Let’s Talk Turkey Frida is the tiniest (and onliest) turkey at the SPCA, and she’s part of the larger problem of an influx of “pocket pets” in Pinellas County: smaller animals – non-canine and non-feline, this is – like hamsters, rats, birds, guinea pigs and everything in between. For now, the majority of these animals have waived adoption fees to combat overpopulation and a high abandonment rate. Currently, pocket pet numbers are at an all-time high of 60-70 animals, says Mitchy Chavez, Director of Animal Services for SPCA Tampa Bay. That includes Frida. “They’re great first pets, and people love them at first,” said Chavez. “But they can be a lot of work, and they’re not as present as maybe a cat or dog, so often they end up here.”

Viva la Frida! “Here” is the winding Largo shelter that boasts a makeshift farm in the back. The property has seen its fair share of miniature horses, goats, ferrets and, once, an emu. Frida shares a communal chicken coop with two chicken hens, caddy corner to a tribe of permanent residents: a mess of iguanas that live in a junglescape sanctuary.

Meet Frida, the noisy, molting turkey who calls the Largo SPCA chicken coop home (hopefully temporarily).

voices Three Times Not a Charm for Trolley Park Three times now a vehicle has slammed into the trolley park on 49th Street. This has resulted in injury and expensive repair to the park wall. I read that the city has studied repairs including some kind of flashing warning lights. It seems to me ineffective and expensive. I suggest a speed bump on each side of the street. In my walks in Gulfport I have noticed everyone slows for the bumps. I think this would be a much cheaper and more effective than the suggested lights. –Rev. C. full letter at the “Voices” section of thegabber.com. Jim McConville’s article presents the situation as one couple (clearly the most affected by the proposal) and First United Methodist Church. The article presents a rather slanted view in favor of the introduction of a 40-foot industrial shipping container in a residential area. Giving very short notice, the church invited Sue Lloyd Davis to their Oct. 14 council meeting. Objections included: Food banks seek substantial, filling (food) for hungry families – reports from the very successful St. Pete Food Farm indicate no need for sprouts, usually used as garnish by very pricey restaurants; clear evidence that these fragile crops are very susceptible to several pathogens and have to be carefully monitored to prevent harm; (and that) packaging them for distribution is not in the province of well-meaning peo-
ple. (Check out research on the inherent problems associated with raising these crops!) No matter how you gussy up this commercial shipping container, it has no place in a residential community and could so easily set a dangerous precedent for other groups, nonprofits or others to justify doing the same thing with devastating implications, on our city’s character, which has allured all of us to live here. People now purchasing the highly inflated prices of Gulfport homes will certainly be among long-term residents in opposition to this proposal. Although the article states the sprout farm “(is) close to reaching a compromise with their next-door neighbors,” there has been little indication of compromise on the part of the planners, with work already having been done, clearing landscaping where the plan is to Voices continued on page 29

news $300,000 Investment in Gulfport’s Future
City to Hire Lobbyists to Fundraise for New Senior Center Gulfport needs a new senior center, and it’s willing to pay three consultants approximately $300,000 to lobby for funds to pay for it. At its Nov. 16 meeting, council unanimously approved drafting contracts with three lobbying groups – Hartsook Companies, Inc., Shumaker Advisors and Thorn Run Partners – to raise local, state and federal funds, respectively, to help fund the new center. City officials estimate it will collectively cost Gulfport approximately $300,000 for the three firms’ services. “This is the first step,” said City Manager Jim O’Reilly at the Nov. 2 Council meeting. “Retaining the ability – through lobbying companies – to attempt to raise the money. You are starting the project by investing $300,000 to build a $10to-$15 million building. You are deciding today to spend money to elicit money.” The contracts call for the city to pay: • Hartsook Companies: $12,000/ month, plus expenses, to raise local private funds, not to exceed $184,000 a year. • Shumaker Advisors, Florida:

The city built the existing Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center in 1983; to put that in perspective, many who use it now were barely teenagers when this building was new.
$2,500/month, plus expenses, to raise state funds, not to exceed $34,000 a year. • Thorn Run Partners: $6,500/ month, plus expenses, to raise fed-
eral funds, not to exceed $78,000 a year. Deputy Mayor April Thanos called the city’s funding of the three firms a good investment. “If you spend under $500,000 to help raise what we now think is $11.6 million to build a new senior center, that is still money well spent,” Thanos said. Thanos explained that the new $11.6 million building cost estimate comes from an engineer re-evaluation, which raised the estimate to factor in a volatile building supply market. In related news, at the same meeting council unanimously approved a $35,000 contract with Caladesi Construction Company to repair the canopy roof of the Senior Center. The repair will replace wooden and steel beams in the front of the building canopy that have deteriorated from outside moisture, according to a city memo.

The lizards will never leave the SPCA. “Iguanas are an invasive species, so the law is to kill them on site,” Chavez said. “They live here now.” Those scaly reptiles aren’t up for grabs, but Frida is – for free. According to staff, the female turkey landed at SPCA after her previous owner’s landlord evicted them both, leaving the bedraggled bird stranded. That stress could account for Frida’s intense molt. Even still, the plucky bird is full of life and will stand, sit and preen herself as close to SPCA staff as possible – without risking getting picked up. “She’s clearly very well-handled,” Chavez said, avoiding a shoelace peck. The SPCA hopes Frida finds a fitting – and legal – home, says SPCA Chief Operations Officer Tara Yurkshat. “We don’t enforce zoning laws,” Yurkshat said. “We expect that if someone adopts an animal, that they will do their due diligence.” While turkeys are a bit of a gray

area, Pinellas County has varying requirements for chickens and fowl. Gulfport city ordinance is unclear as to the legality of turkeys – Sec. 5-12.1 forbids fowl, but Sec. 5-12.2 allows chickens (hens only). In St. Petersburg, fenced fowl cannot be within 100 feet of neighbors without their approval. The one absolute? No roosters allowed.
As for Frida, her fate remains uncertain while she gobbles away in her temporary pen. Want to know if Frida would be legal in your city? Gulfport Teacher Brings Imaginary Glitter and Yoga Balls to the Classroom Kathleen Bohrnsen, a public school veteran teacher of 19 years, is Gulfport Elementary Schools’ 2021 Teacher of the Year, and she’s not afraid to go off track. A first grade teacher with a sing-song voice and an undeniable teacher croon, Bohrnsen has two master’s degrees in social psychology and brain-based teaching with a concentration in reading literacy. “I wanted to make a change; I felt teaching was something impactful and important,” Bohrnsen said. “You have the power to change the trajectory of a person’s life in a great way. How lucky am I to get to be a part of that?” The Florida native went to school in Denver, Colorado and returned to her roots in Pinellas with fresh ideas and a brain-shaped plush coined “Dexter Dendrite.” “Brain-based thinking and teaching are so connected,” Bohrnsen said. “At this age they are so bright and eager to learn.” The Bohrnsen Method Bohrnsen has only been at Gulfport Elementary for two school years and she’s adopted a standout way of promoting self confidence. “We ‘sparkle up’ a friend. In Bohrnsen’s words, the doggy daycare adopted her class. “The Pasadena Pet Motel purchased our focus chairs and some of our supplies … it’s such a tight-knit community here,” she said. Despite the community donation, Gulfport Elementary needs uniforms – especially in the coming winter months. “We really need more uniforms, and jackets as it gets colder,” Bohrnsen said. “It’s around this time of year that our supplies start to dwindle.” Want to help out? BCYC Lawsuit has Tentative Settlement
The Suit Centers on a Bee-Killing Dog and ADA Concerns A tentative settlement agreement has been reached in the legal fight over an American with Disabilities Act (ADA) claim involving a woman who says her bee-killing service dog was denied entry into the Boca Ciega Yacht Club (BCYC). The Gulfport-based yacht club and Samantha Ring, who says she’s allergic to bee stings, held a mediation session Wednesday, Nov. 16, and have reached a tentative settlement of their dispute, according to Marcy LaHart, an attorney representing Ring. LaHart said details of the agreement could not yet be disclosed. The federal ADA lawsuit filed by Ring is being put on hold while the settlement is being finalized. The lawsuit would then be dismissed after finalization, LaHart said. BCYC is a nonprofit located in Gulfport; it leases its waterfront space from the City of Gulfport for $1 a year (as do other nonprofits leasing from the city). The city gets boat slip revenue from yacht club members as part of the lease deal. Ring, a middle school teacher, filed an ADA lawsuit against the yacht club in 2019 alleging she was denied entry because of her dog, Piper. Ring, who had been a member of the boat and sailing club since 2007, says she is allergic to bees and the

dog kills bees. Court documents say Piper has vanquished bees to protect Ring “on seven separate occasions.” BCYC says it does not allow animals on its premises, and its commodore denied Ring’s request for a service dog exemption, according to court documents. Ring wanted to bring her dog to the club, the case alleges, but was fined by the club and then had her membership suspended and then revoked. That prompted a federal lawsuit claiming an ADA violation for denying a service dog entry. The American with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990 offering legal protections to those with disabilities — including
use and access for individuals with service dogs. Attorneys for the BCYC argue the Gulfport group is a private club and enjoys exemptions from ADA and applicable state laws. “Both the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Florida Civil Rights Act include exceptions for private clubs,” according to court documents. A federal trial court agreed with the yacht club’s “private club” argument. U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Covington also dismissed a retaliation claim brought by Ring alleging she was mistreated by the club because of her dog and ADA

efforts. Ring’s attorneys appealed those rulings. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta in July upheld the lower court’s retaliation ruling, but sent the decision that BCYC is a private club and not subject to the ADA back to the lower court. The mediation and settlement were reached after the appeals court ruling. The appeals court pointed to public, community and youth events hosted by BCYC and its open membership rules as working against its private club argument. “The record contains substantial evidence that the Club fails to ensure the seclusion of its members on much of its property and often fails to do so even in its clubhouse. Strangers often mix with members in the clubhouse, and the Club embraces the presence of non-members at social events and even governance meetings. The Club’s membership criteria are lax, and it appears from the record that any member of the public who is interested in boating and able to pass a criminal background check is almost guaranteed acceptance,” the appeals court said in its ruling. Before the settlement deal, the federal trial court in Tampa was slated to reconsider the yacht club’s defense and Ring’s ADA violation claim. Ring’s dog has been one of the unique facets of the lawsuit. LaHart, who specializes in animal-related cases, said service dogs and animals are not required to be certified or licensed in Florida or other states under the ADA. BCYC officials and counsel did not respond to requests for comment on the mediation or the ADA case. LaHart also wanted to see the City of Gulfport take a stand in the lawsuit since the BCYC leases municipal land. “I am disappointed that the City of Gulfport has not stepped in and told the BCYC (that) they are not operating a private club,” she said. The city is not named as a defendant in the suit. Gulfport City Manager Jim O’Reilly said “it is the city’s policy not to comment on pending litigation.”

lifestyle We Tried It: Seven Tarot Cards with Patsi
The Cards Say it’s Not So Bad I made an appointment with Gulfport psychic Patsi Aguero with a fair amount of skepticism, and the hope of leaving the meeting with stories of how she detailed my husband’s cheating. As a queer woman in a constant state of singlehood, it was going to be a good holiday story. But Aguero, an artist with a history of tarot reading in Atlanta, a peacock headdress, and good old-fashioned Ybor City heritage was surprisingly honest and emotional. “I knew what you were going to look like even before you got here,” Aguero said. “I can’t tell you your license tag number … but I can tell you what I feel.” A reading with Aguero starts with her clients shuffling a deck of cards that are meant to represent their

divinatory fate, an ultra-serious concept made light with her Bette Midler laugh and endless stories (good and bad). Honestly, it feels more like a sit down with a friend with a knack for the unseen and unsaid than a spiritual reading.

Regardless, she pulls seven cards. In my case, the cards told her that someone in my personal life is surrounding me with negativity, and she felt it almost immediately. “I don’t like to say negative things but sometimes I have to say negative things,” Aguero said. The cure? Wish all the good things I want for myself onto this person for the next three weeks. It’s the kind of advice they give at 12-step programs for addiction, says Aguero. “There’s a way to just let things go,” Aguero told me, The next six were a rambling of intensely personal observations and predictions – many of which check out, such as my work projects and bad relationship with the blue packs of American Spirit. “As far as romance, I see someone already around you that you will be romantically involved with … someone in the service industry,” Aguero said from behind the cards. “You’re emerging from a cocoon now, you’ll probably lose weight, you’ll get healthier, I’d say in 90 days.” The countdown begins. See Aguero’s work at the opening reception of Full Circle, an art show featuring the circles of life by her and artist Denise Marie. Catherine Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Ave. S., Gulfport. Stella’s Gets Spirited
Gulfport Breakfast Nook Gets a Liquor License The local breakfast favorite known for its green building and habited mascot has started serving spiked coffees and juice-based cocktails. Stella’s previously sold beer and wine, but the additional liquor license allows for stronger drinks, meaning the previously wine-based bloody mary is getting a revamp. An official cocktail menu is on the way, Stella’s owner Barbara Banno says. “With the cold mornings, the Irish coffees have already become a bestseller,” Banno said. “I like to get creative, so we have some breakfast style ideas coming soon.” Banno is referring to a “breakfast bite and shot,” coming from the mind of her chef (and wife) Morgan Banno. The shot will consist of Irish whiskey, butterscotch schnapps and is chased with orange juice. Morgan hopes to pair the morning-time jolt

Ahhh, Thanksgiving. The one time of year we deliberately gorge ourselves on empty carbs and sugar-drenched desserts with no shame, while closey surrounded (uncomfortably so) by family and friends. I’m not entirely sure when my childhood Thanksgivings morphed from the intimate family dinners where we all dressed up and sat awkwardly around the table to the 30-person potlucks that belong on Misfit Island but this year, I’m taking Thanksgiving back to its root – before Plymouth, Massachusetts – to St. Augustine, Florida and the Spanish conquistadors, to the country’s real first Thanksgiving. Stash the stretch pants and keep those sandals handy, because this year is all about Thanksgiving, Florida-style. School history lessons may have led us to believe the inaugural meal was held in New England because that’s where the Pilgrims landed. But in actuality, the OG party was celebrated on September 8, 1565 by Spanish settlers in St. Augustine. It commenced with a Catholic mass led by Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales followed by a giant feast hosted by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés for the 800+ Spanish settlers. What did the first Thanksgiving

been prepared and served with whatever remaining food product made it over the ocean, unscathed, to the “new” world. Oysters were harvested from shallow waters. Indians handspeared mullet. Women and children foraged wild foods like mushrooms and ramson and gathered waterfowl eggs. Tribal men would hunt in groups for proteins like duck, mourning doves and alligator. When the African slaves arrived, they smuggled in watermelon, okra and black-eyed peas. With the Columbian Exchange, products like sugar, tea and breadfruit became more readily available and widely used in food preparation. And wouldn’t you know, by 1672, the wild turkey had become scarce. The signature dish of the Spanish fleet was Cocido Madrileño – a salt pork, stew-like dish made of garbanzo beans, potato, carrot, broth and meat scraps served with hard biscuits and red wine. While cocido is traditionally cooked all
in one pot, it is served as three separate courses. The first course is strained broth and rice (or noodles, for today’s convenience). For the second course, the meat and veggies are strained and served on a large platter. For the final course, the garbanzo beans and potatoes are plated and served family-style. Cocido Madrileño Yields 6 servings Ingredients 1 ham bone 1 fresh pig’s foot, halved 1 lb. beef stew chunks ¼ lb. salt pork ¼ lb. fresh ham hock 1 lb. chicken thighs 4 cloves garlic, chopped 2 bay leaves 1 can garbanzo beans 1 carrot, cut into three pieces 1 onion, chopped into quarters 8 potatoes, peeled 1 large savoy cabbage, cut into eight pieces 1 lb. Spanish chorizo
1 morcilla (blood sausage) 1 c. vermicelli noodles Salt & pepper to taste Method In a large pot, put ham bone, pig’s foot, stew chunks, salt pork and ham hock and cover with water. Bring to a boil and skim any fat. Add chicken thighs, garlic, bay leaves, garbanzo beans, carrot and onion. Simmer for three hours. Remove the large bones and shred the meat. Add potatoes after twoand-a-half hours. Take two cups of broth and place in separate stock pot with cabbage and sausages (additional water may be needed). Cook until cabbage is tender. Cook vermicelli al dente. Add salt and pepper as desired. Serve in three courses, family-style. This Thanksgiving, skip the post-turkey tryptophan trance and instead round out your dinner with more authentic, Old Florida flavors.

arts Larry the Flower Guy
Gulfport Ballroom Dance Teacher was Florist for Atlanta Royalty Larry Lucas, the official teacher of ballroom dancing, cooking and flower arranging for the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center, has quite a few stories to tell from his former life as a famed Atlanta florist and traveling cruise ship dancer. Born in small-town Illinois, Lucas discovered his natural knack for elaborate flower displays in the 1960s while working for florist shops in Tampa and Palmetto. The owner of Stern’s, an Atlanta florist, spotted his talent and plucked him from the area. Lucas left Florida, flowers in tow, with eventual plans of going solo. “I got a loan for $75,000 from the bank and bought my own store, ‘Larry Lucas Limited,’” Lucas said. “Basically, I put Stern’s out of business.” It was the beginning of an era: Lucas wrote his recipe book, “Fun with Food and Flowers Cookbook” and became the official florist for former U.S President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn. The relationship bloomed after Lucas met Rosalynn at an Atlanta benefit for blindness in the ‘70s. “Midway through the program, I brought her two dozen roses,” Lucas recalls. “They are such a kind couple, so giving. I still get a Christmas and birthday card from them every year.”

Former florist Larry Lucas teaches ballroom dancing, cooking classes and floral seminars in Gulfport.
Then, Carter was the Governor of Georgia, and when he left for Washington DC after eight years of working with Lucas, the governor and his wife invited Lucas to move up north. “I didn’t. I wanted to stay home,” Lucas said. “The Busbees’ [Former Georgian Governor George Busbee] sort of adopted me.” He didn’t stay home for long. Until 2017, Lucas spent 31 days of the year for 16 years on various cruise ships, teaching ballroom dance. “I saw an ad posting a need for lobsters, ranchers and ballroom
dancers,” Lucas said. “I went with ballroom dancing.” Naturally. With little training aside from dancing with his female family members as a pre-teen in Illinois, Lucas enlisted in the instructor program and dove right in, traveling to 60 countries in his 16 years. “In 31 days you become friends with the passengers,” Lucas said. “The cruise ships were alright, but I really did it for the people and for the adventure.” The florist’s cruise ship days are over, but he’s not done dancing yet. Lucas teaches ballroom dancing once a week and chair volleyball twice weekly for the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center. He’s hosted many of the center’s online cooking shows and still does the occasinal floral seminar in St. Petersburg. And don’t forget the 32 desserts a week he bakes for his students. “Gulfport feels like home,” Lucas said. “I am extremely blessed to have my life here.” Meet the legend (and learn to dance or cook) at mygulfport.us/ recreation/senior-center.

Through December 31, Florida CraftArt’s main gallery is a fullblown shopable winter wonderland, complete with a ceiling-high Christmas tree and a room full of hand-

erything up with the help of volunteers ... I’m ready to book a massage,” Cooper said. The winter tradition returns seven days a week, the first time since COVID-19 limited the local art scene’s brick and mortar spots. “It feels incredible to be back,” Cooper said. “A lot of our artists have spent most of their COVID-19 time creating a body of work. This is representative of that.” The gallery at 5th Street and Central Avenue is a temporary home for the work of more than 300 artists, most of which includes hanging tree art, holiday decorations and the occasional ice-skating bird. It’s mostly pointless fun, but the walkable gallery gives visitors a chance to shop local and support Floridian artists. “We don’t take a huge percentage of the artist sales because we want people to grow,” Cooper said. floridacraftart.org

An Ode to Separation
Charlie Morris Sings About America’s Growing Schism Frustrated with the division of today’s political climate, Charlie Morris added to his signature style of blues and folk with some rock and roll for his latest album. In the 13-track “A House Divided,” Morris critically examines today’s split world, while also providing respite from the disparity with lighthearted tunes. “Like a lot of people, I’m pretty appalled at what’s going on and the worst aspect for me is the division. What’s going on has divided friends, families and co-workers,” Morris said. Originally from Miami, Morris moved to St. Pete in 1980, where he recorded 13 albums. His newest album, “A House Divided” was released in 2020, and is a compilation of older tracks, as well as unreleased and new numbers all dealing with thematic elements of division. “We Americans have always held a lot of conflicting opinions, but now, tolerance for, or even awareness of, other peoples’ views seems to be at an all-time low. I’d like to see less outrage, less judgment and more togetherness,” Morris said. The titular track, “A House Divided,” is a solemn ode to the distinct separation of people in America. With a light guitar melody, the song draws listeners in and forces them to pay close attention to the timely and veracious lyrics: “I woke up one morning in a house divided/One country, two peoples living in two separate worlds.”

to offend my conservative friends. The theme of the title song, and also of ‘Neighbors,’ is division,” Morris said. “Neighbors” explores the idea that we never really know who is around us. “All this stuff happens and all of a sudden you start looking at the people around you and you think, “ I guess I never knew them, I never understood them. The worst part of that is, you start disengaging from everybody, the next thing you know, you don’t know what your neighbors think,” Morris said. “The Four Horsemen” was inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech where he detailed a Biblical account of four things that disrupted society. Morris determined which horsemen have changed and which remain stagnant in the song.

Charlie Morris sitting with his Gibson guitar in 2020.
“Unfortunately, a lot of the things that were going on then are still going on now. Racism, poverty, ignorance, lack of education, militarism. I changed [the horsemen] around a little bit, but I think most of those are still with us and I think there’s probably more than four out there,” Morris said. On a less politically-charged note, the song “Y’all Come Over For Dinner”
serves to unite everyone, even those with antithetical beliefs and views. The playful, rhythmic hi-hat and the backing guitar transports listeners to a Florida-themed feast with key lime pie, boiled peanuts, grouper, homecooked specialties and secret family recipes. “What better way to get together than over some home-cooked Florida cuisine?” Morris said.
theGabber.com | November 25, 2021 - December 1, 2021
Although Morris has his roots in folk and blues, he credits Keith Richards for inspiring him to write “Magic Stone,” a love letter to the Stones about the philosopher’s stone, aka the Holy Grail, a magical object that can grant users eternal life and knowledge. “If we can just discover this one thing, then everything is gonna be okay and we’re gonna reach enlightenment and well, maybe that one thing is just some good old rock and roll,” Morris said. Pre COVID-19, Morris hosted a weekly singer-songwriter open mic, but paused it for health concerns. However, he hosted a successful pilot run on Oct. 21 and is excited to announce the event will return every Thursday from 6-9 p.m., beginning Dec. 2 at ANJU (2827 16th St N). Morris will play at the open mic night Dec. 2, and on Dec. 4 Morris is scheduled to perform on the Florida Folk Show hosted by St. Pete Radio (96.7 FM) with the St. Pete Mountain Boys. Later that night he’ll play at The Hideaway (1756 Central Ave).

the gabs What do you think the government should do to help the families of combat-wounded veterans? Photos by Gabrielle Reeder
Steve Sabbides, St. Petersburg: “Give the families everything they want.” Bob Rowand, New York City: “Everything they can and everything that they need. People shouldn’t give up their life for them and then have to suffer or have any problems because of anything that happened to them in combat. End of story.”
Destiney Bodenbender, Tampa: “I have a brother that was in the military and he got discharged and things like that, he went through a lot of struggles ... they should have a lot more group opportunities, things like that. They went through a lot over there, so they need to have that when they come back home. Right now, it’s not like that. There’s a lot of suicides when it comes to veterans.” Edited for space; hear the whole comment at thegabber.com.
Gecko Queen Elizabeth Hendricks, Gulfport: “I think they should offer free healthcare. Dental and vision.”

Holiday Things to Do
A One-Stop Spot for Holiday Markets, Tree Lightings and Santa Visits By Abby Baker
Find links for these events — and many other things to do — online at thegabber.com/events
ADOBE STOCK
We’ve put together a refrigerator-friendly list of holiday happenings in St. Petersburg, Gulfport and surrounding areas. Stay tuned (online and in print) for more winter-in-Florida fun.
Thursday, November 25 Monday, January 3 All the Lights See a typically quiet St. Petersburg neighborhood transformed into a holiday light display that once racked up a $4,000 light bill – for just one home. There’s a working railroad, a three-story snowman, bubble machines, and any type of Christmas card prop you can think of. It’s a holiday must-see. Oakdale Christmas House Light Display 2719 Oakdale St. S., St. Petersburg. 6-10 p.m. Thursday, November 25 Thursday, January 17
Tuesday, December 28 Monday, January 3 More Ice by the Beach Enjoy the seasonal skating rink at the Postcard Inn on the Beach before it melts. The 2,000-square-foot rink will host skaters, hot cocoa and a snow machine. Postcard Inn on the Beach, 6300 Gulf Blvd. St. Pete Beach. Hours vary. $15. Tuesday, November 30
Skate On St. Pete’s Pier is getting a frosty makeover this holiday season into a “Winter Beach.” The seaside space will be transformed into an ice skating rink with real ice, fake snow, vendors and special event nights well into January. St. Pete Pier, 800 2nd Ave. NE., St. Petersburg. Hours vary. $17. Save a skating spot: winterbeachstpete.com.
St. Pete’s Tree Say goodbye to Rick Kriseman and hello to a beautifully lit tree. The City of St. Petersburg is holding its annual official tree lighting ceremony as part of St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman’s Farewell Tour. Smell the pine without the living room mess. North Straub Park, 400 Bayshore Dr. NE. 5-8 p.m.

Thursday, December 2 For Hanukkah What better way to start Chanukah than with a menorah lighting? Add a parade and you have the Chabad Jewish Center of Greater St. Petersburg’s Car Menorah Parade and Chanukah festival in downtown St. Petersburg. The parade of menorah-displaying vehicles begins at the Florida Holocaust Museum and proudly marches toward North Straub Park, where they’ll light the menorah to kick off Hanukkah. Florida Holocaust Museum, 55 5th St. S., St Petersburg. 5:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, December 3 Boat Parade on the Beach Watch the City of St. Pete Beach’s annual lighted boat parade from the viewing party at Horan Park. Yacht Rock will play holiday favorites while the boats, several Santas, and a spectacular display of neon Christmas cheer sails to the Bayway Bridge. Horan Park, 7701 Boca Ciega Dr., St. Pete Beach. 6-8 p.m. Boaters, email mkaylor@stpetebeach.org to register. Tiniest Trees Fir Sale Have your shot at an artist-made holiday tree at an outdoor auction benefiting the Gulfport Historical Society and Gulfport Arts Center. The three foot creations – all crafted by Gulfport artists – will get auctioned off in the Art Village Courtyard. This is a tiny way to cele-

brate the holidays and support local artists and history Stella’s Sundries, 2914 Beach Blvd. S. 7 p.m. Saturday, December 4 Whiskey Wonderland Admit it, you’d love to have a say on whiskey other than Jameson. Coastal Creative is hosting a Whiskey Wonderland drink tasting that invites drink lovers to sample some of St. Petersburg’s tastiest (and strongest) cocktails. Jump on either the 11 a.m. or 4 p.m. time slot and remember to drink responsibly. Coastal Creative, 2201 1st Ave. S. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tierra Verde’s Tree Lighting Trek to Tierra Verde for the annual tree lighting in downtown. The tree will be as big and bright as ever and stay lit until the end of the holiday season. See the Christmas cheer while it’s still sweater weather! Downtown Tierra Verde, 1110 Pinellas Bayway S., Tierra Verde. 4-8 p.m. Treasure Island’s Boat Parade Watch festive vessels sail by for the 36th Annual Treasure Island Holiday Lighted Boat Parade and Celebration. Watch the fleet from the Treasure Bay Golf, Tennis & Recreation Center, a spectacular vantage point. Expect a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, live entertainers and food and drinks on site. Treasure Bay Golf, Tennis & Recreation Center, 10315 Paradise Blvd., Treasure Island. 5-9 p.m. Monday, December 6 Gulfport Tree Lighting The city calls it a tree lighting, but longtime Gulfportians know it’s really a block party that stretches along Clymer Park. Last year, Santa (and some city vehicles) took a driving tour through Gulfport’s neighborhoods, but – thankfully – this year the beloved Gulfport tradition returns to the park with kiddos singing, friends mingling, and – of course – Santa arriving on a fire truck. Don’t forget the ceremonial lighting of the tree, because Gulfport’s one of the only places around that decorates and lights up a living tree. Clymer Park, 5501 Gulfport Blvd. 6 p.m.
Saturday, December 11 Santa Rampage Beard-wearing Santa Claus impersonators are painting the town red this holiday season at the 2nd Annual Santa Rampage. Brought to you by the Witches of Gulfport, this dress-up event invites anyone and everyone to put on their best Kris Kringle digs and “rampage” Beach Boulevard. A photo op will magically appear in front of the Gulfport Casino Ballroom at 5:30 p.m., right before the Boca Ciega Yacht Annual Lighted Boat Parade at 6:30 p.m. Beach Boulevard, Gulfport. 2-9 p.m. Winter Market Come to the Warehouse Arts District and The Deuces Live for an expansive winter market with 12 participating locations (think The Factory and 22 Food Hall South). Find fun and fresh gifts, clothing and art along the shopping trail. Remember, the luminaries hit at sunset. The Factory, 2622 Fairfield Ave S., St. Petersburg. 3-9 p.m. BCYC’s Boat Parade Boca Ciega Yacht Club’s 36th Annual Lighted Christmas Boat Parade brings Santa’s fleet to Gulfport’s sliver of the Gulf of Mexico. Stand by the shore to watch the lighted fun or register your decorated vessel. Business owners, help support boat captains by donating gift certificates to be used as boat prizes. All salty boat captains receive a prize for their hard work – and bragging rights for their decorations. Want to see it all? The parade will go past Williams Pier & the Gulfport Casino, past Gulfport Beach and into the canals of Town Shores, Pelican Bay, Skimmer’s
Point, Bayview Circle, past a portion of Kipps Colony and near PYCC, then along Dolphin Blvd to the Pasadena Golf Club Estates, swinging across the bay to Isla del Sol before returning to our slips. Happy sailing! Williams Pier, 5400 Shore Blvd S. 6-8 p.m. Madeira’s Boat Madness Another sparkling boat parade to get land lubbers and salty sailors into the holiday spirit. The Madeira Beach 55th Annual Festival of Lights Boat Parade invites onlookers to the Madeira Beach Municipal Marina to watch the fun. Madeira Beach Marina, 503 150th Ave., Madeira Beach. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, December 17 Holiday Cookie Contest The Gulfport Historical Society’s annual cookie contest returns! Hopeful bakers put their best nibbles forward in hopes of winning cash. Taste traditional, vegan or gluten-free cookies, then work off the sugar high with winter caroling, led by local songsters Jon Arterton and James Mack. Gulfport History Museum, 5301 28th Ave. S. 7 p.m. Free tasting; $5 entry fee. Saturday, December 18 A Merry Market Gulfport’s third Saturday Indie Fair returns with a theme: Cocktails and Candy Canes. The Beach Boulevard favorite brings holiday-themed art and vendors to downtown. There will be a visit from Santa and the regular Gulfport lineup amongst holiday spirits. Candy cane martinis? Definitely a possibility. Beach Boulevard South. 1-9 p.m.

VIA SHELLY FLETCHER
M. L. Faunce was born on May 27, 1944, a fifth-generation Washingtonian. She graduated from Catholic schools into government work
beginning in 1962 as a secretary at NASA Headquarters Office of International Affairs. In the heyday of space flight, she had a heady life that included trips to the NASA office in Paris. Six years later, caught up in the winds of politics, she applied for a job with a newly elected Senator from Alaska, Mike Gravel, and got the job as assistant to the Press Secretary. In her 40 year career on Capitol Hill, she worked mostly for Alaska members—with the exception of Abe Ribicoff—including Senators Frank Murkowski and Ted Stevens. As Community Constituent and Information Services Director, She traveled and lived in Alaska serving rural constituents by car, truck, boat, plane, and dogsled. After her Alaska years, she helped in the planning and preparation of the U.S. Capitol for Bill Clinton’s second Inaugural, spent two years in the Maryland Statehouse as a legislative aide and finished her career as an administrative analyst for the U.S. China Commission. In all that she did, M.L. embraced life with an open heart whether it was as a marathon runner or hiking and skiing with Washington Women Outdoors. The Chesapeake Bay enriched her city life

as well for, “memories of crabbing and fishing and boating with my cousins were the stuff of dreams,” she wrote. She relived her dreams in the 1990s by moving to Chesapeake country where she discovered a new weekly newspaper, The New Bay Times, and “began a dozen or so years of joyful writing about all that was unique about Bay Country.” In 2021 her work was published as “My Date With an Oyster and Other Stories of a D.C. Girl Discovering Chesapeake Country,” by New Bay Books. In 2011 M.L. moved reluctantly to Florida with her partner, Shelley Fletcher, saying “I don’t think I can live there full-time.” Four years later, after discovering the joys of Gulfport and reveling in tropical nature, she gladly became a full timer while still traveling widely. Hers was a life well and justly lived, with compassion and conscience, until cancer took her on October 31, 2021. She is mourned by her partner Shelley Fletcher, her niece, Janet Knotts; longtime friend Kathleen Wilson; her brother Brian Faunce, nephew John Knotts and niece Julie Shirley and their families; and friends in Alaska, Florida and the Mid-Atlantic. Services will be held at a later date.
