, she founded Limbo Chihuahuas-Chihuahua Rescue that saved over 500 dogs. Megan worked long days at rescue events, picking up dogs, finding them new homes and fostering. The rescue continues. Megan was a behavior analyst for children and young adults with developmental disabilities. She was loved by her clients as she treated them as special, rather than different. Megan drew pictures of animals her whole life and showed her prints and canvases at Art Walks. She leaves behind many relatives, friends, and her beloved dogs and cat who have found homes. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Limbo Chihuahuas, 6800 Gulfport Blvd S. #201-105, South Pasadena, 33707 or limbochihuahuas.org.
